Genie Francis has had an incredible career as General Hospital’s Laura since 1977. Although she has left the series for spans of time, she had always returned and remains one of the most iconic stars to ever appear in the genre.

Back in 1985, Genie appeared on the ABC mini-series North and South and starred opposite the late Patrick Swayze. In North and South, Swayze played Francis’ older brother Orry to her younger sister Brett.  In the story of the adaptation of the novel, Orry is a wealthy plantation owner from South Carolina. Brett falls in love with Northerner named Billy, which complicates the story.

North and South is also where Genie met her husband, Jonathan Frakes of Star Trek fame, and the couple appeared on Sunday together in part two of Maurice Benard’s (Sonny Corinthos, GH) mental health you tube series, State of Mind, where a myriad of subjects on their marriage and more we discussed.

When Maurice brought up a question from a viewer, of what is was like for Genie to work with Patrick Swayze in North and South; she had nothing but high praise for the beloved star, who we lost too soon at 57-year-old back in 2009 from pancreatic cancer.

First, Francis mentioned that the recent scene that she had taped with Benard, which are believed to have aired last week on GH, when Laura comes upon a dead Dalton in the trunk of her car, and then talks with Sonny, about how she was targeted and how they have to clean up the crime since she was framed.

Genie noted, “Second to that scene that you did with me the other day, which is for me, by far the best scene I’ve ever done in my career (and I couldn’t have done it without you), prior to that, I thought the best scene I ever did was with Patrick Swayze in North and South, where he’s sitting there drinking.”

She continued, “Patrick plays my older brother (Orry) and I (Bret) go to him and I say, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ And, he smacks her in the face and she turns on him and says, ‘That’s it. I’m outta here.’ That was on my (acting) reel for a very long time.”

Speaking of her deep love and respect for the late star, Genie expressed, “Patrick Swayze was the salt of the earth. He was such a kind, loving man and he assumed sort of a role of big brother in my life when we were shooting (North and South). Just the best kind of person. It was so sad that he was taken from us so early from pancreatic cancer.’

You can check out this absolutely classic scene from North and South, between Genie Francis and Patrick Swayze from Orry and Brett’s confrontation below.

Loved North and South ! Miss Patrick Swayze ! Genie Francis is and has always been an amazing actress! Loved her since she was on GH and still hitting it out of the park today!

I remember North and South. It was a wonderful mini-series and I loved Genie in it.

Too much Benard ass kissing. I ff the parts where he’s talking about himself which was 2/3 of the interview…Genie’s part was good…

Loved that miniseries. Patrick took from us too soon.

Van Hansis Marks Two Years as ‘General Hospital’s’ Dr. Lucas Jones

Published

Van Hansis

It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since Van Hansis made his debut as the recast Lucas Jones on General Hospital. It was back on October 4, 2023 that GH fans got their first look at the former As the World Turns (ex-Luke Snyder) favorite in his new soap role.

Hansis became the fifth actor to play the role of the adoptive son of the late Bobbie Spencer and Tony Jones, and the biological son of the late Julian Jerome and Cheryl Stansbury. Prior to Van, C.J. Thomason (2002–2003), Ben Hogestyn (2005–2006) Ryan Carnes (2004–2005, 2014–2020, 2024) and Matt Trudeau (2020–2021) had played the part.

When Van left daytime after As the World Turns sadly went off the air in 2010, it would be 14 years until he stepped back into the updated frenetic pace and grind of acting on a daily soap opera.

LUCAS CAME HOME TO PORT CHARLES

Since Lucas has been back in Port Charles, he fell in love with the late Marco Rios (Adrian Anchondo) who was murdered, moved into a new apartment with his current roommate (soon to be love interest?) Joe Fitzpatrick as played by Jonathan Bennett, has become best buds with the “Britch” Dr. Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud), and has found himself involved in multiple other storylines. However, now that Van is firmly implanted on GH, might Lucas get a leading storyline of his own? Stay tuned.

In the meantime, to acknowledge his two-year anniversary at General Hospital, Hansis shared via his Instagram a photo montage and some heartfelt “thank you’s’ and words. “Two years ago yesterday, Lucas Jones came home to Port Charles looking a little different. Looking exactly like me.” began Hansis.

“When I took on the role, I was told it would be a heavy recurring for a few months and then we’d see where it goes – being based in NYC at the time, I thought it would be a fun little gig that would bring me back to my old stomping grounds of daytime for a bit.”

GENERAL HOSPITAL HAS BEEN LIFE-CHANGING FOR VAN HANSIS

Next, the longtime New York-based actor confirmed he has now moved to Los Angeles as this new chapter of his life has unfolded, and how grateful he is that the show’s writers and producers have continually given more for Lucas to do.

Van explained, “But then they kept writing for me more and I fell in love with Lucas, and everyone around him (in front of and behind the camera). I wanted to stay a while and am so grateful I have. Being a part of GH these last two years has been life changing. Literally. My family and I are Angelenos now, I’ve made incredible new friendships and have been able to revisit old ones.”

The three-time Daytime Emmy-nominated actor concluded with, “Thank you Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH), thank you Mark (Teschner, casting director, GH), for inviting me to the party. You throw a great one. ”

So, happy to know Van is sticking around General Hospital for some time to come? What has been your favorite Lucas Jones moment over the first two years of Van’s run? Let us know via the comment section below.
