Those sands through the hourglass are not about to run out anytime soon, with news today that NBC has renewed Days of our Lives for a record 55th season for the network.  That means DAYS is picked-up through September 2020.

The actors and crew have such a tremendous respect for ‘Days’ and what it means to fans. We believe that level of commitment shows through and touches our audience year after year.”

DAYS executive producer, Ken Corday expressed: “It’s a great day in Salem! The sands in the hourglass will continue to flow for yet another year. We’re grateful to NBC and Sony for their continued support of the show and, of course, to our dedicated and passionate fans, we owe it all to you. Thank you for taking us through our 55th season. We are proud that audiences both in the U.S. and around the world will get to enjoy this award-winning series for another year.”

Days’ 53rd season saw a 4% increase in total viewers from September 2017 to September 2018 compared to the previous twelve months. According to NBC, that is 2.55 million vs. 2.45 million in live +7 per Nielsen Media Research.

Days of our Lives is produced by Corday Productions, Inc. in association with Sony Pictures Television. It is executive produced by Corday, Greg Meng and Albert Alarr, with Ron Carlivati as head writer.

The soap aired its 13,500th episode in 2018. The show first premiered as a half-hour drama in 1965 and expanded to an hour 10 years later.

So, excited to hear there is more DAYS ahead? Comment below.

Grear! Now being Bo Back!!!

Exactly!

That would be amazing. I’d also love to see a Bo/Hope/Rafe triangle.

Not even Ron Carlivati can kill this show… but not for lack of trying.

Ron saved DOOL from being cancelled, he is doing a terrific job.

Hi Helen,
RC saved GH, also
GH was a breath away from being canceled and RC brought it back, saved it.

GH still hasn’t recovered from the damage that Ron & his pal Frank inflicted on the show in February 2012. Bringing Steve Burton back was at least a step in the right direction, but as long as they keep forcing useless characters like Frodd “Baldwin” and Whiny Heiny (complete with fake ties to long time GH characters) they can’t truly recover.

It’s not Ron C’s fault GH is still bad, GH was bad before and after he left. It’s been like 5 or 6 years now.

Very true Su000

I know that Ron wrote the show so that Michael could cut his ties with Sonny after he purposely shot A.J. General Hospital probably couldn’t wait to re-unite Sonny and Michael because the relationship returned to Michael calling him dad. What person in his right mind calls a person dad who kills his real father? G.H. writes Sonny with everyone gravitating to him with love on top of love. I’m almost at the point where I’m about to quit watching again because the show presents a mobster as a paragon of virtue and makes Julian , Franco, Ava , Valentin and anyone else considered bad people unworthy of love and
friends. Plus, notice that all of Sonny’s children love him and all of Julian’s children hate him ; however, they love Sonny. Beyond unbelievable!

That’s what I said, Boop. …..Michael has had a memory lapse for a couple of years. And, Carly is completely fine with it. It is incredible how Ava, Valentin, Julian, and others are maligned ( as they should be), while Sonny’s “sins” are always forgiven …..why? …..because he genuflects with our 0h-so-sad, defrocked priest? He cries, he shows emotion, he loves his father and family!!!! What a good guy! Such a loving, noble hear! “The head never rules the heart, but just becomes its partner in crime”. (Mignon McLaughlin. That’s Sonny in a nut shell. These writers pick and choose their heroes and princes…..Sonny will forever be Gallant, Sir Galahad, the purest knight…..no matter what!! He could kill the Pope, and the Church will absolve him of all sins….as long as Griffin stands by him.
I can’t wait for Sonny and Margaux to capitulate into that bizzare attraction between them…..she’s, at least, his size. How many times will that be? I mean….Cheating, divorcing, getting back together again?

The whole thing with AJ’s (third) death was just one example of Ron’s crappy writing, and his personal vendetta against Sean Kanan, for whatever reasons.

Having Ava (another one of his pets) shoot AJ to save her own ass from being prosecuted for killing Connie Falconeri (who stupidly wrote the initials “AJ” in her own blood, which in itself was a ripoff of the mid 70s murder of Diana Taylor, but that’s a whole other story) would have been a reasonable story. But Ava’s $1.98 WalMart special gun jammed up when she tried to kill AJ and of course AJ retaliated by trying to strangle her. Sonny then walks in, admittedly not understanding the situation, and picks up Ava’s gun, which then fires the bullet already in the chamber. I honestly doubt that Sonny even actually pulled the trigger. In either case, there was no “cold blooded murder” on Sonny’s part, regardless of the past history between Sonny & AJ.

Beyond that, AJ seemed to be recovering from his bullet wound in the hospital, and then suddenly died. More than likely somebody tampered with his IV, and that would have been Ava, not Sonny who had the motive to do that.

Sean Kanan’s version of AJ was at least somewhat redeemable, as long as he stayed away from the booze. Never cared for the Billy Warlock version at all. Don’t know why ReRon made it personal with Kanan, but that’s why AJ was killed off yet again.

Although I was partial to Sean Kanan, I grew to love Billy Warlock’s version, as well. AJ was always the underdog I rooted for and I’m still angry to this day that they took a long awaited step forward to right the wrong that the untouchable three (Carly, Sonny, Jason) did to AJ and then undid the whole thing by killing him and having Michael return to the fold as if AJ never existed.

The story goes that Sean and Ron had it out over the story they gave AJ…that they once again made him a victim, had him accused, gave him a relationship (Liz) and then took it away, gave him the ridiculous relish story and had Tracy making fun of AJ’s weight (which, obviously, Sean being the bearer of said weight) wasn’t thrilled about. When he voiced his concerns they had it out, exchanged some public insult tweets and Sean was shown the door.

So “new” writers get to kill off a vet both in character and actor. Wonder how Frank and Ron would have felt if new writers came in and decided to kill off one of the Buchanan’s.

And of course the “ridiculous relish story” was all a vehicle for ReRon to rebrand his OLTL Manning pets as Frodd & the Twit (thanks to the Prospect Park lawsuit).

I would have rather seen a legitimate power struggle for ELQ among the legitimate Quartermaines myself. Hell, there could be another one even now since Jason’s return, along with the existence of Drew & Oscar, should call for the re-shuffling of the whole deck as far as ELQ stock goes. Michael’s kid too, for that matter, though most of the mortals up there are still in the dark about that piece of the puzzle.

They are decimating the core characters/families. I still say I like the show, but it’s just not GH. It’s another soap. I DID watch the vintage episodes this holiday season and they were such a great trip into the past. And, not that I needed a reminder, but the CAST was there; not the new characters that are part of the “new” show.

As for the Quartermaine’s, they have systematically eliminated them. The recent episode with just Monica and Ned of the original Q clan (with Michael and Olivia) was just sad. I saw the ghosts of Lila, Edward, AJ, Alice, Alan, Tracy…can’t stop people from retiring but to get rid of AJ, Alan, Dillon, Skye, …to now kill off Oscar (which they had to do once they gave him his diagnosis…that was no soapy we-can-fix-this-disease) was just another blow to the future of the Q’s. Not to mention Drew already lost the two sons he thought were his, now they take away the son that IS his.

And let’s not even get into the atrocity of Michael completely forgiving Sonny and Carly for everything AJ and taking back the Corinthos name. I can only hope that Michael stays with Monica in the Q house to raise his son, that Monica gets hit with a “what-the-F-have-I-been-smoking when I allowed Carly and Sonny to enter this house (AJ’s family house…) and that Michael’s future visits with his parents are somewhere other than the Q’s. Sonny and Carly should’t be allowed to step foot in it.

But of course ass-kisser writers who for some reason can’t deny Laura Wright and Maurice will probably have them inherit the Q mansion before too long.

Sickening.

You’re right about that, rebecca…..Michael is THE direct Q heir, if I’m not mistaken. Sarcasm aside; it’s not so far-fetched.
Monica is the resident lady of the manor; but that could change, upon the whim of the writers…..or if Leslie is “pushed” into retirement.
Michael could very well move his mother and her lackey in the Q mansion. How about Jason and Sam?
Imagine all of them living under one roof?! Entertaining!!

that AJ /whatever his mane is walked out of GH not giving enough notice to write him out in any other way (quickly) as was done..
I liked he was killed lol

You didn’t “know” AJ, su. That’s the bottom line. You can like or not like whichever character you choose, but you’re not speaking from a place of history or character familiarity. And he didn’t “walk out.” It was “suggested” he do so. Meaning, they gave him no choice. Which was disgusting. He’s part of the history of the show; not Ron and Frank. They should have respected his character’s history, Sean Kanan’s role on the show which longtime fans remember dating back decades ago. They wouldn’t be thrilled if OLTL had survived and new writers decided to just get rid of one of the Buchanan’s out of spite.

Boop; you have literally expressed my exact sentiments. Exact!

Agree Helen, he really is. Days is on fire!

I loved One Life when Ron was writing.

The show is fine too me. You can’t make me doubt Ron, Satan!

Wonderful news. As far as I am concerned Days is number one in my book.I never miss and episode and I never will. Glad to see Eve back now bring back Vivian and that will make me happy.

Eve isn’t back. That abomination is not Eve Donovan and she never will be. As far as Vivian goes, we know she survived her alleged shooting by Kate, and was in the same warehouse where Jack & Elvis were brought back from the dead. So we can assume she will turn up eventually. As long as Louise Sorel is available…. no need for another horrible recast in that part. (ReRon would like nothing more than to give another job to one of his OLTL pets)

What ever happened to Gabby? She use to be so nice now she is well the devil herself. I hope Julie does open her mouth and says something to the police about Gabby. She has turned into a real a-hole. Sorry about that but that is the way I feel.

I feel the same way Carol, seems most people do. The actress who plays Gabi contact is up in April so she may not resign since she’s on some prime time show, here’s hoping!

I did see that she is in a Lifetime movie and believe she plays a killer unless I am wrong since they didnt actually show the complete clip of her. From what I saw she is worse then Gabby. That is where x Days stars seem to end up in a Lifetime movie. However Kate Mansi was in a couple of them and believe me she isnt a angel either. Get this the guy who plays Ben for some reason I cannot think of his name well he played a serial killer in a movie It was called stalked by a reality star very good movie. So perhaps that is where the actresss who plays Gabby is doing making movies for Lifetime.

Gabby has always been a snake.

Yup….something else I’ve always maintained. Gabi has had her eye on Chad since forever…tried her best and worst to get her hooks into him…..And, she did ; for a while, anyway….

Thank you NBC, for renewing Days. No one stays dead in Salem, please bring back Vivian and Ivan her sidekick. Also bring back Bo Brady and LeAnn Hunley as Anna Dimers

That is what I say bring back Vivian and her sidekick they made us laugh at times.

Hi, Claudio,
Happy New Year…..I was just telling Patrick that Vivian MUST be alive……that would add the cherry to the renewal.
Would Peter ( Bo) come back? Imagine THAT love triangle!! I’d love to have Anna back, as well….Roman needs a love life!!….And, Carly Manning—–adore her… There are so many to mention. Melanie is another character—-and, if Casey Deidrick would resume the role of Chad ( when Flynn departs?), then, all’s well in Salem!!
❤️

I meant Anna Dimera lol

Renewed through September 2020! That’s 20 more months of DAYS…at the very least!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With this renewal, DAYS will pass ATWT’s length and will most likely reach 55!

Loving DAYS…Turn to the soap gods and away from Satan!

Away from me?? I used to be ON Days, for Hell’s sake! Remember when I possessed Marlena?

Great News! Love that Susan Seaforth Hayes is getting air time!

Yes, go, Susan!!!!

I love watching old game shows on BUZZR—-I recently watched PASSWORD with both Susan and Bill ( the 70’s, or early 80’s, I think?)….what a beautiful pair; especially Susan—-absolutely gorgeous!!

Great news for the cast, crew and fans. There are a few things I would love to see in the coming year. First of all, the return of Steve Johnson. Second, the redemption of Gabi. Third, a big love story for Kate. Fourth, the return of Stephanie and Joey. Last, a few new sets, something new other than Horton Town Square, the park, Brady Pub, the Horton living room and the Kiriakis living room. I would like to see Kayla’s house (where they lived when Ava was on the show). I love Ben and Ciara, Jennifer and Jack, and am hoping a front-burning storyline for Hope not acting crazed over Ben. Keep Victor and Maggie, Doug and Julie front and center.

Yes for sure, they really need to show some new sets

YAY!!!!!! Days is awesome!!!!

great news!!!!!!!!!!!!!never miss a day of days!

It’s amazing news. I also feel we got the renewal even earlier this year, so that is a relief. But now the priority should be to re-sign Stephen Nichols and ask him to come back to Days.

And bring back Stephen Nichols; he needs to see his brother!

Indeed! It was Jack who found Steve when he turned up after being dead for 17 years, and helped him regain his memory. Time for big brother to return the favor.

Excellent DAYS!!

This is fabulous news. Days keeps getting more & more intriguing along with heartfelt characters and stories. Keep up the wonderful work ! Congrats to all involved. Lisa Fath

Good job, NBC! Was just bantering about the soap genre with a friend from high school online! Cough. Cough.
30 year reunion coming up. Days still connects us from long ago.
Never change your classic opening or classic closing credits.

Jack and Eve were the topics of conversation.

While I am a GH viewer, I am thrilled that DAYS viewers will continue to see their show for at least one more season. My 99 year old grandma still watches daily despite being nearly blind. I believe her “stories” are a big part of her staying sharp and engaged daily, so God bless everyone involved in DAYS production.

I wonder if Frank Valentini @General Hospital NOTES the impressive gains of his fellow colleague. Do Shelly and Chris know or aspire to try … WHAT the eff is going on with him.

it’s staggering to know the catapult the accolade the fan rejoice @DAYS is celebrating

Ron CArlivati : “Thank You” @Ken Corday production… light that candle in honor of your parents Ted and Betty Corday, who have given you every thing you “are”. MIND THE STORE KEN. this has rocketed back. the love and respect the camaraderie the order of things the Passion is all their. LOVE THIS SHOW TO BITS

LOVE THIS SHOW FOREVER

Salemite’ persevere

Salute

PS: @Ken – “minding the store” GIVE FANS some sign . CHANGE A FEW of the sets… give them a face lift… LIFT LIFT LIFT… those park scenes… ???? I never minded because it was all in the writing… take down that large green wall, ie: the crawling ivy… open them up … lively open just love that cast

hi Patrick..
Now, the question is-
will GH get its renewal?

Once again it is circling the drain and it needs to clean house!
GH needs; out with the old in with the new, desperately.

So glad its my favorite soap worldwide, (i watch one Aussie, one UK and one US soap)and at the moment my favorite show period.

Congratulations to everyone involved with DOOL! It’s really firing on all cylinders.

Be still mine heart!! Best news…..
Looking forward to another year of excellent producing, storytelling and acting!!
I just wish TPTB would wave their magic wand and turn Xander into an Ok guy; if not a good one.
Xander could be the hero in demolishing Leo’s devilish plans. He could pretend to be his partner-in-crime and expose him for whom he is. Imagine the rewards from ‘unkie’ Vic!!

Xander is “wickedly” a good actor, as well, no? he’s a stand up guy.. who know’s he carries the show with…. so he takes it in stride that he’s asked to “disrobe” his shirt.. lately, plus… he was in a speedo today…

I was laughing so .. at Greg Rikhaart’ Leo antics and schlepping drool over Xander. it was FUN’ny. so yeah, your idea that if Xander could right the Kirakis family with the unfortunate downfall of Leo… would be choice… altho, i’m so looking forward to OUR “Gloria” dancing in Salem. another Y&R mishap lands @DAYS !!! hoorah perhaps she will ignite and fire the denizen of Salem. Leo has really taken off on the show… perhaps “mother” will take the fall for his character redeem? maybe she knows Vivian ?????? it’s just going to be a heart tug to see her , reunite with (Kevin) Leo… one of the wickedest and most loving mother/son relationship. @DAYS WELCOMES Judith Chapman

I’ve wanted Paul Tolfer to be reinvented because he has all the requisite fire for corporate business man about town… and to see if he can truly dance with the ladies… he’s an intrigue…because he keeps coming back… so that in itself is keeper

I love everything you wrote, Patrick…..every idea is en pointe.
I love Xander—what a sight!! HOT!!
Agreed—the fact that Tolfer keeps making an appearance is very telling. He’s not just gorgeous; he’s one amazing actor to boot. I can watch him all day long!! And, the interaction between Xander and Leo was priceless—there’s a definite connection; not sexually—but something!! Brothers?? Hmmmm…. Vivian is his mother? LOL….too much sisterly/brotherly love??
Greg is amazing!! He could very well be “sanctified” along with Xander. ….I had no idea Greg had that comedic gene in him, LOL…..I’m loving it all—Days is on fiya!!
Gloria—yeah—miss her as much as I do Paul (Doug Davidson)….
You know, Patrick, I think Vivian has risen—-I hope so, anyway. It would be fantabulous if “Gloria” and Vivian were sisters?? Imagine that—-add Kate to that scene and we have a Coven!!

Xander off camera was probably told by uncle Vic to help him do exactly that

Wish they hire Doug Davidson as David Banning-who did not die-and could be a new love interest for Kate!!!

Hmmmmm- I like that, Jimmy. Do you think Kate will be ‘good’, again? LOL……this charecter has had continuous ebbs and flows—-back and forth; like a pendulum between good and evil. Which way will she swing next?
Doug does deserve to be on our screen…..I blinked and he was gone…..
❤️

Yes…Kate will be good again-good at being evil-lol

Another renewal…no mystery there…lol.

I’m happy that Days Of Our Lives has been renewed for another year at least but not surprised either because i’m sure we have heard rumors or something if NBC was even cancelling the show.

Awesome

Great and well deserved news! Let’s all do the Hattie dance and drink champagne out of the bottle like Vivian, Marlena and Kate to celebrate!

And now DAYS is ahead of GH in total viewers and all the demos! DAYS is also ahead of B&B in two demos!!

Hayden Panettiere Remembered: ‘Guiding Light’ and More Stars Mourn Her Loss in Wake of Tragic Death

Published

on

By

Hayden Panettiere

Tributes continue to pour in from the entertainment and soap opera community, and especially from former co-stars of Hayden Panettiere, who died on Sunday at the age of 36.

Panetierre was best-known to soap fans for her roles as as a young Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light and Sarah Roberts on One Life to Live, and as an adult in ABC’s music city primetime soap opera, Nashville where she starred as Juliette Barnes opposite General Hospital alum, Jonathan Jackson (ex-Lucky, GH and ex-Avery, Nashville).

As previously reported, Panettiere died on Sunday afternoon, August 16 in a home in Greenville, South Carolina. The coroner released an official statement on Monday, which read in part “no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death. The cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies.” First responders rushed to the scene after a 911 call about a woman who was unresponsive from an overdose and in cardiac arrest.

Now below, check out some of the heartfelt remembrances for the extraordinarily talented, Hayden Panettiere from several of her Guiding Light co-stars and more. Michael Fairman TV will continue to add to the list of tributes throughout the next few days as they become available, as well as keep you updated on any further developments in Panettiere’s death.

Beth Chamberlin (Beth Raines, GL): “Hayden played my daughter for 3 years. She was the most brilliant child actor I’ve ever seen.  The things she could do, the way she could remember 20+ pages of dialogue, day after day.  Even on days where the director would come out between dress and tape and make huge cuts to the scenes, Hayden, never once forgot a line or missed her blocking.  The adults would, but not Hayden.  I felt blessed to work with her. And always perfect in her playing of the scene.”

Connie Britton (Rayna James, Nashville): “This was Hayden. Bursting with brilliance, shining so bright. I have no words for this sad song. Just heartbreak.
I love you girl. Sleep easy now. 💔”

Tina Sloan (Lillian Raines, GL): “Hayden Panettiere was my granddaughter on Guiding Light. She died at 36 and was such a star.”

Rebecca Budig (ex-Michelle Bauer, GL, now Taylor, B&B): “I remember working alongside her..loved her and her family. She and Beth were spectacular together. So sad for her family and those who knew and loved her.”

Karla Mosley: (Dani Dupree, BTG) “This is awful awful news. Blessings to her soul and all who loved her.”

Photo: CBS

Bethany Joy Lenz: (ex-Michelle Bauer, GL) “There is nothing that posting pictures on the internet can do. I avoid it usually in moments like this. But Im here with my head in my hands and I don’t know what else to do in aside from praying for her soul, which I have done and will continue. I’m crushed. I knew the wild little blonde. Was she nine? Ten? I was eighteen. She ran through the Screen Gem studio hallways at 222 E44th St. laughing and playing games in between Guiding Light blocking and camera rehearsals. Long, unruly curls trailing behind her. She knew her lines and everyone else’s. Her intelligence was astonishing. She understood scenes and nuance and human struggle like no child I’d ever seen on camera. And she’d sit with you for a great conversation, then giggle and go play. We’d connect on and off over the years, like the cousin in the family reunion who got famous and life moved her away—but I always felt such joy seeing her when we were lucky enough to cross paths. We’d make a pact to talk soon. Lunch. Dinner. Somewhere we could curl up into a corner—but we never quite made it happen. I mostly stayed up to date through mutual friends.”

Lenz continued, “I don’t understand how this is real. Everything seemed to be turning around. She was coming BACK to life, wasn’t she? It’s too young and there’s still so much more life. And her daughter…. Hayden, you are surround by love. I’m sorry for every moment I didn’t reach out or check in. This can’t be real. These are moments of how I knew you, in glimpses over 26 years. I don’t know how to process this. I am praying for you to know the peace of God now and always.”

Brittany Snow: (ex-Daisy Lemay, GL) “I was lucky enough to play your sister for 3 years. I related to you so much in so many ways. Ways that I never even told you. Your talent was remarkable & so was your determination to be a bold, bright shining light. And you were. Always supportive, curious, funny and brave. You will always be remembered undoubtedly for your undeniable strength and spirit 💔.”

Charles Esten, Hayden Panettiere

Photo: CestenIG

Charles Esten (ex-Deacon Clayborne, Nashville): Patty (Esten’s wife) and I are stunned and saddened at the loss of our dear and beautiful friend Hayden. I will never forget the first time I met her. In a sound stage office in Hollywood, I was finishing up my very first NASHVILLE audition. I had read two Deacon scenes before pulling out my guitar and singing two songs. I said my goodbyes and, hoping I’d done well, went to open the door to leave. Instead of swinging all the way out, the door bumped into somebody. Kinda hard.”

“To my complete surprise, It was Hayden Paniettiere, who – in full Juliette Barnes mode – had been listening with her ear to the door. Instead of looking even a little bit caught, her face instantly bloomed into the most beautiful smile. Eyes twinkling, she clapped her hands and said, “That was so good!!” I can promise you that in that moment, there was nothing in the world I needed to hear more than that. I told her that, along with my HEROES-watching family, I was already a big fan of hers, and that I was grateful for the very kind words. It was her turn to go in, so as I went to leave, I said a jokingly cocky, “See you on the set!”

“I was, of course, many auditions away from landing that incredible role. But when I finally did, and showed up in Nashville to start work, she walked right up to me, pointed in my face, and with that magical grin said, “See you on the set!” From there, we became fast friends, working very hard to play those 2 troubled Nashvillians, but always having fun and laughing a whole lot along the way. She was, of course, extraordinarily talented, infusing her larger-than-life character with all the heart, charisma, humor, whip-smart intelligence, and flat-out magic that were, alongside whatever troubles and pain she carried, a part of her own personal palette. What a great gift it was to act with her, sing with her, and to just be her friend. She was always extremely kind to my family, especially my wife, Patty, who I’m certain she liked even more than me.”

Together, we are heartbroken that she is gone, and praying for her family, and for all those who, like us, will miss and mourn her so dearly. God bless you, Hayden.
Rest In Peace and Light ❤️

Emme Rylan: (ex-Lizzie Spaulding, GL et al.)” So very sad. Rest in peace sweet soul.”

Bryan Craig: (ex-Morgan, GH) posted a text exchange via his Instagram story he had with Panettiere where they laughed about her making fun of his hat. He wrote: “Love you Hayden. Rest in peace Angel.” Craig later added, “Cherish the moments with people you love and care about. As cliche as it sounds. Send that text, get that cup of coffee, tell them you love them and you’re proud of them. You may not get the chance again.”

John Oliver Recaps His ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘General Hospital’ Soap Opera Experience on ‘Last Week Tonight’

Published

on

By

John Oliver

Last Week Tonight host, John Oliver had his soap dreams come true on not one, but two long-running daytime dramas, heralding it his “hot soap summer” on the Sunday night, August 16 edition of his HBO series.

As viewers recall, Oliver’s tour of soap duty began back in March when he made a request and an offer to appear in any daytime drama that would have him with certain conditions, which included: having a ridiculous and over the top character name, a juicy storyline, and a slap.

Both Days of Our Lives and General Hospital came a-calling for Oliver, taking him up on his offer and in short order. Oliver appeared on GH in the role of the head of the WSB named  Z on episodes airing July 2-6, and then on DAYS in the role of Salem’s chief water inspector, Devlin St. John, in episodes that streamed the week of August 11.

Photo: ABC

FIRST STOP, PORT CHARLES

On Last Week Tonight, Oliver shared that both soaps delivered, and then launched into a comedic send-up complete with clips from some of his scenes. Starting with General Hospital.

Oliver said, “To General Hospital’s credit, they met all my requirements and more. First, my character got to arrive by a helicopter flanked by a pair of armed goons. And I got to do a dramatic walk during which I bravely shot in the general direction of a guy who was already on the ground. It’s called being an action star, by the way, unless you’re me or Vin Diesel, you really wouldn’t understand. And then in my next scene, I revealed my true identity. (Oliver played the scene where Josslyn wakes up in a hospital bed with Z standing at the side of her bed introducing himself).

He continued, “As for getting slapped, well, they knocked that and me out of the park too, because it turns out that agent’s mother was not happy with me,” explained Oliver, as they cut to the slap of Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) in the WSB Port Charles bureau office on Z. Oliver screamed, “YES! It has everything! A slap, a dramatic closeup, and me doing a voice so wrong, it is genuinely embarrassing. That was my honest attempt at an American accent. I can’t tell you why it’s southern. I can only tell you I was trying my hardest.”

Photo: ABC

SECOND STOP, SALEM

Then, came John’s wrap-up of his role of Devlin St. John on Days of Our Lives, the town’s chief city water inspector. “It is on Days of Our Lives I appeared in scenes alongside soap legends like Jackée Harry (Paulina) and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie). And the Days of Our Lives team met my demands in a whole different way because instead of being an international spy boss, they wrote me a character a little more my speed.”

Cut to a clip of Oliver introducing himself as Devlin St. John to Rita. He explains, “I’m the only thing standing between this town and a catastrophic plumbing failure. A literal sewage apocalypse. They made me Salem’s Chief City Water Inspector, which let’s be honest, is perfect casting. If you’re going to bottle my essence and sell it as cologne, it would be called ‘Chief City Water Inspector.'”

DEVLIN’S WIG

The late night host also clarified all the reports, that the wig he wore for his DAYS character he actually brought from home. “Now, as for the hair, I agree, it’s absolutely incredible. It’s been reported this past week that it is a wig I brought to set from home. And while it wasn’t technically from home, we did actually provide that wig, and for good reason,” joked Oliver. “I’ve seen myself act. I knew the hair was going have to do 90% of the work. I’ll be honest, I was going for a healthy John Stamos (ex-Blackie, GH) look, but instead, it appears I ended up looking more like Tina from Bob’s Burgers.”

Photo: Corday Productions

“And if you’re wondering whether I got slapped on Days of Our Lives, not only was I slapped by a man wearing elegant silk pajamas (EJ), I also got to slap him, which felt utterly incredible. But wait, I was also stabbed with a syringe and not once, not even twice, but three different times. And if that wasn’t enough, this happened too.” At that point, Oliver played the clip of Rita using the taser on Devlin.
