Frank Valentini On OLTL & AMC: "Maybe you haven't seen the last of them. Keep your fingers crossed."

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

General Hospital’s executive producer and the former EP of the beloved One Life to Live, Frank Valentini spoke to the Chicago Tribune in a piece that was posted the night before the Daytime Emmys, which talked about all the One Life to Live and All My Children nominees reuniting and seeing each other for the first time in quite awhile at the telecast of the 39th Annual Daytime Emmys at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and broadcast on HLN.

Valentini stated in terms of moving on post-One Life, “I don’t think I’ve fully mourned the end of ‘One Life.’  I’m trying to prepare myself for seeing everyone again.  ”

Frank is hoping that the tributes given to the two shows on the telecast are not actually the final farewell for either program — and not just because One Life, which aired two weeks of episodes in January, may be eligible for awards next year.  The talented EP added, “Both shows will live on for years to come.  There’s still incredible equity in both of those brands.  Maybe you haven’t seen the last of them.  Keep your fingers crossed.”

Over the weekend online rumors began to ramp up that perhaps something is in the works to make  GH and OLTL more of hybrid, including posts and comments on different message boards that have said that GH now has some of One Life sets, and as we know, John and Tea see each other in Llanview this week.   But on the converse, that could also just be for this one story point.

Also of note in the Tribune piece, who also spoke to Erika Slezak (Viki, OLTL), they said that if S lezak wins, she plans on thanking the show’s many fans.  Valentini, who was a nominee as one of the show’s directors, said veteran director Larry Carpenter would deliver the speech if they’re victorious. “Larry’s a great guy.  He said if we win, it’ll give him a chance to say something nice about me which will make my mother very happy.”   Sadly, neither happened, and One Life to Live never got their moment to have someone so close to the show deliver a victorious and emotional speech Emmy winning speech for the million of fans who still mourn the loss of the show along with Valentini.

So what do you think of Valentini’s comments?  Let us know!

As a longtime OLTL fan, this “hybrid” is the worst of both shows because it disrespects their rich history and the fans. Why does Frank and other keep up this BS? Either be honest and tell us what’s going on or don’t say anything. All this you haven’t seen the last stuff is cruel. OLTL got dissed at the Emmys. The tribute was to Lucci who said AMC and Erica Kane 16 times and OLTL only twice. Some tribute. ;-(

susan M.
susan M.

Ms. Lucci took over that whole segment on the emmy’s….She was so full of herself that night…Everyone should have gotten a fair turn…She seemed to be the head honcho that night…She really wanted to get noticed something awful…I t wasn’t fair about OLTL at all…That really pissed me off….It should have been50/50 chance to talk not 80/20..The 20 for OLTL (Viki)….That wasn’t done fairly……………….

I won’t get my hopes till it is official…………Kate did get cured very quickly as a matter a fact…I remember it took Viki on OLTL much longer to get intergrated…It’s to good to be true…Something is going to happen w/Kate again..That’s the feeling I get….That comment F V made about you haven’t seen the last of OLTL & AMC….Can he clarify that comment more….It isn’t very clear to me……………….Here we go again, he made that comment almost a month ago!!!!!!!!!!! What’s up????????????????? I think it is a whole bunch of nothing…………..

I miss OLTL STILL and want it back ASAP!!!!!!!!!! I wanted Erika Sleszak to win ……………I am loyal to my favorite soap ONE LIFE TO LIVE!!!!! I would of liked to hear what Ms. Sleszak had to say if she had won…I look at the cast picture of OLTL everyday……And say to myself: I CAN”T BELIEVE my favorite soap OLTL is not on anymore !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They could have done more to put it on another cable station BUT, they gave up so quickly…The saying goes if you don’t succed at first, TRY, TRY, AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe nt. time that would be their last chance……Where was the tribute for OLTL & AMC ??????????? NADA TRIBUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miss OLTL like “CRAZY!” Still watching you tube and soapnet classics. I thought OLTL was snubbed at the Emmy’s and in my opinion the best soap that was. Have been watching GH but if John McBain leaves his family, Natalie & Liam behind, I will leave GH behind. His character just would not of done that. Love Michael Easton tho’! Hoping for GH & OLTL to combine and go for 2 hrs.

Nancy
Nancy

FYI Melissa Archer’s father is her agent and has forbid her to do anymore daytime. You cannot blame GH. I would love more than anything to get her on GH but I think her father wants her to stay away. I think they will recast her. Give the new people a chance because if we lose GH we have nothing but the crap ABC thinks we want to watch. Obviously they think we are stupid idiots.

Tali Smith
Tali Smith

I have heard that rumor so many times – yet I’ve heard her say herself she is very open about coming to GH, but there has not been any discussions as of yet. Not blaming GH for anything, wish it all the luck in the world!

Check out our Page: One Life To Live Continues……..The Continuing Story of One Life To Live! We are simplycontinuing it for our own enjoyment as fan/fiction. We are in no way whatsoever affiliated, related or linked with ABC/Disney, OLTL or the show’s writers……….

Here is the link to our site: http://www.facebook.com/oltlc

We are trying to Keep OLTL alive. We write in synopsis form and have many of the current characters and some new characters and lot’s of returning Characters from the 43 years of OLTL……..

We are very history oriented and give the show a twist of our own………….

Come Check it out………..

REALLY ?? You would leave GH just because of that

barbara t. Loves one life to live # 1
barbara t. Loves one life to live # 1

I agree with your question. People come and go on the soaps all the time, sometimes they just don’t want to come back. It’s not the soaps fault, why threaten to leave?

Terri
Terri

I strongly agree with Tali and I saw an interview where MA was interested in coming to GH is she could? I think no one knows the real story do we. I just really miss my OLTL and especially mourn the unfinished Jolie story. I cried when I saw Erika on the Daytime Emmys she deserved to win.

Kristi
Kristi

I really hope that AMC & OLTL could make a comeback! Watching the Daytime Emmy’s made me miss those shows even more! ABC daytime was all that I watched, and now I don’t even turn on my tv until GH comes on.

Vanessa
Vanessa

I truly hope that we have not heard the last of OLTL and AMC. I think OLTL was more of a reality drama than any of the others and ABC made a grave mistake when they took both shows off. I used to think ABC was #1 but not any more. ABC you can still redeam yourself. I also thought the “tribute” was more about AMC and Susan playing Erica Cane. OLTL got the shaft.

Frank
Frank

Fingers crossed that we see lots more of Llanview and OLTL. Leave Todd and Starr as permanent GH cast members, move a few PC people over to Llanview and interweave the stories more often. Filming on the same set and sharing production costs would reduce the cost of these shows and more fully taking advantage of new media would increase their profitability. What fans are more loyal than OLTL’s – we’re still mourning the show more than six months after its final episode.

Christy
Christy

I said this a while back – it would have been a much better idea rather than slash two good soaps to save money… if they have to cut the shows back to 45 minutes and do a lot more crossovers, and of cours

Christine
Christine

As usual, his comments are very coy.

I have heard that the Llanview sets are becoming a permanent fixture and that he is basically throwing the kitchen sink for September. September is supposed to be a HUGE month because that is when GH takes over OLTL’s old time slot in most markets and they NEED the viewers.

Debi

I started tearing up watching the Daytime Emmy’s every time AMC and OLTL got mentioned. Just heartbreaking. I miss my “daytime friends” so much. I’m still boycotting anything ABC/Disney in hopes that they will release the rights of those shows so they can possibly be revived elsewhere…

Iakovos

I am forever hopeful these series will return in some form but I wonder if any entity has what it takes to revive AMC and OLTL in the style in which we are accustomed. The TV landscape and ways we tell stories are changing to such a large degree. Even the four stalwarts that remain disappoint on some fronts. Daytime and overnight are vital dayparts in our busy 24-hour-a-day culture. Su in their crazy gram to stay in the webs’ good graces. rely something can happen other than the repetitive new cycle, mindless babble, and contrived reality that is all too prevalent anymore.

It makes me angry that no AMC characters have shown up on GH. I stoppe

Nancy

I love love love Frank Valentini. I believe it is not the end even though I never never thought my shows would come back. I will never watch ABC again except GH only because of the way they negate our feelings and their manipulations of the cancelled shows. I can hardly wait to see what he has in store.

Barb Harnedy
Barb Harnedy

The most positive thing I can come up with from this, is perhaps Soapnet will stay around and will continue replaying old episodes of OLTL and/or All My Children as they do now in the early morning hours. I would love to see somebody like the HLN network pick them up and order new episodes…but I don’t know if that’s very likely or not. I feel this is just another Executive Producer trying to keep everybody happy which is impossible to do. Don’t know why he would start getting people’s hopes up once again only to disappoint them….best he just keep quiet unless he means business!!!!

Trapper
Trapper

I would love to see a show before GH that was a half hour of AMC and a half hour of OLTL. But I’d certainly settle for whatever I can get. If it’s a hybrid, or half GH and half OLTL, bring it on! i’ll be watching!

Torrey

I don’t want to hear this crap of keeping my fingers crossed…..I did that for months, and they still cancelled OLTL. So, unless you can give me a guarantee press release that says that OLTL is coming back to a television near me, I don’t want any empty promises. Just another chance for the fans to be disappointed, yet again….

Please don’t take this as an insult, but Frank Valentini, “Maybe” isn’t really something that inspires confidence in me. It kind of gives me the impression that someone, who can either be honest with us or deceitful, is choosing to drag his/her feet and leave me hanging by a thread. The SOS Movement has been driven by a lot more than keeping our fingers crossed and wishing for the best. We have openly tried to make the best out of an ugly situation since April ’11 and I, for one, would like to take some comfort and security by believing that I am not being lead astray by someone who said ‘Maybe you haven’t seen the last of them’ as opposed to ‘You have not seen the last of them’ or ‘It’s over’. Say what you mean, mean what you say, and give it to us straight without the sugar.

I was so upset that OLTL was snubbed and didn’t win anything!!!! I personally didn’t like the Emmys because I felt that it was a joke! They had categories like the coutroom, culinary, and there was another category that had to do with food but i cant remember what it was, and internet viral video that wasn’t even necessary and hosts that should not have been apart of the show! I would have liked to have seen presenters from the soaps, not presenters that had nothing to do with daytime! Besides Anthony Geary’s wonderful speech and everything else GH won for! I just didn’t find it interesting! I am for the shows like AMC OLTL and GH becoming one show! Now that would be interesting like the did with the webisodes I think it was called!!!

susan M.

OLTL was over looked….I didn’t like that one bit…… This was the worst daytime emmy’s I ever saw………………………….The muppet thing was pathectic………And the music was RETARDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was sooooo BORING…It STUNK MAJOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Susan Lucci made sure everyone saw her on the t.v. when she went on her tippy toes when presenting an award & the winners came on stage…And you coudn’t see her…

Oh, come on susan m. give Oscar the grouch a break, he was the least of our problems, His trash can could have come in handy to throw a lot of the idiots that showed up Incuding Ericka Kane, God How I hate that name now. I think we were finished when Ericka Kane showed up and she took over the camera and the microphone and we didn’t get to see our precious Ericka Slezak, And that music, that was bad, But at least HLN let us see the awards they got good ratings, so maybe they will put it on next year and they can have a suggestion box on how to put on a good emmy show. Yes I had to change my name, there are 2 barbara t’s here, I am the real one.

HLN didn’t have the time to change a sit down dinner and hand out awards show.It takes months. At least they jumped in and did what they could with what they had.ITs on Tvline.com there where legal issues over showing any clips of oltl and amc.So I assume ABC did it again. No I didn’t wanna hear about Erica Kane neither and I am an AMC fan.But put the blame on ABC for screwing us over again.

OMG was I ever right about this man! He wants OLTL 2.0. I am so sick of this man and his unprofessional agenda! He was hire to be the leader of GH! I have watched GH for 42 yrs and I dont want to see OLTL 2.0. I watched OLTL about 20 yrs but Cartini ruined it for me. I liked old school OLTL not Cartini’s vision. He’s ruining GH for me now. I have watched very few episodes since Cartini took over with their agenda. Since there is no one overseeing him he can run rampant now. GH is steadily becoming just like Cartini’s OLTL-lame DID plots, slapstick ridiculous comedy, lame shirtless actors who cant act. And comic relief story lines disguised as serial drama. They have turned Heather into a cartoon. The show still belongs to the same 4 actors-Burton, Bernard, Monaco and Wright. Ugh! If they meld GH & OLTL I am truly done!
GH will never be the captivating, quality show it was under Gloria Monty. SMH.

Yes, and you know ,I was also thinking, What really aggrevates me sooooo much, is the Greed of Disney/ abc, and other networks, more than anything. When I look at so many of these Horriffic ,horrible programs that are on the air, and REMAIN on the air such as, BRIDEZILLAS, Jersey Shore, Houswives of this and that…It is disturbing. MEAN , ugly Horrible people, Screaming yelling cursing, and THIS is what People Want????? It is ver Disturbing to me. These are the lowest skankiest people, who are being made into T.V stars??? Sickening. All for more money in exec’s pockets? where is the moral compass for these greedy creeps?

I always told my sons growing up to work hard, and good things will come, and you will accomplish them.. What makes me Mad, is that THESE are the people losing their homes, and struggling in Life..BUTt we give Drunken, crude , loud horrible people T>V shows, and Tons of money.

We fire Writers, actors, entire crews, and hire Losers to drink and get drunk on beaches??????
WTH ???

Just watching the Emmys made me nostalgic and brought tears to my eyes. I thought Ericka Slezak was robbed. If Anthony Geary could win again, then so could she! To overlook Robert Woods for another award to Mr. Geary, just made me sick. I am not saying Anthony Geary is not a good actor, but enough is enough! In my opinion OLTL was terribly overlooked….as a matter of fact, so was AMC. I would really like to see my shows come back…I watch GH to see the OLTL cast members who have migrated, but quite frankly, it just isn’t the same. I MISS ONE LIFE TO LIVE!!

If there was a vote I would also pick One life to live. And I agree general hospital is better with our characters from landview crossing over.

It’s great to imagine, but it is all speculation. The AMC void may never go away.

Not if Susan Lucci, the “queen” of daytime and Erica Kane have anything to say about it. I am hoping she and Cameron Mathison do go away and never come back, after their daytime emmy performance.

Yes It’s me the original barbara t, there seems to be two of us, Or someone is using my name. david you are right about Susan and cameron. The best Actress was not given the time she deserved on that stage because the other two hogged the camera and the microphone. I feel cheated because I wanted more time with ERicka Slezak, she was the class act Saturday night not Ericka kane and Cameron Mathison, I hope they both go away to.

They need to realize they took something that wasn’t broke and tried to fix it. Daytime was best when they had AMC, OLTL and GH. I used to praise ABC for having the best daytime line up and best soaps, now I just pray they will bring back OLTL, keep GH on the air and go to hell for all they put us through with their treachery. I still don’t watch anything except GH on ABC.

barbara t. Loves one life to live # 1
barbara t. Loves one life to live # 1

That’s what I always say, you don’t fix something that was never broken and abc made things worse for their network because it will never be the same as it was before they cancelled the soaps. The only way they can fix it is to get rid of that trash tv they replaced the soaps with and at least bring One life to live back.

With regard to One Life To Live and All My Children, I agree wholeheartedly that their individual Brands are extremely viable so in view of that, I have to keep hoping that something wonderful will happen and that we will see their return

Bit with regard to General Hospital, I am so very pleased and encouraged by the direction Frank Valentini has taken General Hospital in.

I have been watching GH as well as One Life To Live since the first day each of those shows aired and before Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati showed up we all know that the ratings for General Hospital were not in a good place.

Since Valentini and Carlivati came onto the scene, General Hospital’s ratings have risen considerably as General Hospital is wonderfully alive again with great fluid storylines that the incredible actors at GH play brilliantly.

Since Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati took over the helm at GH, General Hospital hasn’t been this good since the heady days of Gloria Monty and I think that she would be pleased with what FV and RC have done with the show.

I love the hybridization of General Hospital and One Life To Live and having read numerous interviews with the actors at GH they love it too.

With what we are seeing on General Hospital now, moving forward I have nothing but hope for a bright and brilliant second 50 years for General Hospital.

I’ll believe it when I see it. We the fans have had the rug jerked out from under us so many times and I can’t take that anymore. I’m watching GH reluctantly now but refuse to get attached to another soap. I loved OLTL and miss Erika Slezak (she was robbed) and the rest of the cast. The “tribute” was ridiculous and totally dissed OL. I won’t be watching the Emmys again.

First I want to say that I “liked ” OLTL, was it the best show ever? only if you drank the oltl koolay. No matter how much OLTL fans want to re write the shows history as this masterpiece that got killed off wrongly in favor of a ‘lesser show” its not going to happen, ABC did the soap world wrong, that i’ll give you, but believe me if AMC OLTL l and GH were on CBS or NBC and they had to kill off two shows, those networks would of picked the same shows abc did to kill of. I bet if GH got cancelled by ABC, it would probably have a better chance getting picked up by another network, or cable outlet then its two sister shows, thats a given.

I would give anything to have OLTL back! They have been my family for 25+ years. Billy Douglas helped me come out of the closet in 1992. Viki’s cancer touched home for sooo many. I miss Llanview so much. Words cannot describe the mourning. I turned to GH after Frons’ became the most hated man in the US. I love it, but it’s just not the same. We NEED the Buchanan’s, Lord’s, Balsom’s, I could go on and on. Outside of GH, I have boycott ABC/Disney w/ sponsors. Please save our soaps! Kindest Regards~

All My Children

Eva LaRue Talks On Her Daytime Emmy Nomination, And Opens Up About The Loss Of John Callahan

For Eva LaRue, the past two months have been some of the most emotionally gut-wrenching and challenging of her life, following the passing of her ex-husband, father of her child, and dearest friend, John Callahan (Ex-Edmund, All My Children). The outpouring of support she has received not only from her former AMC cast mates, but the soap world in general illustrates just how dear Eva is to all of us, and how many people had special memories of their time with John.

While mourning the loss of Callahan along with their daughter, Kaya, there was some heartwarming and re-affirming news that any actress would love to hear. Eva was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in the Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series for her work as Celeste Rosales on CBS’ The Young and the Restless, and she is great company as her former AMC co-star Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad) is also nominated along with her for his work on General Hospital.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit our country and world hard, but through it All My Children virtual reunions emerged as fans were engaged by the content, transported to happier times that brought them back to familiar faces in Pine Valley in which Eva participated along with her good friends, Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos and so many more, thanks to the EW. com weeklong event which concluded on Friday.

Michael Fairman TV talked with Eva in this very candid, at times heartbreaking, and open conversation where she shares details into the final days of her beloved John, her last moments with him, and how she tried to plan a memorial in his honor during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For so many of us, 2020 has certainly seen more lows then highs, but in the end for Eva, to receive a nomination now (an award she was last nominated for back in 1997 as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work as Dr Maria Santos on All My Children) couldn’t have come at a better time. Here now is our conversation with Eva.

Photo: JPI

I’ve been thinking so much about you.  I’m glad we could do this, and in the midst of the tragedy of losing John Callahan, and then receiving a Daytime Emmy nomination.  What was your reaction when you learned you were nominated in a category with none other than your former AMC castmate and good friend, Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad, AMC, now Martin, GH)?

EVA:  Oh, I know!  He’s the first person I texted!  I was like, “Congratulations, Michael!  Did you ever in a million years think that you and I would be in the same category of anything?”  Then I said, “And when you win this, can I just borrow it for the weekend just to dress it up and take pictures with it… just want to borrow it, just babysit the trophy for a weekend, please?” (Laughs)

Photo: JPI

What did you end up submitting that landed you the nomination for your role as Celeste on Y&R?

EVA: I submitted a scene with Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R), who I have been friends for 30 years, if not more, and in all that time we had never worked together.  I met him when I was married to John O’Hurley (Ex- Dr. James Grainger) because John was over at The Young and the Restless at the time.  I went to a Christmas party with John to Peter and Mariellen’s house, and do you know who else was there?  Lisa Rinna (Ex-Billie, Days), and it was before she had gotten Days of Our Lives. She was dating Peter Barton (Ex-Scott Grainger, Y&R) at the time. We both ended up on soaps at the same time.  So, I submitted a scene with Peter, who is amazing, warm and open and such a great actor. Then I submitted a scene with my on-screen daughter Sasha Calle (Lola, Y&R) – I love that girl, and another one with Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R) who has also been my great friend for a couple of decades. The other scene I put on my reel was with me and Jordi Vilasuso (Rey, Y&R) who I also adore.  He is awesome and such a sweetheart.  I only had two months worth of material to draw upon.  So, I just submitted the scenes that I liked the best, and they all were within story, and all made sense.

Photo: Getty Images

Where is Celeste supposed to be now?

EVA:  She went back to Florida, and that was that. I would never say never to anything, but it was always supposed to be a short stint, and it was great.

So not only is it you and Michael E. Knight, but Jeffery Vincent Parise, Chrishell Stause, and Elissa Kapneck. This Guest Performer category is loaded!

EVA:  I know! I know and love, Chrishell (Ex-Amanda) because we worked together on All My Children, too, right before I left, and she is a doll.  She just might be the sweetest, kindest, girl on the planet.  She literally might be the sweetest person who ever lived!  I don’t know the other two nominees personally.  So, I’m excited for them too.  It’s such a diverse category.  It’s just really fun to be nominated with all of them.

Photo: Hallmark Channel

You were nominated before, though, for your work as Maria on All My Chldren during the emotional baby switch storyline; working opposite Susan Lucci (Ex-Erica) for a lot in it.

EVA:  Yes.  I was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for All My Children, and I was nominated for Best Original Song.  I wrote a song when Maria came ‘back from the dead’ to All My Children, with a producer friend of mine from Miami Sound Machine.

Photo: Live with Kelly Ryan

So, you’ve been doing all of these All My Children virtual reunions, which is so interesting that in this pandemic, people are looking for content, and they dip back into these beloved shows.  Was it fun doing the EW.com Santos Family reunion with everybody?

EVA:  Oh yeah, it was really, really fun.  I only saw in the big picture everybody else’s photo who was a part of it, and the people who I actually do hang out with the most, and see the most, and talk to the most, are Kelly Ripa (Ex-Hayley), Mark Consuelos (Ex-Mateo), and Sydney Penny (Ex-Julia).  I don’t see Sydney as much, but I do see her probably once every two years at least, but Sarah Michelle Geller (ExKendall) I see all the time and talk to all the time.  Kelly, Mark, and Sarah are the ones who walked me through that first week when John Callahan passed.  They literally were on the phone with me, the three of them, almost every day, but I got beautiful outreach, from what seemed like everyone.  This is when no matter how many years have passed since you have been in daytime, that the daytime family as a group – there used to be fifteen shows, now there are four – and people have bounced around and they are on other shows- – but the entire soap opera community reached out,   I cannot even tell you how much that meant to me.  It was overwhelming, and it was really, spectacularly beautiful.

Photo: JPI

I hope it was some solace to you knowing how much people loved John, and also that they love and care so deeply for you.

EVA:  I mean, people who did not even work with John reached out.  Every soap was represented by getting a hold of me, sending a text or a phone call, or if they didn’t have my personal information, they tweeted, or whatever it was… literally from every reach of soapdom.  It was amazing.

And your relationship with John was amazing with all of the ups and downs you went through; that you remained such dear friends.

EVA:  We remained really great friends all the way.

Photo: JPI

I so remember when the two of you first got together and it was this storybook real life soap couple romance.  John was always so sweet to me.  I was so, so sad, and you know, my heart just broke for you.

EVA:  I think it was just such a shock.  I don’t think anybody, and even Kaya were talking about it, because she graduated this week, and her dad is not here.  We’re not having a graduation, because of COVID-19, which sucks on top of it, but we were just kind of talking through the feelings of it.  She said, “You know what’s weird?  I guess I never pictured dad getting old, and I always wondered why, and now I know.”  When I would get on John about his heart or his health, he used to always say, ‘Oh, don’t worry Evala, (he always called me “Evala”).  I’m going to be here.  I’m going to be here a long time.  I’m fine.  I’m going to be here to walk Kaya down the aisle and see her kids and all that.  Stop worrying,” Every time he said it to me, something in my gut said, “I don’t think he is.  I don’t think he is,” but I always just dismissed that.  But never in my wildest dreams did I think John wouldn’t make it to her high school graduation.  He was only 66.

Photo: JPI

I had heard you ended up running to Palm Springs to be near John.  I can’t even imagine what that must have been like.

EVA:  The only good thing about this pandemic is that we had been shut down for only two weeks at that point.  Kaya and I got in the car.  John had some heart procedures the day before, on a Thursday.  I called him in the morning before he went in for the procedure.  I said, “Call me as soon as you get out of there.  Call me as soon as you come-to again, and you’re good,” and he said, “Okay, I will.”  I said, “I’m going to send Kaya out to you on Friday for the weekend, just so you have somebody to hang out and watch you, and I might come out too,” And then, I said, “Maybe, I’ll come down too in case you are feeling weak, just to watch out for you for the weekend.”   So, he called me after the procedure.   I said, “I cannot believe they sent you home! You just had some major heart stuff done.”  He said, “Oh no, they said I’m fine.  It was just run-of-the-mill heart stuff, angiogram…”  I was like, “Are you sure?”  He said, “Yeah, I’m fine.  I’m just tired.  I’m going to go to sleep.”  I said, “Do you want me to send Kaya out tonight?” and he was like, “No, no, no.  Send her tomorrow.”  So, in the morning, I called him at 9:00am.  No answer.  I texted him.  He always texted me like Johnny on the spot, and then texts me immediately back.  So, I call him again at 10.  Nothing.  His best friend calls me about a half-hour later, “Hey, I talked to John at about 8:00 this morning.  He said he was feeling really, really shitty and was going to go back to the hospital, and then, I texted him again at like 8:30 to just tell him something, and he hasn’t texted me back, and he always texts me immediately back.”  I said, “Oh my, God, I’ve been trying to get a hold of him for two hours; he hasn’t texted me back,”   I said, “You know what, I’ll call you back.”  So, I called his friend who lives down the street from John, and I said, “Go to his house, please right this second, knock on the door, jump the fence, knock on his bedroom, he might be asleep, I don’t know.”  So, he gets there, nobody is answering.  I said, “Break into the house please.  So, he did, and John was collapsed in the bathroom.  They called the paramedics, and as soon as they called me back and said, “John is unresponsive in the bathroom,” Kaya and I threw everything in the car, and what usually takes us two and a half hours without traffic, we made it down there from Los Angeles in an hour and forty-five minutes.

Photo: JPI

I don’t know how you made it down there in one piece. Thank, God!

EVA:  I drove so fast, like literally broke all land speed records and thank God because we got there just in time.  He was in emergency.  He hadn’t been put up in ICU yet, where we wouldn’t have been able to see him.  They weren’t going to let us in the hospital.  Thank God the person answering the door was an All My Children fan.  She was the one saying, “Sorry, no one is allowed in the hospital, no one can come in,” and I was like, “No, no, no, my ex-husband just came in.”  She said, “Was it Edmund?” and I said, “Yes, it was Edmund!”  She said, “Okay, follow me.”  Thank God for All My Children.  Thank God.  So, we followed this woman secretly, and we get to spend a half-hour with him in Emergency.  He was already on life-support, totally unresponsive, but we got to play John his favorite music, we got to just sit there and hold his hand and talk to him, and tell him how much we loved him.  Sarah Michelle Gellar called right when we were in the hospital in Emergency, and she said, “Put the phone by his ear,” so I put the phone by his ear, and she talked to John too, and she told him how much she loved him.  She used to always call him “GP”, which was short of grandpa, because she came on the show when she was 15, and she didn’t have a dad, and John acted like a dad to her – but she used to always call him “grandpa”, and he hated “grandpa”, so he was like, “You can call me “GP”, but not grandpa,” so she always called him GP.  I just put the phone by John’s ear, and what was crazy is that when she talked to him, his feet started twitching.  He started moving his feet.  Then, when Kaya was talking to him about Yankee season, he started moving his feet.  We were kind of hopeful that something was changing for the better.  We had about a half-hour with him, and then, they took him up to ICU, and then, we knew we couldn’t see him again.  They called us later that night that he had passed.

Photo: JPI

I am just so thankful that you got to see John one last time.

EVA:  I thank God every day that we got to say goodbye, because if we hadn’t gotten there in time to say goodbye, I just don’t know.

It’s very rare that a couple after a divorce, who have a child, and went from romance to dear friends, end up maintaining that relationship so many years later in their lives.  I know so many people who were together at one point in their lives, for years, and they don’t even talk to each other now.

EVA:  Well, you know, like any divorce, the first four years afterwards were super contentious but then, by year five, we kind of had this major breakthrough, and from then on, he was one of my closest friends, and one of the things we always kept alive for each other was we loved to  dance together. We fell in love, I think, dancing because originally our characters on AMC met at this country-western bar, and we had to take country line dancing lessons on the show.  They hired a choreographer for us so that during those scenes where we were falling in love, we would actually be able to do a two-step! So, we went out and practiced at Denim and Diamonds, which was a big country-western place in New York City at the time.  We used to go out with a whole group of us.  It was me, and Teresa Blake (Ex-Gloria) and Kelly Ripa, and her boyfriend at the time, Winsor Harmon (Ex-Del), sometimes Walt Willey (Ex-Jack); we just had a whole crew of us who would go out country dancing.  John and I also loved singing together.  He had the most amazing gravely kind of rockstar voice, but his real talent was harmonizing.  He could harmonize to anything.  So, when he would come over, we would sit in the kitchen and sing, and sing, and sing until the late hours because that’s what we loved to do, and that’s what he loved to do.  That’s one of my favorite last memories of us.  He was just over the month before, and Kaya’s bedroom is near the kitchen, so she came out and was like, “Can you two shut up?”  It was like two in the morning and we were still singing in the kitchen. (Laughs)  John was my dear friend and my confidant.

Photo: ABC

Were you able to have some kind of service during this stay-at-home pandemic we are all dealing with, in order to mourn the loss of John?

EVA:  It’s been so crazy.  We couldn’t even have a funeral.  That’s what made it all the more heartbreaking.  There were less than twenty of us, and we just got on a Zoom call and memorialized John.   I thought we were going to do a big Zoom memorial, but it seemed so overwhelming and so impersonal, it just was rubbing us wrong in every way.  Every way we were looking at it, we were like, “Oh my, God, we just can’t.”  We wanted to invite everybody he had ever worked with, and we were like, “No, we want to do that when everything can open back up again, and invite every person, and have a party” because John was always the life of every party.  Maybe we can do that in the fall or next year.  I kept trying to write something for the small memorial we did do for three days.  I kept coming back to this one song, because John was always the consummate bartender, too.  I sang a song that Bette Midler sang on the very last episode of Johnny Carson.  It was “One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)” and it’s about a bartender who has got a big personality and a lot to say.   I changed some of the words around a bit just to reflect who John was, and so, I ended up singing for it instead of speaking.  We always talked about that last episode of Carson; how stunningly emotional it was when Bette sang that song to kind of sing Johnny off for of all of his years on the air.  So, that’s what I did and because we loved to sing together, it just made sense.

Photo: HutchinsPhoto

I do think you touched upon something, earlier, too.  I don’t think any other genre would have that kind of unbridled camaraderie.  It’s such a family, like you said.  I don’t think you would find that quite like this; certainly in show business.

EVA:  I really don’t think you can. Even though there is always a good amount of competition in the soaps as well; between the soaps it’s like they are any sports team, but there is always a level of respect, love, and familial connection within the community.  I think that is why they have stood the test of time.  I really do think that is what hooks our audience, that is what keeps them there after all of these years, even though unfortunately the genre is antiquated looking, there is something about it that is nostalgic, familial, and comfortable for people.

Photo: JPI

Every time I talk about All My Children, why do you think everybody go ga-ga for it, when it’s been off the air for several years now?

EVA:  It speaks to people’s childhoods.  It speaks to how we grew up.  You can’t undo nostalgia.  You can’t.  It’s in the way we grew up, the things we loved, the things that we scheduled our lives around, the people we fell in love with on the shows that we watched, who we cared about and loved their storylines. I grew up watching All My Children, General Hospital, and Days of Our Lives.

It must have been a spectacular moment for you when you realized you were actually in Pine Valley and a member of the cast of All My Children then?

EVA:  It was amazing.  I was a fan when I got the show.  I was a straight up fan.  I fangirled walking through that dressing room hallway for the first time! I was trying to keep it in check, but you know … (Laughs)

Photo: JPI

So, in closing, you would say, “Thrilled to be nominated”?

EVA:  Yes.  So fun.  It has really been a rollercoaster of a couple of months here.  That nomination was literally the bright, shining spot in all of this.
