Cody Rhodes Talks on His ‘American Nightmare’ Documentary and Road Back to the WWE

Photo: Peacock

It’s a big week for the ‘American Nightmare’ Cody Rhodes.  The WWE superstar’s documentary drops today on Peacock.  Then on Saturday, Rhodes will go up against Brock Lesnar, for what looks to be in the final time in their heated feud.

However, first comes the documentary. When viewers and fans see American Nightmare: Becoming Cody Rhodes it will chronicle the popular babyface from his early childhood to living in the shadows of his legendary father, WWE Hall-of- Dusty Rhodes.  It will also share how he battled with the nepotism that came with the ‘Rhodes’ name and much more.

In a very impressive and cinematic experience, the Cody Rhodes documentary takes you on the twist and turns, the rise and falls in his career and behind the scenes with his pro wrestling family.  This includes his time as executive vice-president and the major star of AEW.  Rhodes made the move back to the WWE and left a lucrative role and deal with the TBS/TNT wrestling brand in February 2022.  By April of 2022, Cody wanted one more shot and to ‘finish the story’ he aborted back in 2016 when he left Vince McMahon’s major league wrestling brand.

In an interview with Scott Fishman at TV Insider, Rhodes opened up about a myriad of subjects to promote the documentary on Peacock.  Cody shared on his time and departure from AEW, “You’re not going to catch me saying a bad word about AEW. I’m very proud of what I created. I know the things I created with others, Mat and Nick (Jackson), Kenny (Omega) Dana (Massie), Brandi, Tony (Khan), etc. You won’t catch me saying anything bad about it. It was a very wonderful season of my life. It was an incredibly rewarding time. Maybe it ended in a murky fashion, but by gosh, look at where we are right now. I can’t look at this more than it is a wonderful journey.”

Cody also expressed how he felt his dad “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes would have felt if he saw how Cody lost at this year’s WrestleMania 39 in the main event to Roman Reigns: “As smart as my dad was and I consider him among the guys who are super geniuses in sports entertainment in terms of how to layout and carefully craft a story and create a character and help that character connect. Even with his experience and resume, he would have been coming to WrestleMania as a dad. As a dad, he would have not liked the outcome. He would have struggled with the outcome. But he has been there.”

Make sure to catch American Nightmare: Becoming Cody Rhodes premiering July 31st, on Peacock.
