Jane Elliot To Exit General Hospital!

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

For quite some time now fans of General Hospital have heard the rumblings that Jane Elliot was preparing to walk away from her beloved role as Tracy Quartermaine.

Since bursting on to the GH scene back in 1978 and then leaving and returning, following a string of other memorable primetime and daytime roles, Elliot has left an indelible mark that will never be forgotten in our genre. Now comes word via Daytime Confidential that Jane has informed ABC and the General Hospital executives that she plans on departing the show at the end of her contract this spring.

Right now, Elliot has been in major story with Michael Easton’s Finn and Rebecca Budig’s Hayden, and is always embroiled in the Quartermaine family drama.  With Jane’s departure it would sure seem to signal a major end of an era for the Q Clan.

So, if this holds true and Jane leaves, how do you think Tracy should exit the canvas?  Will you be devastated by her departure? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

I love Jane, she is a wonderful actress. I will miss her on GH.

Would be sad to see her go now that she has just begun to make up for all the
“crazy” years she was written, not as the strong-willed, forceful Tracy that she always had been, but as a weak vessel falling at the feet of “Fluke,” that incomprehensible character!

Great idea, Jenny…..Love Anna Stuart ( Greelee’s mom and Vicki’s–AW).
I don’t want Jane to leave, but if she must, then Anna is a great choice. What would be the reason for Tracy to up and leave? There are already so many loose ends as it is…..a recast would be the way to go.
The irony would kick me in the rear if, Anna, as Tracy, would turn out to be Hayden’s bio mom and not Naomi. Together again?
Now, all we need is for Walt Willy to show up as Dr. Webber, Hayden’s and Lizzie’s father.

You mean Dr. Gina Dante…..as Anna Stuart was once known in the Port Charles sphere. Been there, done that, as far as this actress is concerned!

There are some roles that cannot be recast. Tracy Quartermaine is definitely one.

I agree that Jane is not replaceable. However, the Q’s are on the endangered species list.
Bring in Robin Strasser and/or Erika Slezak as some long lost Q relative.
Then maybe Melissa Archer as someone’s daughter, also a long lost Q relative. Failing that bring back Skye Quartermaine.
Before someone screams that the cast is too bloated, I need to remind them that the Q’s are rapidly disappearing. Let us beef up the Q mansion!

You are so right, Steve. Some characters/roles are too memorable to replace.
But, I echo what Rhonda has said. It makes sense to recast.

Hi Rhonda…Robin and/or Erika would be perfect to pick up the slack. GH really needs to revamp its Q family; Ned should be a constant (always loved him), more Dillon (love him, too), Jason should return to his Q roots and bring in Sam and kids, Michael should be at the house more, Monica needs to be the grand dame of the house now and Skye Quartermaine should have returned for AJ’s funeral!!!! and should return now. Personally, I could do without Melissa Archer. Never took to Natalie… Robin Strasser and Erika? They’d fit right into the canvas. I do… Read more »

I hope Jane will consider returning for short cameos on important occasions. It’s time the Q’s repopulated with the younger generation anyway. They are all there – Tracy’s kids and Alan’s remaining son. As much as they want to get away from it, it’s time Jason, Ned & Dylan do their bit to bolster the family name. Was a poor decision to make the next generation such slackers when it comes to business. My ideas – ELQ needs to buy Crimson, and put Nina & Dylan firmly in the circle of the Crazy Quartermaines. Lila’s little namesake needs to return… Read more »

Well I did mean while she was happy with the character. But to be honest the whole of the ship that was once daytime sunk with the end of world turns/guiding light and abc’s double cancellation. Jane Elliot isn’t on a sinking ship..she’s clinging to a piece of floating drift wood like Days cast. The once tall mighty ship that sailed across three channels of called daytime drama is now lying in a ship graveyard. Oh how morbid I am hee hee.

Canceling so many soaps was the beginning of the end for the genre…and the abrupt cancellation of AMC (which I hadn’t watched in centuries, ahem…and my beloved OLTL was cruel and shocking. Cruel, because it came without warning and ripped a piece of history and continuity out from under viewers who watched for years. But I must say I honestly think GH has been great lately. I remember this phenomenal, uniquely beautiful actress steal every scene she was in back in the 1970s. She came and went from General Hospital but she made the soap opera villain a multi dimensional character. One that we loved to hate and we hated to love.

Eileen, folks get to express their sadness and disappointment that Jane is leaving this role she has been playing for many many years without you admonishing them.

To not distract from Jane during her exit, if it is deemed that Mr. Geary return, let it only be for one episode.

An alternative “happy” ending has Larry Ashton returning for Ned’s wedding to Olivia F. Larry tells Tracy she’s the only woman he’s ever loved and legitimately has come into millions on dollars — her turn to live off him. Regardless, I hope Hugo Napier returns for at least one more scene of bickering.

When Tracy leaves, Who’ll remind Monica that Alan gave her that house (because he was an idiot).

Really sad to hear this, but it wasn’t unexpected. Jane has come and gone many times over the years. I’m actually surprised she stuck around for 14 years on this go around. Loved all the stuff she did with Tony Geary. But other than the storyline where she got sick last year, they really haven’t had a lot for her to do since Tony left. She’s one of the all-time soap icons and will definitely be missed. It’s sad to see how the once mighty and powerful Quartermaines have slowly dwindled down to almost nothing. she will be missed; a wonderful actor – has seen GH through the good and the bad. The character is needed on GH as she is the matriarch of the Quartermane family so a recast (using Robin Strasser, if possible) would be warranted. But her shoes will not be filled, only changed. Love Jane Elliot as a Tracy Quartemaine and she should not be recast! If Jane would like to retire or move on leave Tracy open for Jane to pop in. Surprised she’s hung around this long. The writers at “General Hospital” have never been the least bit interested in re-invigorating the Quartermaine clan. Losing Alan and Edward was devastating, and bringing in Dylan and Ned part-time just didn’t cut it. Jane needs to leave and let the Quartermaines die with her. Another reason to jump ship from this mob-steered Titanic.

Michael (not Fairman)

Michael (not Fairman)

Don’t know if it’s the writers or the brass at ABC who have not been interested in re-invigorating the Quartermaines (given that this lack of interest has continued across numerous writing and producing teams, I would guess it’s ABC), but it’s certainly been a mistake, as has the continuing mob domination (which I also think comes from higher up).

As other people have said, this departure is not a big surprise–but what a loss for the show!

Maybe they’ll put Leslie Charleson back on contract (assuming she’s interested).

Jane Elliot cannot be replaced. There is only one Tracy Quartermaine. While I wish JE all the best in whatever she decides to do, I really wish she wouldn’t go. She and Tracy will be sorely missed. There will be such a huge hole on the canvass. And just as the Q’s were back on screen, what a shame. For those mentioning recast, it’s not an option. You can’t replace an actress who’s played the role (off and on) for almost 40 years! Regardless of who you brought in, viewers would never accept the new actress. Both Anna & Felicia were temporarily recast years ago and the newbies were quickly shuffled off. And as for Robin Strasser, although she didn’t originate the role of Dorian, OLTL recast her for 3 years in the early 90s. Elaine Princi was a fine actress, but never really Dorian. Would Strasser be a good (temporary) addition to GH? – probably, but never as… Read more »

I agree with you Steve. I absolutely remember when OLTL recast Dorian in the 90s. Ms. Princi never caught on with the fans because Robin Strasser so totally inhabits Dorian. Jane Elliot totally inhabits Tracy Quatermaine.

Michael (not Fairman)
Guest
Michael (not Fairman)

And yet Robin Strasser wasn’t even the original Dorian; there were two actresses who played Dorian before her (and the original actress, Nancy Pinkerton, definitely had a strong presence and put her mark on the role). So it’s possible, sometimes, for a recast to capture the viewers’ hearts and imaginations and become the definitive performer in a role, even if the role is strongly identified with another performer.

That said, I agree that Tracy is un-recastable. They should not try it, even with someone of Strasser’s talent. It would be a mistake.

It’s glaring and a huge loss only, because they’ve fired or not put on contract a number of other Classic GH vets so there really is not a lot going on with the core families–how do you bring their kids into the forefront eventually if their parents aren’t around to introduce them and groom them with front burner stories like Days, B&B and Y&R. Once Finola Hughes is gone, I likely won’t tune in ever again. The other Classic vets aren’t given enough to do to warrant it. They should be grooming Maxie, Griffin, Michael, Dillon, Dante, Lulu, Lucas, Valerie,… Read more »

I will never forget the scene in the late 1970’s when Tracy refused to give Edward his heart medication after a supssed heart attack. Riveting!

This is huge–hate to see her go, but please don’t kill the character. I’d go for a good re-cast and/or leave the door open for return guest appearances.

Very sorry to hear she’s leaving. There was no info provided as to why she wants to leave, so we don’t know if there’s a chance she’ll come back. I really started to like her character the past couple of years as she’s showed a more caring side, which for me has made her more likeable. With her leaving, and having been the rock of the Quartermain family for some time, there’s honestly not going to be much left of a strong key family left. Michael’s too young, Ned hasn’t been put in key storylines and Jason is Jason so… Read more »

Jane has always been a treat to watch. As with Kin Shriner’s Scotty, you just enjoy the heck out of their scenes, even when there’s not much to play off of. It’s a real tribute to her ability to make the material entertaining and compelling–great range. I can honestly say that I never fast forwarded through any of her scenes, as her performances (regardless of the material she was asked to deliver) were always worthy. There’s no doubt in my mind that she made those around her better–your “A” game was always required when sharing the screen with Jane. Way… Read more »

This is very upsetting news. Jane Elliot’s Tracy Quatermaine is a very unique and unforgettable character. She is a force to be reckoned with just like Robin Strasser’s Dorian Cramer Lord.

If Jane has decided to retire, I say congratulations on an outstanding career and thank you for giving viewers such tremendous entertainment. I certainly hope TPTB aren’t going to kill Tracy. Hopefully, Jane will be open to dropping by for short visits now and then.

I also feel bad for Leslie Charleson. She must be getting pretty lonely.

Unfortunately, Leslie isn’t on enough to be lonely. They throw her in every few weeks for a few snippets of dialogue.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: “I’m Alexis Davis, and I’m a Fighter, and an Idealist, and an Advocate”; Nancy Lee Grahn Gives Masterful Performance In Special Episode

When you combine superb direction, writing, production, and acting in a special episode of a daytime drama, viewers can see and understand the thought and care that went into it.

This was more than on display during Thursday’s highly-anticipated ‘Alexis-Centric’ episode honoring the 25th anniversary of Alexis’ portrayer, two-time Daytime Emmy winner, Nancy Lee Grahn, on General Hospital.

In the story, symbolism was apparent and used for dramatic impact and it worked beautifully throughout, and best of all, Nancy received a script worthy of her immeasurable talents, and showed us once again why she remains one of the gold standards of our genre.  If you have not seen the episode DO NOT read any further as it contains spoilers.

It begins with an emotional Alexis looking at her mother’s watch which was still frozen from the time of her death.  While playing one of her mother’s records very loudly, she recalls Mikkos Cassadine kissing and dancing with her mom as a young Alexis (Natasha) looked on from the staircase.  When Sam asks her about it, Alexis shares that she sees the watch as sort of a representation for her own life being frozen over the last three years; which has included Alexis’ battle with booze taking over her life and her being disbarred, when being a lawyer was the way she identified herself and what gave her purpose.

Overwhelmed and anxiety-ridden, Alexis hightails it to Kevin’s office for a therapy session knowing she is going to Pentonville in the morning to serve her sentence.  She says she does not know who she is anymore.  Then, Kevin asks her how she spent her day thus far.  She flashes back to lunch with the good men in her life, Finn, Valentin, Jax and Ned.  Valentin tells Alexis she is proud of her for honing up to her mistakes.

Back at the therapy session, Alexis she was an attorney who stood for something and her life has derailed, and that she was a fighter, an idealist, and an advocate.  She knows she has to find a purpose in prison to make it through the three-year term and asks Kevin to help her find one.

Kevin wants to go back to when she was a little girl and her memories that are flooding back to her of Mikkos and her mother.  Just then, the younger version of Alexis is huddled in the corner of Kevin’s office, an image of her from the past.  Alexis tries to come to terms with her father and the choice of dangerous men and relationships that have marred her own happiness  … recalling Julian holding a knife to her throat like Mikkos did to her mother. She says he was one of the toxic men in her life, but Kevin reminds her all of the men in her life were not toxic.

Alexis starts with Ned as one who was good for her saying he was always stable, but she ruined that by recently sleeping with him and putting a wedge in his marriage to her long-time friend, Olivia.

We then flashback to earlier in the day, where Alexis ends up in an almost confrontation with Olivia.  However, Olivia tells her she misses the Alexis Davis she used to be and to get her back.

Now back with Kevin, a guilt-ridden Alexis relays she feels responsible for Neil’s death.  Kevin interjects she is not, nor what happened with Julian.  When Kevin attempts to bring up Mikkos again, Alexis rejects it and is angry that he is making her problem about daddy issues; like so many other women.  She vehemently shouts that the men in her life do not define who she is.

Then, Alexis flashes back to hurtful memories she has buried of a young Natasha witnessing Mikkos calling her mother a “greedy little bitch”.  She recalls it was on Christmas Eve and that Mikkos stopped by to give them gifts. That is when he presented her mother with the watch.  However, things took an ugly turn when he tried to leave, and she threatened to tell Helena all about her and Natasha. Next, Mikkos slapped her and that is when the watch shattered. As all this was going down, a young Natasha watched from the stairs and was horrified that she couldn’t stop her father from beating her mother and remembers how helpless she felt.

However, Alexis reveals to Kevin she thought this would be the last of Mikkos coming by, but he returned on New Year’s Eve and her mother took him back into their lives.  Alexis is beside herself that she could not protect her mother, but Kevin reassures her to remember she was just a child.

It is then we come to the crux of the story.  Alexis looks over in the corner and sees her younger self crying. She goes to her younger self and tells her nothing that happened was her fault, and that their father was damaged and cruel. She tells the young Natasha this shouldn’t have been her burden to carry alone, and that she deserves to be happy. Then in the moment of strength and coming full circle, Alexis introduces herself to the young Natasha, “I’m Alexis Davis, a fighter, an advocate, and an idealist … and I will take care of everything from her on out.”  In that moment, Alexis embraced herself, and forgave herself, so she could move on with her life.

Alexis then flashes back to earlier that night, as the Davis girls gather for a faux graduation ceremony so Alexis could see Molly in her cap and gown and they hug. Back in her session, Kevin remarks that Alexis has repeatedly defined herself as a fighter, an idealist, and an advocate, and reminds her she has three daughters who have those qualities, and that all she needs to be is Alexis Davis.

Then, we get a heart-warming montage of Alexis though the years in honor of Nancy’s 25th anniversary with GH.

As the episode concludes, it is the next morning, and Alexis enters Pentonville and enters her jail cell. There she meets her fellow inmate, who is studying law books to prep for her upcoming parole hearing. Alexis introduces herself as “Alexis Davis” and as someone who can help her.  We then go back to her mother’s watch which now begins ticking at Alexis’ home.  The show fades to black.

Kudos to Daytime Emmy winner, Phideaux Xavier for his outstanding direction, head writers: Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor and script writer, Scott Sickles for the thoughtful episode, EP Frank Valentini and his production crew for putting it all together, and the one and only Nancy Lee Grahn for a performance that will be remembered as a classic.

GH’s Kin Shriner Talks on Franco’s Demise, Scott’s Budding Romance with Obrecht, and His Enduring On-Screen Partnership with Genie Francis

One of the most beloved actors in the history of General Hospital, Kin Shriner, currently finds his alter-ego, Scott Baldwin, in a new budding on-screen romance with none other than Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati).

This comes on the heels of Scott learning the devastating news that his son, Franco Baldwin was shot and killed, thus writing-off the ABC daytime drama series, for now, popular actor, Roger Howarth.

Throughout his now almost 44-year-run on the ABC daytime drama series, Kin Shriner has brought his unique acting chops that helped mold the character of legal eagle Scott Baldwin into the humorous, at times cutthroat, endearing and many times heartbreaking character we have all come to love.’

In a brand new exclusive virtual sit-down interview with Michael Fairman on You Tube’s The Michael Fairman Channel, Shriner opens up about his history with GH and the times he stepped away to take on roles on Texas and As the World Turns, and then back again to the town of Port Charles and GH.

As well, Kin reveals his reaction to learning the news that Roger Howarth would be exiting the show as his TV son and how he shot the key emotional scene where Laura (Genie Francis) tells Scott that Franco had died.  Shriner shares that he does not see how when Howarth returns to the show in as a yet-to-be-revealed character, that it would be a stretch if the two were some how related, but that he will miss working with the talented Howarth as a scene-partner.

As to the women in Scott’s life, Kin addresses each of them from: Lucy (Lynn Herring), Bobbie (Jackie Zeman), Dominque (Shell Danielson), Laura (Francis), Ava (Maura West) – to which the character could never get that close to – and now Liesl (Gati), and working opposite all the powerhouse actresses who portray them.

For fans of General Hospital who have watched the series for decades, Kin also shares memories of working with his late TV parents, Peter Hansen (Lee), Susan Brown (Gail) and his friend and former GH castmate John Reilly (Sean), plus backstage stories with his longtime scene partner, Genie Francis.
