Kristoff St. John On The Return Of Josh Griffith To Y&R: “His Inspiring Leadership, Focusing On The Core Characters, Will Prevail.”
While still remaining number one, but being hardest hit in the latest ratings and falling below the 4 million mark in total viewers, as well as showing a decline from the same time last year of over 500,000 total viewers, it was inevitable that a change was going to come to The Young and the Restless.
After the news that Mal Young has departed Y&R as both the series executive producer and head writer, and reports that Josh Griffith is back in as head writer, and Tony Morina taking on the EP duties, (although not officially confirmed by the show), it looks like major changes our afoot to try to regain the glory of this legacy soap opera.
One of its Daytime Emmy-winning veterans, Kristoff St. John (Neil Winters) took to social media to let his thoughts be known which echo the sentiments of many a Y&R viewer, stating: “Let’s welcome Josh Griffith back to Y&R! His inspiring leadership, focusing on the core characters, will prevail. The character assassination of Paul (Doug Davidson) was brutal. Raise your voice! Bill Bell Sr. created this legendary show. It is our duty to protect his legacy.”
Y&R has been the gold standard in the genre with 30 years as the top rated show, now let’s see how the creatives re-focus the show, as we hope for beloved core characters utilized more, and intriguing storytelling to keep us on the edge of our seats, and some romance to invest in and root for.
With that said, it’s time for you to sound-off in the comment section below. Now that their has been a creative change at the top. what would you like to see be the first order of business be to fix the series? Who should return? What kind of storylines would you like to see play out? Who would you like to see exit via some housecleaning, if necessary?

I said in many, many, many times before…IMO it’s been since 2007 that Y&R has felt and sounded like Y&R…I watched the show faithfully from the middle 70’s till 2007 when Kay Alden and the great music staff was let go…I want Y&R to get back to it’s roots of character driven drama with excitement, mystery and suspense along with great develop love stories…I want the direction, editing, writing and the beautiful classic background music return to the show…Currently the show doesn’t feel, look or sound like Y&R that I was in love with for 30 plus years…There is so much history of Y&R from the past to bring to the show…Doug Davidson needs to be brought back along with great story for the character of Paul…I would love to see Jaime Lyn Bauer come back full time to the show along with Janice Lynde and there is Brooks, Leslie’s son who Lorie took care of.I wouldn’t mind if all the Brooks girls return along with Brenda Dixon as Jill, Snapper and Greg…Like other’s have mentioned, I am so tired of this partner swapping and bed hopping with the same old back and forth, it’s very boring and tiring…IMO Bill Bell, Douglas Marland and Agnes Nixon were great story teller’s…or how I miss the great days of soap story telling…I know a lot of people love Ron Carlivati writing which I respect but I don’t care for his type of writing at all…I know a lot of people don’t really care for the Rosales family but I don’t mind them but I agree they were all brought in to fast and the veteran character’s were overlooked…We do need new character’s but like what most of us have said, not at the expense of our veterans actors/actresses character’s…I am actually happy with the return of Josh Griffith and Tony Morina.
I also am a long-time viewer and totally agree that Y&R has been in a tail spin since 2007 when Kay Alden was canned. I don’t know if I want a “total’ revamp to the past where all of the Brooks and Fosters returned. I think bringing Lori Brooks back is a great idea (the show continues to use the “Genoa City Chronicle,” the newspaper helmed by her father. It would be easy to have Brooks return to Genoa City as the head of a media conglomerate that was started with the Chronicle. Lori returned to Genoa City to focus on saving the Chronicle, which she feels a strong sentimental attachment due to her father and which, like most newspapers today, is struggling).
Personally, I think the BIGGEST issue that needs to be addressed (after the immediate return of Paul Williams) is…… Jill. She is the only original character remaining on the show and needs to be a major character appearing frequently. I like Jess Walton very much and respect her desire to slow down. However, if Walton ultimately is unwilling to commit to appearing more, I’d recast the role. Walton is entitled to semi-retire but, equally, the character of Jill is entitled to more than what she has gotten in the past 5 years. Beyond appearing more, the writers need to clean up the “mess” of Jill’s lineage. It is disgrace what has been done to the character. No long-time viewer would ever believe that Liz Foster was NOT Jill’s biological mother. Serious damage was done to the Jill/Kay relationship by making Jill her daughter and then (inanely) making Neil Fenmore (who was roughly the SAME age as Jill) her father.
Barbara, if I had to pick one person from the past to return it would be Jaime Lyn Bauer as Lorie Brooks and good point regarding Genoa City Chronicle…I agree having all the Foster’s and the Brooks is really asking to much and at this point of years later it really wouldn’t make sense but like I mentioned before of having Brooks back, Leslie’s son since Lorie raised him…Barbara, I totally agree regarding Jill and the disgrace/mess they made of having Jill as Kay’s daughter, I couldn’t watch during the years all that was going on along with Sheila being played by Michelle Stafford, what a disgrace and Bill Bell would be shocked of what happened to the once beautiful show he created…Years ago when I was addicted to The Guiding Light when Douglas Marland was writing the show and once Doug left GL one could tell right away and even though there were some good moments (few and far between) Guiding Light was never the same which is the same when Kay Alden left…Kay worked with Bill since the beginning and she knew exactly what Y&R should be…

Violet, I respect your comment and opinion but Y&R never had that issue…Days of our Lives now and the past few years has that problem with the loud, obnoxious music which is why I cannot stand watching DOOL anymore…along with Ron C’s writing which I don’t care for…The music at DOOL does not even accent the show or story lines at all where Y&R music was beautiful and matched the story lines that was going on at the time…

I think you misunderstood me. I agree with what you said, but I am saying the recent background music on Y&R is very loud and overpowering. The actual vocal recordings fight with what the actors are saying.

I too forget to comment on the music which has, over time, so diminished the essential feeling and sensitivity of Young and the Restless. Thank you to whomever it is that consistently reminds us how important that was.

No way, we’ve heard that before many times.
It is the YOUNG and the Restless, and Young people have been owning the screen, they have been brought in for a reason, they are Young.
It’s not always what the writers want it’s what is wanted above them the sponsors for just one.
They will stay with all the new young brought in and young family members that will, without doubt, be on our screens.
I’m OK with that.
Sponsors are targeting various demographics, the young, they need a higher demo of the younger it’s about the ad-age
Younger on screen=younger adaunce=desired ad-age.
The sponsors are about the Key Demographic, and without sponsors, there is no soap.
So- yes. The Young will be upfront, the new younger characters were brought in for that purpose.
The vets will be played but more-so as props for the younger their stories.
times change the torch is passed, but the vets will linger.
Victor and Nikki will always be the vet front-runners.

What I would like to see now that we know Sheila is alive is for Lauren to fund out that her arch nemesis is still around (Dumb-dumb Eric Forrester never thought to call Lauren to tell her she didn’t shoot the woman she thought was Sheila) even though the woman who plays her; Kimberlin Brown had tried to run for a political seat (she did lose). Maybe if we could get Kimberlin to come back, we could see this story played out as well as see sheila make trouble on B&B too.
PLEASE Do Away with the Tessa & Mariah Story line . Tessa can go along with Mia . Don’t like neither . Bring Paul back so him & Rey can work together. I’d love to see Sheila back on Y&R! Lauren needs her old rival back. Those two played so well off of each other.
This being Christmas Eve, my Christmas wish list would be the following
1. Bring back Paul, and his daughter Heather– and a sane but still slightly off Patty
2. Bring back the character Adam– not the sweet JH version, not the evil to the core version, but the one who had a back bone, who could go toe to toe with Victor– reunite Adam with Sharon
3. Get the real Phyllis and Billy back from GH
4. Bring back Gloria and give Michael and Lauren a real story line
5. Recast Jill
6. Bring back the Chancellors in some form
7. Keep the sets the way they were–now it looks like everyone is acting in a closet, and all the shots are so close up, it is annoying.
8. The following characters need to go Tessa, Nate, Abby’s boyfriend, Mia- but Rey and his sister Lola can stay. Cane has outlived his usefulness
9. If Devon must stay, then at least put him on the back burner for a while or have Tucker come back to claim his share of Chancellor estate– it never made sense Devon to get everything.
10. Have characters act their age– don’t pair Jack with women who could be his daughters– surely there are many beautiful mature women who can fit the bill
11, Never have Nikki go off the wagon or leave Victor again
12. If none any of the above is possible, promise never hire MAB, JFP, Chris Pratt or Mal Young again.
Mary, this is a great wish list. One exception: I would like Jill on more but only with Jess W. Cane has been written into a corner but DG is so beautiful I still enjoy watching him — just give him a decent, non-Lily centric story. Billy isn’t the same without Billy Miller’s ingenious mix of heart and impishness, and ENOUGH Devon! How many big stories does he need to smirk his way through? And Mia? She needs to go the way of the Dodo bird. Ditto Jack’s new, charmless ice queen. I’d rather have Patty Williams!
Soaphound, I also love Jess Walton but I think Mary suggests the character should be recast because the actress has indicated she wants to go into semi retirement.
If it was a truly great story for Jess Walton, she would stay. I’ve said it repeatedly: write the character of Jill Foster into a new Katherine Chancellor and let history repeat itself. Put Jill in the Chancellor estate and have history do to her what Jill did to Kay back in the 70s– steal her husband, become a tired old drunk and catfight with some new twenty-something till this new Jill/Kay kills off her husband and the fighting continues… how splendid it would be for a new generation of viewers to taste the skillful storytelling arcs of Bill Bell and Kay Alden. And, as several others have noted in other posts: BRING BACK THE LEGACY BACKGROUND MUSIC to this show!

I am so happy CBS finally woke up!! Mal totally disregarded the history and the core of this show. The new actors are talented, but have no purpose on this soap! LOVE Lola, but the rest of the Morales family should go on back to Miami! Doug Davison was treated shamefully!! His character was made to look weak and useless. I would like to see he, Ashley, Victor, Neil, Lily and even Hilary come back.

What happened to Paul, to Kevin, to Chloe, to Hillary, to Chelsea, to Adam, to Victor? How can you change and rewrite history? It is a betrayal of the long time fans.

Why did they get rid of so many of my favs, Neil, Lily, Victor, Paul. Bring’em back. Please. BTW. I’ve been watching since about 1978.
The same thing has been said about every writing regime change this show has seen in the last several years. Mal started out by writing for the core characters, but has since divulged into the creative mess that Y&R is currently in. This is the inherent problem with having one person be in total creative control of a show as both head writer and EP. Remember how terrible the Lynn Marie Latham and Maria Arena Bell days were?
My hope is that characters like Paul, Neil, Michael, Lauren and Jill are featured more prominently, that Adam, Chelsea and Noah can return, and that several of the newbies like Tessa, Nate, Mia and Kerry are written out. The rest of the Rosales clan has grown on me, and it’s nice to have another core family.
But on the topic of core families, the Chancellors have been decimated. Bring back Tucker and Brock, Katherine’s only children, and have them fight for control of the company and Chancellor legacy with Jill and Cane. And keep Mackenzie around too, without J.T. tying her down I’m sure they can come up with a compelling story for her.
Wait a second?! We, the fans have been very vocal ALL OVER THE PLACE! I’m sorry, it’s mostly.the writers of the blogs, Like this one that didn’t scream as loud as we were! From puff pieces with Mal to no true constant uproar from any in the media about the writing or characters being let go OR EVEN calling people out for just being bad!

I don’t think the character of Kerry needs to go but she needs to be recast. The actress is about 38 years younger than Peter Bergman and you can tell he feels uncomfortable in their romantic scenes. Bergman deserves better. Plus, the actress is not very good–she’s about as exciting as a tree trunk. Also, the scenes with the two new characters, Rey and Mia are horrifically dull. We don’t know these two characters and their history transpired off camera. The actor who plays Rey is fine but the actress who plays Mia is just atrocious. She cannot act her way out of a make up brush and she has a way of holding her little arms and hands like Tyrannosaurus Rex as she roars around trying to social climb.
Mal Young ‘s results were a total waste of talent. , the real villain is of course SONY which owns Y&R, money ruins everything and everyone….Y&R is trying to hard to conform to PC. the onslaught of the new family of Morales is /has been a disaster, we go from Nikki’s boy-toy, to construction magnate, just throw in his brother , who happens to be a cop, how did he get the job?? Did Paul W. go on vacation???we were never told?? The fanfare for Neil Wintersreturnand sudden disappearance, this is another disaster, Lily ‘s absence, well prison , this is unbelievable garbage, thank you Mal Young. The show USA disaster, Phyllis as the CEO of Jabot??? The canvas is littered with people with nothing to do, and bringing in new people who are boring, Nate- over the top, get rid of him!!!!!!, the unforgettable head chemist at Jabot, Jacks new love interest????She i has nothing to say worth rembering, the writers have hinted at a past, but I have no clue, losing interest in her character fast…Solve the JT drama already!!!!!! We all know he didn’t die or died from the heart related problem he was hiding from everyone. The only thing that makes me happy is Jess Walton appearance as Jill…Since the passing of Jeanne Cooper, Katherine Chancellor, the show will never, never have the magic it had, because she was the show , from the beginning, people, it was built around her , I watched the first episode, I know.. the failed attempts at family history by the writers, associations to keep people connected , her sons, both gone written off the canvas, her grandson , granddaughter, her spouse , affair, Jill , her son , his son , his death , connections, are /were important but , now unforgettable. I only watch live when the promos says that someone or something is going to be revealed. Good luck this year, I can’t imagine it getting worse….. at the same time it’s number One ,1, for 30 years in Daytime …. fix it fast !!!!!

One thing that I’ve always wanted to see is someone with a physical disability. Show the struggles and triumphs. The only character I can ever think of is Hope Adams Newman. This would affect a large audience that has never been considered. Maybe even draw in a new audience.
Lea, way back in the day (I think it was the early to mid 80s) John Abbott had a secretary with a physical disability. She walked with a cane and a limp. She had a huge crush on Jack and I think he kind of broke her heart.

@Harry and Kevin C….The Y&R character to whom you were actually referring was Carol Robbins (Evans)…and she was played by real-life polio survivor, the late Christopher Templeton. Sadly, this lovely actress passed away in 2011, but I still fondly remember her and that unrequited torch she carried for Jack Abbott (then the unforgettable and incomparable Terry Lester!) Quite frankly, I’m glad I have such wonderful memories of this soap, because its obvious from reading the comments here that the show has now gone the same way as GH….downhill and fast!!
Shay, thank you. Carol! Now I remember. Terry Lester was fabulous as “Ole Smiling Jack.” I did not know the actress passed away. Yes, Y&R seems to have thrown out its soul and its character. Let’s hope the aforementioned is in the recycling bin.

That’s a true indication of how fine these programs once were…as they left an indelible impression! I somehow think such will not be the case in reference to the current crop of shows and their truly indispensable players….here today, gone tomorrow and out of sight, out of mind! In terms of Terry Lester’s bad boy roue’ version of Jack. it will always be the one for me….he was simply magnificent in that role! Oh, you are very welcome, Kevin! I think the fact that I haven’t watched either B&B or Y&R in years makes my recollections of their past much more clear…no recent messes to clutter up my mind! Lol. Needless to add, both soaps were superb in their heydays, and as I mentioned to Harry, the fact that so many of the characters and storylines remain indelibly etched in my memory just goes to show how fantastic they really were! In terms of Christopher Templeton, I forget to add that she had the most beautiful, expressive eyes…they spoke volumes without saying a word, and that was especially obvious when Carol longingly gazed at the clueless Jack….it was quite simply heartbreaking!

I remember when Sharon, with Adam’s help, escaped from jail, and she took off, landing up with that Vet. When she was brought back, Doris, her mom, whom she was always so close to, came to see her, and saying terrible things to and about her daughter doing such bad things, etc.

Bring back Paul, Adam, Ashley, Hillary, JT, etc. Fix all this mess soon! The storylines are awful. The parts of Rey and Arturo along with Mia need to go. Lola is ok. Leave Summer far away. Abby is awful. Do not allow her to laugh one more time. Cane can go.
Bring back the regulars that have been fired and/or chose to leave because of bad writing and leadership. Get rid of that Rosales family, at least the men. Lola is ok.

Very happy that Mal Young isnt with Young and the Restless he did a bad job with the storylines. I would like to see all the actors that left come back like Doug Davidson and the actresses that played Ashley Abbott and Hilary. These actors were incrediable and make the show exciting. I am a big fan for over 40 years.
Ps. The JT storyline needs to end soon it has been ongoing for two long.
I agree with the JT story. It’s ridiculous. I think he woke up in that hole and dug his way out. That’s the only explanation for his body not being there. They need to end it now. Get on with it.
I also agree re: Hunter King as I read on someone’s comment. She has never added anything to the show and she’s a bad actress. I can’t stand Rey Rosales’ voice, Mia is just very unattractive and Arturo does not add anything to the show. Those 3 need to go

Jacob Martinez is ‘Days of Our Lives’ New Javi Hernandez Replacing Al Calderon in the Role
Finally! The casting has been revealed as to just who would be Al Calderon’s successor in the role of Days of our Lives, Javi Hernandez. On Friday, April 30, the long-running soap opera revealed Jacob Martinez is taking on the part and he will first be seen this coming June 30th and then on all-new episodes streaming on Peacock.
As previously reported, the popular Calderon exited the soap opera last year to join the cast of the NBC primetime medical drama, Brilliant Minds as nurse Nico Silva, who in May will air the remainder of their second season. The series has been on the bubble for renewal by the network. His last episodes as Javi will also air this May on DAYS.
Since DAYS tapes ten months ahead of streaming, Martinez has been secretly ensconced in all the drama in Salem for quite some time. When viewers see the new Javi in story, we should learn what will happen in Javi’s relationship with Leo Stark played by Emmy winner, Greg Rikaart, plus his continued relationship with his relatives in the Hernandez clan. Currently, when Javi returned to Salem after taking care of his ailing father, and after the bust-up of his marriage to Leo thanks to Dimitri (Peter Porte), he claimed he had moved on with someone else while he was away from Salem.

Like Calderon before him, Martinez is a multi-talented actor and singer. Jacob’s resume is impressive having appeared in the musical In Pieces: The Musical at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater and he was hand-picked by Joey Contreras to play the role of Grey. Other credits include: the short film, Memory Swim and the play Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage.
Martinez hails from Norfolk, Nebraska and appeared when he was very young at the Johnny Carson Theatre, and as DAYS fans know, Jacob is now working at the Days of our Lives studios, right where the “Tonight Show” is filled. In addition, Jacob Martinez is a graduate of The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA).
Taking to his Instagram on Thursday, April 30 once the news of his casting was revealed, Martinez, expressed, “Way too many people to thank in one post, so I’ll just say THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART to each and every person who continues to pour into me and encourage me to chase my dreams. I cannot even begin to express how grateful I am. I already feel beyond blessed, supported, and loved. See you all in Salem ⏳”

This week starts with heartbreaking news. Patrick Muldoon, best known for his roles as the original Austin Reed on Days of Our Lives and later as Richard Hart on Melrose Place, died on Sunday, April 19, at the age of 57. Reports indicate his death was sudden following a heart attack.
Muldoon’s sister, Shana Muldoon-Zappa, told TMZ on Monday more details on her brother’s death, “Patrick went to take a shower Sunday morning after drinking coffee with his girlfriend in their Beverly Hills home. His girlfriend decided to check on him after he was taking too long and found him unconscious on the bathroom floor?” Shana added that paramedics rushed over and tried to revive Patrick, but there was nothing anyone could do.
Soap fans first saw Muldoon as Kate’s (Lauren Koslow) son on DAYS back in 1992, where he quickly became a fan favorite during the on-screen love story between Austin and Carrie Brady (Christie Clarke). Patrick left the series in 1995. He later made comeback for appearances in 2011 and 2012.

On Melrose Place, he played bad buy Richard Hart from 1995-1996. Patrick launched his acting career while in college landing the role of Matt in the 1990 sitcom Who’s The Boss? alongside the likes of Judith Light (ex-Karen, OLTL) and Tony Danza. Following his graduation, Patrick nabbed a recurring role as Jeffrey Hunter in Saved By The Bell by 1991.
Throughout his decades long career, Muldoon also starred in several motion and TV series including his leading roile in Starship Troopers (1997). He also had parts in Deadlock (2021), Vanquish (2021), Dakota (2022), Marlowe (2022), and Murder At Hollow Creek (2023).

Not only was Patrick an actors, but a producer and a musician and singer. He often made appearances and put out music with his band, The Sleeping Masses. Muldoon was the band’s lead singer and guitar player. Patrick was also a producer of TV and film projects.
At the time of his death, Patrick was also an executive producer on a the movie “Kockroach,” which is currently in production.
Taking to his Instagram, just a few days before his death, Muldoon expressed,“So excited to be a part of this amazing project KOCKROACH directed by Matt Ross starring Chris Hemsworth, Taron Edgerton, Zazzie Beetz And Alec Baldwin. Filming now in Australia,” he captioned his post.
Sadly, on April 24, Muldoon can be seen in his 2025 film Dirty Hands also festuring Denise Richards (ex-B&B, RHOBH), which will be released on digital streaming platforms on VOD.
Muldoon is survived by his partner, Miriam Rothbart; parents, Deanna and Patrick Muldoon Sr.; his sister and brother-in-law, Shana and Ahmet Zappa; and their children, Muldoon’s beloved niece Halo and nephew Arrow Zappa.

All My Children and Hallmark alum, Jonathan Bennett has been cast in the newly-created role on General Hospital as Joe Fitzpatrick.
Look for Bennett to make his debut on the ABC soap opera next month in May. Bennett is very familiar to daytime fans for his work as JR Chandler on All My Children from 2000-2001. Later, he landed the part of Aaron Samuels in the motion picture, Mean Girls in 2004 starring Lindsay Lohan, which would become his breakout role.
Jonathan would go on to star in seven Hallmark Channel movies and then hosting and producing the network’s reality competition show Finding Mr. Christmas, Bennett has also appeared as a contestant on Season 19 of Dancing with the Stars, plus Celebrity Big Brother in 2019, and he starred on Broadway in Spamalot.

After the news broke, Bennett took to his Instagram and shared, “There’s a new guy in town…” Meanwhile, the official General Hospital account shared a pic and expressed, “He’s already tired of us telling him his hair looks sexy pushed back. Welcome to the family, Jonathan Bennett.
Bennett is married to Jaymes Vaughan. Back in 2022, they became the first gay couple to appear on the cover of the wedding magazine, The Knot.
