What Were Your First Impressions of Greg Vaughan as ‘Beyond the Gates’ New Character, Dr. Kial Rollins?

On the Monday, December 8 episode of CBS daytime’s Beyond the Gates, Daytime Emmy-winner, Greg Vaughan made his highly-anticipated debut as Dr. Kial Rollins. The new doctor in town showed up in story as Nicole’s (Daphnee Duplaix) date to attend the annual Winterfest at the Fairmont Crest Country Club.

Vaughan, who is longtime veteran of the soaps, where he previously played Eric Brady on Days of our Lives, Lucky Spencer on General Hospital and Diego Guitterez on The Young and the Restless, now has the opportunity to play a character from scratch, where in his last two soap roles he was the recast.

In scenes, Kial meets up with Nicole (Daphnee Duplaix) at Winterfest. He explains his background to Nicole, that he has two sons, and has been a traveling orthopedic surgeon (does this mean someone is going to get shot in the back?). Ted (Keith D. Robinson) comes by and gets jealous as his former wife is with a handsome doctor.

Wanting to know a bit more about Kial, Nicole asks for more of the 411. He shares he has never broken a bone and then admits he has been extremely lucky. When Kiawants Nicole to reciprocate with some intel, she says she loves horror movies. Kial notices Nicole’s friend, Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli) is in need and encourages her to go over and help her because she is clearly drunk, and he will wait for her.

Later, while Ted and Nicole are talking about his daughter, Eva (Ambry Michelle) and Vanessa pining for Joey (Jon Lindstrom), Kial walks up. He lost the auction for the dinner at Obelisk (Ted outbid him). Kial and Ted recall that they met at an orthopedic conference a few years back. Laura (Destiny Love) hands Ted his dinner for two at Obelisk. Nicole tells Ted to enjoy it, as she was the one who donated the dinner for two.

At that moment, Nicole walks out of Fairmont Crest with Kial. Ted is clearly jealous seeing Nicole enjoying herself with Kial; and he realizes he may have real competition to win back her heart, if another man like Kial is involved.

Now back at Nicole’s house, Kial kisses Nicole on the hand, and clearly gives her all the signs that he is interested in her and says all the right things including calling her “sexy.” Nicole plays it cool, and leaves the door open to see him for a second date, as he makes his exit.

In Michael Fairman TV’s recent interview with Vaughn on his new role on Beyond the Gates, Greg expressed, “I’m really leaning into what this guy is all about and I’m discovering things about myself that I haven’t been able to do. I remind myself: ‘Don’t be Eric. Don’t be Lucky. Just be you.”

Below, you can check out the full video of the conversation with Greg Vaughan now on You Tube’s Michael Fairman Channel.

So, what did you think of Greg as Dr. Kial Rollins on his debut on Beyond the Gates? Do you see a triangle heating up between Ted/Nicole/Kial? Do you think Kial might find another woman in Fairmont Crest of interest if Nicole plays hot and cold with him? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.

He should be shirtless and in tight pants

Great to see Greg playing a character that is happier and more vibrant than the character he played on Days. Greg lit up the screen. Like it was a breath of fresh air for himself and for viewers.

I Love the actor “Greg Vaughan”!!! I watched him when he was on “Days of our Lives” for years & years!!! I Love the character he played & everything about him. He is really a very nice looking young man!!! He will be doing great on “Beyond the Gates”!!! He is very good at what he does!!!❤️

I just hope this new character will be luckier in love and don’t get involved with a maniac again or worse a miss goody two shoes

It was not anything special it’s been done before but I like him better as braby black on days of our lives.

Uhm… he never played Brady Black.

Outstanding. He fit right in with the cast. So happy he’s part of this cast! Hoping he’s upped to contract immediately.

This will actually be his first from scratch character. He was a recast for Diego as well on Y&R. Diego Serrano was the original Diego. But so happy for him!!!

Dr. Rollins is foine!

‘Beyond the Gates’ Mike Manning Talks Smitty’s Emotional Visit with His Mother (Exclusive)

Mike Manning, Smitty

This week on all-new episodes of Beyond the Gates, as Smitty (Mike Manning) continues to be framed and in hot water for the murder of Dr. Lia Whitmore, he gets some familial back-up when his never-before-seen mother, Jenny Smith arrives in Fairmont Crest to see her son.

Jenny is played by Jennifer Van Horn who made her Beyond the Gates debut on the Wednesday, October 21, which was the same day that Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Daytime Drama Series Emmy nominee, Mike Manning participated in a livestream chat on You Tube’s Michael Fairman Channel.

In story, as Smitty was at home, he received a surprise visit from his mother, who resides in Ohio. Jenny came to support her son through this difficult time. Smitty made note of his disappointment that his father didn’t come with her on the trip, sharing that he knows his dad has never been comfortable around wealth or the Duprees.  Smitty also acknowledged how his father didn’t approve of becoming a journalist or moving to the DMV.  Later, when Smitty’s husband, Martin returned (Brandon Claybon) he walked in on Smitty getting a pep talk from Jenny.

SMITTY’S MOM ARRIVES

Manning addressed how he had to keep the appearance of Smitty’s mom on the down low. “I do have a mom now. Yes.! I couldn’t talk about it to anybody.  Jennifer Van Horn who plays my mom was so lovely and so nice, and she was great. I love Smitty having some backstory and having a parent.”

And there could be even more Smitty drama to come! Mike shared, “They mentioned Smitty’s father too, so they kind of plant the seeds for maybe more to come, which is nice. I think it really shows that there’s just one more level to the community that is surrounding Smitty. One of my favorite scenes from this entire storyline is when Smitty gets hauled into jail and the entire Dupree family shows up and they all start taking shots at Jacob (Jibre Hordges) and everyone at the police station.”

BEING EMBRACED BY THE DUPREES

Manning,  in particular, recalled a moment from fellow Daytime Emmy nominee, Tamara Tunie (Anita Dupree). “I loved when Anita goes, and this is not verbatim, but it was something along the lines of, ‘If Smitty’s not home for dinner, you’re gonna be hearing from Anita Dupree.’ Then, Vernon (Clifton Davis) says something, and Kat (Colby Nixon) comes in and she’s giving him so much sass. I remember watching the episode just being so touched that the entire Dupree family is wrapping around Smitty like this shield, this cocoon.  So, it makes this storyline of him being framed a little bit easier to swallow.”

MORE OF SMITTY’S BACKSTORY TO BE REVEALED?

Speaking of the scenes between Smitty and his mom, Manning felt, “It was very touching. He spoke about how he loved his mom for what she sacrificed, It was one of those mother-son things, but it was poignantly done. I would like them to explore that more, and Smitty’s family, because, I think that it’ll also help inform some of the dynamic between Martin and Smitty. We know that Martin comes from a long line of successful people, whether it’s in entertainment or politicians. His grandfather’s a senator. So, we understand that he grew up in the country club, basically. We don’t really understand where Smitty grew up yet.”

The two-time Daytime Emmy winner also explained that he has his own origin story for Bradley “Smitty” Smith: “Obviously, I have an idea in my head with the backstory that I’ve sort of decided for Smitty, whether or not that’s exactly what the writers are going to throw at me,  eventually, who knows? But, I certainly have an idea of why Smitty is the way he is, why he’s so driven, why he takes risks, why he’s so hungry to prove himself and be successful in journalism and everything else.”

You can check out a scene between Smitty and his never-before-seen-mom, Jenny below. Followed by our live chat with Mike Manning after the episode aired.

Now let us know, do you hope Beyond the Gates explores more of Smitty’s backstory? Did you enjoy the debut of Jennifer Van Horn as Smitty’s mom? Share your thoughts via the conversation below. And make sure to catch Mike on the 53rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards streaming next Friday, October 30 to see if he takes home his third gold statuette!

THE 411 ON TIA AND KALISTA

Speaking with TV Insider, about their soapy experience in Fairmont Crest, Tabitha Brown previewed about her host with the most, “Tia is very professional, but she’s a girl’s girl. She is a protector of women and wants to tell their stories in a beautiful way, but she also wants to make sure they’re seen in a very good light.”

However, Burruss previews that Kalista arrives with a score to settle. “She’s spicy,” shared the recording artist. “I always love playing somebody that has come to start trouble. It’s always fun to play a villain of sorts, but Kalista feels like she’s been done wrong and she’s hurt by what she feels has been done to her. So Kalista is stirring up trouble, but she feels justified putting Dani on blast. Kalista is ready for some payback.”

Beyond the Gates is produced by CBS Studios, as part of the CBS Studios/NAACP Venture, in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble. Created by head writer Michele Val Jean, executive producers include Val Jean, Sheila Ducksworth, Julie Carruthers, Tracey Thomson, Leon W. Russell, Derrick Johnson, Anna Saalfeld and Lela Coffey.

Beyond the Gates is broadcast weekdays on CBS (2:00-3:00 PM, ET/1:00-2:00 PM, PT) and is available to stream on Paramount+**.
