GH’s Cynthia Watros Talks On: Nina and Sonny and What’s Next, Her Co-Stars, and Her Daytime Emmy-Winning Role as GL’s Annie Dutton
One of the red-hot storylines on soaps is that of the Nina/Sonny/Carly triangle currently playing out on General Hospital which in turn has stirred up fans of the long-running ABC daytime drama.
At the epicenter of it all is Daytime Emmy-winning actress, Cynthia Watros, who plays the complex Nina Reeves and it was through her vendetta with Carly (Laura Wright), and her omission that she found Sonny (Maurice Benard) alive and well in Nixon Falls and living as an amnesiac named “Mike”, which opened the door to this unexpected alternate love story between Nina and Sonny.

Now, months later and with Sonny’s memory in tact, and back in Port Charles, viewers have seen: the implosion of Carly and Sonny’s marriage, Nina hitting the sheets with Sonny (which Carly walks in), and now the question becomes, what will be Nina’s state of play for the man she loves? Will she go after Sonny and find the happiness that seems to have alluded her in matters of the heart?
Michael Fairman chatted with Watros for an all-new virtual interview now on the Michael Fairman Channel about: all things Nina/Sonny/Carly, working with her GH co-stars, what she thinks would happen if Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) turns out to be Nina’s bio-child, and more.

In addition, we take a look back at Cynthia’s memorable run as Guiding Light’s Annie Dutton, the role that one her the Daytime Emmy back in 1998, and sharing scenes with the one and only Kim Zimmer (Reva), while playing the psychotic and villainess, Annie. Cynthia also talks on her time as Libby on ABC’s hit primetime series, Lost and much more.

Now let us know, what do you hope happens next for Nina? Do you want her and Sonny to be together? Do you hope Willow turns out to be Nina’s daughter? Do you hope Nina gets her comeuppance from Carly for what she did to her, and the Corinthos family, when Nina knew Sonny was alive? Share your thoughts in the comment section.
Great interview… team Nina all the way !
I really want Cynthia Watros to win the Daytime Emmy for Best Actress this year – I prefer her way more than Laura Wright’s shouty shrill self-righteous shtick over-acting. Hoping Kirsten Storms will submit in Supporting Actress so she can win an Emmy this year too! Cynthia for her overall work all year and Kirsten for the kidnapping/giving birth in the woods/confrontation of “Henrik” (Peter) and giving Louise to Brooklynn for Louise’s protection – yowzers!).
Nina (and Maxie) are my two favorite GH characters! She has really made Nina her own and she always has me riveted to my t.v. screen! So glad she has returned to daytime! I am Team Nina 100%! But… I don’t think Sonny is worth her time, he’s such a childish brat! (;
Cynthia IS Nina! I cannot even imagine Michelle Stafford as Nina at this point. And I was so wishing that Gina would have been Phyllis’s return from Milan on Y and R.
Maxie/Kirsten is doing some magic! So glad that GH gave her a very potent storyline, especially after her losing Nathan/Jay.
Overall, GH is doing a much better job than any other soap with driving characters and story simultaneously.
(Though I still miss The Guiding Light!!! – Happy Robert Newman is back on daytime at Y and R)
I find her so overrated and the year she won her Emmy it should have went to Eileen Davidson
Cynthia is an iconic daytime actress and Annie was a great and complex character that was played by the best. She deserved the Emmy that year and I remember her speech even if it has been 20+ years. GL was the better soap anyway and few will reach its 72 years.
Need Nina to get therapy because she needs it.
Yes she does!
Carly definitely needs it!
I really tried to like this version of Nina when she took over the role…. never cared for Psycho redhead Nina at all. In the beginning it seems like Cynthia’s version of Nina humanized the character. But that all seemed to stop when she found out Val the Bastard lied to her about Sasha being her daughter. OK… fair enough, that would upset anybody, I guess. Maybe she’ll get over that…
But no… she went from there right into blaming Carly for Psycho Nelle’s death, which was wrong on both counts. First, Nelle ain’t even dead, and second, Carly actually tried to save her. Which was rather generous of her, considering all that Nelle had done to Carly & her entire family.
Then there’s the whole Tricky Dick Nixon Falls saga…. you know, a Devil might have given a pass if Nina had felt a little pissy after that phone call she made to Carly, and decided to POSTPONE telling her about Sonny for a couple days or so. But no, she kept the lie going. Even when Jax saw him. Even when Trina & Joss & Maxie came through town and somehow did not see him. And worst of all, when Whiny Heiny saw him…. and that all inevitably resulted in that stupid empty bar getting burned, Phyllis, Sonny, and even Nina herself almost burning up inside, and her Aunt Liesel getting kidnapped. And by extension of that, you could even assign part of the blame to Nina for everything that happened on Cassadine Island, up to and including Jason’s supposed “death”. Because neither Jason, nor Liesel, nor even Heiny himself would have been on that island without the chain of events Nina set in motion.
That makes her as crazy as Redheaded Nina ever was. The things she has done since Sonny came back to Port Charles make her WORSE than that.
As far as I’m concerned she should be shoveling dragonshit in Hell’s stables, and hopefully will be soon. Just don’t send her down the same time as Heiny, because that’s too much psycho for even The Devil to handle all at once.
The devil can handle almost anything or anyone except…….! Carly and Jax kept the secret going about Nelle ; one bad idea needs a friend! Thanks to Carly , herself , she received her. Also , Nina didn’t keep Sonny in that town all of that time ; he was there before she got there. Anyway …….
You analyzed this perfectly. A lot of people say Carly deserves this after what she has done over the years, Trouble with that reasoning is that it could apply to almost every adult character on GH. The result would be a continuous circular firing squad. This psycho cut a baby out of woman’s stomach and said woman is now “friends” with her!
Thank you!! Nina is a nuts!!
You hit it on the nail. Nina needs to pay for all the hurt she caused.
I’m for Nina and Soony–
I’m more than sick of Carly..
She is the worst–She has been in love with
Jason from day one-
She kept him, made him like a second husband..
When Carly and Jason were getting married, remember, their conversations? Her love for Jason- Not a ‘friend’ love.
Carly confessed her love for Jason etc etc–
Carly was in a marriage with both Sonny and Jason to some extent.
I want something new- Sonny and Nina-
Looks like its Carly and Drew around the bend! And guess what, when they get comfortable, guess who will craw out from underneath the rubble, yes Jason Morgan!
Steve Burton aka Jason has stated he is not returning to GH. So, if the character is returning from the dead, it’ll be recast abd im sorry, but no one can play the part but Steve Burton…
I think it would be great if both Nina & Carly would give up on this depressing simpleton known as Sonny (or Mike or whoever). Really? THIS guy is the ultimate prize? Kick him to the curb and move on!
I was glued to her during the Annie years on GL! Still one of my favorite periods on any soap! Her, Reva and Josh, Dinah and Hart, Harley, Phillip and Beth, Alan, Vanessa and Kurt,Michelle,Danny and his mob mom, Drew and Jesse, Ross and Blake, and that crooked lawyer, the Doctor and the deaf girl( forget names) just to name a few. Every episode was cant miss really. So many amazing storylines and characters at any given time! Cynthias breakdown as Annie in the cabin is an iconic soap episode!
She was on y n r briefly as Kelly, I was so excited but she left shortly after and was recasted. I think if she stayed on she ‘d still be on the canvas. I dont watch GH but i imagine shes stellar on it.
Damien
Those were the days, weren’t they? They don’t write like that anymore. Everyone you mentioned was perfect. I watched that show since it started on TV and before that listened with my mother on the radio. Do you know who Billy was before they started calling him Ed? He was in a playpen when it first started on TV .On a sad note, too bad they did what they did at the end of the show with the crazy camera work, taking it on location so to speak out in the Boonies of N.J.
Really was. GL had soooo much history
I don’t understand why Sonny had anything to do with Nina. She cut Avery out of Ava and kidnapped her. How can Ava want anything to do with Nina after that? We all suspected Willow was Nina’s daughter and that Nina isn’t Wiley’s blood grandma. UGH!!! Sonny and Carly FOREVER!!!! I have to admit the actors are amazing…
Every one of those gals worked their tails off this year, even little Violet having to put up with some of her co-stars. As far as Nina and Sonny getting together, it would only be by default.Sonny doesn’t like to be alone and he will most likely turn to Nina once she knows he’s available.
I’m still not convinced she is Nelle’s mother, let alone Willow’s, so I am holding judgement on that one. Does anyone remember if they did a DNA on Nelle and Nina, I dont.
Now there’s another “daughter” with unknown mother… Ezmay!! Who was Ryan with that gave Ezmay up for adoption…. Is she Nina’s daughter? Or Ava? All these “ motherless” characters!!!
Nice lady; but this story has gone on way too long. Now we get boring Sonny/Nina hanging out at a bar in PC instead of Tan-O. Send all three on a break and concentrate on other stories and acting talent. One good point is acting all around in story.
Ava and the new Jordan have more chemistry with Sonny then nut job Nina.
Nina is self righteous and a wack job. Don’t give her the satisfaction of taking a woman’s husband. Never-mind her vendetta against Carly, she kept Sonny from his children and endangered the children with Sonny’s ‘business’ ties. Remember what Nina did to Ava(don’t like her either), but no one deserves to have their child ripped from them especially in such a brutal way. Nelle didn’t fall far from the tree and the damage they do to everyone in their path shouldn’t allow for a happy ending.

‘General Hospital’s’ Dominic Zamprogna Reflects on Dante’s Guilt for the ‘Atrocity’ That Happened to Michael Which Kept Everyone From Telling Him the Truth About Rocco

On recent episodes of General Hospital, acting PCPD Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) was the last to know when his ex-wife Lulu (Alexa Havins), his cop/friend “Nathan,” (Ryan Paevey) and his son, Rocco (Finn Carr) kept in the dark from learning that Rocco actually shot WSB director, Ross Cullum (Andrew Hawkes) which set off a chain of events leading to Rocco joining Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud) and going on the run from Port Charles.
However, what led to everyone being so secretive and keeping the truth from Dante stems, in part, to what happened back in 2010. In story, Michael Corinthos (then played by Chad Duell) was brutally assaulted and rape by his prison inmate, Carter (Josh Wingate). Michael went to prison when his brother, Dante, then a PCPD detective, forced Michael to testify in court about killing his stepmother, Claudia Zacchara (Sarah Brown). That testimony resulted in Michael being sentenced to prison for her murder.
In early 2011, Michael admitted out loud to Jason (Steve Burton) for the first time that he was raped. The guilt of that situation has plagued Dante for years, and fast-forward 16 years later, it’s still very much alive in Dante’s character life as explained by Dominic Zamprogna in his recent interview on the Michael Fairman Channel.

RORY GIBSON RECAST PERFECT TIME TO BRING BACK THE STORY POINT
Zamprogna spoke of Dante’s son current plight, and how it dovetails into the past for the acting police commissioner. “The situation with Rocco is just this awful scenario that this kid is in and wanting to try and do the best for him. The other thing, I liked too was from the other people’s perspectives of Dante in the past, he kind of did right by the law, not by the people, or put too much faith in the law, and expected it to work out for the people he loved, and it didn’t. So, it gave them a reason for keeping things from him as well.”
The five-time Daytime Emmy nominee shared its important to remember things in the history of your character you play and when GH decided to recast the role of Michael Corinthos with Rory Gibson, it was the perfect time to remind viewers of what happened all those years ago.
“The idea that when you’re on a show this long, I do think about those elements because there’s so much story. The scenes that I think of immediately with the Michael situation was with Chad gone, and then Rory came in. They (the writers) chose that moment to kind of literally say in the dialogue when we were at the Quartermaines, “You’ve changed since you came back from Europe and you’re a different guy and you’re darker.’ I think I said all these things. Frank Valentini (executive producer, GH) calls (Rory’s version) ‘Dark Michael.’ It’s true.

DANTE’S GUILT OVER MICHAEL’S BRUTAL PRISON ASSAULT LINGERS
“That was the first time my character brought that up in what had happened to Michael so long ago. I’d love to play those beats more often. You can’t beat that to death because it was 16 years ago, but you also can’t act like it never happened. Sometimes in the world that we live in, the soap world, you do act like things don’t happen because how could people carry on with that kind of guilt, you know? Every time I looked at Michael, Dante would feel responsible for the atrocity that happened to him. So, there’s a balance. You can’t think about it every time, but you definitely have to acknowledge it. This was the perfect time to acknowledge it with the character of Michael because of the recast.
Now over the last several months, Dante was kept from the truth all stemming back to this moment. Zamprogna recalled, “It was the first kind of domino that fell in bringing back that history. Then you had Britt coming back and that brought back that history of the embryo with Dante and Lulu. It was fun to be able to play pissed-off with these people who I love. So, you got to play the love underneath and the anger on top, and it was all because of his past. So, it all kind of brought things back and it completed something.
CAN LULU AND DANTE FIND ROCCO AND BRITT IN TIME?
At the end of Friday’s June 19 cliffhanger, Dante and Lulu learned from Nathan where Rocco and Britt are hiding out and take off to find their son. How will that go? Can the execs get along for the sake of their son? Stay tuned.
In case you missed our conversation with Dominic Zamprogna you can check it out below.
Do you believe given what happened with Michael Corinthos in the past, everyone had the right to hide what happened to Rocco from Dante? What do you remember from the harrowing story of Michael’s rape in prison by Carter? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.

Finola Hughes First Airdate Back to ‘General Hospital’ Revealed: But What Will Be the State of Anna Devane’s Mental Health?

The highly-anticipated return of Daytime Emmy winner, Finola Hughes (Anna Devane) to General Hospital is just around the corner. It’s next week! Anna’s back starting with the Wednesday June 24 episode of the ABC daytime drama series.
Hughes has been off the soap opera on-screen since February. Now, the question becomes, when viewers see Anna, will she be in the same condition she was when we last saw her? Believing Cesar Faison is alive, and traumatized from the hallucinogenic drugs she was served up from Cullum (Andrew Hawkes), Sidwell (Carlo Rota) and company while held captive at Wyndemere?
Anna was last seen in a mental clinic in France, but also left word of her captivity on the wall inside the secret room at Wyndemere where Josslyn (Eden McCoy) and Obrecht (Kathleen Gati) are now being held against their will, too!

ANNA ON HER WAY BACK TO PORT CHARLES?
Even though Finola Hughes has not been on the canvas for months, Anna has certainly been talked about. In fact, super spy Anna, nearly escaped and made it as far as Switzerland before being recaptured. Since that time she is said to be housed at a high-security institution. We were then told that Congresswoman Willow Cain (Katelyn MacMullen) went to bat for Anna with the authorities overseas, and had her transferred to a more comfortable facility.
How will Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) play into saving Anna? We know he flipped out after learning what was happening and tried to phone the facility as Dr. Kevin Collins, but that backfired making him public enemy number one with the WSB.
Here’s what to look for on episodes featuring Finola Hughes on her first week back below:
On Wednesday, June 24 official General Hospital spoilers share: Anna meets with her doctor. Carly makes a stunning confession. Britt extracts a promise. Cullum pulls a fast one. Gio and Emma hit the pool.
Then, when we next see Anna on the Friday, June 26 episode, official GH spoilers add: Anna takes a huge risk. Britt is in grave danger. Willow is in disbelief. Danny must act fast. Curtis jumps to the wrong conclusion.
ANNA/VALENTIN/CARLY
In addition, General Hospital co-head writers, Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten teased summer story to Soap Opera Digest, including some intel on Anna’s return to Port Charles. The scribes shared that Anna’s presence doesn’t mean that Rocco (Finn Carr) is out of the woods for shooting Cullum, and that Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) would face some hard questions from the super spy as well, plus a major decision made by Jason (Steve Burton) is said to have big implications for Anna.
There is also the fact that while Anna was in a mental facility in France, Carly (Laura Wright) and Valentin have become lovers and developed feelings for one another while in Port Charles. Will a triangle ensue? Stay tuned.
So, what do you think will be Anna’s mental state when viewers see her next week on GH? Will she be OK? Suffer from PTSD? Be faking it at this point, or be a changed woman? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Sidwell Surfaces; A Twist in Britt’s Condition

On the Thursday, June 18 episode of General Hospital, Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota) makes his shocking return right in Port Charles, after fleeing (thanks to Cassius) to supposedly parts unknown to escape capture for trying to kill Dr. Lucas Jones (Van Hansis).
How does he show up in town? First, Ezra (Daniel Cosgrove) gets a text from Jacinda (Paige Herschell) to meet in his hotel room. Ezra thinks the two are going to have a sexcapade so he puts champagne on ice for his favorite escort.
Suddenly, there is a knock at the door. Ezra’s excitement turns towards fear as instead of Jacinda, Sidwell is standing in front of him. Next, Sidwell blackmails Boyle telling him he has plenty of leverage he can use against him. Sidwell wants to use Ezra to help him takedown, Sonny (Maurice Benard), Lucas, Laura (Genie Francis) and Cullum.

Courtesy/ABC
ARE SIDWELL’S DAYS NUMBERED?
Meanwhile, Sonny confides in his brother, Ric (Rick Hearst). He says he knows who killed Marco an he is going to use that intel to lure Sidwell out of hiding. Sonny also shares he is going to kill Sidwell, and handle this by himself. He gave the PCPD a chance, but they failed to nab Sidwell for good and lock him up.
Sonny also has been tracking the whereabouts of Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) and Rocco (Finn Carr) through Brick, and learned they took a flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and then boarded a fairy to take them somewhere off the island.

Courtesy/ABC
BRITT’S ‘SYMPTOMS’ RETURN
Turns out, Britt and Rocco are hiding out in the British Virgin Islands. Britt set up Rocco with a burner phone and a VPN on her tablet, that is not traceable. Rocco reads on the tablet about Lucas’ shooting. Britt starts to have the shakes and passes out. When she comes to, Britt won’t let Rocco call a doctor, but he uses his phone to step on the balcony and call Charlotte (Bluesy Burke) and ask for help. Charlotte looks shocked to hear from her brother as Danny (Asher Antonyzyn) looks on!

Courtesy/ABC
However, Joe (Jonathan Bennett) could be the one to put two and two together! While at General Hospital and after questioning Lucas about a syringe he found that was in someone’s possession. the toxicology report showed traces of saline solution, not actual medication. He asks Dr. Jones, why someone would inject themselves with saline? Lucas responds saline is harmless and would have no effect on someone.
So, does this mean that this entire time, Britt has been led to believe that the medication she was taking to treat her Huntington’s disease was placebo? Has Britt been lied to into believing she is dying? Is something else wrong with her instead?
Share your thoughts and theories via the comment section below, and if you are ready for Sidwell to finally get his comeuppance from Sonny! But first, watch the scenes where Sidwell comes out of hiding and blackmails Ezra Boyle.
