GH SHOCKER: Sean Kanan To Return! What Role Will He Play?

Leave it to Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati! The masterminds behind GH, have found a way to bring back Sean Kanan to the ABC Soap!  It’s been nearly 20 years since Kanan appeared as A.J. Quartermaine the bad boy of the Q clan! As fans recall, A.J., then Billy Warlock was killed-0ff in 2005.

So the question is, who will Kanan being playing?  Is A.J. not dead?   A new character?  TV Guide, who broke the story exclusively, also suggests he could be a replacement for departing Steve Burton in the role of Jason!  Kanan will first air on October 29! Burton exit’s October 22.  And here is the good news for Kanan! GH has put him under contract, so this is a long term character!

“This is all pretty surreal and utterly unexpected — in fact, I thought it was going to take an Act of Congress to get me back on GH!” says Kanan, referring to his wildman ways and past alcohol issues that led to his ouster from the show in 1997. “GH is one of those places I never thought I’d see again and that makes what’s happened even more exciting. My life has changed completely since those days. I’m newly married and have a baby on the way. I also have an 11-year-old daughter and four stepchildren. I’m not the guy I used to be.”

So soapers, who do you want Sean to play on GH?  A.J.?  A new character? Jason? Weigh-in!

wow this was rumored for a while on tv guide magazine. aj quartermaine would be a better fit for sean kanan. playing jason would be weird for me to watch. welcome back sean kanan. maybe alan quartermaine and emily can also come back too. stuart damon needs to come back now. also bobbie spencer jackie zeman. man i miss her as bobbie spencer.

welcome back! I would say you will be back as AJ..the place in Switzerland is holding Alan Q, Tony and Bobbie..and other favorites..let it be..Monica needs Alan..with the passing of John Ingle, Edward Q..will he be replaced or let his character die? Bring back Alan for Monica..thank you, Santa..

I want back as AJ

Welcome Back!!! All we need is Alan!!!!!! Does anyone remember Reginald????
I miss him so much! I wish they would bring him back!

I remember Reggie. The actor who played him was interested in directing. Thats why he left. If we cant have him back, i’d love to see more Alice!

So excited for him! Can’t wait to see him on screen again. Sean can play anything.

OMG! I’ve been begging for this to happen! I’m so excited!!!!!

AJ Quartermaine!!!! No Jason recast. No new character. We need more Q’s on the show. And Sean Kanan was great at portraying AJ in the 90s. I loved him in the role. Much more than Billy Warlock.
I don’t think that Sean Kanan would work as a Jason recast, which IMO isn’t needed anyway. Let “GH” close that chapter. Sean should be back as AJ. It gives the Quartermaines much needed story, Michael his real father, Carly her first husband, Monica her son by blood and Tracy a nephew. AJ is so connected. This character shouldn’t have been killed off in the first place. I hope CarTini fix it and bring him back as AJ.

actually SK is SB’s cousin by Marriage, but they always looked alike. He is too Old to play Jason so I would saw Monica needs AJ. Alan Q would be the icing.

This news should quiet down some of the naysayers that think GH is turning into OLTL.

Glad Sean Kanan is going to be used … hopefully to his full potential!

But am I the only one that thought I heard he was going back to B&B? Just happy to see him on my screen again. He is fun to watch. 🙂

sean started airing today on b&b but it will be a short run just like the last time when he was there this summer………..

Oh, thanks, Ethel!

I am two, now three days behind on my B&B episodes and starting to lag behind on GH too. 🙂

GH IS more One Life than the show I’ve watched for 25 years now. All that maddening talking to themselves and recapping their secrets out loud! Ugh. I never thought I’d say thiis, but who needs to sleep with who to get Guza back?

I’m with you Tania. He is AJ. TPTB can make it happen. Why not. By the way, can we have Miss V back, also Bobbie, Sean and Tiffinay?

They should bring back as AJ. Recasting him as Jason wouldn’t be the wisest choice. I’m sure any longtime fan who remembers him as AJ would find it difficult/awkward to watch him as Jason. Plus, casting him as Jason would prevent the use of any flashbacks from the 90’s featuring Burton as Jason and Kanan as AJ.

Also, on a more personal note, I can’t stand the character of Jason. So I’m hoping Kanan returns as AJ.

It would be weird as when GL wanted Michael Z to play the late Roger’s Arch-rival, Alan Spaulding. Zaz said he would only play Roger, so he survived falling off a cliff.

The one and only AJ!

NO ONE can replace Steve as Jason, don’t even try! AJ back, hmmm, and what does Carley and Michael have to say about that????

I AGREE 100% GH SHOULD NOT RECAST STEVE BURTON NO BODY
CAN REPLACE HIM AS JASON, NOW WAY I CANNOT SEE SEAN PLAYING
HIM AS JASON WAS NEVER CRAZY ABOUT HIM AS AJ ANYWAY

ABC BETTER THINK TWICE ABOUT RECASTING STEVE BURTONS ROLE

He’s always been aj to me. Never that short lil billy warlock. So happy sean is coming back. But wait I just saw him on b&b today…..

To me, Sean playing Jason is NOT an option!!!!

Bring him back as AJ Quartermaine. Though, I do not like Sean Kanan as an actor. But best of wishes for him back at “General Hospital”, a place where I know he’s been missed!

I’m with you. I don’t like Sean in any role in which I’ve seen him. I didn’t like him as AJ, although he was better than Billy Warlock.

IM GLAD HE WILL BE BACK MAYBE AS AJ AGAIN AJ MAYBE HE NEVER DIED HE WAS TAKEN AWAY LIKE ROBIN WAS

Since A.J. is long dead…. Jason would work for me, because he and SB have similar looks. It would take awhile to get used to, but I think I could.

Glad to see him returning regardless… 🙂

I agree! 100%%% He can play Jason , since Steve Burton Can’t anymore. But Jason Morgan can not leave GH!!! that is NOT an option!

YEP

welcome back, prefer him over billy warlock in the role of A J but lets no mess with recasting Jason please.

First of all, it’ll be good to have him back on GH. Secondly, I think it will be either as AJ or a whole new character (hopefully a Q), but it won’t be as a recast Jason. I’m sure that door will be kept wide open for Burton should he decide to return, even on a recurring basis.

Maybe it would be Dillon? LOL! (ex-Dillon almost married his daughter on B and B)!

I am happy to have Sean Kanan back to GH, as I adored him in the role of AJ. I would definitely prefer seeing him come back as AJ, only because there is only one Jason and that is Steve Burton. I truly believe that TPTB would “hopefully” see it that way as well. Whatever the case may be, I am sure they will have Sean coming back in a way that will be enjoyed by all GH lovers. Good luck Sean and welcome back!!!

so glad sean is back – i want him to be aj because he was so awesome in that role – people are saying aj is dead – well i say who stays dead on a soap? when jason leaves there will be only 2 quartermaines left standing & that is unacceptable for a core family!!

This is a very interesting development! Whoever Sean will be playing, I hope he will be a member of the Quartermaine family. Many of us fans would like to see the Q’s expanded and driving story again!

This is great news but… and I am clearly in the minority here… I am not fond of resurrection stories. And I have to wonder why we as fans want to see the smae show we had 10-15-25 years ago. Yes, I miss many characters, too, but I am too reality based for so much. People die. Those deaths affect stories and characters to come. Yes, some are boneheaded moves on the part of writers but…

I think he could be a Jason Morgan recast and I could accept it. Sean Kanan does sexy bad boy really well, and maybe Jason’ s storyline have him turning back to the Quartermaines. Referencing my comment about death, Edward’s passing and the failure of his marrage to Sam may be impetus for Jason to evolve.

And Bobbie Spencer and her son are very much alive. Bring them home! Laura Spencer, too!

I like your idea. I believe that if they reverted Jason back to his Quartermaine ways after his surgery, SB wouldn’t have left. Jason as a mobster has run its course. But SB is leaving and Kanan is coming back. I saw him on B&B yesterday and I wasn’t too keen on his acting skills. Perhaps it was the script/dialogue. It would be nice if he returned as AJ but won’t his character be similar to Todd’s?? Maybe he will be a Cassadine?? OMG he might be cast as Ric Lansing. Think about it… Ric might not like the idea of Molly having a bf. He certainly won’t be happy with Alexis being with Shawn.

I have been thinking about it, and I bet he will play AJ again. It opens so much – his son Michael, his history with Carly and everyone else.

I know there are others that do not want to raise the dead, but if the new team can makeup for some of the misdeeds that have gone on over the years, why not?! I keep hearing how the Quartermaines need to be brought back and I agree. This is a great start. 🙂

Perhaps Billy Warlock won’t be too far behind?

Core families die off sometimes. Webbers, Hardys, Baldwins? Dwindled to nigh extinction. He could be a nice place holder till Steve Burton returns (as I think he will eventually) But then what do I know I still see Nico instead of Sonny! lol

As Jason for sure

I hope be returns as AJ. AJ was just one of many characters sacrificed on the altar of Jason and Sonny during the Phelps/Guza regime. He was written as a weak willed pathetic loser so that by the time he “died” he was almost a non-entity. By restoring AJ they are heading in the direction of reassembling the Q’s. I hope Cartini is in touch with their audience enough to know that. We don’t want a recast Jason, we don’t want a twin, we dont want a mystery look alike…we want AJ.

No, no, no please do not recast AJ as the new Jason. GH really need some new male actors I’m so sick of the women on the show sharing the same man. I really want Sam to find true happiness with her new baby and please not John McBain, never liked him even when he played on OLTL.

I can’t stand Kanan, I hope they can find someone else to replace Jason. Really no one can replace him. He is definaly one of a kind. I’m just so sad to see him go. I do wish him all the luck in the world

I wouldn’t mind having the roll of Jason Morgan being portrayed by a familiar face.
I hope that “Jason” doesn’t get killed off in hopes that one day Steve can return. I think the roll (Jason) is very important to GH. It would be heartbreaking to see him go.

34 years I have been watching but jason leaving is the end. Don’t they understand One life to live was canceled for a reason. For me it is the last straw.

No one can and will EVER fill Steve Burtons shoes, however i would like the character of Jason Morgan to live on and get revenge on Duke

THAT WOULD BE A GREAT STORY LINE.

i would want kanan to play the role of jason morgan because sam needs a husband and a babby daddy because i like sam a lot so i wouldnt want her to be said

I AGREE

I HATE DUKE ALREADY. THERE NEED TO BE A SHOW DOWN , THAT ONLY JASON CAN PULL OFF. OF COURSE SONNY AND COMPANY CAN GET REVENGE, EVEN SAM BUT, I REALLY CAN GET USE TO A ACTOR PLAYING JASON JUST FOR THE REVENGE.. DON’T WANT LUKE TO GET HIM EITHER.

I really like to see Sean as Jason’s replacement.

I would much rather see Sean as AJ Quartermaine or some other character, but not a recast for Steve Burton. It’s been so long since AJ was on the show, and he was presumed dead, so why bring him back? Maybe he will return as someone after Duke or works for Duke…..just have to wait and see; but with Monica making that call saying, we have to talk, leads me to believe AJ is coming back.

please tell me it is Jason that Sean will now be portraying. At the end of the show today, he was on with Monica.

I WANT JASON BACK. IF SEAN CAN,T PLAY HIM THEN THEY NEED TO FIND A JASON LOOK ALIKE.

CAST CALL FOR A NEW JASON PLEASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSE

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

Published

on

By

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

Photo: JPI

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.
