Genie Francis Returning To General Hospital!

Hot on the heels of her appearance on Sunday night’s 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Telecast, soap opera icon Genie Francis is returning to her original soap home as the beloved Laura Spencer on ABC’s General Hospital!

The announcement was first made Wednesday by GH’s executive producer Frank Valentini on his Twitter account when he stated: “Hey #GH fans: I have AWESOME news…@GenieFrancis is coming back to @GeneralHospital !!!”

According to a show rep and TV Line, Genie will return to GH in a few weeks! Valentini then issued this statement:  “Genie is a part of our GH family and the door has always been open for her to return when the timing and story are right. Lucky for us, the stars have aligned and we are thrilled to welcome Genie back home.”

Will Laura figure into the next phase of Luke’s (Anthony Geary) road to recovery and redemption after his over year long self-battle with Fluke?  In a precursor,  Anthony Geary and Genie were reunited on stage on Sunday night and presented the final award of the evening for Outstanding Drama Series at the Daytime Emmys!  When Laura was last seen on GH, it was back in 2013 as the character left for France after divorcing Scott Baldwin (Kin Shriner).

So GH and soap fans, thrilled to know Genie is finally on her way back to General Hospital? Comment below!

If Tony leaves I really hope they let her usher him out and keep her. She is GH as much as Tony. I hope she will be there a while. I love Genie!!!

Leo
Leo

Ditto. I actually quit watching the show about three months ago because there was too much Anthony Geary.

Bringing Laura back WILL DEFINITELY bring this viewer back!

Timmm
Timmm

Too much Tony! I hope that doesnt mean you were enjoying Nathan instead!

CeeCee

Lol, Leo and Timmm.
There is no human alive, male or female whose eyes do not enjoy feasting on Nathan. Grrrrowl !!!!!!

Yes, if Tony is leaving the show, I hope they will reunite them, leave (for a short period) and then have Tony die off screen and she can come back for good! 🙂

Tony is Not Leaving! He changed his mind after back surgery. will this rumor finally day.

Will this rumor finally die, you mean?
Okay, but Luke first.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Best news ever. I just hope she gets a story worthy of her talents. Laura has always been one of the most interesting and complex characters on GH. There is great potential for a powerful story.

Plus, Laura is the reason GH is what it is–the most iconic soap of them all. She should always be front and center. She is the heart of the show. And Genie Francis is amazing.

nancy dillingham
nancy dillingham

Louisa, you said it best! GH is crying out for some positive storylines–and Genie as its heart can give it in spades–IF the writers will rise to the occasion and write mature, uplifting dialogue between her and TG. She was Luke’s redemption once before; she can be again. Let the chemistry reignite, and let’s lift up this sodden soap.

CeeCee
CeeCee

Laura could possibly be his redemption, Nancy. But let’s just leave it at that. She could be his therapist, not his lover…please, ye gods, no love scenes with Luke…oh, my…barf.

Andy G.
Andy G.

Agree wholeheartedly!! Even when she’s not “on the canvas,” Laura is the emotional epicenter of Port Charles.

Harry

Louisa, Nancy and Andy…OH MY!
You all say it so well, so I have nothing to add but thank you.

When Genie Francis was on Y&R she was FANTASTIC. Seriously, her subtle, gentle and nuanced performance was captivating! BUT, they did not write for her and she exited.

SAME for Maura West and Michelle Stafford both formally of Y&R and subsequently hired at GH.

Now, I realize Genie is the original of GH, but PLEASE GH, write for her and let her talents shine! She will bring you fans, viewership and accolades you will not see otherwise. Genie is brilliant.

CeeCee
CeeCee

The best news ever would be if Geary is killed off and Laura not shed a tear. And remain within the gold.
Yeah, I know, terrible thing to say. But, I’ve had enough of Luke, in a short span of time, to last me eons and eons.

CeeCee
CeeCee

PS. I mean Luke killed off. God bless Tony….he has been ill. I would never wish harm upon anyone….just the character….sorry.

Took the words right out of my mouth. After decades of watching GH, it’s time to retire Luke forever.

Absolutely! Couldn’t be happier that she’s returning, and I hope the show will do right by her this time.

100% agree. GH must do right by Genie. She is magic.

I can see Genie bringing in curious viewers..
that is good..
bad is;
Luke and Laura being in any type romance/sex thing..
Tony looks like her father, it would be creepy..
(the age difference is way more visible now than in the 80’s..)

Perhaps she will be back with Scotty and her and Lucy can have catfights lol ..

I can not imagine what they can do with Laura that would be interesting..
still looking forward to the return ..

CeeCee
CeeCee

She will be mistress of Wyndemere Mansion…as its matriarch. Perhaps, she can tame the darkness within Nik that is slowly , but surely rearing its ugly head.
There are a million and one storylines that could be developed for Laura. …can’t wait.

Harry
Harry

Well, Su00, as you frequently say about soap characters, why pair her up with anyone? Let her one great romance be with herself.

CeeCee
CeeCee

PS…. I agree with you, su. I just do not seen Luke and Laura together this time around.
I forgot to mention ….is Emme/Lulu pregnant? I thought I detected a little bump. She’s so small of stature…maybe she had a big lunch?…LOL.
That would be a good reason for Laura to extend her stay in PC, yes?

Shay
Shay

It’s funny that you should make mention of this subject, CeeCee. A few weeks back, I had a similar observation about Sappy….it was moderated out of existence, but I questioned whether an “instant” and “contrived” foreshadowed fling with Mikey was designed to provide yet another sap to father a little “Sapster,” should a pregnancy storyline of convenience be required. (Needless to say, I certainly hope not! The thought of a Quartermaine heir being brought into the world via this unsuitable miss makes me want to hurl!) P.S. Speaking of previous posts, I did reply to a number of yours and they didn’t make it online….hope you received them in your inbox! One was about your sweet little Rosalba and her proud milestone and the other a less pleasant subject…I’m sure you can hazard a guess! LOL….

CeeCee
CeeCee

@Shay.
Hi, there, girl.
Alas, I did not receive any of your posts. Coincidentally, I have sent you a few also, that did not make it.
You do have a point, in that, Sabrina/Theresa may be with child and this storyline with Michael was contrived for said reason.
As far as Emme, formerly known as Marcey, or Marcy,…..she is more or less my size…I am a bit taller and somewhat more endowed (unfortunately for me) , so a little tummy growth stands out. Perhaps it was my imagination and saw something that wasn’t there? We shall see.

Rosalba is gorgeous! ….walking on her own on two steady, chubby legs…thank-you.
And, yes !!!!! I can guess…in fact, I am sure your thoughts were reciprocated by mine.

Harry
Harry

Shay, a less pleasant subject? Have you been talking about ME again?
Seriously, the idea of Sappy having a mini me toddling around the Q mansion is a vexing thought.
Yesterday, Sappy was getting all giddy and excited about the Nurse’s Ball. I think she’s going to perform a Disney on Ice number and she will be singing, “Let it Go!”

Shay
Shay

@Harry…..I would NEVER, EVER term you as such! You have been nothing but a pure delight since I first encountered you here at MFSoaps! (And that’s not simply due to our shared antipathy for Sappy, aka “Sparkle Pony!” LOL.) However, you are so right when you observe that the notion of this puke-provoking progeny is one neither of us would wish to see reaching actual fruition ala Chez Quartermaine. As for “Disney on Ice, 2015 Edition,” I would sincerely hope for the Sapster to be “Let Go” once and for all!!!!

Us old geezers are sooooo giggly about her return…lol…seriuosly, id rather see Luke with Tracy but Laura can still be part of his life without any romantic connection…thats if she isnt an imposter sent by the Cassidines to kill off Luke…lol

Hope it’s not a day or three like the warm actress Dee Wallace Stone. What another missed opportunity for TPTB to develop a story between Luke and his long-lost sister. Hope they don’t do a great injustice to Genie this time around like they did before. Hope Genie will stick up for herself and be given the dignity she deserves. I’m waiting–with a bit of hope—still.

Jimh(leave it to beaver)
Jimh(leave it to beaver)

It could be temp…the storyline is Laura returns to PC to romantically reconnect with Luke but she really is the evil Flaura…a fake Laura sent by Helene to kill Luke once and for all…thats what the upcoming murder mystery is planned for the show…just kidding…lol…its good to see her back…just hope she returns with a good storyline of her own!!!

Harry
Harry

Nancy, I don’t mean to be disrespectful but there is no comparison between Dee Wallace Stone’s Patricia and Genie Frances’s Laura.
Laura was a front burner character before she laid eyes on Luke. As much as I like Dee Wallace, let’s face it, Patricia was part of damage control.

Fanny
Fanny

Great analogy, DAMAGE CONTROL.
I simply called it back-peddling.

shrona

Ah, Jimh, when I need a smile I come to this site and look for your comments…I would love to see Genie get a storyline for herself and not just as some prop for Luke or Scott. I don’t want to see her get back together with Luke because Tracy is perfect for him and, as I’ve said before, Jane Elliot is a much better acting/sparring partner for Tony than Genie ever was…(said by the woman who cut college classes to watch special L&L episodes) 🙂

Timmm
Timmm

Shes just coming back to get her hairbrush. She left it at Shadybrook!

Rose

Glad to hear Genie’s back. Hope she stays a while, and has more of a storyline than Luke. Especially since he probably will be taking time off for his yearly summer vacation.

Scott (ATWT Fan)
Scott (ATWT Fan)

I hope that Laura’s return is well orchestrated, and not some silly ploy to reunite the gross Luke and Laura. Their pairing is wrong on so many levels, and I need a strong Laura who is focused on her children and becoming a stronger woman than some weak shell of herself.

CeeCee
CeeCee

Right on, Scott. Laura needs no one…she can stand on her own two feet . I am really excited about her return. I will be given the opportunity to get to know the real Laura. The only way I can do that is for her to be independent free of any bonds; invisible as they may be.
Luke and Tracy are perfect together.
Laura is an angel..,.not for, as you so well describe… ‘Gross’
Perhaps, when she is ready to start a new relationship, I propose someone of a classier and sophisticated nature…not someone with so
much baggage. Sure, she and Luke may have had a colorful relationship and have experienced a meaningful life together…let’s move on . I don’t care if the next man in her life is eighty…just do not let it be yucky Luke.

AJQ
AJQ

“The door has always been open for her to return when the timing and story are right. Lucky for us, the stars have aligned and we are thrilled to welcome Genie back home.”

Take notice of the language. It’s not the door has always been open for her, it’s open when the story and timing are right. So let’s put to rest all the comments we’ve seen about Genie not wanting to be on the show or all the unsubstantiated gossip about family issues etc.

They brought Genie back for the 50th, to use her like other vets, to bring back fans but had no interest in a real story for her or to give her a contract. This is how they treated a GH icon; as soap icon.

But things aren’t going so well two years later are they? The newbies and so called “heavyweights” from other shows aren’t really cutting are they? Ratings are down, and any time they show some improvement or life, it is short lived. Now they’re hoping the Nurses Ball will attract some people, but then what?

So now they bring back Genie, who should have never left two years ago. An actress and a character who should have her rightful place front and center on a show called General Hospital. I hope she’s getting everything she wants, the show needs her, not the other way around. But of course at the end of the day, it will be the same writing team, Genie can only act with what they give her.

nancy dillingham
nancy dillingham

Amen and Amen!

Harry
Harry

AJQ! I noticed the same oxymoronic language! “The door is ALWAYS open” but only WHEN the timing and story are right? HUH?
Gotta love that doublespeak.
And no, she should not have left two years ago. If Laura walking off to Paris in the middle of a storyline is not an example of a the personification of an incomplete sentence, I don’t know what is.

Timmm
Timmm

Its as dumb as Robin disappearing again!

CeeCee
CeeCee

I am a little confused by the analogy/analysis myself. Harry, you are the professor, so perhaps I err.
I don’t know about Rodd, but I don’t understand how “The door is always open” is an oxymoron. What am I missing?
I thought that an oxymoron ‘happens’ in a sentence when two contradictory words or concepts are used subsequent of each other….such as “icy hot” or “poor little rich girl”.
I would love to hear your professional explanation/expertise on the subject.

And, I too, hope that Genie will not appear for a short stint and then be a spec on the horizon once again.

nancy dillingham
nancy dillingham

Hey there, Harry! I wasn’t comparing Genie Francis and Dee Wallace Stone–just saying TPTB missed another opportunity to strengthen the Spencer family ties.
Genie is the bomb–and always an incomparable, luminous, passionate presence on screen. And, yes, she was there BEFORE TG and L and L. You are right on, Harry, as usual–I really like your humor.

Rodd
Rodd

I respectfully disagree with your analysis.

Harry

How so, Rodd?

Thank you for responding, Nancy.
I was not disagreeing with you comparing the actresses, but the characters and their relation to the GH legacy.
But I think I understand what you’re saying.

Fanny

I totally agree with you about Genie, and the same can be said about Vanessa Marcel
her last appearance on the show was wasted on a poor story line. I know that FV &
RC can come up with compelling and attention worthy stories for them.

So, the has been Laura- people are supposed to put her on a pedisil and treat her as royalty and give her fanny a big smooch, aha ya…
Her story(s) are no different than anybody else’s, she gets what she gets..
It a fair playing field..
Since her absence others have given their all to GH, and are above her storys wise, now..she has to sduck it up 🙂 lol

Harry
Harry

Suoo, how is Laura a has been but Luke is not?
Genie Frances has been very gracious despite being treated like utter crappolla and is the last one to demand special treatment.
I don’t understand your point but has Laura joined your “I-Hate-Sharon” club?

aria

i agree that FV is double talking in his announcement of Genie returning, its like he’s trying to tell us the only reason she wasn’t on was because the storyline wasn’t there? what is he talking about? timing? is he for real. they sideline Genie and the character for two years, its the same excuse they’ve been using to not give Rebecca a storyline and kept saying the timing was never right, yet kept characters like sam and carly front and center and even in other storyline with other characters so we would have to be force to see them everyday. Its clear FV and RC have their fave actors/characters that they write for, they are doing the same thing that JFP and RG did, write in favor of certain actors and make the other half look like idiots just look at what they’ve done to Anna.

Well it makes sense because I cannot see how they could seriously wrap up this Fluke story, or take it the next level without bringing the character Laura into it. They said she will be back, but they didn’t say for how long, one show, two, a few weeks, a long term contract? So, not sure if this is the big news it sounds like until I know how long she will be on the show.

So sick of anything to do with L&L he looks like her granddaddy, awful Hoping they bring back Stefan and let SN do both Days and GH and let her get involved with her kids. Aria

I’m happy she’s coming back, hope FV asked her the same question he asked TG ” Genie, what would you like to do that you haven’t done yet”? And take it from there. Hope he realizes that a short visit would be pointless. There’s so many avenues the show can take and it won’t be the end of the world if Laura doesn’t reunite with Luke, the characters have proven they can stand on their own, no reason to punish one for the sake of the other. Now let the fun begin, let’s do Genie right FV/RC.

Happy about this but wish that they would give her a better storyline than what will probably be her nursing Luke, making Tracy jealous. I wanted L and L reunite for a long time, but after the Fluke story, no, no, no..

Of course, I’d also hoped that Laura was the one that the “Legion of Doom” reported to, just because it would give her some power and a cool storyline… but I can’t imagine Genie would come back for something that would turn Laura into a villain. Sadly, on her last visit, she was just a shell of her former self. I hope they’ve figured out a good long term story for her. I’d rather not see her than see her in a story that fails her again.

Weird, jimh. I thought the same thing when Brad opened the door, and I saw his shocked face. You must be sending me telepathic messages.

Shay
Shay

Exactly, CeeCee…..The joy that all the actors displayed for KT’s much-appreciated return was so genuinely warm and believable! Mr. Cooper, Liesl and Spencer seemed just as thrilled as we were to welcome this gorgeous dynamo back to town! I truly hope she can stick around for awhile, if for no other reason that Brad and she are sorely needed to make comment upon the fashion “yays and nays” of Port Charles…we can’t do all the work! However—LOL—just a few quick observations: Anna was as chic and classy as expected, fabulous color for her! Liz was utterly breathtaking….pretty in pale pink, very regal in her Audrey Hepburn-esque mode. Maxie’s dress was truly lovely….just so delicate and ethereal. And, of course, Alexis didn’t disappoint, falling out of her usual far-too-revealing attire whilst sharing herself with the world in all of her “Cooper’s Droop” glory!!!! (God help her…) Last but not least, the truly magnificent Dr. O’s style statement as “The Lady in Red” was totally befitting of her flamboyant image, really unforgettable…..what great fun! KG rocks!

CeeCee
CeeCee

@Shay.
Hi.
I replied to your comment, sweetie….alas, it did not make it. I shall re-phrase. I hope I can contain myself….but, with these allergies…hmmmmm, I don’t know….I will try by not mentioning anything negative…LOL.
I thought it was a beautifully written commentary on the ladies’s apparel…I even complimented ALL the guys….so dashing and debonair.
My favorites were Maxie’s and Lulu’s. Valerie’s top was simply splendid. However, I thought the motif should have carried throughout….same fabric and, I would have chosen a one-piece in lieu of a two-piece…..mid-drift? Nah! It is just my opinion….if one goes formal, then that attire defeats the purpose. She looked fab, nonetheless. Actually, they all looked better than some thespians on the Red Carpet….kudos.
Elizabeth looked like a princess…but, no bun….too matronly. …..beautiful, nonetheless.
Anna did not disappoint….sedate, yet sophisticated.
I liked Carly’s as well….not outlandish…she has flair.
The juxtaposition of Alexis’s arms and hands pretty much covered what I did not want to see….but, to her credit, the flash that I did see was okay…not the typical…”here THEY are….” The camera barely skimmed over her.
As corny as this may sound, Shay……I really like Nancy. I’m serious. I like the actress. I think you understand, I am not being facetious. But, Alexis, the attorney, should take a look-see at Alicia Florrick/Julianna Margulies (THE GOOD WIFE).
And, as I said above…Lucy blew me away…..I love her style.

Shay
Shay

@CeeCee…Yes, many of my (even quite innocuous) comments have been falling through the moderating cracks as of late. It has become tedious. Hence, just know that I have not been ignoring you….or the other kind folk who reply to me. I needed a few days off, so I didn’t even try to post over Sunday-Monday….now I’m back! (And I can relate to the allergies….awful, aren’t they?) Anyway, we agree on numerous fashion points. I totally concur that “Princess Elizabeth” was beautiful….I also felt the bun was too severe for her delicate features, but I surmised it was in keeping with the “Audrey” theme….not my choice, necessarily, but RB managed to pull it off. I totally adored the color, cut and fabric of Anna’s gown…..it complimented her well-honed frame and was perfect for her exquisite tango routine. I thought Val-Chops’ croptop was quite cute, too, but the skirt was too LillyPulitizer, luau-themed for me. I hate bright and gauche! I think Maxie could have carried off that tiny top much better on her petite frame, although her dress was simply angelic….really bridal in nature. Loved it! Alas, I found Lulu and Carly’s garb to be a bit akin to beauty-pageant wear…..although the vivid shades definitely flattered their blonde coloring. As for Alexis, perhaps she was not as exhibitionist in nature as usual, but it would have been refreshing to see her covered up for once….most of the other ladies managed to do so. (As for NG….not really a fan. But then, I’m not interested in most actors/actresses as “personalities” so their views and musings outside of the “business” don’t grab me. If they rivet me onscreen, I’m satisfied, and if not, then, whatever. But you are quite right about the wardrobe of “Alicia Florrick” I do not watch “The Good Wife,” but I am very aware of JM’s style, and it is drop-dead professional!) Overall, I found this year’s NB’s fashion extravaganza to be truly disappointing….to me the majority of the crowd looked like they shopped for prom dresses at Goodwill!!! Then again, it certainly paled in comparison to the Met Gala’s sartorial nightmares….what the? That used to be one of the most exclusive, elegant, sophisticated events of the social season, and now it’s been reduced to a reality tv special with each attendee fighting for the “worst-dressed” title! Lord have mercy!

Shay
Shay

Wasn’t that just too cool, jimh? I’ve so missed the “Brittster,” and her peculiar form of mother-daughter bonding with our much-treasured Mutter! Besides, Brad’s been so lonely without her….he needs an additional outlet separate from Lucas to exercise his “sarcasm gene” since Dr. Jones was so clearly not blessed with that particular gift for glibness that Mr. Cooper possesses in spades! The “Wicked Westbourne” IS the perfect partner in snark for Brad! Welcome back, Girl!

Jimh(leave it to beaver)
Jimh(leave it to beaver)

Yes, wuv Brad and Britt witty banter…lame Lucas is my sleeping pill-he often puts me to sleep…our marvelous Mutter once again stole the show…she should be on Broadway in some cabaret type musical!!!

CeeCee
CeeCee

Well, Shay? Look at the participants of that sartorial gala…..Kim Kardashian? Beyonce? Rihanna? I love Rihanna’s music, that’s about it.
I care not how much money one has…those garish ‘outfits’ bespoke of la bourgeoisie. But, these women seem to be leading the fashion world…without class. Why? ….because they are exalted into the unreachable firmament…..is it a wonder we call them stars? Ha! and double Ha!
Les nouveaux riches sont tres gauches. Je ne suis pas impressionne.
One does not see that in any of our charity balls, attended by NYC’s creme de la creme.
However….one does need sparkle and obtrusively showy pop-culture-art. Where was Sarah Ferguson?…LOL. She would have fit right in that spectacle.

Pomp and circumstance is a thing of the past. Certainly not fit for the late Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner, RITA Hayworth, Princess Diana or the Duchess of Cambridge, albeit Scarlet Johansen and Charlize Theron are reminiscent of Old Hollywood.

I agree that Carly’s dress came right of ‘Prom’ rack…but, that’s my point…..she was not hanging out. Lulu’s dress-style was gorgeous….imagine it in black. (By the by…the little bump was still there)…..LOL
I cannot risk describing Jordan’s dress ….and some others. I will be castigated.

Shay
Shay

@jimh…..Jackpot!!!!!! That’s the perfect word for “Bratt!” (aka, Brad and Britt….) I just sat in awe and amusement as the two of them opined and critiqued the denizens of Port Charles as they strolled the red carpet….it was epic. (But I was greatly disappointed that they had no snarky remarks for Sappy…..) Oh, how we must have this most unlikely but completely in sync duo back in our midst on a regular basis….they just go together, like bread and butter! As for the incredible Dr. O….WOW OH WOW!!!! KG certainly did not disappoint….by the way, were you aware that I actually previously suggested here “99 Luftballoons” as a possible song for Mutter? I had envisioned a much more elaborate production with a huge balloon drop at the end, but Liesl’s version was most satisfying….the outre’ outfit and the popping balloons were just classic Dr. O. flourishes. Touche’ and kudos to KG for once again stealing the show! Can’t wait to see her encore, encore….something heart-tugging, I’m sure! Would love to see her so something “Phantom”-related with Spencer, but anything slow and—excuse the pun—“sappy,” will do: “I Will Always Love You?” or “What I Did For Love?” Hmmm……

Jimh(leave it to beaver)
Jimh(leave it to beaver)

Yes, now that you mentioned it, i do remember you suggesting 99 Bottles of Beer(lame joke…im kidding…lol)…99 Luftballoons…i still believe on Monday we will have our little ‘Phantom Of The Soap Opera’ moment…will he pull of his mask!!! and what would you think of ‘Mappy Q’, a son for Micheal Q and Sappy Santiago???…lol

I hope they have a great story for Laura. I hope she’s free of Luke and Scotty and able to stand on her own two feet; a powerful source who stirs story. Genie looked better than ever on the Emmys. It will be thrilling to see her back in PC as Laura and find out what she’s been up to while Laura was in Paris. When the character last left PC , so many story points were left hanging in mid-air, just like this delay about the waterfront clinic ELQ is supposedly building. Hope some things are tied up/explained.

Kelly

Genie Francis did look wonderful on the Emmys. I would really love to know where she got that black dress because I think it would be perfect for my mother who is the same age as Genie.

Timmm
Timmm

I’m with you Rodd, I would like for her to come home with a new man. She can help Luke, they will always have history, she can have coffee with Scotty, that would be fun but lets give Laura her own life and move on with a new man.

su0000

well,
like myself and assuredly many others, we have never seen Laura..
Anyone who started watching GH after 1988ish have never seen Laura..
That being said- she will simply be a new character to possibly a million plus..

I saw Genie on Y&R but she didn’t do anything there of greatness lol

Anyways it is fun to see the peoples excited for her return ..

Harry
Harry

Suoo, I don’t disagree with your assertion that Genie was not great on Y&R. It was through not fault of her own, however.
That she-devil, Jill Phelps, made sure that her character was an abysmal failure.

Kelly

There is other words other than “she-devil” I would use to describe Jill Phelps but then my post would not get past the monitors.

Fanny

Completely agree with Harry & Kelly. Ursula aka JFPhelps has ALWAYS
only had eyes for Steve Burton, why do you think he followed her to Y&R?
She needed his endless followers and in return promised him anything
that he wanted.

dmr
dmr

That is really funny; I heard they did not get along. When Maura West was on Y&R as Diane (?)-I think, or Diana (?)-the character was not liked either and she ended up leaving in a short amount of time. Luke and Laura were before my time, as well. I do remember them returning with Lucky in the 90’s-when Luke had his night club (loved that club) and they were entangled with the Wards and poor Genie-was always dressed in those frumpy clothes. Well, I think she looks amazing and I hope they have a good storyline for her-her last arc was boring, I thought.

Chris F,
Chris F,

JFP was only at YR 2 weeks with Genie. MAB was the exec producer and head writer when enie was on YR

CeeCee
CeeCee

Su is pretty quick …funny and cute with her answers, right, Harry? …impertinent girl !!! LOL.
Genie’s name on Y&R was Genevieve Atkinson; Colin’s ex-wife. And, Victor’s short lived mistress.
I must disagree with you both, though. I thought she was great. She played both the rich-bitch dame and the bar wench with absolute ease ….her acting on cue, and unswerving…..if my memory serves me right.

Remember how astute she was in deceiving Victor? Imagine hoodwinking Victor !!…..has anyone ever succeeded in doing that? C’mon, she was as sneaky as can be….a true mistress of her craft…no pun intended. She was invaluable when Victor lost his memory…..as was Billy. (Miller)

CeeCee
CeeCee

You put a smile on my face this morning, Harry; after reading your comment …..”I was just trying to agree with Su about something”…..that’s rich……How about Genie/Laura killing Sharon? How do these at-the-ready retorts come to you? Do you moonlight as a stand-up comic? ….too funny….’gotta’ run….my sisters and I are going to nursery with the kids to buy plants/flowers for the flower beds….what fun! More screaming, yelling and screeching…LOL.

Justin
Justin

Su0000, you’re obviously a hater, this is your second comment against Genie’s return. Genie Francis’ Laura, is what GH should be about. We watched her grow up and we love her. Do yourself a favor, and watch some GH on youtube from that era. Honestly, Genie was part of that time period (1978) when the show was almost cancelled. She helped to save it. Show some respect.

Harry
Harry

The think is, they didn’t just have Genie’s character (I suddenly forgot her name) written off Y&R. They had the character humiliated and figuratively tarred and feathered again and again. Everyone in town, even the lowest of the low, were allowed to kick her verbally. I think even Lily and Summer were allowed to go a few rounds on this character.
In fact, they had Victor’s retired golden retriever come back just to bark at her.

Harry
Harry

Hey Suoo–there was a spoiler than Genie Frances’s character was about to murder Sharon right before she was written off Y&R?
How do you like her now?

Socha
Socha

You have to understand that not everyone is a fan of Genie Francis’ Laura. There are a lot of GH fans who did not watch her grow up and come to love her. I was born in 1988 so obviously I’m one of those fans. Yes, I have watched some GH on youtube from that era. I am APPALLED that the producers turned what Luke did to Laura into a ‘seduction” scene instead of keeping it what it really was and is. WORST of all, that the producers would have Laura marry Luke!!! NOTHING, in my opinion, can be said to justify that. I can show Genie some respect for rising to the occasion to make that horrendous story line work and for helping to save the show.

nancy dillingham
nancy dillingham

Yes, Justin, I wish everyone could watch Laura on youtube–I watch when I can and always get a lump in my throat or laugh at Luke and Laura in the same apartment building–or Laura and Luke and Robert Scorpio–it’s the sheer FUN that I miss so much–watching the sparks fly as well as hearing the sparkling dialogue–and the adlibbing–how great was that! Genie Francis has said in interviews that she laughed so much (off-camera) that her stomach hurt! The actors were having a great time and so were the loyal viewers–that’s why we long for something comparable today. Writer, hone that sense of humor and get cracking!

CeeCee
CeeCee

I love Genie Francis, and, I did not know her or Luke, as a couple. She exudes that intangible quality/aura that is hard to explain. I simply love her.
Moreover, I do concur with Harry, in that, she was shamed on Y&R. It seems that those two little inconsequential nonentities, those harridans better known as Lily and Summer took pleasure in berating her. I wish someone would kick the viragoes’s A$$.

su0000

ohhh Harry!!
wouldn’t that have been wonderful!

With all due respect, Justin….I could never understand why opining/critiquing a character , a writer, a scene even, makes a poster a hater…..I know Su can speak for herself….chill, man! It’s her opinion.

Harry

Suooo is lucky to have you in her corner, Cee Cee.
You’re right–Genie was good in that part on Y&R. She did the best she could.
I was just trying to agree with Su00 about something.

Justin
Justin

CeeCee. My point is, there are many who’ve heard this news and are very excited about it. Genie Francis, a very important character in the history of this show (like it or not) was treated badly by this show for years, and we’re hoping this could be a turn around. So please don’t tell me to chill. I think it’s fascinating that Genie Francis was the number 2 trending item on social media after it was announced, so I disagree with what Su0000 said, that “she will be a new character for milliions of us”.

I’m sick of the continually “wounded” Laura Spencer. I want to see a strong confident secure woman who does not need to man to prop her up. I also do not want to see Laura thrown back into the arms of Luke just because of past history. Luke and Laura are no longer married to each other; their time is over. Luke should stay with Tracy. The story line should reflect that.

dmr

I love Luke with Tracy, too-love their comedic banter. Luke and Laura were before my time. I did catch them in the 90’s when they returned with Lucky. I’m assuming Genie is coming back on contract…?

nancy dillingham
nancy dillingham

You haven’t seen anything until you see the comedic banter that Luke and Laura had–all through the Left-handed Boy storyline (Luke and Laura on the run) and the banter (and wonderful love and romance) between them when they lived in the apartment complex together–him upstairs, her downstairs. This was after they return from being on the run. Check it out on youtube. I do all the time. It’s so wonderful. Great writing and, most importantly, great adlibbing on TG’s and Genie’s part.

CeeCee
CeeCee

I agree. It is a wonder to watch how devoted Tracy is. I think Luke and Tracy are good for each other. Why fix something that ” ain’t” broken?
Some couples, as Luke and Laura, cannot reconnect. Leave well enough alone, I say. Laura should be allowed to find herself, and not be glued to anyone, at this time.

CeeCee
CeeCee

You go, Kelly. If Laura comes back, that is exactly how she should be ushered in….a strong woman, secure within herself; confident…….a woman who does not need a man to validate her or bolster her self-worth.

Proud to be an Aquarian.

episodes and make it a true family reunion.

Julie Marie Berman was Lulu for eight years. She may that it was time to leave GH in 2013 for other opportunities and may not be willing to come back. I actually like Emme Rylan in the role of LuLu.

su0000
su0000

LOL
From what I’ve heard,, The families were far from a love-in..
and-
Luke and Laura’s marriage was very short lived to be any type of a great family..

Today.. the Q’s still stick together..
Today.. The Continents are a true soap family.. love and a mess..
And the traditional brother against brother and families against families, is there..
(sheesh even a newbie knows that is the soaps families lol ..

IF the soaps ever had family ”camaraderie” it was short lived before the turmoil set in.. lol

GH and its’ families are great, intriguing, and are ‘soap’ families..
behind the betrayals is always the love or some darn good hate going on lol

Rebecca1
Rebecca1

Su…there was much more family dynamics back in the day. The Quartermaines were dysfunctional, hilarious, close and at ep the center of many stories. Lila and Edward, Tracy, Alan, AJ, Jason, Emily, Skye, Alice, Justice, Lois…people were always at their mansion…Brends, Sonny, Nicolas…Robert Scorpio, Sean…for good or bad things were always happening. And the bickering was priceless. Scotty had his dad Lee and Lee’s girlfriend…can’t remember her name. Elizabeth and her sister Sarah and their ” gram” …Anna, Robert, Tiffany, Duke, Holly…all intertwined and always involved in some high caper espionage. Luke, Laura, Lucky, Lulu…

Point is I still watch and love GH, but it barely resembles gets it was. Those hours were jam packed with love, fun , family, adventure…and the zaniness that still goes on today…but even more so. It was a great show…Classic, vintage soapy fun…

Timmm
Timmm

I figured this would happen. She wouldnt have agreed to be on the Emmys with Tony if she wasnt planning a return. I guess better late than never. It will take her a year just to get caught up on what has been going on. I’m sure that will be skimmed over and they will concentrate on post Luke’s April 1st show. Either way there is plenty to do for Genie if it is written the right way. After all, her, Tony and Jane all have mega talent and can blow the right words off the page and onto the screen!

nancy dillingham
nancy dillingham

Fantastic news! Laura Spencer is an integral part of GH’s history. We love her smile, sweetness, toughness and optimism. Finally, a character to root for. Pair her back with Luke and if Tony wants to exit, bring back Tristan Rogers. Laura and Robert have wonderful chemistry and it could be a great love triangle with Anna.

We love Genie Francis, always have and always will. Jane is great but there’s nothing like Luke and Laura. Just pure magic. Ron and Frank, kudos for listening to your fans finally.

On another front, let’s get those rights back to OLTL. The characters had more heart and sole. So missing Vicki, all the Buchanans, Cramers and Lords but most especially, JOLIE.

nancy dillingham
nancy dillingham

Correct on all counts re Laura and the pure magic of Luke and Laura. And, yes, we need a character to root for. Tristan was great with both Genie and Tony–no one came close to the repartee–much adlibbed–by those three. And so much fun to watch. Made one feel better not sad and down.

CeeCee

Timmm

There are a lot of good comments here. Can someone help me out here? Why is it that so many people are down on Anthony Geary? Some are just tired of him. I guarantee you IF he would have retired people would have started the “When is Tony coming Back?” campaign. People, you cannot have it both ways. He is a legend. Not because of what happened in 1981. He is a damn good actor. I would rather watch him EVERYDAY rather than have Nathan, Spinelli, Nina ,Franco, Shawn, Jordan, TJ, Kiki and Morgan jammed down my throat! I know Fluke was frustrating to some but I thought the April 1st episode was great and now we will see how they proceed with his recovery or maybe his demise? Genie will be great because it never made sense that she was not here for Luke, Lulu or Nick. Now she is. I hope they give her independence and that she helps Luke but moves on with her own agenda. Either way, Tony Geary is to daytime what Larry Hagman was to primetime. Respect that.

su0000

Timmm !
A big BRAVO to you! You said that ^^^ right on !!!

nancy dillingham
nancy dillingham

I have followed TG’s character since he played on “Bright Promise” soap–and was Spectator No. 1 (Harrison Ford was No. 2 if you can believe it) on Quinn Martin’s produced show Mod Squad, I believe. I think I’ve seen TG in all of his TV shows–even that awful 1st movie. I was always his greatest champion; however, this last story changed all that. I think TG has lost perspective on the great tender, funny, unpredictable character he first created. I know he has played Luke a long time–but stage actors come back many times to the same role or to a revival. When TG said in that interview that Luke is a “marauding angel of death” and a “serial murderer” I think he went off the rails re character of Luke. And it’s all on him because he said TPTB asked him what he had not done with the character and where he wanted to go with it, we got that horrid storyline–and a flat, evil, one-dimensional character that I could no longer recognize, and my opinion changed. I was particularly horrified that he made the Spencer family victims of their past–when it had been played previously in rich GH history as a family that overcame all obstacles with love. But I still hold out hope that he can get Luke back on track, most particularly now that Genie is back. Hopeful that their scenes will restore Luke to the person he used to be–edgy, unpredictable, funny, tender, energetic, quick-witted, etc.

su0000
su0000

Seems you take a story too seriously..
Tony is an actor, he was asked what he’d like perform, he wanted the story as an actor it was a challenge and a great legacy..
It was a story.. nothing serious..

I loved the story and Tony took it to great heights..
Tony/Luke is many things, he goes every which way..
He jumps from one personality to another, and that is what makes him one of the great ones!!!
his personality last few months will differ from his now personality..
It will all come full circle 🙂

Harry
Harry

Nancy, I concur completely and like you, I have loved Tony Geary and his creation Luke for over thirty years.
He is absolutely brilliant and there was always a sense of fun interjected into his sense of tragedy. One always had the feeling with Luke that his way of coping with his messed up childhood was to externalize those demons through adventure and mostly, through humor. Remember when Luke was funny? Most funny people (certainly most comics) suffer from depression so Luke’s funny bit always jived with me.
But this latest damage control story took all the fun out of Luke–it zapped up his spirit and I even thought his acting responded accordingly.

Aria
Aria

Appearantly people have taken things TG has said and turned them into more then what it is, example he said he wants to eventually retire and some people took it as right now and ever sense have taken to guess his exit storyline it’s so annoying but it keeps goin on, then there’s his opinion on Luke and hoe throughout the years different writers have change the core of what he thought the character was well some felt he was dissing all the years he was teamed up with genie, plus the fact that he couldn’t control specifically the previous regime hatred towards GF. My point, there’s been some stuff said that has created this assumption that TG doesn’t like working with GF, there’s been things both have said in interviews to have people assuming this . So I’m sure others will be more detailed but you know how this work, it only take one person to start so many rumors that are never true…

su0000
su0000

At the awards Tony said;
He was taking his trophy back to Amsterdam with him..

but still, that doesn’t mean he is leaving GH. just a time out perhaps..
well, time will tell..
As of now, nobody, nobody knows if he will exit or stay..
(I say- he will stay on on with GH

Dan
Dan

Amen Timmm! Tony Geary is the best actor in daytime TV history, for my money, and he has the hardware on his mantle to back it up. Hell, he probably needs an entire room to store his Emmys at this point, lol. All well deserved. The Fluke storyline ended up not being the best, but his performances were always top notch, as they always are.

He’s as good as it gets in my book, and one of those actors I would watch read the phone book, as they used to say back in the days when we still had phone books! 😉

Timmm
Timmm

And Dan, as I stated, Fluke is not over. It started to get a little stale and then April 1st happened. Now that Genie is back they have an opportunity to really lift this story to new heights! I hope it will silence Tony’s critics.

Dottie
Dottie

I’m VERY happy Genie is coming back to GH!! I honestly thought it would have been good to bring Laura in to help bring Luke back to himself! I thought it would have been good to say ” If anyone can help Luke, Laura can”!! That woulda been a good story line!!

Torquamada, you’re singing Suoo’s song, but I ask you where oh where do you see ANYONE here wanting Laura to try to be the same young woman she was in the 80’s? Honestly, that would be depressing as all hell.Simplistic thinking is one of my pet peeves and you certainly are guilty of that but thank you for reinstating the obvious.
Almost everyone here is delighted that Genie is coming back, however, almost everyone also agrees that they do not want her to go back with Luke. Instead, we’d like her to move on, evolve, stop being Luke’s appendage and be happy on her own.
I do not understand why people such as yourself need to remind us intelligent folk that we cannot go back into the past. I’d rather re read The Great Gatsby than be reminded of that fact then hear it from someone on a soap opera comment section thank you very much.

hmm i’m 34 maybe not in that 20 something demo your talking about and my fave characters are Anna, love the late Edward he was funny and love Tracy and Luke, so age has nothing to do with it buddy, kikki is boring so is sabrina, i rather see a diverse cast in age then 20 something or 30 something so your comment is actually ignorant..

Rebecca1
Rebecca1

Very well said, Aria. Torquemada…your comment was not only offensive but narrow minded and limited. First, I don’t know how old you are but Genie Francis is in her 50s. Hardly ” geriatric.” She’s the mother of Lulu and Nicolas…does the demographic of which you speak have those? Do family dramas not usually include parents and grandparents. From The WALTON’S to The O.C., DALLAS to NASHVILLE, shows have portrayed people from all walks of life, stages and ages in life. And guess what? People ALL THROUGH their lives have stories to tell…adventures to go on and love to experience.

Most stories revolve around family and friends…perhaps soaps aren’t for you…

Genie has always been one of my all-time favorites, so I’m happy anytime she returns home where she belongs. She’s a GH and soap opera icon. She looked fabulous at the Emmys, so I’m very excited to see what they have in store for her.

I think the people on here already complaining and being negative, which some people just can’t seem to help themselves with, need to calm down, and actually wait and see what stories they have planned for Laura before they start bashing the show for Genie’s return.

For su0000, guess you and I saw two different shows. Luke and Bobbie and Ruby–with lLaura, Lucky, and Lulu–and Lesley and Rick and Amy were a real family. Guess you missed those scenes. At one time, they even included Blackie. Did you miss all the family holiday scenes also? Yes, you are watching a different show than I. Meet you around the corner and we’ll view the same one sometime!

nancy dillingham
nancy dillingham

CeeCee, re love scenes with TG and Genie Francis: can you say “Cary Grant,” “Humphrey Bogart,” “James Cagney,” “Laurence Olivier,” “Morgan Freeman,” “Paul Newman,” “Robert Redford'” ? And I could go on: “Jimmy Stewart,” “John Wayne,” “Sidney Poitier,” et.al.

Age is a number–not a death sentence, for heaven’s sake. And when the actors are great actors anything seems possible onscreen. It’s call “magic.” Or “chemistry,” Or (hold that thought!) great writing.
Come on, you’re surely not going to hold age against an actor, are you now? You’re not against getting old, are you? Remember Maurice Chevalier’s admonition when he was asked that question. You know what he said: “It’s great when you consider the alternative.” Magic, magic; that’s whey we go to the movies (or watch great actors.

CeeCee
CeeCee

Oh, my God. Here we go again about age and word-twising. I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT AGE….ONCE AND FOR ALL. I am talking about Luke’s evil being, putting his equally evil hands on Laura. As someone said…I think Timmm, Fluke is not over. Do we really want to see Luke revert to Fluke and be with Laura.? Perhaps, my comments is not well-written? ..not make any sense? I will try to polish my English and post something less confusing.
I am not familiar with the ‘old’ Luke…I only know the present Luke. I can’t stand him. I will say it again, for the umpteen time, Mr. Geary’s acting is magnificent…he deserved the Emmy. But, to compare him with Clark Gable and company? That is quite a stretch…by light years…in my estimation, not within that category. Those actors will never die or disappear into oblivion/obscurity. Why must I like this actor/character? I do not.
By the by, Nancy, you forgot Alan Ladd, Gregory Peck and Gary Cooper…three of my faves…watched all their movies.
I do not like Robert Redford or John Wayne. I can’t help who I favor or disfavor…it’s a personal taste.
Try to understand what I write and reply without putting your own spin on it. I beg you to not imply something that is not there. I do not need a lesson down memory lane about an actor/character I dislike with a passion, or care about him. You have your opinion, now respect mine…I said nothing about his age. It seems to me that you are the one (and some others) who is fixated on age, not I. Please !!!!’ And, for the love of God, stop putting words in my mouth. Who are you?

Finally! This is excellent news! She’s been so desperately missed during the Fluke story, I’m glad they’re bringing her back now for the aftermath. They should also try to get Jonathan Jackson back for a short-term return, because he is also a big part of Luke’s life and has been missing from this story, arguably the biggest for the character of Luke and Tony Geary himself. Regardless, I’m thrilled Laura will be back!

Genie Francis career concerning General Hospital she came on in the late seventies as a teenager stayed on the show until 1982. Came back in 1983 to usher Geary off the show. Came back in 1993 stayed until 2002. Came back for short visits 2006, 2008 & 2013. Also had roles on AMC/Loving, Days and Y&R. This will more then likely be a short visit also my question is why now? I respect her for her devotion to a show which has not always shown her great respect.

When Luke and Laura came back in ’93, they had some good material-with Luke’s nightclub, Frank Smith, Lucky/Elizabeth, etc. Unfortunately, wardrobe dressed poor Genie in the frumpiest duds-lol!
Her last stint was unmemorable. I love Genie’s scenes wtih Scotty. I love Scotty’s scenes with Luke and how Luke refers to him as an “ambulance chaser.”
I’ve watched old YouTube videos of Luke and Laura-and I can see the chemistry, not being alive in the ’70’s-I was curious. But, now-I think that ship has sailed; although, I understand the writers and the fans wanting to respect the show’s history. I say, “go for it!” I hope that the writing is better this time around.
Sonny and Brenda of the ’90’s are my version of Luke and Laura of the 70’s and early 80’s.

GH’s Michael Easton Talks On Finn’s Hayden-Less Story, Finola Hughes & Favorite Soap Roles

It was a pretty wonky summer for General Hospital’s Dr. Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton), especially concerning the women in his life.  After proposing to Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) she exits to go deal with her twin sister, Alex, thus facilitating Hughes’ summer break from the series.

Meanwhile, another great love of Finn’s life, Hayden (Rebecca Budig) re-emerges on the canvas during Liz (Rebecca Herbst) and Franco’s (Roger Howarth) wedding reception, and is now clearly involved in some story with Jasper Jacks (Ingo Rademacher).  But what about the unresolved feelings and story with Hayden and Finn? After all, she left him and Port Charles and had his child (who is apparently alive) but is not letting her ex know that little fact.

Meanwhile as a doctor, Finn has had to deal with numerous medical infectious disease crisis’, with the latest being what happened to Sasha (Sofia Matteson) at the hands of the evil Cassandra Pierce (Jessica Tuck), who Finn would love to put behind bars for all of her nefarious drug-related crimes and for what she previously perpetrated on him.

Michael Fairman TV recently caught up with one of our favorite gents in daytime, Michael Easton, to get his thoughts on the on-screen developments in Port Charles, what he hopes is ahead this fall, a look back at some of his favorite soap roles (from One Life’s John McBain to Port Charles’ Caleb Morley), why One Life to Live was such a gem of a soap and a special time for him and his enduring soap career, and much more.  So, here’s what Michael shared in our irreverent entertaining, and candid chat.

Photo: ABC

Hayden has been back.  But you and Rebecca Budig have not thus far shared many scenes together.  Do you think we will eventually circle back to their story?

MICHAEL:  First of all, it is amazing having Rebecca back.  I’d like to say that I had forgotten how beautiful and talented she is, but I didn’t.  She stays with you, and her performances resonate.  So, coming back to work with her is like falling back into it.  For selfish reasons, I am somewhat disappointed that I thought when Hayden came back; she would completely turn Finn’s life upside down.  So, to be honest with you, I don’t know much more than what you are seeing is going on.

I don’t understand why the show is keeping that apart.  That’s what people wanted to see when Hayden came back, because many fans loved them together.

MICHAEL:  I’ve taken a hit anytime I’ve run into fans because I think (any fans that follow that couple), when they left, are a little disappointed in what they are seeing in that the girl who left is not the girl who has come back.  I think that has been the difficult thing for Finn.  It’s almost like she has reverted back to a character she was a few years prior to that.  In terms of having his life upturned, it hasn’t been upturned because she has been rather cold to him.  So, it probably isn’t the way I would have told the story, but maybe they have some great stuff up their sleeve.  I think the stuff that we have had together has shown promise.  Hopefully there will be more, because I enjoy working with her so much.

So, there’s a baby.  Does Finn ever think the baby Hayden said died, could be alive?

MICHAEL:  I don’t think he does.  I think he (just from Finn’s nature) would believe that she would never to that to him.  I imagine his thought would be, “What did I ever do to you?  You would do this to me,” because he was clearly in love with her, and she broke his heart.  I don’t think he ever sees that coming.  I know it’s hard because the audience all knows that, and it’s hard to play the person who is not in the loop when everybody else knows the truth, but you have to play that.  You have to play that you don’t watch the show.  I think Finn has to come from that place that she would never do that, and I think that will probably take it to a place (if that is the case) that will just make the fall that much grander, but again it is incredible having Rebecca back.

Photo: ABV

Has Rebecca said anything to you like, “What’s going on?  I’m barely talking to you on the show?” (Laughs)

MICHAEL:  Yes.  I don’t want to speak for her, but I think she probably thought it was going to be more the character that left who was coming back.  I think we’ve all been a little surprised, but maybe the writers have some great surprises up their sleeves, and this will play out.  It’s just different than I thought it would play out.

Finola Hughes had gone off on her summer vacation for awhile which put a pause in what’s next for the Anna and Finn romance, as well.

MICHAEL:  Well, you work with me long enough, and then you need some time off, right?  It’s like PTSD, right?  You need a three-month treatment plan to make it back.  So, I don’t blame her for taking some time off. (Laughs)

Finn proposed to Anna with this impromptu-at-her feet-moment at the Nurses’ Ball.  Did you like the proposal?

MICHAEL:  The only thing that I would have done differently is that I originally thought she said no, just because I love playing uncomfortable, embarrassing moments.  I would have had a lot of fun with that because being embarrassed in front of groups of people is something that I would like to play.  I do that quite often in my own life. (Laughs)  I didn’t watch it back, but in the moment, it felt really nice.  She’s lovely.  Who wouldn’t propose to her?  So, there wasn’t a great deal of difficulty in doing that.

Photo: ABC

Do you sense the on-screen magic between Finn and Anna?

MICHAEL:  I hope we both bring each other out of our comfort zones a little bit.   I think Finola embraces that, and I embrace that.  I think we both sort of pull each other a little bit.  When the writers write it that way, especially early on, there was a lot of great dialogue and banter, it was like a very adult-type of movie for a while, and I really enjoy that.  It is like Sullivan’s Travels or something like that.  That’s a really dated reference.  Who else do you know that is going to pull out a reference to Preston Sturges movies?  (Laughs) How about Moonlighting?  Even that might be dated now, but it’s closer.  (Laughs)  I think that’s it.  She’ll go with it.  Sometimes just in the flow of it, stuff comes out, and nothing goes by Finola.  There is no ad-lib or gesture that you can make where she won’t go with you on it.  She’s such a pro, and she is so good at that.

You’re both smart actors, in a way.

MICHAEL:  She’s smart.  She’s really smart.   She’s extra smart, and I’m a little bit under, (laughs) and she balances us out.

Do you think Finn will finally help apprehend Cassandra?  How is it when you get to work with Jessica Tuck?

MICHAEL:  Yeah.  I would imagine.  I love Jessica.  I think she is fantastic, and I always like when the “bad guy” doesn’t know they’re the bad guy.  I know when I played Caleb on Port Charles; one of the things I liked about him was that he never thought he was the bad guy.  I think that is always the right way to play a bad guy, and Jessica certainly doesn’t play it that way.  She plays it like she is just really devious.  She is lovely. I sort of look at it like a team, and anytime you lose good players, your team is not as good.  So, anytime someone says something about someone coming back who is a really good actor, it’s great when they come back.

Photo: JPI

How does Finn feel now about his brother, Chase (Josh Swickard)?  He just can’t seem to get himself to show his affection towards his younger brother.

MICHAEL:  He does love him, and that’s right.  That’s the conflict, but it’s hard to be mad at Josh because he is the sweetest kid.  He looks at you with those big brown eyes, and you go, “Why am I being such a jerk to this guy?  He’s just too nice, but it’s good.  I think we’ve slowly developed a rapport, and it’s just one of those things that I think every so often, daytime gets right where you can almost tell something in real time.  It wasn’t rushed.  It’s taken a year, and they are sort of coming around to one another, but there are still a lot of secrets.  That’s coming up.

Photo: ABC

Where would you rate Finn in the scope of your characters?  I mean, for me, McBain will always be #1.

MICHAEL:  Is McBain 1?  (Laughs)  You and Steve Burton (Jason, GH).  I’ve never sat and ranked them. Obviously, I played McBain the longest, and it was probably the character who was the most like me I did ride-alongs with cops in New York City for like a month.  So, I was able to ground him in some reality for myself, and I was able to stick to that.  We had a great adviser on the show for over a year who was a former New York City detective, gold shield guy.  Someone once asked why the police department was so good at One Life, and that was it.  They really embraced it.  We didn’t have people sneaking out of the jail-cell with a bobby pin picking the lock. (Laughs)

It was a bit grittier on One Life.

MICHAEL:  I enjoyed that.  McBain not saying “I love you” for 10 years, being on daytime and being able to do that – now that is quite the accomplishment!

Photo: JPI

I remember when McBain FINALLY told Natalie (Melissa Archer) “I love you.” I lost it, but then again, I am sucker for soapy goodness like that. It was a big moment.

MICHAEL:  It was.  Then, he had to kind of retract it and said, “I was drugged.”

Yeah right, he had that “What did I do?” moment.

MICHAEL:  “What did I do?”  That’s right.  So, that was a challenge, and that was really interesting.  Port Charles’ Caleb was probably the most fun to play because that was just an incredible amount of freedom.  There was no grounding it in anything.  It was the biggest sandbox I’d ever played in.  If you wanted to walk over to the couch, you walked over to the couch.  You did whatever you wanted to, and obviously, getting to work with the lovely Kelly Monaco (Ex-Livvie, Port Charles, now Sam, GH) every day… it was just nice.  Caleb only had one intention.  He was in love with this girl, and he just wanted to be with her, and anytime you get one specific need as an actor, it makes it so easy. You’ll stop at nothing to be with this girl, and that’s so fun to play.

Photo: ABC

Right, and Kelly Monaco and you have amazing chemistry when you have been paired romantically together in story.

MICHAEL:  Yeah, I think those things exist in a special place, and they probably belong in that special place.  Although, I thought it was an interesting dynamic for a period of time, it would have been interesting to see where that would have gone on GH with McBain, and Jason, and Sam, because there was something there that they could have built on very slowly.  I don’t know what would have happened, but I think that dynamic was the only dynamic that could have worked for a period of time.   I don’t think Fin would work, but that one dynamic would have been interesting when you have the cop, the outlaw, and the girl who comes between them.

One Life to Live recently would have celebrated its 51st anniversary if it was still on the air.  Back in July, I posted these photos of major characters through the years.  I received so many “likes” and so many comments on social media such as, “I miss it so much. Bring it back!”  What can you say about those enduring One Life fans and being part of that one-of-a-kind show?

MICHAEL:  They’re the most beautiful fans.  All of the daytime fans are beautiful, but I think it was a really nice connection with the One Life to Live fans, and we got to know so many of them working in New York on the streets, you came out of the studio, and people were right there.  So, you really got to know them.  You got to engage with people.  I love that show, and I miss it.  Otherwise, I still stay in touch with a lot of them.  I think that speaks to it.  I have lifelong friends who I met on that show, which never happens.  Usually, you walk out of a show on your last day, and you’ll never see anybody again.  You’ll all say, “Yeah, let’s exchange numbers.”  I walk out of there and I go, “Thank you, and I’ll never see you again.”  I don’t even lie to people.  Like, I know I’ll never see you again, and I never have except for that show, and I am still in touch with so many of those people.  So, I think that spoke to how close we were.

Photo: JPI

Were you and Roger Howarth (Franco/Drew) always close on One Life, or are you closer now because you do all of the personal appearance events you do together?

MICHAEL:  Well, Roger and I have known each other; it must be going on… 25-30 years now.  So, it was pre-One Life.  I think at some point we both had long hair, and both had done daytime, so we were pretty interchangeable.  I think one time they called him about a part I did, and one time, they called me about a part when he left.  I actually know Roger because I did a series called 413 Hope St., and Jesse Martin was the lead in it.  It was a Damon Wayans series for Fox.  So, I had known of Roger, but I really got to know him at a New Year’s Eve party in like 1995/96.  Obviously, I’ve become really close to him now because we never did appearances or that sort of thing, but I think we have both sort of gotten over ourselves a little bit now. (Laughs)

Because you weren’t very visible before.  That goes for both of you!

MICHAEL:  No, and that’s by default.  I don’t think we ever discussed it.

Photo: ABC

It wasn’t a conscious decision?

MICHAEL:  No, I just thought (especially when I came back to daytime to do Caleb) it was just more interesting if people didn’t know a lot about me because the character was that.  So, it took me a while to ease into it, and also, I just had to get over myself.  I had a fear of engaging with large groups of people for a while.  In a strange way, Roger and I have kind of gravitated to each other.  I think we are both similar types.  Between the two of us, we make up one real man, you know?  Each of us is like half a man. (Laughs)

Together you can conquer.

MICHAEL:  We are a good crutch for each other!  He picks up my half, I pick up his.  That’s the solution.

So what do you think GH viewers can look forward to coming up with Finn?

MICHAEL:  I’m assuming at some point he is going to get his world turned upside down when he finds out about Hayden and the baby, and how he is going to react to that will probably be interesting.  I hope that’s going to happen.

Photo: ABC

If he became an addict again, how would you feel about that?

MICHAEL:  I think him struggling and getting over that would be interesting.  I would hope that wouldn’t be his reaction, but I guess that always hangs over your head.  Certainly, him falling apart would be interesting.  I think your faith in the universe would be crushed in that moment.  I don’t know how he would react.  I’m just really curious to see how that would shake out and to play that.  I think it would be a challenge.  I think you’re always looking for some way to turn everything … and I invite that.  I always think that sometimes in daytime we play the gimmick, but you should always play to the heart of the story.  What’s going to make you feel something?  If you feel something as the character, as the actor, I think the audience will feel something with you.  I think it is maybe one of the things that we have gotten away from a little bit is that emotional attachment.  When I watch shows that really move me, it’s still that emotional attachment between two people, and at the end of the day it should still be a love story … no matter what it is.   I think that is the heart of what we should be doing.  I think every poem should be a love poem of some sort.  I know they have to weave the other stuff, the science fiction, and the memories, and the missing babies, and the twins, but at the heart of it, it should really be about two people finding themselves in love.

Are you working on graphic novels, movies?

MICHAEL:  I’m always doing something, Michael.  It keeps me balanced, and it keeps me from losing my mind.

Photo: JPI

Will you be producing and directing any new short films?

MICHAEL: Trevor St. John (Ex-Todd/Victor Lord Jr. OLTL) and I are always talking about doing a short film.  Every time we drink too much beer, next thing you know, we are going to be doing a movie.  We have many beers, and then we shoot a film.  Then, we call our friends like Kamar de los Reyes (Ex-Antonio, OLTL), and Sherri Saum (Ex-Keri, OLTL), and Dan Gauthier (Ex-Kevin OLTL), and we go, “Now you guys, drink many beers, and you will join us on this film.”

See, now I get how movies are made!

So, are you hoping that GH tells more of the story between Finn and Hayden?  Are you hoping that Anna and Finn make it to their “I do’s? What would you like to see happen to Finn? And finally, of all Michael’s soap roles which has been your favorite? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.
