EXCLUSIVE: Michael E. Knight Pays Tribute To Former All My Children Castmate, The Late David Canary

Courtesy/ABC

As fans, castmates, and colleagues learned earlier this week of the passing of five-time Daytime Emmy-winning All My Children star, David Canary, people immediately went on social media sharing their sentiments and grief over the death of this icon.  Canary, for over 26 years played the incomparable Chandler twins: Adam and Stuart.  It’s a performance that will be remembered and never-to-be-seen again in the annals of the soap genre.  Canary died at age 77 at his home in Connecticut on November 16th.

One of Canary’s longtime cast members deeply affected by his passing is The Young and the Restless‘ Michael E. Knight (Simon Neville).  For it was Knight, who entered Pine Valley as Tad Martin, right around the same time as Canary.  David had just left his role of Steven Frame on Another World to take on the leading roles of Adam and Stuart on AMC.

In an exclusive conversation with On-Air On-Soaps, Knight shared his thoughts on: his beloved co-star, what David meant to daytime, their final tape day together on the set of ABC’s All My Children, the profound moment when Canary made an acting choice that would forever change the way Stuart Chandler would be played for the next 26 years, and more.  A retrospective, emotional, and candid Knight gave us a special inside glimpse into what made the actor and the man, David Canary, the most respected in his field.  Here’s what Michael expressed:

Courtesy/NATAS

Michael on David’s immeausurable talent: “David was one of the guys I felt very fondly towards.  He was definitely one of the family.  I think he and I started on All My Children at exactly the same time.  He was the best of us.  First of all, he was a known actor.  I remember watching David on Bonanza, when I was a kid.  He was unbelievably talented and at the same time, humble and generous.  I remember his Emmy reel one year with scenes between Stuart and Adam, when Stuart’s wife on the show died of AIDS.  There was a scene at the chapel of the hospital.  I remember he was acting his heart out, and my mouth was agape.”

Courtesy/ABC

Michael on David Canary’s status among his peers:  “I don’t think there is anybody who dreams of being an actor who doesn’t have moments of doubt when you spend your entire life on daytime television, because we are so easy to mock.  And anybody who isn’t into what we do can take shots at us.  The fact is: there is so much about the industry that is deemed silly, and rightly so – how many times can you be married to the same person, have your kids stolen, or have amnesia, etc?  But there are certain people in this business that if I look across the room and see them, I become so proud of what I am doing, and where I am: Tony Geary (Ex-Luke, GH), Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R), Eileen Davidson (Ashley, Y&R), Louis Edmonds (Ex-Langley AMC), James Mitchell (Ex-Palmer, AMC), Bob Woods (Ex-Bo, OLTL), Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH), Steve Burton (Dylan, Y&R), and David Canary was first on that list.  These are people that are good no matter where they are.  David was a beautiful guy inside and out.  He was professional, and he was the quintessential gentlemen.  David and Susan Lucci (Ex-Erica) set the tone for us at All My Children.   It’s a hard job.  It would be very easy to behave like a diva.  I’ve done it, but David was not one of those guys.  He set a very, very high mark for me, and everybody else.”

Courtesy/ABC

Michael recalls a touching moment with David on the final tape day of AMC: “On the day we wrapped All My Children, there was a scene we did where everyone got to say speeches, and Agnes Nixon (Creator, AMC) wrote this speech I gave as Tad.  I call it ‘The friends, neighbors, family speech.’   It was the wrap-up speech, and David was there.  While on the set, we were talking about life on the soap, and how we put in a lot of miles in between us …  and now we are looking in the rearview mirror together … and that who knew that when we met back in 1982 that we would be here now.  I was making a joke saying, ‘Who knew that I would turn into …?’   David cut me off and said, ‘… a good f**ing actor.’  When David Canary tells you that, it’s something.   When he gives you a compliment, I would like to go home and hang that on the wall!  David made all of us feel good, welcomed, and he inspired all of us.  He was always on time.  He was never late to work.  David was a powerhouse of a guy, and you better have known your lines when you worked with him … that’s for sure!” (Laughs)

Courtesy/ABC

Michael on David’s first AMC storyline, where his acting choice was  a game-changer: Adam’s first story was that he had a twin, and his twin was dangerous.  He had a housekeeper, and all of a sudden she would show up beaten up, etc.  The whole idea was Adam must be psychotic.  He is having a psychotic break, because he is doing very dangerous things: the windows are broken in the house, the housekeeper, all of these things were happening.  The reveal is that Adam has a twin.  Now initially, Stuart was supposed to be dangerous when they created the story.  However, there was a scene that was constructed like the famous black and white scene from Frankenstein, where the audience became aware that this is the twin.  This is Stuart.  He is in a room with somebody, who thinks he is Adam.  But Stuart walks in eating a cookie, and he offers the cookie to the person saying, ‘You want some cookie?’  It was in that moment where David made a choice that blew me away.  He chose to always imitate his then four-year-old son, Chris.  That is why Stuart would have that child-like ruffled hair, and that is when Stuart became this very simple soul.  All of the compassion and all of the love is within Stuart.  Adam is the ultra- male dangerous one who is out conquering the world.  The better half of his soul resides in his brother.  So, that is the moment that David discovered that Stuart, as a character, was in effect his son Chris at four.  That would live on for the next twenty plus years.  From that moment everything changed, and the writers backed him up.”

Courtesy/ABC

Michael on how David’s death made the news and people’s reaction to it: “When the news broke of David’s passing it hit all over the country. He is the type of guy where when you learned this, you just sit there for awhile with it very quietly.  David’s passing should be a big deal and written about.  He was huge in pop culture for decades.  If you knew anything about soaps, you certainly knew who David Canary was.  And people who don’t know soaps knew who he was!  David was a big deal.  He still is.  Everybody should be lucky enough to know somebody like him.  I can’t say it any better than that.”

So, what did you think of the sentiments, reactions, and stories shared by Michael E. Knight on his beloved former All My Children castmate, David Canary? What were you most intrigued to find out? What are your thoughts on the passing of David Canary, and what he meant to the soap industry, All My Children, and his colleagues, such as Michael? What was your favorite performance/storyline of David’s as Adam or Stuart Chandler? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

Beautiful story. I did not start watching AMC until 2000, but I loved Adam and especially, Stuart. I loved the scenes with Adam. J.R., Babe, Jamie, Tad and Dixie. I have always said when larger-than-life people die, it is so hard to believe they actually leave us. I felt the same way when Douglas Watson died from “Another World,” Beverlee McKinsey from “Guiding Light” and Frances Reid on “DOOL.” It is great to see so many people have such kind comments. I would love to hear from Cady and Jennifer Bassey.

Julia Barr gave a statement to SheKnows.com: “David Canary was my TV soul mate! I could not have asked for anything more in an actor or a fellow human being. He was the essence of kindness, a gentleman and my years of playing ‘Brooke’ to his ‘Adam’ were a joy! We were all blessed to have him in our lives.” Jennifer Bassey tweeted her condolences a few days ago. But I do understand that there are certain actors, above all others, whom we as fans need to hear from about David Canary, and for me, MEK was at the top… Read more »

David was brilliant in every thing he did. Many years ago, I remember him saying in an interview that when he was on Peyton Place that Mia Farrow would never speak to him outside of having scenes together. For the life of me, I could never understand why she would be that way. I can only hope that now she might take a moment to count the blessing she had to have even worked with him!
RIP David and may God’s comfort hold your loved ones tightly through this very sad and difficult time.
Cheers. X

Cady McClain also issued a statement on Facebook (and posted a link to a lovely piece about him on NPR):

“Please join with me in remembering the amazing life and incredible work of my dear colleague David Canary. Sadly, I just received the news that his life has come to an end.

It’s hard to find the right words…

He was an extraordinary man… a true gentleman and artist. Exemplary in every way. I am very proud to have worked with him for so many years, and blessed to have known him. “

Very touching ! David Canary was an acting kegend that will be missed by all, especially by the people who had the pleasure to work with him. As fans, we will miss the craziness and childlike innocence David exhibited in Adam and Stuart Chandler.

Wow amazing! Well written and well spoken and well special. I was born one year and one day after All My Children started airing. My mom got hooked on it. We used to have lunch with the show. When I was in college, I could always call my mom at noon and we’d have a long distance lunch. Then when I was home for the holidays, we’d always decorate the tree watching the show. David played all of his roles to their magical limits. But when he came to AMC he did something so amazing, something that no current actor… Read more »

Excellent tribute, Mr. Knight indeed has evolved into a fine actor, and a fine commentator, honoring this icon in a most exemplary way. God bless the memory of David Canary.

The sister-in-law of a former coworker was in the wardrobe department over at AMC for many years and was there when both Michael Knight and David Canary joined the show. I remember asking her about the cast and who her favorite people were. Canary was high at the top of her list; some of the anecdotes Michael Knight so eloquently recounted echo much of hers; punctuality, professionalism and truly creating characters who would be as distinctive in and out of costume. 77 doesn’t quite seem long enough to have David Canary around. Knight’s sensitive and beautifully recounted moments are lovely.… Read more »

When you know someone for a very long time and they are considered a part of your family and they die, you are lost …it’s a felling like none other, I know I lost not one but 2 daughters … 26 years is a long time to work with someone. You grow attached to them. They are a part of your life. Rest In Peace David Canary … Now about the Actors. I have the utmost respect and admiration for Actors especially Soap Stars. I have been waiting for Michael E Knight’s response. MEK has been pontificating about the brilliance of David Canary for years and it was through his observations where viewers like me came to fully realize just how brilliant Canary truly was. I did not know until just now that Canary based his interpretation of Stuart on his four year old son. What MEK says here should be read by not only AMC fans, but soap fans in general. Oh hell, it should be read by everyone. What he says about Canary, about the craft and his (Canary’s) handling of it… Read more »

Mr. Canary was a fabulous actor and I always enjoyed his scenes…even the times when I didn’t like Adam. But I always loved to hate him!

I vaguely remember the early “Stuart” references, and that he was locked in the attic and supposedly dangerous. (These were back in the day when I was working and there were no DVD/DVRs to record the shows, so I missed a lot.) So glad he turned that story around and made Stuart Adam’s better half.

Thanks MEK for your memories! It would be nice to read some of DC’s other co-stars memories.

I grew up watching All My Children. I remember being little and my mom ironing and it was on. My mom watched ABC soaps so I did. Do. I still watch General Hospital. For me David Canary was completely amazing to watch. One of the greats. But so is Michael E Knight for that matter. I am very grateful I know the true talent that they are and so happy I got to see David for so many years. It’s a huge loss to the acting and the soap opera community, but we are grateful he was here.

I remember waiting in line in NYC to see the a late afternoon special of The View. David walked by like a regular guy. Someone yelled “Adam”! Which I thought was cute. David turned around and chatted signed autographs and it seemed like he wanted to stay as long as the people wanted to chat. But suddenly he got a look on his face and said “what time is it?”. When told he said he had to get back go the set he was on his lunch break. He flashed that awesome grin, we melted and he jogged away. I… Read more »

I was looking at my hometown paper (Massillon, OH) on Newspaper Archives this week and looked up David. He was destined to be great as I could tell by how many articles he was mentioned in. He was always in the paper, honor roll, choir, his church, co-captain of the Massillon Tigers, football scholarship to Cincinnati, all Scholastic All American in college, etc He also remained true to his roots and loved the town he grew up in throughout his life, appearing in local theater productions. His father, Hillary, was well known in town being the manager of the downtown… Read more »

Babs…thank you, too. I grew up in Columbus, Ohio and OSU. Massillon was/is famous for it’s powerhouse football team which has produced many players who played for the Buckeyes (who beat Michigan Today). So to play football for the MTigers was a big deal. Until I read your comment I had no idea David was a jock. And this combined with all his other accomplishments! Quite a person. But I love most what he/Adam/Stuart brought to all of us fans of AMC.

In 1982 we had a VCR set to channel 3 with a cable box, my mom required us to change the cable box to channel to ABC. In the summer we change the channel per her request to ABC to All My Childrearing at airtime . Thereafter this child was hooked on Adam and Stuart. Rooting for the likeable cutthroat Adam. May he rest in peace. Michael, thank you for your found words and memories. I love your work.

I loved AMC. It was a show that I was fortunate enough to share with my dad and my mom at different times. The caliber of actors on the show brought the characters to life, making us care for and believe in them. David Canary as Adam/ Stuart epitomized this. He was and is a legend. Michael Knight as Tad and his scenes with Adam were fantastic. There are no words to express the loss not only for the soap world but all of acting on the passing of Mr David Canary. I started watching AMC in 1979 … & as an R.N. on nightshift, would set my alarm clock to get up & watch. When VCRs came out, I was the first to purchase one so I wouldn’t miss a single episode. I watched All My Children for many, many years – can’t even remember probably because it seemed like a daily part of my life. Adam Chandler was one of my favorite characters, as well as Tad Martin! One of my favorite times is having the two of them on screen together. As stubborn and strong willed as Adam was, Tad never put up with him. David Canary was beyond an amazing actor especially when he portrayed both Adam and Stuart in the same scene. I would completely forget it was the same actor!! I grew up watching Bonanza, and watched All My Children from day one. I don’t think I ever missed an episode. My Mom and I watched together. Eva LaRue Reveals COVID-19 Diagnosis

During former All My Children, B&B and GH star, Jacob Young’s podcast, Real Conversations with Jacob Young, he welcomed his good friend and former Pine Valley cast mate, Eva LaRue (Ex-Maria, AMC, and Celeste, Y&R).

At the very top of the episode, LaRue revealed she and her daughter Kaya tested positive for Covid-19.  She shared, “We thought we had dodged a bullet, but sure enough, on New Year’s Eve, we both tested positive.”

“Oddly enough,” she goes on to say, “I really feel like we’ve been so sick of being scared to death of the invisible monster underneath the bed all last year, always looking over our shoulders.”  Eva added, “Nobody knows which one they are. Are they someone who’s going to survive it or succumb to it? Or have residual effects? All we can do is pray for the best.”

However, LaRue has been trying alternative methods of helping her with Covid-19 via IV treatments.  “I’ve got this amazing integrative doctor who I’ve been working with for a long time, and I know a lot of people are like, ‘No, we only do Western medicine,’ and that’s fine, I love Western medicine… but integrated medicine and Western medicine have to go hand in hand, in my opinion. Because, I just feel like, we need to open our minds to what is new and what is out there.”   So because of that, Eva has chosen to receive these treatments to hopefully starve off any long term effects of Covid.

In addition, Eva told Young she has hopes for the new primetime All My Children reboot that is in the works:  “I have my fingers crossed that they’ll be doing something with this new Pine Valley show.”   Remember, the Santos family and the Kanes are said to be the epicenter of the revival, so perhaps LaRue will be a guest-star on it, since she is also close friends with two of the EP’s, Kelly Ripa (Ex-Hayley, AMC) and Mark Consuelos (Ex-Mateo, AMC)!

Send your well-wishes to Eva and her daughter, Kaya and let us know would you love to see LaRue on the ‘Pine Valley’ primetime reboot?  Comment below.

All My Children Primetime Reboot “Pine Valley” in the Works at ABC from Kelly Ripa & Mark Consuelos and Andrew Stearn

Huge news that could bring back a new updated version of daytime’s All My Children to primetime!

ABC is eyeing a revival of Agnes Nixon’s long-running beloved series that ran for 41 years on the network and then saw an online reboot from Prospect Park that lasted only one season.

According to Deadline, former AMC stars Kelly Ripa (Ex-Hayley) and Mark Consuelos (Ex-Mateo) will executive produce along with Andrew Stearn and Agnes Nixon’s son, Robert Nixon.

The series is currently in the early stages of development, but what has been revealed is: the reboot will be written/executive produced by Leo Richardson (Katy Keene, Star), and it will center on a young journalist with a secret agenda who comes to expose the dark and murderous history of a town named Pine Valley only to become entangled in a feud between the Kane and Santos families. The series explores all the secrets that come with the Kane and Santos family names.

In the new incarnation, Pine Valley, will feature a new generation of characters and some old favorites.  As of this moment, no original cast members have deals, but the plan would be to have them make appearances, plus Ripa and Consuelos could also make a cameo.  Of course, many are already pondering if Susan Lucci (Erica Kane) might actually be a mainstay on the new primetime series; since the Kanes are one of the core families in the reboot.

Pine Valley plans to continue the original series’ tradition of tackling difficult social issues of our time and being inclusive, which the show was known for under the iconic Agnes Nixon’s storytelling.

Of note is that Stearn is also a lifelong fan of AMC and has been the driving force behind the reboot.  In fact when he was deciding between ABC Signature and one other studio for an overall deal, he chose ABC Signature because it was going to allow him to pursue his dream of rebooting All My Children.  It was then he started tracking down the rights to the soap.  As soap fans know, the rights to AMC reverted back to ABC after Prospect Park’s online version fell apart.

Later, after meeting with a number of writers to helm Pine Valley, Stearn went with Richardson, who had worked on the British soap EastEnders in his native Britain. Stearn also got on board the estate of Agnes Nixon, with son Robert Nixon joining the project as an executive producer.
