Y&R's Daniel Goddard chats on Cane being alive afterall!

The Young and the Restless fans wanted him back, and got their wish when this week it was revealed, that Cane Ashby is actually alive and that his twin, the evil Caleb was the one who took the bullet from Blake on the steps of the church months ago!  So, EW.com was johnny-on-the-spot speaking to actor, Daniel Goddard (Cane/Caleb) to get his thoughts now that the cat has (as far as we know thus far) been let out of the bag.  Here are a few excerpts below!

Goddard on the convoluted nature of his return to the series which had been under a lot of  different speculation: “Chaos can lead to creativity. Amongst all of that, some wonderful twists and turns come into play and its somehow lent us great intrigue and mystery, which is great for the show.”

Goddard on his one regret of not being able to play Caleb longer: “I just loved him. They wrote him on paper as a bad guy who is pure evil, but more cruel than calm. Caleb was a person who always wanted his dad to love him. What was interesting is that I didn’t know as the story developed when Caleb was Caleb and when he was Cane.  I found out in the scripts. I had the feeling fans would be upset that Cane was really Caleb … Cane was Caleb pretending to be Cane who was really pretending to be Caleb… you know, I feel like Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder where he says, `I’m a dude, playing a dude, pretending to be a dude.’ I kind of relinquished my quest to control. I’ve learned now to get the script, open the script, read the script, and to try to say it in a way where you give the script the service it deserves and hopefully along the way if you say something one week and it changes the next, the fans won’t hate you. They’ll understand that we are merely squirrels on the conveyor belt of where’s the nut.”

So what do you think of Y&R’s on-air explanation of how Cane survived but Caleb died in his place?  Let us know!

I am thrilled to see that TPTB did right by the fans and brought back Daniel Goddard. We wanted him on our screen, not just because of his good looks, but because of his tremendous acting abilities. The relationship that Cane and Lily had really struck a chord with so many. That being said, I do hope that this time around the writers will give Cane a little bit of an edge. And while I am a HUGE “LANE” fan, I do hope that they don’t just throw them back together. Happy couples on soaps can tend to be a bit boring for the viewers and often the actors alike. While I do not wish to see it drawn out too long, a little drama while we watch these two lovebirds come back to each other would be a nice thing. To see some raw sexual tension and emotion take over while Lily’s logical mind wants to lead her in a different path would be a sight to see. Look at when Cane was married to Chole for the baby. The drama between them was fantastic, along with a beautiful reunion. That being said, I will be sad to see Caleb go. Daniel has been doing such a stellar job playing the evil twin. The line, “NIGHT NIGHT, NIGHT NIGHT, BYE-BYE” gives me chills every time I watch it. That kind of evil would have been great to have kept around for awhile. Definitely would have brought a whole new dynamic to the s/l. Imagine Caleb hooking up with Phyllis. What a pair those two would make LOL

I couldn’t be happier. We wanted Daniel back as Cane Ashby and from all appearancs it looks like we got just that. I only hope and pray that one of the twists is not that Caleb has been pretending to be Cane. That would not only be devastating but I would stop watching the show. Daniel has been doing an incredible job of playing the dual role. He is downright scary as Caleb. I am over the moon that he has finally been given a great s/l. One where he is able to show the depths of his talent. IMO he is one of the best actors ever. The way it was done, with Caleb being the one who was shot and killed is about the only viable way to bring back Cane and make it believable. I think the writers have done a brilliant job of meshing the two s/ls together. Especially considering the quick turnaround they had to make. I think we are in for a great ride this summer and I hope this means they plan to keep Daniel around for a long , long time as Cane Ashby and an intregal part of the Genoa City scene.

The fans wanted him back??? Not this fan! I think the producers and the writers wanted him back. I have watched Y&R since the beginning. I think the show has made a LOT of mistakes in the past few years. Keeping Cane front and center and now introducing his family is one of them. I am sure that GH fans are elated that “Robert Scorpio” and “Laura Spencer” will be back together. However, this is Y&R, not GH. It is a big mistake for Y&R to invest so much time and effort into the peripheral character of Cane and these “marquee” actors known for their work on other shows while veteran characters such as Paul, Nina, and Neil get minimal screentime.

Concerning how it is revealed that Cane is still alive, I am sure that it will be some convoluted mess of a plot blatantly ignoring key facts that don’t fit with that plot.

I have watched and enjoyed Y&R for 35 years. It is a shell of the great show it once was. Frankly, I am shocked that it remains the top rated serial with the garbage that has been tossed at the viewers for the past few years. It won’t surprise me at all if CBS does not renew it.

I stopped watching Y&R when Cane was shot, now I’m so happy that Daniel Goddard is back as Cane- TPTB shouldn’t have killed Cane off in the first place, but mistakes happen and we learn from them. Daniel Goddard is a great actor!

i am so glad cain is back – i love the character & daniel goddard!!
i think this is an awesome storyline – at the end of every show i can’t wait to see the next episode.

Whoa !! Edgar ….DISAGREE !!!

I am very glad Y&R has kept Daniel Goddard…..Cane and Lily are a great couple…and have the potential to be a SUPER COUPLE !!
I knew something was up when Cane wrote that note….that no one has found yet !!
I am looking forward to a great story…..and am a fan of Tristan and Genie’s from way back.
This is certainly a different role for her !!! CHILLING !!! I wouldn’t want GENEVIEVE for a mother !!

Clearly we have different opinions on Cane, his romance and his family. To each his own. I’m in the minority of those commenting here but I am sure that, among viewers, I’m not alone.

“A fan of Tristan and Genie’s from way back” surely will love the appearance of these two soap veterans on an entirely different show from the one where they gained recognition. For this Y&R viewer starting “way back” who hasn’t ever seen a complete episode of GH due to no interest, the idea of bringing these actors on Y&R is insulting when the writers can’t seem to give long-time Y&R actor Doug Davidson his own storyline. I’ll grit my teeth thru scene after scene of Genie Francis dominating multiple episodes each week while Davidson will be lucky to get a 2 minute scene in a week carrying Kay Chancellor’s handbag!

I won’t dispute your point on Doug Davidson…. Paul Williams has ALWAYS been a favorite character of mine.
I have watched the show since 1976 ….so for most of it’s run.
They have tried to pair him – albeit unsuccessfully with many actresses on the show and nothing lasts.
In recent years the best relationship he has had is the evolving one with daughter Heather.
And apparently he will have storyline when his 18 year old son comes to Genoa City this summer.
You know the son he had by that ‘ crazy ‘ played by Eva Longoria.
But he really is talented AND underused.

The fans definitely wanted Daniel Goddard back on Y&R as Cane…I know first hand, I was one of the thousands who bombarded CBS with e-mails, snail mail, calls, tweets, postcards and finally a plane with a banner that read ‘Y&R Fans Want Daniel Goodard As Cane Ashby” and was flown over the CBS studio in L.A. We are all so glad that our tireless efforts to keep Daniel on Y&R were not done in vain…his current storyline is great and Daniel’s portrayal of Cane’s twin brother Caleb is awesome! When Caleb told Cane “Night, night, night, night, bye, bye” I about busted a gut I laughed so hard!!

I have been apart of the campaign to Bring Daniel Goodard back only as living Cane Ashby since the begining. The writers have done a FANTASTIC JOB with this new storyline and this GFF is VERY HAPPY! DG playing Caleb gives me chills, he plays him so well. But I do LOVE Cane even more. Hiring Genie Francis to play Cane’s was a great move for Y&R. She is a soap legend. BUCKLE YOUR SEATBELTS IT’S GOING TO BE A BUMBY RIDE!
Thank You for Y&R for listening to your fans!

Daniel Goddard is an engaging enough actor, but I am no fan of the resurrection of Cane Ashby. My problem is finding any reason to root for a man so unrooted. I know soapdom is a land of over-the-top unrealities, but another lookalike/come-back-from-the-dead storyline does not hold my interest. Y&R is not what is was and, for me anyway, it is not as enjoyable to follow.

Happy that DG is back so that people can stop bitching about his “demise”… which anyone who has watched Y&R long enough would know that he wasn’t really going to be gone!

That being said, I’m not happy about the focus on all of this Australian drama when it was just reported that MTS may be off the show. She hasn’t taped scenes in a month and that is VERY distressing to this long time fan. Particulary when she is just off the heels of a major story line that saw her shining in scene after scene and somehow flying under the radar of the Daytime Emmy’s. Sheer lunacy, and a serious WTF moment!!

You mean bitching like you are about MTS not being on Canvas for a while…yeah, I thought so…

And what does DG have to do with MTS being off canvas for a minute or two…not a damn thing….and if you’re so upset about her being off canvas, get off your lazy azz and write a couple of letters about…she’s freakin’ Nikki Newman, she’s not going anywhere…and stop blaming a character for another character being off canvas…that’s strictly on MAB and Co..

And just for the record, I’m loving this Aussie invasion, I want more, maybe with this invasion, there just might me 2 mins less of the freakin’ Newmans…

have a nice day…

Maria Bell has been all over the map with this one didn’t Cane tell Lily he loved her on the church steps? Oh well this is what happens when you don’t have a story planned out and you write for a week at a time.

First of all MTS tweeted that leaving Y&R was not true and she was looking for the source of who started the rumor. Secondly, when Caleb was on the church steps I don’t think he was trying to tell Lily he loved her but instead that he was not Cane!

I told you so!!……

Glad to hear that MTS’s Nikki may not be bailing…. negative/hateful comments from other posters not withstanding…. the core of the show has always been the Newman’s, Abbots, Winters, etc…. and nothing wrong with exploring other characters (Y&R has always done this to support the main players) but here’s hoping that we can find a great balance of both, and not lose what it is that makes Y&R so important on today’s daytime canvas. I have every faith in MAB and her support team. Yes, I’m in the minority, but even haters can’t argue with numbers.

Take some of your own advice…

While I was intrigued with Caleb, I am jumping for joy that Cane is alive after all. HIs fans worked hard, putting in a lot of effort to get his return and I’m glad TPTB listened to us. Daniel Goddard is an awesome actor, no matter who he plays, but our hearts belong to Cane. Thank you to everyone over at Y&R for realizing what you had in Daniel and NOT letting him go. So far, the storyline has been captivating! I look forward to seeing it unravel with the addition of Genie Francis. Daniel, keep up the sensational job!!!! We are glad you’re back where you belong!

This is the best news. The writers are giving us a twist with a chaser. Just imagine what is to come down the road later this summer, Cane, Genie Francis, the first meeting with Jill, Katherine Chancellor, the confrontation or arrest of Colin at the mansion, Ester, and I have not even mentioned Neil, and his brother’s contempt for Cane already. My big question is will anyone ever find the letter that Caleb or did Cane write the note before going to the church, where he tells Lily that Colin is his father, the one that blew away from the wind when Sofia opened the door to Lily’s house. Revenge is sweet. I can not wait. The writers on Young and Restless are the best of the bunch. Cheers to them. Even today’s episode, Victor and Nikki the pain in his eyes as once again the love and tears in their departing brought me to tears. MTS
better get the Emmy for Best Actress next year or I will just die of sorrow….she has been denied an honor that she deserved 10 years , 15 years ago……..with this acting this week she is the best of the best……….

I totally agree with your statement! MTS rocked those last scenes. VERY heartfelt. That woman can cry on a dime and have the rest of America crying right along with her. LOVED IT, and loving every minute of my favorite show! Some parts could use a bit more oomph, but all in all it’s still my fave! 🙂

happy cane is back and alive finally lane frontburner storyline can’t wait for cane and lily reunion

I am so thrilled that Y&R realized what a mistake it was to kill Cane off! I’m loving the storyline right now. I did not care how they wrote him back as long as Cane was alive and well. Hoping for a Cane and Lily reunion! The fans deserve it!

I am so glad that Daniel Goddard remained on the show, although I am thankful that it will be as Cane and not the evil nut job brother he’s been portraying. I must say though that his performances should land him an emmy! I love Cane and Lily together and all they have been through to be together especially with Chloe and Lily’s cancer, having the babies, the death of Colleen, it would be more tragic than Romeo and Juliet if the writers didn’t throw the fans a bone here! Daniel Goddard is a find, don’t let him go and loving the Aussie mix going on here, very sexy, edgy and different! Keep it up!

Glad to see a talented actor such as Daniel Goddard brought back to the show. Why he was let go in the first place is a source of great confusion. Still, hopefully the writers have learned a salutary lesson and will not be shooting themselves in the foot again any time soon. Whilst the character of Cane originally garnered sympathy because he was a man searching for his real family, I for one, would like to see him develop in the future with a little bit of an edge – and I don’t mean turning him into Caleb. The whole Chloe debacle was laughable in the extreme as it came hot on the heels of the Amber s/line which again centred around Cane falling for complete and utter nonsense dreamed up by a borderline psychotic woman. Lily has survived ovarian cancer, losing her mother, being stalked and almost raped and a paternity mix-up and all before she’s reached the age of 22! This alone would make Cane develop a harder shell just to protect her so I would like to see that manifest in the character. The whole issue of his DNA needs to be put to bed once and for all. Lily also needs to channel her ‘inner Dru’ and stop with the whining and running to Daddy every five minutes. There endeth my wish list for TIIC (The Idiots In Charge) – to coin a well-used phrase on the regular posts!!

i am late in getting on here but i am so happy that cane is back. i could not believe it when i thought he had been killed off. he is such a great actor and i only hope that he and lily get back together because they make such a sweet couple and they have the twins between them. i just wish cane was on more often then he is. i turn on the t.v. just to watch him. but, i love all the actors on this show. i have watched the y&r every since it aired and i agree with some others that i think paul should be given more time on it. he is a great actor.
