Days Of Our Lives
DAYS OF OUR LIVES: Alison Sweeney and Carson Boatman Deliver the ‘Power Performances of the Week’
Alison Sweeney’s (Sami Brady) return this week to Peacock‘s Days of our Lives was well worth the wait, because in her emotional scenes opposite Carson Boatman (Johnny DiMera), the show delved into Sami’s past and tried to tie together many of the events that happened in her life at a young age and how it affected her choices and ultimately her contentious relationship and her love for EJ DiMera (Dan Feuerriegel).
While there were too many Sami Brady plots to detail over decades, the writers which included Jamey Giddens and Ron Carlivati (both of whom are now at Beyond the Gates), who were still writing DAYS at that time, found a way for Sami to have to confess to her son, Johnny some of her sins, and some of the darkest parts of her past on the Friday, April 11th episode.
And we have to say, while Sweeney had most all of the dialogue, as they say acting is reacting, Carson Boatman was extremely touching as tears streamed down his face listening what had shaped his mother. First, Sami reveals she has actually been in therapy and feels it has been helping her in an effort to confront some of her behavior patterns and why she does and what she does.

Then, Sami informs her son how her childhood was ripped away from her, and how she was sexually assaulted as a teenager by Alan Harris, (this is after Johnny brings up her being raped by Arnold Feniger as played by Galen Gering. Sami also explains how her parents were gone thanks to the machinations of Stefano DiMera and then later how she witnessed Marlena (Deidre Hall) having sex on a table with John Black (the late Drake Hogestyn) realizing her mother was having an affair with John instead of being faithful to Roman. (Of course, that was all complicated because John for a long time thought he was “Roman” and so did Marlena!)
Sami even admits to Johnny how she drugged Austin (Patrick Muldoon) to get him away from her sister Carrie (Christie Clark), and that she is also guilty of basically, rape. Poor Johnny is getting more than he bargained for hearing about his mother’s often heinous past. Sami showed her pain and her shame for her actions, and also spoke on the actions of others perpetrated on her; leaving Johnny with his heart-aching, because he loves his mother so much.

When Sami finally addressed the night that EJ forced himself on her, which in turn created Johnny, she also admitted that her relationship with his father always had fire and was very complicated. But in the end, she loves his dad, probably more than any other man.
We think praise should be also be given to a soap who resists temptation to have others enter the scene and distract from it. In this scenario, even when the show cut to another story, when they came back, they finished out the mother/son scenes completely.
In a week that featured some excellent performances on the soaps, DAYS Alison Sweeney and Carson Boatman really hit a home run together with this episode and these scenes. Therefore, they are Michael Fairman TV’s choice for the Power Performances of the Week.
Now let us know, what did you think of the scenes between Sami and Johnny? Did you grab for the hankies? Do you think the writers made a dent in the audience finally having more understanding of why Sami Brady does the things she does? Share your thoughts in the comment section.
The best thing I’ve seen on DAYS in a long time. So overdue for this character. Emmy worthy for sure
Well done keep up the good work
The scenes between Alison and Carson were so touching and real. When I found out that Alison was coming back, I first thought it was for storyline with John’s passing. Sami’s past has been complicated but Ron and Jamey touched on the beginning, middle and present of Sami’s pattern with men. Well written. That being said, please no Sami/Rafe pairing. Alison and Galen have great chemistry, but Sami is not here for that long.
Sami and Rafe belong together
Agreed!!! This was an excellent episode!!! Way to go to these two they did amazing emotional work!!
When does the new writer stuff start?
April 23rd
Alison Sweeney brought it and Carson was great as well Remember Ron haters he wrote this episode
Well it wasn’t so much a case writing new material with this story but rather re-telling an old story from a couple decades back.
Credit where it’s due, ReRon did seem to recall the history correctly from how this Devil remembers it. That’s more than you can say about the current writing team over at General Hospital.
It’s too bad they couldn’t have used flashbacks but of course that was a whole different Elvis back in those days.
This was such a great discussion between mom and son. It was so realistic and both did a great job. Very touching and it makes you realize how this is so real in the world
