Maura West Pens Touching Farewell to Exited GH Co-Star Roger Howarth, Shares “Grateful For This Man”

On Monday, it was confirmed that Roger Howarth has been killed-off General Hospital as Dr. Austin Gatlin-Holt, a role he has played since 2021. Howarth, previously played Todd Manning and Franco Baldwin as well on the ABC daytime drama series over a span of 11 years.

Howarth’s longtime friend and most recent love interest on GH, three-time Daytime Emmy-winning star, Maura West (Ava Jerome), took to her social media account on X to share some final words on working with Howarth during his run on General Hospital.

Posting a GIF of a moment from a scene of them together from GH, West penned: “Grateful for this man.  Expert actor. So funny, smart as hell. Gentle. Creative and collaborative… supportive. Life giving. What’s better?” #frava #jolt

Now, with word of Howarth’s departure, if you take a look at his official Instagram, Roger actually had paid tribute to West in a post in October, most likely following his departure from the series.

Roger said of Maura: “Beautiful brave talent. Thank you, Maura.”  Maura replied to his post, simply adding, “Love you, Roger!”

As soap fans know, GH was not the first daytime drama that Howarth and West worked together on. Previously, they appeared on the beloved As the World Turns as Paul Ryan and Carly Tenney Snyder.

Will you miss Maura and Roger together on General Hospital? What did you think of Maura’s touching tribute to her now former co-star? Comment below.

Two of the finest actors on daytime. Their chemistry onscreen is amazing. They made scenes work even though the Austin character was badly written. That is true talent, in my books. I will really miss seeing them together!

Loved Maura and Roger together

This is where the powers-that-be can take the ball back into their court and morph Roger back into Todd Manning and pair him with Ava.

I would be very interested in seeing how that played out!

I would love that—I loved Roger as Todd and Franco—but Austin did not do the actor any justice.

They were the only reason I watched. They took away half of the best pair of actors daytime has seen in ages. I hope she follows him out because GH won’t last much longer.

Still do not understand how they can let him go

Probably freeing up money for Burtons return next year. I bet Mathinson out next.

If that’s the case then that’s GOOD. On both counts.

I don’t see him coming back.

Ugh. Bringing that lump of stone back again…..just NO

It’s too bad that Jolt’s story was never given a chance. I think they would have been fun to watch.

GH really dropped the ball with Roger, who was always riveting to watch.

I don’t understand why GH would kill off Austin and leave someone like Cyrus. They could have explored the relationship with Ava they had such great chemistry!

What is General Hospital even thinking??? You do away with such a talented actor, yet you keep characters who are of no interest! Whoever made the decision should be the one who was let go.

You are right! I could name a long list.

There are tons of streaming services now Paramount Plus for one which is CBS. Reboot As the World Turns and Guiding Light film them in New York and bring some of these actors back

P&G won’t let that happen. EVER.

Any bets on who killed Roger/Austin? I’d like to think it was Sirus, but somehow don’t think so.

Cyrus himself was meeting with his “sister” Laura at the time, so he’s got a solid alibi. But of course somebody like Cyrus rarely gets his own hands dirty. Mason is in Pentonville & still recovering from bullet wounds, so it probably wasn’t him either.

Might have been Nikolas, since he had lived in that house for a while himself, but it seems unlikely that he would have a motive to kill Austin, who arguably saved his life, after Ava bashed his head in.

Ava might have been angry enough with Austin to do it, but her guns are always defective, so that’s not likely.

Probably just some irrelevant nobody “gun for hire” that Cyrus paid to do the job.

Am thinking possibly Nikolas possibly found out that Austin and Ava have been doing the Nasty and he just didn’t like it.

I would think he would be more likely to take revenge out on Ava for that, if he was going after anybody… especially since he might still be angry with Ava for trying to kill him.

I really hope it’s not Nikolas though, because now that we know the REAL Nikolas isn’t ever coming back, I really couldn’t care all that much about the poor substitute versions of the character.

Ava did not try to kill him. She tried to keep the idiot from harming her daughter. As for wanting to get revenge on Ava for sleeping with Austin, what business is that of his? She can bang ten men if she wants to, they are divorced. Unlike him screwing a girl young enough to be his daughter, knocking her up while married to Ava. At least Ava had the decency to wait until they were divorced to be with Austin.

Couldn’t wait for the week-end to be over and they haven’t even addressed his murder yet. Ehat a bunch of losers!

I’m thinking they didn’t want to put a damper on the Quartermaine Thankspizzagiving celebration by having the death of a family member hanging over their heads, even one whose existence was barely acknowledged by them.

Which is a bit hypocritical, considering they threw Jason under the bus (Again) on Thanksgiving week two years ago.

My friend first penned #jolt because no one else could come up with anything else good for a ship name, so when Maura started using it to describe Austin and Ava she was giddy like a school girl. We were devastated last Friday because we are Roger fans first and foremost. I have not watched THAT show since. I won’t because after tuning in after a long hiatus stopped watching soaps for a 10 year stint but found out Roger was coming back as Todd and it peaked my interest in the show but vowed if Roger leaves so do I. I am keeping my word

This week on all-new episodes of General Hospital, new and old motivations come into play with dangerous consequences. According to the just released GH video spoilers video for the week of August 3-7, a bailiff calls out, “All rise!”

Now it’s Isaiah (Sawandi Wilson) vs. Curtis (Donnell Turner), as the surgeon is suing the owner of the Savoy for assault that ruined is ability to operate. At the end of the day, which of these men has enough evidence against the other? Portia (Brook Kerr) is by Isaiah’s side, while Jordan (Tanisha Harper) is with Curtis.

Leading into this week, viewers know that Willow doesn’t want the former escort anywhere near her children, Amelia and Wiley. Is this how she stops her, or is Jacinda up to old tricks and wants to frame Willow? Remember when Jacindsa drugged Drew (Cameron Mathison)? Stay tuned.

Finally, in the pick-up from last Friday’s cliffhanger, an emotional Jason (Steve Burton) continues to tell Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he cannot work for him anymore. Sonny ask, “So that’s it? You’re Out?” We fade to black.

Vincent Pastore, best known for his memorable role as Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero on HBO’s The Sopranos has passed away.

The veteran actor was found dead on August 1st in his home in the Bronx, New York. Pastore was 80-years-old. The cause of death is yet to be determined.

As well as his role on The Sopranos, many soap fans will recall he played multiple smaller roles on the beloved One Life to Live from 1995 and 2004. However, in 2008, he landed the short-term role as Maximus Giambetti on General Hospital.

PASTORE WANTED TO BE ON GENERAL HOSPITAL

Maximus was the mobster father of Sonny Corinthos’ (Maurice Benard) bodyguards: Max (Derk Cheetwood) and Milo (Drew Cheetwood)

According to Soap Opera Digest, Pastore told Soaps In Depth back in 2009, after appearing in a SOAPnet promotional campaign as a celebrity fan of General Hospital: “‘I’d love to be on the show. So they called up GH’s casting director (Mark Teschner) and Bobby (Robert Guza Jr. ex-head writer, GH) and they wrote me in!”

Pastore was a huge General Hospital fan from way back, who at one point told producers that he would watch the ABC soap opera while working in bars and nightclubs in the 70s and 80s.

Throughout his decades long career, Pastore appeared in films including: Goodfellas, Carlito’s Way and Men of Respect, The Jerky Boys: The Movie and the 1996 HBO TV movie Gotti.

In TV, besides The Sopranos, Pastore’s credits included: Law & Order, The Practice, Son of the Beach, Queens Supreme, Hawaii Five-0, Wu-Tang: An American Saga, plus the miniseries The Last Don II. Most recently, Vincent was a series regular on Gravesend and guest starred on Yellowjackets.

Pastore is survived by his daughter, Renee, son-in-law and granddaughter.
