GENERAL HOSPITAL: Valentin’s Passport Goes By the Name ‘Will Cortlandt’; Do You Appreciate the Wink-Wink to ‘All My Children’ or Not So Much?

By Michael Fairman

on

Since the rights to All My Children and One Life to Live reverted back to ABC several years ago (following the dispute with Prospect Park), General Hospital has often taken liberties and incorporated the canceled and beloved soaps in naming conventions of new characters, or several nods to the audience within a particular story, or mentions of towns that the Port Charles characters need to go visit (Llanview, Pine Valley, even Loving’s Corinth).

For instance, many viewers know that Michael E. Knight’s GH character of Martin Grey, was named after the fact that Knight is most soap-famous for his run as Tad Martin on All My Children. In addition, we have seen the likes of Llanviews’s Nora Buchanan from One Life to Live come to Port Charles on a legal case as played by Hillary B. Smith.

Now, on yesterday’s March 17th episode of GH, as Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) went to his old house now inhabited by Sonny (Maurice Benard), he started to look for important documents (in the chimney) including his passport, and came upon it using the name, “Will Cortlandt.”

Photo: JPStuartFacebook

Longtime ABC daytime viewers know that James Patrick Stuart first soap role was that of bad guy Will Cortlandt who was the brother to Dixie Cooney (Cady McClain) on All My Children. James played the role from 1989-1992 and then again in 1994. Eventually, Will met his maker at the hands of Janet “from another planet” Greene (Kate Collins) when she hit him over the head with a crowbar.

On Monday’s GH, the writers seem to have some fun with the inside joke and “wink-wink” to its faithful audience who would get the inference in Valentin’s fake passport. In fact, not only did Valentin have a different name on the passport, so too, of course did his daughter, Charlotte (Scarlett Fernandez), who had the name “Melanie Cortlandt” on hers. If you know your AMC lore, Melanie or “Lanie” was played by Paige Turco and was the sister of Will and Dixie. She eventually was written off the canvas when she headed to France.

At the end of yesterday’s GH, Sonny comes upon Valentin and pulls out a gun and asks, “Forget something?” How will Valentin get out of the situation he finds himself in now? Stay tuned!

Meanwhile, as savvy soap fans; do you enjoy when GH (the only remaining ABC soap opera) injects some AMC or OLTL into its story with little Easter eggs or nuggets that are brought in as a nudge-nudge to you, or do you think they should not to it at all as it breaks the “reality” of the current story and wish they didn’t do such things? Not so much.

Just hearing the name and the reference to All My Children makes me wish for its return to television. Please……

Exactly!. The women still fear Erica Kane in business!

It would be great for Erica to make a guest appearance…that would be a great cat fight between her Lucy and Tracy

Okay, suspend reality for a moment here. What if Will Cortlandt is not dead and that was an old alias of Valentin’s for his early WSB days. So not so much of a “tongue in cheek” nod to the old soap but literally him on both soaps!!! LOL!!! *mind explodes*

You should be writing for GH

That was my first thought as well. Talk about making it interesting and opening the door for other characters to make their appearance in PC.

It can happen, just like the person who plays Ned is was on another Soap Opera at the same time

I like it!

They already did that with Tomas Delgado (OLTL)/ and Lorenzo Alcazar

I wouldn’t like that because Will Courtlandt raped Nurse Gloria. Valentin has some redeeming qualities, however, if he is a rapist, he’s irredeemable.

Luke rape Laura on GH

I do like the nods to both AMC & OLTL… it helps keep my dream of seeing OLTL return to our screen.

Oh how I wish OLTL would return! Miss that soap so much!❤️

Me too

GH fan: From your lips to God’s ear. I wish for the return of One Life to Live every day. I realize many of the actors have passed on or retired. So, I’m fine with combining with All My Children to become All My Life to Live.

Why not bring them both back in half hour installments with smaller casts?

In order for this to become plausible, in my wild imagination I created a scenario where major flooding of the Llantano River destroyed the cities of Pine Valley and Llanview, and several residents would have moved to Center City (conveniently located between the two towns, along with the now-abandoned Corinth!) and have All My Live To Live (like your title!) become to the smaller still living cast members. We’ve sadly lost so many in this near-fifteen year absence

I love it!

Thanks, and I agree fully with your thoughts.. ABC could re-draw the map and make Pine Valley and Landview closer together… then make a combination show as you suggest.

I love that idea!

…ir- All my Childrens Lives to Live

Let’s not forget GH has a huge Ryans Hope connection too because Ava Jeromes mother is Delia Ryan who they once had on the show she came to Port Charles and even told Sonny that his father Mike she seen his photo on the desk, (then played by Ron Hale) looked just like her main love Roger Coolidge (also played by Ron Hale) that was funny.

I’m totally fine with the hints to the departed shows. Heck, I’ve been asking for a case of mistaken identity for Sonny for years. Have someone approach him, asking if his name is Nico Kelly.

I agree. It’s a soap opera, which by definition means it’s filled with over the top situations. Why not some subtle humor occasionally?

Nico is Sonny’s cousin from Bensonhurst. He is also the grandson or nephew of Paddy Kelly, the origiñal owner of Kelly’s.

Being Paddy’s nephew would be an interesting twist, although the Kellys of Port Charles were definitely Irish.

Love it!

Me too! I like the reference to AMC, AND OLTL as long as things are not put on hold on GH

Is he related to Palmer Cortland?

Isn’t that awesome?

Yes, his nephew and Dixie’s sister. Palmer Cortland, aka Pete Cooney.

If I still watched GH, I would be thrilled that Valentin is back!

Well Betty…what are you waiting for ? Tune back in ! Every viewer counts!

Loved it!!

I caught it and wondered how many would get it. I think it is an homage to AMC

I saw it too, and it brought back great memories!!

I find it refreshing to acknowledge Pine Valley and characters from All My Children. I personally would love to see MORE characters from All My Children. I don’t find it distracting. I feel it makes GH stories MORE REALISTIC, when the writers do references and characters from AMC !!!! ☘️☘️

Me too! Love it.

he played will courtland on all my children

BRILLIANT. I didn’t notice that when it aired

Loved it and all the nods to former ABC Soaps! Keep them coming!

You know theres people out there that are fans of all three soaps and watch them, so for people like us its fun to see these little nuggets and i’m all game for more. I know a lot of fans want both shows AMC and OLTL to come back, I thinks the smart thing to do is to fuse both does show toghether and form one spin off of sorts, remember it wont be easy to bring back everyone from each show, so a hybrid seems more doable, but what do I really know, for now those little nuggest from GH seem better then nothing , in fact they should do more and have Jackson Montgomery and Noah Buchanan visit Port Charles again, i’m sure some one in that town needs a lawyer to go up against GH leagle eagles Alexis and Diane.

While the short stint appearances of Nora and Jackson were nice, there are already far too many lawyers on GH and not enough doctors.

I love the nostalgia. I started watching soap operas with my grandmother and am glad to have the references from the Soaps that she watched. I watched all my children from the time I was 16 and I’m now 67

I only watched GH with my grandma in the 60’s

I like it .. I watched AMC, OLTL since their inception and subscribed to soap net when that’s the only place you could watch. Even went to an AMC event @WDW when it was Hollywood studios and they sold various clothing, jewelry, etc. items in the commissary. Any chance of seeing either of those soaps again. There can only be so many talk shows!!

Would love to see Erica Kane show up for a sparring session with both Nina and Lucy,

I’d rather see her take down Tracy. That woman thinks she’s invincible or untouchable, do they mean the same thing, the old brain’s not working.

I loved Erica Kane but it’s Tracy who has the most family grit, she is an amazing leader of her family i admire her strength and fight. She also in her age is beautiful and, soft at times but more powerful in her love for family.

I enjoy the references a lot. Fun memories.

That used to be my daily routine; ” One Life to Live”, ” All My Children,” and General Hospital. Now it’s just GH, every day at 1:00.

Yes, me too!

Standing joke at my house. When a soap opera character goes to Paris or France, they’re goners. We figure there’s a whole colony of soap opera stars in Paris. Xref Mel.

It’s cool

Like the wink.

I LOVE it phone my niece to see if she noticed it

No not really

Yes, I loved it!

Love the reference

Oltl needs to return

Loved the nod. I miss all the ABC soaps 12 through 3 was my favorite time with my grandma and mom

Love it

What troubles me is when GH paints themselves into a corner by doing this, so to speak. For example, is Tomas Delgado the real character, and Alcazar a CIA-created pseudo identity? Or the other way around? And Blair Cramer now an ex-wife to Martin Gray? I do like seeing actors from the past shows but it’s imperative that there’s a level of continuity between the character between the prior show with GH. Nora Buchanan was seamless. If Will Cortlandt and Valentin Cassadine are one and the same, some heavy duty thought better be done before this would be revealed, lest another Tomas/Alcazar situation occur again

Will Cortlandt and Valentin Cassadine are not one and the same. It was just a nod to AMC because the actor, James Patrick Stuart, played Will on AMC but now plays Valentin on GH. One actor but 2 different characters on 2 different shows.

Not so much for me too.

I think it’s a fun idea. Also, you forgot to mention that Erica Kane and her magazine name has been thrown around lately too

I want Erika Slezak on GH or Y&R Vicki, Niki, Tommy & her daughter Jess, Tess! They did it with Ashley on Y&R & it was terrific, bought back those great storylines. I also hope that Sam & Finn from GH head over to B&B or Genoa City as Livvie & Caleb

I did notice “Cortland” and thought did I really see that? I loved him on AMC!

I LOVED it!!! It brought back so many memories of ABC’s great soap legacies. Please continue to include these little “Easter Eggs” for us to look for while watching our favorite soap!

I have been watching GH since I was 16 and now I am 79. Have enjoyed every moment of the show always can’t wait for the next episode. Keeps me in suspense sometimes I can solve the mystery before it airs. Thanks and keep up the good work

Love it!!!

Love love the wink wink to All My Children and love when they bring in more characters from Llanviee. Ache for those shows to come back. I’m disabled and can’t get out much and wud watch all day. As I used too

Tad and and Dixie were deeply in love too.

Love tidbits of past shows AMC and OLTL. Miss both so much and their amazing talents. Why cancel for cooking shows was ridiculous.

love it, keep going

I love the All my Children reference

Saw that immediately and giggled!!

Love it! Keep it up!

Love the nods.

Love it! I thought I recognized that name, now I know I’m not totally crazy! LOL

Has anyone else noticed isaiah GANNON and wondered if he will related to hank gannon or nora hanon-gannon-buchannon from OLTL?

It was an awesome nod

The passports buzzed by so quickly. I would’ve missed it at someone that posted to keep my eye out for it. I absolutely loved it! Please keep it up!

‘General Hospital’ Alum Jonathan Jackson Shares Emotional Tribute to His ‘Nashville’ Leading Lady Hayden Panettiere

Published

The entertainment world has been mourning the loss of Hayden Panettiere, who died on Sunday at the age of 36. Panettiere, who was so familiar to daytime drama fans in the roles of a very young Sarah Roberts on One Life to Live and Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light, also starred as an adult in the primetime music city soap opera, Nashville as country and western singer, Juliette Barnes.

Panettiere’s leading man in the series, was none other than six-time Daytime Emmy-winner, Jonathan Jackson (ex-Lucky Spencer, General Hospital) who played musician Avery Barkley.

The actress’ death is still under investigation in Greenville, South Carolina, now calling in the DEA  after the Greenville County Coroner’s Office said there was “no signs of trauma that were discovered that would have contributed to the death.” Hayden’s body was released to her family on Tuesday, August. 18. It is believed Panettiere died of an “overdose.”

WE GREW UP IN THE INDUSTRY

Jonathan Jackson took to his Instagram on Wednesday night, August 19 to share poignant words in remembrance of his Nashville co-star. “I have no words to express the loss of our beloved Hayden,” began Jackson. “She had such a bright light within her. She was a sensitive soul. Incredibly funny and witty. Amazingly gifted, with a great sense of empathy and compassion. We both grew up in the industry, although she started even younger than me, but we shared that. A silent knowing of how intense the struggles can be.”

Panetierre started in show business in 1990 at only 11-months-old, while Jackson was cast on General Hospital in 1993 as Luke (Anthony Geary) and Lauras’s (Genie Francis) son, Lucky when he was 11-years-old. Jonathan drew on the parallels in their lives for his remembrance to his late former co-star.

“She was an absolute joy to work with. Focused, spontaneous and brilliant,” continued Jackson. “The most important thing between friends and coworkers is trust, and we had this. Elisa (formerly, Lisa Vultaggio) and I both love and cherish her deeply, like our own sister. She holds that place in our hearts. My prayer for her every day we worked together was that she would know how loved she is, and that she would find the peace that she was looking for.”

WE LOVE YOU, HAYDEN

Sadly, Jonathan concluded with, “It’s not possible to express the shock and grief that so many of us feel right now. Our humble prayers are with her family. May God’s angels carry you to your place of rest and true peace. We love you Hayden. You will always be in our hearts. Always.”

Nashville ran for four seasons from 2012-2016 on ABC, and then moved to CMT for its final two seasons from 2016-2018. The actors on the show could also sing and like Jackson, Hayden had a powerful singing voice that was showcased in the series as well as her undeniable acting chops.

Michael Fairman TV previously shared more of Panettiere’s Guiding Light and Nashville co-star tributes here.

So, what did you think of Jonathan Jackson’s very touching tribute to Hayden Panettiere? Did you love them as Juliette and Avery on Nashville? What have you thought about the ongoing investigation into Hayden’s death? Share your thoughts via the comment section.

BRYAN CRAIG’S MEMORABLE RUN AS MORGAN CORINTHOS

Since leaving General Hospital, Craig’s other roles have included: ABC’s Grand Hotel and Freeform’s Good Trouble, along with appearances in Valor, Walker and American Fighter to name but a few.

Bryan appeared on General Hospital for his initial run as Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly’s (Laura Wright) son from 2013-2016. His journey ended when Morgan was presumed dead after a car bomb killed him that was meant for Sonny. Craig later returned for appearances as Morgan in different iterations in 2018 and 2024. Craig won back-to-back Daytime Emmy Awards in the former Outstanding Younger Actor category in 2016 and 2017.

It was back in 2016, that Craig told Soap Opera Digest on his decision to exit General Hospital: “It’s been an amazing journey, but I feel like the time is right for me to say goodbye to General Hospital and Morgan Corinthos. This was not an easy decision and I am extremely grateful to ABC, Frank Valentini, and the entire GH cast and crew for the opportunity and their unyielding support. To the wonderful fans who have embraced and loved Morgan as one of their own, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

So, glad to hear of Bryan’s casting in The Weapon? Are you still holding onto hope that GH will bring back a very much alive Morgan Corinthos that could shake-up the canvas? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

John Oliver Recaps His ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘General Hospital’ Soap Opera Experience on ‘Last Week Tonight’

Published

on

By

John Oliver

Last Week Tonight host, John Oliver had his soap dreams come true on not one, but two long-running daytime dramas, heralding it his “hot soap summer” on the Sunday night, August 16 edition of his HBO series.

As viewers recall, Oliver’s tour of soap duty began back in March when he made a request and an offer to appear in any daytime drama that would have him with certain conditions, which included: having a ridiculous and over the top character name, a juicy storyline, and a slap.

Both Days of Our Lives and General Hospital came a-calling for Oliver, taking him up on his offer and in short order. Oliver appeared on GH in the role of the head of the WSB named  Z on episodes airing July 2-6, and then on DAYS in the role of Salem’s chief water inspector, Devlin St. John, in episodes that streamed the week of August 11.

Photo: ABC

FIRST STOP, PORT CHARLES

On Last Week Tonight, Oliver shared that both soaps delivered, and then launched into a comedic send-up complete with clips from some of his scenes. Starting with General Hospital.

Oliver said, “To General Hospital’s credit, they met all my requirements and more. First, my character got to arrive by a helicopter flanked by a pair of armed goons. And I got to do a dramatic walk during which I bravely shot in the general direction of a guy who was already on the ground. It’s called being an action star, by the way, unless you’re me or Vin Diesel, you really wouldn’t understand. And then in my next scene, I revealed my true identity. (Oliver played the scene where Josslyn wakes up in a hospital bed with Z standing at the side of her bed introducing himself).

He continued, “As for getting slapped, well, they knocked that and me out of the park too, because it turns out that agent’s mother was not happy with me,” explained Oliver, as they cut to the slap of Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) in the WSB Port Charles bureau office on Z. Oliver screamed, “YES! It has everything! A slap, a dramatic closeup, and me doing a voice so wrong, it is genuinely embarrassing. That was my honest attempt at an American accent. I can’t tell you why it’s southern. I can only tell you I was trying my hardest.”

Photo: ABC

SECOND STOP, SALEM

Then, came John’s wrap-up of his role of Devlin St. John on Days of Our Lives, the town’s chief city water inspector. “It is on Days of Our Lives I appeared in scenes alongside soap legends like Jackée Harry (Paulina) and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie). And the Days of Our Lives team met my demands in a whole different way because instead of being an international spy boss, they wrote me a character a little more my speed.”

Cut to a clip of Oliver introducing himself as Devlin St. John to Rita. He explains, “I’m the only thing standing between this town and a catastrophic plumbing failure. A literal sewage apocalypse. They made me Salem’s Chief City Water Inspector, which let’s be honest, is perfect casting. If you’re going to bottle my essence and sell it as cologne, it would be called ‘Chief City Water Inspector.'”

DEVLIN’S WIG

The late night host also clarified all the reports, that the wig he wore for his DAYS character he actually brought from home. “Now, as for the hair, I agree, it’s absolutely incredible. It’s been reported this past week that it is a wig I brought to set from home. And while it wasn’t technically from home, we did actually provide that wig, and for good reason,” joked Oliver. “I’ve seen myself act. I knew the hair was going have to do 90% of the work. I’ll be honest, I was going for a healthy John Stamos (ex-Blackie, GH) look, but instead, it appears I ended up looking more like Tina from Bob’s Burgers.”

Photo: Corday Productions

“And if you’re wondering whether I got slapped on Days of Our Lives, not only was I slapped by a man wearing elegant silk pajamas (EJ), I also got to slap him, which felt utterly incredible. But wait, I was also stabbed with a syringe and not once, not even twice, but three different times. And if that wasn’t enough, this happened too.” At that point, Oliver played the clip of Rita using the taser on Devlin.

JOHN OLIVER LEAVES DOOR OPEN FOR A SOAP RETURN

The now late night star-turned-soap actor concluded his segment with, “Are you not entertained? Watching that makes me feel the way I assume Matt Damon felt after seeing the first cut of the Odyssey, both proud and impressed that my body could even do that. Which again, you wouldn’t understand. You’re not an action star like I am now. ”

As he ended his recap, Oliver thanked both soaps for playing along, and noting that neither DAYS or GH actually killed him off! Could a John Oliver return happen down the line? Stay tuned.

Watch John detail his soap dreams come to life on General Hospital and then Days of our Lives below.

Now let us know, what did you think of the performances of John Oliver on General Hospital and Days of our Lives? Did you prefer one over the other or enjoy both of his guest arc visits? Could you see Oliver nominated in the Guest Performer category at next year’s Daytime Emmys, even for a 3-episode run on one of the soaps? Let us know in the comment section.
