General Hospital has just announced than none other than Nathan Dean (who formerly went under the name Nathan Parsons) is returning to the ABC daytime drama series in his signature soap role of Ethan Lovett, the biological son of the Luke Spencer (the late Anthony Geary) and Holly Sutton (Emma Samms).

According to a statement from General Hospital’s executive producer, Frank Valentini released by TV Insider, he shared, “We are so excited that Nathan Dean is returning to General Hospital as Ethan this April. We have a great story planned — with, of course, a few twists along the way.”

The actor was first seen on the soap opera from 2009-12 and returned for short stints in 2013, 2015 and 2020. And as GH fans may recall, Ethan originally read for the role of Dante Falconeri, that went to Dominic Zamprogna. However, the GH brass created a whole new role for him instead, and he debuted back in 2009 as a con-artist who eventually was revealed to be the son of Luke Spencer and Holly Sutton.

ETHAN’S ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES

Nathan decided to exit the soap opera for the first time at the end of 2011. However, he received a Daytime Emmy nomination for his performances in 2012. Dean went on to work in primetime on the hit series, True Blood and later CW’s Roswell, New Mexico, and Once Upon A Time on ABC, among other projects.

The character of Ethan popped back on GH in 2013 for the show’s 50th anniversary and then most importantly in 2015, for Tony Geary’s last major storyline before he exited as Luke, when Ethan and his half-brother Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson) were kidnapped by Frank Smith, which meant Holly, Luke and Laura (Genie Francis) went in search of them for one last adventure for Luke.

The last time Nathan Dean played Ethan were in episodes that aired in September of 2020, when Ethan ran into Olivia Falconeri (Lisa LoCicero) while she and Robert (the late Tristan Rogers) were going undercover in Monte Carlo to get the intel on a presumed-dead, Holly.

In 2022, the character returned in a storyline, but was played by actor James Ryan.  In that story, Victor Cassadine (Thaao Penghlis) had imprisoned Ethan. It was later revealed in story that Ethan returned to Australia and has remained off-screen for over three years.

So, excited to hear Nathan Dean is returning as Ethan Lovett and how he figures into the story? What are your predictions on how Ethan will shake things up in Port Charles? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

What con game will Ethan be running this time? Maybe he’ll mingle with Britt this time. Ava likes them younger, so that might be an interesting match as well.

Would have made more sense if they brought him back for Luke’s “memorial”, since they insist he was Luke’s son (despite that being the most ridiculous rewrite of backstory in GH history).

I’m guessing they might be bringing him back for a few months so they can fill the huge void left by Jason’s upcoming absence. Which is a better move than bringing in a random newbie, obviously.

On the other horn, even though he’s supposedly Luke’s son and not Robert’s, I wouldn’t be surprised if they wanted Ethan around for whenever they decide to write Robert’s passing into the storyline. No doubt Holly will be part of that story, so of course she would want her son around. And it’s probably about time Ethan met his sister Sasha (the second most ridiculous rewrite in GH history)

I see your Nathan and raise you a Gio.

You mean in terms of ridiculous rewrites? Yeah. That might be another one. Just the idea that Dante & BrookLynn are suddenly the same age. Let alone the idea that they hooked up at summer camp as teenagers, she got knocked up, and nobody ever knew, even though they grew up in the same neighborhood, in families that were connected from way back when.

Here’s the thing about rewrites and retcons… some can be saved by great acting. The Gio timeline is ridiculous, but each of the performers in the storyline excelled, making it more palatable.

Mediocre acting or poorly written dialogue can easily sink a retcon. Clearest example is the Peter debacle, which wound up being a retcon of a retcon when fans and online pundits spoke up.

Or the NuJagger embarassment. While I can understand those who might have objections to how that storyline ended, the important part is that it ENDED.

And thank all that’s unholy for that!

Somehow I feel the Jagger murder might resurface when Justine trys to take Sonny down.

never cared for the actor

I am shocked he agreed to return. I wonder what the story is ultimately going to be (if the writers/TPTB even know). But he is a solid actor so this is a golden return that’ll help enrich an already overrun canvas. Better than the dayplayers we keep getting.

Before more characters are introduced, I wish the writers would wrap up a few stories and trim the cast. There are so many people on the show that sometimes we go weeks without seeing an actor or storyline. The Sidwell storyline is ridiculous (Maxie’s heart attack, Ava/Lucy, Willow, Carly, Lucas, Marco, Kristina). I like a good umbrella storyline, but this one seems too over the top.

I would like to see a few more Quartermaines. It would be fun to see Celia and Dillon back on canvas. I would also like to see more Rick Hearst, Michael E. Knight/Jane Elliot.

Still say that Celia Quartermaine and her husband “Grant Andrews” (not his real name) are Yuri’s parents. Grant got homesick after the end of the Cold War and moved back to the old country to raise a family.

Now their son is living with his Quartermaine relatives, but do they know who he is?

Truthfully I’m glad to see him back! I’m shocked that they didn’t use him for the Anthony Gary/ Luke Spencer tribute. As a fan of the show for many years one of the characters son should be in it just for legacy reasons only. Anthony Gary will never read be replaced on the show but his legacy could live on through his son on the show.

I’m glad the actor is coming back love the Ethan character and his connection, maybe now he won’t see Kristina as a kid, she’s all grown up (still screw loose) but every time Frank Valentini says “we have a great story planned” I cringe or wanna take a shot of tequila, lets not forget he said something similar to Ryan Paevy underwhelming return.

Even if it is a poorly written script Nathan Dean will make it enjoyable to watch. I am a fan of his. He is an awesome actor & definite eye candy. I just started watching General Hospital only because Nathan Dean is coming back in April. I discovered him on Netflix who starred on “ROSWELL NEW MEXICO”. So far, I am totally lost on GH. I guess you have to watch it for a while to understand what is going on. I just discovered Nathan will appear on the show on April 17. As someone else here said, “Nathan Dean is a solid actor”. And it will be a golden return that I predict will perk up GH & boost its ratings.

Yay for this actor’s return as Ethan! I thought the Luke tribute episode premise was perfect: Lulu finally grieving for her Dad. Ethan can do the same when he re-enters town. It does seem smart timing, with Jason out a while. But I’m excited to think how he could be fresh meat for Ava, lol – as well as provide opportunity for reappearances by our lovely Holly and Sasha to th PC canvas. Looking forward to what develops!

I’m glad he’s coming back. Just hope the writers really have something juicy for him and don’t let him sit on the shelf for weeks.

Good I’m sure it’s to reveal that Ethan is in actuality Roberts son and not Luke’s since Holly miscarried Luke’s baby back in 1982 when she married Robert to get her green card and to prevent herself from being deported.

That’s almost certainly not going to happen now. There’s no payoff in changing Ethan’s father at this point. Sadly, both Rogers and Geary have passed on.

Ethan already has a bond with Lulu. With Robin not on the canvas – there’s (again) no payoff.

Even though we all know it would make much more sense for Ethan to be Robert’s son – as Holly was indeed pregnant with his baby when she allegedly died in a late 1980s plane crash – it wouldn’t make any sense to change his paternity now, with Luke & Robert both being dead. So I doubt they’re going there

Years ago Kristine had a huge crush on Ethan but she was too young for her. Kristina is suppose to be Bi not lesbian so I would love to see her and Ethan finally get together. The kids of Luke & Sonny getting married and having kids what be a great storyline and give tribute to them possibly naming their son after Luke.
