Would ABC be willing to entertain offers for AMC & OLTL from other outlets?

Courtesy/ABC

In a revealing piece from TV Guide, regarding the One Life to Live replacement makeover show, The Revolution, Reality Producer, J.D. Roth, (who is spearheading the new series), said he was completely shocked that it was his concept/show that would come into being at the expense of two beloved soap operas!

Plus the item discusses if ABC would be willing to field offers from other outlets cable or network for both canceled soaps.  Here are some excerpts!

First, Roth stated,  “No one talked about replacing anything. It’s bittersweet for me. On the one hand, we’re bringing a new genre to daytime. But on the other hand, I grew up watching my mom watching these soap operas. I want to be respectful of it.”

ABC on if AMC and OLTL could be moved to new outlet: “Meanwhile, there may be a glimmer of hope for All My Children and One Life to Live fans: Insiders at the network say ABC would be willing to entertain offers from other outlets — either cable or online — that might be interested in picking up the shows or even taking over ownership.  But before you get your hopes up, ABC (which didn’t shop the shows before making the announcement) doesn’t think they’ll get any interest. And indeed, when TV Guide Magazine asked several cable networks whether they’d be interested, reps for those channels — including Oprah Winfrey Network and Hallmark Channel — said no.”

So looks like OWN may not be the place for the soaps, either!

Roth better be prepared for lousy ratings when his “Revolution” show starts. NO ONE will be watching!

When NBC decided to give Jay Leno every day at 10pm I immediately knew it was a BIG mistake – just like this one. Brian Frons should be FIRED. THE ABC WEBSITE that features their announcement can only handle 40 pages of posts and I checked – the 40 pages (2000 posts) are only from approx 1 HOUR – in the past two days since the announcement there have been from my mathematical calculations 96,000 posts in a 48 hour period that are gone. That’s because their website is not able to keep all the posts because of the rapid rate at which people are posting. In my best guess this means they can’t handle the approximately ONE MILLION posts they will have received in ONE WEEK!!!! does that tell u something ABC? http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/keep-oltl-amc-on-air/ Go to this page and join. http://apps.facebook.com/abcboycott/ it is not a toll free number but you can call 1-818-460-7477 and leave a voicemail in regards to the soaps being canceled lets flood the phone lines!!!!!come one lets save our soaps pass on the number to everyone SEND BARS OF SOAP TO BRIAN FRONS PRESIDENT OF ABC ABC INC 500 BUENA VISTA ST BURBANK CA 91521-4551 ALL PETITIONS ARE GREAT ALSO OF COURSE AND HAND WRITTEN LETTERS BUT BARS AND BARS AND BARS OF SOAP WILL DEFINITELY MAKE A POINT I WILL BEING MAILING BARS OF SOAP EVERY DAY IT WORKED FOR TV SHOW JERICHO WITH NUTS AND THEY HAD NO FAN BASE LIKE US A BAR OF SOAP FOR A SOAP OPERA LOL THIS HAS TO WORK PLEASE EVERYONE SPREAD THE WORD SEND BARS OF SOAP TO BRIAN FRONS THANK YOU

Yeah well I’m not sorry to say this is one revolution I won’t be taking part in. I’ve had enough of these reality programs, they are practically interchagable at this point and you can bet I won’t be watching this or “The Chew” when they replace my beloved soaps. If ABC will remember NBC tried something similar when they took off Passions for 4 hours of The Today Show ad people who watched the first 2 hours continued to do so and then tuned out for the other two till they ended up going back to their morning show’s regular hours, only by that chance Passions was already gone. Just like the excess 2 hours of The Today Show that was trimmed, “The Revolution” and “The Chew” will be trimmed as well because there’s no way daytime viewers are going to be watching cheap crap in lieu of the beloved soaps we’ve watched for years.

own said no. does oprah not realize that housewives /soap fans start with amc and watch thru gh then watch oprah next… she owes these shows because she followed the masters its really sad.

That is so true! People who were loyal soap fans just kept the tv on and there she was. Also I wonder if she realizes that the boycott of all ABC shows by AMC and OLTL fans includes her final season shows because she is on ABC, at least in Philadelphia she is…

Michael, have you ever interviewed Claire Labine? Any chance of getting her back to GH, even as a consultant? As I see it, she is the last hope of ABC’s Last Remaining Soap…

i feel like half of me will be gone without one life to live. i am 35 yr. old male and i have been watching oltlsince i was 12yrs old with my mom. i record it every day and watch at night. this show is unique and i feel like i am losing part of my family. i will never watch any shows on abc ever again, i will not let my son watch shows on abc anymore either. you lost a viewer for life and i hope many more follow in mt fashion

I hope ABC fails completely with there new line up…There is enough reality TV and one to many food and health shows. I guess the only health about it that may work out for some people is getting them out of the house during soap hours once AMC and OLTL are no longer on.

THis is very sad like losing a family member.. I wouldn’t spit on The Chew and bleep the revolution i will be tuning out abc altogether

A big sucks!! I do not need anymore talk shows. From a woman who is a house wife. I love a little drama during the day! It is fun and i look foward to it every day. You are making a big mistake. I will just change the channel. A big hands down to you! I love oltl.

I wonder would GH entertain the ideal of some actors coming to the show..

My List:

Mr Easton
Mr.Goldin

Far as the cancellation iof OLTL and AMC, they didn’t pull in great #’s, Y&R crushed AMC in the ratings….But who knows maybe this is a publicity stunt to get people to watch both of the shows…

But I wouldn’t mind Michael Easton coming to GH as a Cassadine, or someone who falls in love with a Cassadine..LOL

But i still want my Jasam baby, Twins like Cain and Lily

I hope that a network does pick them up! I know I’ll watch. As for the callous comment about how OLTL & AMC did pull in great numbers…. Umm…. OK well I guess OLTL beating GH for the #3 spot last week was all in our imaginations. And I suppose the fact that OLTL pulls equal ratings numbers as GH for some time now is all made up too. Yeah…. sorry but OLTL helped keep GH on air & helped them to be able to do their big stunts over the years by the fact that they ALWAYS came in under budget. So excuse me but I’m tired of hearing all this smack talk about OLTL cause it’s not true! And GH needs to get their collective house in order cause if this network can hang SUSAN LUCCI (the face of ABC daytime) out to dry on every talk show, while she’s promoting her book, then the writing is on the wall. The mob & bad storytelling, isn’t going to cut it anymore. And I know that I will not be watching any of these new shows that replace AMC or OLTL. I’m disgusted by the shadiness & the lies the network told not only to us fans, but to both of the soaps. It’s a sad day when people are treated as collateral damage. Enough with reality TV & talk shows, give me a good scripted drama any day of the week.

I am done with ABC, soap viewers are loyal and I believe ABC will regret dismissing us daytime viewers. ABC can have their cheap reality/talk shows because I will no longer be watching that network after the last episode of OLTL airs.

If everyone starts sending letters, emails and campaigning for AMC and OLTL maybe Oprah’s OWN channel or another channel will change their mind and pick them up. Isn’t Oprah a big fan of AMC?

yes SAD SOAP LOVER she has had susan on her show countless times. she is about helping ppl and this idea would make a lot of ppl grateful if she wojld do this

i hope that the chew and the revaluate get chewed up by ratings for taking these two wonderful creations off the air the very thought of more talk shows makes me nauseated. ABC YOU BROKE OUR HEARTS SHAME ON YOU_

What about ABC’s sister cable channel, SoapNet???? I’m very surprised that NO ONE has mentioned the possiblity of these 2 shows contuinuing there, especially since they also show the same day episodes of all 3 ABC soaps!!!! I think that they would be the logical choice to keep them on! But if that’s not possible, what would happen to the channel itself?

It is my understanding that SoapNEt has been canceled also. Disney Kids show will be replacing it! Mores the pity!

SHAME ON YOU MICKEY MOUSE!!!! YOU A ARE A BAD RAT!!

That’s correct Katelesley! Just sit your kids down in front of the TV for a babysitter, so American kids can become obese! I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD SEE THE DAY WHEN MY CHILDREN HAD MORE BUYING POWER THAN I HAD! SHAME ON YOU ABC/DISNEY!!! YOU ARE AN AGEIST CORP. CARING ONLY ABOUT THE 18-49 DEMOGRAPHIC!!!!

Disney kids shows replacing SoapNet????? This has GOT to be a very bad joke!!!!
Mickey mouse, you’re not only a bad rat, you’re a FOOL!!!!!!! I mean, The Chew??? C’mon now!!!!! You know that the “mental geniuses” there at ABC must have laid awake nights thinking up that one!!!!

So other networks are not interested in OLTL or AMC? The Oprah Winfrey Network is top heavy with reality shows. Apparently, its executives are not any brighter or responsive than those at Disney/ABC. Does no one in network television understand there is a significant proportion of viewers who loathe reality shows, who actually want fictional entertainment? Or is it that since reality shows are cheaper to produce, the networks will not offer anything else because it fails to maximize their profits, regardless of viewer preference?

Disney/ABC and Brian Frons think viewers want a reality lifestyle show named The Chew hosted by an unattractive, obese man with a ponytail who walks around in baggy shorts. You have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to think anyone would prefer this to OLTL and six-time Emmy winner Erika Slezak.

Americans have to stop feeding from the trough of pig slop that is network reality television if we aspire to watch anything of quality, or network television might as well end now before it suffocates Western civilization in its own filth.

Agreed David!

I hate reality tv keep my soaps

Oprah would be so lucky to have AMC or OLTL on her network. I’ve watched the channel a few times, and I must say, I’m not impressed. Think of the millions of viewers you would gain to your new network, by putting the shows with strong fan bases among the lineup….I’m just saying, You might want to rethink this.

If you think Oprah is the place for the two soaps, people need to start writing to her and let her know what you want!

Can’t believe that they will be gone soon, after spending a life time with them. Stop and think what you are doing to soap fans….

Even if I’m from Canada , I’m still very disapointed in seeing that they will terminate , One Life To Live , I’m very sad and angry , For me I don’t watch reality shows , after awhile you get to many of those , Please change your mind and leave us our soaps , we don’t want to lose our family that we love so much , or ask Oprah to put it in hers .

SHAME ON YOU MICKEY MOUSE!! YOU HAVE BECOME A REAL RAT!!!

Enough of ABC, already. How in the he!! can you cancel 2 of the best soaps on modern t.v. and replace with some lame reality show? I am so sick of reality t.v.

This is an excellent idea IMO. The fans will follow the shows wherever they go. Just as we follow our favorite actors when they leave our favorite shows and take on bigger and brighter jobs. The key is tapping into the audience most likely to follow the shows. And today the best place to find that audience is online. People will watch Erica Kane and Viki Lord to wherever they can find them. How many followed Tristan to Y&R? How many began watching Y&R when Genie Francis joined the show? If I could have Robert and Laura I would prefer it. I will take what I can get, though, as the actors are who impress me most of all. We the fans aren’t ignorant of the facts – we just don’t want to be flushed down the toilet. Give us some respect and you’ll find us quite amenable. Being condescending ain’t gonna cut it. Thanks Michael for these articles. They give me the warm fuzzies. :-}

Big mistake for OWN not to consider picking up the soaps… I have no interest in her network but would have gladly tuned in for AMC?OLTL.

It’s very heart breaking for me to see AMC to be canceled, my mother was a big fan of the show and after she passed away in 2002 I started watching, I’m a fan of OLTL so I watch both shows and still feel my mother sitting with me everyday at 1pm while I watch her soap, so for me AMC and OLTL are very personal for me being canceled, I’m really hoping that another network picks up these 2 soaps but I don’t know…here we are, it’s May and AMC goes off the air in September, if a network is going to take over these 2 soaps they need to act now and not wait until the last minute, somebody, anybody, please save our soaps now.

Not only do I not watch “The Chew”, and have no intention of ever watching “The Revolution”, I will not watch much of Channel 7 at all. Once “Desperate Houswives”, “Body of Proof”, and “Once Upon a Time” are gone, so am I!

Carol Burnett Talks About Being a Superfan of ‘All My Children’ on ‘Live with Kelly and Mark’

In a heartfelt reunion, of sorts, the one and only Carol Burnett appeared on Monday March 25th episode of Live with Kelly and Mark.

Burnett had first met Kelly Ripa (Hayley) and Mark Consuelos (ex-Mateo) back when they all appeared on All My Children together. Carol played Verla Grubbs first in 1983 and then again in the 90’s.

Host Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley, AMC) noted to Burnett that “we go back a long time”. She also described Burnett’s character of Verla Grubbs, “extraordinary in every way.”

Carol’s love for All My Children is well-documented, hence legendary soap creator, Agnes Nixon, created the role of Verla for Burnett.

Speaking on how her passion for All My Children began, Carol told Kelly and Mark, “It started with my kids. They would watch at noon. I said, ‘What are you guys doing?’ I sat down and I started to watch and I got hooked!”

When Carol’s family decided to travel through Europe during one summer, the comedic legend recalled thinking, “How am I going to last if I don’t know what’s going on in Pine Valley?” She revealed she had a friend, “who sent me a telegram to the (different hotels) on Fridays to bring me up to date.”

In a hilarious moment from the segment, Carol recalled receiving a late night telegram while in Lake Cuomo when there was a knock at her hotel room door from the hotel manager who was shaking.

Carol related what it said, “Erica is still in a coma. Mark slipped again and ran away from rehab.” As Kelly and Mark broke into laughter, Burnett continued, “Chuck has learned that Donna is carrying his baby, who was once a hooker.”

Check out Carol explaining how she became an AMC Superfan below.

Malachy McCourt, ‘Ryan’s Hope’ and ‘All My Children’ Actor, Dead at 92

If you watched Ryan’s Hope through its 14-year-run, you know that Kevin the bartender became a beloved “member’ of the Ryan clan on the defunct ABC daytime drama series. The character of Kevin MacGuiness became so loved by the fans because of the actor who portrayed him, Malachy McCourt.

Sadly, according to his wife Diana McCourt to The New York Times, Malachy passed away on Monday from a heart condition and battling cancer. The actor was 92-years-old.

Playing Kevin on Ryan’s Hope was not much of a stretch for McCourt, because in his lifetime, he was the owner of 1950s Irish pub Malachy’s on Third Avenue in Manhattan. Known as one of the city’s great story-tellers, patrons from longshoremen to the actor Richard Harris would stop in and talk all things Irish with . On Ryan’s Hope, Kevin was best friends to “Ryan’s Bar” owner, Johnny Ryan (Bernie Barrow) and he tried to keep Delia (Ilene Kristen) on the straight and narrow.

In his soap opera career, McCourt also was widely-known for his role of Father Clarence McCourt on All My Children especially come Christmastime. Was Clarence, actually St. Nick? That was always the proverbial question. McCourt also appeared on the New York soaps: One Life To Live, Search For Tomorrow and Another World. Other roles included: Devil’s Own, Brewster’s Millions, The Molly Maguires, and Starman, to name

Later in 2006, Malachy ran for governor of the state of New York as a Green Party candidate. He tackled social issues of the time including being an advocate for gay and lesbian groups to march in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

McCourt’s childhood was recounted within his brother Frank McCourt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela’s Ashes, which detailed their mother’s attempt to raise the four of their surviving seven children in poverty in Limerick, Ireland. Later, Malachy wrote his own memoirs: 1998’s Monk Swimming, and 2000’s Singing My Him Song.

Malachy is survived by his aforementioned wife, Diana, daughter Siobhan McCourt; sons Malachy Jr., Conor and Cormac; stepdaughter Nina Galin; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
