Downton Abbey Renewed For Season 5!

‘Downton’ lives on for a fifth season!  The period piece, which recently wrapped its fourth season in Great Britain raking an average audience of 11.8 million viewers, won’t see its return in the U.S. till Jan. 5.   But British broadcaster ITV has just given the green light for a fifth visit to Downton Abbey!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Though a ‘Downton’ renewal was more than likely, given the series’ massive international popularity, it was not obligatory. The series has lost two cast members in the last year — including one, Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley), due to the lack of commitment required of TV actors in the U.K. — and the production is demanding on Oscar-winning Fellowes, who remains a hot commodity outside of the series.”

“As American audiences ready themselves for the January 5th premiere of season four, our devoted ‘Downton‘ fans will rest easy knowing that a fifth season is on the way,” said Masterpiece EP Rebecca Eaton.

Though Downton Abbey‘s fourth season is technically in the can in the U.K., the annual Christmas special — which will conclude the U.S. run on February 23 — has yet to air.  Downton Abbey is a Carnival Films and Masterpiece co-production, with EP Julian Fellowes still shouldering all of the writing duties.

The news of a fifth season is a most welcome one, however, there is mention in the British press of it possibly being the last. I hope that it is simply chatter, although Julian Fellowes is presently busy at work on what is being dubbed the “American Downton,” a period piece for Yank television that will focus upon the Vanderbilts in the late 19th century, which is indeed good to hear!!! In the past, I’ve also read rumors of him bringing the original “Abbey” to the big screen once the series production has ceased. Hence, all in all, it sounds as though this type of top-notch entertainment should continue on an indefinite, if slightly different, basis for the foreseeable future!

IT’S OFFICIAL: Downton Abbey The Movie To Go Into Production This Summer

The highly-anticipated and rumored revival of Downton Abbey to the big screen is on!  Production is slated to begin later this summer.

From what we understand, all of the original cast is set to reprise their signature roles in the motion picture, written by series creator Julian Fellowes.

Fellowes will also serve as the executive producer along with other ‘Downton’ notables behind the scenes: Gareth Neame, Liz Trubridge, and Nigel Marchant. Brian Percival is set to direct.  Percival also directed the pilot episode of the critically-acclaimed and beloved period soap opera series.

In a statement, Gareth Neame expressed: “When the television series drew to a close it was our dream to bring the millions of global fans a movie and now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production.  Julian’s script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival’s hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as Downton comes to the big screen.”

Focus Features chairman, Peter Kujawski, shared: “Since the series ended, fans of Downton have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter. We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of Downton to the big screen.”

Downton Abbey ran for six seasons on PBS  and received 15 Primetime Emmy awards and 69 nominations.

Actress Joanne Froggatt, who plays maid Anna Bates, took to Twitter with much enthusiasm at the news: “Delighted to announce we’re getting the band back together! #DowntonMovie #DowntonAbbey”

It looks like all of those earlier reports months ago about a production being put together for Downton Abbey: The Movie, may finally becoming to fruition. Numerous items detail that motion picture project is moving forward with production slated for sometime next year.

Michael Edelstein, president at NBCUniversal International Studios, told the AP: “We are working on getting the script right and then we’ve got to figure out how to get the (cast) together. Because as you know, people go on and do other things. But we’re hopeful to make a movie sometime next year.”

Currently, the cast and writer Julian Fellowes have been on hand at the Downton Abbey exhibition which debuted in Singapore. However, some notable members of the company seemed surprised by the news including Laura Carmichael (Edith): “Well, tell my agent, because we’re still waiting to know. We’re hoping that will happen soon.”

Variety reports that an NBCUniversal spokesman confirmed the studio hopes to put the movie into production in 2018.

The Downton Abbey exhibition however, is set to travel to the United States and Australia with dates to be announced. (more…)
