The series stars: Tamara Tunie, Clifton Davis, Daphnee Duplaix, Karla Mosley, Alex Alegria, Lauren Buglioli, Brandon Claybon, Timon Kyle Durrett, Sean Freeman, Ben Gavin, Marquita Goings, Jibre Hordges, Jen Jacob, Maurice Johnson, Trisha Mann-Grant, Mike Manning, RhonniRose Mantilla, Ambyr Michelle, Colby Muhammad and Arielle Prepetit and production kicked-off this month.

Beyond the Gates is set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington, D.C., and in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States. Here you’ll find a posh gated community with winding tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions to call home. At the center of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty. But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered. And those who live outside these gates are watching closely. These are the places where our characters live, love, work and play. Those who have “made it” and those who haven’t are all trying to navigate life … and some with more grace than others.

Along with the aforementioned, Val Jean and Guza, other series executive producers include: Sheila Ducksworth, Robert Guza Jr., Julie Carruthers, Leon W. Russell, Derrick Johnson, Kimberly Doebereiner and Anna Saalfeld.

Well… if ReRon is involved, that makes this show less of a threat to GH at least.

The irony of him and Bob Guza working together though…..

I hear you! Two different styles!

Lather, rinse, repeat. WHY do they keep regurgitating soap writers?

I’m sorry! Why Ron Carlivati????!!! Total camp!!

You spelled “crap” wrong.

No Satan, I am.saying his plate writing style is campy. Some folks love it, but it’s not my cup of tea. One Life to Live and GH totally changed under his tenure: and OLTL never recovered. Fortunately GH did.

I liked when Ron wrote for OLTL

I smell a woke soap and the woke world ended November 5th.

Keep dreaming – we’re not going anywhere. There’s a market out there for this. Money talks (as you should well know).

We’ll see.

The market is dominated by MAGA. Look at the ratings of the legacy networks, the spinoff of MSNBC because of a huge drop in audience and profits, the sale of ABC by Disney, and the rise of new 24 hours live streaming channels funded by conservatives.

How do you define “woke”? And what gives you the impression the soap will be “woke”?

Take your garbage to Fox News or X.

What garbage? Vote for Kameltoe and Walz 2024 signs? Gladly.

Leave the discussion to the adults in the room. That you have to resort to childish name calling is rather pathetic.

Mimi. You’re what’s wrong in this world. Enjoy your darkness and ugliness.

Fox News is globalist establishment media.

Spoken like someone who doesn’t know what the word means.

“Ooooh rush me to the Burn Center”

Can’t do that. It just got shut down because Bobby Brainworm doesn’t believe burns are real. Even though several famous members of his own family could testify otherwise, if you know what I mean.

Donald couldn’t give a shit about you or any of his supporters so it’s time to wake up to reality.

Neither does Kameltoe

You must be a rebellious 13 year old girl.. you have the mean spiritedness.. like crude name calling.. grow child grow… if you can

KAMALA baby! Get it right! If you love Donald good for you! No need to be rude and disrespectful.

Bulls-eye. No doubt about its commitment to wokeness….. the writing team and major sponsor are testimonies.

Denise, are you able to expound on what is meant by a “commitment to wokeness”? This is the second or third comment about it this new soap being “woke,” but no one has squarely defined it.

This list of writers is impressive to say the least. Yes, Ron and Bob are negatives to this writing team.

The “writer” yes, although, he’s only a breakdown writer so he has no control. Guza Jnr isn’t as bad as many believe him to be. He knows how to move a Sweeps storyline, and he’s been out of the game 13 years. I’m sure he has some solid ideas.

Guza is good I will say

Honestly, overall, this writing team is solid. Real solid. Michele Val Jean is class and our head honcho leader & Robert Guza Jnr, despite all of his faults, will bring some real excitement to Sweeps period, and they both worked together on General Hospital, so that’s a promising sign. Susan Dansby is finally getting her due as script editor⏤which means bullshit won’t be making it onscreen. And I’m happy they have a continuity producer. I don’t believe any other soap has one of those, especially the one with a “historian” as head writer.

The two names I don’t like seeing are Sara A. Bibel & Ron Carlivati, both of whom I’m at least in comfort knowing are breakdown writers, only. Their roles will be tight and restricted, thankfully. But, I love seeing an all-POC team of script writers, which will provide a very unique POV to American daytime viewers. Let’s go!!! Bring it on!!!!!!!

I hope this soap is about real issues and not science fiction/devil worship/return from the dead/who’s the daddy. These issues have been done to death. I hope Guza does an amazing job. I am intrigued.

I trust Val Jean and the vision she has for HER show. She is creator, show runner, executive producer AND head writer. She knows what she’s doing.

Hey, what’s wrong with Devil storylines? I did some of my best work on Days!

You were good on Dark Shadows, too! Pity you needed an assumed name and only got two days of work! Here’s looking at you, Diabolos!

People want romance on soaps real issues are boring. As for “devil” stories, Days devil story in the early 90s was basically told as a love story so I don’t mind the dumb storylines of they are done with that mind.

Just what I thought, a supposedly all Black cast but the entire writing staff is white. So it’s going to be the same old treatment of black people on American soap operas. The characters will be Black by face only and living a lily white life! To the writers, I don’t watch American soap operas anymore because you tend to turn the black characters into white characters. All the black men usually end up with white women and the black women be placed in the background. But, to Black viewers, I suggest you take a look at South African soapies on YouTube. These shows have black writers producers directors and have stories lines catered to blacks people which include cultural what we believe, good people, villains everything you want in a soap opera. Black people don’t continue to fall for this type of treatment.

Time will tell, but the track record of this crew supports everything you said!

LOL!!!! Black people are the ONLY minority who are overrepresented on TV at this point if you go by the percentage of how many black people there are in the country. And on GH? They are THE most represented minority with about 15 characters; all professional from doctors, heads of police, assistant to the mayor, head nurse, jazz musician, social worker, and now three doctors: TJ, Jordan, and Gannon. As for interracial dating, it’s the white guy with the black woman; there was AJ Quartermaine with Keisha, Nikolas with Gina, Spencer with Trina. “Acting white?” What is acting white? All the characters are educated regardless of race. There’s a definite dialect when Marshall and Stella speak, and they’ve infused race into some stories that shouldn’t even be there. And now…there’s going to be an American black soap centered around a black family. Not a Latin family, not Jewish family, not a Japanese family, but a black family. And yet the whining continues….

How does converting to the Jewish faith fit in ? I know of many black people who have converted. Just wondering…

Absolutely!

No. It’s not. Do your research.

Instead of speaking without knowing, you should do your research. Every single person listed as a script writer (the more important roles vs. breakdown) is a person of colour. That is FACT. So to say the ENTIRE writing staff is White is completely wrong, and you’re not the only one trying to sell this as fact when it’s completely false. Try again, Art.

I know they should try to have more black writers I am not sure that would make it better but I have a feeling this will be just white liberal gibberish. Guza is good tho he might make it work.

Go to Great American Family. You may be their target audience.

Ok anything American is fine with me! Like are darling president Donald Trump who I love more than anyone!

Poor you.

He’s the messiah for morons.

The creator and co-headwriter Michele Val Jean is a Black woman — she was the first Black head writer of any American soap opera (GH). She is royalty and made sure all her scriptwriters were also Black.

Shes royalty? How so?

Daytime soap royalty.

Mimi is a Trumpster and there’s no.getting through to her. Let her bask in the glow of her Messiah’s victory!

Leave it to P&G and CBS. This smacks of the eventuality of the wrong people taking over a soap they’ll have no business helming. Great idea. Poor choices. TPTB are in line to tank the first new soap in decades. Well done y’all. Well done. Round of applause please.

Well I hope since it’s a soap highlighting a family of color. There will be people of color working on scripts and behind the scenes.

There are! One of the two co-headwriters and the entire scriptwriting staff.

I am very disappointed in this writing team. It’s going to be the same old stuff that brought down all the other soaps: Evil twins, characters returning from the dead, campy comedy, unrealistic plot lines, and the list can go on…… I was hoping for good storytelling with interesting, well rounded characters.

And how do you know this, Phil? I highly doubt Michele Val Jean would do that to her baby.

Campy- Hmmmmmmm, i.wonder who Phil is referring to???? One guess!

I Love this production. I just have one suggestion, please, please don’t break up Ted and Vanessa. Let them stay together so Leslie/Dana, can get her face crushed, Even though the divorce papers are supposed to be signed already, it can play out that the papers were never filed or something, to keep them together, please!

BEYOND THE GATES: The Cotillion Brings High-Society and Debs; as Shots Rings Out In Warehouse

Published

on

By

In a standout episode of Beyond the Gates, the beauty, the heritage, and the wealthy gathered for Samantha Richardson’s (Najah Jackson) cotillion debut. But that’s not all, the writers found a way to juxtapose this major event in a young Black woman’s life with the sting operation that was going down where Jacob Hawthorne (Jibre Hordges), who is undercover, and the cops are going to nail the leaders of the illegal blood plasma operation, once and for all

What made this episode so good was when you went to the danger of the cops outside the drop point, and Jacob and the bad guys inside, you felt like you were watching a primetime procedural drama; especially the way the scenes were directing and the camera work. Then, you bounce back to the heartfelt cotillion and what it means for the young woman and the high society families in Fairmont Crest.

It should not go without saying, that the Beyond the Gates, wardrobe, hair and make-up department did a phenomenal job with the cotillion and the casting of the debs and their escorts. Pretty much perfection. And let’s not forget about when the debs and their guys busted a move right in the middle of the formal dance. Nice touch!

COTILLION SYNCHRONICITY

In story, Donnell (Alex Cheeks) is late which freaks out Samantha and Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli). No one knows where he could be. Chelsea (RhonniRose Mantilla) and Kat (Colby Nixon) step up to be the hosts for the proceedings when the usual host is unable to perform her duties due to falling ill.

When it’s time for the debs to be announced one by one, Francesca (Madison Alsobrook) steps on Samantha’s gown intentionally, but lucky for her, Donnell has arrived just in time to catch her from hitting the floor. After each deb is presented, they are each joined by their escort and make a trip around the dance floor. Next, came the Waltz which was precision by all involved, with a little 2026 dance moves sprinkled in the middle of it.

Jessica’s (Camryn Jade) parents did not like the fun of the dance and called her a “video vixen” and an embarrassment to the family. Nathan (Brennen Suttle) insults Samantha which leads to the young man being told to stay away from Terrell (Jaden Lucas Miller) by Ted (Keith D. Robinson). Next, June (Jasmine Burke) comes upon Nathan drinking from a flask! (Don’t tell me he is going to be drunk behind the wheel of a car and hit someone?)

Upset, Jessica tells Tyrell they should go be alone together and she knows where they can go to finish what they started the other day. However, it’s time for the reveal of the Platinum Deb! To do the honors is … Deanna McBride (Angela Fairley).

MAN DOWN

Elsewhere, outside the warehouse and inside the surveillance car, Elon (Malachi Malik) and Marcel (Darryl W. Handy) keep tabs on what is about to go down, and Randy (Maurice P. Kerry), who was sent by Joey ends up arrested in the back seat of the cop car. Inside, Grayson (Jordi Vilasuso) and Jacob prepare for the delivery and big meeting. Derek (Ben Gavin) shows up having followed Grayson there and sees Jacob.

Dr Lia Whitmore (Cecelia Specht) arrives, saying she wants to be a part the big presentation to the higher-ups. She comes upon Jacob, who reveals himself. Knowing she’s caught, she tells Jacob she will strike a deal with him. Suddenly, Ren (Donny Carrington) gets a call about a leak and decides they need to end the life of Grayson! Ren screams they will all pay for double crossing him.

Suddenly, guns are drawn as the police arrive. Derek tries to stop someone from being shot, but at the end of the episode we see Jacob down on the ground. Beyond the Gates EP’s, Sheila Ducksworth and Julie Carruthers previously teased that someone will die this week, but who will it be? Is it Derek? Lia? Grayson? Jacob, or someone else?

Now below, what did you think of the cotillion episode part 1? Who will be named Platinum Deb? Who do you think doesn’t make it out alive at the warehouse? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

YOUNGER GENERATION GETS THE SPOTLIGHT

Speaking on what viewers will see the week of May 18-22,  Sheila Ducksworth, who is also the president of CBS Studios/NAACP Venture, shared to TV Insider, “These episodes are really like nothing that we feel like people have seen before. Yes, there have been cotillions on television before, but the way that we’re doing it, in the milieu in which it’s set, is just incredibly unique. It’s an institution that has existed in Black America for over 100 years, and it really speaks to legacy, it speaks to culture, it speaks to heritage, and also resilience.”

Ducksworth added, “Tune in because there is importance to what we’re saying with the show, but also just the sheer enjoyment of being able to see what one of these cotillions looks like and feels like. I think people will just be beside themselves; we definitely are working for that to be the goal. You’ll see a lot of stuff with the younger set that you haven’t seen before, and a lot of that plays into the cotillion and then beyond the cotillion.”

DANGER, DANCING AND SHOCKERS

However, Julie Carruthers notes that there is another major plot point about to explode, now that Jacob (Jibre Hordges) is close to nabbing Dr. Lia Whitmore (Cecelia Specht) and company for the illegal blood plasma ring.

“We have the culmination of the mystery that Jacob’s  been involved with and I’m not going to tell you much more, but there’s a big event happening the same night as the Cotillion and the Cotillion is also fraught with its own surprises and unexpected disappointments,” teased Carruthers to Soaps.com. “It’s a lot of eventful things happening all at the same time. Amazing clothes, the girls are stunning, the dance is phenomenal. The music’s spectacular. It’s a beautiful, beautiful event.”

‘Beyond the Gates’ Star Trisha Mann-Grant Opens Up About Difficult Scene, Getting Her Son Off the Streets, and Plight of the Homeless

Published

on

By

Trish Mann-Grant has wowed audiences with her portrayal of Leslie Thomas since hitting our screens last year on Beyond the Gates. The talented actress has made everyone in the soap opera genre take notice of her performances as Leslie is a true instigator who carries secrets and will ruffle the feathers of most anyone in and around Fairmont Crest, if given half the chance.

In real-life, Trisha has publicly spoken about the time period of her life when she found herself homeless. In fact, during a livestream chat on the Michael Fairman Channel along with her on-screen daughter, Ambyr Michelle (Eva), she shared some of what she endured.

Now in a recently aired scene on the CBS soap opera, Leslie, throws some shade June’s (Jasmine Burke) way about her living under the bridge, when June is trying to get her life back on track. For Trisha, as she details in a very personal message on Instagram along with said scene, it resonated so profoundly. First, because of her own experience, but also because Trisha shared that her son is still homeless.

Photo: CBS

HITTING CLOSE TO HOME

Here’s what Trisha expressed, “During this scene with Ambyr Michelle and Jasmine Burke, my homeless son, Daniel, crossed my mind. I also remembered the time when he was 5 and I was pregnant with his sister and was myself homeless for a period. My character, ‘Leslie’, throws a dig at Jasmine’s character ‘June’, referring to her still living under the bridge. That was a difficult line to utter.”

She continued, “As actor’s, we have to sometimes detach what we’ve experienced to get through dialogue or use what we’ve experienced. In this scene, I had to detach from the almost 12 years of having a child who chooses to live a homeless lifestyle. (Yes, molestation, addiction and depression are all a part of that choice). Before any of these experiences, I have always had empathy for the homeless but as a mother of one, now more than ever. I have done all I can to get Danny off the streets but know this; I have not lost hope.”

OUT FROM UNDER THE BRIDGE

Next, Trisha shared her hope and belief for her son, Daniel and not listening to the voices of people like her soap opera alter-ego. “The beauty of this scene is that “June” may not yet be BEYOND THE GATES with the rest of the characters but she certainly let “Leslie” know she is NO LONGER UNDER that bridge,” stated Mann-Grant. “I am believing in real time, stepping out on faith that my son will overcome his present situation and walk fully into his God-Given Purpose. Just like some of us, that bridge represents our past and even though our present may not be all that we want it to be, it definitely isn’t what it used to be. We have to focus on the elevation and ignore the ‘Leslie’s’ of the world.”

In closing, Mann-Grant gave some major inspiration for anyone that is currently in a situation as she has been, expressing, “To all the Mommy’s out there, like me, don’t give up. Keep praying, keep believing that this too shall pass. There are help groups out there for parents of homeless children too. Stay strong and look at the message of this scene. ‘June’ is on the rise and so are we all!”

You can watch the scene Trisha references below.

Now let us know, what did you think of Trisha’s message to all the moms out there, children who are on the streets and the plight of the homeless? Are you glad that Beyond the Gates is tackling the subject with the character of June who is doing what she can to improve her life? Come Emmy time, is Trisha on your wish list of nominees? Let us know via the comment section below.
