ABC Renews General Hospital For 2014-2015 Season!

While historically ABC does not officially renew its soap with an announcement, according to Deadline.com, General Hospital has gotten pick-up for the 2014-2015 season.

This comes as no surprise, with the daytime drama completing its 50th anniversary season and great ratings to support its efforts, where almost a few years ago there was talk the show could be cancelled.  With GH being renewed, and the official announcements by NBC and CBS that Days of our Lives, The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless all will continue, that means that all network soaps are intact, which is a wonderful sign for the genre, coming off years of seeing one soap after the other being cancelled.

Deadline also noted:  “All four soaps are in positive territory year-to-year. Leader The Young & The Restless (5.2 million viewers season to date, 1.5 in Women 18-49) is up 9% in total viewers and 7% in the female demo as it marks its 25th season as the most watched daytime drama. The Bold & The Beautiful (3.9 million, 1.1) is up 14% in viewers and even in W19-49. General Hospital (3.3 million, 1.4) is up 8% and 17%, respectively, as it closes in on Y&R in the demo, and Days Of Our Lives (2.4, 1.1) is up 10% in both categories. Days  is delivering its best season in W18-49 in 3 years and biggest season in total viewers in 4 years. General Hospital is pacing for its best season in 7 years in total viewers and is on track to post  a 3-year high in W18-49. During the most recent week of available data, the Jan. 7 episode of GH ranked as the series’ most-watched telecast in over 6 years.”

So excited to know more General Hospital is on the way?    What do you think about all four soaps getting support from their respective networks and all getting renewal pick-ups?  Let us know!

Loved the turn around for GH and DAYS, I would love to see a more culturally diverse cast on both shows. Bring back Lexi on Days, and Tom Hardy III on GH . I would love for BB to rid itself of the incest, and Y&R to move faster in it’s storylines and improve the acting on both Y&R and BB-Kudos to Thorsten and Heather for their efforts, but sadly they are the only ones on that show who are acting. Y&R-I’m no longer watching that mess so I look forward to the rating slipping after Michael Muhney’s last air date. Y&R is the most boring soap there is -and killing off children so soon after losing our Duchess is in poor taste and the acting of the majority aside from Michael Muhney is horrendous-Nikki, Avery, Dylan, Nick, Summer, Christine-the most useless character, Noah, Cane,Victor, Lily to name a few. Y&R should have never got rid of Stephen as Tucker.

And some said it would be cancelled this year…glad they were wrong!!! lol

Who cares ? Too much mobs and molls for me. ? Now even the hospital will be run by the evil kidnapper SDR O. She tortured Robin etc etc,etc sorry everyday it gets worse. I don’t want to see it cancelled even if I stop watching. I don’t want to see actors etc lose their jobs I just want to see some creative writing something I haven’t already watched on this soap before. a show with the characters I like given some on screen time and actors who can actually act. I have to put on the CC lots of time because the mumbling is horrific. The whining that is suppose to be crying and the insulting to the intelligence of the viewers about exactly what is going on.

Great news!!! While I am an ABC soap fan and love GH (and still miss AMC and OLTL), I am very happy that all of the remaining soaps have all been renewed. Our beloved genre is not going down, soap fans (for the most part) are a very loyal breed!!! Keep watching the soaps you love!!!!

Happy news! ABC would have been fools to cancel GH. What? ABC fools? Stupid cancellations? Nah, never….They got it right this time! Thank you ABC/D.

BIG CONGRATS to all involved in the show and the fans. Vive le GH!

GH is a joy to watch! I love the characters/actors, storylines, writing , just everything about it. I hope it continually renews!!! Wouldn’t it be something to see it celebrate it’s 75th anniversary? I’d be cheering from my wheelchair or walker by then. :0)

Now if only ABC would bring back OLTL!

Totally agree. I would even take having OLTL and AMC share an hour time slot.

If the Execs at ABC would only wise up they would bring back ALL MY CHILDREN and/or One Life to Live as a lead-in to Gen Hospital – contingent of course on if they get the rights back. Sorry to say though it seems unlikely it will happen, then again – who knows.

I don’t think it’s going to happen either. ABC wants nothing to do with AMC and OLTL. The only reason ABC wants the soaps back is to break all ties with Prospect Park. Nothing more. It certainly isn’t to put them back on the air.

The only hope for AMC and OLTL to return again is through Prospect Park. But that seems so unlikely to happen that Michael may as well put back the RIP sign next to their names.

Love GH… so happy
All actors doing wonderful jobs
Even the ones we hate…they are good

Well this is good news bad news for me. It is good news that the show has been renewed, as well as the other remaining three. But it means the death of character driven stories. All the shows on the air are slowly but surely changing the type of stories they used to tell, to ones that do not happen to people in real life.
It is fun to watch, the camp, the way out there stories of evil villains trying to take over the world, or drugging priests to make a sex tape or dead coming back to life, over and over. Yet, at the end of day, I miss a good tearjerker story, or an old fashion epic romance, or the triumph of the human spirit over obstacles– the guts and glory of real drama, peppered with wit and humor. And sadly, as good as soaps are today, they pale in comparison to what they used to be, and if these wacky stories are the wave of the future, then I will enjoy them, but I will missed what genre used to be.

Couldnt agree more. At least DAYS still takes time to play moments of real human emotion. Moments that are not there to advance the plot, but are just real, and there to show us who the characters are. Sadly, on GH, there is no more real human emotion. Every sentence…every word that is uttered is a device used to jump from plot point to plot point. It becomes really distracting…instead of the desired effect of reeling the viewer in. GH is completely plot driven…bending and changing characters at will to fit into whatever the story du jour is. And how frickin gross was the Lucas and Brad scene????

Awesome, best show on television!

silly question, but the 2014-2015 season…when exactly does a season begin and end these days?

Finally great news, gh got renewed. but only 1 year? It should have got renewed, for 2 or 3 years. But I’m still happy, that gh is still on air for now.

I AM WITH YOU I AM A BIG GH FAN:)

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

Published

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.
