‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).
Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.
Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON
Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”
Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).
Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.
“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?
During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.
Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.
You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.
Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.
Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.
As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY
Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.
Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.
Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS
Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.
In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Courtesy/ABC
Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”
So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.

I hope the rumours are true! Well deserved for Becky, a true talent and a definite asset to General Hospital.
I really hope that its true! Becky is a hardworking and talented actress, and don’t forget veteran of the show, and her firing was absolutely wrong. GH has let too many veteran go, due by “storyline-dictated” exits. Elizabeth Webber still has so many story to tell. And, once again, I hope this is true. (:
It definitely is great news!! I am so very happy for Becky Herbst!
I am so glad that she’s back. Liz is the heart of this show for me. This really made my day!:) #BeckyNation loves you, Becky!:)
I hope it’s true. There is so much GH needs to do with this character starting with finally telling Liason’s love story. The greatest love story never told. YET!
I am so happy to Rebecca Herbst staying with GH. Would love to Liz/Jason get to be a family w/Jake!
So happy for Becky and for eveyone that loves her. She deserves great things happening for her!
I couldn’t be more thrilled with their decision! Thank you for always being so fantastic to Becky and to her fans Michael! I had given up on GH, her firing was the last straw in a series of misdeeds by TPTB who seem to want to forget certain parts of General Hospital-the HOSPITAL side!
Becky Nation!!
I hope we get a Webber sibling story, that would be awesome. No matter what coupling fans like for Elizabeth-we all love Becky/Elizabeth. She is more than any pairing, she is the heart of GH and I for one can’t wait to see what comes next for our girl!!
I am so excited! Wow…can’t believe TPTB actually listened to us. I’m really happy for Becky and us!
I am so excited about the news! i am glued to my instant media!!! Come on Twitter, tell me it’s true. Mr. Fairman, thanks for complimenting Becky’s fans!!! We think we are fantastic and wonderful… and that ALL that is reflected in the actress and character we love so dearly: Rebecca Herbst/Elizabeth Webber
This is the best news I have heard in awhile. I was going to stop watching GH upon her departure. I’d like to think that we fans had something to do with this. I know I wrote the show a letter about it. Now give her a great storyline! Then bring Genie Francis back!
I am beyond thrilled and Happy that Becky is staying. I hope we will get a little Liason action soon. I love that the fans rallied behind Becky so thanks to the BeckyNation and thanks to all the soap bloggers and mags too.
I really hope this is true. Rebecca is fantastic.
Hope this is true! Could fellow castmate JJ have gone to bat for her?
This is wonderful news. I am glad for Becky and her fans. Thanks to their efforts and the efforts of the magazines, the bloggers and most importantly to Becky for being the class act she always has been.
BeckyNation rocks! I am so glad we got Becky re-hired, assuming that is the case. I just hope this means tptb will quit backburning her and give her character, Elizabeth Webber, some REAL stories. She should be there helping Michael w/his rape, and I would LOVE to see her have a GNO with Robin and Brenda and even BrookLynn too. BrookLynn and Elizabeth should realize they have nothing to fight about and move on from the pettiness into a friendship. And hey, can I get a REAL liason story now? 😀
I am so elated that Becky is back with GH!
Now onto bigger and better story lines for her
I hope the writers bring back the honest, kind, spunky Liz!
Viva Liz!
Viva Becky!
I hope it is true! If so, I’ll continue watching for Becky, and try to ignore all the silly mob mania.
But, now the question is are they just going to sideline her and let her fade away like Alan, or are we actually going to finally get to see Liz in a quality storyline? There are a lot more things that can be done with this character, even the old “amnesia and return as a bad girl plot”. We all know Becky can be one fantastic bad girl.
Really glad she’s staying, but still wonder why there was never any mention of who her mother is.
This is wonderful news for Becky and of coarse her fans. Maybe, I will start watching againn if they can give her a good storyline and stop ruining what is left of Liz.
This is wonderful news! I couldn’t not be more excited as a fan and happy for Becky who has been a staple on the GH canvas forever. YAY!!!
So if RH is staying who are they firing in her place?
If I were Rebecca Herbst, I would not return after GH’s behavior because that is insulting my talent, reputattion, and disrespecting my 14 years of dedication.
Hot dam !!!!I guess GH realize without Becky the show had a hugh chance of cancelling with out BECKY on board!A HUGH THANKS to all who helped in the cause!
Just look at that gorgeous face! And ask yourself why you would not write a storyline for her. I have never seen her phone in her performances. BRAVO!
I have to say it’s not the power’s that be at General Hospital….It’s the fan’s….that made them change there minds…..and they should get the credit…..
IF it’s true then congrats to Becky. I have respect for the actress although in my opinion watching the character onscreen is like watching paint dry. I’m not buying that it’s due to public outcry that they brought her back though. Thinking it’s more of a matter of her coming back with a lower salary.
I believe that whatever reconstructing or the thing that they did, as they say, if that’s really the reason, it was because of the public backlash on Rebecca Herbst’s firing. I mean, if that is the real reason, they would have done so before they fired RH, not after. I think the public outcry definitely played a big factor in TPTB reversing this horrendous decision.
Agreed with Saher M. This was SOLELY due to fan outcry because the fans, especially longtime fans, have had enough of this show continuously disrespecting history and longtime fan favorites. It’s no different than when the fans lashed out at TPTB when they thought it would be a good idea to have Michael kill his own father AJ some years back. Due to fan outrage, which the brass eventually admitted to, they changed that entire storyline.
Becky’s firing was the straw that broke the camel’s back for many people. She’s a legacy character and deserves to be treated as such. It makes no sense to fire her, then suddenly rehire her a month later and decide to pay her less, just cause. No, sorry, this was all due to fan outcry. She’s one of the most popular actresses on the show and has some of the most dedicated fans. Not everyone may care for Elizabeth, but they definitely care for Becky. I’m a proud fan of both the actress and character.
I am so happy BH is staying!! I haven’t been able to enjoy GH since the news was released. This is fantastic news!!!
I am delighted that those in charge have reversed their decision to re-hire Rebecca. She is one of the only reason I still watch GH. I hope that the writers go back to writing Liz as the spunky, kind woman she was and not the character they have warped her into in the last two years.
Becky is such a fabulous actress and like the poll in SID she deserves a new story.
For once the fans are getting what they want? I hope she give the show the finger. They already ruined her character anyway.
If they can redeem murderers and rapists on soaps and turn villains into heroes, they can redeem Elizabeth Webber. Sleeping with her fiancé’s brother is the lesser of those offenses. And as much as it would be nice for her to tell them where they can go, as no one would blame her for that in the least, she still has to pay the bills and GH is a steady paycheck. Unless she gets an offer she can’t refuse elsewhere, from another soap, primetime gig, or film, I can understand pride taking a backseat at this point and she has TONS of fans who lobbied for her return. The writing for Liz has been crappy and unfair over the years, yes; no one could argue against that. But Becky is one actress who can turn ish into sugar.
Screw that! Elizabeth should be the bad girl for a change and be the single mother like a lot of women are. She needs to toughin up and take charge of her life. Even if she’s got to fuck some people over to take care of her boys. I want Elizabeth to get Lucky and Nicholas for child support and destroy heleana. Let that old hag feel the pain on the way to hell!
It would be interesting to see Franco as Keesha Ward’s screte husband. Then they both play with Jason. ha! ha!
Franco and Keesha Ward? That would be hot! She was fine as hell in the 90’s
GH was just being racist during that period; they didn’t want a White typical actor with a Black actresses as a couple. That maked since from a white point of view and that goes to show that America hasn’t changed much since the turbulent days in the 20th centry.
Especially good looking white men. No, GH wouldn’t go for that.
Yes, yoou’re right about that; but we are now in the 21st Centry and television has changed with the times. With immigration constantly growing in America, society has no choice but to tolorate with such change. However, people know that predudice is based on how people feeling inside. Morally, is wrong to discriminate but you can’t change how an individual feel. So lets’s keep it real. Either way, it would be nice to see more black actors and actresses on Daytime TV like General Hospital as star roles; not just guests or temporary roles and get booted out like they did with the character Keesha Ward. She would have been a great asset to the show if had given a chance.
That’s what i just said. I think you are trying to agree with me but at the same time, you are not facing the fact that Daytime TV are still being racist in many other ways today. So, you keep it real.
Viewers plus ratings equals money. That’s what it’s all about now. Why didn’t black actors try other Daytime Soaps during the 90s? The keesha Ward character could’ve join Young And The Restless and landed a role there. They had more black actors who had major roles.
I see you act like you knew the answer to that point of view, but like you said, Keeping it real. During the 1990s, Daytime TV Soaps were beginning to break racial barriers when came to interracial couples being put on the screen. Therefore, General Hospital used one black family like the wards to see how well they can fit into their enviorment where the Quartemaines lived. When I saw these episodes then and the way the ward family storyline was depicted, raised a lot of red flags. I’m talking about Civil Rights Leaders from real black communities that might have complained about the horror historical events occurred from slavery, racial segregation to the continuing fight for Civil Rights in the 90s. Remeber the Yusef Halkins Murder in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, NY. in 1989. REV. Al Sharpton and other Civil Rights leaders protested against the Killers as they marched in that racist neighborhood? So, that’s one way to look at this point of view. Also with Daytime TV not keeping black actors as major roles didn’t seem too cultural then. However, a lot has changed and Daytime TV had to change the way the world still viewed Americans during the 90s. Today, the Soaps is still trying be more
open minded to not just black actors and actresses, but to interracial relationships.
That was all I was pointing out from the beginning. So, understand that it’s not so much about race. It’s about images and the actor who best fits the part. Storylines are becoming more relative to real life and ongoing issue society struggles to deal with.
I think General Hospital is one the top and most watched Daytime TV show since it inception. They are still going strong!
You sound like a typical NAACP bitter person. How can you say Daytime TV is still racist? If you know so much about race and society, tell me how many Daytime TV Soaps that actually have black actors playing major roles? I can name quite a few. Black people have many more opportunities than any other American today and they are rising quite swiftly.
I agree with Bootycrack’s point when he/she compared to Daytime TV in the 1990s and today. It has made remarkable changes. By the way, there are black producers, casting and directors who hires the actors. Idiot!
Stick to the facts. Not trying to sound like that Al Sharpton! Thank god he’s not our black president like Mr Obama whom i like.
i was so devastated about her exit i thought i may never watch again! She is my favorite character. i love her fights with Carly and then compassion for having children with dangerous men, undying love with the original Lucky and her silent relationship with Jason thats always hanging in our faces waiting to be rekindled. She is a pivitol character in my eyes and i am so happy she is staying.
