GH's Steve Burton Chats On Jason's Complicated Life With Sam, Elizabeth, and Franco!

For Jason Morgan, there have been many shocking developments in recent months on General Hospital. The woman he loves Sam, gets raped by Franco! Then she is pregnant, and has a baby, that Jason can’t deal with because it’s his twin brother, Franco’s! But fate and Todd and Heather intervene and that baby ends up in the hands of Tea Delgado, and Sam grieves the loss of her child. However, little does Jason know he is the true bio-dad! As Sam and Jason’s marriage starts to unravel, she turns to John McBain, who Sam has some kind of magnetic pull towards. Sam kisses him. Jason then kisses his old flame, Elizabeth and we are off to the races in the complicated life of one of the all-time most popular characters on daytime television.
But even more popular than the loveable hit man Jason Morgan, is the Daytime Emmy winning actors who portrays him day in and day out, Steve Burton. On-Air On-Soaps chatted with Steve at the General Hospital on-set Emmy victory celebration. We checked in with the soap superstar to get his thoughts on GH’s new regime, JaSam’s perils, the lip-lock with Elizabeth, and Franco, who even though he is not on the canvas still haunts the cast of characters! After the jump, read what Steve had to share on the myriad of subjects!
Has it been a big adjustment for you having the new GH regime come in under EP Frank Valentini, and seeing the old regime under former EP, Jill Farren Phelps go away?

STEVE: Change is always difficult for everybody. For Frank’s crew coming in, for our crew, and for the crew leaving. There is always a period of feeling everybody out and if everyone is jellin’ and vibin’. Some people lose their jobs. Some people get new jobs. We got though that and it’s good. It’s great that the show won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. To win ten Emmys considering where Daytime is, that is amazing! All around everything has been good.
Do you think head writer, Ron Carlivati gets Jason Morgan? Have you seen a change in the way Jason is written? Former GH head scribe, Bob Guza was so integral to so many of Jason’s stories and so much of his history.
STEVE: Yes. I think it is difficult when new writers come in who haven’t written for you before. There is going to be that period of talking to Frank, or talking to Ron, and saying, “Hey we need to try this, and this is where I would kind of go here.” They have been open to it. Frank wants to know. He has said, “You know the history better than we do. So, let’s talk about it.” They have been open that way, which is great. It is what it is, and you move on and do your thing.

Has it been hard to play this recent beat in the story with Jason kissing Elizabeth, Sam finding solace with John McBain, and the baby-switch drama? Do you think the powers-that-be really needed to attempt to break up Jason and Sam at this point?
STEVE: Listen, most writers don’t like couples happy. So for us, we were like, “Oh we are going to get a week of happiness!” And then, that ended so quickly. I understand why they did it. But for me, I would love to not play dead baby, break up, kill myself or someone story. I would rather have a week or two of happiness. It’s just a new show now at GH.
How has it been getting to work again with Becky Herbst (Elizabeth)? There is such passion from all the fan bases right now involving Jason’s gals!
STEVE: It’s good drama working with Becky. I love it. People are going crazy right now because of everything, and that is what they want. They want people talking.

What did you think of the Franco reveal, when lo and behold, he turns out to be Jason’s twin? Did you know about the story was ultimately going to unravel this way?
STEVE: No, I didn’t know! That was made up the new regime, I believe. I had no idea. I was like, “What?” It was difficult to get the words out of my mouth, “My bro! You are my twin?” I think I am ten years older than James Franco! (Laughs) That was hard to say. I guess, I could have a worse twin that James Franco, right? (Laughs)
What can fans look forward to coming up with Jason?
STEVE: For Jason, Sam, and Elizabeth, it’s just beginning from what I hear! And I yell, “How can it be just beginning?” As I punch myself! (Laughs) We don’t even expect the twists and turns that are coming. I don’t read my scripts till the night before I shoot. So when I look at it I go, “Oh! Wow! OK? How are we going to do this one?” So there are always surprises for all of us. I think it’s been good for the fans. They are engaged. They care. That is what you need. Whether they like it or not, you want them to have an opinion, if they have no opinion, than we suck! (Laughs)

When you and Kelly Monaco (Sam) saw in the scripts that the baby “died” and there was going to be a baby-switch, what went through your minds initially?
STEVE: Well, it was more that we both thought, “Just give Jason and Sam their baby and let them relax for awhile and then do something.” Let them be a family. We have been going so long to get to this point to have it ripped out. And for me, I did not want to have to play: divorce, dead baby, cheating on me, cheating on you. It’s drama, but that is what we do! That is what you got to do if you are on a soap.

Stelly are in sync with JaSam fans we would have liked some Morgan family time and happiness before they ripped them apart to play with hardly no screen time alone! EC/FV need to balance and fix this!

I just hope Steve Burton renews his contract. I can’t get my Elizabeth and Jason reunion without Jason! I’m loving what Ron and Frank have given us with Jason and Elizabeth so far. Now if they really want to hit it out of the park and get people talking then they need to bring back Jake!!!
To bring back a dead baby would be senseless. Ron and Frank have been hitting it out the park over the past several months. We’re moving forward.
Not senseless…great soapy storytelling. Killing Jake, a character tied to three legacy families, was senseless and cost GH probably close to half a million viewers.
I would love to see Jason and Elizabeth go in search of Jake, get trapped together, have a long overdue fight about Lucky and Sam, make love, and rescue Jake. I agree with Steve…Jason needs more to smile about and nothing made him smile more than Jake!
Guza fixed that with killing off Jake he did not like the character of Liz. That is why as much chemistry as Jason & Liz have Guza made sure that ship sailed. I would prefer RH not be used as a prop for Sam & Jason. I would prefer RH having her own storyline, I had my closure with those characters on the bridge months ago on Jakes birthday.
Love it! Mr. Burton is totally right. Introducing Elizabeth into the story and back into Jason’s world totally has people talking. Shaking things up, getting people invested and talking and watching to see what happens next… isn’t that what we all want when we tune into any show? I know this is THE story I’m watching. I can’t wait to see what happens next and I’m thrilled to hear it’s just the beginning.

I can not tolerate another scene of Jason and Sam, I can not stand that awful couple.

The writers ruined the history of JaSam! The Jason and Sam I have loved all these years would never have broken their vows. I can’t even watch anymore I am sorry to say. My favorite couple are destroyed.
I have to agree…Jason and Sam are so out of character for each of them and together…but her rape by Franco has yet to be dealt with and I think Heather holds the key…I think she is so crazy that Franco could trust her to carry out his plan. At least this is what I am hoping for! I finally like Liz enough to tolerate her…she had moved on and still points Jason to Sam…Please keep things as exciting as they are but move Jason and Sam back to finding their son…and maybe two weeks more of happiness.
i love the show but if Jason and SAM are not together i don’t watch it every day. i have watch this show for over twenty five years and i want to watch it more but if you don’t give Jason and SAM there happens then a lot of people are going to be mad. Liz need some one she can be with not Jason because she does not like his work and SAM is the only one that is all for it.
Love how you can tell that SBu isn’t into the crap they are trying to sell with regards to JaSam, just like the fans aren’t! Here’s to hoping RC realizes it too before it’s too late. I would love to be able to watch GH again…

I so agree with your statement!!! I will be so happy when Jascam is killed off.. Most boring couple in GH history… So sick of watching and hearing about them.. Let them move on.. The most out of character thing on GH was Jason forgiving Sam… that would of never happened, if Guza didnt hate Liz/Liason… He only wanted to write for Scam/Jascam.. There are also many many people that disagree with this comment. I personally would not try and speak for others as you did, but to say many many for one side, there is sure to have many many for the other side. SO relieved I never bought into the awful Jason character or any of his pairings so I wouldn’t feel emotionally let down by this enormous tug-of-war-with-no-winner Ron is capitalizing on right now.

I am on the side of wanting some change on GH. Sam and Jason had 3, close to 4 years of being together, in a commited relationship, with out relationship problems. So freaking what if they break up now. It’s about dang time! Can’t wait for some good ol soapy drama!
I wont be watching anything Jason/Liz. There is nothing new or interesting about inserting Liz again into JaSam when they are falling apart. Been there, done that.

The ratings are absolutely not up… Tues was a 1.5 and Thurs was higheset at 1.8, averaging a 1.7……. GH lost viewers in last ratings report while Days GAINED viewers… so it can’t be blamed on the fourth of July… sad that this is happening to GH.. hope RC and FV can/will fix this…. I would start with bringing back RC Cates….. and I would also fix JaSam…..

People are talking but are we watching? For me Jason Morgan /jasam overload is one of the reasons I stopped watching the show. I think he’s right when he says they needed to wait “a couple of weeks” before destroying jasam because during that time of soap couple happiness jasam could be backburnered and the fans might be brought back with our fave character front and center. unfortunately (even with the oltl cast) the show is still all about jasam and that has proven to be a ratings killer. I stopped watching BECAUSE they broke Jason and Sam up. The only refresher I need is for Sam to find out her baby is alive and for Jason to find out he is the Father. Give them some happiness before all this terrible writing. Whatever happens between Jason and Liz is what it is. But not at the expense of a couple that is beloved by thousands of fans.

How has it proven to be a rating killer. If I remember back in 07 ratings dropped, I could blame that on the Jasam breakup, and Liz and Jason hook up. But I wont, because there are many reasons for ratings. The fact that you feel the ratings are droping because of Jasam tells me you are not seeing the full picture. Maybe people are tuning out because these new writers clearly don’tknow the characters of GH, including Sam and Jason. Very well said. How can anyone with common sense say that the ratings are low because of Jason and Sam when we have all of these stories and couples on GH; but it is low because Jason is with Sam. Who watches or does not watch just because Jason Mogran is with Sam McCall? there are many reasons why fans watch or stop watching Soaps, but believe me, if they stop because their fav couples is not together then the writers definately are NOT doing a great job of story telling. Great interview!! Absolutely LOVE Steve Burton. Love that he mentions the old and new crew too…. I understand Steve and the cast have adjusted and accepted, but I think part of the difference I feel in GH has to do with the loss of the old crew. Especially RC Cates the background music guy… he was PERFECT for GH and FV really NEEDS to get him back. This is the one thing FV could do to INSTANTLY improve General Hospital right now. I agree. Over all the show has lost the look and feel of Gh. Im not exactly sure how RC and FV feel about Jasam, but I do feel they are abusing his couple for a reason. I feel that they are using this popular couple to bring in for acceptence, Michael Easton. I personally don’t feel this characters has any place in GH, other than to create a what if, that FV loved so much. I know I don’t..That’s why I lost interest and now getting back into it…I like GH best years ago with Dr. Hardy, Jessie,Audry,Lucille & the baldwins ..At this time GH was booming……At that time it was heart-warming…They got away from those kind of stories for quite a while now….And this is what made GH such a success…………………..I miss these kind of stories ….They need a blast from the past…This is what made GH popular….

Not really liking anything about the show now..I have watched GH for well over 30 yrs religiously and have waited 8 years for Jasam to have a family..What a let down..I hardly watch live any longer and don’t bother to DVR..I pretty much rely on the internet to decide if it is worth watching..What I am seeing on GH now is OLTL stories being played out by GH actors..I didnt like OLTL in its final years and I dont like it on GH.There is absolutley no love in the afternoon anylonger..Just godawfull despair and depression..

Well I am a huge Jasam fan and I can tell you that its really sad what RC has done to them. Jasam have been hit with all kind of drama for so long, there is nothing to root for Jasam. I agree with you. I have loved Jasam from the very beginning and even the first breakup didnt bother me all that much because I figured they would get back together as I am pretty sure they are end game this time. I do not think these knew writers know the background of this couple or they wouldnt have them cheating on each other especially since they are married. It makes me sick and when Sam kissed John and Jason kissed Liz, I turned the channel.

I have fond memories of watching GH as a child, unfortunately, I’m not enjoying GH any more. I find it very difficult to get through the show. Since FV & RC came, they have broken up every couple, all the characters seem to be saying & doing things that are not true to how we, as fans, know them to be. There is so much angst, cheating, disloyalty, lying, killing, it’s just all too depressing. Why does everyone on GH have to be raped as a jumping off point for a new storyline? FV and RC are breaking Jasam up because THEY brought in “the lowest ratings ever.” 170, 000 more viewers actually watched McBam kiss than they did Jasam reunion sex in 2009, despite both episodes garnering a 1.7 rating. Except Jasam didn’t have a public holiday as an excuse for their poor ratings. If Jasam was profitable they’d be together. RC and FV are now trying something new. The John/Sam cheat kiss was on a Friday and had the highest ratings for that week. And that’s saying something considering there was supposed to be a boycott by Jasam fans on that particular Friday and Monday for the “cheat kisses.” The ratings for the Jason/Elizabeth kiss aren’t due out until this Thursday or Friday.
Actually that is COMPLETELY untrue… John and Sam kiss only got a 1.7… thurs show was the highest with a 1.8.
Christi you’re absolutely right;Thursday was the highest rated day. However, Friday, the day of the John/Sam Cheat kiss had the most viewers for the week. 2,488,000 and only garnered a 1.7 compared to Thursday, a 1.8 day which only garnered 2,301,000.

Well I do agree that Gh is a better show, but I don’t like the break up of jason and Sam, whom are long overdue for some happiness. I don’t mind OneLifer’s being on board, ‘ here and there ‘, perhaps for short term roles from 3 to 5 months. sorry but the kisses had much higher ratings, the Jascam wedding and baby had very low ratings… and soap weddings usually are great, but not theres, they barely got a 1.7
Way to make stuff up and try to sell it as truth… The ratings were in the 2.0s for the wedding. They haven’t been that high since. And ratings since RC started writing have been the worst! The whole show sucks!
@ tammy after I read your post I checked the ratings for the wedding it happened Thursday 22 September 2011 and continued throughout the next week. For the week of the wedding the ratings were 1.9, 1.9, 1.8, 2.0 & 2.0 respectively. Please check your facts before you post I can’t tell you the last time GH got 2.0 ratings.

As a long-time fan of the Elizabeth/Jason pairing, I am thrilled with the new direction! The Liason fanbase literally got 30 seconds of happiness after the engagement so I, for one, am not crying for the Jasam fans! I want soapy goodness and chemistry and Liz/Jason are giving me that in spades!

I have been on the bring back Jake bandwagon too, only because I thought it would be good for ratings.. but someone pointed out to me that they saw his body AND his organs were donated… :/ I had thought it would be fun to have Claudia have him , a gift from Franco lol … I can just Claudia raging after Jake is taken from her and given back to Liz..

We had waited for so long for Jason and Sam to be married and have a child of their own, then finally it happened, and it’s ripped away from them. It’s awful, Steve and Kelly have done an amazing job bringing their best in Jasam. I love when they add comedy to their scenes, and I missed the playful scenes also. What’s hard for me to grasp is that the old Jason and Sam would never do the things they are doing now to each other, but I’m glad to see so much love in their eyes for each other.… Read more »
Yes lei, I agree with you. There is so much storyline going on in Port Charles right now that the writer’s didn’t have to break up Jason and Sam. I would really like to see these two happy. They have gone through allot, and they wasn’t even happy going on their honeymoon which Sam thought she was rapped or was rapped. It’s about time someone shook up this show and its all too predictable characters. I’ve loved what RC and FV have done so far, and a quad with John/Sam/Jason/Liz would certainly get people talking! I like the idea a lot, and have enjoyed everything so far. Happiness for any significant amount of time on a soap is boring.
Not Boring for the fans who Love Jason and Sam Morgan. Inserting Liz back with Jason because she doens’t have Lucky to fall back on is boring to this fan.
You can make a show interesting without lying, cheatting and breaking up couples. If your a good writer anyway. WHile people had problems with Guza, mostly because of Liason, IMO, because thats when it all really started, but at least he knew how to connect the whole gh cast, and not every couple was broken up, kissing others, etc.. he knew how to put a story together without all that and I probably am the only one that would love to see him come back. Steve and Becky are stellar together and I ultimately want them to be the endgame but I agree with Steve…I would like for the couples to get a few moments of happiness. We’ve had enough whiplash over the last 10 years with couples getting jerked around. The real drama would be allowing Jason to be HAPPY for a little while. How would he reconcile happiness with his dark world? As a Liason fan…I’m hoping TPTB will make the investment with them but either way. ITA Becky has grace and beauty I have never figured out why she is not more main stream s/l’s. Her and Steve have a natural chemistry that shows in every scene they do yet have not been given for 4 yrs. Now there is hope! Maybe even Jake can come back.
who said that just because two characters had sex or a child together they are owed a love story. So many soap characters have slept with so many and even had kids and at some point declared love to eachother but that does not mean they are the story or are owed a story just by virtue of that. Many characters on GH has children with different characters. Jason splits him time with Carly’s kid really well, he could manage to split his time with Jake and his son with Sam so I don’t think that is why Jake was killed off. Liz and jason didn’t have happy times together because that is what they wanted. They wanted to keep Jake out of Jason’s mob life. So stop hating on Sam!

I’m really tired of Jasam, and I think a lot of offline viewers are, hence the ratings being in the toilet (even BEFORE McBain and Liz were inserted into their story). They’ve been played out and are boring. Even Steve recognizes this which is why he’s noted that Jasam weren’t allowed to remain happy for too long. It’s because there is no story there or excitement. Well I am enjoying the show again for the first time in a long time. I Like Jason and Liz together and never thought Jasam should be back together. I think the writing to put them back together and write for them for the many yrs they have been on has really been hard on GH. I hope they decide to move them on and keep the baby as Franco’s for the good of the show.

I am watching GH again for the first time in a long time. I am liking all the story lines and best of all I am liking that there is no Jasam on everyday, now if they would have the characters stop talking about them so much it would be great

As I read Steve’s comments, I felt that he was feeling the samethings that I have felt all along. That the new headwriter, RC, doesn’t really know or give a damn about his character his Jason Morgan. Not a huge fan of JaSAm but have always loved Jason (Sam, not so much). I hate the way Jason is being written. The old Jason would never have turned his back on Sam and the baby no matter whose baby it was. John Mc bain is being written as the hero of all heroes, & I definitely agree it comes at the expense of Jason. At first I didn’t like the integration of OLTLers I thought it could have been done differently but I have come to accept them … to a certain degree. I can’t stand the fact that I see Todd on everyday more than GH characters themselves & of course Jason being the sacrifical lamb for John Mc bain.

and once again going on with the selective recollection. if you want to play the ratings game, first of all their wedding pulled in a 2.0 check your sources again, but regardless, when Jasam 1.0 were together ratings were in the 3.0 and above, all of Liason tenure, not once did they crack 3.0, they hovered around 2.7s on good days so if we want to pin that blame somewhere……..

IA wih Steve. Its a soap & drama is what the writers do. Soap couples don’t stay together forever. This is one couple that I hope is over for good. We’ve suffered them for 3+ years & they are BORING!. They needed Elizabeth & John inserted in their story to add a little spice to the otherwise boring baby switching storyline. I agree with Steve that we are tired of the baby switch, dead baby storyline. He didn’t want his character to get a divorce and go this route but he has a job to do. I really am looking forward to having Jason and Sam see that their son is alive and that he is Jason’s. This will ease both of their minds.

I, for one, have never been able to figure out why all the fuss about Jason. He’s a killer, people. Why would you want him with any woman, screwing up her life, putting her and her children in danger? And what exactly makes Jason “one of the all-time most popular characters on daytime television”?? Wow, you took the words right out of my mouth. Neither the actor or the character is a winner, they both suck hard IMO. He can’t act worth a damn. Wooden as they come with no expression whatsoever. And I really despise Jason, he’s so not worth any woman on this show – let alone two women being interested in him.
Actually I totally respect your opinion. I am one of the fans that is always fighting for Jason to be with Sam but in retrospect, Jason Morgan is a Killer, a Mob Enforcer, and hired gun for Sonny. DAYS and GH Alum Tyler Christopher Arrested for Public Intoxication
Daytime Emmy-winner, Tyler Christopher (ex-Nikolas, GH; ex-Stefan, DAYS) was arrested for public intoxication at the Burbank, California airport, this past Friday, on May 26th.
According to the Burbank PD and reports obtained by TMZ, Tyler was arrested after they found him asleep and on the ground at the American Airlines terminal. The officers noted that Tyler displayed clear and objective signs of drinking. They also reveal he was unable to care of himself.
Christopher, who remains a fan favorite as the former Nikolas Cassadine on GH and Stefan DiMera on DAYS has opened up and discussed his battle with alcoholism in the past. Last year, he appeared on former GH co-star Maurice Benard’s You Tube series, State of Mind.

Tyler was released from police custody following his airport arrest, cited, and will need to appear in court at a later date.
Back in 2019, the popular actor was cited for two counts of misdemeanor public intoxication and landed in jail for two days, following an arrest in Indiana.

This week’s episodes of General Hospital are set to deliver some needed results and some bombshells. First, Victor’s will is read, but, in true GH fashion, the evil Cassadine delivers his reading via a videotaped message of himself in a return appearance by Charles Shaughnessy,
Meanwhile, Trina (Tabyana Ali), Curtis (Donnell Turner) and Portia (Brook Kerr) have all been awaiting the DNA tests results to prove that Trina is the biological daughter of Curtis, not Marcus Taggert (Réal Andrews) .
At the same time, Curtis is moving back in with Portia, after his lip lock with his ex-wife, Jordan (Tanisha Harper).
Spencer (Nicholas Chavez) and Trina are at the center of both storylines, because Uncle Victor probably left something behind for Spencer, while Trina will be dealing with the fallout from the DNA results.
