‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).
Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.
Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON
Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”
Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).
Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.
“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?
During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.
Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.
You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.
Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

They SORAS’ed this character to the point that her being this age (must be 16 – the character has her own car!!) negates everything that has happened to this point!!
Now they need to get rid of that talentless Blake Hood – perhaps bring back a younger Kyle, one that didn’t age 12 years in less than 7 months!!
Stop SORAS’ing these kids, PLEASE!!!
Kyle was supposed to Be Abby’s age when Diane and Kyle came back. (they were born around the same time during the sperm switch). But Kyle was aged too much too soon when they did it right.
Well I didn’t like her I don’t like Kyle when I thought I would like them both. It didn’t bother me they were SORA’S they just were written very annoying. Now talk about annoying!!! OMG !!! M.C.E who play’s Chelsea is either the worst actress I have ever scene or she is really written bad!!!
I am glad she’s leaving she isn’t a very good actress for y&r not experienced enough
Here’s a question… if a young character can be SORAS’d… can same aging same young character be reversed, even a few years?
Hmmmmm…
Yes they can, they made AMC’s Bianca younger for her anorexia story and then aged her a year later for Eden Reigal’s Coming out story.
B&B did it with Pheobe and Steffy, they aged to almost 18 and then de- SORA’d them back to younger children.
Well I guess the rumors are true JFP is going to go for the younger crowd, the only problem is Joshua Morrow is only 38 the guy who plays Nick and he looks so young I would have preferred her to leave this alone boarding school. Next will see Faith how old?
Thank God she is gone, she looks older than Cassie did when she died. We got to watch Cassie grow up and they could have done it again with Summer.
I like Lindsay Bushman as Summer but she needs to be a whole lot young to play the role of Summer Newman as Nick & Phyllis daughter and she needs to get in a lot of trouble and make Nick & Phyllis worry a about their daughter and see them worry a about her see them yell at her like Nick & Sharon did with Noah. I can’t wait to see the new Summer being her parents together take care of her when she get hurt.
She and Fen were both aged too soon.
Yes I agree
Me too.
Exactly, aging children is a risk and in the case of both of Fen and Summer it was too soon and too much. Other times, like when Victoria or Billy were at boarding school for a couple of years, when they came back in their late teens, it was more plausible because they were not on the canvas for a while. But when one day Super girl is six years old playing with Faith and then comes home from a sleep over a week later looking like she is in her twenties it is too unbelievable. If they must do this, do it with some intelligence please.
And I never thought the new Fen made sense, hiding away from Daisy. Teen boys at that age are usually pretty much afraid of nothing and you would think he would try and protect his family or something. The SORASed one, though he has not had much airtime, does not leave much to be desired and seems like something is not right with him mentally because of the way he is played. I can only imagine what Maria had planned for him.
Fen will be next to go… Just not feeling him…
Thank Goodness! Now please take Fen & Kyle with you. Don’t mean to sound so mean, but a few more acting classes would do you all a world of good. Best of luck.
The SORAS of Summer went from bad to worse when she started pulling a Cassie. I feel bad for the actress, though! Hopefully nuSummer will turn out better!
Can they get rid of Summer all together? Who cares about her? She was just a device used by the writers to break up Nick/Sharon years ago.
I say they need to tell us whether she really is Nick’s daughter. Back when the paternity results came in, Nick was the ONLY one to see them. Many of us still believe that Jack is her father and they could still do that.
OOOH, I forgot about that. That would be delicious! Otherwise, please ship her off to boarding school and never speak of her again.
okay what does SORAs’ed mean..???
Are you kidding me? You have never heard this before or decided to look it up yourself? 🙂
Here you go:
S-oap
O-pera
R-apid
A-ging
S-yndrome
According to wikipedia: The practice of accelerating the age of a television character (usually a child or teenager) in conflict with the timeline of a series and/or the real-world progression of time.
No need to be snappish…maybe tolecrazy just started watching soaps.
I am sorry, SZima, that you took my response as “snappish.” I included the smiley face 🙂 . I was not being snappish or snarky or any of those things. I was trying to have fun with tolecrazy.
I really love this website and the fact that the majority of the time people get along. I am sorry if anyone was offended as it was not my intent. 🙂
They should just give the role back to Samantha Bailey. There was no need to recast (and SORAS) the role of Summer in the first place.
Agreed!
The girl had some talent. I was still getting used to the idea of Summer no longer being Nick’s little “super girl.”
I think they should DESORAS Summer and bring the little girl back, then they need to fire the actor playing Fen. DESORAS and recast Fen too. Why do they have to age them to have a story? On Mad Men Betty and Don Draper’s daughter Sally had some storylines with younger kids her age. Why do they always have to make them teens overnight? I don’t see how it brings additional ratings, I just don’t.
I agree that they should de-SORAS Summer and Fen. It was a shock to the system to see them going from little kids who need babysitters one week, to kids driving cars and buying/using vodka the next.
I think they believe teenage storylines will bring in teenagers to watch the show and hence ratings will go up in the demo group. Also since it is easier to SORAS’s an existing character than think up of a new character and fit them into the canvas SORAS’ing has become predictible, like Christmas or the changing of the leaves. You know it is summer time and school’s out when on your favourite soap a child ages 10 years right before your eyes.
I know what everyone means, especially what you said, Mary SF.
I remember back in the 80s/early 90s when I was a teenager I might get bored with whatever soap I was watching to go check out another or when one was not on because of sports. I often did this in the summer when I was home more because I grew up on the soaps.
However, today’s teens do not seem interested in soap operas (unless I am missing something). They seem preoccupied with all the media that is available to them and other shows. I still believe it is the over 30 fans that have watched forever and continue to do so. SORASing is just weird. Sometimes it works with the right character, but to do that to everyone isn’t right.
It is difficult to invest in suddenly grown characters without the experiences of watching them grow up. Robin Scorpio on GH grew up before our eyes and so, her stories as an adult have more resonance and meaning. Same for those who did have some SORAS, such as Biana Montgomery on AMC. Or Lucky and Lulu on GH. Without this patient nutruting of children characters, why should we care for them as teens or adults onthe canvas? They seem to be only new characters in the way.
Not surprised. She isnt a mature actress.
JFP strikes again. That woman is a complete witch.
Supposedly an actress from Hollywood Heights has been cast as Summer. Boy, it helps to have friends in high places. I didn’t think Lindsay was doing a bad job. Not her fault MAB chose to overage Summer.
I feel badly for Lindsay-she got caught in the middle of Y&R’s current confusion. I sincerely hope this soap gets back on course quickly. As viewers we invest ourselves in the characters and in the blink of an eye, they are gone. Please Y&R gives us back what we love-characters we care about in story lines that are riveting.
I have tried to like the new Summer but she will never replace you, Lindsay Bushman in my heart! I found you to be an amazing actress and you did an excellent job! The new Summer is a snob online and not too great on the show, I hope to one day be able to watch your acting skills shine again, Lindsay Bushman!! Good luck with your future!!
Not pleased with Bushmans dismissal i think she is a faboulous actress
Summer – could be Sharon’s real-life daughter in my opinion. And yes, I, from the beginning, felt she was biologically Jack’s.
Fen – his behavior is actually a combo of young Kevin & Michael, and Lauren was no Angel, so again, my opinion is that Fen is being played well.
Harmony – should have kept her.
Chelsea – I like her in her role.
Dru – should bring her back.
Phyllis, Victor – should finally get a visit from KARMA.
Jack – it appears he’s being visited by KARMA currently.
Catherine – needs to stop being so goody-goody, especially where Tucker is concerned.
Adam – I don’t condone what he did in his “dark” moments, but I totally get that he’d be ruthless after the way the Golden Children treated him upon his arrival to GC.
Nick & Avery – are great together …. it’s about time.
Summer – could be Sharon’s real-life daughter in my opinion. And yes, I, from the beginning, felt she was biologically Jack’s.
