GH's Carolyn Hennesy on the key to writing "The Secret Life of Damian Spinelli!

General Hospital’s and On-Air On-Soaps Podcast co-host, Carolyn Hennesy (Diane) chatted with TV Guide Canada’s Nelson Branco about the upcoming release next week (April 5th to be exact) of  the book, The Secret Life of Damian Spinelli as told to Diane Miller, but written by Hennesy herself.  The suspenseful and mysterious book will include most if not all of your favorite GH characters in gripping and enveloping short stories that also honors the show’s history.  So what was it like thinking in the mind of Damian Spinelli? Here are a few excerpts from the interview!

Hennesy on if she had to dig deep to figure out who Spinelli really was: “I did not. Spinelli is very complex and intricate, but to me, Carolyn the actress — and Carolyn the actress watching Bradford Anderson play Spinelli — Spinelli’s voice was very easy to find. The biggest compliment I have had thus far on the book was from Bradford, who said I had Spinelli’s voice down and as finely tuned as the writers do. He said, “You understand the character as I do.” Again, Spinelli is a dual personality. He is the quintessential computer genius and he’s Sam Spade, Humphrey Bogart. I’m such a film noir fan so I love that quality in him.”

Hennesy on if she thinks Spinelli is suffering from Asperger’s syndrome:  “No, I don’t believe that. I think he’s the smartest person in the room wherever he goes. He’s very much like a Robin Williams, like many of the great improv artists. Robin makes no secret of the fact that he was alone a great deal as a child so he created his own fantasy world where he had to create all the voices, create all the scenarios and play all the characters. I doubt anyone would say that Robin suffers from Asperger’s. I think Spinelli is the same way. Spinelli’s IQ is simply just off the charts. His IQ is simply too large for the rest of the world. And because he’s been alone so much we still don’t know his parentage. We just don’t. I think he’s come to Port Charles looking for his parentage. I think there have been clues along the way … this way lies your parents. I allude and indicate that in the book. He’s not a foolish man. The fact that Spinelli got Maxie simply dumbfounds him. No one is more shocked that he got the girl.”

I think Spinelli is a pretty smart geeky kid. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
However I do think TPTB enjoy writting Spinelli as a characature of who he could be. Spinelli character is being written so OTT that other characters either make fun of him or ignore him altogether. I love that Diane can honesty see who Spinelli is and likes him for who he is. Everyone should have a “Secret Life.” Spinelli and Diane have a mutual respect for one another thru writting this book. Diane and Spinelli’s relationship is quite beneficial for both of them. Diane is a mother figure to Spinelli. She can reign in his OTT actions without critisizing who he is. Spinelli gives Diane the freedom to act like a kid again. I like Diane and Spinelli’s relationship. Makes me laugh.

He describes how his bipolar disorder began to surface in childhood, how he struggled to understand the jolting mood swings he experienced, and how a doctor finally saved his life. For years Maurice was relentless in his goal to be a successful actor. But even after he “made it,” he still grappled with terrifying lows, breakdowns, and setbacks, all while trying desperately to maintain his relationship with his wife, who endured his violent, unpredictable episodes. Maurice holds nothing back as he bravely talks about what it was like to be medicated and institutionalized, and of how he learned to manage his manic episodes while on the set of GH.

Nothing General About It is also an incredible love story about an enduring marriage that demonstrates what those vows—for better, for worse, in sickness and in health—truly mean. Maurice also pays tribute to the community that has been there for him through thick and thin, and ruminates on the importance of both inherited and created family.”

GH Head Writers: Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor Reveal More Details On Michael E. Knight’s New Soap Role

When daytime favorite Michael E. Knight debuts on General Hospital on September 30th, he will not be coming to Port Charles as his former All My Children alter-ego Tad Martin; but instead will be playing a different character.

EW.com has first look photo of Knight in his new role and spoke directly to General Hospital co-head writers, Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor for the scoop on the ever-popular Knight’s return to ABC.  On GH. Michael will indeed play a new role.

According to the scribes: “There are a number of people in Port Charles who are in trouble and his character will have an impact on how their stories are solved or further complicated.”

Both Van Etten and O’Connor shared: “As we were writing his character, we found out that oh, we have even more use for him! It’s helpful to know who the actors are in this situation. We have lots of ideas on how we can expand his character and cross-pollinate his character.”

As to how long Knight will be sticking around Port Charles, that was not offered-up, but what was is that Michael’s new character will mix it up with Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) with whom Knight worked with on All My Children when James played Will Cortlandt.
