Michelle Stafford Talks Recalls Decision to Go to ‘General Hospital’ and Return to ‘The Young and the Restless’
Three-time Daytime Emmy-winner Michelle Stafford (Phyllis Summers, The Young and the Restless), joined hosts Rebecca Budig (Taylor, The Bold and the Beautiful) and Greg Rikaart (Leo, Days of our Lives) during their latest episode of their Soapy podcast.
Throughout the conversation, Michelle touches upon the early years of her career from modeling to acting, plus balancing motherhood, her skin care line, Skin Nation, her time on the series Pacific Palisades with pal, Finola Hughes (Anna Devane, General Hospital)Â and her leading role on the CBS daytime drama series.
As daytime fans know, it was at the end of her second run as Phyllis (1994-1997 and then 2000-2013) that she decided to exit the series, launched her web series, The Stafford Project (2013), and then joined the cast of General Hospital in 2014 in the role of Nina Reeves, and stayed with the ABC daytime drama series until 2019. The part is now being played by another Daytime Emmy winner, Cynthia Watros.

When Michelle left GH, it was to go back home to Genoa City and reprise the role of Phyllis who in her absence was played by Gina Tognoni. It was in 2019 that Stafford returned to Y&R as Phyllis when the show asked her back. During her chat with Soapy’s Greg and Rebecca she explained a bit more about the set of circumstances.
FROM Y&R TO GH AND BACK
“I left Y&R for a couple of years, and then I went back, because they asked me and I thought, ‘Why not go?’ I mean, it wasn’t really much more than that,” said Michelle. “I was like, ‘this would be fun,’ and they also were really excited to have me. It’s really nice to be somewhere where they want you anywhere.”
Stafford added, “When I left (Y&R), I think I was kind of burnt out on the character. Even now, Phyllis is jacked all the time, and way that she’s written, especially now, and I really do like it, so don’t get me wrong, but she’s fighting for her life in every scene. She’s hanging from the cliff. That’s like where she is emotionally on a soul level.”
“I played Phyllis for a really long time. I was ready for something different. I went to General Hospital and it was totally different,” shared Michelle. “My sister was sick at the time, and I tweaked, man. I had my kid and I think I needed to do something else. I did my web series The Stafford Project and other stuff, and then Frank Valentini (executive producer, GH) asked me to come on GH. I thought, “Oh, this is such a different character, and she (Nina) was light. There was a lightness about her that I really liked and I really liked doing it.”

Now let us know, did you enjoy Michelle when she played Nina Reeves on GH? Glad she eventually returned to Y&R where she continues to play Phyllis for all she is worth and then some? Share your thoughts via the comment section.
I know it was her choice to return; however, it sits poorly with me, considering she swore she would never return to The Young and the Restless when she quit the role of Phyllis in 2013. And we had a welcomed refresh with Gina Tognoni in the role. But, between Stafford’s return and Josh Griffith’s writing, it feels like she is back to portraying the role she now claims she felt burnt out with portraying.
Yeah, I’m still not happy Gina got the shaft just to make room for Michelle to come back. That was BS!
Exactly I liked the other Phyllis. Michelle played her role very well until she quit and they bumped the other one so they could put her back in there and she’s been a train wreck ever since.
I agree; I felt like Gina Tognoni matured the role a lot, in the same way Sandra Nelson did during her stint.
I don’t think Gina got any shaft! She got 5 years on the number-one show. That’s a hefty paycheck, and a good addition to her resume. And she won a third Emmy … her first for Lead Actress.
I love Gina’s acting. I would love to see her back on soaps. It’s not even that I am a huge Michelle Stafford fan. But she IS Phyllis. When Gina replaced her for those 5 years, it just always felt like one of those “place-holder recasts”.
She did a good job, most viewers warmed up to her and came around, but I think everyone knew at some point that Michelle would be back.
I would like to see Gina in a brand new role written just for her. But all the shows are so top-heavy with females in that age-range … meaning women in their 30’s-40’s.
I’ll take more pearl clutching over absolute horseshit for $2,000.
I agree I miss Gina too, it was a nice change. It would be nice to see Michelle do something different Recently GH, which I’ve just started to watch aired an episode honouring Tony Geary and she was in that episode as Nina. It was great to see.
She played the best Nina on there the way she put her heart into saying her cousin but yet it was her brother so she thought JAY‘s name that relationship between she and he the one that they’ve got playing Nina now cannot even begin to be a Centella of what Michelle Stafford was in that role We got to see a completely vulnerable side to her or as with Waters #. She’s butchered that role she’s just like total on psycho. There’s no soft there’s no remorse. It’s just justification with her so would be nice to have Stafford back
Rosie, you provide an excellent example of why we could use a block feature in this forum. You speak gibberish.
Agreed 100 percent
No Cynthia is fabulous
Agreed, you summed it up perfectly
I miss Dex.
Y & R asked her back, but yes, she chose to return. She’s not the better of the two IMO either.
Ginas show design business is flourishing I’m sure so it’s better that Michelle is back in the role she made famous from day one
I liked the other Phyllis as well she fit the part perfectly. I would like to see her come back.
It sits poorly with me too. In fact, it bothers me to this day what Y&R and CBS did to Gina. I’ve never liked Stafford. Something about her just does not feel right.
I totally agree
What they did to Tognoni does not sit right with me, either, even though it is the name of the game in daytime. But given what Stafford said, it should have been a ‘non-factor’ for her return.
I miss Gina
Me too like a lot
Me too
100% agree because she had that vulnerable side to her and Stafford had already played out her role on there. She came in there as disruptor as the home wrecker, and when Gina rolled around while although she crashed and burned with Jack with Billy, at least it was believable And you could actually see when she was vulnerable and she hurt and stuff or as with Stafford she always has to play this. I am woman and I can do everything and it’s a turn off. It was one thing back in the day when her and Nick were at it and stuff because he needed a mommy, but she really hasn’t done anything for it. I stopped watching wine are over a year ago cause it just got to be the same crap and never found any comfort in Stafford coming back. I thought it was always a raw deal that Gina got pushed aside for her.
Its hard for me to see Michelle Stafford as Phyllis. Gina will always be the Phyllis for me.
No knock to Cynthia Watros, but i get upset that we didnt get to see Michelle Stafford play Nina in all of the powerhouse scenes and fights against Laura Wright(Carly). Laura and Cynthia have an amazing dynamic but could you imagine Laura and Michelle going at it?! Michelle played Nina in the earlier years before the character got REALLY good. Sigh.
Stafford left GH at a point when Nina could’ve easily be written off the canvas permanently. Watros came in and made the character relevant. She made me actually care about Nina – something Stafford’s portrayal did not.
Have to disagree. The Nina that Stafford played was more believable than the role that Walrose is playing a complete psycho. I mean Stafford had a little issues with being a psycho. The psycho was coming out, but not to the extreme of what this one Walrose is doing Stafford actually showed some humility and vulnerability. Where is that one now? Complete narcissist and psychopath complete justification and at least from staff or you could see that there was remorse from this one complete justification.
Nope. As I stated in another post, as Nina, Stafford vacillated between being bratty, aggressive, sassy Phyllis and acting like an infantile, nail biting weirdo. I hated her version of Nina. I didn’t like Nina or Phyllis until they were played by other actresses. Stafford is too campy for my taste with her propensity to constantly ham it up for the camera.
Harry…oh I agree with you…100% AND BEYOND!!!!! To me, Gina Tognoni is A WAY BETTER actress than Michelle Stafford…and has WAY MORE ACTING RANGE!!!!! To me, MS is way too one-dimensional. Example: A while back, remember when Phyllis (played by Gina) TOTALLY WENT OFF on Victor Newman while she was on the witness stand??? To me, THAT’S ACTING!!!!!
Harry…YOU TOTALLY ROCK!!!!!
HAPPY 2026!!!!!
Yes, she was brilliant. She needs to back playing Phyllis. Gina chemistry with the entire cast. Michelle is a extremely obnoxious way over the top performer.
Thank you, Jaybird and long time no see! Yes, Gina knew the importance of the timely pause, the necessary quiet undertones before she rises up to produce a crescendo of emotional heights. Phyllis always seems to be in a state of swarmy hysteria. And you, Jaybird totally rock! Happy New Year!
Writers destroyed the Nina character.
FF all her and also Portia scenes.
Disagree
Just like she sunk the character of Phyllis. Gina was and is.top notch and she made Phyllis must see t.v. now when Michelle comes on I
Its fast forward time on THE DVR
She was great as Nina . But I don’t think k if she stayed that Willow wouldn’t be hear daughter or even Nell. But i really really love Cynthia she brought Nina into a whole new light and passion.
Are you for real? MS absolutely sucked as Nina! It was like watching Phyllis all over again! Cynthia is much better at it!
I always thought she left because JFP wasn’t letting her get her way on everything . I don’t watch anymore I think she is over the top in her acting choices these days, I read the recaps to see if I am missing anything and sadly I’m not this was a show I once loved so much.
There’s probably a lot of truth in the JFP story. Phelps had a reputation of not valuing actresses over 40. (Stafford was 48 in 2013 when her contract came up). For reference, see Phelps treatment of Jackie Zeaman, Kristina Wagner, and Leslie Charleson.
I don’t think it’s an age thing with JFP (she adored Linda Dano on Another World, for example) as much as it is that she always, always, always comes in to a show and butts heads with established powerhouse actresses to try to show she’s the boss bitch so that everyone else thinks “Wow, if she’ll mess with [extremely popular] Y she’ll make mincemeat out of me; I’d better toe the line.” She generally doesn’t go after THE lead folks (so it wasn’t going to be Melody Thomas Scott at YR, for example), but after someone whose popularity is high enough to be someone you’d think was untouchable. If memory serves me (and it might not; so much gets jumbled in my mind these days), it was Sarah Brown at GH and Robin Strasser at OLTL–she made their lives so miserable they left. I wonder if the same thing happened with Stafford. It’s hard to believe, given the timing, that JFP had NOTHING to do with it; she’d just come in within the last year when MS left, and she was gone by the time MS came back. Coincidence? I doubt it.
Interesting theory about not going after the leads. One would think that JFP learned her lesson after taking Beverlee McKinsey for granted. Dano, Slezak, Elliot, and Scott were pretty much untouchable. Elliot had Geary in her corner, which helped as well.
In addition to McKinsey, both Kristina Wagner and (especially) John Ingle got the upper hand with JFP. GH had a front burner story revisiting Maxie’s heart transplant. Wagner turned down her cut contract renewal forcing Phelps to put (a recently dropped to recurring) John York back on contract and bring a miscast Sandra Ferguson on as Felicia.
Phelps thought Ingle would accept recurring. As soon as he went off contract, DAYS offered him a contract. GH scrambled to (horrendously) recast Edward with Jed Allan. Ingle returned to GH on contract after his 2 year deal with DAYS expired.
Wasn’t JFP also horrifically brutal to Genie Francis back when she was on Y& R? That is what I’ve read and it would validate the premise that she aggressively challenged powerhouse veteran actresses.
My understanding at the time was this was related to Scientology. The actor Michael Fairman came on the show cast as Catherine Chancellor’s husband. He was an outspoken former Scientologist who made it clear how horrible the religious leaders had been to him and his wife. That’s what was happening when Michelle left and went to GH. Those who watch GH will remember that their insane asylum was called Miscavage, a la Scientology leader David Miscavage. That name was changed when Michelle joined the show.
around the time that Fairman left Y&R, Stafford returned.
Oh wow. I did not know any of that but it certainly makes sense.
You are so right, and its sad
Gina T made Y&R awesome, with they way she played Phyllis. Her acting was out of this world, giving day in and day out. I was hooked, then when I heard that Michelle was returning and they dumped Gina, it was awful and horrible. So rude and mean and hateful. I couldn’t believe they let the idoit running the show do this and CBS did nothing. Now with Michelle back, it’s back to boring boring and boring. I have skip her with my remote when they show her.
Y& R was awesome, today it’s not. Bring back dead charcters from the 80’s/90’s and Josh G is dumb as they come, why is CBS letting him ruin this show? Gina will probably never return, but she made impact with me and I sure others, but now even Beyond the Gates is beating down on Y&R! I guess this could be the next soap to bite the dust it is 2026. Bad storylines, and all, even Michael’s end of the year reviews didn’t give Y&R any kudos!
*Note BB storyline about retirement and leaving your job due to retirement was Awesome! So true and I watching could feel the pain and sadness portrayed by John McCook -awesome actor! A real sense of what we all feel or will feel when we get to that age and have to leave our jobs. I’ve been at mine for 34years now, and I don’t want to leave either.
I honestly do not understand how Y&R has been in the number one and number two spot in the ratings for a while now. I have tried tuning in several times over the last couple of years and I cannot get back into it. It’s so boring. The show was at its best in the 90s for sure I will stay true to General Hospital. It is the only one I still watch. I quit watching. B&B, Day’s and Y&R a couple decades ago, but I’ve at least tried to give Y&R a chance here and there!
i have to say michelle stafford is the one and only phyliss! she adds that vulnerability to the role so one minute you want her to leave your house forever and the next minute you wanna hug her ! she’s one of the best in daytime and i will add it’s tiresome always hearing about Gina t she’s a good actress but she was never Phyliss
As mean and bitchy as Phyllis is Michelle makes her kind of goofy too lol. She is the only Phyllis I loved that soapy interview love Becky Budig on Bold and Beautiful right now!!
The thing about MS is that she can only play Phyllis. That’s it. No versatility at all. She was horrible as Nina.in tact she was only Phyllis NOT Nina. Cynthia is Nina! Gina was great in everything she ever did. Better actress imo.
Totally agree, Ashley.
Oh, please come back to GH that role has never been the same since they put that other one in there and the way you say JAY and the way you had respect for Maxi please come back
Oh brother.
I miss Gina. I can’t handle Stafford’s overacting. She wasn’t like this when she played Phyllis the first time. The show brought in Gina, and I will never forget how she threw open the doors of that church and burst onto the scene at Nick and Sharon’s wedding, the role of Phyllis was immediately hers. I was like Michelle who? Gina gave so much dimension and depth to Phyllis that had never been there before. What the show did to her was terrible and so ridiculously unfair. Michelle chose to leave. Why ask her back? I miss Gina to this day. But I know she’s doing well and doing projects she enjoys. So, she’s better for it. I love Cynthia Watros as Nina. She’s so talented!
Agree with all of this. I recentky saw Gina on an episode of The Sopranos. She just lights up the scene just from entering it. I gave up Y&R after decades of devoted viewership due to the bad writing as well as the scene chewing Stafford. Like you, I love Watros’s portrayal of Nina. She fleshed her out in such a way as to make her vulnerable, sympathetic and real. Moreover, Watros has a flair for comedy as seen with her clumsy and awkward scenes.
I stopped watching Y&R when Gina Tognoni was fired for Michelle to return to the show. Gina & Jason created the wonderful pairing of #Philly which was so magical.
I love Michelle Stafford! Gina rubbed off on me eventually and yes she’s wonderful! But there’s only one Phyllis and that’s Michelle and also let’s bring Doug Davidson back as Paul!!!! Y & R your not listening
Michelle Stafford and Cynthia Watros are both excellent actresses, along with Gina Tognoni. I don’t think Gina would come back even if they begged and offered her all of the money in the world. She was treated badly. Michelle Stafford ‘s Phyllis many years ago was a compelling character. She was an intelligent and sexy vixen. She could make you hate her, but made you feel for her when she was done wrong. Josh Griffith has butchered the character. She is now a total mess! Out of control, desperate and I have to say a loser. This isn’t Phyllis. He’s also destroyed the characters of Sharon, who also seems somewhat neurotic and Victoria, who is rarely seen, into Margaret from Father Knows Best! (I am dating myself here). This used to be must watch tv for me. Now days I miss Y&R for two weeks. It’s a shame what he has done to this show.
Gina was awful Phyllis she wasnt good as kelly Cramer and she wasn’t good at all as dinah on gl. She always looks like she’s acting.
LOL..stop the cap and stop trolling. Gina was awesome!
Yes
I never cared for the role of Nina until Cynthia Watros took over! I don’t see how the role of Nino was like considering she played the same psycho Phyllis character on GH lol! Those crazy ranting eyes and over the top antics! Cynthia made the character of Nina believable and her dynamics with the other characters changed considerably , in a good way!
Oh yeah. Loved her. Nobody place crazy like Michelle! She’s the best!!!
Will Willow be found out to be the one that shot Drew
Kimberlin Brown is much better at crazy. Love Sheila over Phyllis any day!
She was the best Nina on General Hospital don’t care for Phyllis character
I despise Drew also. I thought Willow shot him until I was reminded of Selina Woo and Trina’s dad were “talking” about Drew’s demise then Sidwell running her out of town. I am so glad Willow finally had an original thought. Give the girl a medal, a key to the city
Gina Tognoni would make an excellent Samantha Gene Brady.
Nah; if she went to Days of Our Lives, it should be Billie Reed. I do think Sami should be recast sometime this year if Alison Sweeney is unable to recommit full-time or even on a more persistent recurring basis.
I beleive Michelle went back to young and restless because she got more money to return. It was about money, nothing else
I love Michele when she came to GH and was sad to see her go, but Cynthia to me is now Nina, and as much as I did like Michele it was not enough to follow her to YR, I’ve been curious because YR has several ex GH stars on their show but when I see them none of them have convinced me to stick around and watch them in their new roles, in fact when I have tuned in Phyllis seems a lot like Nina, but the other characters around her are just snooze ball, I really can’t take it, so that’s how I see it and I’m sure many others have similar believes.

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).
Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.
Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON
Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”
Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things:Â Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).
Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.
“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?
During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.
Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.
You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.
Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.Â
Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.
As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY
Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.
Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.
Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS
Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.
In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”
So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.
