GH's Jane Elliot on Playing Tracy Q and Being in a Love Triangle with Luke and Anna!

The reclusive Jane Elliot of General Hospital has a fantastic interview out with TV Guide, where the actress who has played Tracy Quartermaine for all she is worth and then some talks about  her character, the new GH regime, working with six-time Daytime Emmy winner, Anthony Geary (Luke) and having her upcoming first romantic triangle!   Not one to give many press interviews, this one was as compelling as ever.  Below are a few interesting excerpts!

Jane on how she is made playing a villainess work so well:  “Somebody has to wear the black hat and give the audience someone to shake their fists at. They want someone to hate.   And if that’s what you want to pay me to do, I’m happy to do it! A show owes it to the audience to give them a place to vent.  There is a profound contrast between the way I live my life and what I do when I go to work.  I never get the two of us confused.  I never wear makeup.  I certainly don’t dress like Tracy. I don’t have a Twitter account. I don’t go to fan club gatherings. I ‘m not one of those actors who spends a lot of time engaging with the audience.  I’m fierce about my anonymity, which is why it’s easy for me to play the villain. I’m not close enough to the audience to have them throw a pie in my face because of something Tracy just did.”

Jane on Frank Valentini taking over as EP of General Hospital:  “Frank Valentini is as good as it gets.  He has that old-fashioned Gloria Monty commitment to the job and is the first one in the building in the morning and the last one out at night. And he works all weekend! This is not to say that the people before him didn’t care, but he’s committed to this show in a very unique way.  There’s no substitute for loving the medium. You know that saying “A new broom sweeps clean”? Well, that’s Frank. As good as [former exec producer] Jill Phelps was and as much as I loved working with her, a new broom sweeps clean. Frank comes to this show with fresh eyes, with no disappointments, no frustrations over lost battles. He comes with everything he has to give.”

Jane on the fact that GH has recently remembered Tracy’s mob ties of the past!  “It was the biggest thrill when current head writer Ron Carlivati came to GH.  I tried for nine years to get Bob Guza to acknowledge that Tracy had been married to a member of the mob in New York and he completely ignored it.  But within minutes of Ron getting there he brought it up, and I love him for that! I’m told that they’re going to do a love triangle with Anna Luke and Tracy, and how thrilling would that be?  How good is that? In all my years on GH, Tracy has never been in a triangle!

Gotta love Jane Elliot!  So who would you like to see Luke Spencer end up with if it’s a choice between Tracy or Anna?  Weigh-in!

While I did like the interview, I’m rather disappointed there wasn’t more. I want to see her discuss her time soaps overall, not just General Hospital. I want to see her discuss her first stint on General Hospital and what it was like. I’d love to see her talk about her time on Guiding Light, All My Children, and Days. There’s so much that can be talked about here.

i would like that too david but michael only gave us excerpts so i guess we will need to buy tv guide to get the full interview……

just click on the TV Guide link in the first paragraph above to get to the full article! 🙂 She talks about her (tracy’s) history back on The City, 3 decades + on GH, and about an old 1969 movie she did with Elvis & Mary Tyler Moore! It’s a good read!

Thanks Michael for always giving us the link to the full articles.

Definitely Tracy and Luke..not Anna

I love that Anna is back, but I agree with Debbie – Tracy and Luke all the way!!!! I love their dynamic together – touching, loving, humorous yet volatile at times – they bring it all to the table, when they are together!!! Great and honest interview from Jane!!!!

I agree, The very last thing I want to see is anna getting involved with Luke. Close friends yes, friends with benefits no, no, no.

I don’t want Anna with Luke either……………….They don’t make a good couple at all…….They should just stay friends.. Any thing else would be WEIRD!!!!!!!!!!

Love Jane and Tracy. Hope she and GH will be around for many more years to come.

i am hoping for luke & tracy – i love anna but luke & tracy can really go dark & anna is not cut out that way…………..

Jane is awesome, not sure i’m thrill about the show going in the triangle route w/ Tracy, Luke an Anna. I was actually loving the Luke and Anna “Friendship” it just sucks that for two great actors of the opposite sex to work together it has to be about them hooking up. instead of shows trying to always tell stories on couples or triangle, why can’t they tell beautiful stories on friendship? I like Luke w/ Laura or Tracy, and was loving the friend story of luke and anna, but if it is now going to turn into a love story or love mess, then i’m not as interested.

ARIA, That’s how I feel what’s wrong with a man and a woman being very good close friends with out the romance? I want that to happen with Luke and Anna.

There is only one man for Anna…and that’s Robert Scorpio. With that said….it would be interesting to see a triangle between Anna, Luke and Tracy. But only if Scorpio comes back and throws a wrench in the whole thing. 🙂 She can’t stay with Luke.

Isn’t Robert off with Holly now? Wasn’t Holly one of his great loves? Why wouldn’t he stay with Holly?

Oh…it’s a loooong story! LOL! It’s also an age old debate as to who was his greatest love…Anna or Holly. I’m of the solid opinion that Anna was his greatest love and the best match for him. I think he belongs with her. I’m still waiting for their happily ever after… But many people will disagree. I just think it would be a great story for Robert to come back and find out that Luke lied to him AND hooked up Anna. Any time you can have Robert, Luke, Anna and other vets on screen is great to me. It also seems that Frank Valentini will treat the history of these characters with respect and care. They got my attention! I have high hopes for GH. 🙂

Anna and Robert do belong together. That’s my happily ever after to.

To me they are the greatest soap couple ever…it was simply true love at its best between the two of them. The writing was so awesome back then…but I have to believe they will have their happily ever after with the new writers. Fingers crossed. In the meantime you can watch all of their old stories from start to finish on youtube. Go to the Robert and Anna channel…Warning…you won’t be able to stop once you start! Those stories are still captivating!

I agree w/barbara t……………………………..

Hope, Thanks for letting me know, I will go to u tube Id love to see the beginning and through till they broke up which was sad.Thanks.

You’re welcome! Enjoy! 🙂

Tracy and Luke they are too good together and offer up too much story opportunities. Anna and Luke are great friends and would hate to lose that… but Tracy is Lukes yang.

Yeah shes Luke’s Spanky buns.I love tracy and luke together. Anna needs someone else now that Robert is gone.He can always come back, with Robin.

Sorry it will always be Luke & Laura for me but we have moved on so I guess Luke & Tracy, not feeling it but that’s ok differnt time different moment!!!

hey Barbara… I think it’s more than a triangle coming up for Luke. I do like the chemistry, and comedy, of Luke with Tracy best. I see Luke caring for and protecting Anna, but wait — let’s not forget the other party lurking around waiting for her chance to pounce on Luke and claim him for her own, and willing to do whatever she wants to Tracy, Anna or anyone else she perceives as a threat — that of course if Heather! I think Luke is in for much more than he’s planned on with Heather out on the loose. And have we even seen him run into Felicia yet? 🙂 I could totally see Heather putting all 3 of those women locked up together so she can get Luke to herself.

I love Jane Elliot, and all the repsect she shows for the show, Ron, and Frank. It’s easy to see why and how GH is regaining it’s “powerhouse” status.

I adore Anna and love the friendship between her and Luke, but Tracy & Luke is the best combo ever!

They layers, nuances, panning scenery…. the scene, where, Luke is in the ER, telling Lulu, who was shot, “i don’t know what i’d do if i lost you”… camera focuses on Anna, who holds her breath, with Elizabeth watching Anna… Dag! I broke down… sobbed for their losses… FINALLY, I’m believing Elizabeth has an outlet to reach in to, i never quite believed elizabeths scenes over losing jake (IMO she never really emoted her loss)… till Anna bumped back in to town. Anna is the lightning rod Port Charles needed. Anna tears up and wells up so much emotion… over Robin… and the tender scenes with Luke are heartfelt, and could lead to a romance. that being said… Tracy, is the quartermaine… along, with Monica… Tracy and Anthony are humorous. the quips tracy, has with both anthony and Luke are GH priceless… altho, for my money… it was Sky and Luke who had me going…. the lady quartermaines…. Tracy, Monica, and Sky… were a fierce trio. i kinda thought their was some spark with anna and mac… thro in alexis… finally giving mac his due. mentioning, that it was mac who took care of robin and maxie… now that’s class… and first rate.

I don’t remember that old movie she was in, but it would be fun to watch her portraying a nun! 🙂

I believe it was called” change of habit”, With Mary tyler moore and elvis was in it.I would like to see it to, Its a oldie.

I saw that movie………….Hasn’t been the t.v. for a while……………

yes, after reading the full interview (link in 1st paragraph) I looked up the movie on the movie database and saw photos from the movie… I don’t remember it. Never saw it. Mostly remember Ann Margaret/Elvis movies….

Always fascinating to see what Jane Elliott has to say, but I do think she’s mistaken when she says that Tracy was never before in a triangle. Seems to me that back in her first few years on the show, Tracy was in a triangle with Mitch Williams and Susan Moore.

Michael you are right she was also fighting for a guy with Jenny Eckhart they were Luke & Bobbies cousins back in the days of Gloria Monty. It was when TG came back and played the character of Bill Eckhart that family kinda fell flat.

Kay killgore, I agree with you about Luke and Laura being together but the writers of general hospital for some reason or the other didn’t want them together anymore and we all know the results to that, laura was written out of gh ( I still can’t believe they never brought her back to stay) And luke and tracy got together.

Luke & Anna as friends is fun but I agree with most who say they should stay that way. Anna is not giving off a vibe of being attracted to him anyway (last time I checked) so let’s leave it at that. Still waiting for a Duke & Anna reunion done Jesse & Angie style! They were the greatest 80s SuperCouple IMO with Robert & Holly a close second.Luckily R&H are off together somewhere.

I like Luke being a good supportive friend to Anna…
…and that’s how the relationship should stay.
I love the “goodies” between Luke and Tracy…they should get back together.

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

Published

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

Photo: JPI

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

Published

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.

Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.

As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY

Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.

Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS

Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.

In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”

So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.
