GH Executive Nathan Varni Talks Jason Reveal & If There Are Plans To Cast A New Patrick Drake!

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

ABC Current Series Executive Nathan Varni (who looks after General Hospital) took time out of his schedule to talk to Party Wills Online about the current state of the ABC daytime drama series, and to relate more about his background.

A few interesting excerpts in the piece included: when Varni was asked about his thoughts on the length of time it took to reveal that Jake Doe is actually Jason Morgan (Billy Miller), and if the series will recast the role of Dr. Patrick Drake – after Jason Thompson (Patrick) finishes up his run with the series.

On the Jason reveal, Nathan noted: “Once Shelly (Altman) & Jean (Passanante) joined the show as our new head writers, their ability to hone in on what was working and what wasn’t working was and is important for the future of this story.  I did love Ron’s idea that since we were recasting the role, the idea of the accident and giving Jason a new face and taking away his memories was intriguing and helped us get back into telling a Jason story.  I also think it was very interesting to see Liz fall in love with ‘Jake’ not Jason, they had a connection (not knowing their past).  I think all of that was interesting to see unfold.  Unfortunately where we misfired was dragging the story out way too long and we as a collective team are all responsible for letting it drag on too long.  But our current writers have a clear vision and journey for the story which I think has really jumped the story in the past month and even re-energized the actors on set. Shelly and Jean’s take on the upcoming story is one that I find interesting and will really push the actors to bring their “A” game to their roles. “

On the status of the role of Dr. Patrick Drake, Nathan expressed: “There are no plans to have a new Patrick Drake but as I’m sure our audiences know we need to beef up our GH doctor staff but that is long term and we are still in the planning stages for that as we discuss 2016 episodes. When Jean & Shelly started they said they would love to tell more hospital stories and I completely agree with their desire to do that and hoping we can build many hospital stories in 2016 and beyond.”

So GH fans, are you glad to hear that the seris will not be recasting a new Patrick Drake? What did you think about Nathan’s comments on the show taking responsibility for dragging the Jason reveal out too long?  Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

As I’ve posted before I hate that Jason Thompson’s leaving. With that said, I could care less. If he and Robin wAlk off into the sunset together. I like Patrick and Emma and hoped for a recast. Disappointed…

Absolutely need to recast. Emma and Patrick, Emma and Anna, many stories to come out of that. Need to keep some of the long time families intact.

Completely agree. If they lose and/or re-create any more characters it won’t even be the same show, anymore. People watch daytime dramas because they become acquainted with a almost family oriented with the various characters and stories, every day. What they are doing to GH is a shame. It’s lasted 52 yrs and under this team has spiraled down to where even longtime viewers are having a hard time sticking with it. SOmeone just doesn’t get it – that’s for sure.

I AGREE I DON’T WANT PATRICK AND ROBIN TOGETHER. THEY NO LONGER WORK! Please recast the role of Patrick! We want to see Emma. and she should be there for Anna or Anna has no reason to be in Port Chuck.

This whole soap and the story lines has suffered. I’ve watched for 42 years and the current status is HORRID. the Jason storyline was a killer to viewers. Too many new people and stories at once. They have taken away what we love..GH,,With that.IS THERE ANYWAY TO make Jake stay Jake……..Rehire Steve Burton as Jason to bring excitement back to the show?

i agree with you.. I was VERY disappointed with the reveal of Jason.. one year of waiting for that?????? It was so anti clamatic… I am glad that they ended this absurd making a film storyline today.. .. Belle..mmmm I mean maxie and watchamacallic working together at the magazine will be good.. I hope…. definitely fast forwarding through must of this show these days……..

I agree, Timmm. Definitely no recast.
On a different note, but same subject….After Patrick’s call to Robin, do you think she knew Jason was alive? It seems that way. It also seems to me that the mystery person ‘affiliated’ with Hayden, could very well be Robin. Hmmmmm. Just sayin’, ….later, Timmm. Hugs.

No recast. He’s played the part 10 years. He can return if he wants. Also yes Robin knew Jason was alive since she was the one who was his doctor! I guess you’ve forgotten that she was with him at the clinic and in the car with him on the way to Port Charles before the accident. They kept not showing his face while she was talking to him.

You CANNOT re-cast the role of Patrick Drake. Impossible to do, been on the show too long, and you’d be recasting the whole family basically (can’t do two characters at a time). Can’t recast Robin and Patrick.
The did the RIGHT thing in waiting with Jason’s reveal but did take too long. He’s a totally different person than Steve Burton and that’s a good thing as he make Jason turn into Jake. He owns the role now and he’s fantastic.

Dani I Iove Jason Thompson and hold out hope he’ll return to GH at some point just as many have who have left. However, without that crystal ball I don’t want to lose the Patrick, Emma characters until-if he does…. On the other hand on today’s show it looks like Emma.was kidnapped…probably Patrick and Scorpio go in search of her. At least THAT makes sense if that’s the reason Patrick is off the canvas for a while. Prior to today’s kidnapping it made no sense for Patrick to uproot his daughter, leave Anna, his fantastic position at the hospital…much story… Read more »

I don’t think he should be recast nor Robin leave the door open for them to come and go like Robin has been. And for the Jason story took way to long was ready to quit watching after 42 years, but now if they don’t bring back his memories of his life with his wife Sam and soon and make a story of them falling in love again I’m done. I prefer to see Patrick, Robin, and Emma leave together so I am happy just knowing there won’t be a recast of Patrick. As for the Jason story, I d agree it went for a long time but there had to be layers mixed in so that the story would work. I had a head injury in real life and I know you can’t just pick up from it in a day or a week or a month and remember everything. For petes sakes the writers are trying to make this as real as it kinda gets for a soap opera. I agree with not rushing things it will all work out in the end. I think we need some new doctors in PC but the Patrick Drake Train, went cho cho along time ago. Just tired of this wimpy DR.

I said just about the same thing, James R. Both fans and cast needed to get to know Billy. So, it did work out, albeit our patience was at the end of its rope. And, I appreciate how Monica, whose name should be Sunshine, is giving Jason all the rope he needs. She assures him of her love; tells him in her quiet and quaint way a relationship is in order, yet at his own pace. I love that.
And, James R? It would be a dream come true if Michael Easton would return.

HI, Lisa.
If Easton returned, I would appreciate his presence in any form. There’s no other actor, in my eyes, who can make a character as authentic as he can. This has been done before where a character resurfaces in the ‘guise’ of another, on the same soap . Chris Kosacheck(sp) (DOOL) returned as Romsn Brady…..etc.

It’s nice, if not rare, for a TV executive to admit to, and apologize for, “dragging the story out way too long.” And I applaud Nathan Varni for that. If the head writers indeed plan to address “what was working and what wasn’t working” and the long-term goal is in reality to “build many hospital stories in 2016 and beyond,” maybe, just maybe, they will finally eliminate the character of Sonny and the endless mob storylines, given that they are, at best, polarizing the fan base and, at worst, continuing to ruin and degrade the formerly great “General Hospital,” allowing… Read more »

I agree…too much gloom and doom in the real world full of violence…gotta have some since its a hospital but not as often or as graphic…watched some old Gh eps. on youtube with Valerie Starret as Diana Taylor…i like Brooke Bundy for her work in primetime and on Days as Rebecca in the 70s and thought she made a fine Diana but still they shouldve tried to keep the talented and beautiful Valerie in the role and had Brooke as a different character!

Second, I can’t thank you enough for remembering my decades-long admiration and fandom of Valerie Starrett as Diana Taylor and for looking at some of her scenes at youtube. I don’t think Patrick drake should be recasted, and Emma should not be with anna, however I don’t want her to leave,I think since we know Robin never stays long, it would be great if stayed with Sam and Danny for stability and that leaves many open story lines and room for reoccurring roles, remember mac raised Frisco and f ed limits girls maxi and George as well as robin

Patrick and Robin should be reunited and leave PC with Emma. As much as I love little Brooklyn and her portrayal as Emma, Robin should be reunited with the daughter she loves and has been kept away from on/off for almost 4 years. I’ve always felt that Patrick has been lost without Robin and she is his greatest love. Both the Sabrina and Sam pairings didn’t work for me. It’s time for Scrubs and family to have their HEA.

I think if Patrick & Robin will be able to reappear for visits in the future, don’t recast him. Otherwise, maybe…..
I can see more hospital stories the way it used to be, but not totally.
Jason/Jake needs to soon get a heart, even if his memory hasn’t come back. His treatment of Sam is intolerable, and not even seeing Danny, and the way he treated Carly & Sonny. Has to be more empathy there, as Jason has always had.

I so agree with you that he should see Danny and go to a hotel-he is married to Sam-Liz is such a bitch it’s not funny. I hear early Dec. Liz’s lie comes out! Carly will go after her as will others. I know he is hurting talking to people he can’t remember but seeing Jake and not Danny is so wrong! I hate this story. Liz telling Monica her son is alive is a slap in the face to Monica! Stay away from Jason says Sam-and Sam should give her a black eye. I will always be behind Sam.

Well, Suzanne, not unless Emma gets kidnapped first. The Robin drama has become so stale and rusty. And, here I thought she would be coming back to collect her little family and leave town, the air ‘festooned’ with heart-cut-outs, silver streamers, doves and roses…….not looking forward to another hostage situation. So what I really think he means is he doesn’t “feel” them. He doesn’t feel the love and friendships he has flashes of memories of…even though he now believes he had them.

The Jason reveal definitely was too drawn out. I was getting so frustrated that I didn’t watch it for many episodes. On the Dr. Drake character, do not recast him. Let him and Emma go off with Robin when she appears. Robins character is old news and she doesn’t need to stay. Anna can do her police work as usual. Please let it be revealed that Carlos is not dead. This story is dragging out too.

Liz should have been ousted at the wedding and it would have been so much better and rating wise too but no another stupid months of her lies! Every time I see Liz and Jason I want to scream. Jason is so clueless it is not funny. And Liz telling Sam to stay away from Jason-you LIz can go to hell!!

I agree, Sally. That would have been some spectacle. It would have been the culmination of both a long-awaited-for revelation, and the end of Liz’s scheming. There was no climax leading to the ‘reveal’…..but, a sonic boom pointed at Liz would have topped any anticipation.
Sorry, Miss Lizzie, but you deserve whatever is coming to you….especially considering your high and might

The Jak/Jason reveal was put on hold while giving Tony/Luke a grad exit.. That story went from Fluke to Luke.. So much effort was put into Tony’s exit than the Jason reveal was put on hold.. Both– reveals, could not take place during same time one would have diminished the other.. IF Tony would have left as was planned, GH would have forward and onto the Jason reveal.. There a few involved, not just RC. How it happened.. anyone can google it.. Tony ha one foot out the door, he was done ready to go. Frank did not want to… Read more »

Gee, suOOOOO, you’re giving Tony Geary a LOT of sway over the show. And destroyed the show for this longtime viewer–and many others, if you put any stock in ratings.
“Putting way too much time on Fluke:Luke, Tony’s exit.” You’re so right about that.
Question: WHO IS MISSING TONY GEARY NOW?????????????????

I have been loving GH for years…… I take what it given…. I never minded the long storyline about Jake/Jason…. there’s so much to watch…. the new writers are moving things along and that is awesome. Honestly, I never thought about Liz’s first attraction to Jake like that…. her finding out and keeping it from him…. she is doing an awesome job with this character’s storyline. She is being so hated and stooping to all time lows. But, it’s interesting… intriguing …. thank you and keep it all up…. A truly forever fan forever

I agree, Linda. Rebecca is doing such a credible, outstanding job…it makes my head spin. But, I do not like the idea of fans ‘hating’ the character, because I really love the actress. How will TPTB bring Liz back as the good girl? Am I wrong about this character? Did she always have a ‘bad girl’ streak?

Hello, Mari,
So, Liz is not the sweet, little gem I imagined her to be?…..gorgeous woman whose smile is worth a thousand stars! I have only been watching for a little over a year, Mari, and until I witnessed her deceit, lies, cruelty and duplicity, I thought she was an angel on earth….all she needed were her wings. Let me tell you, though; Rebecca is doing a smashing, superlative job at being a bad girl. Lol.

Mari

CeeCee, yes Rebecca is a great actress, but I’ve never liked the character of Liz, she always acts like she’s all moral and perfect but this isn’t the first time she’s kept Jsaon and Sam apart, she’s spilt them up before and when they were trying to find there way back to each other , she switched the DNA results for Danny so that Jason and Sam would get divorced and Jason would be with her. She knows Sam is his true love and he always finds his way back to her

@Mari. Oh, my gosh, Mari. I do not know all these things. Liz sounds diabolical. She seems to be welcomed and liked by everyone? I get the feeling she is held in high regard? I see Robin coming back to town to reunite with Patrick and then leaving town together . That will sum up the character leaving the show. Then Sam will reunite with Jason as she still has feelings for him. Liz’s deception will come to light and she will be left without a man! I have wondered if the writers may decide in the future Jason is not Jason but a long lost brother who is impersonating him.

I really hope they recast for Patrick Drake. They’ve had so many successful recasts on GH, they can do it again.

I was wondering why they hadn’t age progressed Emma since they did for Jossalyn (unless that actress just had to leave) so maybe they just wanted to keep this Emma until they change out Dr. Drakes. Besides that, if Dr. Drake left Port Chuck, so would Emma and then Anna would have no family ties there.

As for dragging the reveal out–the BIGGEST problem with this story was taking 2 good people (Liz & Nik) and making them bad guys. General Hospital’s Nancy Lee Grahn Chats On Her Daytime Emmy-Nominated Performance and Its Significance

When the nominations were revealed for the 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, General Hospital mainstay, Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis), was recognized for her stunning work in the Alexis-centric standalone episode which honored her 25th anniversary with the ABC daytime drama series.

Grahn, is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner.  She won back in 1989 in a tie for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work as Julia Wainwright on Santa Barbara along with All My Children’s Debbi Morgan, and again received the honors in that category in 2012 for her work on General Hospital.

Now. she is vying for the gold in 2022 in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category against other formidable actresses including: B&B’s Kimberlin Brown, DAYS Stacy Haiduk, Y&R’s Melissa Ordway, and her GH castmate, Kelly Thiebaud.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Nancy to talk about her decision to enter the Emmy race this year, her powerful and moving scenes, why this nomination is significant and important to her, and her take on some very important social issues of our time.

Always candid, insightful, combined with great humor and wit, here’s what Nancy had to share below, and make sure to check out GH this week when sparks fly between Alexis and Gregory (Gregory Harrison). Will he turn out to be the new beau in Alexis’ life? Stay tuned.

Courtesy/ABC

Congratulations on the Emmy nomination.  How do you feel about being in the running again, especially with the material from your 25th anniversary episode?

NANCY:  You know, I don’t submit myself if I don’t think I have something, and I didn’t last year.  This year, I had the one show, and the first reason I submitted myself was I had the episode that was worthy of the competition. These judges have to sit, and watch this stuff, and very often, it’s hard to watch soap opera scenes.  It really is, unless you’re in it.  It’s a different kind of material that most primetime people aren’t used to watching.  So, it’s tricky business.  I don’t want to put them through anything too awful. I don’t want to torture them and I’ve judged before. It can be a bit tedious. So, for me to submit myself, I thought, it has to be something that isn’t going to torture another human being. The second thing is, older women get marginalized the older they get, and they get diminished very often, and every time we get nominated, it means something different to me.  This time, to me, I want it to somehow be symbolic, or a shoutout to women who are still producing, who have been doing their job for a long time and are still doing it good enough, and that it’s still worthy of respect and recognition.

When we were at the GH Convention back in March, I played the scene on-stage for the fans in attendance of when Alexis goes over to the corner of Kevin’s office and heals her younger self.  You saw the reaction just from the fans.  It’s such a beautiful moment within the story.  What did you think about how the standalone episode was crafted?

NANCY:  It was a different experience for me because GH co-head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor, and script writer, Scott Sickles gave it the attention, but even more to that, they allowed me to participate in the creation of it.  They allowed the director, Phideaux Xavier, to participate.  We all sat in a room.  They said, “You know what?  Make it how you’re comfortable with it.”  There were so many people who gave it time and effort, and Phideaux gets a lot of credit because he came up with a lot of ideas.  So, the little girl in the therapy room wasn’t initially a part of it.  That was Phideaux’s idea, and they let us alter things, and they allowed me to write some words that meant something to me with the character.  Our producers, Michelle Henry and M.K Weir, who I both adore, were also a part of this.

Courtesy/ABC

That is great to hear that you were involved in the collaborative process of the creation of the episode.

NANCY:  We read through the whole script, and we worked it like you would on primetime. We went through it like, “Does this moment work?  Does that moment work?  Does this make sense?  Does that make sense?”  We never do that in soaps.  We don’t get to that.  So, it was a gift to me.  It really was. Chris and Dan, and Scott and Phideaux, and the two producers, generosity in gifting me that experience and making sure that it was to everybody’s liking, was really very special to me, and it meant a lot.

Did you come up with the key lines which summarized Alexis as a person and her journey: “I’m Alexis Davis, and I’m a fighter, and an idealist and an advocate?”

NANCY:  No. They designed it, but we were allowed to enhance and contribute creatively to it, and, we don’t normally have the time to do that.  They don’t have the time to – and you can’t allow people to do that with every episode, to be creatively participating, because it would turn into madness with everybody.

Then, when it came down to choosing the scenes from your anniversary episode to include for your Emmy submission, was that a challenging process of which moments to go with?

NANCY:  I just told a little story with it with the time that I had, and so, I edited it with a friend of mine.  I did a sort of pre-edit on it, I’m good at that, and handed the timeline to our editor, who nicely put it together. It took very little effort.

In my humble opinion, I think that episode featured one of your all-time best performances.

NANCY: Thank you. There was a nice effort from everybody, from the lighting to everybody else, and all the effort Phideaux put into it.  He worked so hard on that!  It was fun for us.  It was like the old days where you really got to work something out.

Photo: ABC

It truly harkened back to everything we knew up to that point about Alexis and her past as well, and included a montage of scenes over the years.

NANCY:  I think it was M.K. who put that together, but when you’re working at the pace we’re working now, to have to sit and put together a montage of twenty-five years, that’s not an easy feat.  Nobody has time for that anymore, but they did it, and like I said, it was really, really appreciated.  My only thought with it is that I wanted it to be relatable to other people.  I didn’t want it to just be some, you know, self-indulgent Alexis episode. I knew that by bringing in the little girl and talking about people being hurt in their childhood and how that makes somebody feel that it was probably relatable to many people, and so it became meaningful to other people and not just me.

Do you think you’ll attend the Daytime Emmys? I know the last time you won you were not present.

NANCY:  Yeah, I’m planning on it.  I mean, barring anything happening! (Laughs)

Does it feel nice to be recognized by your peers?

NANCY:  Of course, it does.  It always does, and way too often, women who are still producing well in their jobs, don’t get the respect and the acknowledgment for it.  So, that’s why I’m saying, this is no small thing, and that I want other women to know that I know that, and that I wish for them the same thing.

What was the reaction of your daughter, Kate and your fiancé, Richard, when you told them you were Emmy-nominated?

NANCY:  Richie goes, “What is this?  Your 18th nomination?” (Laughs). You know what I mean?  It was just kind of like, “Yeah, sure, why wouldn’t you be?” It wasn’t like, “Oh, my God!”  It was like they kind of expected that.  That was nice!  I’m glad they feel that way.  I’m glad they weren’t surprised.  They were like, “Sure!  Of course, you would be.  Why wouldn’t you be?”  I said, “You know, it doesn’t always work like that!”

Photo: JPI

Now comes the part of having to find a dress and all that goes with it for the red carpet.  Do you enjoy that part?

NANCY:  No, I hate that part.  That is my… oh ‘boohoo’, you know?  I mean, I have to find something to wear.  Also, the older you get, that becomes so much less important, and the more makeup, and the more hair, and the more foofy, the more ridiculous I look. I start looking like Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.  You’ve just got to keep it simple.

You were talking about women and ageism.  Do you not feel that also exists for men?

NANCY:  It exists for men, but it’s not at all on the same par as women.  I mean, men still get paid more than women, and men still are valued more than women.  I mean, there are exceptions, but if you look in any place of employment, even the soaps, you will typically find the men making more money than the women, and the older the women get, the less they get.  Life’s not fair right now.  It’s fairer than it was, but still the equality game is not won yet.

Photo: JPI

I know how much all of this means to you in terms of equality for women, and people being run out of their jobs because of their age.

NANCY:  It’s just a reality.  It’s not something that I’m hopeless about, but I have a story to tell.  I’ll tell it when the time is right.  It’s life!  It happens in every field everywhere.  When my mom was 70, she was still producing the exact same way she was producing when she was 30, and she got run out, and was replaced by a man who was 40 or something, and there was no particular reason for it.  It was just, “You’re done.  We decided you’re done,” but like I said, it happens everywhere, in every line of work, and that’s why I just wanted to give a shout-out, when you still, after 36 years, can be recognized or shown respect or acknowledgment for what your do.  It’s a very big deal that I am appreciative of and grateful for.

So, rooting for Nancy to win the Outstanding Supporting Actress prize? Happy she was nominated for her work in the the milestone episode devoted to Alexis? General Hospital

GENERAL HOSPITAL: What’s Up With Elizabeth?

Friday’s episode of General Hospital, finally moved the story of the haunting of Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) along a bit, after it has been a very slow build for the audience. As it turns out, and with the new developments, it appears that Liz has been going in and out of a catatonic state, while sleeping walking.

With a tip from Violet (Jophielle Love), Finn (Michael Easton), who is chatting with Gregory (Gregory Harrison), recalls Liz was having trouble sleeping and was that she given a sleeping aid. He thinks he may be on to something so he decides to go to Liz’s house to talk to her.

Meanwhile, Liz comes to her house and tears Finn and Violet out of the picture that Violet drew, and then gets a scissors and starts cutting pieces off of the drawing, bit by bit.

Cameron (William Lipton) comes home and see his mother.  She does not respond to him and appears in a trance-like state. He is getting more upset by the moment, and then Finn arrives on the scene.

Finn is able to get the scissors from Liz, and also get her to snap out of her trance.  Liz talks with Finn and wonders what is happening? She doesn’t even remember how she got home.  When Cameron fills Liz in on what she was doing … cutting up the drawing and all … Finn tells Liz he believes she is the one who is haunting herself.

In tears, if what Finn is claiming is true, then it is she who is responsible for slashing her dress, setting fire to Franco’s studio, and hitting Chase over the head.  In that moment, a teary-eyed Liz recognizes that something is terribly wrong, saying, “What’s happening to me?”

Finn promises Liz they will get to the bottom of this as Cameron looks on.

So, what is happening to Liz and why? Is this just a case of another sleeping pill storyline on soaps, where someone does not recall their actions or where they are going in the middle of the night a la Nighttime Hope on DAYS? Is someone controlling Liz to make her do these things?  Is something else physically wrong with Liz causing her behavior? Share your thoughts on this storyline … and where you think this is all heading via the comment section below.
