ABC Exec Nathan Varni On Future Of AMC & OLTL And Utilizing Characters For GH!

Now that ABC had the rights back to two of its most popular and beloved soap operas; All My Children and One Life to Life, fan groups and longtime ABC daytime viewers want to know what might happen with the two soaps.

And in addition, if they might now utilize characters from Llanview and Pine Valley and bring them over to GH and the town of Port Charles!

ABC executive Nathan Varni, who has GH under the series that he manages for the network, took to posting a message on the group ,“Save AMC and OLTL” Facebook page

Varni wanted to answer the inquiries coming his way about future use of characters on GH and if anything might happen to reignite AMC and OLTL back on your screens.

Check out his post after the jump, and let us know if you would be all for characters from OLTL and AMC coming on to the canvas on GH? If not, do you hope that AMC and OLTL will get a serious look from the network to possibly, somehow be revitalized? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

I wouldnt mind seeing some characters making guest appearances every know and then but lets kill off Franco and Finn and bring them back as their OLTL characters…ALL MY CHILDREN have more than ONE LIFE TO LIVE on GENERAL HOSPITAL-lol

My solution is for ABC to cancel GH and bring back OLTL and AMC in half hour editions. Two shows and the same amount of soap time but without the glorification of criminals as the “heroes.”

4ever DAYS
4ever DAYS

Why drop GH, Alan? ABC should get a clue and reduce ‘The View’ and ‘The Chew’ to 30 minutes each, while adding AMC and OLTL in their places! Then, if that proves successful, reduce GH to 30 minutes and add Days of our Lives! ABC would be the King of Daytime with 30 minutes of each and every program!

Jimh(leave it to beaver)

i would like to see Days cut to 30 minutes and the cast trimmed instead of cancellation if those rumors are true…

PLEASE REDUCE THE VIEW AND THE CHEW TO 0 MINUTES…ANY SOAP OPERA OR ANY OTHER TYPE OF SHOW WOULD BE BETTER THAN THIS WASTE OF TIME….THE VIEW IS A HORRIBLE SHOW AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN CANCELLED LONG LONG AGO!

Two hour soap block. GH, 1 hour, the others 30 minutes.

Days of our Lives isn’t canceled. Megyn Kelly would replace the third hour of the Today show. In the article, they said they might and they could. But it’s not definite.

Yes, cancel The View…too many talk shows on as it is, this one died when Barbara W. left…The Chew is a farce of a food show, let’s see AMC, give it a good reboot !

Sorry Alan, you lost me at “Cancel GH”, that automatically makes me want to disregard the entire rest of the post.

I would be all for OLTL and/or AMC returning in some form, although that seems like a pipe dream fantasy at this point. But certainly not at the expense of GH. If ABC thought the fan backlash they received when they cancelled AMC and OLTL was something, cancel General Hospital and see what happens.

No I don’t like the idea of cancelling gh why

GH is horrible BUT it survived, the others did not, GH stays and the others can mix into the show SLOWLY.

I want OLTL & AMC back
Even a 1/2 hour will be great. Keep GH on still but put
Them all link and cut some criminal story lines but keep
Maybe 1 good one going . Definitely get rid of Finn and
Franco and be Todd and John back and Stare and blare.

AMC & OLTL will never ever return..
The 2 soaps are gone forever. DEAD ..

As for bringing some of the actors in from the 2 soaps I’m ok with it.
I like new/different stuff ..

ABC is wack there not going to bring back amc and oltl how ever if that is the case don’t cancel GH but bring only the strongest characters from amc and oltl to gh like amc only bring opal/david/erica/kendell/janet oltl jessica/blair/viki/dorian

Troy Turner

I just heard the same interview that you did-and while it’s not entirely Varni’s decision, to have ANY ABC employee in power open to AMC/OLTL returning to be a net win. Do you realize that ABC has only had the shows back basically since New Years’ Day? It takes time for things to work themselves out. We as fans just need to keep showing that we want AMC/OLTL back…

only a limited amount of chatracters from the two late soaps should be brought back : maybe 2 or 3 from each soap . we don’t want amc and oltl brought back to life for the following reasons : we grieved a first time when frons got rid of them and a second time when prospect park gave up on them too , to make matters worse agnes nixon has now passed away . the 2 soaps as well as agnes nixon deserve to rest in peace . we grieved and we moved on .

I would love for either or both soaps to come back. OLTL and AMC still live within my head….
But, reality strikes!!!!!! Aria and su are right. It will never happen, albeit I will still hope and pray for that miracle.

Stranger things have happened! I’d love to see both series back and have characters cross over on all of them. That was what made ABC soaps so unique, it was all the same universe: Skye Chandler and Rae Cummings and that whole story arc. Bring Back ABC daytime with great storytelling, actors and the ratings will skyrocket, epecially with streaming and rebroadcaststing on Hulu. Even in half hour formats or rotating in mini seasons. We need a new Golden Age of Daytime Drama and ABC should be the home for it.

CTwildheart

He did an interview today on The WSE Lounge and said because they tape months in advance it would be 6-12 months before any characters would even be able appear.

He was asked about bringing these shows back even in 30 min episodes and made it very clear that even though fans wanted them back, advertisers have to also and that it’s very expensive to produce a soap and that ABC has no room in their daytime lineup even for two 30 minute soaps.

As far as I’m concerned he all but said “it’s not going to happen” and basically all we can expect is some of their characters to pop up on GH once in a while and maybe trying to get Hulu, Netflix, or Amazon Prime to air past episodes.

As I’ve said before, and today’s interview confirmed it for me, ABC has no intentions of correcting their mistake, and only plan to use characters once in a while to placate fans hoping they’ll stop boycotting.

John Gordon
John Gordon

It’s so sad to me but you are probably right, it doesn’t appear that abc-tv has much interest in doing a re-launching of either show.
What is annoying though is that ABC never even considered ‘trimming’ down the shows to a half hour or combining them – they didn’t think of experimenting with another format, they simply screamed CANCEL and that was the end of that.
When Prospect Park did attempt their on-line effort, well, the shows didn’t quite have the charm that they had had in their original ABC televised inceptions – I’m not exactly sure what the missing component was –
Well, although it is highly unlikely….we can always hope….

rebecca1
rebecca1

I agree they should have cut them down to 30 minutes (not because I didn’t enjoy the hour) but it wouldn’t have been as heartless to actors or fans to rip them off the air after decades. I would assume they thought it wouldn’t be cost effective; but who knows…maybe they didn’t even run the numbers.

As for now, I don’t think it’s ABC that doesn’t want to bring them back, I think it’s as mentioned, advertisers. They need advertising dollars to make it work. If the advertisers don’t see it as a lucrative demographic…we’re screwed.

I don’t know if i can see the shows back but just knowing there are thoughts on letting us see our old faves from the shows is very good news. I had been saying that Todd Manning and John McBain should be placed back on the canvas.

Van
Van

I love both Todd and McBain. Both of these roles are these respected actors’ claim to fame. I would love to see both Melissa Archer and Erika Slezak join GH. I have waited since 2012 for an Archer and Easton reunion. I would welcome it with these two playing any characters. They’re amazing and missed!

Katie
Katie

At this point I do not think the shows are coming back. That being said in relationship to some of the destruction of OLTL characters that occurred on GH,i.e. my beloved Jolie,, I would love to see those relationships fixed. I don’t care if Michael Easton remains Finn as long as we see Melissa Archer come on. There are a multitude of characters and options that could facilitate her presence. She could easily be a hot new doctor on GH that Finn falls for and those two could be the new Scrubs. She could be Sarah Webber, or even Finn’s wife. The stories could write themselves. That would make me immensely happy.

Would love to see Melissa on our screens as well.

They Could Have The FBI Could Assign John McBain To Port Charles. I Thought John McBain And Anna Devane Had Great Chemistry. Todd Manning Could Start A New Magazine In Port Charles. Maybe, Todd Could Take Over The Magazine That Nina Is Running. That Would Be Funny IF Nina Said What Are You Doing Here Franco And He Said My Name Is Todd Manning And I Am Your New Boss.

Iakovos

GH and Port Charles already are very full. Sometimes I am not sure who really are my core GH characters! I like idea of revival of each AMC and OLTL as half hours. But so much time has passed, and I am not sure what we would have anymore.

Tali3180
Tali3180

I’d like to see OLTL – especially John & Natalie McBain. Extend GH to 90 minutes and in twine them into GH with others in and out of their story lines from time to time. Also Todd & Blair on a regular basis. Hopefully we’ll see some OLTL characters soon.

I definitely agree Tali.

Glad that ABC has gotten back the character rights for AMC and OLTL, but don’t see how that is going to work out for those of us who were fans of them from the start . . . My late mother and I could not enjoy the programs as Prospect Park produced them and I can’t imagine that beloved characters from AMC and OLTL would have the availability of most of the original stars . . . Can’t imagine any of the originals that we love would fit in with the direction currently of GH . . . The John-Todd-Star issues would blow this out of the water, too (especially Michael Easton’s “metamorphosis” on GH to date). Fear “we’ve missed the bus” on any possible AMC + OLTL = GH plus mega-reunion. I’ve been mourning AMC and OLTL for ages and I, for one, don’t have another “recovery” left in me. I think “love in the afternoon” on ABC has gone the way of our dear Agnes Nixon, Fans. . .

Jimmy
Jimmy

John McBain was an interesting character on OLTL but for me he never really clicked on GH, mainly because of his reasoning for leaving Natalie to take a job. If they brought back John, Melissa Archer would have to come on as Natalie too in order for this story to work based on their character developments. However, I like Finn. I think Finn has way more potential than Silas did because when he was first introduced, he was given a story of his own and has slowly begun to find a love interest in Hayden, while Silas was thrown into the mix randomly and put with Sam until Jason returned, essentially as a placeholder. So I wouldn’t want them getting rid of Finn for John.

As for Franco, I’ve only started warming up to this character recently, until the whole Tom Baker fiasco began. What an atrocious and insensitive storyline. It made me really start to dislike Franco again, and stained the growing relationship between him and Elizabeth. The story should have been focused on her, but instead it morphed into a story about showing Franco’s redemption and love for Elizabeth in a skewed, twisted way. A dog cage and shock collar? Horrible. I wouldn’t mind for Franco to be killed off or shipped away if it meant Todd could come back. Maybe then we could get Blair too.

Rhonda
Rhonda

Well said, Jimmy. I agree with your every word. I also am finding the destruction of Alexis to be somewhat misogynistic in tone.
With Lizzy being rescued by a rapist (Franco) from her rapist and Alexis being saved by a man who tried to kill her (Julian) it’s hard to believe GH is being written by two female head writers.

I want OLTL back so bad. AMC was the first soap I ever watched but I lost interest in it but OLTL I had watched for over 20 years. I feel OLTL was wrongfully canceled at the time it was taken off as I think it was doing the best of the three soaps. I miss all of the characters so much and as much as I would love a reboot it would only truly work for me if they got a lot of the core people back and not recasts but the original actors. I would start watching GH again (they lost me during the whole dragged out Jason not knowing he’s Jason storyline) depending who from OLTL they brought back. Seeing Todd, Blair, Starr, John McBain, Vicky, Dorian, and Jessica would be awesome!

Llanviewer717
Llanviewer717

I know just how you feel DAR. There was a time when I watched all 3 shows. I stopped watching AMC decades ago and dropped GH in 2005 because I was sick of mob stories. But, I watched OLTL from the first episode through the entire network run and the online reboot.

please give OLTL a hal hour time slot and see what it does over a period of time. even a small cast would work…but yes, i am certain it would work…. vicki, clint, dorean, david, blair, jessica, natalie….they are all you need to get the show up and running,,,,,

Llanviewer717
Llanviewer717

I do not trust the executives of the alphabet network/mouse company. But, since they do own the rights to all the characters and stories, OLTL and AMC characters could be integrated into GH. It would have to be done carefully while maintaining respect for those characters and their histories. If done properly, GH may experience an increase in viewers.

I don’t trust these people. I won’t be sitting by my television waiting for it to happen.

Scott (ATWT Fan)

For me, the only two characters from One Life to Live I would definitely want to see come back to the General Hospital canvas are Starr and Todd Manning. The other characters can remain off-canvas. As for All My Children, I would’ve liked to see Greenlee come to town, but with Rebecca Budig as Hayden, that does not make sense any longer. Maybe Cara Castillo could come in as a new nurse at General Hospital?

Richard
Richard

YES. BRING ON GREENLEE!!

Rodd

It’s nice to get a direct response from someone involved in the discussions. I do hope they do something with the characters from these shows. But my ultimate hope it that they would bring back the shows. And once that’s done, we, as the fans, MUST watch them or there won’t be a third of fourth chance for our soaps. We have to do our part through thick and thin to keep our soaps alive.

Reed
Reed

Couldn’t agree more, audience erosion for our beloved soaps predated the myriad of programming/entertainment choices and platforms for viewing and delivery that we have today, so I’m not sure the model works any longer…or maybe it does and it just needs to be reinvigorated for today’s binge watching-ADHD-instant gratification attention spans? While our choices for entertainment have never been greater, it’s a genre that is tried and true and engenders fierce loyalty, not to mention a substantial (time) commitment from its viewers, one that we make gladly, if not religiously, thanks to technology! That is not to minimize the considerable cost to produce these shows, but these are brands, franchises, and corporate assets, and they need to be nurtured just like any product throughout its life cycle, and where there’s value, it’s not something that is given up on lightly. I’m sure the decisions to move on from these beloved programs and their rich history, in favor of lower cost talk and reality fare, were not easy ones to make at the time, and to their credit, at its height, there was no greater champion of the medium than ABC. So, as viewers, let’s do our part to retain those that are still on the air and let’s hope that someday network executives will decide “what is old can be new again” and we’ll see them reprise one or both of these venerable shows. Soaps are an enduring and endearing format and still deserve a place to be viewed–they’re not the disposable, interchangeable, place-holder stuff that is so much of what we see today. In this day and age of reboots and fondness for nostalgia, how about you as network programming executives double down and return from the mothballs one of these treasures and let’s see what the response is!

John Gordon

What an intelligent and insightful comment – it would be wonderful if ABC would admit that these shows have an audience still – they never even experimented with different models of the shows (for example, as shortened or combined presentations) and they left many fans adrift.

You NEVER know – rumors are floating that Days of Our Lives may not continue – and I guess not everyone will agree but to me ONE LIFE TO LIVE and All My Children were superior to DOOL – I thought Dr. David Hayward was interesting as played by Vincent but on Days, meh, it doesn’t do much for me – the actors are fine, it’s the writing that is lackluster.

Trophy Lady

Since GH currently has NO VISION, nor do they have ANY central focus, I would absolutely welcome so many of the AMC and OLTL staple characters. If I can’t have the shows come back on their own, why not integrate the characters on to GH? GH doesn’t have anyone like Erica Kane. They don’t have anyone like Viki Davidson. They don’t have Kendall Hart Slater. They don’t have Zach Slater. They certainly don’t have Dorian Lord! There’s no Bo Buchanan, Nora, or Antonio. And quite honestly, even though this show has Michael Easton, they NEED John McBain! So ideally, I’d love to have my old shows back. I’d actually even welcome them merging both shows into one! But if they won’t do that, please save GH by bringing in the DEFINED characters of Llanview and Pine Valley. They are so needed in Port Charles because at the moment, and for the past bit, GH has been a steadily sinking ship.

Scott (ATWT Fan)
Scott (ATWT Fan)

Timmm, while I do see it from your point, at the same time, it comes down to legalities, and CBS couldn’t comment, likely due to Muhney’s legal deal with the soap. Same with this situation; it’s all about rights and legalities.

He admitted he was let go because of his attitude behind the scenes, and his attitude towards the daytime community, and that he saw it coming long before it happened. HAD there been sexual misconduct (etc.), they wouldn’t have allowed him to stay and complete a storyline. He would have been suspended, without pay and ultimately fired.

John Gordon
John Gordon

I would love to see a re-launching of either All My Children or One Life to Live, and don’t see why the passing of time would make a difference to long-time fans as long as everyone is ready to accept new faces intermiggled with existing characters. I actually think they should do a combination of the Two shows and call it Landview (or Pine Valley, or whatever) but I’ve been saying that since 2013 and I know I sound like a broken record.
If they could just do a half hour combination show I think that fans would be satisfied.

It would be nice to see some AMC and OLTL characters come back or be introduced on GH. However, most GH fans have gotten used to certain actors (Michael Easton and Roger Howarth) as certain characters and I’m not sure we as fans can take another switch.

Max Daddee

Really happy to hear ABC is having discussion about OLTL and AMC. As far as bringing some characters onto GH – there are already too many iconic characters that get too few lines. Mac Scorpio, Felicia had run for mayor, corruption kept her out. So now and then we see a loudmouth, corrupt mayor get some lines. The Quartermain’s haven’t been a power family for years, so PC really lacks one. Bring on Erika Slezak and some Buchanans as permanent characters on GH. Otherwise, show the actors, characters and these other soaps some dignitiy and put them back on the air.

Andrea
Andrea

I was also devastated when OLTL and AMC went off the air. I think bringing them both back a 1/2 hr each (as a trial run) is a good idea. Then maybe put the show that has better ratings and make that one a full hr and move characters from the other onto GH. I’d love to see all the characters from OLTL that people mentioned

The thing that made OLTL the best soap was the characters. It was kind of like being with family. I think back and in my fictional decision to choose Bo or Rex, I’m like, why choose, I can have them both!! I never quite liked the Jason and Spinelli mob show quite as much, although it has much improved. Familiar characters welcome, but bring back OLTL. PP proved it can be done on a shoe string budget. It would be fun to find out that Hope and Cole Thornheart are alive and well after all.

The writers “killed off” AMC and OLL long before cancelled. Both became overly violent and “silly” with storylines like Todd isn’
Todd he’s Victor because we can bring back the original actor, and his mommy kidnapped him…. and Rex is Clint’s son – and Clint gets a heart from a fake look a like of Gigi… who is her sister???? And don’t forget, David keeping Dead people alive??????? It was time to end….

I don’t mind characters being integrated into GH but I’ve always believed both could have a viable return to television as each 30 min shows like they once were and see what happens from there. The Chew has proven to be a mainstay but that doesn’t mean the shows couldn’t squeeze in before GH or right after. Leave The View where it is and move The Chew in right before it. I’d really love to see ATWT and GL do the same on CBS. I work nearly 45-50 hours a week and that’s not including inside the home but, I STILL find time for GH and miss the ABC line up and the other CBS soaps and would love to have them back in the mix.

clb
clb

The ABC Executive’s comments are not very promising. But I would cancel The View and change the name to The Political Crap and send it to CNN. Move The Chew to The View’s old spot which opens 1 hour (for a 1/2 hour AMC and a 1/2 hour OLTL). Keep GH on the canvas or it can get hot for ABC Execs. CBS should move Let’s Make A Deal before Price is Right to keep game shows together. Cancel The Talk (more political garbage to showcase Les’ wife) and move DOOL there (CBS now owns it) and follow with 1/2 hour turns for ATWT and GL (whose reunions on the Talk were a short disrespectful mess in return for the great years given to CBS).

Congrats to ABC for getting the “character rights” back for AMC & OLTL. however it would be nice for some of the characters from the aforementioned soaps appear on GH but how about reviving one of them. In my opinion
It’s not the same if they were on GH
They are 3 totally different soap opera and have different stories
Hence yes they did bring OLTL characters on GH but it did look or seem the same.

I would love to see some of the Actors and or Characters used on GH, but it must make sense . General Hospital has a Hospital , Police Department, ELQ, The Corinthos Warehouse,, The Court House , Metro Court Restaurant/Hotel and The Haunted Star , as Main Back Drops. I would Love to see more Doctors and Nurses used. GH has always been a Grittier show and I want to see that continued. I love Finn and Hayden so I don’t want to see GreenLee Smyth on GH. But , I can see Michael Easton playing a Dual Role as John McBain coming to help Anna or Jessie from AMC being a part of the PCPD. I really want Starr and Todd back and bringing Sam with them. Also finish the Starr , Cole and Hope storyline. I have a feeling they are not dead. Can you see Emma and Sam being Friends? Since Joss has been aged to 14 and she is suppose to be younger than Emma , Cam and Spencer must be SORAS to at least 16. GH needs young people. We need Lucky back. I say recast him . There is great potential in using these people before Y&R picks them up. As for AMC and OLTL returning, I would love another 30 minute Soap like GH Night Shift or Port Charles or call it Ultra Violet ooh GH really needs a real Dance Club. I loved when they did the Metro Court Disaster done like 24 , that was so cool. I agree, whomever they use needs to be strong. GH needs the boost. I love this show and would like for it to remain for many years down the road.

If Netflix or any other provider is ocnsidering a reboot of AMC or OLTL why not bring us the best of both worlds. Combine the shows into one, the towns were close together. Bring the best of both shows to the forefront and bring back Love in the Afternoon

I believe that they should use the characters from amc and oltl on gh then give them a story to tell on their own shows

Eva LaRue Talks On Her Daytime Emmy Nomination, And Opens Up About The Loss Of John Callahan

For Eva LaRue, the past two months have been some of the most emotionally gut-wrenching and challenging of her life, following the passing of her ex-husband, father of her child, and dearest friend, John Callahan (Ex-Edmund, All My Children). The outpouring of support she has received not only from her former AMC cast mates, but the soap world in general illustrates just how dear Eva is to all of us, and how many people had special memories of their time with John.

While mourning the loss of Callahan along with their daughter, Kaya, there was some heartwarming and re-affirming news that any actress would love to hear. Eva was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in the Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series for her work as Celeste Rosales on CBS’ The Young and the Restless, and she is great company as her former AMC co-star Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad) is also nominated along with her for his work on General Hospital.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit our country and world hard, but through it All My Children virtual reunions emerged as fans were engaged by the content, transported to happier times that brought them back to familiar faces in Pine Valley in which Eva participated along with her good friends, Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos and so many more, thanks to the EW. com weeklong event which concluded on Friday.

Michael Fairman TV talked with Eva in this very candid, at times heartbreaking, and open conversation where she shares details into the final days of her beloved John, her last moments with him, and how she tried to plan a memorial in his honor during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For so many of us, 2020 has certainly seen more lows then highs, but in the end for Eva, to receive a nomination now (an award she was last nominated for back in 1997 as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work as Dr Maria Santos on All My Children) couldn’t have come at a better time. Here now is our conversation with Eva.

I’ve been thinking so much about you.  I’m glad we could do this, and in the midst of the tragedy of losing John Callahan, and then receiving a Daytime Emmy nomination.  What was your reaction when you learned you were nominated in a category with none other than your former AMC castmate and good friend, Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad, AMC, now Martin, GH)?

EVA:  Oh, I know!  He’s the first person I texted!  I was like, “Congratulations, Michael!  Did you ever in a million years think that you and I would be in the same category of anything?”  Then I said, “And when you win this, can I just borrow it for the weekend just to dress it up and take pictures with it… just want to borrow it, just babysit the trophy for a weekend, please?” (Laughs)

What did you end up submitting that landed you the nomination for your role as Celeste on Y&R?

EVA: I submitted a scene with Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R), who I have been friends for 30 years, if not more, and in all that time we had never worked together.  I met him when I was married to John O’Hurley (Ex- Dr. James Grainger) because John was over at The Young and the Restless at the time.  I went to a Christmas party with John to Peter and Mariellen’s house, and do you know who else was there?  Lisa Rinna (Ex-Billie, Days), and it was before she had gotten Days of Our Lives. She was dating Peter Barton (Ex-Scott Grainger, Y&R) at the time. We both ended up on soaps at the same time.  So, I submitted a scene with Peter, who is amazing, warm and open and such a great actor. Then I submitted a scene with my on-screen daughter Sasha Calle (Lola, Y&R) – I love that girl, and another one with Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R) who has also been my great friend for a couple of decades. The other scene I put on my reel was with me and Jordi Vilasuso (Rey, Y&R) who I also adore.  He is awesome and such a sweetheart.  I only had two months worth of material to draw upon.  So, I just submitted the scenes that I liked the best, and they all were within story, and all made sense.

Where is Celeste supposed to be now?

EVA:  She went back to Florida, and that was that. I would never say never to anything, but it was always supposed to be a short stint, and it was great.

So not only is it you and Michael E. Knight, but Jeffery Vincent Parise, Chrishell Stause, and Elissa Kapneck. This Guest Performer category is loaded!

EVA:  I know! I know and love, Chrishell (Ex-Amanda) because we worked together on All My Children, too, right before I left, and she is a doll.  She just might be the sweetest, kindest, girl on the planet.  She literally might be the sweetest person who ever lived!  I don’t know the other two nominees personally.  So, I’m excited for them too.  It’s such a diverse category.  It’s just really fun to be nominated with all of them.

You were nominated before, though, for your work as Maria on All My Chldren during the emotional baby switch storyline; working opposite Susan Lucci (Ex-Erica) for a lot in it.

EVA:  Yes.  I was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for All My Children, and I was nominated for Best Original Song.  I wrote a song when Maria came ‘back from the dead’ to All My Children, with a producer friend of mine from Miami Sound Machine.

So, you’ve been doing all of these All My Children virtual reunions, which is so interesting that in this pandemic, people are looking for content, and they dip back into these beloved shows.  Was it fun doing the EW.com Santos Family reunion with everybody?

EVA:  Oh yeah, it was really, really fun.  I only saw in the big picture everybody else’s photo who was a part of it, and the people who I actually do hang out with the most, and see the most, and talk to the most, are Kelly Ripa (Ex-Hayley), Mark Consuelos (Ex-Mateo), and Sydney Penny (Ex-Julia).  I don’t see Sydney as much, but I do see her probably once every two years at least, but Sarah Michelle Geller (ExKendall) I see all the time and talk to all the time.  Kelly, Mark, and Sarah are the ones who walked me through that first week when John Callahan passed.  They literally were on the phone with me, the three of them, almost every day, but I got beautiful outreach, from what seemed like everyone.  This is when no matter how many years have passed since you have been in daytime, that the daytime family as a group – there used to be fifteen shows, now there are four – and people have bounced around and they are on other shows- – but the entire soap opera community reached out,   I cannot even tell you how much that meant to me.  It was overwhelming, and it was really, spectacularly beautiful.

I hope it was some solace to you knowing how much people loved John, and also that they love and care so deeply for you.

EVA:  I mean, people who did not even work with John reached out.  Every soap was represented by getting a hold of me, sending a text or a phone call, or if they didn’t have my personal information, they tweeted, or whatever it was… literally from every reach of soapdom.  It was amazing.

And your relationship with John was amazing with all of the ups and downs you went through; that you remained such dear friends.

EVA:  We remained really great friends all the way.

I so remember when the two of you first got together and it was this storybook real life soap couple romance.  John was always so sweet to me.  I was so, so sad, and you know, my heart just broke for you.

EVA:  I think it was just such a shock.  I don’t think anybody, and even Kaya were talking about it, because she graduated this week, and her dad is not here.  We’re not having a graduation, because of COVID-19, which sucks on top of it, but we were just kind of talking through the feelings of it.  She said, “You know what’s weird?  I guess I never pictured dad getting old, and I always wondered why, and now I know.”  When I would get on John about his heart or his health, he used to always say, ‘Oh, don’t worry Evala, (he always called me “Evala”).  I’m going to be here.  I’m going to be here a long time.  I’m fine.  I’m going to be here to walk Kaya down the aisle and see her kids and all that.  Stop worrying,” Every time he said it to me, something in my gut said, “I don’t think he is.  I don’t think he is,” but I always just dismissed that.  But never in my wildest dreams did I think John wouldn’t make it to her high school graduation.  He was only 66.

Photo: JPI

I had heard you ended up running to Palm Springs to be near John.  I can’t even imagine what that must have been like.

EVA:  The only good thing about this pandemic is that we had been shut down for only two weeks at that point.  Kaya and I got in the car.  John had some heart procedures the day before, on a Thursday.  I called him in the morning before he went in for the procedure.  I said, “Call me as soon as you get out of there.  Call me as soon as you come-to again, and you’re good,” and he said, “Okay, I will.”  I said, “I’m going to send Kaya out to you on Friday for the weekend, just so you have somebody to hang out and watch you, and I might come out too,” And then, I said, “Maybe, I’ll come down too in case you are feeling weak, just to watch out for you for the weekend.”   So, he called me after the procedure.   I said, “I cannot believe they sent you home! You just had some major heart stuff done.”  He said, “Oh no, they said I’m fine.  It was just run-of-the-mill heart stuff, angiogram…”  I was like, “Are you sure?”  He said, “Yeah, I’m fine.  I’m just tired.  I’m going to go to sleep.”  I said, “Do you want me to send Kaya out tonight?” and he was like, “No, no, no.  Send her tomorrow.”  So, in the morning, I called him at 9:00am.  No answer.  I texted him.  He always texted me like Johnny on the spot, and then texts me immediately back.  So, I call him again at 10.  Nothing.  His best friend calls me about a half-hour later, “Hey, I talked to John at about 8:00 this morning.  He said he was feeling really, really shitty and was going to go back to the hospital, and then, I texted him again at like 8:30 to just tell him something, and he hasn’t texted me back, and he always texts me immediately back.”  I said, “Oh my, God, I’ve been trying to get a hold of him for two hours; he hasn’t texted me back,”   I said, “You know what, I’ll call you back.”  So, I called his friend who lives down the street from John, and I said, “Go to his house, please right this second, knock on the door, jump the fence, knock on his bedroom, he might be asleep, I don’t know.”  So, he gets there, nobody is answering.  I said, “Break into the house please.  So, he did, and John was collapsed in the bathroom.  They called the paramedics, and as soon as they called me back and said, “John is unresponsive in the bathroom,” Kaya and I threw everything in the car, and what usually takes us two and a half hours without traffic, we made it down there from Los Angeles in an hour and forty-five minutes.

Photo: JPI

I don’t know how you made it down there in one piece. Thank, God!

EVA:  I drove so fast, like literally broke all land speed records and thank God because we got there just in time.  He was in emergency.  He hadn’t been put up in ICU yet, where we wouldn’t have been able to see him.  They weren’t going to let us in the hospital.  Thank God the person answering the door was an All My Children fan.  She was the one saying, “Sorry, no one is allowed in the hospital, no one can come in,” and I was like, “No, no, no, my ex-husband just came in.”  She said, “Was it Edmund?” and I said, “Yes, it was Edmund!”  She said, “Okay, follow me.”  Thank God for All My Children.  Thank God.  So, we followed this woman secretly, and we get to spend a half-hour with him in Emergency.  He was already on life-support, totally unresponsive, but we got to play John his favorite music, we got to just sit there and hold his hand and talk to him, and tell him how much we loved him.  Sarah Michelle Gellar called right when we were in the hospital in Emergency, and she said, “Put the phone by his ear,” so I put the phone by his ear, and she talked to John too, and she told him how much she loved him.  She used to always call him “GP”, which was short of grandpa, because she came on the show when she was 15, and she didn’t have a dad, and John acted like a dad to her – but she used to always call him “grandpa”, and he hated “grandpa”, so he was like, “You can call me “GP”, but not grandpa,” so she always called him GP.  I just put the phone by John’s ear, and what was crazy is that when she talked to him, his feet started twitching.  He started moving his feet.  Then, when Kaya was talking to him about Yankee season, he started moving his feet.  We were kind of hopeful that something was changing for the better.  We had about a half-hour with him, and then, they took him up to ICU, and then, we knew we couldn’t see him again.  They called us later that night that he had passed.

I am just so thankful that you got to see John one last time.

EVA:  I thank God every day that we got to say goodbye, because if we hadn’t gotten there in time to say goodbye, I just don’t know.

It’s very rare that a couple after a divorce, who have a child, and went from romance to dear friends, end up maintaining that relationship so many years later in their lives.  I know so many people who were together at one point in their lives, for years, and they don’t even talk to each other now.

EVA:  Well, you know, like any divorce, the first four years afterwards were super contentious but then, by year five, we kind of had this major breakthrough, and from then on, he was one of my closest friends, and one of the things we always kept alive for each other was we loved to  dance together. We fell in love, I think, dancing because originally our characters on AMC met at this country-western bar, and we had to take country line dancing lessons on the show.  They hired a choreographer for us so that during those scenes where we were falling in love, we would actually be able to do a two-step! So, we went out and practiced at Denim and Diamonds, which was a big country-western place in New York City at the time.  We used to go out with a whole group of us.  It was me, and Teresa Blake (Ex-Gloria) and Kelly Ripa, and her boyfriend at the time, Winsor Harmon (Ex-Del), sometimes Walt Willey (Ex-Jack); we just had a whole crew of us who would go out country dancing.  John and I also loved singing together.  He had the most amazing gravely kind of rockstar voice, but his real talent was harmonizing.  He could harmonize to anything.  So, when he would come over, we would sit in the kitchen and sing, and sing, and sing until the late hours because that’s what we loved to do, and that’s what he loved to do.  That’s one of my favorite last memories of us.  He was just over the month before, and Kaya’s bedroom is near the kitchen, so she came out and was like, “Can you two shut up?”  It was like two in the morning and we were still singing in the kitchen. (Laughs)  John was my dear friend and my confidant.

Were you able to have some kind of service during this stay-at-home pandemic we are all dealing with, in order to mourn the loss of John?

EVA:  It’s been so crazy.  We couldn’t even have a funeral.  That’s what made it all the more heartbreaking.  There were less than twenty of us, and we just got on a Zoom call and memorialized John.   I thought we were going to do a big Zoom memorial, but it seemed so overwhelming and so impersonal, it just was rubbing us wrong in every way.  Every way we were looking at it, we were like, “Oh my, God, we just can’t.”  We wanted to invite everybody he had ever worked with, and we were like, “No, we want to do that when everything can open back up again, and invite every person, and have a party” because John was always the life of every party.  Maybe we can do that in the fall or next year.  I kept trying to write something for the small memorial we did do for three days.  I kept coming back to this one song, because John was always the consummate bartender, too.  I sang a song that Bette Midler sang on the very last episode of Johnny Carson.  It was “One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)” and it’s about a bartender who has got a big personality and a lot to say.   I changed some of the words around a bit just to reflect who John was, and so, I ended up singing for it instead of speaking.  We always talked about that last episode of Carson; how stunningly emotional it was when Bette sang that song to kind of sing Johnny off for of all of his years on the air.  So, that’s what I did and because we loved to sing together, it just made sense.

Photo: HutchinsPhoto

I do think you touched upon something, earlier, too.  I don’t think any other genre would have that kind of unbridled camaraderie.  It’s such a family, like you said.  I don’t think you would find that quite like this; certainly in show business.

EVA:  I really don’t think you can. Even though there is always a good amount of competition in the soaps as well; between the soaps it’s like they are any sports team, but there is always a level of respect, love, and familial connection within the community.  I think that is why they have stood the test of time.  I really do think that is what hooks our audience, that is what keeps them there after all of these years, even though unfortunately the genre is antiquated looking, there is something about it that is nostalgic, familial, and comfortable for people.

Photo: JPI

Every time I talk about All My Children, why do you think everybody go ga-ga for it, when it’s been off the air for several years now?

EVA:  It speaks to people’s childhoods.  It speaks to how we grew up.  You can’t undo nostalgia.  You can’t.  It’s in the way we grew up, the things we loved, the things that we scheduled our lives around, the people we fell in love with on the shows that we watched, who we cared about and loved their storylines. I grew up watching All My Children, General Hospital, and Days of Our Lives.

It must have been a spectacular moment for you when you realized you were actually in Pine Valley and a member of the cast of All My Children then?

EVA:  It was amazing.  I was a fan when I got the show.  I was a straight up fan.  I fangirled walking through that dressing room hallway for the first time! I was trying to keep it in check, but you know … (Laughs)

Photo: JPI

So, in closing, you would say, “Thrilled to be nominated”?

EVA:  Yes.  So fun.  It has really been a rollercoaster of a couple of months here.  That nomination was literally the bright, shining spot in all of this.
