The Young and the Restless has finally got their man.  This morning TV Guide Magazine’s Michael Logan broke the news exclusively that none other than the talented and oh-so-sexy Justin Hartley has landed the primo role of the black sheep of the Newman clan … Adam Newman!

Hartley, who soap fans remember from his early days on Passions, but more recently for his juicy primetime television roles on Smallville, Mistresses, and one of our favorites on last season’s Revenge as Patrick, will be joining the CBS soap opera in late September when he begins taping scenes.  Hartley will first air as Adam right in time for the all important November Sweeps!

Justin told TVG, “I’m so pumped about joining Y&R — I watch it all the time and can’t wait to get in there and get my hands dirty! “I have great respect for daytime drama. I love the branding. I love the style. What can I say? I love good soap!”

And in terms of what went down to ultimately land Hartley the role, he says he met with Y&R EP Jill Farren Phelps and CBS Daytime exec Angelica McDaniel and “came away away feeling very excited. The powers that be are smart, lovely people with kind hearts. It’ll be wonderful going to work knowing I’m really wanted.”

Hartley also knows the pressure is on to prove himself with the the cast of the number one soap and the long enduring fans of the series who have been very vocal on the entire casting of a new Adam Newman and the dismissal last year of predecessor Michael Muhney.  Justin revealed: “Y&R is the No. 1 show and the acting company is exceptional. There’s no period of adjustment with these people and that’s daunting. I don’t just have to be fantastic, I have to be fantastic right now!”

So what do you think about the casting choice of Justin Hartley of Adam Newman?   Excited to see Justin join the Newmans?  Let us know!

While Im not sure he can do the role justice, I could watch him read the phone book.

although I agree with everyone who has said he would make a much better Billy.

I agree he would be better as Billy. He resembles Billy, not MM.
In more ways than one it seems, too.
Just stinks that MM isn’t returning after all.

His girlfriend (Chrishel Stause) is besties with Melissa Clair Egan (Chelsea). Awkward! LOL!

But I admire Justin’s love and respect of the genre. Actor’s lower their nose to soaps a lot of the time, even actor’s that got their start from these shows, but it’s so refreshing to see another one who embraces it wholeheartedly.

I think it’s inspired casting!

Hello, Jules! Been too long….have missed you at the GH threads! I agree that Y&R did an awesome recasting here….I only wish that Mr. Hartley were coming to Port Charles instead! (He could have been a great Lucky or even AJ, although my heart is still with Sean K in that role….but I digress.) I never guessed that he would deign to do daytime again after his considerable primetime exposure. He was absolutely fabulous on “Revenge” and I was so hoping to see his handsome mug return sometime this season. Sigh….

You know what’s amazing, Shay? I read your comment in my inbox before I click the link to this site, and I knew right away it was you! I don’t know anyone else on here (or many other places for that matter) who not only use, but also correctly use, the word “deign”! LOL! Hey chica!!

Port Charles misuses, ruins, ignores and kills off most of its cast. Y&R may be one mighty boring daytime drama, but they can only work their way up. The showrunners at GH have such a huge head about where they are (or think they are) with viewers, advertisers and critics, that even when the shows are entirely unwatchable, they will excuse it away and blame us. I agree on paper Hartley could have worked on GH, but at present, I feel sorry for many of the players on there as it is. At Y&R he won’t be quite as little a fish in a big pond. I too never thought I’d see him on a primetime soap again (I remember his Fox days very fondly :P) but I’m pleasantly surprised to hear what a quality guy he really is.

What did happen with his gig on Revenge? Did it just end? Did they not renew his contract?

Ahhhh, Jules, my telltale love of the English language has betrayed me once again! Hah! So good to touch base with you, my favorite Canadian! Your posts on the GH topics are much missed, particularly since I totally concur with your spot-on critique of the state of the show and its creative aspects…they are a complete, mangled mess at the moment, and as such, could have certainly used the excitement of a JH casting….even if I wouldn’t have wished that ungodly burden be put upon him!!!! He was utterly magnificent on Revenge as Victoria’s first-born (illegitimate) son, Patrick Osborne. Although first introduced as an aspiring artist, he soon demonstrated his real talent as a psychopathic killer. Along with his on-again/off-again tryst partner, the fabulous Nolan, he added a really stylish flair to the canvas. Sadly, Mr. Osborne was sent away mid-last season to Italy (purportedly to study his craft) in a co-effort by Victoria and Nolan to save him from himself and the repercussions of his crimes. From my perspective, it was a most unwelcome departure, and I have always held out hopes Patrick would return…I have no idea if the Revenge showrunners have decided that his character has run his course or if they are entertaining the notion of his reappearance. It’s also difficult to ascertain how this new role at CBS will affect that possibility, but given Hartley’s past association with ABC programs, it would have seemed a more natural progression for him to land in Port Charles. Oh well!….At any rate, I do believe that Y&R viewers are in for a real treat if Mr. Hartley is allowed to do what he does best….that is, show his dark and tormented side! Enjoy…..

Jules, as yourself and Shay, I also appreciate the correct usage of the English language. Thus, I hope you forgive me if I dare to correct yours…..you wrote, “Y&R may be one mighty boring daytime drama, but THEY can only work THEIR way up…”
“Y&R” is the subject of this sentence. It is a collective noun, therefore making it singular. Every other part of speech following, must agree with said subject…..that is, the verb and all pronouns. So, the sentence should read…”Y&R may be ONE mighty boring daytime drama, but IT can only work ITS way up…”
I am sure that’s an oversight on your part. Bad grammar is also my pet peeve.

CeeCee:

You seem like a delightful person and like both Shay and Jules, you write so very well.
When it comes to posting on soap forums, I tend to look at the comments as casual conversation so I don’t nit pick on other people’s choice of language or pick on their punctuation and grammar. I only take umbrage with folks utilizing text speech (do u no what i mean?). I also tend to make many errors myself in this forum as the window afforded to us for writing our comments is rather small and there is no edit button. Worse yet, once one pushes that submit button there is no delete button so I find myself gasping with horror when I see my own posts which sometimes make absolutely no sense ( I mean less than usual). I know better–most of us know better but we still make those careless mistakes in the haste of the moment.
I have a masters degree in English and Russian Literature with a minor in linguistics, and I found that the higher I went up in academia, the less persnickety I became when it came to informal writing/conversation. Having said that, Jules is not necessarily wrong when she writes, “Y&R may be the one mighty boring daytime drama, but they can only work their way up.” This is one of those murky terrains which the English language sometimes inhabits. The subsequent independent clause which follows, “Y&R may be the one mighty boring daytime drama,” changes tone and treats Y&R as a team of people so Jules was not necessarily incorrect by using “they” and “their.” The object is implied and the reader understands the meaning. Moreover, Jules was utilizing a casual conversational tone.
Unless someone is delivering a paper or writing professionally, we can’t get all caught up in the minute details of the English language because it can rise up to just become ridiculous. This is why Winston Churchill said,”A preposition is something with which I shall not put.”
Now before you or Jules writes, “Harry may be one boring commentator, but he can work his way up,” I shall bid you adieu. Good night.

I’m not even sure why this was a necessary point to bring up on a soap forum talking about an actor in a role. I have always admired Shay’s expressive and whimsical writing and have told her that often. It wasn’t an opening for criticism of my own grammatical shortcomings.

I see nothing wrong with the sentence that’s being knitpicked here. It reads fine to me, though admittedly I do not hold a grad or post grad degree on the subject. However, I do personally cringe every time I read the first post I left, having made “actors” possessive not once, but twice. Oh my heavens! An edit button would definitely not be so bad!

I’m looking forward to seeing what he brings to the table. I know some (but not all) MM fans will make it an uphill battle – and don’t get me wrong, I’ve been resistant to seeing my favorite characters replaced – a good example was seeing Trevor St. John cast as Todd, so I get it… but I also came to love TSJ in the role – and I hope people open up for Justin as well. He seems excited and also loves and respects the genre. Bring it! 🙂

Good point about TSJ – I didn’t accept him for a while, and one day I realized that he was Todd to me. I’m always skeptical about favorite characters being recast, but sometimes it works.

Carlys #2 & 4
Jack Abbott
Roman Brady (John Black)

For those of us who came of age in the 1980’s, Peter Bergman will NEVER be Jack Abbott!!! Even now when I occasionally just happen upon Y&R and he’s onscreen, my first thought is “What is Dr. Cliff Warner doing there???? And why is he trying to fill (the late) Terry Lester’s shoes?…..(Rhetorical question, of course….)

He looks more like he should be Billy…i wouldve tried Brandan Barash in the role who looked more the part unless the actor has other commitments…but J.H., is a fine interesting actor who i remember from Passions!!!

Good call Jim. Brandon would have been good.

Agreed, Burgess Jenkins isn’t really fitting in well. But if Y&R had recast Billy AGAIN I think that would have just been too much for me.

At this point I would rather they take the character Billy off canvas than watch this new guy in the role. David Tom may had his issues, but at least he was familiar with the role and to viewers.

Yes, Mary–I concur. I accepted Billy Miller’s exit because it appeared to be something he wanted to do. So I gave David Tom a chance and to me, he was Billy. I am giving the Sawdust Man a chance too, but he still is not Billy to me.
I think Burgess Jenkins will become Adam as long as fans can accept that the part has been recast and that Michael Muhney is not coming back.
Some have picked on his height (“he’s too tall!”) while others have picked on the color of his eyes (‘they’re too brown!”) but the true test will be whether he can capture the tormented, flawed, conflicted and vulnerable young man Adam was without trying to replicate MM’s performance. That is no easy feat. One thing I have noticed–Burgess’s smile is very similar to Michael’s.

i sure hope the fans give him a chance before they start sending hate messages to him…………..

Your right. Theres only one MM so anyone will struggle but if he can act, he will make it.

He’ll do well. Pretty good actor.

I hope he doesn’t get his “hands” too “dirty.”

lol.

LOL thank god Hands Newman is no more!

LOL

classic on so many fronts

GH wins again…I heard Hands Newman might be going over to GH as the New Hands Morgan…lol…unless Days snaps him up first and we will finally see Hands Brady on the phone with his wife Hope…lol

Lol…On a semi serious note, was the “hands” performer ever credited? Who is the actor? On a serious note, maybe PR is coming back to end his DAYS.

Not sure who played the part of Hands…you may be sad or happy to know it definately wasnt Chaz Bono…lol

ROTFL!!!

While Michael Muhney was my top casting choice, and Matt Bomer was my choice recast, I support Justin’s arrival to The Young and the Restless. My only wish is that he doesn’t leave Mistresses since I enjoy his character Scott far too much. I only hope that everyone gives him the fair chance the the deserves in the role. It’ll be an adjust, but I have the confidence in Justin’s acting capabilities to bring something new to Adam Newman; I have a feeling he’ll have great chemistry with Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea).

MCE has great chemistry with everyone, she had it with Michael Muhney, Billy Miller, David Tom and now even Burgess Jenkins. So I’m not to worried about that, and I really hope Adam and Chelsea end up together.

Jimmy. I agree MCE could spark chemistry with a Homer Simpson Chia pet head,

I’m very excited at this news! Loved him on Passions and Smallville. He wasn’t on my radar for the role, but I am pleasantly surprised at the casting. I have hope for this show and will hang in there to see how it works.

Congratulations Justin Hartley!

Huh? Don’t get me wrong…Justin Hartley CAN A-C-T. However, he calls TPTB of Y&R “smart, lovely people with kind hearts”…HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Gimme a break. If TPTB were ‘smart’, they wouldn’t have F-I-R-E-D Michael Muhney. They wouldn’t have gotten rid of the F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S Genie Francis and Debbi Morgan (which was all of that heartless JFP’s doing). Most of all, if TPTB were ‘smart’, they would get rid of the following DEAD WEIGHT: Stupid, sniveling Summer (blech), that Devon/Hilary/Neil nonsense (more blech), Abby (who is in serious need of a long-overdue BEAT-DOWN), Lily (whose constant meddling and NONSTOP temper tantrums are BEYOND OLD AND TIRESOME), that TOTALLY D-U-L-L Dylan (watching that dude onscreen is like watching paint dry…lol). The list goes on and on. Also, the character of Adam Newman as a blond???? Let me see…no. I don’t think Justin Hartley has any idea as to what he’s getting himself into. Bottom Line Here: Justin Hartley as Adam Newman????? Sorry but it’s gonna be a DISASTER!!!!!

Dude, you are spot on except MM was not coming back so lets hope blondie can make the role his own!

JFP is smart enough to kill off a child character so the show would rake in emmys, which it did. She is smart enough to wait until November sweep to debut this new Adam, knowing that it will bring in viewers, even if they don’t stay, they will be there when their viewership means the most. Creatively, this team is clueless, I give you that, but when it comes to working the system, kissing up to right people, taking credit for some else’s good ideas, deflecting your mistakes onto some innocent bystander, then JFP is as smart as they get.

Mary…I don’t mean any disrespect here but your comment/posting kinda scared me. Yet…you make a very valid point…which I totally agree with. Thanks. To me, Jill Farren Phelps & Co. are just like local politicians…WORKING AND MANIPULATING THE SYSTEM to get what they want!!!!! Working and manipulating the system…now THAT (to me) is really and truly S-C-A-R-Y!!!!! Sadly…it is what it is. Sad.

Take care, Mary. XOXOXOXOXO

I agree with EVERYTHING YOU SAID! I hope it’s not a disaster. I’m willing to give him a chance. I wish fans could grab pitchforks and torches and hunt down JFP though. Her chance is looooong goooone

isnt he too young to play the role? MM was a bit older . oh well………….

Yes but that what Jill Farren Burton wanted!

That is what people were saying about GT, and I think she is fine as Phyllis. I think he will be good.

Also, he is only 2 years younger than MM in real life.

The role was aged anyway when Chris Engen (the original Adam) was hired, so even if he’s a few years younger, it doesn’t really make a difference.

Loved him on Revenge…haven’t watched Y&R since Fred and Barney Rubble’s kinfolk walked the earth. However, I like this actor. May tune in to check him out!

Oh I hear you, rebecca1! You already know how much I LOVED JH on Revenge! I was really hoping that he would somehow find his way back to the Hamptons this season….He could have least come to GH if he wanted to do daytime!!!!

Hey Shay! Yeah…as much as I hate to say it…cause you know I’m missin’ my Sean Kanan’s AJ…he would make a great AJ if they ever bring him back from the dead…and even a good Jason.

I’m with you, rebecca1!….Still missing our guy AJ, too! Although I will always remain hopeful that one day our favorite Quartermaine will return in the form of Sean Kanan, I have to say that JH is possibly the only actor I could actually envision and accept as a recast. He was THAT amazing on Revenge!

The way that Sean Kanan/AJQ was treated was one of the worst things this regime has done IMO. And that is saying a lot. Caught him on B&B recently. He is so hot as Deacon Sharpe. I don’t usually watch B&B but loved the character from Y&R. Might have to start taping the ep’s Deacon is on. I can’t believe TIIC at GH let him get away and then proceeded to trash AJ and his portrayer. I was so happy when Jason left and AJ came back and they proceeded to royally screw things up.

If they don’t wrap up the AJ/Connie reveals pretty soon and in the best possible way I’m going to be PO’d. Focus, RC, focus.

@MBmomof3…..I totally concur with you as to the AJ/SK debacle over at GH….it was, and continues to be, one of the sorriest chapters in Port Charles history. The only positive thing to come out of it is that Kanan is finally in the right place to be able to use his considerable talents, and for him, I am thrilled. Although I gave up the B&B habit years ago, I did happen upon a recent clip of Deacon with RS’s Quinn where he told her in his characteristic top zinger form, “Normal is a destination you ain’t ever gonna reach!” He was on fire! It was hilarious and just one example of Sean’s superb skills when given the kind of material he deserves. I will never blame him for wishing to leave GH after all the subpar plots and scripts he was offered….it’s just a real shame that he had to go elsewhere to display his superior stuff. As for waiting for any storyline to wrap up on GH, well, good luck! It could be quite a long while before anything of consequence happens.

To whomever responded to this post….I did receive your reply in my inbox, but have no idea of your name. However, I hear you!!!! When I spoke of the desire to perhaps someday see the return of Sean Kanan as AJ, I envisioned it as far into the future of GH….and a post-Cartini regime. (Should the show survive….) That is why I didn’t want to see the character irreparably damaged with more disparagement or a possible revisionist type of recast any time soon. But upon the news of JH joining Y&R, it suddenly struck me that if anyone else could ever do the role of AJ justice, it would be him!!!!

Shay, I think that was me. Thank you for responding.
I also asked how it is you are getting notifications when someone responds to your comment (this comment never went through).
I never receive notifications from Michael Fairman’s comment section. This is both good news and bad news. Good news in that I do not get to see the cantankerous responses to my comments and bad news in that I do not get to see the cantankerous responses to my comments.

He is only 2 years younger than MM. I don’t really know his work but will be happy to give him a shot before making ANY comment. And they can dye his hair. My best is Adam may want to slip back into GC as incognito as possible

NOOOOOO….leave him blond!!!! He’s perfect just as is!!!!!!!!

Honestly don’t know what to think of this but I’ll give him a chance!

I’ll give the guy a chance. I remember Chris Egan as Adam. I loved him and was sad to see him go. Then comes Michael Muhney. Loved him and Eric Braeden wanted him out. So Justin, the stage is all yours, good luck!

Justin will be terrific, as the new Adam Newman. The man is sexy and a wonderful actor.

Finally some casting news that I can get behind!! This is awesome news!! He is a very good actor with charisma and I think he will lighten up the darkness that plagued the character before. Way to go casting!!

Yes! Go Justin!

He looks sooooooooo young, like he belongs with Summer and Finn.

Yeah–that’s not happening here. NuBilly–just isn’t cutting it either. Sure JH sees them as kind hearted–cause they gave him the job. All crap.

Richard…I agree. Thank You. Dude…the last 2 words in your posting summed it up PERFECTLY…ALL CRAP!!!!! As for that Justin Hartley dude, I give him 6 months or less. Yikes.

Take care, Richard.

I was suprise that they could get an actor of Justin Hartley’s caliber , so I am looking forward to seeing him in action as Adam Newman. I know there are some die hard Michael fans but like some of you posted, I am hoping he will be giving a decent chance to make the role his own.

I think he’ll be great! Looking forward to the Adam storyline resuming. Not a fan of MM, so I’m fine with the re-cast.

Thank goodness it’s over. Now we can all move on 🙂

I really like him and wish him well with the role. I hope fans of Y&R give him a chance. But I’ll miss him being on REVENGE; I always thought there might be a chance of him returning this season.

I haven’t seen any of his work but I hear he’s a good actor so I’ll definitely give him a chance. Similar to the Phyllis situation, where I would have loved Michelle Stafford to come back, it would have been amazing for Michael Muhney to return. But I’m willing to give all recasts a chance, so I hope Justin does well in the role. However, I do agree that he looks better suited for the role of Billy, but the last thing that role needs right now is ANOTHER recast. Hoping for the best with this casting because, honestly, Y&R really needs it right now.

If the show had also brought back Kay Alden as head writer I’d be thrilled with this news.

With the current writing team penning Adam’s return, I have very low expectations…and suspect even those won’t be met.

FANTASTIC NEWS!!!! Not only is he drop dead sexy, but he can act! He has showed intensity and multi-layered performances on several prime time shows and that can only serve him well in the important role as Adam Newman. Very excited what his arrival will bring to the show’s dynamic.

Now if I could just have my Stafford back….!

Ok. Is he old enough for the role?

Good luck to him..I like in Mistresses and Revenge..He is a good actor..I stop watching Y&R after 20+ years, too much recasting and messy storylines..Not a big fan of writing and the executive producer at the helm.

Alright!!!! Way to go Foxworth Crane. I can’t believe JH returned to daytime after having so much success in primetime.

Happy for Justin…. sad for me… I was getting used to him popping up on some of my fave shows (Smallville, Revenge, Mistresses)… if he had only continued the trend on GH (preferably as nuJason)!

Justin’s a good actor and made a hot Green Arrow on Smallville. He mdeseore than deserves a shot at this role.

I am very thankful they didn’t go with some 40+ year old. The nu older Billy is bad enough. Justin is a great hire!!! He’s been in the soaps (daytime & primetime) so he should fit in seemlessly.

In real life Justin Hartley dates Chrishell Stause who is best friends with Melissa Claire Egan. On the show they will be a couple. Since they are already friends I hope they will have great chemistry together. Justin is a great actor and hope he continues on Mistresses. Doubt it so I’m kind of bummed.

Well I am just glad they didn’t go for your standard soap star — although he has been on daytime, he hasn’t been for a while, so he is like a fresh face, but with solid acting roles behind him.

But he is right about one thing, he has to be great from the get go– for this recast to fly, viewers will have to be so taken in with his take on Adam, in order to make this work. I don’t know if he won any fans by referring to the powers that be on that show as being so wonderful, when so many believe they are responsible for the decline in quality and substance — it was almost like he was “coached” to say that in his public statement,

But I do credit JFP for being smart enough to know when to time his arrival— November sweeps– she has already guaranteed an increase in viewers just by lookie lou’s alone who will turn in, just to see him as Adam, even if they do it only once, during sweeps that all she needs. She knows how to work the system.

Don’t watch y&r but congrats on landing Justin seen him in pristine n he’s good.

Interesting comments that JH should be recast as the new Billy. I still don’t know what it is about Burgess Jenkins. I’m trying to root for him (and definitely prefer him in the role to David Tom) but his delivery reminds me of a weather man reading copy. Where is the nuance, and charm? At this point, I really don’t see the need for the character to remain on the canvas unless he can really start connecting with viewers, and I do hope that’s the case.

Perfect recast…….for Billy. Justin is a decent actor and great to look at but can he pull off one of the most complicated roles in daytime history? Doubt it. Also surprised he would come back to daytime, he seemed to have a busy nighttime career.

I would be curious to see if they change the character of Adam and make him a sweet little frat boy. Yuck! Not familiar with this actor at all I guess will see what he can do.

Well, k/kay, if JH echoes his stint as Patrick (on Revenge) where he displayed a true talent for crossing over to the dark side, then, NO, new Adam will NOT be a “sweet little frat boy!” Hartley was awesome on that show, and I am so jealous that GH didn’t land him instead!!!!

I am reassured by the number of you who are saying he can act (I don’t think I’ve seen him on anything); that shows that at least TPTB understood that just-another-pretty-face was not going to cut it and they had to get somebody who had the potential to do the part justice. Unfortunately he’ll be combating bad writing from the get-go, so he’s got his work cut out for him. I do hope people give him a chance. He didn’t have anything to do with whatever actually went down with Michael Muhney.

Great choice IMO.

I will keep my comments when he appears but I am willing to give him a chance and hope that he can keep the newman family feud that his predecessors have in the role.

@Jules; Harry. Pardon me, I did not introduce the topic of the English language on this site….if the topic had not been mentioned, then I would not have commented. As it is, grammar is part of the English language, yes? I merely expanded the introduction.
You may make grammar mistakes, Harry, but you do not bring the English language to the fore. In this case , it was…I teach High School Physics, however, I try to use proper grammar at all times. …even within this forum.
But, you are both right; I should have kept my thoughts to myself…I suppose I ruffled some feathers. Please accept my apologies, I did not mean for my post to sound as a snide remark. I hang my head in shame, Harry…I have been duly chastised.
Have a good night.

I am a delightful person, and I must elaborate on my reply, Harry. With all due respect, sir, you are wrong…regardless of your degrees. English grammar does not Chang with the times…dialogue or phraseology does, not grammar. I am not anyone off the street, but someone who is well educated and a stickler for grammar. The title Y&R is and will always remain singular. It is a TITLE…a collective noun meaning DRAMA….that is a fact.
No disrespect meant here as you seem to be much older than I and, I was raised to mind my manners and respect my elders. Therefore, sir, it need no browbeating or reprimands from you.
Accept my apologies because it seems that I irritate you somehow. Rest assured, I will never broach the subject again, nor respond or comment to any of your posts…I do like you, Harry. But I seem to be an irritant. Stay well and have a nice day….I am sure I make typos as much as the next person, but we all can see what those are…..peace out; that’s from my Gran. Lol

@Jules. As impossible as it may seem, I have nieces under the age of 15 who watch soaps and read these posts, with supervision, that is . Thus, this is the perfect forum to mind our grammar. Considering the fact that many of American children never pick up a book…they get their info–sometimes distorted– from the internet, it would be nice to see correct grammar used. Regardless how much Harry defends his position, he is wrong and I truly regret sounding harsh….I speak as an educator.
On one episode of GH, Sam says to Silas…”I shouldn’t of came”… C’mon now…’HAVE COME’…that is the correct phrase, not OF CAME.it is time someone stood up for grammar. By the by, have you heard Weird Al’s latest song?…that is my whole point.
Again, pardon my impertinence and I humbly apologize.

just wanted to check out the actress who passed away wasn’t watching then. As far as the new Adam I gave the show up when mm was let go and have no intention of going back. I used to keep up with it through the previews online even that got boring. So I am out for good now.

I meant eye candy and of course we know he can act.

As a long time viewer, we are losing too many of our favorites to General Hospital. Please bring back our favorite Adam, that would be Michael.

unacceptable, I loved michael muhney and its going to be hard to accept this new guy, we’ll see.

Christel Khalil Reveals She Almost Quit Acting After ‘That’s So Raven’ Audition, But Then Came ‘The Young and the Restless’

The Young and the Restless fan favorite, Christel Khalil (Lily Winters) is the special guest on this week’s edition of Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart which dropped today on Tuesday, June 23rd.

During the interview with Rebecca and Greg, Khalil who had played Lily Winters on-screen since August of 2002, nearly 24 years with the CBS soap, shared how early on her teenage acting career, she was ready to call it quits in show business, after a heartbreaking audition for the lead of a new Disney Channel sitcom, which later turned out to be the hit seres, That’s So Raven, starring Raven-Symoné which ran for four seasons from 2003-2007.

Christel recalled what happened. “I was 14 and I had always auditioned for all these Disney projects. So I auditioned for That’s So Raven, it was between me and Raven-Symoné and it was called at the time Absolutely Psychic,” explained Khalil. “The character was this girl who had psychic ability, but then when Raven got the role, they named the title of the show after her.”

HOW A BROTHERLY TALK CHANGED THE COURSE OF CHRISTEL’S CAREER

Reliving the disappointment to Greg and Rebecca, Christel explained, “I lost that part and I was just so devastated, because for the network call there were 20 people in the room watching me, and I just have always had such performance anxiety. I just completely bombed the audition and it was terrible. So, I was just devastated. I was actually going to quit acting and then I got the final call for The Young and The Restless and I wasn’t going to go.”

It was Khalil’s brother, who actually got her to reconsider, and if he hadn’t, we would not have our Lily Winters in Genoa City! Christel recounted, “I was like, ‘You know what? I’m done. I don’t want to do this anymore. I’m just going to hang out with my friends.’ I was just devastated. My brother, who is seven years older than me, and he had quit acting at the same age that I was at that time. He said to me, ‘I promise you, I actually really regret quitting. Just go on this audition and if you don’t get it, you can quit.'”

Christel’s screen-test for the role of Lily was actually with the late, great, Kristoff St. John who would play her father Neil (Later it was revealed to Lily, that Neil’s brother, Malcolm Winters was her bio-dad).

ACTING WAS EASY WITH THE LATE KRISTOFF ST. JOHN

“So, I went (to test for Lily) and I remember the screen-test was with Kristoff St. John. It was just so easy to act with him because he’s just so there. I remember just being on set, and that was my first time there for a screen-test where you were actually on set. I had never experienced that before. It was my first time being with an actor and  having makeup done, which just helps you really be able to do your best work.”

Recalling the screen-test with the St. John, Khalil, “It was where I had to be emotional ( in the scene) and I always had issues being emotional at auditions. But I was there with him, it just came, and it happened. It was natural and I felt so good and it was amazing. It stands out in my mind a lot.”

Deidre Hall Marks 50 Years as ‘Days of Our Lives’ Dr. Marlena Evans

If you have ever tuned-in to the soap opera genre over the last 50 years, and witnessed some of the greatest romances, drama, classic and outlandish storylines of all-time, you would have seen Deidre Hall smack dab in the middle of it as longtime Salem heroine, Dr. Marlena Evans.

It was 50 years on this date, June 21, 1976 that Hall first appeared on DAYS on NBC which was its home for 57 years before it moved to its current streaming platform on Peacock in September of 2022.

In Hall’s first episode she was introduced as a psychiatrist treating Mickey Horton (John Clarke) at Bayview Sanitarium after he suffered a complete mental breakdown. Mickey learned that his brother Bill Horton (Edward Mallory) was the biological son of Mike Horton (Wesley Eure) with his wife Laura (Susan Flannery) and that he had been lied to for years and years. From that moment on, the rest is television and soap opera history. Days of Our Lives put Hall front and center.

There were so many heartbreaking and shocking story twists involving the beloved Marlena. One of the first was the historic crib death of baby DJ (Don Jr.) in 1980, Marlena’s infant son with Don Craig (Jed Allan). The story had never been told on daytime television and Hall’s performances received accolades from TV critics to fans when Deidre received thousands of letters from grieving mothers who had gone through the same thing in their own lives.

DAYS also brought Deidre’s twin sister, Andrea Hall Lovell to the show as her on-screen sister Samantha, who had a grudge and even locked Marlena up in a sanitarium and took her place! Fast-forward and in 1982, DAYS launched the Salem Strangler story where everyone believed Marlena was his next victim, only it turned out to be Samatha. Jake Kositchek (played by Jack Coleman) was revealed to be the actual serial killer.

Later, Deidre would assume the role of Marlena’s look-alike, Hattie Adams in 2004, once played by her sister, Andrea. Over the years, Hattie has come back to Salem and caused trouble giving Hall a chance to play a different type of character, then the always upstanding Marlena.

THE LOVES OF MARLENA

Deidre Hall struck gold with all her leading men: from the late Jed Allan, to Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady, and of course, her enduring love story with the late John Black played by the iconic Drake Hogestyn. In fact, Marlena’s 1986 wedding to John (who was believed to be Roman at the time) remains a favorite of fans to this day.

TOP MARLENA STORYLINES OF ALL-TIME

While the list is long, here are several that were some of the memorable during Deidre’s five decades in Salem!

The Possession (1994- 1995)
Considered one of the most ambiguous, outlandish and unforgettable story arcs in soap opera history, then Days of Our Lives head writer, James Reilly went there! Marlena was possessed by the devil! That included; the demonic eyes, hissing at father John (Black) the priest, morphing into creatures, and the classic levitating in her bed! It became a cultural phenomenon and cemented Deidre Hall’s status as a daytime television legend. Just ask Ryan Gosling!

The Affair with John Black (1993)
John and Marlena’s forbidden love could not be denied and they had passionate affair, while she was still married to the real Roman. Problem was her daughter, Sami (Alison Sweeney) caught her mother having sex with John on a desk that changed Sami forever.

The Salem Stalker Mystery (2003-2004)
In a shocker, Marlena was revealed to be a serial killer who bumped off several Salem favorites residents who were all alive on the island of Melaswen (spelled “New Salem” backward). Turns out, she was manipulated and gaslighted by Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) to do the “killings” and had no memory of her actions.

The Pier Scene (1991)
This remains Michael Fairman TV’s all-time favorite Deidre Hall moment, which featured some of the best acting in the storied careers of both Hall and Drake Hogestyn.

In the story, a presumed-dead Marlena returns after four years. One foggy night on the pier, John is alone, and Marlena steps out of the fog to reveal herself, and is reunited with the love of her life. You can watch it any year, any decade, and in any moment, and it will have you reaching for the hankies again and again. (best music score fo a soap scene of all-time too!)

Kristen’s Secret Room Reveal (1997)
Marlena was caught in Kristen Blake’s (Eileen Davidson) elaborate web of lies, when she was held hostage in a secret wine cellar/room until John managed to track her down, leading to an iconic on-screen reunion. The classic catfight between Hall and Eileen Davidson was one for the ages.

It should be noted that Maison Blanche, Queen of the Night, Possession, Aremid and Lady in a Cage were all a part of classic DAYS storyline and all featured Hall at the epicenter of it from 1993-1996.

THE RECENT YEARS OF MARLENA

In recent years, DAYS brought back the possession 2.0 storyline under then head writer Ron Carlivati in 2021 where the devil leapt back in Marlena after taking advantage of a frail Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes)

In 2025, viewers watched the end of the love story of John and Marlena, as John succumbed to injuries sustained in an explosion saving a vial of medication needed to bring Bo (Peter Reckell) back to life. Marlena has been a widow on-screen since June of 2025 as Hall as portrayed the good doctor struggling with her grief and to move on with her life since his death.

One story that never goes away is Stefano DiMera’s (the late Joe Mascolo) obsession with Marlena, his “Queen of the Night.” Even in death, Stefano is toying with her from the great beyond with the mysterious chess set and the missing “pawn,” that he had gifted John and Marlena in his will. The mystery is currently unfolding on all-new episodes of Days of Our Lives.

Tune-in to Days of our Lives on the Monday, June 22 episode as Marlena looks back at her 50 years in Salem.
