Amazon Freevee To Bring Back Iconic Australian Soap ‘Neighbours’ with All-New Episodes

Photo: Freemantle

In an absolutely stunning twist, the beloved Australian soap opera Neighbours which was canceled after 37 years and aired its final episode in late July after nearly 9,000 episodes, is coming back!

Amazon Freevee and the show’s producer, Fremantle have revealed that they are set to revitalize the soap opera and it will premiere exclusively, and for free, on the streamer in the UK and U.S.

In addition, this will include streaming rights to thousands of episodes from the previous seasons, which will be available to view prior to the launch of the new season.  Neighbours will also be available via Prime Video; in Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, word is that new episodes will begin shooting in Australia next year.  Cast already signed-on include: Stefan Dennis, Alan Fletcher, Ryan Moloney and Jackie Woodburne who return to reprise their leading roles.

In a way, this news is a bit reminiscent of Prospect Park’s online save of All My Children and One Life to Live, when the company originally had hoped to move the soaps immediately and seamlessly following their network TV broadcast ending, to their new online home, only to run into pitfalls to eventually launch a year later.

Back in March, Neighbours ran into funding issues, when its key UK broadcast partner, Channel 5 pulled out and their attempts at finding alternative funding never panned out.

In a statement, Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD original content and programming at Amazon Studios, expressed: “Neighbours has captivated its audience for nearly 40 years, building a dedicated and loyal following for the lives and stories of the characters on Ramsay Street. With the power of streaming, we’re able to offer a catalog of thousands of Neighbours episodes for new audiences to discover this legendary series and current fans to relive their favorite moments. We look forward to immersing the audience in new Ramsay Street experiences when we relaunch the show next year for Amazon Freevee and Prime Video customers.”

Jennifer Mullin, global CEO, Fremantle added: “Neighbours is a unique series with a powerful connection with its fans across the world. We cherish the show and all those who have been part of its incredible story over many decades, so we are thrilled that we have found a new home with Amazon Freevee. Thanks to the innovative Amazon Freevee platform, many classic episodes will be available to fans, and Neighbours will go back into full production in Australia early next year, providing our fans with new episodes. This partnership with Amazon Freevee marks an exciting new chapter, and we look forward to collaborating with them, along with our long-term and valued partner in Australia, Network 10.”

Previously, Neighbours ended its 37-year run with a memorable final episode where many of its most well-known stars returned to make an appearance including:  Margot Robbie, Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce.  The episode scored the soaps highest ratings since 2019.

You can watch a teaser for Neighbours in their upcoming new home below, and a social media teaser from the series itself.

This is amazing news!!! Neighbours‘ loss was felt, even as an American, and I am so happy that we are going to be getting it here, too! It’s just a shame we got the [then] series finale, because it did feel like the perfect way to conclude a soap opera. But this is fantastic news, and cannot wait for the next generation of stories told!

I do know the cast were not told ahead of time… so I can only imagine how negotiations are going to go right now. Wishing them all nothing but the best of luck!

Congratulations to them. The very best of luck. I hope this works out better than Prospect Park’s All My Children and One Life to Live did for us.

The problem with Prospect Park was the timing. I think DAYS is doing just fine on Peacock. I would love to see more original soaps pop up in the streaming world as well. Perhaps a reboot or two of some older shows GL comes to mind.

Hollywood Reacts to the Death of Former ‘Cheers’ Star Kirstie Alley

Over the last 24 hours, friends, colleagues and former co-star have paid tribute to Kirstie Alley, the former Cheers and Veronica Closet star, who passed away at age 71.

On Tuesday, a rep for Kirstie Alley confirmed to PEOPLE.com that the actress died from complications from Colon Cancer.

Alley rose to fame in 1987 as Rebecca Howe on NBC’s Cheers. For that tole she earned a Golden Globe for Best Actress and an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy series in1991. In 1994, she received her second Emmy win for her portrayal of Sally Goodson in David’s Mother.

Some of her other roles included: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), Summer School (1987), Look Who’s Talking (1989), It Takes Two (1995) and Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999).

Alley also starred on in other TV sitcoms such as: Veronica’s ClosetFat ActressKirstie and Scream Queens.  She later appeared on two reality series: A&E’s Kirstie Alley’s Big Life and was a celebrity competitor on season 12 of Dancing with the Stars.

Alley’s children, True and Lillie broke the news of their mother’s death via an Instagram post: “To all our friends, far and wide around the world. We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered. She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead. As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother. We are grateful to the incredible team of doctors and nurses at the Moffitt Cancer Center for their care. Our mother’s zest and passion for life, her children, grandchildren and her many animals, not to mention her eternal joy of creating, were unparalleled and leave us inspired to live life to the fullest just as she did. We thank you for your love and prayers and ask that you respect our privacy at this difficult time.”

Kirstie’s controversial relationship with Scientology had been much talked about in the press and through her years in Hollywood.  The late actress shared in the past that through Scientology, it gave her the strength to climb out of her drug addiction and depression. In her 2012 memoir, The Art of Men, she noted that she stumbled upon Scientology at a very dark period in her life; that for 26 days, she drove from Kansas to Newport Beach, California, to visit a Scientology center, stopping periodically along the way to buy drugs.  After, she said Scientology helped her kicked her addition, Kirstie then became a devotee and spent decades publicly defending the church and building friendships within it, but later in life, she found some of those relationships fracture such as with Leah Ramini.

Below are some remembrances from stars from daytime, primetime, and motion pictures that offered up their sentiments on Alley’s sudden passing:

Greg Vaughan (Eric, DAYS): “I am beyond thankful to have had the pleasure to embrace your love, laughter & kindness!!! All my love & prayers”

Finola Hughes (Anna, GH): “#rip #kirstialley one of a kind”

Maksim Chmerkovskiy (DWTS) “My dearest Kirstie, We haven’t spoken lately and I’ll tell you everything when I finally see you, but for now I want to say that I love you very much and I wish you the most peaceful rest. You were one of the most unique people I have ever met and easily one of the brightest moments of my personal and professional life.  Some of our relationship is heavily documented. Most of it is known to select few. All of it was like a wild rollercoaster. From Maude to DJ Lil Buttercup you were always all in for life. As I’m typing this, memories of our time together rush to my head, I remember how absolutely wild you were and I start to tear up. Something you’d absolutely hate. And now I can’t help but smile because I remembered exactly what you wanted me to say at your funeral. Don’t think I can do it here… I thought you’d be around forever.  I wish we spoke often. Thank you for everything. I love you Kirstie Alley”

Ted Danson (ex-Cheers, ex-Mr. Mayor, ex-AW):  “I was on a plane today and did something I rarely do. “I watched an old episode of Cheers.  It was the episode where Tom Berenger proposes to Kirstie, who keeps saying no, even though she desperately wants to say yes. Kirstie was truly brilliant in it. Her ability to play a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown was both moving and hysterically funny,  She made me laugh 30 years ago when she shot that scene, and she made me laugh today just as hard. As I got off the plane, I heard that Kirstie had died. I am so sad and so grateful for all the times she made me laugh. I send my love to her children. As they well know, their mother had a heart of gold. I will miss her.”

Kelsey Grammar (ex-Cheers): “I always believed grief for a public figure is a private matter, but I will say I loved her.”

Rhea Perlman (ex-Cheers): “Kirstie was a unique and wonderful person and friend. Her joy of being was boundless. We became friends almost instantly when she joined the cast of Cheers. She loved kids and my kids loved her too. We had sleepovers at her house, with treasure hunts that she created.  She had massive Halloween and Easter parties, and invited the entire crew of the show, and their families. She wanted everyone to feel included. She loved her children deeply. I’ve never met anyone remotely like her. I feel so thankful to have known her. I’m going to miss her very, very much.”

John Travolta: “Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I’ve ever had.  I love you Kirstie. I know we will see each other again.”

Jamie Lee Curtis: “I’ve just heard the sad news that Kirstie Alley has died. She was a great comic foil in Scream Queens and a beautiful mama bear in her very real life. She helped me buy onesies for my family that year for Christmas. We agreed to disagree about some things but had a mutual respect and connection. Sad news.”

Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes Temporarily Taken Off ‘GMA3’ As Network Figures Out Plan Of Action

Due to the firestorm surrounding GMA3 anchors, Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, ABC announced on Monday morning via an editorial call that the two have been benched and are for now being taken off the show.

The move was announced by ABC News president, Kim Godwin.  This comes on the heels of the Daily Mail revealing a personal and romantic relationship between the two anchors.

According to reports, their relationship surprised many at ABC News, while others were suspicious for a long time. Both Holmes and Robach are married, though they have each separated from their partners.  Robach had been married to former Melrose Place star, Andrew Shue.

On the call this morning, Godwin shared: “I want to say that while the relationship is not a violation of company policy, I really have taken the last few days to think about and work through what I think is best for the ABC organization. These decisions are not easy, they are not knee jerk, but they are necessary for the brand and for our priority which, you guys know, are all of is … the people here at ABC.”

Last week when the story surfaced, Robach and Holmes anchored GMA3 and did not address the situation on- air.  However, Godwin is noting that a some kind of more formal action could be taken since the network was blindsided by the unexpected reveal of their relationship.

Look for Gio Benitez and Stephanie Ramos to take over the third hour of GMA for now.  The Hollywood Reporter first reported this portion of the story.

What do you think about ABC’s action to take Robach and Holmes off the GMA3 for now? Comment below.
