CBS Daytime completed the 2014-2015 broadcast year once again at #1.  It marks the 29th consecutive year in a row for the network which has the strongest and healthiest line-up of programming in the day-part of any of its competitors.

Of major note for daytime drama fans; the just completed broadcast year delivered to The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful their best ratings numbers in years!

For Y&R, they averaged 5.21 million viewers, which is a +1% increase from a year ago and its largest audience since the 2009-10 television year. And for B&B, they averaged 3.94 million viewers, up +2% and the daytime drama’s largest audience since the 2005-06 television year.

Elsewhere in the line-up:  The Talk  topped one of its main competitorABC’s The View for the first time in women 25-54 (1.0/06 vs. 0.9/06) and tied for the first time in women 18-49 (0.7/05) demos while averaging 2.60 million viewers.  Let’s Make A Deal delivered stellar numbers, and The Price is Right still remaining the most watched show in daytime averaging 5.58 million viewers for the year.

So, what do you think about the tune-in increase for The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful?

Are Chuck Pratt (EP and head writer Y&R) and Brad Bell (EP and head writer B&B) bringing some of the best drama to daytime television in years, and in turn that is being reflected in viewership? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Phyllis’s imaginary friend “Fred” cracks me up.
I fully expected him to tell Phyllis that his late wife’s name was Ethel and her best friend’s name was Lucy.

WHAT DID YOU DO TO THIS SHOW SONY/CBS! Okay tried again today to watch the show. I had to stop. Then I went back later because I taped it. OMG it was so bad I just said, Self, This is so depressing and a waste of time! I deleted the show AGAIN! I cant. I will keep in touch with all the awesome soap fans I met thru all the years on social media who watch Y&R for 20 plus years like me . But I cant sit still to watch the show. God everything went down hill since all… Read more »

LIES! The show Y&R has never been this bad. All the stories just so bad. I really meant the worst writing I ever saw on any soap in all of my 40 years watching soaps. Please fire the writers that have destroyed Y&R BOOOOOOOOOOO

The ratings are probably internationally and they are when it was good like in the early 2000 but certainly not the worst writers in history jill f phelps and chuck pratt because i really dont like the show anymore sadly

I don’t understand how Y&R has so many viewers. Their key demos are HORRIBLE and have been for months now.

Y&R has more viewers internationally than in USA.
And yes, by whichever means CBS manages to throw in (some) international numbers.
CBS is a huge business, they have ways 😉

Hi, Su. I don’t keep up with ratings…domestic or otherwise. But, if what you say is true, that the number of viewers is greater abroad; then, I would think it’s because of the international intrigue; the dialogue and fashion offered by Y&R. GH has been serving the same meal for decades….mob stories upon mob stories. Inasmuch as I hate the Marco story; the fact that he was a foreigner, a charismatic, albeit malignant one, has international appeal. Then, there are the ladies’s clothes…accessories, shoes….Haute-Mode, through and through. Y& R is known for its display of sophisticated couture……for both sexes. It… Read more »

The soaps are rotten young and the restless stinks. the storys terrible . It must be pretty pathetic that they are trying to lie to people that this chuck pratt who never should get near a pen and paper can get ratings up ….. no no no the show yr is the worst bad awful boring very boring and all the couples have zero chemistry

CBS highly promotes their 2 soaps, BB and Y&R.
They highly promote their soaps internationally. (that is where many of the high numbers come from)
CBS has actual promoters, a promoting team for their soaps..

ABC does not promote.
The promoting of GH is done on twitter by Frank, he is the chief GH promoter.
ABC has promoted by showing of a GH clip usually around sweeps time but no real effort of promoting.

NBC; Days has a promoter and recently has been promoting with the turnover of Days.

Y&R was good today–it offered character driven plots and explored the sibling rivalry which exists between Ashley and Jack and Victoria and Nick.
I am also enjoying Sage freaking out and acting like Victor is the dingo who will take her baby.

That is very interesting, su000.
And with the 50th anniversary of Days there has been a ton of promotion and their ratings have improved, haven’t they? I remember years ago the commercials on ABC for “Love in the afternoon” and they would show clips from all the shows. Do they still do the soap stars at Disneyland or is that gone as well? I don’t think soaps are dead and hope not and wonder if maybe these new higher ratings will help and maybe ABC will promote General Hospital more??

Oh please, GH is promoted by EVERYONE. They have mags making excuses for the horror FV and RC did to GH. ABC uses it other shows like the View and the Chew to promote GH. Let’s not forget the game show that had GH actors on. DWTS also had GH actors. That online TV even twists the numbers to make it

Got cut off. Twist the ratings numbers to pimp GH. When GH ratings were high they were hailed the greatest then we find out they were never that high. It was an error. CBS deserves their number one and gets credit. GO CBS. Y&R and all their daytime ia great.

All the networks promote their daytime shows on their networks, at times, and then only daytime watchers see them. The soap mags have soap stuff but the soap fans buy them, read them. promoting on daytime to daytime viewers is promoting to fans already watching the soaps lol .. neither is promoting to get new viewers, the daytime soap watchers and daytime viewers are seeing the soap clips and most are already watching their soaps so not a great promotion for getting new viewers– and that is not promoting to get new viewers.. the Nielsen ratings had a glitch for… Read more »

hi Timmm.. I had recently read about CBS/Sonny promotions, I can not find them now. I did find this from the NY Times, it shows Sonny international promotes Y&R. It ”” Sonny”” not CBS who is doing the international promoting; GLOBAL APPEAL PAVES THE WAY FOR INTERNATIONAL VERSIONS Not every show translates well abroad, but the classic storytelling that has made “The Young and the Restless” a success at home for 35 years has made it an international hit seen in more than 30 countries. “It’s a show that works very well all around the world,” says Steve Kent, senior… Read more »

And in fact the real reason for the highest number of viewers is because they deserve it. The other two networks simply cannot compete with the quality and consistency of good writing and production. The other two networks are lacking overall in quality television give or take a few shows.

Liam

Quality is quite subjective to each individual viewer. I, for one, have never considered Y&R and B&B to embody the quality that you speak of. I believe the one thing that has helped Y&R (and subsequently B&B) all these years was the Price is Right lead-in and the fact that in many markets, Y&R did not have any direct competition in that time slot.

MF…Can you show year ratings for GH? Figure there will be a dip because of Fluke, but hoping for a rise this coming year with the new/old writer reboot which I gather really goes into effect in October. Looking forward to that. Hope they deliver.

MY opinion is if the network wants a soap on the air, its on the air. These ratings are manufactured. Although Y&R is better in 2015 than 2014, it still sucks! Case in point, Phyllis meets a strange man in the deep woods and has no qualms about entering his camper, which is also in the deep woods. Phyllis was basically raped by Marco and she is off in the woods skipping around picking flowers and having coffee with a “Fisherman!” Marissa’s husband shows up and gets more screen time than some of the vets get in 6 months. Bravo Tom! Great post! And have you noticed that Neil manages to be dull even when he’s suffering from psychosis? The only time he was interesting is when he was coupled with the spirited, slightly nutty Dru. She took the best part of himself with her. Being an alcoholic, being struck blind and being betrayed by his wife and son failed to make Neil interesting. Now they are trying to make him interesting by making him bat shit crazy and it ain’t working! the promotion part for these soaps are big and it is true that they have exported themselves well internationally . Bold , Days , Young are the soaps that are the most broadcast internationally . they screen in France , Europe and in Australia but not only . in other countries too. GH is no longer broadcast internatonally and the promotion of it is weak . With Young and Bold i feel that over the past 5 or 10 years a new audience has tuned in , probably a younger one who didn’t see the golden era of these soaps… Read more »

“Are Chuck Pratt (EP and head writer Y&R) and Brad Bell (EP and head writer B&B) bringing some of the best drama to daytime television in years, and in turn that is being reflected in viewership?” Answer to an easy question: NO These ratings, even if an increase, are HORRIBLE from a historic perspective. I strongly suspect that, 20 years ago, these type of ratings would mean one thing: CANCELLATION. It is a sad comment about the current state of the overall soap industry that these historically mediocre ratings are touted as a success due to a slight uptick and… Read more »

its all relative
all tv shows are down in viewers due to many factors, more competition, more channels than ever before, more ways to view shows such as internet etc.
all across the board tv, movies at cinemas , music sales are down, magazines and print have less readers etc. the genre is so spread out among many sources.

This is incredible!! The show has been on fire for the past few months, and I have been loving every single day. I cannot miss single day or else I’m very upset, and I could not say that about regimes of the past. This is the best regime and Y&R in nearly ten years’ time.

I believe there is much misinformation in the above comments. For instance, the networks cannot and do not include foreign markets in the AC Nielsen Ratings reported here for the United States.

Also, it goes without saying: quality doesn’t always translate to popularity.

That being said, statistics can be easily manipulated. While these 2 CBS shows are jumping for joy about increased viewership, if we compare these ratings to ratings received by soaps 20, 30, or 40 years ago, these current ratings would pale in comparison.

But, hey, they’re still on the air…

Have have to watch young and restless for 30 years 6 months ago stopped watching young & restless. I understand the TV is supposed to be entertaining but the violence in daytime TV is too much for me. I don’t like what the writers have done to all the characters in young and restless and I especially do not like the way they are representing someone who has bipolar disease, they should be more responsible and maybe do some research into how bipolar actually does affect a person. ‘The View’s’ Whoopi Goldberg Tells Audience to Stop ‘Booing’ Republican Senator Tim Scott

During a bizarre couple of segments of Monday’s episode of The View, Republican presidential candidate, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, was the special guest.

The conversation between the conservative politician and The View co-hosts, Whoopi Goldberg, Sunny Hostin and Ana Navarro took some uncomfortable and tense turns.

At one point, Goldberg posed the question to Scott, as to why the Republican Party was trying to “stop the progression that people are making.” Scott started answering and said that his political party was doing a “fabulous job at making progress” with social issues. Hostin  asked him to elaborate on that point.  It was then, that the senator turned his back to Goldberg, which promoted Whoopi to interject “That was me talking to you …. shall I come next to her?”

Goldberg then stood next to Hostin as Scott continued to face away from the other co-hosts and address the two.  After proving her point, Whoopi went back to her seat a The View table.

Courtesy/ABC

Then, production signaled Goldberg to toss to break, but Scott was continue to speak.  So instead of interrupting him, someone else from the production staff walked on camera and told Scott they were going to break.

However, when the show returned, and Ana Navarro asked her question, if the senator thought the ‘Republican Party had gone too far’ in introducing legislature against the LGBTQ+ community, including Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill, plus Floria governor and Republican presidential candidate, Ron DeSantis’ feud with Disney, Scott’s response drew ire from some in the live audience with many booing the guest.

Next, Goldberg shut down the ‘boos” scolding the audience with: “Not here. I’m sorry sir. Do not ‘boo’. This is The View. We accept … we don’t have to believe everything people say, but you cannot “boo” people here, please. You cannot do it.”

Watch the ‘daytime drama’ on The View below, and then let us know what you thought of Tim Scott’s appearance on the ABC daytime talk show via the comment section.

Walt Willey Brings All My Children’s Jackson Montgomery to General Hospital

Look for another legal eagle character from a former ABC soap opera to pop up on General Hospital!

News today out of Soap Opera Digest has that none other than Walt Willey set to reprise his role as All My Children’s Jackson Montgomery on upcoming episodes of GH in July.

Willey played Erica Kane’s (Susan Lucci) love interest and the Pine Valley lawyer from 1987 through to till ABC’s cancellation of the series back in 2011.  The actor previously crossed-over to another soap opera in 1996, when he played Jack on ABC’s The City.

Photo: ABC

Taking to his Facebook account, Walt confirmed the news on his appearances on GH: “Hey Folks… Been sitting on this one for a while but now I’ve been given the clearance to announce that “Jackson Montgomery” is visiting Port Charles! I’ll be doing a few episodes of General Hospital, due to air mid July. So excited to reprise my character and see and work with old friends! I’ll keep you posted on any details. “Jackson” in Port Charles…who would have thought it? Let me, and ABC, know what you think about it!”

Could Jack’s sudden arrival in Port Charles have to do with the SEC and the trouble that Carly (Laura Wright) and Drew (Cameron Mathison) find themselves in?   Will AMC fans get to see Cameron Mathison and Willey share scenes together again?  Mathison played Ryan Lavery on the beloved former soap opera … or might Jack go up against Martin Grey in a GH legal battle, so Michael E. Knight and Willey could share scenes together again since their AMC days?

So, excited to see Walt on General Hospital? What do you think brings Jack to Port Charles? Weigh-in below and stay tuned.
