CBS Daytime completed the 2014-2015 broadcast year once again at #1.  It marks the 29th consecutive year in a row for the network which has the strongest and healthiest line-up of programming in the day-part of any of its competitors.

Of major note for daytime drama fans; the just completed broadcast year delivered to The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful their best ratings numbers in years!

For Y&R, they averaged 5.21 million viewers, which is a +1% increase from a year ago and its largest audience since the 2009-10 television year. And for B&B, they averaged 3.94 million viewers, up +2% and the daytime drama’s largest audience since the 2005-06 television year.

Elsewhere in the line-up:  The Talk  topped one of its main competitorABC’s The View for the first time in women 25-54 (1.0/06 vs. 0.9/06) and tied for the first time in women 18-49 (0.7/05) demos while averaging 2.60 million viewers.  Let’s Make A Deal delivered stellar numbers, and The Price is Right still remaining the most watched show in daytime averaging 5.58 million viewers for the year.

So, what do you think about the tune-in increase for The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful?

Are Chuck Pratt (EP and head writer Y&R) and Brad Bell (EP and head writer B&B) bringing some of the best drama to daytime television in years, and in turn that is being reflected in viewership? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

All thanks to Justin Hartley!

Yes and Ian Ward.

Yes, Ian….He’s great!! Finally, a little mischievous spice. I love his take on ‘chaos’. He seems to revel in it. Yup; all for a good cause, Timmm. Down with Victor’s head.

Phyllis’s imaginary friend “Fred” cracks me up.
I fully expected him to tell Phyllis that his late wife’s name was Ethel and her best friend’s name was Lucy.

WHAT DID YOU DO TO THIS SHOW SONY/CBS! Okay tried again today to watch the show. I had to stop. Then I went back later because I taped it. OMG it was so bad I just said, Self, This is so depressing and a waste of time! I deleted the show AGAIN! I cant. I will keep in touch with all the awesome soap fans I met thru all the years on social media who watch Y&R for 20 plus years like me . But I cant sit still to watch the show. God everything went down hill since all the nostalgia classic couples are torn apart and acting so un like there normal self and Mrs C was a center core ( My grandma beloved) and without Jeanne Cooper and with these new horrific awful writers Jill Phelps and Chuck useless Pratt I cant do this anymore . Sorry Sharon Case, I love you and all the great years you gave me ! I LOVE SHARON! I still miss Drucilla ( Victoria Rowell ) also miss so much Gloria aka Judith Chapman and we dont get enough of Jill . Im done I cant do this to myself anymore. FIRE these awful writers! FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do like Noah finally with a real grown women like Marissa, so one good thing . Neil is a disgusting mess

LIES! The show Y&R has never been this bad. All the stories just so bad. I really meant the worst writing I ever saw on any soap in all of my 40 years watching soaps. Please fire the writers that have destroyed Y&R BOOOOOOOOOOO

I hope the Y&R writers stay away from DAYS!

Josh Griffith (former headwriter of Y&R) has turned DAYS into must see TV!

The ratings are probably internationally and they are when it was good like in the early 2000 but certainly not the worst writers in history jill f phelps and chuck pratt because i really dont like the show anymore sadly

I don’t understand how Y&R has so many viewers. Their key demos are HORRIBLE and have been for months now.

Y&R has more viewers internationally than in USA.
And yes, by whichever means CBS manages to throw in (some) international numbers.
CBS is a huge business, they have ways 😉

Hi, Su.
I don’t keep up with ratings…domestic or otherwise. But, if what you say is true, that the number of viewers is greater abroad; then, I would think it’s because of the international intrigue; the dialogue and fashion offered by Y&R. GH has been serving the same meal for decades….mob stories upon mob stories.
Inasmuch as I hate the Marco story; the fact that he was a foreigner, a charismatic, albeit malignant one, has international appeal.
Then, there are the ladies’s clothes…accessories, shoes….Haute-Mode, through and through. Y& R is known for its display of sophisticated couture……for both sexes.
It may seem trivial, but fashion takes up a big chunk of what makes the world go ’round. Most of us (women) pay attention to the clothes worn on the show….I actually pay homage to Eileen Davidson’s clothes and the ensembles on Gina Tognoni’s perfect body……just my opinion.

The soaps are rotten young and the restless stinks. the storys terrible . It must be pretty pathetic that they are trying to lie to people that this chuck pratt who never should get near a pen and paper can get ratings up ….. no no no the show yr is the worst bad awful boring very boring and all the couples have zero chemistry

CBS highly promotes their 2 soaps, BB and Y&R.
They highly promote their soaps internationally. (that is where many of the high numbers come from)
CBS has actual promoters, a promoting team for their soaps..

ABC does not promote.
The promoting of GH is done on twitter by Frank, he is the chief GH promoter.
ABC has promoted by showing of a GH clip usually around sweeps time but no real effort of promoting.

NBC; Days has a promoter and recently has been promoting with the turnover of Days.

Y&R was good today–it offered character driven plots and explored the sibling rivalry which exists between Ashley and Jack and Victoria and Nick.
I am also enjoying Sage freaking out and acting like Victor is the dingo who will take her baby.

Well Harry you know Sage is going to go off the deep end and end up at Fairview with Sharon and Patty.

That is very interesting, su000.
And with the 50th anniversary of Days there has been a ton of promotion and their ratings have improved, haven’t they? I remember years ago the commercials on ABC for “Love in the afternoon” and they would show clips from all the shows. Do they still do the soap stars at Disneyland or is that gone as well? I don’t think soaps are dead and hope not and wonder if maybe these new higher ratings will help and maybe ABC will promote General Hospital more??

Oh please, GH is promoted by EVERYONE. They have mags making excuses for the horror FV and RC did to GH. ABC uses it other shows like the View and the Chew to promote GH. Let’s not forget the game show that had GH actors on. DWTS also had GH actors. That online TV even twists the numbers to make it

Got cut off. Twist the ratings numbers to pimp GH. When GH ratings were high they were hailed the greatest then we find out they were never that high. It was an error. CBS deserves their number one and gets credit. GO CBS. Y&R and all their daytime ia great.

All the networks promote their daytime shows on their networks, at times, and then only daytime watchers see them.
The soap mags have soap stuff but the soap fans buy them, read them.
promoting on daytime to daytime viewers is promoting to fans already watching the soaps lol ..

neither is promoting to get new viewers, the daytime soap watchers and daytime viewers are seeing the soap clips and most are already watching their soaps so not a great promotion for getting new viewers– and that is not promoting to get new viewers..

the Nielsen ratings had a glitch for ALL the soaps, and when corrected it wasn’t really a difference in the numbers to get excited about.

Cathy is right–I do see GH promotions from time to time, albeit not as much as I once did.
I never see any promos for Y&R but I don’t watch during breaks so there’s that.

Where does CBS promote their soaps? I never see nothing about Y&R. I see GH on Talk Soup which is usually in jest BUT its publicity!

hi Timmm..
I had recently read about CBS/Sonny promotions, I can not find them now.
I did find this from the NY Times, it shows Sonny international promotes Y&R.

It ”” Sonny”” not CBS who is doing the international promoting;
GLOBAL APPEAL PAVES THE WAY
FOR INTERNATIONAL VERSIONS
Not every show translates well abroad, but
the classic storytelling that has made
“The Young and the Restless” a success
at home for 35 years has made it an international
hit seen in more than 30 countries.

“It’s a show that works very well all around the
world,” says Steve Kent, senior executive vice
president of programming for Sony. “We are huge
in France, we’re on in Australia, we’re on in a lot of
Eastern [European] countries, we’re on in the U.K.”
It works so well that stars like German-born
Eric Braeden are practically mobbed when they
appear in Europe, says Kent.

In most countries, the shows air without alterations
and in the same five-days-a-week schedule.
Very rarely are changes needed, though
there was some editing that had to be done
when it began airing in India about 10 years ago
to remove some scenes of affection that might
have offended the audience, Kent says.

David Mumford, executive VP planning and
operations for Sony, says the show has tremendous
broad-based appeal that cuts across all
ages and demographics, regardless of country.

ohhh Sonny just ran a Y&R marathon in China lol ..

ABC really does not promote, it is evident they rarely promoted AMC and OLTL..
(( I think perhaps some of Y&, CBS high numbers also come from Sonny doing their thing as only a mogal company can do .. lol;)

ohh and-
Nielsen Ratings are internationl, also..
If Sonny can get 1 country out of the 30 countries under USA broadcasting, that would up the Y&R ratings, a lot ..

Su, the sheers are put up to shield whoever is behind them. It is not ‘Hilary’, obviously…thus, she must be hidden from view. Plus, the sheers provide protection from mosquitos? Bugs, in general? LOL.

And in fact the real reason for the highest number of viewers is because they deserve it. The other two networks simply cannot compete with the quality and consistency of good writing and production. The other two networks are lacking overall in quality television give or take a few shows.

Quality is quite subjective to each individual viewer. I, for one, have never considered Y&R and B&B to embody the quality that you speak of. I believe the one thing that has helped Y&R (and subsequently B&B) all these years was the Price is Right lead-in and the fact that in many markets, Y&R did not have any direct competition in that time slot.

MF…Can you show year ratings for GH? Figure there will be a dip because of Fluke, but hoping for a rise this coming year with the new/old writer reboot which I gather really goes into effect in October. Looking forward to that. Hope they deliver.

MY opinion is if the network wants a soap on the air, its on the air. These ratings are manufactured. Although Y&R is better in 2015 than 2014, it still sucks! Case in point, Phyllis meets a strange man in the deep woods and has no qualms about entering his camper, which is also in the deep woods. Phyllis was basically raped by Marco and she is off in the woods skipping around picking flowers and having coffee with a “Fisherman!” Marissa’s husband shows up and gets more screen time than some of the vets get in 6 months. Neil is such a psycho that he breaks into the hospital drug cabinet, conveniently forgetting that hospitals do have camera monitors everywhere. Mariah and Kevin finally hit the sheets and find out the sex is dull. Lily is sorry she slept with Joe, but is okay with him playing with her son. Lilly is a skank! Sharon knows she needs some help and checks into a mental facility, but cannot tell her main squeeze that she lost the baby. Plus, she sees Paul’s sister in the facility and doesnt mention it to Dullyn! What’s wrong with these pictures? PLUS, its official, Jack is weak and will always be Victor’s whipping boy! He finally has Victor by the mustache and caves in and insists Ashley return Lancelot to Victor! Hogwash!

Bravo Tom! Great post!
And have you noticed that Neil manages to be dull even when he’s suffering from psychosis?
The only time he was interesting is when he was coupled with the spirited, slightly nutty Dru. She took the best part of himself with her.
Being an alcoholic, being struck blind and being betrayed by his wife and son failed to make Neil interesting. Now they are trying to make him interesting by making him bat shit crazy and it ain’t working!
Moreover, nights are growing cold with the arrival of Fall and there lies Hilary in bed, bare armed and with nothing but a sheet covering her in the open boat house.

LOL I was thinking that very thing today– why is he keeping her in that boathouse when he has a lake house filled with rooms?? I mean if Neil is so worry about her getting better wouldn’t she be better off somewhere dry and less drafty?

I get a kick out of the white shears/curtains behind her lol
that really looks stupid in a boat house.
I can not picture Neil putting up curtains lol

FOR ONCE, SOMEONE IS RECEIVING WORSE HEALTHCARE THAN OUR VETS! Poor Hillary.

“… PLUS, its official, Jack is weak and will always be Victor’s whipping boy! He finally has Victor by the mustache and caves in ”

this is the catcher

Hook, line, and sinker

I hope Ian and/or Fred w/Adam help, rise to the occasion…. and just snuff the ole goon OUT

They said Ian was brought back as an evil SOB to help redeem Victor in our eyes!

the promotion part for these soaps are big and it is true that they have exported themselves well internationally . Bold , Days , Young are the soaps that are the most broadcast internationally . they screen in France , Europe and in Australia but not only . in other countries too. GH is no longer broadcast internatonally and the promotion of it is weak . With Young and Bold i feel that over the past 5 or 10 years a new audience has tuned in , probably a younger one who didn’t see the golden era of these soaps and for them the quality of these soaps are great . The purists who watched Bold and Young for decades stopped watching when Bill Bell died and their favourite actors and characters were written out . You have these new generations of viewers that have replaced the ones that watched these soaps in the 80’s and 90’s and who are more accepting of a Charles Pratt or Bradley Bell type of writing that is not that difficult to write , very predictable with repetitive triangles and over the top and in the moment twists and turns with little long term effect . These soaps have become cheap and accessible , they are products of consumption that reflect this fast paced , instant gratification society we live in . There is no longer this art of storytelling and this art of acting when these soap actors had that theater experience which enhanced the quality of the writing . This new audience is not in demand of that anymore . Young and Bold have managed to become products of their time .

Great to see actual gains for daytime soaps. I watch both Y&R and B&B. I’m a new viewer to B&B.

“Are Chuck Pratt (EP and head writer Y&R) and Brad Bell (EP and head writer B&B) bringing some of the best drama to daytime television in years, and in turn that is being reflected in viewership?”

Answer to an easy question: NO

These ratings, even if an increase, are HORRIBLE from a historic perspective. I strongly suspect that, 20 years ago, these type of ratings would mean one thing: CANCELLATION.

It is a sad comment about the current state of the overall soap industry that these historically mediocre ratings are touted as a success due to a slight uptick and that someone seriously would query if the writing is the best that we have seen in years.

Pratt seems to be going to for the “cheap” quick fix to Y&R’s problems —- disasters of the weeks, worn-out plots involving lookalikes, etc. There appears to be no real effort to invest in the long-term future of Y&R from a creative angle: No character development, nothing really taking the show forward. This is not the type of writing for which Y&R has been known and for which it can credit 4 decades of success.

Bell isn’t any better. For over 10 years, it seems Bell doesn’t know what the heck to do with B&B other than replay the same love triangle plots over and over and over and over again. On Bell’s B&B, there appears to only be 20 people in California, who are all from one of 3 families, and they simply fall into bed with one another regardless of their history or past affairs with other relatives. This was interesting for the first 5 years or so but, now, it is beyond worn out. I’ve always thought that the obvious missing storyline on B&B concerned Brooke and her serious need for counseling: The show should address head on Brooke’s unhealthy need to always have a man in her life (even if it means stealing him from her own sister or daughter). It would be refreshing to watch Brooke completely reject a relationship and make a serious promise to herself to remain celebate for a while and “fix” her issues.

its all relative
all tv shows are down in viewers due to many factors, more competition, more channels than ever before, more ways to view shows such as internet etc.
all across the board tv, movies at cinemas , music sales are down, magazines and print have less readers etc. the genre is so spread out among many sources.

This is incredible!! The show has been on fire for the past few months, and I have been loving every single day. I cannot miss single day or else I’m very upset, and I could not say that about regimes of the past. This is the best regime and Y&R in nearly ten years’ time.

I believe there is much misinformation in the above comments. For instance, the networks cannot and do not include foreign markets in the AC Nielsen Ratings reported here for the United States.

Also, it goes without saying: quality doesn’t always translate to popularity.

That being said, statistics can be easily manipulated. While these 2 CBS shows are jumping for joy about increased viewership, if we compare these ratings to ratings received by soaps 20, 30, or 40 years ago, these current ratings would pale in comparison.

But, hey, they’re still on the air…

But James, the facts never got in Su000’s way before, why would they get in her way now?

Thanks Harry!

hey, you can buy Y&R stuff at CBS for one place.
There are Young and the Restless glasses, mugs, cute logo t-shirts, aprons and other collectibles that promote Y&R .. you can wear their advertisement of Y&R while in the produce aisle. lol
I don’t think , any soap, does it as well as ‘The Young and the Restless.’”

also-
IF one of those 30 countries is under USA broadcasting, it can be counted ..

Y&R has ”Sonny” 😉
aren’t all things possible with Sonny lol 🙂
Sony is a Japanese company. Sony corporation Of America,NY,US is US subsidiary of Sony Corporation headquartered in Tokyo.

I just threw that ^^^ in there because you seem to like to figure my stuff out 🙂 lol

Hi, James.
If you say so, then it must be. I will believe anything you say…I like you that much!!LOL.
To be honest, James? I never got into what goes on with ratings, or whatnot. I just watch and enjoy my soaps, praying they will stay on the air until the day I die. HaHa. Later.

Thank you, CeeCee!

I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to the ratings — and when it comes to a lot of things! But I do like your philosophy. Take care, Friend!

Have have to watch young and restless for 30 years 6 months ago stopped watching young & restless. I understand the TV is supposed to be entertaining but the violence in daytime TV is too much for me. I don’t like what the writers have done to all the characters in young and restless and I especially do not like the way they are representing someone who has bipolar disease, they should be more responsible and maybe do some research into how bipolar actually does affect a person. I can tell you from experience they do not act like Sharon case she was once such a popular character. The sad truth is everyone I talk to seems to feel the same way as I do every article I read people are stating the same socks and yet you keep telling us the ratings are going up I don’t know how that can be it’s too bad that you room setup amazing show. It seems Victor Newman can get away with everything never have to pay people like Adam or Sharon seem to get caught and suffer all the time and I think it’s time to get rid of Victor Newman his acting is ridiculous.

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

Published

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

Photo: JPI

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

Today’s Monday, July 13 episode of General Hospital marks it 16,000 episode to air on the ABC television network. It is a remarkable milestone. The previous television record was held by Guiding Light which clocked in at 15,762 episodes before it went off the air on CBS in 2009.

To mark the occasion, the cast, crew and creative team of General Hospital celebrated with a cake-cutting ceremony on the Prospect Studios lot in Los Angeles back on Monday, June 1, 2026.

It’s a milestone we couldn’t let pass by without taking some time to celebrate as a family (and, of course… eating some cake). 🍰 We hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did making it.”

WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON THE 16,000th Episode?

The 16,000th episode will feature Jason Morgan returning to the town of Port Charles, Anna and Valentin (James Patrick Stewart) reuniting, and a new surgeon, Dr. Tristan Roberts (Dean Geyer) joining the staff of ‘General Hospital.’

GENERAL HOSPITAL HOLDS SEVERAL RECORDS

Now in its 64th year, Emmy Award-winning daytime drama General Hospital is currently both the longest-running scripted American drama and the longest-running American soap opera currently in production.

General Hospital holds the record for the most Outstanding Daytime Drama award wins, taking home the prestigious Daytime Emmy Award a record 18 times. Will they do it again and make it 19 in 2026? Stay tuned for the 53rd annual Daytime Emmy nominations tomorrow on Tuesday, July 14 to find out if GH will be going for gold in the category, once again.

The ABC daytime drama series was created by Frank and Doris Hursley and premiered back on April 1, 1963. Frank Valentini is the current executive producer with Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten are the show’s co-head writers.

General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC and streams on Hulu.

What do you think of the new cast photo marking General Hospital’s 16000th episode? What do you think of the accomplishment to have that many episodes of a television show and its still thriving and kicking? Share your thoughts and congrats for everyone in front of the camera and behind the scenes on this milestone airing.
