‘General Hospital’s’ Rory Gibson Opens Up About Falling on Hard Times After Being Let Go by ‘The Young and the Restless’

Before Rory Gibson won everyone’s hearts as the new Michael Corinthos on General Hospital in 2025, from 2021-2023, he played the role of Sharon and Nick’s son, Noah Newman on The Young and the Restless, where he essentially went from contract to recurring to never seen again on the CBS soap opera.

Now, on the latest episode of Maurice Benard’s (Sonny Corinthos, GH) mental health You Tube series, State of Mind, the three-time Daytime Emmy-winning star welcomed his new TV son to the hot seat where they discussed a myriad of topics including; Rory’s tough upbringing and the difficult challenges he faced when he became an out of work actor smack dab around the time of the SAG/AFTRA actors strike in 2023.

For the first time publicly, Gibson opened up about the subject, and how he and his longtime girlfriend and fiancée, Alicia Ruela fell on very hard times, and how things ended at Y&R.

Photo: JPI

Rory shared, “Things got real, real bumpy for a while because we hit the strikes. I’ve never shared this publicly, but me and my fiancée (Alicia Ruela) were essentially homeless.”

Next, Gibson elaborated, “I was doing Y&R and then I went recurring, and I was working here and there for a little while. Then, I booked one really big one – a small role in like the Zack Snyder movie (Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire). I was pumped on it. Then, I kept testing for these big projects. I kept testing. I’m (feeling I’m) on the right road, and the (actors) strikes hit, and everything shuts down. Simultaneously, I’m not getting called in for Y&R anymore. So, all of a sudden everything goes dry. I already wasn’t making a ton of money. It got to a point where she (Alicia) was modeling professionally and that dried up too. Neither of us were making any money and we couldn’t afford a rent, and we had to bounce out. We were couch-surfing for almost a year.”

Photo: JPI

Gibson then recalled how things began to get back on track, “So that was most of 2023 and then in 2024, I ended up getting back to work as a trainer at Barry’s Bootcamp gym. It like I was resetting in a strange way. I started working there again, started doing my thing, and the industry was still really slow. Slowly, it started to pick up and life got kind of comfortable again. It was this weird acceptance of like, I’m pursuing the thing that I love (acting) and that I want to do, and that I want to make something out of my my life with, and I want to enjoy what I do while simultaneously having to accept the fact that its going to come with a lot of trials and tribulations.”

Photo: ABC

Reflecting back on hitting almost rock bottom and being scrappy and keeping his dreams alive, Rory added, “In hindsight, you look back on it and say, ‘If I hadn’t essentially been let go from Y&R and say, if I hadn’t had to couch surf for a year, and if I wasn’t broke, and I didn’t have to go through all the other stuff too,” that perhaps what awaited him wouldn’t have come.

Photo: ABC

Gibson explained, “It was just through the past five or six years of these really big ups, and then here were a lot of really lows. We lost a lot of people, and we lost dogs, and it was a weird time, but then especially getting off of Y&R, and being broke, and trying to figure everything out. Say I was still doing that show (Y&R) and everyone there is lovely. I appreciate them beyond belief. They gave me my first big job, but maybe things would’ve been the same. I wasn’t feeling terribly fulfilled over there. It wasn’t the most ideal situation for me. Whereas now (at General Hospital) it kind of does feel that way. I feel extremely fulfilled.”

You can check out the full conversation between Rory and Maurice on State of Mind below.

So, what are your thoughts on Rory Gibson opening up and sharing what  many people have gone through at one time in their lives  when they fall on hard times? What did you think about the sentiments he expressed, that in a way, he was not feeling fulfilled with what they were giving him to play as Noah Newman in high contrast to now being front and center as Michael Corinthos on General Hospital? Let us know in the comment section.

I’m glad things are better for him.

Feel bad to hear about his bout with being homeless And yand r so misused him they way they’ve done to 100 others! Even though I don’t watch gh I wish him nothing but the best in the role of Michael Corinthos

Agree!

It actually seems that Y and R doesn’t know what to do with ANY of the characters in the younger generation(s)

I’m 54, and I was just at a fantastic family destination wedding this weekend. The Father of the Bride being my Cousin Once Removed, and the Bride being my second cousin. I was able to enjoy talking with the grandparents, parents generation, bride and groom’s generation since they are literally 25 years younger than me, as well as have some fun with the little ones who were there. That’s 5 generations of enjoyment, and many many stories were told as we all got to know each other with awesome fun and celebration.

I simply do not understand why anyone under 35/40 years of age is not featured. Don’t we need some young love stories for future weddings and babies rather than corporate mergers and acquisitions???

Anyways, you GO Rory!!! You ROCK as Michael on GH, and so glad you you have new beginnings on all accounts, both personal and professional. Keep up that fantastic job!!!

So glad you had a nice time at wedding ! It seems they don’t understand the name of the show is young and the restless . At a recent party for Nikki not one of her grandchildren was in attendance except Claire who became there grandchild 15 minutes ago ! They are certainly not writing for the future

And they just killed off Chance and Damien (and Cole – to ultimately become a grandfather to Claire’s kids). None of it makes any sense. At least GH understands the need for drama around young love and have developed the younger generations, and Rory as Michael will definitely help continue that.

Happy you had a wonderful time at the wedding, Margherita.

I’m a talker and hope i’m civil to you also everyone who read it. I don’t meant to be rude or cold. Sorry for that!

I don’t agree with Claire it is in her right to be there but you have good point on not inviting Nikki’s other grandchildren on the party. It’s not the first time

At a recent party for Nikki not one of her grandchildren was in attendance except Claire who became there grandchild 15 minutes ago ! They are certainly not writing for the future

Remember the anniversary of Victor and Nikki. Neither of grandchildren of them were there just Harrison who isn’t their grandson. The anniversary didn’t finish it was all about kidnapping Harrison & Summer and Kyle right away. To me it was bad.

Foreign fans were roasting Y&R because they didn’t do research on the adoption in foreign. Major fans sided I saw and other fans were insulting them. It was nasty!

But I wanna keep it positive. Team Rory/Michael(GH)

Agree, His story about being homeless moved me. He is magic in GH and has chemistry with everyone. I’m a fan of him but indeed Y&R misused Rory. Did it with Kelsey too as other. Picked AL/MM over it where a lot of actors and actress were pushed back previous years in stories. Now AL/CF are gone too. I feel bad for them because the Skyle fanbase/fans and media behaviour that ruined for everyone. They never get called out but attacking people personal who spoke against them. The same people are doing it with Haley Erin that doesn’t like something they see.

The world is full of crueilty what cruelity or obsessive nature can do to people over a soap, ship and character you love. That others don’t like or like instead of enjoying while those who act do/tries their best. If we had no soaps what would we watch then.

Y&R has not known what to do with the character of Noah, since he became an adult. Which is a shame, because he could be a positive voice and a new generation of the Newmans. I am glad things are going well for Rory Gibson. From what I hear, he is killing it as Michael.

Rory Gibson was only cast in the role of Noah when Michael Mealor quit as Kyle Abbott, and when Mealor came back, Josh Griffith clearly had no need to keep Gibson in the role of Noah.

Two different characters and two different families. Y&R is in need of young blood and storylines. If a person has the talent and given the opportunity, they can shine. Anyway, it’s great that things have turned around for Rory Gibson.

I respect Scotts comment, but well put. Lewis. Y&R wasted Alison Lanier and Connor Floyd. They could have done more with characters they played. I saw chemistry of both and saw why the fans loved them too much. You know with storylines and finallly a Newman/Chancellor blood. There is enough Newman/Abbott blood. Harrison and Dominic aren their bio children. They still can do that by undoing Chance death. Recast Chance and Summer so they can find happiness. Y&R need a new producer other than Griffith and good writers. To end this! I love how GH and fans embraced Rory.

As a fan of GH. I know a lot in en outs on Y&R. It was repeatability about Michael Mealor/Alison Lanier. Summer and Kyle. It will be again if Y&R recast Summer with a new actress. I know how fans are feeling for not giving Rory neither Kelsey. AL Neither CF a chance for their character they play. The pairing which fans love to grow. Those who are attacking other over something they like or Claire& Kyle. Is low level.

I don’t like Willow and Michael. Each to his own but I don’t attack their fans or other over opinions or such. Not like that!

I don’t see anyone attacking anyone here. ???

Thrilled to watch Rory as Michael. The experiences that he had to endure made
him the fabulous actor he is now!!! Seeing
Emmy in his future!!!

Well said

I am glad things worked out for him; I slowly warmed to him on The Young and the Restless (although Robert Adamson held my heart), and when Chad Duell (whom I loved) announced his exit from the role of Michael on General Hospital, I had a small chance of hope Adamson would reprise the role again (my dream Michael recast), but alas, Rory Gibson came into the role and has smashed my expectations. He was meant to be in the role of Michael. Meant to be.

Wow! High praise indeed coming from you- loved the build up. I agree with your every word.

Happy for Rory Gibson! He’s good at GH Love Michael. I’m a GH fan.

I’ve read negative things overall about Y&R mainly fans/fanbase. Fans have right to judge a fanbase and media. Fans have right to complain about a fanbase and media. Major fans were victimized and were personally attack by fans huge/small followings or not, the fanbase over an opinion because they didn’t like Skyle. Because fans felt AL/MM were given to much attention, stories and publicty over other favorites actors or characters who were less given a story. Because of this Rory Gibson and Kelly wang are gone as Allie & Noah who were never given a chance. fans felt. Because of this Alison Lanier and Connor floyd are gone because fans liked Summer and Chance who also was never given a chance. Fans felt. It was about Skyle. The same fans, Summer and Kyle fans doing it again with Haley Erin because they don’t like Claire and Kyle. I like them together. Blame the show at the fullest but mostly the fans/fanbase/media played a role for hurting other fans.

People get you are fan of ships or not. But If you can’t take no or disagreement for a answer that people want something different then don’t watch! But this attacking personally crosses a line which never has been called out.

I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason; good or bad. Everything happens in God’s time. I am glad you are getting back on track. You are killing the roll of Michael. The fans gain and others loss.

His story moved me still and is killiing the role as Michael indeed. I agree with your comment.

Y&R has someone young talented as Michael Mealor too. I feel he isn’t on the right place and the show is wasting him so much while i see more in him. Same as Alison Lanier. Put her on Days!!

The bold and the beautiful has talented actors/actresses too. B&B is destroying them while they giving everything they can in a bad storyline =(

I saw that episode of State of Mind. Appreciated his honesty and love Rory as Michael. He deserves all good experiences after what he went through. The cream rises to the top.

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

Published

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

Photo: JPI

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

Published

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.

Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.

As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY

Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.

Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS

Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.

In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Courtesy/ABC

Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”

So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.
