Eric Dane Dies at 53 from ALS; Gave Final Interview With Understanding It Would Be Released After He Passed for Netflix’s ‘Famous Last Words’
In what has been a heartbreaking real-life story, actor Eric Dane, the once McSteamy from Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria star died on Thursday, February 19 from his battle with ALS at just 53 years-old.
Dane leaves behind his two daughters, Billie (now 15) and Georgia (now 14), with his ex-wife, Rebecca Gayheart (ex-Hannah Mayberry, Loving and All My Children). Through his decline, Gayheart was there every step of the way for Eric. Before his passing, and now in a wheelchair, Eric gave one last interview for the Netflix series, Famous Last Words, to interviewer and Hollywood writer and producer, Brad Falchuk.
The conversation was to be released after Eric’s death, per his request to appear on the series. In that conversation, he reflected on his battle with ALS, his struggles with addiction, and his marriage to Rebecca Gayheart: “I will never, by the time anybody sees this, have fallen in love with another woman as deeply as I fell in love with Rebecca,” he expressed.

The beloved star specifically shared that this interview was for his daughters, saying, “Billie and Georgia, these words are for you. I tried. I stumbled sometimes, but I tried. Overall, we had a blast, didn’t we? I remember all the times we spent at the beach, the two of you, me and Mom in Malibu, Santa Monica, Hawaii, Mexico. I see you now playing in the ocean for hours, my water babies. Those days, pun intended, were heaven.”
Eric also addressed the life lesson he took from knowing he was on borrowed time, “I wanna tell you four things I’ve learned from this disease, and I hope you won’t just listen to me. I hope you’ll hear me. First, live now, right now, in the present. It’s hard, but I learned to do that. For years, I would wander off mentally, lost in my head for long chunks of time, wallowing in worry and self-pity, shame and doubt.”
He also added, “Find your people and allow them to find you, and then you give yourselves to them. The best of them will give back to you, no judgment, no conditions, no questions asked. I’m so thankful for my very close family and friends. Every single one of them has stepped up.”

Dane continued, “I can’t do even the little things I used to do. I can’t drive around town, go to the gym, get coffee, hang out. I’ve learned to embrace alternatives. My friends come to me, we eat together, watch a game, listen to music. They don’t do anything special, they just show up. That’s a big one, just show up, and love your friends with everything you have.” In the emotional ending of his last interview on earth, Dane said, that his children were his heart and his everything, and good night, I love you.
Eric’s family released this statement on Thursday announcing his passing, “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.
