GH’s Cynthia Watros Talks On: Nina and Sonny and What’s Next, Her Co-Stars, and Her Daytime Emmy-Winning Role as GL’s Annie Dutton
One of the red-hot storylines on soaps is that of the Nina/Sonny/Carly triangle currently playing out on General Hospital which in turn has stirred up fans of the long-running ABC daytime drama.
At the epicenter of it all is Daytime Emmy-winning actress, Cynthia Watros, who plays the complex Nina Reeves and it was through her vendetta with Carly (Laura Wright), and her omission that she found Sonny (Maurice Benard) alive and well in Nixon Falls and living as an amnesiac named “Mike”, which opened the door to this unexpected alternate love story between Nina and Sonny.

Now, months later and with Sonny’s memory in tact, and back in Port Charles, viewers have seen: the implosion of Carly and Sonny’s marriage, Nina hitting the sheets with Sonny (which Carly walks in), and now the question becomes, what will be Nina’s state of play for the man she loves? Will she go after Sonny and find the happiness that seems to have alluded her in matters of the heart?
Michael Fairman chatted with Watros for an all-new virtual interview now on the Michael Fairman Channel about: all things Nina/Sonny/Carly, working with her GH co-stars, what she thinks would happen if Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) turns out to be Nina’s bio-child, and more.

In addition, we take a look back at Cynthia’s memorable run as Guiding Light’s Annie Dutton, the role that one her the Daytime Emmy back in 1998, and sharing scenes with the one and only Kim Zimmer (Reva), while playing the psychotic and villainess, Annie. Cynthia also talks on her time as Libby on ABC’s hit primetime series, Lost and much more.

Now let us know, what do you hope happens next for Nina? Do you want her and Sonny to be together? Do you hope Willow turns out to be Nina’s daughter? Do you hope Nina gets her comeuppance from Carly for what she did to her, and the Corinthos family, when Nina knew Sonny was alive? Share your thoughts in the comment section.
Great interview… team Nina all the way !
I really want Cynthia Watros to win the Daytime Emmy for Best Actress this year – I prefer her way more than Laura Wright’s shouty shrill self-righteous shtick over-acting. Hoping Kirsten Storms will submit in Supporting Actress so she can win an Emmy this year too! Cynthia for her overall work all year and Kirsten for the kidnapping/giving birth in the woods/confrontation of “Henrik” (Peter) and giving Louise to Brooklynn for Louise’s protection – yowzers!).
Nina (and Maxie) are my two favorite GH characters! She has really made Nina her own and she always has me riveted to my t.v. screen! So glad she has returned to daytime! I am Team Nina 100%! But… I don’t think Sonny is worth her time, he’s such a childish brat! (;
Cynthia IS Nina! I cannot even imagine Michelle Stafford as Nina at this point. And I was so wishing that Gina would have been Phyllis’s return from Milan on Y and R.
Maxie/Kirsten is doing some magic! So glad that GH gave her a very potent storyline, especially after her losing Nathan/Jay.
Overall, GH is doing a much better job than any other soap with driving characters and story simultaneously.
(Though I still miss The Guiding Light!!! – Happy Robert Newman is back on daytime at Y and R)
I find her so overrated and the year she won her Emmy it should have went to Eileen Davidson
Cynthia is an iconic daytime actress and Annie was a great and complex character that was played by the best. She deserved the Emmy that year and I remember her speech even if it has been 20+ years. GL was the better soap anyway and few will reach its 72 years.
Need Nina to get therapy because she needs it.
Yes she does!
Carly definitely needs it!
I really tried to like this version of Nina when she took over the role…. never cared for Psycho redhead Nina at all. In the beginning it seems like Cynthia’s version of Nina humanized the character. But that all seemed to stop when she found out Val the Bastard lied to her about Sasha being her daughter. OK… fair enough, that would upset anybody, I guess. Maybe she’ll get over that…
But no… she went from there right into blaming Carly for Psycho Nelle’s death, which was wrong on both counts. First, Nelle ain’t even dead, and second, Carly actually tried to save her. Which was rather generous of her, considering all that Nelle had done to Carly & her entire family.
Then there’s the whole Tricky Dick Nixon Falls saga…. you know, a Devil might have given a pass if Nina had felt a little pissy after that phone call she made to Carly, and decided to POSTPONE telling her about Sonny for a couple days or so. But no, she kept the lie going. Even when Jax saw him. Even when Trina & Joss & Maxie came through town and somehow did not see him. And worst of all, when Whiny Heiny saw him…. and that all inevitably resulted in that stupid empty bar getting burned, Phyllis, Sonny, and even Nina herself almost burning up inside, and her Aunt Liesel getting kidnapped. And by extension of that, you could even assign part of the blame to Nina for everything that happened on Cassadine Island, up to and including Jason’s supposed “death”. Because neither Jason, nor Liesel, nor even Heiny himself would have been on that island without the chain of events Nina set in motion.
That makes her as crazy as Redheaded Nina ever was. The things she has done since Sonny came back to Port Charles make her WORSE than that.
As far as I’m concerned she should be shoveling dragonshit in Hell’s stables, and hopefully will be soon. Just don’t send her down the same time as Heiny, because that’s too much psycho for even The Devil to handle all at once.
The devil can handle almost anything or anyone except…….! Carly and Jax kept the secret going about Nelle ; one bad idea needs a friend! Thanks to Carly , herself , she received her. Also , Nina didn’t keep Sonny in that town all of that time ; he was there before she got there. Anyway …….
You analyzed this perfectly. A lot of people say Carly deserves this after what she has done over the years, Trouble with that reasoning is that it could apply to almost every adult character on GH. The result would be a continuous circular firing squad. This psycho cut a baby out of woman’s stomach and said woman is now “friends” with her!
Thank you!! Nina is a nuts!!
You hit it on the nail. Nina needs to pay for all the hurt she caused.
I’m for Nina and Soony–
I’m more than sick of Carly..
She is the worst–She has been in love with
Jason from day one-
She kept him, made him like a second husband..
When Carly and Jason were getting married, remember, their conversations? Her love for Jason- Not a ‘friend’ love.
Carly confessed her love for Jason etc etc–
Carly was in a marriage with both Sonny and Jason to some extent.
I want something new- Sonny and Nina-
Looks like its Carly and Drew around the bend! And guess what, when they get comfortable, guess who will craw out from underneath the rubble, yes Jason Morgan!
Steve Burton aka Jason has stated he is not returning to GH. So, if the character is returning from the dead, it’ll be recast abd im sorry, but no one can play the part but Steve Burton…
I think it would be great if both Nina & Carly would give up on this depressing simpleton known as Sonny (or Mike or whoever). Really? THIS guy is the ultimate prize? Kick him to the curb and move on!
I was glued to her during the Annie years on GL! Still one of my favorite periods on any soap! Her, Reva and Josh, Dinah and Hart, Harley, Phillip and Beth, Alan, Vanessa and Kurt,Michelle,Danny and his mob mom, Drew and Jesse, Ross and Blake, and that crooked lawyer, the Doctor and the deaf girl( forget names) just to name a few. Every episode was cant miss really. So many amazing storylines and characters at any given time! Cynthias breakdown as Annie in the cabin is an iconic soap episode!
She was on y n r briefly as Kelly, I was so excited but she left shortly after and was recasted. I think if she stayed on she ‘d still be on the canvas. I dont watch GH but i imagine shes stellar on it.
Damien
Those were the days, weren’t they? They don’t write like that anymore. Everyone you mentioned was perfect. I watched that show since it started on TV and before that listened with my mother on the radio. Do you know who Billy was before they started calling him Ed? He was in a playpen when it first started on TV .On a sad note, too bad they did what they did at the end of the show with the crazy camera work, taking it on location so to speak out in the Boonies of N.J.
Really was. GL had soooo much history
I don’t understand why Sonny had anything to do with Nina. She cut Avery out of Ava and kidnapped her. How can Ava want anything to do with Nina after that? We all suspected Willow was Nina’s daughter and that Nina isn’t Wiley’s blood grandma. UGH!!! Sonny and Carly FOREVER!!!! I have to admit the actors are amazing…
Every one of those gals worked their tails off this year, even little Violet having to put up with some of her co-stars. As far as Nina and Sonny getting together, it would only be by default.Sonny doesn’t like to be alone and he will most likely turn to Nina once she knows he’s available.
I’m still not convinced she is Nelle’s mother, let alone Willow’s, so I am holding judgement on that one. Does anyone remember if they did a DNA on Nelle and Nina, I dont.
Now there’s another “daughter” with unknown mother… Ezmay!! Who was Ryan with that gave Ezmay up for adoption…. Is she Nina’s daughter? Or Ava? All these “ motherless” characters!!!
Nice lady; but this story has gone on way too long. Now we get boring Sonny/Nina hanging out at a bar in PC instead of Tan-O. Send all three on a break and concentrate on other stories and acting talent. One good point is acting all around in story.
Ava and the new Jordan have more chemistry with Sonny then nut job Nina.
Nina is self righteous and a wack job. Don’t give her the satisfaction of taking a woman’s husband. Never-mind her vendetta against Carly, she kept Sonny from his children and endangered the children with Sonny’s ‘business’ ties. Remember what Nina did to Ava(don’t like her either), but no one deserves to have their child ripped from them especially in such a brutal way. Nelle didn’t fall far from the tree and the damage they do to everyone in their path shouldn’t allow for a happy ending.

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).
Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.
Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON
Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”
Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).
Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.
“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?
During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.
Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.
You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.
Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.
Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.
As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY
Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.
Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.
Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS
Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.
In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Courtesy/ABC
Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”
So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.
