ABC Cancels Milo Ventimiglia’s ‘The Company You Keep’ and David E. Kelley’s ‘Big Sky’

Photo: ABC

Even with its strong lead-in on Sunday night’s of American Idol, the Milo Ventimiglia starring vehicle, The Company You Keep was axed by ABC and will not move forward after its first season.

This was Ventimiglia’s first network dramatic lead role following hia successful run as Jack Pearson on This Is Us for six seasons.  Milo was also an EP of the series.

In story, The Company You Keep followed con man Charlie (Ventimiglia) and undercover CIA officer Emma (Catherine Haena Kim) and how they were romantically linked even though one was working for the law and the other against the law. Eventually, the two team-up to bring down the bad guys.  William Fichtner, Tim Chiou, Freda Foh Shen, James Saito, Sarah Wayne Callies, Felisha Terrell, and Polly Draper were also part of the cast.

Big Sky has also been sent to ABC heaven! The show from executive producer David E. Kelley, will end at three seasons.  It’s unclear if the series will be shopped to another network or streamer.  When Big Sky debuted in November of 2020, it had Ryan Phillippe (ex-Billy Douglas, OLTL) attached to its first season, and a dark mystery reminiscent of Twin Peaks that drew viewers in with strong numbers. After Phillippe’s character is shockingly killed-off at the end of season one, the show never caught the fire it had.

Season three saw private detective Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury), undersheriff Jenny Hoyt (Kathyrn Winnick), join forces with a newly appointed sheriff Beau Arlen played by Supernatural and Days of our Lives favorite, Jensen Ackles. In story, they run up against the seemingly nefarious Sunny Barnes (Reba McEntire) and a mystery about campers where no one is to be trusted.

Of note: Alaska Daily starring two-time Oscar winner, Hillary Swank, was also shown the front door by ABC after one season.

So, sad to hear that ‘The Company You Keep’ and ‘Big Sky’ have been canceled? Did you watch the drama series at any points during its run? Comment below.

I loved and looked forward every week to The Company You Keep. I have always liked Milo Ventimiglia and William Fichtner, did not care for CIA girl friend.
Also liked seeing Tony Shalub in guest appearance.
I gave up on Big Sky after a while, could not stay interested.

I never saw Company You Keep. but-
I was into Big Sky . it is heavy drama-never a dull moment.

I love THE COMPANY YOU KEEP! Please don’t cancel this show!!! I look forward to it every week. Try a different time slot other than late Sunday night
Please

I second that.

I agree! The chemistry of the characters is amazing. I have an idea. How about axing The Rookie Feds instead. That show is dreadful and the acting worse.

Loved the company you keep

Why take the company you keep off the best thing ABC had on it besides Jeopardy, I’m going back to Pluto or another network same thing happened when Katy Sagal show got canceled she was terrific! Another network please pick this show up ! Milo is hot! It takes a lot to get me interested in something and I loved this! He is terrific, Big mistake ABC

I enjoyed Big Sky. Hope it is saved as mentioned in the article.

Agreed , this is a good show! WhAt are the folks thinking at ABC? But they have Grey’s Anatomy on for years – it’s run it’s course – cancel that one instead.

It is totally disgusting that this show got canceled. Looked forward to seeing this on Sunday nights. They should have maybe tried it on another night…
Hopefully they can show it on another station.

What a load of dragonshit… ABC always cancelling the good shows, while keeping crapfests like “American Idol” and “The Batchelor” running for all eternity.

Big Sky definitely deserved a renewal. The Company You Keep… had some potential, but needed a little bit of work. Probably would have improved in the second season without the idiot Irish mob guys getting in the way.

Should I even ask if the network has gone on the record one way or the other about a General Hospital renewal?

I agree with you so much you make so much sense and yes I watch general hospital hope they don’t take that away from us too

Agree!

Agree

I agree. With the conclusion of the season and the Irish family out of the way, and now looking to be a special unit, give the series lots of options and material to build around. Can’t understand how retread shows keep getting a reprieve and good shows with promise keep getting axed.

Agreed on all points. Grays, big brother, American idol all need to go away. Only shows I watch on network tv are now cancelled.

100 percent agree

milo is the man but i didn’t take to the show at all and big sky had one good season gh and all abc is hands down the worst network maybe bringing back dancing with the stars and now having 911 could help turn the network around

Was really pulling for The Company You Keep to renew but knew that the ratings of 2.25 M viewers despite American Idol as a lead-in was not good company. Wish Milo the best moving forward. Never watched Big Sky.

Why remove The Company You Keep of the air?? It is a very good show shame on you Milo is the absolute best if the of the best. I will definitely miss the show.

Me too! It was a great show. I looked at Milo so differently then when he played the part in This Is Us…

The company you keep , is such a good series .shame on ABC . thanks to ABC , we are now stuck with the batchelor and medical dramas , and that silly detective series with the dog . I will not be watching anything on ABC going forward .

Wendy,
Hey Wendy, I love that” silly detective series with the dog” Betty is the star

Totally Agree! ABC should bring it back
I hate the Bachelor nothing but a sex show…

In total agreement! ABC please bring back
“The Company You Keep” for at least a second season: It’s an outstanding drama; in addition, to being informative!!!

Big Sky sucked with Reba McEntrye. Her mouth does not move and her acting is awful.

Yes I watched both shows.
Enjoyed the storyline.
I am very disappointed the shows have been cancelled.
That always happens

I like a show and it gets cancelled.
The company you keep was my favorite.

Absolutely! Was so excited to see Emma and Charlie working together for the new season! Big Sky was good! Why do these networks keep the stupid reality and cartoon shows in and ax the dramas??? ABC is stupid! Hoping another network picks them up!

Debbie ABC is definitely stupid and hope they lose their viewer’s. Yes, agree hope another network picks them up on a different night. I feel Sunday night people might go to bed earlier.

I loved booth shows

Agree, watched both shows and enjoyed both! Company You Keep my new favorite.

Who makes thes

Idiots at ABC make these decisons!

Good answer, they should get awards for stupidity.

Why would you take away 2 shows that were so good and had so many fans especially Big sky. It’s so unfair you keep garbage on ABC but let such a good show like big sky go.

We watched every episode of The Company you keep and looked forwarded to watching it every week. Please bring it back.

Very disappointed that the shows were cancelled!!! ABC is making a big mistake!!!!

I would look forward to Sunday nights knowing I would see the company you keep. ABC always takes away the good shows and I love ABC

Yes, I loved Company you keep! I’ll watch anything with William Fichtner. Really bummed, actually upset. Considering the show wasn’t in great time slot 10pm Sundays. How it got canceled & shows like the Night court reboot were given season 2 WTF ‍♂️

Exactly!

I’m am upset and sad that both of my favorite shows and actors are living. I loved them both and couldn’t wait to see the next season.
Please bring it back for more episodes and seasons.

Abc is the ALREADY BEEN CANCELLED network. Sunday’s at 10 pm is a very tough time slot. Abc did not do it justice by canceling this after one season. It deserved z fighting chance which it was NOT provided.

Will miss Big Sky and especially Alaska Daily. That should have been given one more season to catch on.

I watch both of them. Why can’t the good shows stay and remove some of the stupid ones.

Big Sky was never the same after the first season. It lost its mojo.I enjoyed the Company you Keep! Both Milo and William Fictner are actors of quality that I enjoy watching. I think that show had potential and I was looking forward to a second season.

I look forward to The Company you Keep, Big Sky and Alaska Daily. You take them off and leave other useless shows. These show are entertaining

CBS UNCANCELLED S.W.A.T.. Get w/ the PROGRAM ABC. ABC UNCANCEL THE COMPANY YOU KEEP. FIGHT BACK MILO AND COMPANY.

SHARONA

So agree

Perhaps another network can pick up The Company You Keep. NBC?

That’s not likely, since it’s an “in-house” production under the “20th Televison” label. As is Alaska Daily. So the only other possibilities would be another Di$ney owned outlet. It might fit on the Freeform or FX cable channels or stream exclusively on Hulu. Not a snowball’s chance in Hell that another broadcast network picks it up.

“Big Sky” has slightly better odds as A&E owns a piece of that show, and it would be a perfect fit for that cable channel. Or it least it would be if they still run original (non reality crap) programming. Haven’t had anything to watch on that channel down here in Hell lately.

Agree 100 percent!

Agree! Bring back these shows

I love The Company you Keep!! Please don’t cancel!!

Please don’t cancel the Company you Keep!!

The Company you keep was a great show, great actors. Shame on abc with so much junk on tv!!!

Why does all the good shows get canceled for the networks to put on crap. Done with ABC

I can’t believe you canceled the company you keep. It was so good and you didn’t even give it a chance. You should of tried a different day and time slot
I loved that show

I never missed an episode of The Company You Keep and was looking forward to it’s return. ABC is known for canceling shows people become invested in. By the way how accurate are the ratings? Hope it still has a chance to get renewed, or get picked up by another station.

Once again, they cancel the good ones and keep the crappy ones. Oh well, guess I’ll be watching less TV.

We did watch the company you keep, and thought it was exciting and wonderful. Sad to see it cancelled.

The Company You Keep had a very good storyline as well as very good casting and acting. ABC may feel that it positioned it well in its line-up … but … come on 10 PM on a Sunday Night? Sunday Night has the strongest amount of good shows … tough night for a show to die on. The Company you keep deserved another season … at a different time slot … at least that much. Milo … as Executive Producer … why didn’t you fight harder?

PLEASE don’t cancel The Company You Keep.

Why bother to get interested in any of the shows ABC puts on the air … my family and I enjoy all three of the shows getting the ax!!! Sickening

You cancelled my favorite 3 shows. What are you guys thinking. Feeling disrespected by the network.

Need to ask fans before cancelling shows. Loved these shows. Abc you are messing up.

I am very upset to hear that Big Sky and The Company you Keep are being canceled. I never missed an episode of either show. I hate when you get into a show and then the network has the ability to cancel them. Very disappointing!

Agree I love Big Sky watched from the first episode as well as the company you keep. There is nothing else worth watching on ABC.

Big Sky is a great program. We watched it on demand because we were never home for its original broadcast but we never missed. It was a highpoint of our television week. Hopefully, it will be picked up by another network and the story continued.

I love them both! I hope they re-think the cancellation. I watched The Company you keep as a “ binge watch” and I loved it. Please please change your minds!!!!

Such a great show!! Very disappointed you would cancel it!

Thought company you keep was good and had a lot of potential

I cannot understand why they would ever cancel The company You keep it is a great it’s exciting it keeps you guessing and if you don’t think Milo isn’t good to look at you’re wrong. Bring it back

Yes, I hate ABC, they cancelled all the shows I love.

The company you keep was great! Love Milo! Can another channel bring it back?

I am so disappointed that The Company You Keep has been cancelled. It is my favorite show. The cast is wonderful.

My heart was broken to see The Company You Keep will not be continuing. Loved the entire cast!! Please come back!

I was so excited to have two new favorites, The company you keep and Will Trent. Such a dissapointment to lose one. There is not much else on television worth watching.

I agree….

I watched both.
I don’t watch that many shows because I can usually “predict” them before the 1st series of commercials.
I missed some of Season 2 with Big Sky but kept up with it on S3.
The Company You Keep had me tuned in because my wife & I made a viewing night together with it.
I suspected it might not return because of the writer’s strike.
I don’t watch any reality programming, or any of the game shows. It’s pablum, Flavorless swill. So. That’s my opinion.
I’m sure many disagree.

So mad they are canceling 2 shows I like.

ABC cancels to soon. Need to give more time after just one season … seriously?? The company you keep great characters! Big sky never dull So disappointed in ABC and their cancellations but keeps The Bachelor and Bachelorette… they should be streamed!!!

Some other network needs to pick up These 2 shows.
They are different then most showes
ABC screwed up.

I enjoyed Big Sky and am so sorry that it has been csncelled. I watched it every week. I hope one of the streaming channels will pick it up along with Alaska Daily. This latter series awakened viewers to the tragic circumstances surrounding the missing Native Amerixan women. No other program that I am aware of has done that.
If ABC is truly interested in the challenges that minorities face, Alaska Daily provided that opporunity. ABC could have used Alaka Daily to
spotlight needs among Native communities.ABC has done that fot
other minority populations. Why not
Native ones?

Yes..Im So disappointed that
The Company you Keep will not have a 2nd seasona..it was edgy an great adult entertainment.

Never cancel Milo! He can bring viewers regardless, your writers arent making t
He mark with the love scenes… get more there.. maybe they arent into eachother? Not sure…?

Don’t cancel Company you Keep! It is a great show

So disappointed. The Company you Keep was a great show! So tired of networks not letting shows have a chance. Maybe they need a different time slot. Alaska daily was on a tough heavy hitter night, but it was a story that needed to be told in order to shed light on the high numbers of missing indigenous women in our country. Big Sky was also good with two women leads. Instead of just trashy tv, bachelorette bs and stupid games shows , these shows offered something we need….. an escape…A family that took care of each other and clearly were bound by love and loyalty and an informative story about a small town paper covering an important and timely topic that more people need to know about. It’s really not worth investing in network tv anymore.
So disgusted

Loved loved company you keep
Great cast ,give them another time slot
Time for rookie and feds to go !

Company you keep Great show but a lousy time slot! Please reconsider .Hopefully some other network will pick it up. ABC desicion makers as usual make dumb choices for programming.

George Cheeks, CBS President & CEO, on Timeline to Launch New Daytime Drama, ‘The Gates’: “We’re So Focused on Getting it Right”

March 2024 will be remembered in the TV and soap world when the news broke that CBS is prepping a brand new daytime drama. Many had thought a major network would never bring a new daytime soap into the world, given that the last time it was attempted was 25 years ago when the now defunct Passions bowed on NBC.

However, The Gates is definitely in development and moving forward with some major players associated with it including: Michele Val Jean as The Gates writer, showrunner and one of its executive producers, and Sheila Ducksworth from NAACP Venture

Now, for the first time since its announcement, George Cheeks, the president and CEO of CBS and chief content officer for news and sports at Paramount+, spoke on the project that will feature a Black family as its central focus who live in a wealthy gated community.

Photo: NAACP

Speaking with Vulture, and when asked if The Gates is really something that truly has a chance of getting on the air, Cheeks clarified, “It’s super real. And just to give you a little bit of the backstory,  when we hired Sheila Ducksworth to run the NAACP Venture, she and I had multiple meetings talking about what different genres she was going to lean into, and we talked a lot about daytime.”

Cheeks added, “One of the things that the data made very clear to both of us is that daytime soap operas over index with Black women, and yet when you look at soap operas, it’s usually sort of a white-led family with supporting characters that reflect more of our society. So we just thought, wouldn’t it be interesting to flip that and make the core anchor family a Black family, and then make the other characters reflect more the broader scope of society?”

Photo: JPI

The CEO gave props to Michele Val Jean,  and how Ducksworth came to the table with the former B&B and GH writer. “She found this great writer, Michele Val Jean, who’s been in the soap opera space for 30 years. She came up with a pitch, and we loved it,” shares Cheeks. “We brought Procter & Gamble into it as well, because if there were going to be (product) integrations, we could do it more holistically and organically. All of that is to say, we did a lot of work on the front end to put this together. So while yes, it’s development, it’s accelerated development.”

When prodded on the timeline of when The Gates could come to full fruition, Gates related, “The actual timeline and when we’re going to do it is still uncertain, because we want to get this right. I mean, there hasn’t been a new soap opera launch since I can’t even begin to tell you when. But we have great success with Bold and the Beautiful and Young and the Restless, and so we think we’re the right folks to be launching a new soap. I wish I could tell you more about exact timing, but we’re so focused on getting it right, and that will dictate when we’re ready to launch it.”

The CBS exec also shared that whether The Gates will wind up an hour soap or half-hour is not yet determined, but that it is being developed as an hour show.

So, after reading what George Cheeks, the CBS President & CEO had to say about ‘The Gates’, are you even more excited for what looks to the first new network soap in 25 years? Comment below.

Robyn Bernard, ‘General Hospital’s’ Terry Brock, Dead at 64

Former General Hospital star, Robyn Bernard, who played aspiring singer Terry Brock has died. She was 64-years-old.

Bernard’s body was found Tuesday in San Jacinto, California. A Riverside County Coroner told TMZ they identified the actress’ body using her fingerprints after deputies responded to a death investigation call on Tuesday March 12th.

Sources told the outlet that Bernard’s body was found in the wee hours of the morning. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

Bernard joined General Hospital back in 1984 as Terry Brock, the daughter of the abusive D.L. Brock (played by David Groh). Robyn remained on the ABC soap opera for six years before making her exit in 1990. At one point, Terry’s stepmother would become Bobbie Spencer (the late Jackie Zeman) when the nurse married her father.

Terry was involved in the Laurelton Murders storyline and after first setting her sights on Frisco Jones, wound up with killer Kevin O’Connor. Later, Terry was blamed for several murders and in the end killed Kevin in self-defense. In addition, Terry had a relationship with Dusty Walker played by none other than Shaun Cassidy.  She eventually left Port Charles after landing her own recording contract.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) revealed on Tuesday, that the 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on Friday night, June 7th (8 – 10 PM, ET/delayed PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+*.

This year will mark the 18th time CBS has broadcast the Daytime Emmy Awards, which is more than any other network.

The 2024 Daytime Emmys will take place at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles. Back in December of 2023, the delayed 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards were also held at that venue. The June 7th date for the upcoming ceremony will be the first time in several years that the event is scheduled a few weeks earlier than normal; excluding last year’s revised date to the actors and writers strikes.

Lifetime Achievement honoree, nominations, host, and additional information will be announced in the coming weeks.

In a statement, Adam Sharp, President and CEO of NATAS noted, “We eagerly anticipate our return in June as we once again partner with CBS to recognize the exceptional and talented individuals who make daytime television great. We’re thrilled to kick off our second half-century of the Daytime Emmys.”

The Daytime Emmy Awards have recognized outstanding achievement in television programming and crafts since 1974, honoring work in a variety of categories, including daytime dramas, talk shows, instructional programming, hosting, culinary, and legal/courtroom programs. In 2021, NATAS and the Television Academy jointly announced plans to realign the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre, as opposed to program airtime.

The 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will once again be produced by NATAS and Associated Television International (ATI), which produced Daytime Emmy Award ceremonies on The CW in 2009 and on CBS in 2010, 2011, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
