‘Brilliant Minds’ Officially Canceled After 2 Seasons at NBC; DAYS Alum Al Calderon, OLTL Alum Teddy Sears and Zachary Quinto Among the Cast
After languishing on the bubble for months, on Friday, NBC handed down the decision and canceled the medical drama Brilliant Minds after two seasons.
Brilliant Minds stars Zachary Quinto as neurology physician Oliver Wolf, who’s character and the series is inspired by the life and books of neurologist. Oliver Sacks. The series focuses on the medical mysteries of the mind, as Wolf a larger-than-life neurologist and his team of interns explore the last great frontier, the human mind, while grappling with their own relationships and mental health.
The final six episodes of what will now be the end of its second and final season were already set to air beginning on May 27, after being pulled off the network schedule in February as viewership saw a steep decline. Brilliant Minds second season became the lowest-rated drama on linear TV viewing, which didn’t bode well fo a network renewal, although it had its hard core fan base.

There are some exceptional notables in the cast along with the talented Quinto that includes Days of Our Lives alum, Al Calderon (ex-Javi Hernandez) who joined the series in its second season as Nurse Nico Silva, and One Life to Live alum, Teddy Sears (ex-Chad Bennett) who plays Wolf’s love interest and fellow physician, Dr. Josh Nichols.
The rest of the talented cast includes: Tamberla Perry, Ashleigh LaThrop, Alex MacNicoll, Aury Krebs, Spence Moore II, Donna Murphy, John Clarence Stewart, and Brian Altemus.
In an ironic twist of fate on Thursday, April 30, Days of Our Lives finally revealed the actor who was Al Calderon’s successor in the role of Javi, when they announced that actor Jacob Martinez had now stepped into the role. Since DAYS tapes ten months ahead of streaming new episode, Calderon left in the spring of 2025, but will be seen in the part for the final part this month, and then on June 20, Martinez debuts as Salem’s new Javi.
Taking to his Instagram with a sorrowful and heartfelt post on the Brilliant Minds cancellation was Teddy Sears who wrote, “Thank you, Brilliant Minds. I got the call today and I didn’t want to hear, but I knew that it would come, You have to be a particular vintage to quote Don Henley from memory, but that’s the line that came to mind earlier today after I got off the phone with our inimitable showrunner Michael Grassi who delivered the news that NBC has cancelled the series”.

Photo: NBC
Sears continued, “To say that I feel sad to be moving on from these stories, this character, and this cast and crew just doesn’t paint the entire picture. I’m sad, sure. But I’m also deeply grateful that I got hired to play this part, so proud of the stories we told, and the other actors I got to play alongside. I’m excited to see what comes next, what adventures await, and terrified to be without a professional home. A quick and heartfelt thank you to everyone, all over the globe, who found us and found themselves in us, in our characters and in our stories. We wouldn’t have been able to tell them without you. And we still have 6 fresh episodes yet to air, and I do hope you tune in enjoy the remainder of the series. They’re the best we’ve done.”
As he wrapped up his sentiments, Sears signed off with, “The more I know, the less I understand. All the things I figured out I have to learn again. I’ve been trying to get down to the heart of the matter. But everything changes…Thank you, Brilliant Minds.”
The medical drama was created and executive produced by Michael Grassi alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, Lee Toland Krieger, DeMane Davis, Jasmine Russ, Henrik Bastin, Jonathan Cavendish, Andy Serkis and Shefali Malhoutra.

Taking to his Instagram to celebrate the nominations, GH’s Bennett, enthused, “3 Critic Choice Nominations! I’m so proud of the FINDING MR CHRISTMAS and to be in the company of all the legends in all these categories is so surreal! Congrats to Hallmark Channel and to our nominated cast and nominated show and everyone who made this magical show possible. This is crazy! This gives FMC 6 Critics Choice nominations in 2 years. Not bad for a little show on Hallmark Channel. What are your thoughts on our show?” Jumping first into the comment thread was one of his new GH co-stars, Dominic Zamprogna (Dante) who expressed, “Yeah buddy!!!🔥🔥”
In the series, Bennett, the host and co-creator spends eight weeks guiding 10 aspiring actors through a series of “festive face-offs” and acting challenges alongside actors like soap opera notables, Hunter King (ex-Summer, Y&R) and Alison Sweeney (Sami, DAYS). Along the way, they develop their skills and a bond with one another. The show, which is available on Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Plus, highlights LGBTQ+ representation with openly gay contestants vying to be the next Hallmark star.
It should be noted that Traitors received the most Critics Choice Real TV Award nominations with 6 nods, followed by Dancing with the Stars with 4.
Bennett is very familiar to daytime fans having started his career as JR Chandler on All My Children in 2000-2001, before landing the part of Aaron Samuels in the motion picture, Mean Girls in 2004 starring Lindsay Lohan, which would become his breakout performance.

‘General Hospital’s’ Kelly Thiebaud on Britt and Cassius Sibling Drama, But Who Will Ultimately Blow His Cover?
On the April 30 episode of General Hospital, Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) had some choice words and warning for her brother Cassius Faison (Ryan Paevey) who has been masquerading as his twin, the very dead, Nathan West.
As the story has unfolded, viewers learned that Britt knew all along that when “Nathan” showed up in Port Charles seemingly resurrected with a missing 7 years of his life unexplained, that Cassius was taking his place.
Now in developments on today’s GH, Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy) is figuring out that this guy pretending to be Nathan is someone else, and Cassius learns from Britt, that Joss is not just a ditzy sorority girl as he claimed, but a WSB agent! The moment stuns Cassius. Are the walls about to close in on him and his charade?

Courtesy/ABC
Daytime Emmy winner, Kelly Thiebaud spoke to Soap Opera Digest, about the story point and getting the opportunity this time back at GH to work with Ryan Paevey, when she hadn’t had the chance to before.
BROTHERLY LOVE?
Thiebaud expressed on sharing scenes with Ryan Paevey, “It’s just been so wonderful to have him back and to actually work with him! When he first came onto the show (as Nathan at the end of 2013) I was kind of heading out — it was right towards the end of my contract, so we didn’t actually work together a ton. It’s been really refreshing and so much fun to really spend time together and get to know each other and work together. I think we have really great on-camera chemistry and banter with each other. I really enjoy working with him.”
With the stakes at an all-time, Thiebaud explained how she views her on-screen alter-ego’s involvement with her more hot-to-temper sibling and why Britt revealed the truth about Josslyn to him. “People finding out about Cassius would expose what she’s involved in and what she agreed to do,” explains Kelly “And now Josslyn is digging around, and she’s connected to Carly (Laura Wright) to Jason (Steve Burton) and that whole dynamic! It’s messy!”
BRITT’S MURKY FUTURE
Britt has currently also reached her breaking point with Jason being carted away by the WSB, Rocco (Finn Carr), the child she gave birth to, shooting Cullum (Andrew Hawkes) to protect her and Jason, Marco (Adrian Anchondo) being killed after trying to help her, and Cullum holding over her head getting her Huntington’s disease medication to control her symptoms, while blackmailing her into finishing the research on her father, Cesar Faison’s, final project. Thiebaud summed it up best for Britt right now, sharing, “It’s been a really tough time for her.”
So, who do you think will be the person to blow Cassius’ cover? Will it be Britt herself? Josslyn? Liesl? Brennan? Nina? Lulu? Rocco, Maxie, Cullum or someone else? Let us know your pick in the comment section.

Cole
You want Cole to die, you’re just mean.
TODD
YES I THINKS ITS TODD ALSO- SAD
I hope it’s Todd! Couldn’t stand him before, still can’t stand him now! What a waste of time bringing him back!
Wow, how heartless are you? You don’t even deserve to watch. Roger Howarth is one of the best actors on the show.
I wouldn’t be so quick to defend someone who left OLTL & only came back because ATWT was cancelled! Trevor was a 100% better Todd!
It’s someone connected to Starr and Blair or why would they be upset? My money is on Todd.
I hope that Prick the Pornographer meets his demise.
that will be nice ,I cant stand him either, every time he is on ,he makes my skin crawl, but why would star seem concerned about him? I really have no guesses on who it is yet,I hope its not cole or todd.maybe its one of those ford brothers no one likes.well, I for sure will be tuned in to find out.I still cannot believe we have only 9 days left to watch this show.time seems to be going quickly now ,I wish we had more time,or hear good news that one life to live will continue.
This is so very heart breaking knowing that this series is coming to an end. Especially after watching some of the older episodes from the soapnet marathon on Sunday. The look in Erika Slezak’s eyes at the end of the wild west episode when as Ginny she saw Viki walk in on her wedding to Clint was just incredible. Without saying a word you could see what was going on in her mind. I am going to miss Ms. Slezak, I hope she continues to act.
If its Cole I’ll cry even if its NOT Buddy because thats who i’ll be thinking of.
It sounds like alot of actions coming.
IM SO UPSET WITH THE ENDING SO CLOSE-LET IT BE KNOWN WHEN THIS SOAP IS OFF AND GONE SO WILL ABC/DISNEY I WILL NEVER WATCH ANOTHER SHOW ON THIS NET WORK THAT INCLUDES DISNEY. JUST WATCHEN THIS PROMO JUST MAKES ME SICK .I DID RECORD SUNDAYS AND WILL ALSO RECORD THESE NEXT 2 WEEKS BUT WHEN WE SAY GOOD BY TO OLTL IT WILL BE GOODBY AND GOOD RIDDENS ABC/DISNEY
I’m with you i’m sick of the corporate people telling me i want reality shows and talk shows!
They give us cheap garbage we don’t want so they can keep more profits for themselves, bigger bonuses!
I think it’s cole it could be Todd I don’t care as long as Bo and Nora and Matthew don’t die!!!!
It will probably be Todd…and he’ll make a death-bed confession that he’s the one that killed Victor.
I am thinking the same thing…..
no todd cant die and I dont think he killed victor. It has to be someone else.how sad 8 more days .
Although, it could also be Jack….
Never thought of Jack but it would make sense since who ever gets it is close to Starr and Blair!
Why would Blair be that upset if it is Cole? I would think it is probably Todd because I do not think RH was ever going to Prospect Park who knows the marathon was good I had not seen a lot of those episodes great to see my Asa loved the actor and the character.
Maybe it’s Todd since some of the dead characters like Gabrielle (and I’m forgetting the other one) come back before the end also. Maybe his life is just in limbo like when Vicki went to heaven.
I would hate for Todd to die after killing his brother, I was hoping they would find out he was really brainwashed or Irene really did it. The Todd and Victor Jr story should have been written so much better. TSJ should have been able to come back (assuming he wanted to).
Talk about a woman carrying a show….. Erika Slezak’s, another Erica to say the least. Only thing, this Erika is a real person. This lady like Susan Lucci, is CLASS but without all the FUSS and high maintenance. Erika Slezak is the Meryl Streep of Daytime. Actually, I would bet every dollar in my Bank Acct, that Erika Slezak (if given the opportunity with a major Leading Role in the movies, she could and would come home with the Oscar from th Academy Awards. I love you Erika (Vicky) Slazak. Please do Broadway, win a Tony. Take a major role in Prime-Time and win an Emmy. Audtion for a lead in the movies, and bring home the Oscar as the 1st soap actor with 6 Recording Breaking Emmy’s, and the ONLY to win and Oscar…!
Erika, I love you. And I adore how STRONG you are in your SPOT. You always give prompts to Robin Stresser (Dorian Lord). I will miss watching you and learning from you on screen. You are amazing!
Nice post. And ‘ditto’
Watching much of the SoapNet OLTL marathon New Year’s Day proves your points, friend. She is incredible, even if the material is almost too much to believe. Class act? You got that right! I told my partner that Slezak surely must do legit theatre. She is clearly a consummate actress. I would love to see her in classics (Chekov) and contemporary roles. I cannot see Slezak ever “going Califorinia” and the movies though.
You said it all, erika slezak is class ,And I will miss visiting with her everyday.Bring out the tissues people ,this will be for me the hardest ending of a soap .I cried through those 14 hours on soap net and now I have to watch the dismantling of the best soap and group of people ever,on daytime television history ,thankyou to all the cast ,writers for coming into my home 5 days a week for decades of enjoyment ,you will be missed.
My guess, the person on the stretcher in the ER that Starr is referring to, is Cole NOT Todd.
I agree. I feel like they’re intentionally misleading us by showing the sobbing Blair clip so close to it. I bet Cole dies saving his daughter.
I agree i think it is cole on the stretcher and he is the one she is referring to. and i also think they are misleading us by showing blair sobbing in the clip.this is like a few weeks ago in the promo they showed gigi and rex and todd and blair. two different storylines and they had starr say to todd not to fool around if you love someone tell them. well it was not todd who tells blair he loved her it was rex telling gigi he loved her! so these promos are definatly misleading to get you to watch.
Thats good drama,I love the writers of one life to live.best stories ever,General hospital is lucky to get them.
I think the reason Hannah is @ the house is because she’s come to finish what she started & kill Starr. Cole sees Harrah & follows her into the house. Hannah holds Starr @ gun point. Cole comes out of the shadows & takes a bullet for Starr. I don’t believe Cole dies though in the ER. I think the person that dies, is Ford. He will take a button too protecting his woman, but sadly he will pay with his life. Cole & Starr will elope with Hope in toe with Todd & Blair’s help. Leaving both families to live out their lives happily ever after, but seperately. My guess, Cole,Starr & Hope will start their new life family life together by joining Patrick & Marty full time. While they travel back to visit Starr’s family often.
I don’t know how to explain the sadness I feel to others, without them thinking I am crazy. I know it’s just television, but I LOVE OLTL. WHY does a show this BREATHTAKINGLY STUPENDOUS have to end?
I feel exactly the same way. The cancellation of this show is the worst thing that happened to me in 2011. Because without it where do you turn for escape? When huge, tragic things happen, which they seem to every day, everywhere and you can tune them out for an hour a day with your Llanview friends the world doesn’t seem so bad, does it? Now what? What to count on, look forward to, be excited about every day? I felt so happy & relieved in early July when we thought the show was going online, got my first good sleep since April 14. Then the bombshell dropped on us very cruelly on the night before Thanksgiving. This has really put a damper on my holidays-no matter how good everything else is going there is the black cloud of January 13 looming. I cannot stand it.
After I wrote this, I read another thread of Michael’s–Best and Worst List of 2011 (Dec 31)–where someone compared OLTL to a “pile of garbage,” and I felt worse, for a moment, until I read your response. Thank you, Gloria.
I don’t know where to look for escapist entertainment on television anymore either. I like the intergenerational family drama of OLTL; I’ve grown to love the characters and actors like my own family. And like you, I really look forward to it everyday. I feel disappointed when the weekend comes because OLTL isn’t on. It’s funny that the last sentence you wrote–I cannot stand it–is actually the first sentence I wrote, but I deleted it before submitting.
The loss of OLTL is painful for those of us who have cherished it for years. It is like the death of a beloved family member. We will cry and grieve. But I think the last thing the cast, crew, writers, and producers would want is for loyal viewers to remember OLTL sadly after so many wonderful years. We must go on and seek solace elsewhere. Gloria, you won’t be alone.

I really do not want to be right here… but I think it could be Sam. He’s been so great to watch… too bad it couldn’t be James. Actually not sure why we have to end the show this way…
Has to be Rick the Prick. Who would they kill off this late in time? Nobody who matters much. I still say Todd is arrested, but killed?
Would love to watch the promo… but it’s not available in Canada !!!!!!!
I am hoping it is not Todd. I think OLTL’s end will allow for some redemption on the character and hope for he and Blair to finally be the couple they are destined to be. Cole or Rick are better guesses, particularly Cole (Weren’t they trying to woo back the actor?) I keep praying the finale will not be the disappointment AMC’s was or the rush-job GL was. Some did not care for it, but I thought ATWT ended well with its OUR TOWN take on Oakdale. No, it did not have as much history shared and all, but it was effective for me.
Damn, you watch all the soaps, how do you keep up with so many on more than one channel? I mean, you know the ending of these other shows……
We are a big ABC family, until I defected to CBS. (I never watched NBC programs save for SUNSET BEACH (loved their shipwreck plot line). I often would switch back and forth. I would tape some, then technology allowed online and DVR. And there was Soapnet. Thanks to Michael Fairman and others like him (the great Lynda Hirsch) you could keep up with all the plots. I like to watch the youtube clips and read anniversary books and other histories, too. But I do not know everything. There are gaps. Daytime drama is a great genre. I feel as my dad must have when he spoke of radio shows. He always missed them. I am missing my soaps.
I don’t think there was anything wrong with the final episode of Guiding Light (though the final episode of ATWT might have been better). But then again, I never watched Guiding Light other than its final episode on Youtube. So it’s hard for me to really judge if it was a rush ending. But as a one time viewer, the GL ending seemed reasonnable to me.
As for the final episode of All My Children? No comments.
CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS…. WHICH WAS POSTED ON DECEMBER 7th, UNDER NEW SOAP BUZZ……
( Here we go again, soapers! And let’s hope nobody is yanking on the chain of the soap world again! But, news out today from Variety is that Prospect Park is still looking to bring One Life to Live and All My Children online! )
WHAT HAPPENED, are they still looking? I have been looking on this site and other’s for an update since Dec 7th, so I thought it was STILL a possibility…. I was aware in the article that for AMC it might be a LONG HAUL, but OLTL seemed moreso. WHAT HAS OCCURED SINCE DEC 7th? And, WHERE DID YOU READ IT AND WHERE CAN I FIND IT TO READ IT?
nothing,There has been no more talk other then they are looking for funding overseas,At the google news ,I have a one life to live updates and there is a interview with erika slezak.and she said that pps heart was in bringing the soaps on the net but everyone on the show ,well there all going in different directions ,thats bad.she also said that the main reason abc drop the soaps is greed ,as I said all along ,both amc and oltl were doing good in the ratings abc wants out and I think gh is next, there changing the face of daytime tv for cheep crap shows and she also said that alot of people will be out of work,so abc disney the family channel doesnt really care about family, look what they have done by killing the history of all my children and one life to live for more talk shows to shove down our throats ,I for one will not be watching.
i think Sam dies, i read somewhere that Hannah takes Sam hostage and that new old todd tries to save him….hmmm well maybe todd does die and that is how the score with victor is even.
This sounds truly scary–yikes!
