Days of our Lives’ Suzanne Rogers on the Evolution of Maggie: “She Knows Who She Is Now, and She’s Not Relying on Anyone to Make Her Whole”

Days of our Lives enduring Maggie Simmons Horton Kiriakis has certainly changed through years, except she has always kept that loving and giving heart. Now her portrayer, Daytime Emmy winner, Suzanne Rogers, has been featured in a new Instagram post talking about her Salem character through the years.

As part of a series celebrating the women of Days of our Lives during Women’s History Month, Ultimately, Suzanne shares that Maggie is now a woman of today.  She began referencing Maggie’s beginnings on the show back in 1973: “I came on the show as a cripple on crutches. They wouldn’t let me use the wheelchair. They made me do the crutches. I think it was kind of ahead of its time because no one had kind of experienced that or seen that.”

After meeting amnesiac Marty Hanson, (who was attorney, Mickey Horton) her life changed, “She ran a household on the crutches and she got finally an operation then she started walking. She has grown because she was married to a lawyer. She kind of was in the background and didn’t have a way to speak for herself. He was the man of the house, but then, when he passed away, she became her own person.”

When Mickey passed no one including Maggie thought she would find a second love in her lifetime and she did with Greek tycoon, Victor Kiriakis.  However Victor passed away (after John Aniston died in real life), setting Maggie up to once again be single and on her own as a business woman. Enter Konstantin (John Kapelos)! Beware, Maggie!

Summing up where Maggie has evolved to Rogers surmised, “I think that that’s what’s going on today. I think women are in the workplace, they’re out there, they’re showing they have brains, not just beauty, but they have brains. People are taking them seriously. So, I think my character has grown. She’s owned two restaurants and she was the CEO of Titan. She knows who she is now, and she’s not relying on anyone to make her whole. She is who she is, and I think that’s important for all of us.”

Maggie’s had her moments, but ReRon has really dumbed her down since Victor died. She should have recognized Konstipated for the con man he is months ago. And when everybody from Steve & John to her own daughter Sarah has told her to get rid of this fool, she’s not listening.

At least she had the Baby Victoria being Xander’s kid figured out ahead of time though, so I’ll give her credit for that one.

Ron hasn’t written most of the Konstantin story since he was exposed and agreed to leave town, IIRC. The scabs have been writing since the new year and their scripts will continue to air until June or so, I believe.

Everything that’s happened since the holidays is the scabs. Unlike GH, which shone in new ways during the strike (leading to a headwriter change), DAYS has been hit or miss. Ron is always amazing when he joins a show, full of fresh ideas and excitement about where he wants to go. It often hits a lull after a few years (but OLTL showed us it can revv back up, too), so I’m excited to see what he does when he returns after a six-month break, having to pick up wherever the scabs took him.

Judging by your nickname for him, you may disagree, and that’s fine. But I’m excited.

I have LOVED the beautiful evolution of Maggie over the years because I too have evolved! Like Maggie, I was the quiet dutiful housewife who has evolved for the better! Not that I didn’t love cooking, cleaning and raising a family. However, I love who I am in my life now. My husband of 38 years and I are a better team. My husband is technologically challenged while I on the other hand am technologically savvy. I became a self-taught web developer in 2003, which is actually amazing, due to having dyscalculia (math dyslexia). I am retired now, enjoying traveling and working along side with my husband. I am so excited to see what new adventures Maggie will have as a single woman!!! She had two wonderful marriages, it’s time to give her a break! Let her have relationships from time to time, as long as there is chemistry between the actors! And for the love of Maggie, give her a younger man!!! She deserves better! Woot woot! She has buried two husband, ENOUGH! I know Maggie will eventually rise to the challenge of Constantine! And if the writers have her character do something out of character, it is on THEM! Bless dear Suzanne Rogers for making the best of some of the storylines written for Maggie! Keep making your own Magic ROCKING the screen Suzanne!

DAYS Lauren Koslow Temporarily Fills-In for Jess Walton as ‘The Young and the Restless’ Jill Abbott

In a ironic twist, Lauren Koslow, who currently plays Kate Roberts on Days of Our Lives is returning to The Young and the Restless to play Jill Abbott while temporarily filling in for Jess Walton. Koslow will appear for five episodes beginning on Thursday, June 25.

Koslow first appeared on The Young and the Restless back in 1984 in what was her first soap opera role when she was cast as Lindsey Wells. Now, she returns decades later subbing for Walton, who due to a scheduling conflict, was was unable to travel to Los Angeles when the storyline called for Jill. The Emmy-winning Walton has played the Jill since 1987 and went on recurring status with the show in 2012. Jess also left Los Angeles to reside in Oregon in 2011.

Making this all the richer was the original Jill played by Brenda Dickson, often shared scenes with Koslow’s Y&R character. Lauren played Lindsey Wells until 1986, before moving over to The Bold and the Beautiful as Margo Lynley. Koslow was B&B’s Margo from 1987–1992, and again in 2002. Then, in 1996, she was cast on Days of Our Lives as Kate Roberts, replacing Deborah Adair, and she has been in Salem ever since. But there’s still another another twist to this casting history. Y&R viewers recall Deborah Adair also played Jill, after Brenda Dickson left in 1980, and following a brief stint by Bond Gideon, before heading to DAYS to originate the role of Kate.

THE DAYS AND Y&R CONNECTION

As soap fans know, Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless are both part of Sony. Y&R is produced by Bell Dramatic Serial Company in association with Sony Pictures Television, while DAYS is owned by Corday Productions and distributed by Sony.

So, having Koslow visit The Young and the Restless to fill in for Jess Walton has nothing to do with her continued role of Kate on DAYS. In fact, a rep for the show shared that her upcoming appearance on Y&R, “does not affect her status with the show in any way.” Recently, Stacy Haiduk reprised her role of Patty Williams on Y&R, even though she is still being seen as Kristen DiMera on DAYS.

In a joint statement offered up to TV Insider, executive producer, Sally McDonald and head writer, Josh Griffith expressed, “We’re extremely grateful to Lauren Koslow for returning to her Y&R roots and temporarily stepping into the role of Jill. We want to extend our sincere thanks to Ken Corday (executive producer) and Noel Maxam (co-executive producer) at Days of Our Lives and Peacock. Their support embodies the collaborative spirit of the daytime television community.”

McDonald and Griffith clarified that Jess Walton is forever their Jill and shared, “Jess Walton is an enduring cornerstone of Y&R. We look forward to welcoming her back to Genoa City as her schedule permits and celebrating her extraordinary 40th anniversary as the iconic Jill Abbott.”

So, what do you think of Days of Our Lives Lauren Koslow stepping in for Jess Walton as Jill Abbott? Excited to see what she does in the role while filling in for the Jess? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

‘Days of Our Lives’ Alum Al Calderon Shares Parting Thoughts on ‘Brilliant Minds’ Following its Cancellation

Published

Last week, NBC pulled the plug on the medical drama, Brilliant Minds, as the last 6 episodes of its second and final season will begin to air later this month. The series which saw its ratings plummet was taken off the schedule in February, with reports of it being on the bubble until finally the decision was handed down.

Al Calderon, who departed Days of our Lives in the role of Javi Hernandez in 2025 to join the primetime series as Nurse Nico Silva, was a part of the stellar cast that also featured One Life to Live alum, Teddy Sears (ex-Chad Bennett) and series star, Zachary Quinto.

On Brilliant Minds, Quinto plays neurology physician Oliver Wolf, who’s character and the series is inspired by the life and books of neurologist. Oliver Sacks. The series focuses on the medical mysteries of the mind, as Wolf a larger-than-life neurologist and his team of interns explore the last great frontier, the human mind, while grappling with their own relationships and mental health.

In a real-life twist, Days of our Lives announced Calderon’s successor, Jacob Martinez as the new Javi debuting this June on April 30. Come May 1, NBC canceled Brilliant Minds. Now, on Wednesday, May 6, Al Calderon took a moment to reflect on his experience at Bronx General Hospital, the backdrop of Brilliant Minds, via a post on his Instagram.

“Thank you Brilliant Minds” Calderon began. “What a life changing experience. Met forever friends. Learned from the absolute best. Was reminded that my voice mattered. Learned that it’s okay to believe in yourself. Felt like I was part of something. While our beautiful show has gone onto glory we’ve got 6 more incredible episodes to share with you starting May 27th.”

Al also added, “NBC and Warner Brothers TV, thank you for allowing me to be silly and quippy, Demane Davis, Michael Grassi, David Rapaport, Zachary Quinto, thank you for all of your encouragement and support.”

As his heartfelt post came to a close, Calderon explained why the experience on Brilliant Minds was life-changing: “I’ve been at this a long time and this show gave me hope for the future of my career. I owe it to these incredible individuals. Our crew. Our writers. Our editors. The whole shebang. I love you all endlessly.”

Taking to the comment threads were several of Al’s Brilliant Minds and DAYS former co-stars, and even his successor, Jacob Martinez jumped in and shared, “YOU are brilliant 💕”

What did you think of Al’s heartfelt message about his time on Brilliant Minds? Will you miss seeing him on DAYS and on the primetime series? Looking forward to seeing what he will do next? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

‘Days of Our Lives’ Jacob Martinez on LGBTQ Representation, ‘Javi is the Kind of Character I Wish I Could Have Looked Up to On Television as a Kid’

Published

Next month, Jacob Martinez will make his highly-anticipated debut as the recast Javi Martinez on Peacock. Martinez takes over the role from Al Calderon who wraps on-screen in May. Since DAYS tapes ten months ahead of streaming new episodes, Jacob has been firmly entrenched in Salem for quite awhile now.

Martinez who is out in real life, shared how he realized the importance of LGBTQ and Latino representation in movies, television and streaming projects, and on DAYS when Javi is now played by Jacob, he will be in the thick of the drama with the man he had married, Leo Stark and the other members of the Hernandez family and more.

The young actor who is also quite the singer, spoke with OUT about working on a soap opera for the first time in his career, and what makes Javi, one of the most beloved and unique character’s on the soaps these days. In an ironic twist, Javi is a paramedic, and Jacob has also worked similarly in a related field.

“Being Hispanic, gay, and an emergency medical technician definitely helped me draw from real-life experiences when I got the role, explained Martinez. “But after reading the first few scripts, it became clear to me what truly drives this character: his heart. Javi is the type of person who constantly puts others before himself — not only on the job, but in his personal life as well.”

JAVI CAN CHANGE LIVES

Jacob who was born in Nebraska, didn’t publicly come out until he was 22, and shared he didn’t have the easiest time growing up: “You can probably imagine what it was like growing up as a closeted, gay, Christian boy in a conservative red state, with a preacher for a grandfather and a dash of Hispanic intolerance.”

Speaking on his takeaway from his time thus far inhabiting the on-screen life of Javi Hernandez on the long-running soap, Martinez expressed, “The truth is, Javi is the kind of character I wish I could have looked up to on television as a kid. Getting the chance to hopefully be that inspiration for another kid somewhere in a small town makes it all worthwhile.”

Make sure to circle June 30 for the new Javi to show up on your screens in Salem. Now the question is, will he be back in the story with a new love, trying to get back with Leo, or will forces keep them continually apart?

What did you think about Jacob’s thoughts on the importance of having a role model such as Javi for young latino and gay men to look up to on TV and to see themselves reflected in our pop culture? Share your thoughts in the comment section.
