Tonight is the night Downton Abbey fans in the U.S!  The beloved British soap opera returns for its fourth season on PBS Masterpiece Classic (9PMEST)!  The anticipation is so high that one would expect a record number of viewers for the series opening episode, following the heartbreaking death of Matthew (Dan Stevens) in the final episode of season three, which left Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) a widow with a newborn child!

As had been previewed, this season is truly about Mary’s journey back to life following the sorrow and emptiness left after her beloved Matthew has passed away!  When Downton Abbey returns tonight, it is six months since Matthew’s death!  Mary is mired in grief and the estate is engulfed in death taxes. As the family struggles to lift their financial and emotional woes, clashes arise, sparks fly, and it is up to the older generation to bring Mary back to life, and Robert to his senses – no easy task in either respect. Another departure leaves no tears in its wake, but rather opportunity for new faces – and drama, alliances, and sparks of an entirely different sort – below stairs.

Amidst dark secrets, budding romances and surprising revelations, Downton Abbey returns with a gripping fourth season starring Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Shirley MacLaine, Paul Giamatti and the rest of stellar cast in the award-winning series from Julian Fellowes.

After the jump watch this fantastic preview clip featuring “Downton” creator Julian Fellowes and the fantastic Michelle Dockery discuss what to look for in Mary’s journey in season four!  Then, let us know will you be watching Downton Abbey tonight?

We’re hoping that will happen soon.”

Variety reports that an NBCUniversal spokesman confirmed the studio hopes to put the movie into production in 2018.
