‘Beyond the Gates’ Stars and Creatives at Paley Center for Media in New York and CBS Daytime High Tea in Los Angeles
This week, Beyond the Gates, went east and west (the series tapes in Atlanta) with two special appearances and gatherings to promote their upcoming series premiere on Monday, February 24th at 2PM ET/1PM PT on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
First, the Paley Center for Media in New York City held a screening of the very first episode of the series for those in attendance, plus a panel featuring series stars, Tamara Tunie (Anita Dupree), Daphnee Duplaix (Nicole Dupree Richardson), and series executive producer, Sheila Ducksworth. The panel was hosted by CBS Mornings, Vladimir Duthiers.
Also in attendance was Beyond the Gates, executive producer, Kimberly Doebereiner, who is best known for her longstanding career at P&G (Procter & Gamble. With Beyond the Gates, P&G Studios is now back in the soap opera genre for the first time in over 15 years since the demise of beloved soaps, Guiding Light in 2009 and As the World Turns in 2010. As part of Black History Month, the Paley Center for Media held the first public screening of Beyond the Gates and the exclusive panel, as the soap opera is set to become the first new daytime drama launched since NBC debuted Passions in 1999. In the story and set in against the backdrop of a wealthy gated Maryland/D.C. in one of the country’s most affluent African American counties, the CBS series focuses on the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multigenerational family that is the very definition of Black royalty.
Prior to the panel and the screening, Tunie, Duplaix, Ducksworth, and Doebereiner took to the Paley Center for Media red carpet for some snaps, which you can see below.

Tamara Tunie returns to daytime as Anita Dupree, the matriarch of the Dupree family. It marks the first time, Tunie has journeyed back to the soaps in a contract role since her work as Jessica Griffin on As the World Turns; a part she played through various runs from 1987-2009.

Daphnee Duplaix returns to daytime as Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson, and Beyond the Gates also brings the talented actress back to the soaps following her work on Passions as Valerie Davis from 2004-2008 and more recently on One Life to Live as Rachel Gannon from 2009-2010.

No one gonna watch this lmao
And just what makes you think that? Be specific instead of just putting something down.
Ron Carlivati now writing for #BeyondTheGates? When did that happen? Let’s hope Michele Val Jean keeps him in check. Needless to say. I’m surprised!
He’s only a breakdown writer and was hired by her. I was a fan of the camp storylines he wrote, but to each his own.
Bob Guza works there too. So ironically, you have GH’s last good head writer and their worst head writer working together on a show that will be GH’s direct competition in many markets.
I’m already sick of this show, and it hasn’t even aired yet.
Omg thanks so much for sharing… ’cause we care that much.
Wish them well but goodness you have writers from soaps that suck! Could anybody be honest here surely you have some young talent out there
All of the scriptwriters have held positions previously and are all of colour, which is unheard of in daytime. Michele Val Jean and Sheila Ducksworth know what they are doing right now. Don’t worry Linda, the four other [bland] soaps will be there for you… for now.
I give it 2yrs at the most—
1( its the same ol’ with the same ol’ writers noting new nor exciting,
the writers struggle now for anything new–
2(no younger (35 and below)people will watch; they don’t have, attention spans, and their lives are lived fast most everything like shorts as TikTok vids etc..
3( Soaps are know as gramndms stories, to the youngers..
Heck. I can’t sit through a 90 min movie–
4( good luck to the soap and its upcoming fans–
I feel the need to address things here…
give it 2yrs at the most—
It will succeed beyond two years. It has been four years in the making, and from what I’ve read, has a two-year contract with an additional two-years in the wings. And per Sheila Ducksworth, CBS was looking to re-enter the soap opera world, so this is not some hasty decision to be made.
1( its the same ol’ with the same ol’ writers noting new nor exciting,
the writers struggle now for anything new–
It’s not, though. It isn’t the “same ol’ writers,” and if you looked into who is writing, the vast majority of names are ones we either have yet to see or have not seen in years. It’s a refreshing team of people, and based on clips we’ve seen, it is miles above any of the four soaps presently broadcasting on ABC, CBS, and Peacock. Miles!
2(no younger (35 and below)people will watch; they don’t have, attention spans, and their lives are lived fast most everything like shorts as TikTok vids etc..
Now this is purely ignorant; as someone in their early 30’s, I can tell you I will be watching; I do have the attention span⏤I have 2/4 of the American soaps, all British soaps, and Neighbours. The attention span is there. This is your pure ignorance talking. As for TicTac, I’ve never used it. Again, it’s just your ignorance showing right now.
3( Soaps are know as gramndms stories, to the youngers..
Heck. I can’t sit through a 90 min movie–
Are they, though? That is not what the demographics show, and judging from the viewing events hosted by CBS/NAACP, it’d suggest otherwise.
And can’t sit through a 90-minute movie?! You must be under 35, then, per your own argument. Or, if older, maybe things beyond Masterpiece Theatre aren’t for you, and that’s okay to admit.

‘Beyond the Gates’ Star Brandon Claybon Talks Inclusion, The Crossover, While the Fate of Martin Richardson Hangs in the Balance
On Friday’s June 12 episode of Beyond the Gates, after it appeared Martin Richardson (Brandon Claybon) survived being trapped under a tree after a tornado ripped through Fairmont Crest, viewers were left with a frightening cliffhanger when Martin got up and tries to walk, but only took two steps before he collapsed right in front of his husband, Smitty (Mike Manning)!
Previously, Martin had directed Shonda to use all the money donated from his campaign fundraiser for tornado relief efforts. Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix), Ted (Keith D. Robinson) and Smitty advised Martin that he needed to go to the hospital to get check out for any internal injuries or brain trauma. However, when Martin found out his sister Kat (Colby Nixon) was missing he began to panic. Martin says he just wants to go home and get some rest, even as his husband told him he should get checked out. Now, viewers will need to wait till the Monday, June 15 episode to see the upshot.
Official Beyond the Gates spoilers for June 15 share, “In the wake of the tornado, Shanice, Ashley and Jacob rush into action when someone collapses. Meanwhile, emergency surgery is required to save a life. Nicole’s update worries Samantha and Tyrell.” But is the surgery for Eva (Ambyr Michelle) who was rushed to the hospital or Martin?

MEETING THEE VICTOR NEWMAN
With such a pivotal week of story, Michael Fairman TV caught up with Brandon Claybon earlier this week during a roundtable press junket at A Toast for Black Excellence event in Los Angeles, promoting the major crossover event on Beyond the Gates which featured six cast members from The Young and the Restless, who also got caught up in the twister, but not the mighty Victor Newman (Eric Braeden). He somehow escaped and made it back to Genoa City in one piece.
Claybon shared his excitement of initially meeting Eric Braeden, because in the Black community, they have a long-history of watching the soap, and love Victor! “I think I just had to pinch myself because I was shaking hands with Victor Newman (on-screen), that means so much too many people spiritually,” expressed Brandon. “For people in my community, Victor Newman is everything and to have the Y&R cast in Atlanta and at our studios.”
While viewers wait to find out the fate of Martin Richardson, Claybon recalled the shooting of the Tornado storyline. “These episodes were a lot of hard work. We’re talking about 12 to 15 hour days, and you have to think about all of the actors supporting each other, it’s tremendous. Everything that we went through that viewers we’ll see sooner or later was so well worth it!”

PRIDE MONTH REPRESENTATION
In a very important illustration of inclusion, it was key in the story to note that Genoa City titans, Victor Newman and Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman), were backing Martin Richardson’s political campaign. Martin is married to Smitty in an interracial romance, and the two men are raising two black teenagers, which is a first on daytime television for a nucleus of a family. This story point is not lost on Claybon.
“Martin needs money (it was a fundraiser), so it was amazing that both Victor Newman and Jack Abbott were financially helping him with his campaign. This is is Pride month, you know, and for the first interracial gay couple on daytime TV, people are coming up to me to all the time, saying, “I see myself in your character and relationship,” and that’s what it means, representation, and that’s what we’re here for. It’s something that I’ve prepared for and I do know the responsibility it holds. Martin loves Smitty dearly, and Martin loves his family, and family is everything now.”
Previously, Michael Fairman TV spoke with Beyond the Gates series creator, head writer and executive producer, Michele Val Jean, where she named the racism storyline involving Martin killing a white bigot to protect himself and his grandfather, Vernon Dupree (Clifton Davis), one of her favorite storylines in the young soap’s history.”It’s absolutely remarkable. She didn’t tell me this. I didn’t know, but it means a lot coming from her,” expressed Brandon. “Michele’s been doing this a long time, and especially for her to have her own show, she thought it would never happen. The words, “a legacy.” I think about it all the time, especially because the show has the power to change attitudes.”

WILL BEYOND THE GATES SCORE BIG AT UPCOMING DAYTIME EMMY AWARDS?
Coming up next month, the nominations are expected to be announced for the 53rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards. This would mark the first year that Beyond the Gates is eligible for the competition for its season 1. Will they triumph?
Claybon had this perspective, “I am looking forward to having a moment to celebrate with the cast, and with each other. That’s the most important thing. Recognition is fun, but at the same time, it’s not why we do this. I’m an actor, but my passion in life is to encourage, uplift, entertain and inspire. I don’t want to think about that when acting. Let (awards) come if they may, but if they don’t, I’ll still be OK.”
You can check out a moment from Friday’s Beyond the Gates below, where Martin is seemingly “OK” and Abby Newman (Melissa Ordway) finds out Victor got out of Fairmont Crest just in time!
Now let us know, what do you think will be the fate of Martin Richardson? Will he have sustained a life-altering brain injury or be OK? What did you think of the final episode of the crossover? Do you enjoy the portrayal of the same-sex relationship between Martin and Smitty and sees its importance, as we are in the middle of Pride Month? Weigh-in via the comment section.

BEYOND THE GATES: A Tornado Hits Fairmont Crest Part 1: Eva and Martin on Seriously Injured List
On the Thursday, June 11 episode of Beyond the Gates the highly-anticipated tornado struck the Fairmont Crest Country Club while Martin Richardson was holding a fundraiser with the most prominent citizens of Genoa City and the D.C./Maryland area attending.
Martin tells the guest that weather reports indicate a tornado warning, and as he tells them to exit the ballroom to safety, the twister strikes sending everyone into peril,. Richardson and Dupree and Abbott family members are calling out for each other as chaos ensues.
Here is who got stuck with who: Dani and Bill are stuck in an elevator and begin to get hot and bothered after trying to escape. Hayley is stuck in a closet with Kyle Abbott and they makeout, and then to pass the time she puts on some tunes and they dance.

THOSE IN NEED OF MEDICAL ATTENTION
Things are much more serious for Kat and Eva who winds up in a closet but a mental wall comes crashing down upon them. As Kat rails at her sister, Eva says she doesn’t feel well and begins to spit up blood. Kat is a wreck and is trying to deal with her sister’s plight, but they are trapped.
Leslie is helping Anita with her injured ankle, while Vernon goes to try to restore some power, get walkie-talkies and do what he can for everyone inside Fairmont Crest. Nicole and Smitty hear a noise and realize Andre is buried under the rubble in the ballroom. As it turns Andre’s leg was injured when a piece of metal got stuck in it. Ted gets Andre stitched up and tells him to stay put.
The Genoa City contingent can’t locate Victor Newman or Kyle Abbott, as Jack and Diane try to help others. Meanwhile, suddenly yells out that someone is under the tree. Smitty and Nicole gasps as its Martin! He is not moving in and needs medical attention. Smitty fighting back tears asks Martin to squeeze his hand if he can hear him. But there is no response.
Abby Newman worried for the whereabouts of her father, walks away just as chandelier begins to fall from the ceiling, Diane screams out to Abby to watch out. We fade to black.
Beyond the Gates delivered as they had promised, a riveting episode and one of the best soap opera tornadoes harkening back to the days of All My Children. But what did you think of part one? Martin and Eva as the two characters currently most in trouble? What about Dani and Bill getting hot and heavy and Hayley kissin on Kyle? What was your favorite part of part 1? ‘Beyond the Gates’ Creator Michele Val Jean Reveals Top Three Favorite Storylines She Has Ever Written For, and All From ‘General Hospital’
If there is a story or script from one of your favorite soaps over the last three and a half decades that is most memorable to you, it’s probably because veteran soap writer, Michele Val Jean had something to do with it.
The current creator, head writer and executive producer of CBS daytime’s Beyond the Gates has been razzle dazzling us with some impressive cliffhangers in the infancy of the newest soap opera on the block which debuted back on February 24, 2025. Already in its second season, and recently renewed in a tremendous show of confidence by CBS for seasons three and four, this week its spotlighting the highly-anticipated crossover event when characters from The Young and the Restless arrive at Fairmont Crest airing now through June 12.
Val Jean has tenured history in daytime from: being a script writer for Santa Barbara (and breakdown writer), Port Charles, Generations, and lengthy run a few times at General Hospital where she served as script writer, breakdown writer, and at one time co-head writer of the ABC soap, to being a long-running script writer at The Bold and the Beautiful, to finally landing her very own show as its head writer with Beyond the Gates.

Photo: CBS
Earlier this week, Michael Fairman TV chatted with Michele at the Toast to Black Excellence event in Los Angeles, featuring cast members of Beyond the Gates and The Young and the Restless as a precursor to their multi-arc crossover event and asked Val Jean what has been her favorite story in soaps she has ever written for. She responded that she had a top three and they all happened to be from her time on General Hospital and in the 90’s.
GENERAL HOSPITAL CLASSIC STORYLINES
Michele revealed her top picks, “Elizabeth’s (Rebecca Herbst) rape, because that was personal, Kevin and Ryan (dual roles played by Jon Lindstrom), and Stone’s (Michael Sutton) death.”
When speaking of getting the opportunity to write for mild-mannered Dr. Kevin Collins and his psycho killer twin, Ryan Chamberlain, Michele explained, “I was always like a true crime person and Claire Labine (ex-head writer, GH) loved the vibe Jon Lindstrom and I has as writing and acting were concerned. Claire said, ‘Go with it. So, she basically let us work out who these characters were and I was like, ‘I finally have my own serial killer!'”

DOUBLE TROUBLE
“One of the first scenes I wrote for Ryan was in the police interrogation room and Mac Scorpio (John J. York) and Sean Donely (John Reilly) were standing behind him. He was sitting at this table and in his jumpsuit and there was a light shining on him and he started confessing to all these murders. It was like a 7-minute monologue and it went on and on. He had so many murders (piled up). and then at one point, he goes, ‘Wait, a minute!” He got confused about all the women he had murdered and I said ‘I love this character!'”
GH fans will recall Ryan debuted first in 1992, and then Kevin joined the main characters in 1993. Val Jean recalled, “When Kevin came onto the canvas, he was so arrogant. He thought, ‘Oh, I’ll go fix my brother.’ It took Ryan about five minutes to figure out who Kevin was. The next thing you know, Kevin’s in the middle of a mental institution going, ‘I’m not Ryan!’ And, Ryan’s out on a date with Felicia (Kristina Wagner) I think we must have killed Ryan off six times. That was fun!”

PERSONAL VANTAGE POINT
In 1998, Val Jean wrote Elizabeth Webber’s rape storyline. She notably based the controversial and critically acclaimed storyline on her own personal experience with sexual assault.
Michele reflected, “Elizabeth’s rape was really important to me because I was watching the Campus Disco in 1979 (when Luke raped Laura), and I was raped when I was 12-years-old. I know what rape looks like. I wanted to win Tony Geary (Luke) an Emmy because he hadn’t had one since 1983. I also wanted to call a rape a “rape,” and I wanted to heal myself, because back when I grew up on the south side of Chicago in the sixties, you didn’t go to therapy. You pulled yourself up by your bootstraps, and you went on. There was a trial and my rapist went to jail. Once that was over, there was no more talking about it. So, those were my three reasons for doing that story. I managed to do all three, and that was the most personally satisfying.”

STONE AND ROBIN
Perhaps, there is nothing more iconic and important, than the death of Stone Cates, who tragically dies of AIDS. The episode where he passes away with his girlfriend, a young Robin (Kimberly McCullough) who now has contracted HIV by his side, aired on November 29, 1995. Val Jean had noted on social media that it was both an honor and a heartbreak to write this episode.

BEYOND THE GATES EARLY FAVORITES
Now, Michele is setting new favorites in her repertoire with Beyond the Gates. She revealed that so far, there have been two standouts. The first, the violent altercation on a deserted country road where Martin (Brandon Claybon) fatally struck one of two racist white men with a tire iron to save his grandfather, Vernon Dupree’s (Clifton Davis) life and his own.
“I am most proud of Martin by the side of the road (story), because I didn’t think the CBS network would let me do it, but the network has been so supportive. I took a lot of personal satisfaction from that. I’ve never experienced anything like that! ” Another top pick? I loved the anniversary party when Nicole’s (Daphnée Duplaix) marriage got all blown up!
So, are some of your all-time favorite storylines the ones Michele Val Jean chose? Elizabeth’s Rape, early Kevin/Ryan and Stone’s death on General Hospital? What about the racism storyline centering around Martin Richardson and the bombshell reveal on Beyond the Gates that Ted had an affair with Leslie and a child, which came to light at the anniversary party of Ted and Nicole?
