General Hospital: Stalkers … Gawkers …Talkers … You Never Know Who's Watching!

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

The action heats up for the rest of the week on General Hospital after Jason (Billy Miller) and Franco (Roger Howarth) get into a heated argument.

What follows in the latest promo from ABC is that someone is watching Sam (Kelly Monaco) and Jason, Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) tries to mount a defense for Carlos (Jeffrey Vincent Parise), Julian (William deVry) is in major hot water, and Andre (Anthony Montgomery) and Jordan  (Vinessa Antoine) have sex!

The new teaser has the voice-over saying:  “Stalkers … gawkers … talkers!” Butt he big question is … who is spying on Sam and Jason? From all accounts and previews it would seem that it will turn out to be Franco.

Meanwhile, are you hoping Andre and Jordan, or Andre and Anna (Finola Hughes) end up together …  or is neither the right lady for the GH shrink? Is Alexis’ marriage to Julian about to go bust, and could Nina (Michelle Stafford) actually end up having a fling with Julian, or help bring him down once and for all?  Share your thoughts and theories on the latest GH storylines in the comment section below, and check out the latest promo.

I think Jasam’s stalker will be the little girl that Sam and Jason took in after baby Lila passed. With Sorasing, Hope should be around 15 or 16 years old by now. Just an educated guess is all.

This show is a mess. There are an infinite amount of useless characters on GH right now, more than there ever have been. Jordan and Andre are both boring and have no ties to the canvas, they need to go. Carlos needs to escape and take Sabrina with him out of town, for good this time. Get rid of Valerie, Curtis, Kiki and Hayden.

Franco and Nina are getting more tolerable, but they better not go down the psycho-Franco road again with him and Jason. That storyline was terrible back when James Franco played the role, and even though I wish Roger Howarth was brought back in some other tole than Franco, the character is starting to find his footing (only took 3 years). But if he begins getting obsessed with Jason again, it will send viewers into a tailspin.

Couldn’t agree with you more on all your points with on exception. I’m liking the chemistry between Kiki and Dylan! Can’t wait for Morgan to get out of the asylum and get consumed with jealousy! Then there would be this intense rivalry between Dylan and Morgan with Michael caught in the middle. I’d be on Team Dylan!

Patrick
Patrick

OK… now I have “one” exception…. ie: MIchael

I’m so over.. when he plays the moral compass… with Morgan… especially when he has scenes as the dutiful older brother… and son…. with Carly

argh! Morgan has to be sick of these scenes. done

I like your one exception… I have really come to “adore” Kiki… she’s a starlet

I like how she seems “shy” and enamored with Dillan… and he’s definitely struck by her

I’ve posted how I’d love to see Kiki out of the Corinthos’ orbit…

BUT… Morgan always finds his way… interesting

I still wish they hadn’t of made this storyline… like father like son…

argh! the Corinthos are just not all their

The show IS a mess. Where is Laura? YES–please let Carlos take Sabrina away AGAIN–this time FOREVER–because it looks like TPTB are going to twist the storyline around and say it was NOT Carlos who shot Duke.(Did you notice that Carlos NEVER says he did it; he always evades. I’m suspicious. And I still say TPTB missed the boat by not keeping Carlos–the actor is perfect for daytime–has the fire necessary to sustain a character–a good one, with complications of course–lol.

One good thing happened today; it looks like (on the promi) that Tracy is going to get rid of DR.O FANTASTIC–stop that craziness now. She NEVER should have been made head of the hospital–laughable and plain CRAZY move. Made the whole show into a CARTOON.

Again, I say: WHERE IS LAURA AND WHERE IS HER STORY? SHE is NOT a cartoon character–no matter how they have attempted to slaughter her character. Yes, I said ‘SLAUGHTER!

Harry
Harry

It’s been horrid–I think the snowball effect of making those murderers, Sonny and Jason, the heroes of the show way back in Guza’s time, has created an avalanche of disastrous proportions with the two subsequent head writers following the bad example he set. Aside from the two aforementioned killers, you have Dr O, the psychopathic, sadistic shrew running the hospital, Franco, the raping, serial killing sociopath working at the hospital as an art therapist, Nina, the kidnapping mental case running Crimson, Ava, the murdering mobstress and her murdering brother running around enjoying their freedom and their children. Murderers never receive justice and their spouses sacrifice their sense of ethics and morals to be with them.
Yes, I know Luke Spencer was an anti-hero, and he was a deeply flawed character. But he externalized that internal battle between good and bad and viewers got to be part of it, rooting him on when the good triumphed over the bad.
Now, there is no sense of gratification which usually comes in the guise of second hand vindication and the murdering scum bags roam around as if they were the good guys.

I agree Nancy. I was so excited when I saw Laura together with Dr. Kevin. I think they make a good couple, and he could help her figure out Helena’s message. We haven’t seen them since?

Patrick
Patrick

I agree… about Laura… I was immediately… taken… when Dr. Kevin Collins
happened on the scene… giddy

I think he’d be a GOOD match for her

I like your prop of Carlos:

“…TPTB missed the boat by not keeping Carlos–the actor is perfect for daytime–has the fire necessary to sustain a character–a good one, with complications ”

IF GH insists that Sabrina is a MUST… ( I have learned to really like her)

surprisingly… she’s matured and is even too good for Michael… and I wanted them to be a couple… if it solidified Sabrina staying on the show

IF… and I hope GH just up and gives Carlos a life in Port Charles… with Sabrina… bring on the complications… he’s FUN to watch and REELS with the whole cast… OK.. we’ve all read this multiple times

the three couples that GH insists on featuring… is what’s throwing this show in a tailspin… spiraling

Sonny and Carly
Jason and Sam
Julian and Alexis

they trot out Carly to get in every ONE’s face… I think GH is going to try and force Carly on Dr. Finn… just like they forced her with Jason… HER “bff”

they show Jason one upping his bravado and manhood… all the time
I so agree with you tho… Billy Miller looks dumbstruck with his scripts.

the coupling these two “constantly” do … woah stop … watching Alexis brag to her daughters… oy! stop

thank the serial heavens for Tracy and the Quartermaine

they need to stop Dr. Griffin from going too far on the forgiveness thing… and MOVE his character … is he ??? in transition… that thread just had me rolling LOL
get him involved… with … Liz or Nathan… just delve in to what’s happening… this thing and or borderline thing with Anna… alright already… the whole town knows your Duke’s “son”… they need to capitalize on how quickly the audience took to him

OK big disgruntle… i’m “over” Sonny and his mobster manic … honestly ! it’s LOL to watch his character machismo… when he’s not being “respected”
rolling… especially when he’s in a tizzy about Julian and Carlos…

has any one ever noticed in his scenes with Kristina… it seems like he always has this “ready to laugh” when he plays out this is she or isn’t she a lesbian… I find that to be REALLY OFFPUTTING…

at least GH seems to be having Sonny “back off” of his kids relationships.. and they really have him lathered up back in the mob… theatrics indeed

that felt good.

BRING BACK :

Mac and Felicia
Brad and Lucas
Bobbie… just bring her back.. she should fight with Laura over Kevin
Heather Webber any one ?

GH ! do not lose momentum… lay off of this stupid Jason and Sam involved any where near Franco… Roger Howarth is just too good to waste… Liz is ON

I agree with most of your post except Nu Kiki has grown and her and Dillon have possibilities, for sure.

Franco and Jason will heat up and then Roger and Billy’s contracts will expire!

dmr
dmr

Absolutely agree, Jimmy. The show is in dire straits. It’s awful. I find it to be very boring and/or nauseating Most of the characters are awful, as are the storylines. Characters are seen and then not heard of/from again for weeks or months even and storylines are dropped. It’s a complete travesty.

Sam and Jason make me sick..
I hope whomever the stalker is has a bullet with Sam written on it ahaa!
I like Billy/Jason but when yuck Sam is in the frame with Jason I gotta FF, and that makes me really poed..

I hope Franco’s tumor has grown back and he will WOW me with his hidden darkside..

Julian, Sonny and Carlos– if they are going to portray them as mobsters then do it and stop making them pansies..

(( of course Alexis and Julian’s marriage will end.. the day they got married they have been written to part – soap writing 101 .. we all know that..

I like Jason and Franco getting ready to dance, that’s about it for now..

nancy dillingham

Julian IS in the mob. Surprised? NOT!

Alexis IS stupid. Surprised? NOT!

Harry
Harry

Right, Nancy. And now NLG is acting all shocked that Julian is a bad guy. She KNEW he ordered the hit on Duke before she married him.

Patrick
Patrick

yeah, it was only a matter of time… for NLG to pull out her supreme court Justice robe

I mean really… her daughters know she’s up to the gills in MOB…

for the first time… Molly has disappointed me… she just went way overboard the other day… her tirade even made me angered…

who speaks to their parents that way

which was all just a snowball affect to Alexis seeing her marriage crumble… so quickly

Timmm
Timmm

Notice when a “Mobster” kills a main character they are always written into redemption! Julian will kill this punk kid who witnessed Duke’s killing because the character is a no name and fell no remorse!

su0000

hey Timmm..
the ”punk kid” is probably a step in cameraman getting his 15 minutes of fame .. ahaa!

We’ve just gone through a long, dreary winter in real life on many fronts, and it’s not over yet. So this is not the news I wanted to hear or look forward to. Hoped never to see a reboot of Franco/Sam/Jason story. Ugly story. And in general, not too warm and fuzzy about “stalkers, gawkers, talkers” scenarios.

Andre is ok but he hasnt much chemistry with Anna or Jordan…i actually like Anna and Paul…Andre and Jordan have sex-i find that laughable and not in a good way…like a couple in bed suppose to mean something-its only a filler moment-maybe if Andre and Anna were becoming a couple and she finds him in bed with Jordan(her friend) then that is a story but just showing a couple in bed isn’t… Andre and Jordan are barely together and already they are in bed?-again no romance there…it would be nice to have them go out-dinner? A movie? Dancing? but i guess that is impossible for todays writers to write…its lets just put them in bed and thats all they need to do to prove they are a couple?…Now ive seen many bedroom moments in my 50 plus years of soap watching but in the golden oldies days couples had their moments before ending up in bed but today its like no one would watch that-WRONG!!!…its Nathan and Maxie talking in bed or Jason and Sam and so on…good to see Jason and Franco in a fight but i find the confrontation scene a little weak-Billy Miller is a fine actor but he doesnt do toughness very well here..in any case GH is ok and i dont watch everyday but im like that with Days too but both shows could use a little humor every now and then but not too much campiness…hope thats Helena watching…bring back crazy Heather-she needs to knock off Nina-at least try to….jmho

Totally agree with everything you’ve said. What happened to anticipation and longing in love stories…I guess modern attention spans just don’t welcome that.. I do disagree about Billy’s angry scenes, though. He scares me a little, in the best way, that is. His anger turns me on. But I digress.

Harry
Harry

Agree, BUTT, I have a question for Mr Michael Fairman. Were you engaging in word play when you wrote “butt” in the above posted blog?

Rodd
Rodd

Take a look at the hands of the person in the hoodie. They don’t belong to Franco. They look feminine; and I know they could always do that to deliberately throw us off, but I think it’s that new character, Amy or Liz.

I hope Andre and Jordan end up together. I like seeing Anna in the cat-and-mouse game with Paul, not that I want them as the end-game.

As for Alexis and Julian, I hope that battle through this latest crisis. The same goes for Franco and Nina. Until there is concerted effort to resolve any problems, I’d be more interested in watching these couples try and work things through; not give up after one week of fighting.

nancy dillingham
nancy dillingham

I hope Alexis and Julian DO NOT battle through “this latest crisis.” Wasn’t their marriage in crisis? LOL!

Patrick
Patrick

love your first para… had me laughing… in a very good way

I do not want to see Franco with feminine hands… I am really excited about how the new station nurse… ala Amy Vining… WHAT A GREAT IDEA, GH ! I hope she can act her socks off… this should really be a big hit… if her acting chops trigger

I don’t think Anna is going to end up with either… Andre or Paul… love how she said… ??? how she abandoned her ethics… that she would never “murder” any one… and this went a long way… in helping me along… with this convoluted mess…

OK… I love that GH may be “redeeming” Carlos… because Jeffrey Vincent Parise.. is exceptional ACTING… he’s capable of mix and mingling with the whole cast… just turn the page… and get him back… I think he’d be a great love interest and potential…. with all the women… he has a dastardly charm… he has to be making people laugh….his thin swag is omnipresent…

thanks to Finola Hughes… acting tour de force to get out of this story and move on now… we know the pain she’s been in… and just as Carlos told her right out of the cellblock… Duke was no saint… he was in the mob… and it could have been either or… with the gun shots….

I read in a recent SOD issue…how Finola Hughes mentioned… what fun scenes she shared with JVP…

I will say… what is the point in featuring… Sonny and Anna ??? after this Carlos story wraps up… and Anna finding he way back to justice and right side of the law… she and Sonny have no reason to mix …. I saw this as just another reason GH continues to prop Sonny and Carly all over the canvas

as for Julian and Alexis… can we say… Nina… falls in love and passion ignites and affair ensues rightfully !

GH is in the right path tho… in trying with everything the writers can muster… to redeem the spiral… Franco and Nina have been in. two solid actors … for whatever reason…the audience jus hated… never took… I love Roger Howarth and Michelle Stafford…

answer: Julian and Nina…. Franco and Liz

as for your point….. wow this show has problems

in couples working things out…. that seems to be happening.. and will happen… for Maxie and Nathan… and Lulu and Dante.. which I’ve posted is fine.. by me… as GH needs some happy couples.. by the same token… this writing regime.. doesn’t know what to do with their couples

these writers are spinning and turning… so off chart… lost course… HELP!

I know, I just HATE being teased! One thing for sure, you know the eyewitness to Duke’s murder will be the one killed and not Carrrrlos. It was stupid of the Jordan [Not too bright anyway!] to let the key witness wander off into the dark. Wouldnt you want to protect him? DUMB! If Julian had any balls he would kill Carlos AND Anna MAY just have an ounce of gratitude towards him. An OUNCE!

Well, since GH is touting a couple of new characters coming on, I’ll take a wild guess that it’s one of them. I hope it’s not Franco..Isn’t there a middle ground between making him mischievous or a raving maniac? Doesn’t look like it so far.

Mary SF
Mary SF

Jordan has a thing for her ex brother in law Curtis, so the fact she has sex with Andre means nothing–I think her and Curtis will eventually be paired off. I don’t like Anna with any of the men mentioned, I think she had more chemistry with Faison- she is strong powerful woman and all these men seem like wimps next to her even Paul–now Anna with Sonny or Julien would be interesting, but I think hell would have to freeze over for either one of those pairing to fly. Don’t like dark Franco, nor did I like vanilla, Franco, there has to be something in the middle right? Jason was more interesting when he was Jake Doe- now that he is Jason he needs a story line other than sleeping with Sam all the time– new pairings that have possibility Kiki and Dylan; Tracy and Finn; Kristina and Griffin (if he is transgender and she is fluid they will make the most unique couple on daytime)

Patrick
Patrick

I really am so nonplussed… with Hayden… now… because of how disrespectful.. she’s been with Nicholas… OK.. Nicholas has a let in not thinking with his head

for that matter… Hayden… and it was going going HOT… and now… I don’t care if Nicholas and Hayden ever get back together

to do this… I truly thought… Hayden and Curtis have a sensual chemistry that could be worth exploring

but I also see Curtis involved with Jordan… this could be a triangle worth exploring

I hope someone agrees.. that it’s a little too late… for Nicholas to take Hayden back

move on my man…

what about… Nicholas Olivia and Ned… LOL

rambling… anything to get Hayden out of Nicholas life

Valerie needs to stay. Valerie needs a better storyline. I like Kiki and Dillon together. As long as they keep Valerie and Dillon stay out of Dante and Lulu orbit then they should be good to go. I just find Dante and Lulu and Nathan and Maxie boring.

nellie
nellie

I could not agree with you more. Lulu and Dante are a whiny couple. They need to take a trip around the world like forever.

Patrick
Patrick

I like Valerie… I think she’s CUTE as a button… especially when her hair is straightened out and when she’s gussied up… WOW

although… i’m always reminded… how it seems Brads ex-wife… Rosalie was passed over.. when Valerie happened on the scene…

which is neither here nor there.. but the actor who plays Rosalie… for me was a surefire hit

I don’t expect that Valerie.. well ever play center stage… but she has a presence that’s not offputting in any way… not “meh” either

when a character is intriguing…that should bode well for her character.. I like the thing she has … with Curtis

I sometimes find Dante and Lulu… and Maxie and Nathan… to be so bubblegum

that I’m even glad that Dillon is out of that scenery… so here’s hoping.. Dillon and Kiki spark

Aria
Aria

I know that the bread n butter of soaps is couples but omg can we please stop trying to pair Anna right now with anyone on the canvas, I don’t think any guy right for her is right and Andre is to boring, Paul is to weasel like, unless they bring back Robert or create a character similar to Robert then right now there’s no one, plus try to remember back in the Anna days, she’s a one women gal, she’s not into triangles or stealing some women’s men.. Anna always had one guy and the rest were either exes or just friends. She never gave Mac, frisco,or Sean any mix signals, they were just her guy friends so let’s keep it that way with her new guy friends like Dante, griffin, Nate, Andre and even sonny now. Bring Robert back or get some hot loyal kick ass wsb guy to come in.. Big no to Andre and Paul !

Timmm
Timmm

Aria, thats a great idea, if Tristan Rogers is not coming back, create an older “Robert Like” gentlemen from the WSB days to buddy up with her against Paul and then fall in love with him.

Li
Li

Ok my turn- I am a devoted GH fan, but the show is terrible right now. No intriguing storyline at all…
I like Sam and Jason but please spice it up some!!!
Valerie is useless, so is Sabrina and Carlos, and so is Nathan. I like the new doctor, looking forward to that story and finding out what is up with him. Lucas, Felix, and Christina are unnecessary. I love Dylan – he is hot! Maybe when he gets it on with Kiki that could be fun! I liked Nina and Franco, but I just wish he could be normal and not change again to being psycho as it looks like they are doing. Dr. O- go away, she is not needed anymore. Anna is pivotal but the DA is too much. Dante and Lulu need to move to a house and start a normal life and stop living in a studio with a kid. Julian and Alexis are great, why do we have to bring him back to the mob for her to have another heartache?
UGH!
Like someone else said- too many people on the show, you can ‘t get into any story, they are just all mediocre! Come on GH! Frankly I am still bitter we lost Patrick and Connie/Kate (she was a dynamite actress)!
Carly and Ava and Sonny and Maxie are fantastic talent- give them something good to work with!

Timmm
Timmm

Li, your right, too many characters! Scotty Baldwin has great chemistry with Franco, Laura and Kevin were intriguing and I love Ric Lansing. USE THEM!

Alan
Alan

I hope neither woman ends up with Andre — he’s a cardboard cutout of a character at best.

A Nina/Julian fling could HOT in the hands of the right writing team (unfortunately that team is not Jean and Shelly).

I think the person watching Jason and Sam is either Raymond Berlin, father of Rachel Berlin and master of the off-camera Ponzi scheme or green card cravin’ French-Canadian Claudette, ex-wife of Nathan. Whoever it is, I think they have a thermos full of strong coffee and a case of No-Doze within reach because they’ll need it if they’re watching that pair…

Ces
Ces

I guess GH is chickening out on Kristina’s storyline since they just introduced a new male character.
I cannot handle another screeching moment from Nina. Make it stop GH; she is NOT enjoyable to watch!
The last few episodes of the show have been pretty uneventful, I must say. Looks like Carlos will be let off the hook but hopefully Sonny will kill him off. Does anyone really need Sabrina back on the show?
There are so many damn characters on this show, I don’t even know who is coming or coming anymore! Seriously in need of some trimming.
Doesn’t even seem like anyone has a story…. just some scenes here & there to keep everyone active. Who are we rooting for?

Guess I’m in the minority, but I’ve been enjoying the show lately. It’s not perfect by any means, and I agree with some of the points of several of the posters here, particularly about characters I can do without. But I’ll take what’s happening now over the cheesy cartoon that Ron Carlivati turned the show into any day of the week, with people pulling off masks like an episode of Scooby Doo, having sex in a mausoleum, characters falling off the roof of the hospital and getting barely a scratch, killing off beloved legacy characters for no reason, I could go on and on….

Kevin O.
Kevin O.

It’s abundantly clear that GH needs a new writing team. When the only things interesting to me, a longtime viewer, are Hayden and a potential Kiki/Dillon relationship, something is wrong. It’s like the writers really don’t know what to do with all of the characters and are constantly just marking time. Ugh.

Timmm

I think the writing has been good its just there are too many characters and not enough focus!

If rumors are true they are cleaning house over there! Big problem they need a base to fall back on they need a total revamp hate to see a show get cancelled but they will if they don’t tighten the stories up. I hate that the show chickened out on the of fallout of a couple storylines. Like Liz lying to Monica and Jason and Sam for months on end and what Lulu and Johnny did to Valerie. Why was only Carly made at Sonny for lying to his family for weeks on end about being able to walk.

Soaphound
Soaphound

And speaking of “not knowing who’s watching”, how stupid is Alexis using home printers, et al, in dealing with the Carlos case? She gives new meaning to unethical. When that cute guy who came forward as the eyewitness ends up floating in the harbor, she can share the blame for it with Jordan. No police protection on a case of this magnitude? Jordan is starting to make Dante look like Sherlock Holmes! And is it just me or was she smirking all during that poor kid’s interview? I half expected her to say, “Don’t you know I have a nail appointment to keep?” Port Charles’ finest strikes again. I’m rooting for Carlos only because Mr. Parise is a wonderful actor that I’d like to see stick around and Julian (sexy or not) makes my skin crawl.

Jane
Jane

We need Liz back and Jason & Sam are boring, Jason was perverted today about their barn sex. Not liking that at all. Liz needs to get together with Griffin and then Jason will accuse her of neglecting Jake but it’s funny how he spending time with Sam during his own kids crisis as Franco nicely pointed out .

Soaphound
Soaphound

Jane, I get the feeling Billy was trying to inject some life or fun into the otherwise ponderous dialogue given to these two. We’ve seen that naughty, sexy humor when he played Billy Abbot. He’s only been able to display it sporadically as Jason. I hope the writers can add that sense of fun into nu-Jason and quickly. Otherwise, they’re only using part of one of their greatest assets’ charms and talents. At least they’re letting his hair grow back. Can’t stand that “new” look Michael and Julian are sporting.

Well done, k/kay!!!! Congratulations! An MBA….what an accomplishment! And a political science degree to top it off….that particular course of study must have been a truly wild ride given the massive dissention we are witnessing on “college campi” these days, although I’m sure you were more than up to the task! Needless to say, it’s a subject with which all Americans should have to be wholly acquainted before they are allowed to vote! (As a political junkie, I consider it a matter of continuing education, not to mention, a civic responsibility…..I would love to be able to discuss so much with you!) At any rate, I’ve never felt insulted by you—nor the vast majority of people here—so forget that notion! You’ve always been an absolute delight, and I send likewise best wishes to you! Oh, and yes, I’m still here….just been very busy and bored silly by GH as of late, so I’m basically keeping up with recaps and only the occasional peek at the few characters I really enjoy……which require little comment at this time. Still hoping things in Port Charles turn around for the better and soon! Later!

Shay
Shay

Here, here, k/kay!!! Perhaps you should add a degree in psychology to your already impressive list of credentials….you’ve well-pegged the situation we’re currently facing, although I do think that there’s finally been a political wake-up call amongst quite a good portion of the population….and it’s about time! Perhaps your admirable “fearlessness” is spreading…hey, it’s now or never! All I can add is that it should be a very interesting run-up to November! As for your new course of study, muy bien and buena suerte! The study of languages is so very interesting and it’s always fun to expand one’s vocabulary and mind in a new direction. I like to watch “International Mysteries” primarily in Italian and French ( with English subtitles) to build upon my basic high school/college course understanding, but the sky’s the limit with all the programming “en espana” that’s around. My local PBS has an entire channel devoted to it along with those said captions, which really can enhance your learning experience. As for your sister’s unfortunate condition, I am so sorry to hear of it….I’ve never personally known anyone who has suffered from such cruel diseases as dementia/Alzheimer’s—yet they obviously are absolutely horrible for not just the person themselves, but their family members, as well. Hence you would clearly be a passionate—and compassionate—advocate for this cause……which apparently needs a lot more awareness and education given the wholly appalling project which Will Farrell seemed to find an amusing prospect. I was so gratified to see none other than Patti Davis herself set him straight on that notion….despite her past indiscretions, she finally did her parents proud with that right-on rebuke of the so-called comedian. At any rate, it’s wonderful to have you back here with a bit more regularity now….I always enjoy reading your comments, k/kay, even when I don’t have the time to respond. Take care, and hasta luego!

General Hospital

GH’s Roger Howarth Chats On Shifting From Franco To Drew & The Stunning Story Twist

In one of the most intriguing plots of 2019, General Hospital’s Franco Baldwin was morphed into Navy SEAL Andrew Cain following a harrowing mind-mapping procedure. In all went down thanks to Shiloh (Coby Ryan McLaughlin) and Dr, Cabot (Time Winters), taking the life and memories of Drew (Billy Miller) from his flash drive and transferring them into Franco’s brain, wiping out his past and his present.  That followed the tearjerker moment, when Franco sacrificed himself to free his kidnapped stepson, Cameron (William Lipton) from the twisted procedure; that could have left the teenager with Drew’s memories or even in a vegetative state.

The recipient of this storyline – and who would be taking on another persona in his storied daytime drama career – is none other than Roger Howarth.  The Daytime Emmy- winning actor is no stranger to changing fictional identities on GH.  Howarth, played OLTL’s Todd Manning over in Port Charles, later switching to Franco (previously played by James Franco) following the legal dispute between ABC and Prospect Park.

Last week, viewers got their first glimpse of Howarth taking on the traits of Drew circa 2012, and in short order, it has caused emotional upheaval for Franco’s wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), Drew himself, Jason (Steve Burton), and Kim (Tamara Braun)… and that’s just for starters.

Michael Fairman TV chatted with Roger as he started his journey transforming his work from playing Franco to Drew and the challenges it presents, plus the ripple effect the change will have on the canvas for many of the characters.  In addition for One Life to Live fans, Roger chats about his appreciation for his time on that iconic series in a candid, self-effacing, and special conversation.  Here’s what Howarth shared:

When you were told that they were going to put Drew’s memories into Franco, what was your initial reaction to learning that news?  Did you think it was a great twist?

ROGER:  Yeah, I think it’s a great idea.  I really do.  Good story needs a lot of things, and this checks a lot of the boxes.  It brings people together; it provides obstacles.  There are a lot of places this could lead to.  I just think it’s really smart and interesting.  I look forward to it a lot, and I can already tell by what I have shot thus far that it’s going to be fun.

If this story is written well, what has happened to Franco will be life-altering and crucial to so many people’s lives in Port Charles.

ROGER:  What I like about it, and this isn’t lip service, is that it’s a great story because it affects a lot of people.  Those are the good stories.  Elizabeth has got to deal with this, the boys have to deal with this, Scotty’s (Kin Shriner) got to deal with it, Jason is confused by this information, and now this person in interacting with Drew, and Kim, and Shiloh.  All of the sudden, the canvas is interacting completely differently.  So, I think the writers are having fun with this as well.

Photo: ABC

Then, there is also the character of Kim played by Tamara Braun, who Drew shares a past with.  It will be interesting to see how that relationship plays out, we already witnessed Franco’s Drew instantly smitten and attracted to her.

ROGER:  Yes, the person in this body is running under a certain set of assumptions that no one else shares.  So, yes, it’s confusing to everybody, I am sure, including Kim.

Do you see Franco eventually flipping back and forth, and having personality traits of both he and Drew?

ROGER:  No.  One hundred percent, no, and that provides a real obstacle with a couple like Franco and Elizabeth.  They are always looking for obstacles to prove to the audience that these two people really do care about one another, and that’s the purpose of a story like this.  I’m guessing and hoping that it will provide the character of Elizabeth with a particular objective because it would be nice to see Becky be able to play all of those beats.

Right, and to have to fight for something…

ROGER:  Yes, it’s very tragic.  This is a character that is accustomed to tragedy, and to see Becky play the role of Elizabeth dusting herself off, trying to get what she wants is going to be really cool.

The tragic twist had Franco saving Cameron from winding up with Drew’s memories and being the vessel for Shiloh to use.  What did you think about how Franco sacrificed himself in order to protect Elizabeth’s son?  It was quite heroic.

ROGER:  I think the other beautiful part of this is that this was motivated by love.  I don’t see it as heroic.  I think as an actor, you’re always looking for the heart of the story, and the writers made it really simple.  He does this because he loves this kid.  Yeah, they’ve had their ups and downs, and they are struggling to figure out how they can get along, and they have a lot of things that they feel about one another, but push actually did come to shove, and I think that the character of Cameron is going to be deeply affected by that.

This now puts Franco deep within Shiloh’s storyline and past with Drew, because Shiloh desperately wants a key piece of information locked in Drew’s memories.  So, in theory, this kind of ranks among one of the better stories you’ve probably ever gotten to tell in your daytime career.  Everyone is hoping that it lives up to its expectations in the execution of it on-air.

ROGER:  It is certainly a high concept story.  It’s asking a lot of the audience.  So far, we’re all in.  It’s a good cast.  I work with really good actors, so I’m not worried.  It is asking the audience to suspend disbelief for sure.  The good stories do.  I think Erika Slezak (Viki) on One Life to Live, getting to play Dissociative Identity Disorder as Niki and Viki that was a large ask.  She never blinked.  She did everything that was asked.  I’m trying to follow her example.

Exactly, and she played more characters.  She had more alters after that.

ROGER:  (Laughs)  Yeah!  She’s better at this than I am.  I’m having trouble with the one. (Laughs)

What do you think about how Scott and Franco’s relationship will be affected, now that he is in essence “Drew”?

ROGER:  There’s no part of that relationship that hasn’t changed because there is no Franco.  Franco is not around … Franco has left the building.

He is a completely new person for all intent and purposes.

ROGER:  For sure.  This soldier doesn’t appreciate being called by somebody else’s name.  He is not compassionate to the people who mistake him for this somewhat tortured art therapist that he no longer is.

Photo: ABC

What is also interesting is that this should put you right into conflict and scenes with Steve Burton, because now you are essentially playing Jason’s twin.

ROGER:  Yes.  For me, as an actor, to get a chance to work with Steve, and to play a like-minded person, is intimidating frankly, but it’s exciting.

Also, the audience knows how Franco and Jason are such enemies, and now, he is really in his mind his twin.

ROGER:  Yeah, Franco sees in many shades of gray and other colors, and from what I can tell, Franco as Drew sees the world much simpler.  He thinks more clearly, he finishes his sentences, he thinks before he speaks, he knows what he is going to say.  His point of view does not waiver.  He is determined.

Courtesy/ABC

That’s got to be so exciting for you to get to play after all of Franco’s psychological baggage and issues.

ROGER:  I’ve got to say, it’s been a bit of a challenge for me to play someone with a different set of speech patterns and who stands differently.  Because Drew thinks and feels differently about everything; his body is the same, but his body is behaving differently, and it speaks differently, and he thinks at a different tempo.  They’ve been very patient on set giving me chances to do it badly, so far. (Laughs)  It’s not uncommon for me to get halfway through a scene and to have to start over.   I am essentially figuring it out as we go along.   I am very appreciative of the fact that they have been giving me a few extra takes to try and figure out how this guy stands.  He relates to people with a different set of space and time.  It’s cool.  It’s a cool set of puzzles.  It’s been really fun.  I’m a lucky guy.

When I first learned of the story twist, I was like, “Oh! Roger will be great in this.”

ROGER:  I don’t know, man.  I could be stinking it up pretty badly. (Laughs)  I think there’s a trap as an actor who has been asked to play twins, and the trap is that this guy is only acting the way that he acts.  The trap is frankly to act too much because the audience is being told that he is a different person.  If I go too far to try to demonstrate that he is a different person, then it slips into parody or overacting.  Over the years, I have definitely been guilty of overacting, so, I’m a little frightened of it. (Laughs)  I don’t like the way it feels.  I know how it feels to go too far.  I have been getting notes like, “You could pull it back a little bit.”  (Laughs)  It’s pretty funny.

Courtesy/ABC

In the past, I have heard you say you’d rather go to work and feel unsettled about what you are asked to play.  Does that still hold true?

ROGER:  For sure!  I’d rather go to work and leave my job knowing that it was terrible and that I get to come back the next day and make it a little better.  The best thing about daytime is how much it will stretch you and pull you and ask as much of it as you are willing to put in.

Now speaking of Franco, what did you think about the wedding reception on the yacht with Elizabeth?  Did you think that was a nice payoff for Friz fans?

ROGER:  Yes, for sure.  I thought it was a really sweet culmination to a sweet story about these two people finding one another.  I’m glad they incorporated a large part of the cast.  It was a really good idea.

Photo: ABC

What did you think of how all of Elizabeth’s boys (Cameron, Aiden and Jake) performed a song for Franco and their mom at the reception, and how Franco relates to all of them?

ROGER:  I think it was a really important story point, and it was nice, and it was easy to play.  They’re really good kids, and they’re also terrific people.

Franco really stepped up as a stepdad to Aiden, who had been bullied at school.  I loved the cooking scene, where Franco was baking with Aiden.  What do you think about their relationship?  I love that Franco is being very understanding.

ROGER:  I think he’s trying to be understanding.  I don’t think he’s really great at it.   I think he’s a human being just trying to figure out how to make the best use of his time here, just like the rest of us.

Photo” ABC

General Hospital needed a big jolt with an umbrella story like this that turns the canvas a bit upside down.  How does it feel to be at the epicenter of it?

ROGER:   I really don’t think I’m the center of the story.  I’m not even kidding.  The story is that this piece of information is worn on the shoulders of Franco, but the people who are most effected by that piece of information are Kim and Elizabeth.

It will be interesting to see what the reaction is like from the GH audience.  You’re not on social media.  Will you check out what they are saying … or the feedback?

ROGER:  I’m not on social media.  But, I believe there is a guy whose job it is to track that initial criticism/support.  I think it is kind of cool that we will get real-time reviews, you know what I mean?  I actually thought about that because with the character of Franco, it took us a while to figure out who the guy was.  There was a lot of blonde hair and some missed cues, and we weren’t sure which relationship would be featured, whether it would be Franco and Ava (Maura West), or whether he would wind up in Carly’s (Laura Wright) arena again.  It took a while to figure out the best way to put that guy in the canvas, and I imagine that it will happen again.  I didn’t dye my hair for this, but I did cut it. (Laughs)

How was working with Billy Miller in this storyline twist?  Were you there on his last day on set?

ROGER:  Yes, I worked with Billy not on his last day, but on his last show.  He was remarkable with dignity and with class, and I wish him all the best.  He did a great job.  He is a good actor.  I’m sure he will find somewhere to go be an actor.

Throughout your soap career, has there been a story that you initially pooh-poohed, but when you did it, you thought, “Oh, this is great!”

ROGER:   There was a story when Carly and Franco were together, and they wrote a story where Franco gave Carly a gift that wound up being a camera…

Photo: ABC

The evil-eye necklace!

ROGER:  Yes, this small seeing rye.  I just thought, every time Franco would come in and say something like, “Oh, you’re wearing the necklace.  It’s so beautiful,” while we were doing it, I was like, “Wow.  The audience is really going to hate this.” (Laughs)  However, my real-time Twitter is the subway, and while it was airing, I got on the train and sat next to this really amazing fan, who just told me how much she loved that story, and I was honestly surprised and pleased.  I am often wrong, and it doesn’t surprise me now when I am wrong  … because I was really wrong then.

You mentioned Franco with Ava which was a potential pairing. I think you and Maura West have always had great chemistry together on screen.

ROGER:  Yes, she’s a pretty great actor.  She’s great with everybody.

She is.  You knew Maura’s work first when she was at As the World Turns, while you were there, also?

ROGER:  I didn’t know her well at As the World Turns, but I knew who she was.  She’s a hard worker, and Jack (Michael Park) and Carly always had a lot to do.  She was pretty focused when she was there, but I spoke to her.  I didn’t feel like I got to know her until I got to work with her on GH.

Last month on July 15th would have been the 51st anniversary of One Life to Live. I saw a lot of people commenting and remembering the show on social media that day. I put together four photos on a post I made about that show featuring some of the remarkable actors who were a part of it.  From there, I received hundreds of comments of how people were just missing the series, the characters, and actors they loved in it, including you.  When you look at the list of people from yourself to Judith Light, to Robin Strasser, Bob Woods, and of course Erika Slezak – it’s such an unbelievably talented group who spent time in Llanview.  Do you ever think about what an incredible experience that was, and how the fans still miss that show so much?

ROGER:  All the time.  I mean, I’m a lucky guy.  I think it really was a special building to work in, and the people who we are talking about: Erika (Viki), Bob (Bo), Robin (Dorian), and Phil Carey (Asa), and Clint Richie (Clint), and John Loprieno (Cord), the people who made it possible for me to work there set an environment and a tone that made it a really special place.  It was a really good cast, like you said, and there was a lot of opportunity for them to write a really cool story.  I wasn’t a part of the AIDS quilt storyline, but to realize that they told a story like that and incorporated that into our show was wonderful.

Photo: JPI

Such an amazing story and One Life was telling socially relevant and important issues of our time, always.

ROGER:  I can’t say for certain, but I do believe that the original concept of the Todd, Marty (Susan Haskell), and Powell (Sean Moynihan) storyline was kind of supposed to be initially an effort to bring awareness to a horrible, violent crime.  That was a long time before the #MeToo movement.  I think it was a show where the writers had a social conscious as well and really brought awareness to a lot of different things.  That’s a great legacy and something that show should be very proud of.

Once the character of  Todd Manning took off on One Life, and how they found ways to redeem him, and how it spoke to how much the network, the show, and the audience responded to your performances, did you ever feel you had a bit of a safety net as an actor, or were you like, “I’m going to be fired tomorrow?”

ROGER:  This is truth: I am so grateful to have a job, and I don’t take anything for granted.  I don’t think anybody is safe in this business.  I just don’t.  I just don’t think anybody gets to say that they’ve arrived.  I just did a roundtable, and I shared this with people who have a lot more clout and opportunity than I do – that actors are by nature, the good ones, are aware that every day that you get to go to work is a privilege, and don’t waste it.

Photo: JPI

In soaps, for the most part, when someone is stepping into someone else’s role as a recast, or actor who played one role is changing to another, there seems to be this reactionary period of adjustment, and then, there is acceptance from the audience over time … unless you really stink it up  … as you say. (Laughs)

ROGER:  Here’s the thing, and this is why I think this is such a great idea, it’s not about me playing this part, it’s about how Elizabeth, who has been on this show for twenty-something years gets to react to it, and giving her the ball.  It’s flashy that Franco is Drew, but it is really and Elizabeth/Kim story.  I may be the one overacting and stinking it up, but it’s theirs. Do you know what I mean?  It’s not my story.

Photo/ABC

What do you want to say to the fans about this new “role” you are taking on at General Hospital?

ROGER:  I want to say that I really do appreciate the fans.  Here is the thing, they’re down for everything.  I hope they’re down for this.  It’s a big ask, but I really hope that they like it.

So, what do you think of Roger as Andrew Cain thus far and how the storyline is beginning to take shape?  Are you excited to see how Franco becoming Drew (through the mind-mapping procedure) shakes up the canvas? Do you hope Drew returns to be Franco sooner than later? Share your thoughts and theories via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Franco Looks In The Mirror … And Believing He Is Drew Kisses Kim

This week on General Hospital, viewers have seen that when Franco (Roger Howarth) awoke from his mind-mapping implantation  (thanks to Shiloh and Dr Cabot) he woke up saying that he is “Drew Cain”.  Thus, as far we know, Franco now carries the life and memories of Drew from 2012 and back, and as of now, has no trace of Franco’s memories.

When Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) and Drew (Billy Miller) try to make Franco understand in his confusion what transpired,  Liz brings a mirror to Franco to see his face, which makes this all the more terrifying for him.  Liz insists to him that she is wife, but he tells her that he is sorry but he does not recognize her.  Franco insists he is going to leave town and Drew asks him to please stay put, as Liz promises that they can reverse what happened to him.  But can Liz really promise that?

Later, Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) fills Sam (Kelly Monaco) and Jason (Steve Burton) in on what happened and how Franco now was implanted with Drew’s memories, which leaves them stunned.  That means Franco, who is one of the people Jason loathes most in the world – now believes he is Jason’t twin brother.

Meanwhile, as Kim (Tamara Braun) and Julian (William deVry) prepare to leave Port Charles for Manhattan and start live anew, (so Kim can not be haunted by her life in Port Charles from the recent death of her son, Oscar) things are about to make a shocking turn … for her.

Back at GH, Liz is upset when Franco decides he must get out of his hospital room.  Liz is scared he will just skip town knowing he feels he has no ties there.  Drew reassures her that because he is a version of him, the pull will be way too strong for him to exit Port Charles.

Kim is now at the hospital getting ready to turn in her resignation letter and runs into Franco.  He recognizes her and calls her “Kim!” You can tell he is quite smitten with her.  Kim is not sure why Franco is acting that way.  She announces she is leaving Port Charles to which he says he is going to come with her. She sees he has a hospital ID bracelet on, so she thinks something has happened.  Just then, Franco tells her about the first time Drew Cain and her met up! This shocks Kim  … and the next thing you know … he moves in for a major kiss and lip-lock as Drew and Liz look on.

Constance Towers Returns To GH As Helena Cassadine … But Just How Does She Appear?

Now, any General Hospital fan knows that if there is skullduggery and evil going down, Helena Cassadine (whether dead or alive) is usually somehow involved when it comes to the lives of certain people in Port Charles.

And … some major storyline news from TV Line reveals that on next Monday’s August 19th episode of the ABC soap opera, Constance Towers reprises her role as the evil one herself … Helena!

Apparently, look for Helena to appear in a flashback with none other than Shiloh (Coby Ryan McLaughlin) and about Drew Cain’s time in Afghanistan.  That scene might hold a key to just what Shiloh wants now that he has implanted Drew’s memories into Franco (Roget Howath), thanks to Dr. Cabot’s work.  But could what is revealed also relate to the story that will see Billy Miller (Drew) exit the canvas later this month? Stay tuned.

Viewers last saw Helena alive in story until November of 2016, but then she was part of Jake’s hallucinations that were a part of the chimera storyline that climaxed at the Nurses’ Ball back in May of 2017.

So what do you think Helena’s presence in a flashback will reveal? And, who is ultimately having that flashback? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.
