GENERAL HOSPITAL: Did Dante’s Outburst at Gio Seem Out of Left Field, Just to Make Father/Son Angst for Reveal Down the Line?
On the Wednesday, May 7 episode of General Hospital, Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) went off half cocked on an innocent Gio (Giovanni Mazza), after his son Rocco (Finn Carr) is rushed to the hospital with alcohol poisoning. Rocco and Danny (Asher Antonyzyn) had snuck into the PCU beach party and Rocco ended up on his own drinking too much. Gio actually found Rocco passed out and tried to get him to safety.
However, while at the hospital, Dante throws down all over Gio with a tirade saying while in front of Lois (Rena Sofer), he knows who Gio really is. Of course, that has double meaning here, as everyone has been shielding Dante from learning the truth – that Gio is his biological son with Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton). Lois just looks on in anger and horror.
Dante continues to yell at Gio, that he has watched him grown up since he was a baby and wants to know how he could be so careless as to give Rocco booze that almost cost him his life? Gio swears up and down he had no idea that Danny and Rocco were even at the party.

Next, Dante goes in on Lois, saying that she and Gloria coddled Gio his whole life and this is the result. Gio swears he doesn’t know who is responsible for the plight Rocco finds himself in. Dante threatens Gio that if he finds out that he gave booze to Rocco he will face police charges. Lois fires back at Dante that if he’s going to play Mr. Detective, maybe find out the facts first.
Lulu (Alexa Havins), who is conveniently eavesdropping on the conversation, comes forward to intervene and tells Dante to stop, and that Rocco will be okay. An emotional Dante yells, “My ONLY son could have died tonight.” That’s when Lois yells at Dante that he’s way out of line.
Out of nowhere, Gio takes responsibility for the situation and says, “No, Dante’s right. This is on me.” Next, Gio runs off. Dante tells Lois to chase after him and make it better for him, just like she has for his entire life. Lois yells back at Dante and says at least Gio was there trying to help Rocco, as opposed to Dante who was nowhere to be found when his son needed him. Lois tells Dante his anger is misplaced and he should be thankful that Gio was there. Most college kids would have left a drunk kid on the beach to sleep it off, but not Gio.

Lois tries to explain to an unknowing Dante, that Gio has a good heart just like him, and shame on Dante for not recognizing it as she storms off. Lulu thinks Dante is way out of line, especially when he keeps saying how irresponsible Gio is, but Lulu points out Gio is a classically-trained violist, which takes extreme discipline.
Eventually, Rocco and Lulu go into Rocco’s hospital room to be by his side, after he was just visited by his grandmother, Laura (Genie Francis). Rocco’s parents, while angry at him, love him and are just so glad he is alive and OK. When Lulu exits the room, an emotional Dante tells Rocco, he promises to never turn his back on him. Outside in the hallway, Lulu makes a voice memo to herself to look into where Lois was when Gio was born.

Clearly, this episode was written to establish conflict between unknowing father and son, Dante and Gio. So, when the reveal happens things are not good between the two of them, or Dante will feel so guilty and awful for the things he said, he will eat crow too. Then we have Lulu, who clearly has put two and two together. Now the question becomes, if Lois gets on to her, will she manipulate any past paper trail or evidence tying Gio’s birth to her? Stay tuned.
So, were you annoyed by the scenes where Dante unloaded on an innocent Gio and brought up what an irresponsible kid he had been all his life; when clearly that is not the Gio in front of us? Share your thoughts via the comment section.
Yeah.. two things came out of this:
First one was the standard soap cliche writing that always comes with the “long lost kid” storylines. Gotta make up some reason for the parent and the kid to hate each other before the truth comes out. Long time GH viewers will remember how much Alexis & Sam hated each other, just before they found out they were related, and then stem cells from Sam’s dead baby were used to save baby Kristina’s life.
The other thing was Lois’s outburst in the hospital where she’s yelling at Dante “You don’t know who he really is!!” Lulu saw that, and she’s putting 6+6+6 together and adding it all up.
So to continue with the standard soap cliche writing, I’m expecting Gio to find himself in a medical emergency soon, where blood transfusions are required. And either Lois will blurt out “Dante, he’s your son!!” (as she came very close to doing yesterday) or Lulu will insist that Dante get tested, probably with BrookLynn giving her some kind of “death stare” as she says it.
I was super annoyed that Dante went off on Gio. So out of character for him. And Gio did get him home. How is a young college guy supposed to know if someone has alcohol poisoning? And I am really tired of Miss holier than thou Lulu butting her nose into this situation. It has nothing to do with her and others have repeatedly told her to keep it to herself. She just keeps on meddling.
I wanted to shake Dante. Talk about kicking someone when they’re down. Every time we thought he’d gotten it out of system, he’d hunt Gio down to lay into him some more. Gio is so sweet. I was glad Cody defended him but I’d like to see Cody lay into Dante a little for being so hard on Gio. I understand Dante was terrified and upset but he went rogue on Gio and he got personal and came short of calling him a worthless, fatherless bastard. He definitely insinuated he was a pampered, sheltered charity case. It was cold and harsh. He owes a major apology to Gio. Yes, Gio is guilty of not calling 911 nor calling Dante or Lulu, but he still got him off the beach where he otherwise might have died right there.
Well said. Dante was a total jerk! Gio is the best… I can’t wait til it all comes out.
It was over the top the way Dante reacted to Gio. That kid has been nothing but perfection since he came to town. So polite, helpful, loving, intelligent. I am dying for this secret to come out. Tracy needs to beat it out of Lois! Gio is Sonny’s grandson! Sonny will have a cow!
Tracy is gonna have a cow too when she learns she shares a grandson with Sonny. Lol. Maybe she’ll learn about it first, and maybe she’ll just tell Lois she’ll keep the secret. As much as Tracy hates Lois, she would go along with Lois’ deceit rather than let Sonny know the truth. I look forward to when Tracy learns it’s Gio. She already loves him.
At least neither Gio nor Danny had unprotected sex and knocked somebody up as a teen, Dante
Well… not that we know of. But considering teenage Sonny fathered Dante (and didn’t find out about it until decades later) and now we find out that teenage Dante did the same thing, then that establishes a pattern, and there’s probably a toddler somewhere in Bensonhurst who has an unusual ability to play his little Fisher-Price toy violin.
Of course we won’t really find out about that until about 2050. If GH is still on the air, that is.
Oh my God. HILARIOUS!!!!!

John Oliver Recaps His ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘General Hospital’ Soap Opera Experience on ‘Last Week Tonight’

Last Week Tonight host, John Oliver had his soap dreams come true on not one, but two long-running daytime dramas, heralding it his “hot soap summer” on the Sunday night, August 16 edition of his HBO series.
As viewers recall, Oliver’s tour of soap duty began back in March when he made a request and an offer to appear in any daytime drama that would have him with certain conditions, which included: having a ridiculous and over the top character name, a juicy storyline, and a slap.
Both Days of Our Lives and General Hospital came a-calling for Oliver, taking him up on his offer and in short order. Oliver appeared on GH in the role of the head of the WSB named Z on episodes airing July 2-6, and then on DAYS in the role of Salem’s chief water inspector, Devlin St. John, in episodes that streamed the week of August 11.

FIRST STOP, PORT CHARLES
On Last Week Tonight, Oliver shared that both soaps delivered, and then launched into a comedic send-up complete with clips from some of his scenes. Starting with General Hospital.
Oliver said, “To General Hospital’s credit, they met all my requirements and more. First, my character got to arrive by a helicopter flanked by a pair of armed goons. And I got to do a dramatic walk during which I bravely shot in the general direction of a guy who was already on the ground. It’s called being an action star, by the way, unless you’re me or Vin Diesel, you really wouldn’t understand. And then in my next scene, I revealed my true identity. (Oliver played the scene where Josslyn wakes up in a hospital bed with Z standing at the side of her bed introducing himself).
He continued, “As for getting slapped, well, they knocked that and me out of the park too, because it turns out that agent’s mother was not happy with me,” explained Oliver, as they cut to the slap of Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) in the WSB Port Charles bureau office on Z. Oliver screamed, “YES! It has everything! A slap, a dramatic closeup, and me doing a voice so wrong, it is genuinely embarrassing. That was my honest attempt at an American accent. I can’t tell you why it’s southern. I can only tell you I was trying my hardest.”

SECOND STOP, SALEM
Then, came John’s wrap-up of his role of Devlin St. John on Days of Our Lives, the town’s chief city water inspector. “It is on Days of Our Lives I appeared in scenes alongside soap legends like Jackée Harry (Paulina) and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie). And the Days of Our Lives team met my demands in a whole different way because instead of being an international spy boss, they wrote me a character a little more my speed.”
Cut to a clip of Oliver introducing himself as Devlin St. John to Rita. He explains, “I’m the only thing standing between this town and a catastrophic plumbing failure. A literal sewage apocalypse. They made me Salem’s Chief City Water Inspector, which let’s be honest, is perfect casting. If you’re going to bottle my essence and sell it as cologne, it would be called ‘Chief City Water Inspector.'”
DEVLIN’S WIG
The late night host also clarified all the reports, that the wig he wore for his DAYS character he actually brought from home. “Now, as for the hair, I agree, it’s absolutely incredible. It’s been reported this past week that it is a wig I brought to set from home. And while it wasn’t technically from home, we did actually provide that wig, and for good reason,” joked Oliver. “I’ve seen myself act. I knew the hair was going have to do 90% of the work. I’ll be honest, I was going for a healthy John Stamos (ex-Blackie, GH) look, but instead, it appears I ended up looking more like Tina from Bob’s Burgers.”

Photo: Corday Productions
“And if you’re wondering whether I got slapped on Days of Our Lives, not only was I slapped by a man wearing elegant silk pajamas (EJ), I also got to slap him, which felt utterly incredible. But wait, I was also stabbed with a syringe and not once, not even twice, but three different times. And if that wasn’t enough, this happened too.” At that point, Oliver played the clip of Rita using the taser on Devlin.
JOHN OLIVER LEAVES DOOR OPEN FOR A SOAP RETURN
The now late night star-turned-soap actor concluded his segment with, “Are you not entertained? Watching that makes me feel the way I assume Matt Damon felt after seeing the first cut of the Odyssey, both proud and impressed that my body could even do that. Which again, you wouldn’t understand. You’re not an action star like I am now. ”
As he ended his recap, Oliver thanked both soaps for playing along, and noting that neither DAYS or GH actually killed him off! Could a John Oliver return happen down the line? Stay tuned.
Watch John detail his soap dreams come to life on General Hospital and then Days of our Lives below.
Now let us know, what did you think of the performances of John Oliver on General Hospital and Days of our Lives? Did you prefer one over the other or enjoy both of his guest arc visits? Could you see Oliver nominated in the Guest Performer category at next year’s Daytime Emmys, even for a 3-episode run on one of the soaps? Let us know in the comment section.

In the GH video teaser for August 17-21, while Dante and Elizabeth are enjoying some time together, a jealous Ric warns Lulu (Alexa Havins),”There is a growing connection between the two of them. And if we don’t break it, you and I are going to lose the loves of our lives.”

CHAD ON DECISION TO STEP AWAY FROM GENERAL HOSPITAL
Chad has previously sat down for a conversation on The Able Show seven months ago, where he doubled-down on his decision to walk away from General Hospital when he did. Duell explained, “I’m blessed to be part of that (show) for as long as I have. But what happens sometimes is if you’re doing the same thing, especially in a creative field for such a long time, you can get a little burnt out in a way. It can make you a little depressed, so that’s kind of what happened.”
Sadly, Duell suffered the devastating loss of his beloved father in 2024, which also was very difficult for him as he detailed, sharing, “On top of that, I had other things going on in my life at the time. My father passed away recently and I just needed a reset. So, I stepped away. A lot of times you have to go through some stuff to really step into that next level. I needed to kind of feel uncomfortable.”
