‘General Hospital’ and ‘Knots Landing’ Favorite, Doug Sheehan Passes Away at 75
Doug Sheehan, who was beloved on daytime and primetime soap operas, first for his role as Joe Kelly on General Hospital and later for his role as Ben Gibson on Knots Landing has died. Sheehan was 75-years-old. The actor passed away at his home in Big Horn, Wyoming back on June 29th. He died peacefully with his wife at his side. No cause of death has been revealed.
Soap fans first saw Doug when he arrived on the scene in Port Charles back in 1979 and he stayed with GH till 1982. In story, Joe was a friend of Jeff Webber (Richard Dean Anderson) and a lawyer. Through his run, the character dated nurse Annie Logan (Susan Pratt), and later was the love interest for nurse Bobbie Spencer (the late Jackie Zeman). In addition, Joe was the son of Paddy Kelly, who owned “Kelly’s” Diner which has now been renamed “Bobbie’s”.
While at GH, Doug received a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 1982. He competed against David Lewis (ex-Edward, GH), Gerald Anthony (ex-Marco, OLTL) and Darnell Williams (ex-Jesse, AMC) in a stacked category. The award went to David Lewis.

After exiting GH, Sheehan headed to CBS and Knots Landing in 1983 and took on the role of journalist, Ben Gibson during the show’s fifth season. Ben fell in love with Val (Joan Van Ark) and the two were eventually married. He became Val’s second husband after Gary Ewing (Ted Shackelford). Sheehan exited the cul-de-sac during Knots’ eighth season in 1988. Ben’s exit story saw him heading to South America never to be heard from again.

In addition to GH and ‘Knots’, Sheehan also appeared on Passions in 2002, plus numerous other television credits including: Columbo, Charlie’s Angels, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Alice, MacGyver and Cheers to name but a few. Sheehan also starred on the short-lived sitcom Day by Day (1988-1989) in the role of stockbroker Brian Harper and ABC/UPN’s Clueless (1997-1999).

Very sad news. He was a great actor and enjoyed Joe Kelly very much.
Oh I’m sorry to hear this. Joe Kelly was one of my favorite characters when I was a kid. That era of GH was my favorite era. He was so handsome and talented. My condolences to his family.
Doug played Joe Kelly as the quintessential good guy. Had Doug not been as good an actor as he was, Joe would’ve come across as very dull.
Like many other GH cast – gone too soon. A sad coincidence that he passed away the same year they retire the Kelly’s name.
That thought had crossed my mind too.
I’m saddened to hear. Loved him on Knots.
Loved him!! This is such sad news , my condolences to his family.
Loved him on the great Knots Landing! Prayers to the family left behind.
This news breaks my heart. He was so wonderful as Joe Kelly. May he rest in peace.
