CONFIRMED: Jason Thompson Is Y&R's New Billy Abbott!

The rumors turned out to be true!  In a move that will reunite five-time Daytime Emmy nominee Jason Thompson (Ex-Patrick, GH) with the executive producer who gave him his soap start at GH, Jill Farren Phelps,Thompson is indeed heading to Genoa City as the new Billy Abbott at The Young and the Restless!

The news was broke exclusively this afternoon by EW.com which noted that Jason will begin airing in January as the new Billy following the departure of Burgess Jenkins in the role.  Jenkins recently revealed he is done at the number one soap opera.

In a statement, Jill Farren Phelps related her excitement on bringing Jason to Y&R: “I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to work with Jason again. He’s an exceptional actor and a wonderful human being. He will bring so much to the character and we’re thrilled to welcome him to The Young and Restless family.”

CBS Daytime Sr. VP Angelica McDaniel offered up: “Jason Thompson is an incredibly gifted actor and we are thrilled to welcome him.  Playing the pivotal role of Billy Abbott, Jason joins the talented cast of The Young and the Restless as the show celebrates an unprecedented 27 consecutive years as daytime’s No. 1 drama.”

Thompson who wrapped his run as GH’s Patrick told Soap Opera Digest:  “There are a lot of guys who have played this character and one of them did it for a number of years, Billy Miller (Currently, GH’s Jason]. I’ve become really friendly with Billy and we’ve had a couple conversations about it and he was nothing but gracious to me… It’s going to be hard to fill his shoes.”

So, what do you think of the news that Jason Thompson is Y&R’s new Billy Abbott?  Is GH’s loss Y&R’s big gain?  Share your thoughts on this confirmed casting news in the comment section below!

To me, he’s not visually right for the role of Billy Abbott. I love Jason as an actor, and while I am not thrilled with the role he’s taking claim of, I will support him and enjoy seeing him grow as an actor in a brand-new role. After ten years as one character, this will be an adjustment, not only for Jason but for audiences, as well.

I like the actor but I agree that he is not visually right for the role. I seem to be in the minority but I really liked Burgess’ portrayal of Billy. I love his deadpan delivery of insults to Victor.

I loved Burgess before he became Billy, and I grew to really love him as Billy. But I get that he’s deciding to be with his family right now.

No you’re not in the minority, I see more that don’t think he’s a good fit than do. I don’t know the actor, but just looking at his pictures, that is not Billy Abbott.
They should just scrap the role of Billy & Kyle, they can’t seem to get the right fit for either role. They had it once with Billy Miller, but that’s gone by the wayside, probably never to return.

Let’s see you’re not visually right for a made up tv character in a made up town on daytime tv. No adjustment needed. .glad. BJ is gone abs talent is taking over. .just wear a blind fold during his scenes lol

You’re missing the point…. Jason, to me, does not fit the vision of who I believe Billy Abbott to look like. Has zero to do with Jason’s looks themselves.

Hey, dav, I agree with Scott. I had said the same thing weeks ago, when it was first rumored that Thompson would assume the role of Billy A. In fact, I did not even take the rumors swirling around, seriously. I said as much to Timmm, adding that Thompson would not fit in with the rest of the Abbots….not because of his looks ( he is good-looking, afterall), but because of our image of what Billy A should look like. I went as far as to say that I could not picture Thompson as a blonde. Lol. Nonetheless, things will… Read more »

I do not like the new Billy on the Young and the Restless,

This guy is not Billy Abbot. When he comes on i fast foward thru. He has no idea how to be Billy. The first was Billy-the one who left when Adam did. 2nd was ok, but this one is not right.
I like the new Adam.

I simply ADORE ” new” Billy Abbott. He brings so much to the role of Billy:
incredible good looks ( I like his dark good looks ) , a million dollar smile,
intelligence, good heart, sensitivity and downright wonderful rapport with the
rest of the cast of ” The Young and the Restless”. Jason is a very gifted
actor as well. He portrays Billy Abbott so well that he is not playing Billy,
he IS Billy.

I cannot believe this!!!!!! This is fantastic news!!! I sincerely hope AH doesn’t drain the life out of him with her dreadful acting. He will be on fire with Chelsea. Can’t wait to see how this plays out!! Only downside is this talented actor coming aboard and being under chuck Pratt’s SUPER shallow writing. YR will not do him justice. I knew this would end up happening. No doubt he will bring the required depth to the role but it is sincerely time to find out who really killed Delia. Beyond time. Hi, Richard….

You know what, Richard? I think I may have spoken too soon. As su pointed out, soaps are fickle and their characters even more volatile. Thus, I seem to sense a revival of something between Adam and Sage. In other words, if anything comes out of that, then Billy and Chelsea may very well rekindle what they had.
Billy will get into some kind of accident (crash?), ……hmmmmm, plastic surgery? Facial reconstruction?

Jason is a great actor… but he looks nothing like an Abbott! Remember back when recasts at least TRIED to look like the actor they were replacing? In the 80s/90s, RKK at least somewhat resembled PR (B0) on Days. When Melissa Reeves left Days and was replaced by Stephanie Cameron, they looked like sisters. I could go on, but you guys get the point! I’m sure he’ll find chemistry with the cast, especially if they try to reconnect Dylan & Billy’s friendship that was started with Miller & Burton.

The main reason I’m not pleased with Thompson’s departure is because there is no longer one major GH character that is a doctor – RIDICULOUS for a show based around a hospital. I guess it’s very telling that GH has concentrated for too long on stuff outside the hospital when none of the 2nd generation cast has the education or knowledge to realistically work inside a hospital other than Elizabeth Webber. How pathetic is that? Not one Spencer, Quartermaine, or Cassadine under the age of 50 has any medical training. Only the supporting and barely recurring characters have connections to… Read more »

@Tony – You proved my point. “Lucas Jones” = supporting & barely recurring character. Doctors & nurses are no longer considered major players on GH. All but 2 of the major roles are held by criminals, their partners/wife-of-the-season, their children, their henchmen & their lawyers.

He could pull it off–he can channel that Billy Abbott energy.
Remember when he first came to GH as Dr Patrick Drake? Aside from being a brilliant young surgeon, he was also an arrogant playboy. Then he got married and subsequently, Robin left, Sparkle Pony spread her fairy dust, Sam wouldn’t stop muttering “Jason.” while in his presence, and Patrick was rendered impotent.

No he decided to leave the show. According to him it’s because of the commute and draining story that exhausted him

Ashleigh

He said he was quitting because the commute was hard, I think his home is in the east coast if I remember correctly, and it was emotionally draining because he has an 8 year old daughter that made the Delia storyline real for him. I’m totally paraphrasing, but that was the jist that I got out of his comments.

He released a statement saying he was leaving because the commute to his home on the East coast was too much.

Coincidentally that break occurred just before Jason started playing Patrick, so I missed the whole “Scrubs” story. I came back for GH’s 50th and have been watching the past 2 1/2 years. Honestly, the character of Patrick hasn’t had much to do in the 2 1/2 years I’ve been watching. His story with Sabrina was a waste. And clearly Sam will be involved in the Jason story. I agree, pairing him with Robin destroyed the character of Patrick. I loved his early time on GH, and to be honest I never really felt any chemistry between he and KM, so I didn’t get the whole “scrubs” thing anyway.

You are so correct. I feel better about Jason. He can play a good Billy Abbott with his own flair. I was just entertained delightfully by those earlier December 2005 Patrick (arrogant and playboy) and Robin YouTube videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Tr4gt9W_J4

Nothing against Thompson, but there are other roles they could have picked for him and they decide to make him play the worst character on the show. If it was my choice, I would have made Thompson play Adam Newman and say that Hartley’s Adam was an imposter that was brainwashed by Adam so he can avoid going to jail and then have… Read more »

this is so stupid, i would have respect for him if he was pursuing other work on primetime or movies, but to go to another soap to pay a character thats been played by who knows how many is so pointless, if he left gh because of storyline, it doesn’t make sense why he would join a show equally as crowded, its just suspect, its not like the billy role is a coveted role in soaps, and its not like he needs to make a mark in daytime, cause he already has, so for him to jump ship, i will… Read more »

Just my opinion I am an avid fan and faithful viewer of both GH & Y&R, I think Jason Thompson is a great actor however nobody can fill Billy Millers shoes, and the remaining shows should stop with using the same actors over and over in their soap hopping games, it’s exactly the same as recycled writers in order for these soaps to survive bring in fresh talent on & behind the screens.

He is so far off from who Billy is!
His physical appearance, his seriousness…
but who knows, actually. I hope it can
somehow work. Been through too many

Good for him and I hope he does well but I honestly think that Greg Vaughn would have been a better choice. I don’t see any chemistry with Amelia Heinle (but I could be wrong since they have not even aired together yet). I think he will have chemistry with all the Abbott’s and Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan). I honestly don’t watch Y&R, so I don’t care that much (but I know the actors and characters).

That was actually my thought too, Brian, when I heard that Greg Vaughn was leaving Days: he’d be a good choice to play Billy. (Though I don’t know how he feels about JFP; she was the EP for General Hospital when the show rather unceremoniously dumped GV for Jonathan Jackson, and I don’t know whether he holds her responsible or not.) It might have been smarter to go that route and find another character for Jason Thompson to play. I guess we’ll see how well this works out.

whoa! I was sorta bored, time to waste,, I read some of the Y&R boards, the JT threads of him playing Billy Abbott.. WOW! most all posted he is a bad replacement, he is not right to be an Abbott, it was another bad casting, he;s way too dark for an Abbott, he is not right for the role, etc etc on it went.. Not many were happy or welcoming with JT coming on as Billy.. I was surprised to read that stuff, really surprised .. I really hope he will be accepted, he is an awesome actor!! Yeah, everyone is saying he doesn’t look like an Abbott and he is too serious but the majority like him enough to want it to work and want to give him a chance. Remember how everyone swore to hate Michael Muhney’s replacement? We soap fans are a fickle bunch. I really hope it works. I wonder how many peope are placing bets right now though.

I agree the previous Billys have all been similar in look and I liked that but I think that JT will fit in nicely with Jack and Ashley who are very hip and sophisticated in their looks.

Maybe the sceptics were Y&R loyalists who never watched GH and never saw the JT potential. And since when is hair color a requirement for the smorgasbord lineage in soaps.

see this is the thing with some soap fans they don’t even give new actors a chance to be on their screen before they start with the negativity which is totally wrong…………………
i watch all four remaining soaps & read the message boards & i see this all the time and that really ticks me off – after one day with a new actor/actress in a role they start posting comments like he/she has got to go…………….unbelievable!!!

I think you may be reading too much into the comments. I’m not sure people who are saying they don’t really see JT in the role are saying they can’t be persuaded. I’m certainly not. He’s extremely talented. He may pull it off. I will definitely give him a chance. But it’s entirely possible to miscast even a very talented actor, and those of us who have watched soaps for a while have seen it happen often enough to be skeptical sometimes when we hear about casting decisions that seem ill advised. (And at the risk of repeating myself: JFP… Read more »

Welcome back to daytime Jason Thompson, I know you will do a wonderful job as the new Billy boy lol. General Hospital are idiots for letting Jason walk away, his contract was up and his storyline went down hill. Good for the Young and The Restless in signing Jason Thompson right away. The man can act and he was robbed again for a Daytime Emmy on GH. Yes he was nominated again and lost. What a joke. The Daytime emmys are a joke. The same people win, over and over.

I can say this much: thank goodness Burgess is out. Please do not castigate me with words. But this guy did nothing for the role of Billy Abbott. All he did was mope and whine. I was actually happy with David Tom; but, when Miller assumed the role, I was ecstatic. Billy Miller nailed the character ….the good, the bad, and the ugly. But, this is not about Miller. I am confident that Jason will hone the character into the Billy Abbot we all seek, in his own special way. I would also like to say that I admire Thompson’s… Read more »

Well, as I stated previously, he doesnt look like an Abbott BUT Jason is extremely talented and he will hold his own with Peter, Eileen and Eric. Plus, I can see him and Amelia having good chemistry. But don’t you think he could pass for the Foster side of the family? I mean he does look more like Jill than any of the other Billy’s– reminds me a bit of Jill’s brother Greg- so maybe there isn’t an Abbott resemblance, but he is only half Abbott so like you I am willing to give this a shot. Yet honestly they better write for the character, because having a good actor is only half of the equation, you need to give the actor the words that will make the character shine.

MARY! What an amazing comment! Your right, we tend to look at the Abbotts and never the Foster side. Yes he could easily be Jill’s son. However, where the hell has Jill been? Maybe this will bring her back to the show more often? I am excited to see how this pans out and once again, excellent point Mary!

I think what I’m most excited for are his scenes with the great Peter Bergman, Christian LeBlanc, Jess Walton, Eileen Davidson, Eric Braeden, Melody Thomas Scott and all the other greats. Josh Swickard and Laura Wright Talk GH’s 60th Anniversary, Nurses’ Ball & The Loss of Beloved Colleagues

Today, we celebrate the incredible milestone of ABC’s General Hospital officially turning 60-years-old.  The soap debuted on this day on April 1,1963.

Two of the series current stars: Josh Swickard (Chase) and Laura Wright (Carly) chatted with Michael Fairman earlier this week for a conversation on You Tube’s Michael Fairman Channel.

Photo: ABC

Josh and Laura share what it has meant to be part of such an iconic television show, plus the two actors recall their GH  ‘audition’ stories, and who took them under their wing when they came to the GH set for the first time.

Photo: ABC

In addition, with the GH Nurses’ Ball returning next week, Josh teases what number he might sing when Chase takes the Nurses’ Ball stage, and if Chase will repair his relationship with Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) during the episodes.

Photo: LauraWrightIG

Laura looks into what the future of Carly’s relationship with Drew (Cameron Mathison) might look like, and both actors express their sadness on the tragic and sudden death of their beloved producer, Nneka Garland, earlier in the week, as well as the recent passing of cast member Sonya Eddy (Epiphany) and the tribute episode that GH just aired in her honor.

You can watch the full interview with Josh and Laura below.

Now, let us know, are you rooting for Chase and Brook Lynn to get back together during the Nurses’ Ball? Are you rooting for Carly and Drew to stay together, or would you want Carly back with Sonny?  Let us know in the comment section.

GH’s Maurice Benard Gets Emotional During Surprise Family Reunion

Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos, General Hospital) was a guest today on the ABC syndicated-talker, Tamron Hall.  The three-time Daytime Emmy-winning star was on the show to promote GH’s 60th anniversary, which is on April 1st, while the series celebrates next week with the return of the Nurses’ Ball.

During his segment, Tamron surprised Maurice with an emotional reunion with his daughter Heather who has been in the U.S. Air Force on the east coast.  Benard had not seen her since October of last year.

Tamron’s set-up of the Benard surprise happened when she discussed his family and in particular, his daughter, Heather Andresen, who is his wife Paula Benard’s half-sister.  Hall said when her picture came on the screen, “This is her. You haven’t seen her in awhile.” But, Benard cut her off knowing exactly what was coming next and said, “Oh, don’t do that.”

Maurice legally adopted Heather when she was 15. So when Hall said, “You’re not the only one who made a special trip today. She wanted to be here … because I know it was rough getting on that plane and coming here,” Maurice was struggling to hold it together.

Tamron was referencing Maurice’s fear of flying, and in particular flying solo, which is what he had to do for this publicity tour in New York.  Next, Tamron brought out, “Airman First Class Heather Andresen.”

Benard and Heather embraced, as Maurice continued to get emotional and told Heather how proud of her he was.

You can watch the very touching moment below.

Then let us know, what did you think of Tamron’s surprise for Maurice? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Friends, Loved Ones and Colleagues Gather to Mourn the Loss of Epiphany

There is a connection between the audience, the actors, and the characters they play in the soap opera genre that is so unique, that no other form of entertainment has it.  What we have seen play out leading to the highly-anticipated tribute episode for the late Sonya Eddy (Epiphany, GH) is the perfect example.

Here on this site, when we posted items and previews on this upcoming episode, fans were ready to also mourn the loss of the character and the actress they loved. Many of the GH cast already shared that being on the set the day of the taping of this tribute to Sonya was cathartic, real and raw as they were also honoring and mourning their beloved co-star.

Photo: ABC

If you watched yesterday’s episode of GH, you could see the utmost care that was taken by the GH writing team, who wrote a beautiful script and send-off.  We are sure, many of you reached for the hankies throughout, and well you should, it was extraordinarily touching.

When we start, Port Charles residents are already dressed and heading to Epiphany’s memorial service, headed up by Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) at the GH chapel. Elizabeth is uptight, yet on the verge of breaking down over the loss of her dearest friend and champion. Liz tells Finn (Michael Easton) that she believes Epiphany was disappointed with her in the end for the whole Esme and Nikolas mess that she was a part of.  She so wishes she could have made it right with her before she died. It is Liz’s hope that this memorial is the perfect way to make it up to her mentor and friend.

One of the key questions that everyone wanted answers to was finding out just how did the writers decide to kill-off Epiphany. We learned much of the back-story from special guest, Yvette Nicole Brown, who was excellent as the woman Epiphany saved before her untimely death. Making this even more emotional was the fact that in real-life, Yvette was one of Sonya Eddy’s closest friends.

The woman reveals to Liz and Finn that her car crashed into an electrical pole. Epiphany happened to be driving by and ran out to save her life.  She did so successfully, but when the woman asked for an update on Epiphany, she learned that she collapsed at the scene from smoke inhalation, but as Elizabeth put together, Epiphany had a heart attack, because she had a pre-existing heart condition.

Photo: ABV

Elsewhere, Anna (Finola Hughes) is mourning Epiphany and cannot attend the memorial because she is currently tucked away at the safe house. However, she gets a surprise visitor! Emma Drake (Brooklyn Rae Silzer) has come back to Port Charles to attend the memorial and gives her grandmother the biggest of hugs.  Emma is attending in place of her parents, Patrick and Robin, who couldn’t get away from their doctor duties to fly back to town in time.

Next, we learn Diane Miller (Carolyn Hennesy) is the executor of Epiphany’s will.  She seeks out the former head nurse’s mortal enemy, Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati), with some written instructions to be handled following the memorial service.

Photo: ABC

Meanwhile, several returns helped round out Epiphany’s history including: Marc Anthony Samuel as Nurse Felix, and Drew Cheetwood as her ex-boyfriend, Milo. In fact, Drew was very heart-tugging in scenes with Maurice Benard (Sonny).

Photo: ABC

Marshall (Robert Gossett) is blaming himself for Epiphany’s death telling Portia (Brooke Kerr) and Curtis (Donnell Turner) that if he hadn’t pushed her to go after her dreams as a doctor, maybe her life would have been saved.  Portia tells him that’s nonsense, he actually helped Epiphany achieve her goal.

Photo: ABC

When it’s time for the memorial, it starts with Elizabeth, and one by one people get up and speak on Epiphany including: Deanna (Dionni Michelle Collins), Portia, Sonny, Carly (Laura Wright) and others. Throughout, we get flashbacks of how the she impacted their lives.  At the end of the service, Diane gets up and tells everyone Epiphany has asked that everyone go to the roof following the memorial.  Once on the GH rooftop, Diane reads a letter from Epiphany that she wants no more tears and to be celebrated.  Cue the fireworks, that were set off and lit by none other than Liesl! Epiphany’s voice is heard singing her signature Nurses Ball song, “You’re Not Alone” as everyone takes a moment to reflect and honor her, including Anna alone at the safe house watching the fireworks in the sky.

Photo: ABC

At the end of the episode, Elizabeth, who has returned to the GH chapel, receives a phone call from Monica (and we hear Leslie Charleson’s voice).  Monica tells her she received a glowing letter of recommendation from Epiphany a few days ago and reads it aloud to her. Liz learns that Pif has suggested to the GH hospital board that despite the mistakes she had made, that Liz become the head nurse at the hospital.  Monica tells her she plans on taking this to the board. Elizabeth is overcome in a beautifully-played moment by Becky Herbst.

Photo: ABC

The conclusion came too soon for us as we knew we had to say goodbye to our friend, Sonya, who was so memorable as the beloved Epiphany. A series of flashbacks, reminding us why we fell in love with the tough-as-nails GH nurse in the first place, began to play. Later, we see that Epiphany has joined the GH wall of remembrance for those revered doctors and nurses we have lost.

This was definitely a labor of love for the production, the writers, the crew, and the cast and it showed in the final product.  All we can say is … we have always loved Epiphany, and GH will never be the same without the presence of Sonya Eddy.

Now, share your thoughts on the Sonya Eddy tribute episode in the comment section below.
