Is Y&R About To Recast Katherine Chancellor's son, Tucker McCall?

As Jess Walton noted in the tribute episode to the late Jeanne Cooper on The Young and the Restless, the series will eventually deal with the death of Katherine Chancellor and are deciding how best to craft the story.
Of course, the natural thing would be to develop a story on who inherits the Chancellor fortune, company, mansion, etc, and that would mean bringing back the character of Katherine’s son, Tucker McCall last played by Stephen Nichols.
According to the latest issue of Soap Opera Uncensored, “Insiders report that Tucker is returning to Genoa City long term but he won’t be played by fan fave Stephen Nichols, who returned recently for Jeanne Cooper’s tribute episode. Says a mole, “They’re working on finding someone to play him since Nichols will not be returning.”
So the question is; who do you think should be a “Tucker” recast? Or, would you like somehow for Nichols to return to the role? Weigh-in!
I would love to have Nichols back. I doubt he would return considering he was sorely underused when he was there.
Tucker’s in England having started a new company. Would seem strange to just leave it all behind. I don’t know that Katherine would leave him Chancellor. What about Murphy? I know he can’t run it, but she could leave it to him. I thought they were a bit estraged before he left.
I’m almost certain that it will be Cane in order to cause friction between him and Jill.
UGH!!!!!
Not really a big fan of the character. Not invested. Soooooo many new faces/recasts in G City. But if it means tons of Kay/Jill story, then I’m all for it.
Just for the heck of it…. why not…. 1/2 to Jill and 1/2 to Nikki?
Get Nikki out from under the “Newman” Men… honestly…..
course, i’ve heard it said before… women always cat fighting…. but, this would give Nikki a whole new lease on life.
I don’t know… I was more thinking about what to do with Nikki…
she’s evenmoreso… A Pivotal character… what with… Katherine, Phylllis… and Ashley gone.
I do think Katherine’s death needs to be an umbrella story for all the vets and not only the business aspect but personal. Leaving Nikki some property with millions and Nikki refurbishes the building…it was once where the “The Colonnade” once stood and she reopens the fining dining establishment, Gina is administrator of dining…close the ugly “On the Blvd”!
U are right Nikki is so pivotal for character with all departing. The mansion should be Jill has her half, Katherine leaves her half to Nina & Mac…and the saga continues Jill vs Nina…think about some of the cat fights Jess & Tricia could do now as Jess & Jeanne!
I definately agree about giving Nina more air time… she’s central as well.
Jess and Tricia going at it would lend itself credibility… as they’re known for it.
Nichols would be cool, but they should do a twist to it, and have it turn out Paul Williams is really Catherine’s son, Since Doug Davidson was like a son to Jeanne anyways, and would give him more airtime.
Wow, can’t believe they aren’t planning on asking Nichols back! He is one of the finest actors in Daytime (of all time). Their loss…and ours:(
Ditto…. kind of a slap in the face, if they don’t ask him…. SN may not see it that way… but… he’s TALENT… and they wasted him, like SOOOO MANY others.
Patrick I was under the impression that JFP did not like him that’s the reason his contract was not renewed.
It will be a friend of JFP so take it from there. Or she could always put aging stage makeup on Steve Burton and he could do dual roles! And if you think I am kidding I am not if she thought she could do it she would the nails in the coffin are almost complete.
The nails in the coffin of the once great soap Y&R she has doubled down on what MAB started.
I hope there is re-cast because he was no fan fav on Y&R. I loved the Tucker played by William Russ, he was outgoing, optimistic, romantic, and seemed like a corporate raider. I still smile when I remember Tucker bring Jill breakfast in bed and surprising her with red stilettos and diamond earrings.
The re-cast with SN making Tucker into this brooding spoiled old man who took delight in being nasty to woman he had sex with was a huge turn -off. The rock and roll hippie who had sex with groupies and calling each other by groupie names- just stupid. SN had no chemistry with Jill and was boring with Ashley.
So full of crap. nichols is definately a fan favorite.
Fan favorite yes but not on YR he displayed no real qualities for the character, please recast if we need this character.
Harlee, that’s your opinion. I’ve been watching Y&R for over 35 years and I thought SN was a great addition! I thought his scenes with JC were always stellar. He brought a uniqueness and layers to Tucker. He is the one that made me stop and take notice of Tucker. I can’t speak for everyone, but from what I’m seeing online his portrayal of Tucker was far more popular with Y&R viewers than you think.
Yes this my opinion, I been watching as you a longtime viewer for 40 years and I just didn’t see the layers but again it goes back to this period of the writing and that is what I didn’t enjoy. Jeanne was always stellar regardless and you’re correct. Some scenes were very good wJeanne you didn’t find SN performances as stellar….good at times yes according who he was doing a scene with and other times just horrible. I think it’s a mixed bag there are plenty that would agree with you but there are plenty that would agree that if the character returns to recast.
Once again, it’s all about Jill. Judging an actor on whether or not Jill gets some loving is absurd. The character of Tucker is not defined by Jill. The actors don’t get to write their own storylines. The actor is not defined by Jill and who Jill sleeps with or who she looks good with. As far as SN being popular with Y&R viewers, check the boards. It’s only the same one who runs from one point to the other and complains about how Jill was treated that seems to have the biggest complaints.
I think SN is a great actor, but I didn’t like him as Tucker. I liked the original guy who played Tucker and ticked off that they didn’t keep him.
Fan group polls mean nothing. I love Daniel Goddard, but I don’t think most viewers would consider him the best actor on Y&R. Regardless he wins the weekly best actor contest/poll all the time & has for years. At least his fans are mostly Y&R viewers. The SN/Tucker polls/thread get many of it’s votes/support from Days and/or GH viewers who don’t even watch Y&R, And even then it’s just not that many.
Tucker may not be defined by Jill, but Katherine was (in part) as was Jill defined (in part) by Katherine. They were developed together since day 1 and it continued for almost 40 years. For MOST viewers the mention of either character brings the other to mind. The only thing connecting Tucker to Kay is the stroke of a writer’s pen connecting DNA that can easily be reversed, and often is on soaps. Whereas 40 years of onscreen stories together can’t be taken back. And sadly for SN, MAB did not connect his version of Tucker to the other half of what Jeanne Cooper, and millions of Y&R viewers, considered a super couple so he isn’t of much value now.
What’s more Stephen Nichols Tucker wasn’t onscreen with Kay very often. He spent a majority of his time with YoHarmony, Sophia, Ashley, Gen, Abby, and/or Devon. Most of those are gone now. He was on the program for 3 short years, and they were the poorly rated & viewed, MAB years. Y&R has kept its core vets for 10, 20, 30, and even 40 years, so 3 years is insignificant in comparison. I couldn’t even name all the actors and/or characters that had a 3 year run on Y&R, and I’ll bet most others couldn’t either.

So I agree with you that Tucker is not defined by Jill, but he really wasn’t defined by Kay either, or anyone else left on the show and that’s exactly why it’s easy to re-cast him. No it’s not all about Jill but its even less about Tucker…. alot less.
Liza, I didn’t see any mention of fan polls in the comment you’re responding to, but yes, they do mean something. They show the popularity of the actor in the role. I think Little Kittens was talking about reading actual postings on message boards. Clearly, if you read them you will see that, one, SN was very popular as Tucker, and two, those posters that are posting about him do watch, otherwise they wouldn’t have detailed knowledge of Tucker’s past storyline. Funny, being that SN is currently not on contract with Y&R, GH, or Days (that we know of) you would think that would cause a divide not a unification of fans. Fans of his role on Days would be vying for his return there, fans of GH, there and so on. There might be a handful that would throw their support everywhere, but that wouldn’t be the norm, that’s for sure!
The rest of your post doesn’t make sense in the context of this articles’ purpose, which is to debate whether Tucker should or should not be re-casted. A history of Jill and Katherine and how long Tucker has appered on screen is not needed to answer the question.
I’m not talking about polls. If you actually read the boards before posting, you’d know. No one else defines the character of Tucker solely by his association to Jill or by Katherine. The show is not all about Jill or Katherine. It’s an ensemble. Your reasoning suggests that if Tucker had been on the show for multiple years, he would then be acceptable. Since that is not the case, by your reasoning, a recast wouldn’t be acceptable either. Apparently, you are going to have to find a different way to bash the actor, since that is your motivating factor.
Perfect list and so appropriate of the last 40 years of Katherine’s connections but 80% is “All About Jill”…Jill now is playing the Anne Baxter role which it should be because the use of this long history opens the floodgate of story for Jill alone….sigh…
Bring back her son Brock. He should get the money.
Me! I’d love to be a Tucker recast!
I would love to see Tom Eplin back on daytime– he could play the new Tucker, does anyone know if he is one JFP friends or one of her enemies? But if not him someone who used to be on AW that I haven’t seen in ages would be cool. JFP must of made some friends on that show that she could now import onto this one.
This SL could be good if they have all the Chancellor’s back- Brock, his daughter Mac, Phillip and Chance– with Devon and Tucker thrown in, all competing with Jill for their share of the pie. Of course after Katherine fake death a couple years ago, Esther inherited half the house– so you could get her and Chloe and Kevin in on this too.
Wow! GOOD. idea! Tom Eplin was Amazing on Another World.
That would be something that would start me watching again.
I won’t be happy unless Tucker is played by Nichols. He is a great actor and bringing is anyone else is a bad idea. He even had a physical resemblance to Jeanne Cooper and Devon.I have watched Nichols play Patch on Days and Tucker on Y&R he is such a good actor that I easily accepted him in both roles.
bring tom eplin ex jake another world. he would be really good as tucker. oh robert kelker kelly too. why not. both are very good actors. jill pharren phelps needs to be fired. i cant stand this woman. she is a soap killer. young and the restless will be on life support sooner than later. she always brings her friends teachers pet on the young and the restless and creates roles for her friends. steve burtons new role is boring. cannot even act. a friend also to jill pharren phelps. lol.
If it is going to be an ex AW person it will be Kale Browne/Michael Hudson he was on the set just a few months ago and he is the right age and he is a FOJ! I happen to like KB so I do not care the only problem I have with them bringing the character back is I wished it will be short term and take Devon with you. RKK is definitely to young for the role and he is basically retired and flying now. As for JFP my husband would not permit me to go to the Daytime Emmys this year I had the chance he made me pass he is afraid I would scratch JFP ball headed he is right!
Knowing JFP it will be another cast member of Hollywood Heights like Grayson McCouch or Carlos Ponce. Someone they can get cheaper than Nichols.
My picks would be:
– Grayson McCouch
– Leigh J McCloskey
– Tom Eplin
– Laurence Lau
– Timothy Gibbs
– Gordon Thompson
All good choices
Leigh J McCloskey is already present on YR as Nikki’s doctor which original was seeing Ashley originally years ago….hmmmm we need Brenda back like yesterday if we can’t have Eileen…please YR!
Stefan Cassadine to GH. Stat.
What about Brock? If the original is not available, then a recast. I think Laurance Lau would be a fabulous choice to play Brock. It would be an easy transition since Brock hasn’t been seen regularly. I just can’t see her leaving Chancellor Industries to just recently found Cane or grandson. Her husband has no corporate skills – he can inherit enough money to ensure a comfortable last years of retirement.
NO BROCK RECAST!!!!! FIRE JILL FARREN PHELPS, I loath the Bitch!
I loathe her too. She’s a power-wielding, destructive, ineffective hack who’s now using Jeanne Cooper’s death to soften her own tarnished image and deflect criticism of her total lack of talent and leadership. How she’s lasted sooooo long in this business is a mystery.
rickie i agree with you. jill pharren phelps is a bitch. she needs to get fired now and go away. she only likes her favroites like steve burton and her other teachers pet friends. jill is a soap killer.
No recast on Brock!…the original would probably be delighted to return FT…has major history wJill…much more logical compare to T-u-c-k-e-r…it’s no brain who the audience does know that has a deep connection to YR canvas is Brock…opening the door for Mac to return, making way for Chance to return (recast)…and goes on…Tucker has Devon, this family tree branch is short compared to Brock & Jill’s family tree ihas many branches spreading and deep connections to Katherine….
I wish Stephen Nichols comes back to GH i miss him .
Praying for the return of Stephen Nichols as well to the role of Stefan Cassadine! Laura needs the only man who truly cherished, loved & encouraged her & that was Stefan! Old man Luke & whiny Scott have got to go! Francis & Nichols chemistry is fantastic onscreen,he was the one man that finally tore L&L apart never to be the same again! Stefan & Laura were my favorite couple on GH & again when he played Tucker & she was Genieve on Y&R. It’s time for them to have the real romance they should of had many years ago. I loved Nichols as Tucker as well but the show never used him properly and Stefan has so many more facets for Nichols to portray. GH needs him to return asap!
I was never a fan of character of Tucker played by either actor. I think it was the story on how it was conceived in the beginning. Now, with the death of Katherine looming and you can’t undo all this mess now it seems almost a necessity to have Tucker back for story with Katherine dying. If they can recast Tucker then they can bring back Brock at the same time, Brock has equal shares of CI. Let it be Brock vs Tucker.
My next question is Phillip & Chance are the REAL Chancellor why not have those two back instead of Tucker?
I think Susan Flannery should be figured into this whole thing— there arent too many grand dame’s of daytime left and she could fill these shoes if she has had enough of retirement!
They should bright back the original Tucker……Stephen Nichols
But he’s not the original “Tucker”
Willam Russ was the original.
Brock will never be interested in running his mother’s company.
I think it will fall to Cane – which will ultimately lead to conflict with Lily and Jill….and Tucker.
I do wish he was going to be played by Stephen Nichols again tho.
It will be strange to have a new actor assume an established role and no prior relationship to any of the actors/characters.
Not impossible – but a challenge.
Not if Y&R doesn’t want the type of Tucker that was established. As someone on twitter stated “Who wants a bitter rich septuagenarian with abandonment and commitment and sluttishness issues. NO ONE.”
I hoping the new face also means a new personality, and what better time to become a completely new man than at the death of the bio-mom he obsessed about for ages. If Y&R want to bring back the audience that tunes in for the funeral they are going to want a character they like. SN was only in the role for 3 years, on Y&R that’s a drop in the bucket, so it not a big deal. Besides his Tucker spent most of his screen time (was established with ) YoHarmony, Ashley, Gen, Ashley & Sophia( who are all gone) than Kay. How often was he in the mansion with Kay? 5 times maybe? lol Jill is the MOST established character with Kay, & Tucker hardly knew her. It’s the perfect time to start anew. Now a new Phyllis would be weird.
First off, SN is in his early 60s. Just clarifying that.
Second, I think you’re confusing or rather blurring some lines here. Tucker is a character that is scripted – not a real person – therefore his personality is scripted by the writers. SN’s personality is not Tucker’s and Tucker’s is not SN’s. Whether Tucker has a new face or is played by SN, the writing will be the same. SN has played the role since its inception, except for the first month. He has all of Tucker’s history with Katherine.
“Not if Y&R doesn’t want the type of Tucker that was established. As someone on twitter stated “Who wants a bitter rich septuagenarian with abandonment and commitment and sluttishness issues. NO ONE.”
Uhhh… you said it, under one of your many aliases.
The twitter quote is from @MarkHsoap, a regular #YR tweeter. That’s not me, but obviously you are going to believe what you want so if you want to give me credit fine. LOL
LOLOL… doesn’t matter. Tucker is not being recast, so I guess all this ‘banter’ doesn’t matter. LOLOL…..
P.S. Did you get permission from this Mark guy to repost his info and tweets? I mean, I know Twitter isn’t exactly private, but still. I don’t think I would want anyone helping themselves to my stuff and using it for their agendas. Just a thought.
Stephen Nichols should be asked back! It’s a no-brainer! He has three years of scenes encompassing every emotion with Jeanne Cooper, all which could be used in flashbacks! Seeing a recast play the part of the grieving son will ring hollow with viewers, who will expect to see Nichols. It would be a disservice to the storyline to cast an actor that hadn’t worked with Jeanne!! The only one who could do the part justice is the one who had the most scenes with Jeanne in the role. Stephen and Jeanne worked so well together!! I hope he is asked to come back.
Yes!! That is brilliance Kat!! The flashbacks that would lead to more and hopefully better storylines are right there waiting to carry Y&R into Years of rich, far reaching stories for everyone!!
Bradley Cole ex Guiding Light worked with JFP for a little while on GH, he could be an excellent Tucker.
Another good choice
Stephen was brilliant as Tucker and I loved him during the tribute to Jeanne episode. However, if they chose to recast, I would be welcoming it, but only if the recast was equal to and/or better than Mr. Nichols!
Of course… I would love to see Stephen Nichols on any soap… GH first and then either YR or DOOL. He’s fabuloous!!! Don’t think it will be Y&R though…
I can’t say this surprises me at all. It makes story sense to bring back Kay’s children — both of them. Especially Tucker from a business perspective, and let’s not forget a funeral coming. My thoughts are that JFP and SN don’t adore each other, so one of them very likely doesn’t want tot work with the other, or maybe both. So, either one wants the role to go to SN and one doesn’t, or they both mutually agree that they’re happy not to work with each other. Either way, it’s not surprising to me at all, and it’s really unfortunate, because SN had a ton of charisma in that role, he had huge character chemistry with Jill — and it doesn’ thave to be romantic, I mean CHARACTER chemistry, their interaction was always compelling. But nooooo. I’m just hoping that if SN said no that one of the reasons is because Days came a’calling. Either way, there’s no way this recast won’t be a FOJ.
Stephen, you were a great Tucker. If the character is really being recast, I’ll miss you, and I won’t be watching.
OMG bring him back. Not someone else, PLEASE! If you have to bring someone in could it be George Clooney!
Brock is her son too! If it is not the real Tucker Brock will do. I am sure you can make a story line for Brock. But if Tucker is gong to be a player and the real Tucker is not in the picture you will have to bring in some very handsome, loveable character.
I would prefer Stephen NIchols to any other Tucker but if this is determined to be a recast I would be shocked if it wasn’t Kale Brown.
Grayson McCouch is about 20 years too young. It would be awesome to have Tom Eplin back on soaps, but he is a bit too young as well. I’d suggest Kale Browne or David Forsyth. Both are Phelps faves, but that doesn’t bother me here, since both are good solid actors, and either would have chemistry with Jess Walton and other cast members. I am also waiting for the reveal that Cane is actually Tucker’s son. This was strongly hinted at before Genie Francis and Nichols were axed, so the story couldn’t proceed. But with a recast the story could move full steam ahead. Tucker never really caught on because he was written with no purpose, personality, or point. Any talented 60 ish could play the part well provided they fleshed out the character and gave him some dimensions.
Robert Newman aka Guiding Light’s Josh Lewis.
I’m thinking Kale Brown will get the job. She brought him over to OLTL as Sam Rappaport and made him s HUGE part of that show.
Sorry but I could never watch another friend of Jill
Just as long as it’s not Devon. I can’t stand his punk self.
I like Robert Newman as Tucker or even John Wesley Shipp (ATWT, GL)
I would like them to bring back Stephen Nichols. He’s Tucker and will always be Tucker in my eyes.
Stephen Nichols needs to return in order for the storyline to work. I don’t understand
Why they let him go and put all those kids that have no storyline and that are so
Boring!!!! I’ve watched Y&R for 40 years, we need our vets back on with a new
storyline, it’s gotten where its same storyline just repeated!!!! Wake up and get this
Soap back where it needs to be!!!!! Use our Vets don’t waste them, cause they are
All great!
Stephen Nichols is NOT a Y&R vet. He was on for 3 years- the MAB years- the lowest viewed years in Y&R’s history. Many viewers who come back for Kay’s funeral will have never heard of Tucker.
I think the Y&R veteran actors are perfectly capable of making the story line work.
I second that no SN…his performances were lazy and uninspiring at best….too lackadaisical & no feeling is what I saw and this is why I couldn’t warm up to Tucker…maybe with the right actor & writing~~~possibly…hmmm
the writing was lazy the actor was superb. Now boring one note acting is Steve Burton as Dylan and Goddard as Cane
I just respectfully disagree on SN. Absolutely the writing was lazy and seen many big name stars make sugar out of shiz and turn it to gold we all could name a few…SN doesn’t fall in that category he brought nothing to the role at least on YR. I’m not saying SN couldn’t be good in the right character role but Tucker wasn’t one of them that shined.
Michael Park.
I agree with Gia, Michael Park would be great.. I am sick of JFP and her friends on the soap, also sick of The Chelsea show…sick of seeing her and hearing her laugh, maybe it’s time for me to turn off Y&R..
I love me some Michael Park, but he is not Tucker McCall material at all!
I want Nichols back. He was great. Loved him with ED as Ashley. Fabulous chemistry. I wish they could both return.
Why would they recast? Unless Nichols does not WANT to return (because, let’s face it, who would after being canned?), I see no reason to recast. Nichols is supremely talented and had great chemistry with cast mates (granted, most of whom he played with are no longer there). Also, unless they really intend to use Tucker, I’d rather not have the character on the canvas. Y&R has too many good characters being wasted these days and I wouldn’t like to see Tucker as the next casuality.
Stephen Nichols should Return. JFP however has proven to EXCLUSIVELY HIRE HER FRIENDS. i will not watch if its one of the FRIENDS OF JILL. I ALREADY CANNOT WATCH BURTON
Tom Eplin. And Jensen Buchanan in some way!!!
Count me in as NOT wanting a recast of Tucker McCall!! Stephen Nichols was perfect in the role! I’ve been watching ‘The Young’ for close to forty years and no – I wasn’t a fan of Stephen’s prior to his being on the show. Sure, I had seen soap mag covers of ‘Patch’ and such, but never saw his work. It’s a bit irritating to have to say that as if it it assumed that Tucker as a character could not possibly be well received on its own merit, but yes, he can and is by many I presume. Anyway, the minute Stephen took over the role, I became fascinated with Tucker. I thought he was an interesting departure from your typical business man – mogul – billionaire. My only gripe is that he wasn’t used enough in certain storylines.
So I’ll reiterate here: PLEASE DON’T RECAST TUCKER! GET STEPHEN NICHOLS BACK!
I want kay alden back as a principal writer of this show. Since her and bill bell left , the show became really boring. I do miss jack vs victor , dru vs phylis , nickki vs diane , jill vs kay . Not to mention about super couples she created. She knew how to pull it out.
Bac ( david tom and ashely b, jollen thad and lindsey , raul and brittany etc.) All of them have good chemistry together.
Today most of couples on this show are very boring , i can’t stand one of them.
SN COULD COME TO GH AND PLAY THE ROLE:
STEFAN CASSIDINE
OR KELLY MONACO FATHER
I think they should bring back the latest Tucker McCall. He is very handsome and there was great chemistry between him and Devon
Days Of Our Lives
‘Days of Our Lives’ Eric Martsolf Recalls Moment He Learned He Was Cast as Brady Black, and Last Scenes with Drake Hogestyn (SOAPY Exclusive Preview)
Daytime Emmy winner, Eric Martsolf talks about how he learned he was cast as Brady Black on Days of Our Lives on an all-new episode of Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart dropping Tuesday, June 16. Martsolf, who is the special guest, related how he was out of a job following the end of his run as Passions’ Ethan Crane when the NBC soap was canceled in 2008.
In addition, Eric shares a heartbreaking and memorable conversation with the late Drake Hogestyn (John Black), who at the time was in the throes of chemotherapy following his pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Ahead of the premiere of this heartfelt conversation, Michael Fairman TV is giving you an exclusive preview with two clips from Martsolf’s visit to the CBS podcast.
First, Eric recounted how he and his wife Lisa had recently welcomed twin boys, bought a house, and he did not know if he would find a way quick enough to support the family. Eric had already learned the part he read for at Days of Our Lives, he didn’t get. However, little did he know, that he was about to instead become the recast Brady Black, previously played by Kyle Lowder.

THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
“I had my kids in their double-stroller in Porter Ranch, wondering how I’m going to pay for this house? Marnie Saitta (casting director, Days of Our Lives) calls me up, ‘Eric, can you get your butt to the studio right now?’ I’m like, ‘Why? I didn’t get the job.’ She’s like, ‘Well, maybe you got a job. They want you for Brady Black. They want to bring back this character. He’s been off the canvas for about three years.’ I said, ‘Marnie, Oh, my God! That is such great news. I have my kids, and my wife’s out of town.’ She’s like, ‘Bring your kids. Drop ’em off at my office!’ I dropped the boys off at her office, went and met with Gary Tomlin (former co-executive producer, DAYS), and he said, ‘You’re Brady now. Here’s your backstory. Welcome to the show.'”
Eric continued, “I went back to Marnie’s and I knocked on the door and they’re my kids. One has the Apple remote in his hand or whatever hitting it against the desk, the other one’s playing with the keyboard. Marnie says, ‘Congratulations, get your kids out of my office now.” I was like, ‘I’m so sorry. I love you. Just send me the bill for the damage.’ Eventually, my wife Lisa came home. I said, ‘I’m on DAYS now.’ We cried and we hugged, and I’ve been with DAYS ever since.”
THE HEARTBREAKING MOMENT WITH DRAKE HOGESTYN
The Days of Our Lives family lost one of its most beloved members when Drake Hogestyn who played John Black for 38 years passed away from pancreatic cancer on September 28, 2024. It wasn’t until June of 2025, that DAYS viewers saw the story play out where John succumbed to internal injuries sustained in an explosion saving the experimental serum to bring Bo Brady back to life. It was John’s final mission.
During his visit to Soapy, Eric Martsolf was asked to share one of his greatest memories of working with Drake as his TV son. In an emotional moment, Martsolf recalled trying to tape a scene with Drake when he clearly was feeling the effects of the chemotherapy he was undergoing at the time, while he tried to soldier on as Drake was known to do.

Photo: JPI
“Not to get too sentimental, but I think it was one of the last scenes we did together. We were in the interrogation room at the Salem PD. John is talking to Brady about something and he had to stop tape because he was on chemo and he would have to excuse himself from the set, come back, gather himself, and just go right back into the scene. You could tell he was really struggling. He didn’t talk to me much about what was going on. I heard through the grapevine what was wrong with him. I just looked at him and I went, ‘How you doing?’ We had a five minute break, and he said, ‘I’m just on a journey. It’s going to be good. It’s going to be fine.’ That just broke my heart. He still wanted to keep telling the story even though his body wasn’t letting him. Drake never complained, never bitched.”
Martsolf added, “My memory of Drake is just a man of fortitude, and a man that was a storyteller until the end that just wanted to keep doing his job. He gave Ken Corday (executive producer, Days of Our Lives) his blessing to film John Black’s funeral while he was still on this planet. Ken said to him, ‘Are you sure?’ Drake was like, ‘Tell the story.’ That’s a man. That’s a guy who is dedicated to what he had been doing for the last 40, 50 years.”
Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart features weekly lively and often nostalgic conversations with beloved past and present stars and creatives from across the entire soap opera community and all networks and platforms, including daytime and primetime. Whether a lifelong fan or discovering the genre for the first time, the series shares that it, “offers a fresh, fun behind-the-scenes look at the stories – and storytellers – that define daytime drama.”
Episodes from the audio/video podcast series are available for free via Audacy and the CBS brand You Tube Channel. The podcast is produced by the Paramount Multiplatform Production Group, with Mike Benson serving as executive producer.
Take a look at these exclusive previews below with Eric Martsolf.
Now let us know, were you touched by Eric’s memories of Drake struggling to work as he battled cancer? What did you think of Eric’s casting story of how he became the new Brady Black? Have you enjoyed Eric’s performance over the last 18 years in the role? Weigh-in via the comment section.

‘General Hospital’s’ Controversial Luke and Laura Rape Episode: Writer Sheri Anderson Reveals Behind the Scenes Decisions and Admits ‘I Was Wrong’ to Defend It (Exclusive)
It’s one of the most controversial storylines in soap opera history, when Luke (the late Anthony Geary) raped Laura (Genie Francis) back in an episode that aired in 1979. In the story, one fateful night while believing his latest assignment for the mob would get him killed, Luke drank heavily, and confessed his love to Laura. She had been working at the disco at the time and tried to comfort him.
Luke said, “I’m not going to die without holding you in my arms just one time. Dance with me.” As Herb Alpert’s “Rise,” played in the background, Laura tried to leave as she was getting fearful of Luke. The camera panned away as Luke forced himself on her and Laura screamed, “No!” The aftermath also became a huge problem for the series years later. GH tried to pass it off as a seduction, while viewer outcry, and as the world evolved over the decades called it then and now what it was, “rape.”
The script writer for that episode was prolific soap opera writer and three-time Emmy winner, Sheri Anderson. The popular scribe is best-known for her work on Days of Our Lives and also her tenure as its co-head writer, but she also spent a few years at General Hospital smack dab in the late 70s and early 80s, under then legendary executive producer, Gloria Monty.

During her visit last week to the Michael Fairman Channel, where Anderson opened up about a specific moments throughout her storied writing career, as well as the state of the soaps now in our culture, she recalled the events that transpired before and after that led to her scripting the infamous rape episode on GH.
ABC NETWORK EXEC DECIDES LUKE SHOULD RAPE LAURA
Sheri began, “What happened was Pat Falken Smith (then head writer, GH) came in from a meeting and she was stoned-faced, and we said, ‘What’s going on?’ She said Jackie Smith, who was head of the network, wants Luke to rape Laura and we were like, ‘What? We can’t do that!” She said that’s what we were going to so, because we were exploring ‘date rape’ at the time.”
“So, on General Hospital, or any show that I’ve been involved with, we would get as much research as we could on the subject, especially when I was writing,” explained Anderson. “I would always send the script to a therapist and say, ‘is this accurate? Is this emotionally correct?'”
Anderson shared from the writers viewpoint what the story was about at that time: “Luke was from the wrong side of the tracks. He was trying to prove himself to the mob and they said to prove it, you have to go kill a senator Mitch Williams. Luke couldn’t go through with it, which meant he was a dead man. He went back to the Campus Disco which he owned and Laura was there. She was waiting for her husband (Scotty Baldwin). So, when Laura was trying to comfort Luke, things started to get out of control.”
THE COINED “SEDUCTION”
“The script which I wrote was 110 pages, which was typical at the time. Gloria Monty, who was a brilliant executive producer and director who changed daytime, was the director of that episode,” explained Anderson on the writing for the soap back in the late 70s. “They probably cut 30 pages of material, because she was so intent on the rape and making it as brutal as she could. So, we were just going forward and thinking, ‘Oh, my God! That was really awful.'”
Over decades, the moment was called as aforementioned, “a seduction,” a “date rape,” and then as GH viewers recalled, it was in 1998 that Luke admitted to his son Lucky (Jonathan Jackson) that he actually raped his mother, Laura.

ANDERSON COULD NO LONGER DEFEND THE STORY POINT
It is not lost on Anderson, how GH at the time, tried to pass off the on-screen incident, “In retrospect, and I believe Michelle Val Jean (creator, head-writer, executive producer of Beyond the Gates) once said that it upset her, that we would say it was really a ‘seduction’ and all of those things, because it was not. It was rape, and (back then) I would try to, in a sense, defend it, and frankly, I was wrong,” revealed Sheri.
“I wrote the rape episode and I actually wrote the episode after it and we had Emily McLaughlin who played nurse Jessie Brewer who came to me later and said, ‘thank you.’ Because she said, ‘I wrote the aftermath of it so poignantly for her and Genie,’ recalled Sheri. “Then, we had Irene Kassorla, the real-life therapist come in, and on the show do group therapy sessions. So, it was really fascinating for me I thought that we were doing it extremely well, and I still think we did it extremely well. But, yes, it was rape, and it was wrong.”

GLORIA MONTY SWORE SHE WOULD NEVER MARRY LUKE AND LAURA
In an ironic twist, when Pat Falken Smith and Sheri left General Hospital to return to Days of Our Lives, suddenly Luke and Laura were getting married, after Gloria Monty swore she would never let them tie the knot. As soap fans know, the wedding remains the most-watched episode in soap opera in history with over 30 million people tuning-in on November 16 and 17 of 1981.
“People talk about that story thinking Luke raped Laura, and then they got married. No! Luke raped Laura, but it destroyed their lives with the secrets that they carried. Laura would not tell anybody that Luke was the one who raped her, and their lives were altered in so many ways. It took a long time to bring them back as a couple because they had such chemistry personally, so it was just the obvious way to go,” explained Anderson of the writers mindset at the time. “Gloria Monty said to us, ‘We’ll never marry them.’ Then, when as a writing team we left and went to Days of Our Lives, she married them two months later.”

‘HOLLYWOOD STARLET’ WILL TELL STORY OF POWERFUL WOMEN AND FAMILY STORIES
While at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival, the Bells spoke on their new venture, with Oliver making it clear that what they didn’t like about the current state of most verticals are that they often tells stories which demean women, which harkens back to to China, were the microdrama was born.
Oliver explained, “I was watching ReelShort and a lot of these Chinese dramas, which I thought were very captivating. But then you’d see some parts that were degrading to women. For me, that was a little offensive. I thought we could do an American one where we have powerful women and lovely family stories. I felt like that wasn’t being seen.”

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL IN MONTE CARLO
While viewer should not expect any crossovers at this time with The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, Brad and Olive plan are to have their vertical series capture the spirit of those shows, in turn, swerving some less savory elements in the microdrama genre.
In addition, it was revealed as expected that stars of The Bold and the Beautiful who are making a public appearance at the festival: Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke), Thorsten Kaye (Ridge), Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy), Tanner Novlan (Finn) and Kimberlin Brown (Sheila) are also in town for a remote shoot that will air most likely later this summer on the CBS soap opera.
So, looks like Brad and Oliver Bell have put a fast track on Hollywood Startlet seasons 1 and 2, and another B&B remote is on the way. Intrigued by the microdrama? Looking forward to seeing what befalls Brooke, Ridge, Steffy, Finn and Sheila in story while in Monte Carlo? Weigh-in via the comment section below.
