GENERAL HOSPITAL: Who Shot Austin?

By Michael Fairman

As we head into a new week on General Hospital, last Friday’s cliffhanger had a shocking ending. Someone fired two shots at Dr. Austin Gatlin-Holt (Roger Howarth), and at the end of the episode, he was lying on the floor bleeding out.

It all went down after Austin went to the PCPD to talk to Dante (Dominic Zamprogna). He tells Dante he will give him evidence on who was his and Mason’s  (Nathanyael Grey) boss – the person who is mastermind behind all the terrible things he did, in exchange for leniency.

Dante informs Austin that he is really in no position to make a deal. Austin responds, “I don’t think you really understand the risk I took coming here. If my boss finds out that I’m here before you get a chance to bring him into custody, I’m a dead man.”

Photo: ABC

Austin promises to give up the name of his boss (Cyrus) if there is a guarantee he will have immunity. Dante says he needs evidence that they can use and Austin agrees to give it to him.  At the end of the day, a conflicted Austin, wants to clear his name.  He tells Dante he’s not a bad guy, and he is really trying to do the right thing.

Later at the PCPD, Dante tells Robert (Tristan Rogers) that Austin will give up his boss for his immunity. Robert is OK with the deal as long as they have the evidence.

Later, Austin comes home and walks inside. He recognizes someone who is there and says, “What are you doing here?”  We see what looks like a man’s pair of shoes walking. The next thing you know, Austin is shot twice, and the final moment of the episode shows Austin in dire straits.

Now the question becomes, who shot Austin?  Is it Mason, who isn’t somehow in Pentonville? Is it Cyrus (Jeff Kober), who is one step ahead of Austin? Could it be Nikolas (Adam Huss), who originally was holed up at the house where Austin was secretly keeping him … or, could it somehow be Ava  (Maura West) who wants revenge?

Share your theories and picks in the comment section below on who pulled the trigger on Austin and what you think will happen next!

At this point, does anybody care about this character?

Not me, Shari. This character has long overstayed his non-welcome. I still have no idea who or what he is and am past caring.

I know. Right, Soaphound? Such a stale character—Glad Cyrus is staying for however long. He’s one of those baddies whom I appreciate—Drew should go next. I cringe.
Aside—these writers need to get their facts straight. All three countries allow dual /multiple citizenship. I have family in those countries—it’s allowed. Happy Thanksgiving❤️

LOL, my thought upon seeing the title of the article was: wrong question; better question: “Will he die (and stay dead)?” (please, please, oh pretty please)

I like the suggestion from somebody farther down in the comments: If they’re going to keep Howarth around, can they please have him play Todd Manning again? Of all the characters I’ve seen him play, that’s the one that I found most watchable: actor and character really seemed to click. (Of course, maybe that’s the writing; almost certainly that was the biggest problem with Franco, who never should have been turned into a romantic lead.)

Todd Manning! Ewww! Roger is a good actor, but he needs a better character to portray. Austin doesn’t have a lot of substance.

I care what happens to Austin? I think he’s a good actor and it’s just a self opera, and it needs to not drag on for things need to put Cyrus away. I think it was Cyrus he’s evil.

I agree

I happen to love Roger Howarth and I also hate Cyrus and after Sonny gave him that warning last week, I bet I know who his next victim will be. He can’t let Sonny get away with what he threatened him with and not retaliate in sone way. Sonny should not have opened his mouth.

Roger Howarth does lying near dead in a pool of blood quite well I guess. ‍♂️

Yup. I agree

Why are they always kill off Rodger

Hopefully he will pass and Franco will return.

I Rather see Todd Manning, he played him well. But hope they do something because a good actor thats been around for yrars should have great storylines. Not boring BS

I’m with you, Denise!!! I have wanted that for years now!!

Todd Manning will never return.

He played all his roles amazing I love that actor

Absolutely. Then he can get back with Blair !

I agree! Howarth is one of my favorite actors and I would love for him to get a storyline he can sink his teeth into. Still, I’d rather see him as Austin than not see him at all!

Nah. It’s time for Roger Howarth to exit. Cast needs to be trimmed and role repeaters should be the FIRST to go.

Maybe it is Dex on Sunny’s orders

Doubt it. We have already seen on several occasions how useless Dex is with a gun. Yeah, he’s a “military combat veteran”, like I’m the first chair harp player in Heaven’s symphony orchestra.

No one takes a hit like Dex. So far the only one he’s been able to beat is Spencer. LOL

I think it’s Cyrus. He’s more of killing kind more than Nicolas

Nope I don’t think it’s Cyrus

Definitely not Cyrus himself. He was meeting with Laura at the time, and she’s a solid alibi. Nobody in Port Charles would doubt her at all.

Cyrus is il Capo—hr would never do such a menial task as killing someone. He has little mafiosi doing that for him.
Call me crazy but I like him . Sonny is not impressive. He ‘s lost his oomph…

Funny, everyone seems to be ignoring this fact of Cyrus being with Laura and are still chanting, it’s Cyrus, it’s Cyrus! I still think it’s Nicolas, especially when Austin saw the person and said ” what are YOU doing here”? At least we know it was someone he knew and not a” hit man”.

I agree.

Give Roger a better role. If they can not bring back Todd because of his rapist past create a role that lets him use his considerable talent

NO! He does NOT need a FOURTH role on this soap. Cut him loose.

So that would be Roger’s 4th character on GH ” create a role that let’s him use his considerable talent .”

I really love Roger Howarth, but Austin has been a bust from the get go, I perplex, the character is supposed to be a Quatermaine, yet he’s treated like shit by them, and just about every Quatermaine is a bastard by definition, yet this one is like a pariah, I really can’t figure out why Theydon’t care for him yet Drew is treated like his shit don’t stink, its confusing. regardless big mistake the show made by killing off Franco. How will they fix this? is the show planning of having Roger play different characters? I mean at this point who would care?

Despite how dull his current portrayer is, Drew is Alan’s biological son. And decedents of Alan or Tracy will always be more welcomed than the Holt or Ward offspring.

As good as Roger is, unless we get Todd back, now’s probably a good time for him to take a long break from the show. The only other character I can see him playing is Steven Lars Webber, but who would you pair him with romantically?

Certainly not that jailhouse looking mama the last guy was married to!

2023 has allowed posts to use profanity to make a point…where were you scholled?

I agree

I believe it’s Cyrus , if it were Ava , she would have shot him a long time ago when Sonny told her that she sleeping or slept with the enemy , and Sonny explain who Austin’s boss is . So it couldn’t be Ava , now it could be Nikolas, cuz Nikolas knows that Austin saved his life , his cousin Mason is in jail , so that leaves Cyrus , why I say it’s Cryus ? Cryus told Mason that he’s going to be taken care of in jail and he might come home sooner than he thinks , and Mason told Cryus what about Austin , Cyrus replied that he’s going to get his real soon . So now you think about it .

WSB, look closely and it’s the same guys that burned Anna’s house.

No it’s not none of them ,they want us to think this it’s someone else

I don’t care. I’d just like to say “thank you” to them.

If this is Roger’s swan song as Austin, I would love to see him come back as Todd Manning or even for us to find out that Franco didn’t really die. As we all know from watching them long enough, they can make anything happen in soaps if they really want to.

The Austin character was a bust from the word go. The whole “Is he really a Quartermaine?” story that went around and around, and ultimately ended up going nowhere, the failed pairing with Maxie, they might have had something with Austin and Britt, but then Kelly Thiebaud left the show.

They never really defined who the character was or why we should care about him. They never had much for him to do, other than in these past few months. I liked the potential of Ava and Austin together, Maura and Roger have great chemistry. But they ruined any chance of that. Poor writing and lack of character development. Roger is too talented, he deserves better.

As for who shot Austin, how about the long rumored to be returning Lorenzo Alcazar? Ted King pretty much confirmed that he had met with Frank Valentini a few months ago, so the timing would make sense. Alcazar could be the one above Cyrus that has been pulling the strings behind the scenes for all these months. He was a great villain on GH, I’d love to see it.

I have had the same hope. Alcazar. With good base writing, Roger Howarth and Ted King? Wow!

Why would Alcazar shoot Austin?

As of yet there’s no known connection between the “Pawtuck Mafia” and the shadowy mercenary contractor group known as “Pikeman”, which almost certainly is a front for Alcazar.

That’s why Cyrus the Virus ordered “Betty” the fake nanny to steal the Pikeman info from Sonny’s laptop, which she did – not knowing that info was completely false and planted there on purpose.

If Alcazar/Pikeman was already working with the “Pawtuck Mafia” such an operation would not have been necessary, as Cyrus would have already been in the loop. .

Now that said, I DO believe that Alcazar is either in… or very near Port Charles. He’s probably the guy who called Mikey from a Washington DC 202 area code, to tell him Nina was the SEC snitch. And I’m thinking he’s the “mystery buyer” who’s trying to acquire Wyndemere & Spoon Island. Because if you were a reclusive billionaire running a secret mercenary weapons smuggling business, and were supposed to be dead, wouldn’t YOU want to live in a castle on a private island??

Todd Manning

This character was poorly conceived and written from day one.

That is too ridiculous to think it would be Ava, shotting Nickolas that would be expected shooting Austin hes not the guy in charge theres no point. She has way to much to lose Sonny will handle all this for her.

Enough is Enough. 11 years. 3 characters. Move on from Roger Howarth for the love of god. This isn’t OLTL. That isn’t Todd. Use the money freed up from his exit to recast for Lucky and Lulu. Austin isn’t needed.

The shoes are the clue, they are the same as the arsonist who destroyed Anna’s home. Willing to bet they belong to Nickalas trying to frame Ava

My thoughts exactly!!

That’s my guess. That will eventually illiminate Nicholas also when they catch himl

The biggest error they made with Austin was not making him Franco’s actual twin – the one he believed was Jason (who was really Drew), but turned out not to be. It would have made far more sense for other characters to recognize that Austin looks identical to Franco, and it would have thrown Roger back into Elizabeth’s orbit, where he shined brightest.

It also would have made Franco an actual Quartermaine, like he believed he always was, by being Jimmy Lee’s son. The story could have been that Jimmy Lee and Heather Webber had an affair, one twin was given to Jimmy and Charity to raise and the other was given to Betsy Frank. That way, both Franco and Austin could have been tied to the Q’s, and maybe we could have avoided this whole “cousin Mason” story, which was a total flop.

Also, off topic, but can we please get a new Drew? Or, take him off the canvas? I’ve really tried with Cameron Matheson but he just doesn’t fit the role the same way Billy Miller (RIP) did. Same with both Marcus Coloma and Adam Huss as Nikolas. If they are serious about bringing core characters back, they need to hire actors who can fully embody the role. Makes me nervous about the eventual Lulu recast…

Interesting hypothesis, but they spent a lot of time making Franco a Baldwin and Howarth and Shriner play off each other extremely well. Twins would’ve been fine, but Scott would’ve had to be the dad. In second thought, after the fact, on Heather’s front, it would’ve been awkward for her to have 3 kids the audience never knew about (Franco, Esme – and in your theory Austin).

My guess is Nicolas

I think it is Nicholas who shot him. I believe he seen Austin at Ava’s and decided Austin has lied to much and taking him out!

I hope Austin doesn’t die. I am tired of killing off Roger’s character and bringing him back as another one, but I don’t want to lose him. He’s way too talented and Austin was at his best when he was with Ava.

Seeing those black sneakers, I thought it might be Nikolas. but then I figured he really didn’t have any reason to shoot Austin. He already let his mother know he was alive. And then I thought it might be Betty doing Cyrus’ dirty work. Mason should already be at Pentonville and Cyrus would want to keep his hands “clean” by having his minion do his dirty work.

IDK. It’s as good a guess as saying Blair did it.

Wow ,no spoiler alerts showed or predicted Austin being shot.

It’s Nickolas.

What channel do general Hospital come on now in Palm Beach County?

I want to believe…because he is a good actor, he was wearing a vest and the blood was fake to make the shooter think he did his job. Austin will tell the truth.

No, Roger’s contract was not renewed. It is in the news now.

I say Nicholas

I would automatically say that Cyrus killed Austin but wasn’t he with Laura at the time?

Yeah. Laura’s about the best alibi you could have in Port Charles. Of course that doesn’t mean Cyrus couldn’t have hired somebody else to do it. Probably would have been Mason, except he’s back in prison & still recovering from bullet wounds.

With any luck it was Todd Manning who shot Austin. I’ve been a fan of Roger since he debut on OLTL back in 93.But since he been in Port Charles his characters that he had to play has been questionable. He started off strong as Todd and I thought he was going to take over P.C. for a second but then he left and returned as Franco! Ugh! And then hooks up with Elizabeth…. What a bore!

Why would Todd shoot Austin? For stealing his face??

Too bad you didn’t enjoy and understand this family dynamic. It was far from boring . Too bad you couldn’t appreciate what it was all about.

I think it was Cyrus because before he went to the PCPS he had a confrontation with Cyrus. So I think it was Cyrus

So he gets shot last Friday and nothing about it on Monday s show and Tuesday previews mention nothing. Perfect symbolism to a character no one cares about. Best wishes Roger Howarth. You’ve deserved better .

I’m not sure who it is but, I think it’s the same person that took the shot at the pool, and I think the same person that burned down Anna’s house. They have the same shoes.

I noticed those brown boots/shoes too, they were not worn by a 15 yr. Old girl.

More importantly who çares? Can some kill off the awful Drewfus too?

I wouldn’t worry too much probably in six months Frank will bring him back as another character!

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

Published

on

By

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

Photo: JPI

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

Published

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.

Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.

As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY

Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.

Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS

Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.

In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Courtesy/ABC

Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”

So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.
