It was a big night for ABC lone daytime soap, General Hospital, the show scored wins in the Outstanding Drama Series category, Lead Actor,  Supporting Actor and Actress, and Directing team categories at the presentation of the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards live on HLN and emanating from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California!

GH’s Anthony Geary won his record seventh Daytime Emmy as Luke Spencer when he was named the Outstanding Lead Actor in Drama Series.  The Bold and the Beautiful’s Heather Tom (Katie) set a new Emmy record also, for being the first actress to win in the Younger, Supporting and Lead category with her win as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

GH’s Nancy Lee Grahn who was unable to attend the festivities won for Outstanding Supporting Actress (her second in this category), and Jonathan Jackson picked up his fifth Daytime Emmy for his role as Lucky Spencer in the Supporting Actor category.

Days of our Lives, Chandler Massey took home his first Emmy for his role as Will Horton in the Younger Actor category as did Christel Khalil for her role as Lily Winters on The Young and the Restless.   One of the biggest surprises of the night was Days of our Lives win for Outstanding Writing Team in a Drama Series!

On-Air On-Soaps will have more Emmy coverage later today.  For now, after the jump take a look at the list of winners from last nights telecast on HLN!

Listen, congrats to all the winners, but this show totally blew! I heard more crickets than anythingelse. Was it too late to secure the rights to the shows’ themes so they could play as the show winner made their way to the stage? And what about that tribute to AMC and OLTL? Oh, that’s right, it was turned into a true Erica Kane segment where Susan Lucci gushed about herself. What was that all about? Why was Erika Slezak minimized to a few sentences and nothing mentioned about the vast contributions from the stars on these two shows? Where were… Read more »

Lucci’s narcissism is unbearable. She embarrassed herself. Who would want to watch anything with her after this?

Your right it was awful how she behaved, How many times did she say the name Ericka Kane? Very disappointed in her, but not at all surprised. I know after last nights good bye to only Ericka KAne I could care less about her, I wanted to see and hear from ERICKA SLEZAK not Ericka KAne. What a Waste. Rodd, Rebecca, And david your all right.

Here’s what we should have seen, an excellent video tribute to OLTL: http://t.co/26WbbvFt Here’s what OLTL cast tweeted about televised “tribute”: Kassie DePaiva, “Omg… That was the OLTL tribute????” Robin Strasser, “Worried that it wasn’t really a tribute to #AMC #OLTL but to Susan Lucci. Grateful once Cam and Erika came on it became a tribute to FANS:)” Hillary B. Smith, “Just watched Emmys. Did I miss the OLTL trubute? And a clip from 1999 for the OLTL directors? Confused and sad! . . . Totally lame and ungracious. The soaps are what built the daytime audience. We were reduced… Read more »

It was truly the worst thing I’ve ever seen. Not only the narcissistic speech of Susan Lucci, going on and on about ERICA KANE…..but I was thoroughly pissed by the introduction that Agnes Nixon and Ricky Paul Goldin….addressing Susan Lucci as the queen of daytime. I am a fan and all, but when you’re standing next to a 6 time Emmy winner for Outstanding Leading Actress, don’t you think that title is a little exaggerated? Agnes Nixon didn’t even mention OLTL! Excuse my language but, WTF?! And I’m sick to death of seeing Cameron Mattheson representing AMC!! His character was… Read more »

Totally agree. I have been a fan of OLTL for 25 years. It did not surprise me that the tribute would not due it justice. OLTL never got the respect it deserved the emmys.

Congrats GH, heres hoping for many more. The award show itself was not as impressive but considering everything thats been going on this past year with daytime in general, i’m glad the community was able to get together to celebrate, hope this will be a turn around for better things to come.

Very disappointed that Ericka Slezak didn’t win her 7th. Aside from that General hospital did great, I hope Abc/disney was paying attention to those emmys, next year they should win again because gh has gotten even better, It was nice that hln had the emmys however, I found it to be very, very boring, At least it wasn’t a 3 ringed circus, They only had 3 weeks to put it together so I will give them a break, I did like Oscars singing at the beginning, My biggest complaint is that awful, terrible, music they played while they were introducing… Read more »

Agree that I am willing to give a pass on the production due to the time frame they had to put it together. Glad that they even attempted. That being said, there were things that made me roll my eyes and/or be glad I watched it via DVR and has the fast forward option. I was terribly disappointed that Erika Slezak and Bob Woods did not win. Consolation is that they will have one last shot next year since OLTL still aired during the qualifying period. I wonder if they did not have access to some of the clips or… Read more »

Ovreall, I was pleased with the presentation. Although I was disappointed that Erica Slezak and Bob Woods didn’t win in their categories. On the other hand, I am happy about GH being the big winner for the night. Kind of a slap in the face to ABC for as Tony Geary aptly put it, that this show was up for possible cancellation last year in favor of a reality “boob job gone bad” show. So, take THAT ABC! Congrats to Geary and all of the GH family! Considering the awards show was done on a shoestring and with very little… Read more »

REALLY wanted Crystal Chappell to win for Carly. I think it would have been a great moment for her since things did not go well over at Days and she worked her ass off over that drug storyline… even getting physically sick to perform well… but i know the Emmys usually go for stuff like “Lucky 7” and a feat of winning all Actress categories… even if CC didn’t win, i think Debbi should have. Another victorious night for GH and another blow in the face of OLTL which is very sad given that it was OLTL’s last chance.

I wasn’t impress with the “tributes” for AMC and OLTL either. But I don’t think this surprise anyone given the lame “tributes” they gave to GL and ATWT the years before.

Forgot where I read this but because one life to live lasted longer then all my children after they were cancelled. I heard that one life to live can be in the awards next year. I hope so , I would like to find out if that is true. Seemed like it was a tribute to ericka Kane, it was lame. and the music they played, it was bad. However, I did like Oscar.

I glad that days of our lives won writing team (it was a shocker) and so glad chandler massey won younger actor and nancy lee grahn won supporting actress. I don’t know what to say. What r ratings for? One Life To Lives ratings were higher than AMC, and way above GH. One Life To Live usually gets snubbed. For what reason who knows. We THE FANS liked OLTL best, yet it was still cancelled and snubbed at the Emmys. This is a joke at this point. I like Heather Tom too. I was surprised that we didn’t see any clips. That music they kept playing got on my nerves. Did they only have one tune? I didn’t like that people were up and walking around during the show. When Eric Braeden came out, it took forever for him to speak. One of the best parts was the alligator trying to eat the Emmy. Happy Chandler, Heather, and Days won. Was surprised Christel won. That was sad and it was good that he was included, he is dead because he had no where to turn and that alone should stand out as a reminder that there are people in his case that cared so much for his critter that he is dead because of a few people who made his life a living hell in a place that was his home because they didn’t like his dog and they changed the rules to drive this poor man crazy and he had no where to go.

I do give the production company a break, being not on network, they may not have been allowed to show the clips or they could have been to expensive, but at least they showed the photos of the actors.

I am happy about all the GH wins, thought I would not have minded if AMC got the Best Daytime Drama award, and it would have been nice if Erica Slezak got her final award. But who know she might get a chance next year for the two week stint into the year!

I didn’t watch the show, but I am grateful that “Y & R” did not win any of the major awards (Best Drama Series, Best Writing Team). Perhaps this will be a wake-up call to CBS/SONY and with any luck, some behind-the-scenes housecleaning will come about sooner than later. “Y & R” is really getting to the point where I can barely watch it: the silly, plot-driven and plodding stories; one-note vapid characters created to push lame story while legacy characters are shoved into the background and the new characters are shoved at the viewer; an over-bloated cast full of… Read more »

http://www.hlntv.com/video/2012/06/23/susan-lucci-tribute-erica-kane-and-cancelled-soaps

There was NO tribute to OLTL other than the mere mention of its name, before which Lucci goes on and on about Erica Kane. OLTL deserved so much better than this. No clips, no mention of the other actors who had been on OLTL for decades. No nothing.

I feel sorry for anyone who has to be in the same room with Lucci, let alone work with her. Devious Maids is doomed.

Why was Cameron Matheson out there with Lucci and Slezak? It should’ve been the two leading ladies of the cancelled series introducing retrospective clips of our shows.

As for Slezak’s loss — I’m shocked. Heather Thom is a great actress but she didn’t have the material Slezak did. Of course, once I saw that had OLTL failed to garner Best Show or Best Writing nods, I knew it was yet another shut-out year for that great show.

Cameron Matheson is all over like “you know what”. He’s on Good Morning America, TNT and just this afternoon saw him in a 2012 movie for Lifetime with Sidney Penny. He must know someone or he’s an incredible brown noser. As for Susan Lucci, she seems to be all over the place too. Why was she chosen to do the “tribute”? All she did was talk about herself and her character. God forbid she should give up the microphone to Erica Slezak. Poor Ms. Slezak. Traveled 3000 miles to be snubbed and crowded out from the microphone. Disgraceful!

Bad as some of the show was, let’s just be glad it aired and hope that HLN will do a better job next year when they have more time to plan. I know that’s why the music was so bad and there were so few different presenters.

I was disappointed in many of the winners, but that’s the daytime Emmy’s for you. If you’re not an avid, long-time viewer of a show, of course you are disappointed if someone from that show won.

Pride Month Celebrating LGBTQ+ Soap Supercouples: Nuke, Kish, Otalia & WilSon … Which Stands the Test of Time?

June is Pride Month, the time when across the U.S and the world there are celebrations and commemorations to recognize all who identify as LGBTQ and their allies.

Daytime soap operas have had a rocky road when it comes to the representation of same-sex couples.  The soaps have been at one time leaders in portraying key social issues of our time, as well as treading lightly on other subjects, as to its concerns to ‘turn-off’ its core audiences.

When you look back at the groundbreaking first same-sex weddings, and the first gay kiss, the soaps have come far in some ways in their representations of gay characters, but there is always work to be done to serve and to shed light on the under-represented.

As we reflect back to the then and the now, which LGBTQ soap supercouple remains your favorite and had made a lasting impact? Let’s take a look at four duos who captivated many viewers.

Nuke  – Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer – As the World Turns

Van Hansis (Luke) and Jake Silbermann (Noah) were a key part of the evolution of, and representation of LGBTQ character on the soaps.  ‘Nuke’, as they were known as, became the first gay male soap couple to share an on-screen kiss back in 2007.  ATWT also became known as the first soap to depict a fully realized romantic male couple as an integral part of the show.  There was plenty of backlash along the way for the long-awaited kiss to happen, but when it did, the show moved forward to tell their love story.

Otalia – Olivia Spencer and Natalia Rivera Aitoro – Guiding Light

When Crystal Chappell (Olivia) and Jessica Leccia (Natalia) began to play the love story of Otalia, they had to show their affection by a kiss on the head, or holding hands.  It took quite some time for GL to move forward to have two women, two moms, no less, share a lip lock. The complicated love story featured Natalia being conflicted to face her true romantic feelings for Olivia, because of her value system and religions upbringing, and that made this all the more riveting and frustrating at the same time.  In the end, the rabid fan base for this duo was so great that Chappell wound up creating her own series, Venice, to honor and serve them, remaining one of the LGBTQ communities greatest allies.

Kish – Kyle Lewis and Oliver Fish – One Life to Live

In 2009, One Life to Live’s Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell) was an out lab tech in Llanview, who back in college had a relationship with Officer Oliver Fish (Scott Evans).  It imploded when Oliver denied he was gay.  For years, Oliver remained in the closet, before finally coming out to himself and Kyle.

Kish had been a big success with the media and One Life’s gay audience. LGBTQ-advocacy groups honored the couple and the story.  However, Kish was cut short when the network felt that the data showed that the storyline was not resonating with the show’s core audience.

WilSon – Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis – Days of our Lives

Days of our Lives delivered daytime’s first-ever gay male wedding in 2014, between Will (then played by Guy Wilson) and Sonny (then played by Freddie Smith).

In an interview with EW, Days of our Lives executive producer, Ken Corday shared on the union, “Will and Sonny have been together for a while and it was the natural progression of their love story. We didn’t feel like there was anything we could or couldn’t do, we treated them like any other couple on the canvas and continued to grow their romance as such.”

In addition, the coming out story of Will Horton was critically praised and noteworthy for the performances of Chandler Massey, who won three Daytime Emmys for his work in the Outstanding Younger Actor category 2012, 2013 and 2014.  Freddie Smith also won in the same category in 2015.  Will has been played over the years by Chandler Massey and Guy Wilson, while Sonny has been portrayed by Freddie Smith and Zach Tinker.

There have been several other key LGBTQ couples throughout the course of daytime history including All My Children’s Bianca (Eden Riegel) and Reese (Tamara Braun). These two characters were involved in the first same-sex lesbian wedding on daytime. Problem was … Reese kissed Zach (Thorsten Kaye) before the wedding, making this infuriating for viewers at home.

Other notable LGBTQ couples through the years have included: Bianca and Maggie on All My Children, Mariah and Tessa of The Young and the Restless played bv Camryn Grimes and Cait Fairbanks, Maya and Rick on The Bold and the Beautiful, Lucas and Brad on General Hospital and others.

Which couple do you think has had the most lasting impact on the history of LGBTQ representation on daytime soap operas? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
