All these “love” stories are like the ad– all flash no substance– so instead of mad love , it should be called sad love– because it is sad what passes for a love story on soaps today.

You hit the nail on the head. They start with potential and boom their imploding because they push it too quick. Real soap love stories take TIME. That’s why people tuned in. You kept them coming for more.

Jimmy

Exactly, that’s what happened with Laura and Kevin and it took them weeks to even discuss getting back together. They rushed their first date, getting in bed together and breaking them up, only to bring them back together after a prolonged period of time, and now… we barely see them. This pairing could be a goldmine for GH if the writers took the time to develop them and give them a real story.

Lily
Lily

Sonny and Carly all the way. I want to see them stick it out, find out what Ava did to Morgan, take creepy assed Nell down, and get back together for good. You don’t marry someone 5 times if you aren’t it for each other. They’re soul mates and need to be back together. If GH breaks them up I’m done til marriage #6.

Celia

Absolutely, Mary. You put it in the right perspective……..all minute-long love affairs.
I am just catching up with the eps; but, notice the tension between Jordan and Curtis? Please, no! …..not a very appealing thought, that. Jordan lacks what it takes to be Curtis’ woahman!!!! LOL.
What about Andre? Something about this guy is very sly….Oh, I don’t know; deceitful?
Liz and Franco make me nervous….well, HE does. I will not say yea or nay, yet.
Nelle is indescribable, and Michael’s ‘Romance Novel’ pose is a little silly……no stud, he. But, I like him.
Carly and Sonny have run ourt of hot steamy romance….too stale for me. It’s one vicious circle. They will be in rocking chairs on their front porch many years from now, false teeth clicking and whistling, making preparations for their one hundredth wedding ceremony/reception.
For whom to root….Hmmmm…..Kiki and Dillon. I would love to see this couple entangled in a love scene……but, their love must surpass all others…..everlasting.

I’ve become so invested in Franco and Elizabeth’s story. Seeing this promo made my heart leap a little, lol.

It was really well done. I hope it marks a new beginning for GH’s promo department.

I dont see a thing to look forward too…No Q’s except for traitor Micheal ‘Corinthos’ and no Laura of course…guess her romance with Kevin cant throw out enough sparks to heat up a mouse house…well. i still have my real life suspense where i will eventually become homeless and loose all my things but hey im learning to accept being a looser…it helped somewhat coming back here but i give up for good-its hard to be happy and comment when ones life is full of misery and unhappiness…too tired to fight it anymore…bye!!!!

My dear friend and I do consider you a friend even though we never met, but we have always understood each other. Unless one has face the blackness known as depression, you cannot understand how exhausting it can be– but I know because I’ve been there and many have too. And the real kick in the pants is just when you need to fight the hardest that is when all the fight is gone– so I am not going to tell you to be strong, I am going to tell go find a safe place to let go– even if haven’t sought professional help please do so, you don’t have to carry the load alone– and since you struggled with this before let me remind you– when depressed DON’T BELIEVE A SINGLE THING YOUR THOUGHTS ARE TELLING YOU– Your perceptions are being distorted by the depression you are not thinking properly. So If your thoughts are saying you are loser– don’t believe them. Don’t believe or trust any thought that is trying to drag you down– only believe thoughts that lift you up, that challenge you to be the best you can be– and the best you can be has not yet been known, and never will if you give up on him before he has a chance to grow out of you. I am praying for you Jim, don’t let the darkness win– you came through before, you will again, because THE ONLY CERTAIN THING IN LIFE IS CHANGE–nothing lasts forever, not even depression. Be good to yourself– keep posting— you are not alone

Mary…no matter what poster we agree with or have disagreed…i consider us all friends because of our one thing in common…our love for soaps…we were brought together by the brilliant Micheal Fairman with this site…we are like a family who like one minute and fight the next-like the Qs…Mary i fought depression for decades…my parents fights. my pets deaths. the loss of so many family members, i was bullied in school for 8 straight years, i was sexually assualted twice, -i could go on…my sister who nearly died and i depend on the most is often sick and battling depression herself…my father fell and bedridden now…he was supposed to have things fixed so i wouldnt have any worries but he made mistakes and if he ends up in nursing home i will loose everything-i try all contests and wasted on the lottery knowing thats a big mistake but i still wish for a miracle there even if the odds are way against me …i am disabled…i recently injured my arm and in great pain…seeing doctors and in counseling but our family has had so much going on this year ive become so stressed my blood pressure is often high and ive been warned im a stroke waiting to happened…we are working to turn things around but if we dont i give up the fight once and for all…

Jimh(leave it to beaver)
Jimh(leave it to beaver)

im starting to get more help…i swear on the Bible i do NOT want anyone to say “POOR JIM!” or anything like that…i just want people to understand what im going through and why ive been depressed…i appreciate good advice from lovely people like you…it helps more than you realize…even if it doesnt sound that way in my replies…i dont want pity…i dont want poor Jim…i went to my class reunion years ago and because im disabled afew said poor Jim because im disabled…i told them treat me like everybody else and dont invite me to your table just because im disabled but because you really want me there…after that second reply to you i did see a specialist again…a pity party is something i dont want-it just makes me feel worse…im actually feeling a little more positive today for a change!!!

Jim, the holiday season compounds depression and a sense of hopelessness.
You are not a loser–you come off as an extremely intelligent, funny and compassionate person.
The only thing I know about this thing we call human existence is that nothing stays the same forever. This too will pass, there is a solution to your problem and things will work out–they will get better.
But if you close the last chapter on your life you will never be able to see what is going to happen next. You’re not done writing the book of your life.
Don’t fold your hand.

Jimh(leave it to beaver)

there is just so much one can take…i feel there is no light at the end of the tunnel…i dont know if i want to see what happens next…things dont seem to be getting any better

Hey Jim, what city & county do you live in? I know that my city in SoCal has services where if you are disabled, you could apply for public assistance. I would start with your city then county and ask the receptionist who you can talk to. Churches usually can help too. I can do some searches for you to see if there is anything out where you live? Here are some preliminary sites that I have found?

Abruzzfan, thank you–there ARE resources out there. Mary, beautifully put.
I watched Castaway for the millionth time and Hank’s character says something profound and wise at the end.
He says,”So you gotta keep breathing because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide will bring?”

Mary SF
Mary SF

I know you have been through a lot and I am not discounting that, but the reality is the circumstances are NOT THE PROBLEM. I know it seems like that, but trust me as bad as things have been in your life I know they are others out there that have been through worse and more and they are not thinking of checking out.

It is your ability to cope, to think properly, to handle the stress that is exhausted– which is why I urge you again to seek professional medical help, not just counselling– I know it works different in the States, but in Canada you can go to any ER and be checked in to the mental health unit for at least 21 days if you are suicidal. Surely in the U.S. there are places for those with no funds to check themselves in to get the proper medical, emotional rest when they have no more inner resources to do it.

Right now if life is a marathon, then you are trying to run the race on two broken legs, and it can’t be done– you need to stop, get real medical help to rest and heal– otherwise, one more little bump in the road will do you in—so please I urge you to find a place– check in– get your mind and body rested and then tackle the issues a bit at a time. And when you are better you will be able to realistically accept the sorrow of life as part of the package along with the joys–

So I will continue to pray for you– I can’t promise it will get better, but I can promise if you embrace the sorrow as being as worthwhile as the joys of life, if you can trust there is purpose even in the pain then that is hope– and while hope exists there is a reason for you to exist– so please get medical help, so you can finish the race of life by crossing the finish line meant for you, not giving up before the race is done–

Abruzzfan

Thanks Mary & Addison. ER does sound like a good starting place since they may know all the options out there?

i think Ava will learn about Sonny and Nelle and use that to blackmail him and keep Avery…Nelle may get pregnant by Morgan but claim Sonny the poppa…

Sly

I totally agree with you about Ava blackmailing Sonny at some point, to get Avery back. I also think that Morgan is not dead. I predict that Morgan will resurface and Nelle will know all about it but not tell anyone. If you remember, before he died, Morgan and Nelle shared a kiss. As far as Nelle getting pregnant; I think she’s looking for a big payday.

Anne

Jim,

Please know many friends here are saying a prayer for you and are sending positive thoughts your way. I value your insights, so keep them coming!

My wish is that something fresh would happen with Nelle–not pregnancy with Michael, no blackmail, not being a lost child of Carly, or Jax.

Sir(Jimh),
We don’t know one another, but I just read your post and it touched me deeply. If you have tried everything else and it has All failed you – than won’t you please give Jesus a try? I mean what have you got to lose? Not making a joke there. You are in a place in your life of suffering and sadness and great stress. This will sound weird, but you are perfectly positioned for God. Jesus died for people like us. I’m not talking about religion Jim. I’m speaking of a real relationship with a real God who really loves you and has a plan for your life. Cry out to Jesus and watch Him answer you. I am not ashamed to tell you He has delivered me from some horrific things and people and situations. But that is what God does. He delivers those in need. You just need to believe He exists and ask Him to help you.
I’m praying for you and for Jesus to intervene in a mighty way in your life Jim and I believe that He will because He loves you!!!

You have just brought me to tears, Letmeatc8cake. Words to live by.

Love the story and journey Franco and Elizabeth are on! The way Griffin was positioned in the promo was less like a triangle and more like an outsider wishing to be acknowledged. Friz were fire in that promo! Carly and Sonny…I just don’t know. They were beautiful as well but they have a lot to overcome. They always come back to each other though. Curtis Jordan and Andre triangle has already started to be set up.

I’m totally on board the #GriLiz bandwagon! i’ve wanted Liz to be paired with the sexy doctor ever since he first came on board. I love their burgeoning friendship and I can definitely see it growing into a lot more, especially now that Franco has become unhinged. I’m also all for #Killion, I think they have a lot of potential . If the writers finally let them go there. I’m not happy with Curtis inserting himself between the commish and Andre as I like that pairing. i would much rather see Curtis paired up with Hayden.

I’ve found you can be happy and content even in a mouse house. Every life takes twists and turns..I’m going through some terrible mess with a neighbor but I’ve chosen to learn and grow from this instead of banging my head against a wall. The same attitude I chose whenn I was down and out at one time. You never stay down for long no matter your age or health or circumstance or family..et.al. If you give up you’ll never realize just how string you truly are..it’s easy to quit..harder to fight..but once you start fighting..you can’t be stopped.

I do not like love stories..
They are so poorly written and they bore the bejesus out of me.
Love stories are all the same, different characters.. And- the couple is doomed from the 1st kiss.

There are a very few couples that have been worth watching and they are far and inbetween.

I usually FF the couples and their lame sex and horrible dialogue.
They talk much and say little.

GH needs to go back to its’ core, its’ corner stone= Action, adventure, spies, villains, intruge, excitement, the good the bad and the ugly of GH needs to reborn.
AND- yes. Couples, adventurous couples intriguing couples, couples that have a story to tell.
GH needs to capture itself, once again.

J&S are NOT the correct writers for the great adventurous GH, a soap that was not a traditional soap.
GH was never as the other soaps until now and it is sad seeing what a pile of normal boredom stale junk it has become.

Note; it is sweeps. who knew.. Another BLAH sweeps.
((total anticlimactic ..

“OH” thank you … I realized that as well…. wouldn’t it be something… if they did in fact “leave Port Charles”

hey… this couple is in the history books… for epic fail… and .. I hate using the word.. because ones mind should never be bored.

they are the most lifeless couple… I have ever witnessed.. because of their STAR stat… who would have thunk

bye bye Billy Miller and Kelly Monaco

I may as well : GH / ABC / Disney : their is absolutely no sex appeal with Carly and Sonny.

Patrick

I am LOVING

all the posts … Franco and Liz…. IS GH / ABC / Disney going to exercise their “right” and somehow… IE: headed for disaster ? kill off Franco…

and RETURN Todd Manning ? NOW we have a direct hit on Passion. with Liz smolder

my favorite couples :

Liz and Franco ( Liz with every one ) the camera loves her
Kiki and Dillon
Olivia and Ned
Laura and Kevin
Felicia and Mac
Brad and Lucas
Valentin and Nina

this is a lot of powerhouse couples

GH : for the love of God… less is more when it comes to Sonny/Carlty; Jason/Sam

along with… Finn and Hayden; Michael/Nelle. they just do not spark.

GH hire Robert Newman, ex-Josh, GL… lets see Tracy go out with a bang. TANTALIZE

I’m so happy Griffin is being paired w/ liz, when he first came on i wanted him to notice her, and then they got him involved w/ Maxie, wtf, the only thing i like about that was seeing him and Nate , i double my drooling, lol, then they paired liz w/ Franco, i didn’t like that, i like franco, love RH, but hate the characters back story, but RH and Rebecca had so much chemistry that i now like franco and liz, but not against a triangle w/ Griffin, good for her. thank goodness they got boring jason out of her orbit . It was badly written story especially how he easily just gave up on liz, so good riddance , he can have Sam.

Patrick
Patrick

“…, i double my drooling, ”

TOO funny

yeah, i’d hate to see Griffin on the losing end… when .. i’m with you… when Griffin first debuted… it seemed like a shoe in… the dr. and the nurse… as it were.

dang it tho… because I love Roger Howarth acting… AS TODD… I would be moving heaven nd earth… to see Todd and Liz. but the magic stirred with Grffin.

yet… I liked the passion with Claudette and Griffin. argh!

now that OLTL and AMC rights are back @ABC. will they kill of Franco and bring back Todd ? which… in the back of my mind… am already thinking… they would TRY and pair Todd with Carly ? hence… the trio… that Griffin and Liz will

argh! I hate the obvious propping by the behind the scenes

Carly, Sonny, Jason, Sam, Finn, Hayden, do not make GH… they are wasting this show

Celia
Celia

I agree…..no triangle, please. This rapist come back to hsunt Lizzie bothers me, though. Now, there’s the potential that he’s set his sights on Kiki. What will happen when Franco finds out? Is this the point? To make Franco a maniac again?
Aria, I hope I can say this (since it’s out of context)……congratulations!!!!! You were right about Charlotte being Lulu’s. You were the first to call it ( as I said Valentin was the father) and then, everyone followed suit.
How did thst happen? I can’t remember who; but a fellow-poster mentioned that maybe Valentin is really Stavros?

Jimmy
Jimmy

I might be in the minority but I really like Liz and Franco. He’s much more down to Earth and tolerable when he’s with Liz as opposed to Nina or even Carly. I don’t want to see them torn apart, especially not by Dr. Snoozefest. I like Griffin as a character but I don’t want to see him in this storyline. I’d say bring Claudette back because I think it would be really juicy to see her, Griffin and Valentin interact. Plus, Bree Williamson stole the scene time and time again, and I think they can really turn the character around. Speaking of Valentin, I’m actually excited to see what he has planned, especially with Anna. I’m not sure what the connection is there, but that is an interesting avenue for the show to explore. Also, I think a Nina/Valentin pairing could be really interesting, and hopefully it will integrate Nina into the show more. She’s been here for a year and a half and still feels so out of place, which is sad because I love Michelle Stafford. The Curtis/Jordan/Andre story couldn’t be of less interest for me, since two of the three characters are ones I really dislike. The only decent character for me is Curtis, and it’s pretty clear that he and Jordan will eventually hook up. As for Andre, he could leave tomorrow and I wouldn’t notice or care, and he can take Valerie with him. I’m not so sure that Carly and Sonny will weather this storm. Even if Sonny wasn’t responsible for the bomb in Julian’s car (since there was no way they would make anything stick on Sonny and have him actually pay for a crime), Carly is finally realizing that the very fact this could have been a possibility is enough for her to walk away. And honestly, it’s time. Sonny really needs to change his ways and finally leave the business behind. Maxie and Nathan are extremely boring and their wedding is being treated as an afterthought. The fact that Dante and Lulu can get engaged and remarried within a week but “Naxie” has had to wait months and have constant setbacks show how much the writers care about them. And honestly, I don’t care much for them either because I really don’t like Nathan. Kiki and Dillon are also a couple I don’t care for because both characters are really boring. I’m not a fan of Robert Palmer Watkins’ portrayal of Dillon and I’ve disliked Kiki from when Kristen Alderson played the role, but at least she was more tolerable and a better actress than Hayley Erin. As for Nelle and Michael… I like the possibility. Michael needs a new woman, but I feel like he’s going to get hurt in the end by Nelle’s secret agenda. I’m not sure what she’s up to, but seeing her in bed with Sonny the other day was absolutely gross, even if they didn’t do the deed. It better not come to that.… Read more »

this thing about… Anna… the high yield she turns in… time after time… riveting.. the best out their…

Though I like Griffin, I don’t want to see him paired with Liz. I like her with Franco.

I like Maxie and Nathan together but wish their wedding would be given more than the five minutes it’s going to be given between now and New Year’s Day. There is so much character-driven material between the two characters for the writers to mine if they’d just stop and think about it for a minute.

Totally dislike the idea of Michael getting involved with someone like Nelle who’s only going to break his heart for the millionth time.

I like Dillon and Kiki together but am just not wild about the actress now playing Kiki. I miss KA.

Love Hayden and Finn together.

Jordan, Curtis and Andre just hasn’t snagged me. Andre and Jordan are together in one scene, fighting in the next, back together in the third. I don’t find a lot of rooting power in the way it’s being written or find a lot of chemistry between them. On the other hand, Curtis just seems to smolder with anyone he’s playing opposite. Still, Jordan isn’t given must to do other than make police mistakes and say “baby” all the time. The writers need to spruce this storyline up.

Sonny and Carly are couple I don’t find very interesting other than enjoying how they used to always be there for each other. I thought that was realistic and made me root for them. Other than those types of scenes, I find them a snooze fest.

Julian and Alexis have been so shredded that I don’t want them back together. I just don’t see a realistic, believable way for her to forgive him for what he’s done to her. Hitting him with her car is not reason enough. They need to move on, as in Julian needs to leave town. Maybe he can take boring Sam and Jason with him.

And speaking of Juian’s kids, where the heck was Lucas in all the Morgan drama? We saw Brad but Carly never mentioned her brother once. That stinks! They had a lot more story to be told.

Love Laura and Kevin together. Hope that continues to be taken slowly (which does not equal not being on the screen).

Love Lulu and Dante together, though hated their five second wedding.

Love the idea of Ned and Olivia together, though we never see them together.

Just some thoughts….

If you’re very invested in Franco and Liz you might want to prepare yourself as she draws closer to Griffin…he’s the calm to Franco’s storm…

As much as I love all the characters on GH, I do have to admit that some of the characters in these planned love stories and triangles don’t bear all that much weight so it makes it tough for me to get excited over some of the action coming our way. I guess if it is well written and well acted it might get me to sit up and take notice but for right now, the story that seems to want me to tune in most would be the Michael/Nelle story.

Hi again Jim…I wrote u a looooong message yesterday then my iPad promptly switched off the page in a whole bunch of wonky moves before I could send it. Needless to say the messsge went into oblivion. Dropped it numerous times before I got a case…and to say it’s malfunctioning is an understatement. So, here goes…No one can tell you it’s definitely going to get better because none of us know that about anyone’s life, or our own lives…some things are in our control and some things not. But I HOPE that all of your woes will come to a happier, or a best a best-as-possible solution. That old saying is very true, ” if you have your health you have everything…” so work on that physically and mentally as best you can. If your meds aren’t working, like our GH real and fictional characters, tell your doctor. As you know, better than anyone, they can adjust your dosage and try another med if necessary. Alsio, have your Vitamin D level checked; if it’s too low that can cause or add to depression. You might benefit from a supplement, especially if you don’t go out often and are not exposed to the sun. The studies on Viamin D vary but I once got a ten day dose because I was too low…and, lol, after taking it I felt high! And I wasn’t depressed before! Try to get out to support groups or find one online. As for your dad if he’s a vet you can apply for VA benefits. If approved it’s over $1000 a month…that’s if he stays home. It’s called the aid and attendance benefit…you can find a local VA center who will help u fill out the forms. If you have lived in your father’s house for two years or more and have taken care of him in any capacity, you won’t be kicked out even if he has to go to a nursing home ..if you feel he’s done something to put the home in jeopardy go to legal aide; it’s free. As for your sister, that”s scary and depressing, even uf u werent bipolar. Just hang in there…just be your loving self and again…hope for the best. Life, unfortunately. Is excruciatingly sorrowful at times…none of us can escape that.. I met an old man who had been injured at war. He was in a wheelchair…his advice to me when things get tough…”never surrender.” 🙂

Jimh(leave it to beaver)
Jimh(leave it to beaver)

Ive taken care of my late mother, raised a niece and kept social services from taking her away(her mother is learning disabled) and i have been taking care of my father but if he stays in nursing home the money he promised me to keep up the house or for moving will be gone for his care…and it could leave me homeless…i might be able to get an apartment but there wont be room to keep my family mementos and my cat because most places here dont take animals-and loosing my cat would be like loosing yet another family member-we lost over 2 dozen family members and friends since 1997…me and my sister are suppose to meet with a lawyer but she is often very sick(she nearly died months ago) that we had to miss our appointment…hopefully she is well when we try again next week…we have had a horrible year that its getting hard to take even with counseling

It’s time for Sonny to be alone and get out of the mob. Sory. Nothing sexy about a criminal and a killer. Since he owns a “coffee distribution” business one would have to guess he sells drugs or weapons. Or he extorts money from innocent souls. What else could it be? Even on the Sopranos we know what he did and he was no sex symbol.

As for the other stories, if the writer could write beyond a commercial break we could have some fun here but sadly he can’t so the Franco story will be a dumb and NELLE will be a Saint in the end of hers

I love Friz. I think they have enough angst on their own without Elizabeth being thrown into yet another triangle. I’ve been tired of the formulaic writing on GH for the past decade or so which is whtky I fell so hard for Friz. I love complicated couples but when you add in the unbelievable chemistry that Roger Howarth & Rebecca Herbst have? It has the potential to become an epic love story. We haven’t had one of those in GH in such a long time, I hope they don’t ruin it for more lather, rinse, repeat storytelling.

Be bold for once GH! Follow the chemistry & see where it takes you…

Love Carson and Killon!

I am gonna reserve judgment on Nelle and Michael till it’s we know for certain they are not related, and till her motives are revealed concerning why she targeting Carly and Sonny, but overall I think it could be a interesting pairing.

Liz and Franco are challenging Kiki and Morgan as my least favorite couple of 2016 but hopefully Griffin can put an end to this farce. Curtis, Jordan, and Andre as a triangle aren’t on enough to get me to care. I have always said that Maxie is way too feisty and charismatic to continue to get stuck with the boring and stoic Nathan.

to get stuck with the boring stoic Nathan.

I like Roger Howarth. However, I have never liked the continuing and evolving saga of Franco. GH is still berst show until Sussman and Alden take over YR.

However, I would not even blink if Greenlee- Light and Franco slipped out of Port Charles. i am ready for Jax and Alcazar to return on perm basis.

As much as I like Billy Miller. The story of Jake/Jason has been a clunker. No one can replace Steve Burton as Jason. Sure the character needs to be more 3 dimensional – but GH is not the same without Jason. I miss Sonny and Jason… new stories to tell. More depth of character to be sure… but even a recurring Jason played by Steve Burton is better than no Jason. I have no idea of how to handle Jake. Love Billy Miller – so talented – but this Jake/Jason tale has been a snoozefest. The actor and audience deserve better in this case.

I think she and Griffin will have sparks flying off of the screen! Looking forward to it. In a big way!

General Hospital

GH’s Roger Howarth Chats On Shifting From Franco To Drew & The Stunning Story Twist

In one of the most intriguing plots of 2019, General Hospital’s Franco Baldwin was morphed into Navy SEAL Andrew Cain following a harrowing mind-mapping procedure. In all went down thanks to Shiloh (Coby Ryan McLaughlin) and Dr, Cabot (Time Winters), taking the life and memories of Drew (Billy Miller) from his flash drive and transferring them into Franco’s brain, wiping out his past and his present.  That followed the tearjerker moment, when Franco sacrificed himself to free his kidnapped stepson, Cameron (William Lipton) from the twisted procedure; that could have left the teenager with Drew’s memories or even in a vegetative state.

The recipient of this storyline – and who would be taking on another persona in his storied daytime drama career – is none other than Roger Howarth.  The Daytime Emmy- winning actor is no stranger to changing fictional identities on GH.  Howarth, played OLTL’s Todd Manning over in Port Charles, later switching to Franco (previously played by James Franco) following the legal dispute between ABC and Prospect Park.

Last week, viewers got their first glimpse of Howarth taking on the traits of Drew circa 2012, and in short order, it has caused emotional upheaval for Franco’s wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), Drew himself, Jason (Steve Burton), and Kim (Tamara Braun)… and that’s just for starters.

Michael Fairman TV chatted with Roger as he started his journey transforming his work from playing Franco to Drew and the challenges it presents, plus the ripple effect the change will have on the canvas for many of the characters.  In addition for One Life to Live fans, Roger chats about his appreciation for his time on that iconic series in a candid, self-effacing, and special conversation.  Here’s what Howarth shared:

Courtesy/ABC

When you were told that they were going to put Drew’s memories into Franco, what was your initial reaction to learning that news?  Did you think it was a great twist?

ROGER:  Yeah, I think it’s a great idea.  I really do.  Good story needs a lot of things, and this checks a lot of the boxes.  It brings people together; it provides obstacles.  There are a lot of places this could lead to.  I just think it’s really smart and interesting.  I look forward to it a lot, and I can already tell by what I have shot thus far that it’s going to be fun.

If this story is written well, what has happened to Franco will be life-altering and crucial to so many people’s lives in Port Charles.

ROGER:  What I like about it, and this isn’t lip service, is that it’s a great story because it affects a lot of people.  Those are the good stories.  Elizabeth has got to deal with this, the boys have to deal with this, Scotty’s (Kin Shriner) got to deal with it, Jason is confused by this information, and now this person in interacting with Drew, and Kim, and Shiloh.  All of the sudden, the canvas is interacting completely differently.  So, I think the writers are having fun with this as well.

Photo: ABC

Then, there is also the character of Kim played by Tamara Braun, who Drew shares a past with.  It will be interesting to see how that relationship plays out, we already witnessed Franco’s Drew instantly smitten and attracted to her.

ROGER:  Yes, the person in this body is running under a certain set of assumptions that no one else shares.  So, yes, it’s confusing to everybody, I am sure, including Kim.

Do you see Franco eventually flipping back and forth, and having personality traits of both he and Drew?

ROGER:  No.  One hundred percent, no, and that provides a real obstacle with a couple like Franco and Elizabeth.  They are always looking for obstacles to prove to the audience that these two people really do care about one another, and that’s the purpose of a story like this.  I’m guessing and hoping that it will provide the character of Elizabeth with a particular objective because it would be nice to see Becky be able to play all of those beats.

Right, and to have to fight for something…

ROGER:  Yes, it’s very tragic.  This is a character that is accustomed to tragedy, and to see Becky play the role of Elizabeth dusting herself off, trying to get what she wants is going to be really cool.

Courtesy/ABC

The tragic twist had Franco saving Cameron from winding up with Drew’s memories and being the vessel for Shiloh to use.  What did you think about how Franco sacrificed himself in order to protect Elizabeth’s son?  It was quite heroic.

ROGER:  I think the other beautiful part of this is that this was motivated by love.  I don’t see it as heroic.  I think as an actor, you’re always looking for the heart of the story, and the writers made it really simple.  He does this because he loves this kid.  Yeah, they’ve had their ups and downs, and they are struggling to figure out how they can get along, and they have a lot of things that they feel about one another, but push actually did come to shove, and I think that the character of Cameron is going to be deeply affected by that.

Courtesy/ABC

This now puts Franco deep within Shiloh’s storyline and past with Drew, because Shiloh desperately wants a key piece of information locked in Drew’s memories.  So, in theory, this kind of ranks among one of the better stories you’ve probably ever gotten to tell in your daytime career.  Everyone is hoping that it lives up to its expectations in the execution of it on-air.

ROGER:  It is certainly a high concept story.  It’s asking a lot of the audience.  So far, we’re all in.  It’s a good cast.  I work with really good actors, so I’m not worried.  It is asking the audience to suspend disbelief for sure.  The good stories do.  I think Erika Slezak (Viki) on One Life to Live, getting to play Dissociative Identity Disorder as Niki and Viki that was a large ask.  She never blinked.  She did everything that was asked.  I’m trying to follow her example.

Exactly, and she played more characters.  She had more alters after that.

ROGER:  (Laughs)  Yeah!  She’s better at this than I am.  I’m having trouble with the one. (Laughs)

Photo: ABC

What do you think about how Scott and Franco’s relationship will be affected, now that he is in essence “Drew”?

ROGER:  There’s no part of that relationship that hasn’t changed because there is no Franco.  Franco is not around … Franco has left the building.

He is a completely new person for all intent and purposes.

ROGER:  For sure.  This soldier doesn’t appreciate being called by somebody else’s name.  He is not compassionate to the people who mistake him for this somewhat tortured art therapist that he no longer is.

Photo: ABC

What is also interesting is that this should put you right into conflict and scenes with Steve Burton, because now you are essentially playing Jason’s twin.

ROGER:  Yes.  For me, as an actor, to get a chance to work with Steve, and to play a like-minded person, is intimidating frankly, but it’s exciting.

Also, the audience knows how Franco and Jason are such enemies, and now, he is really in his mind his twin.

ROGER:  Yeah, Franco sees in many shades of gray and other colors, and from what I can tell, Franco as Drew sees the world much simpler.  He thinks more clearly, he finishes his sentences, he thinks before he speaks, he knows what he is going to say.  His point of view does not waiver.  He is determined.

Courtesy/ABC

That’s got to be so exciting for you to get to play after all of Franco’s psychological baggage and issues.

ROGER:  I’ve got to say, it’s been a bit of a challenge for me to play someone with a different set of speech patterns and who stands differently.  Because Drew thinks and feels differently about everything; his body is the same, but his body is behaving differently, and it speaks differently, and he thinks at a different tempo.  They’ve been very patient on set giving me chances to do it badly, so far. (Laughs)  It’s not uncommon for me to get halfway through a scene and to have to start over.   I am essentially figuring it out as we go along.   I am very appreciative of the fact that they have been giving me a few extra takes to try and figure out how this guy stands.  He relates to people with a different set of space and time.  It’s cool.  It’s a cool set of puzzles.  It’s been really fun.  I’m a lucky guy.

When I first learned of the story twist, I was like, “Oh! Roger will be great in this.”

ROGER:  I don’t know, man.  I could be stinking it up pretty badly. (Laughs)  I think there’s a trap as an actor who has been asked to play twins, and the trap is that this guy is only acting the way that he acts.  The trap is frankly to act too much because the audience is being told that he is a different person.  If I go too far to try to demonstrate that he is a different person, then it slips into parody or overacting.  Over the years, I have definitely been guilty of overacting, so, I’m a little frightened of it. (Laughs)  I don’t like the way it feels.  I know how it feels to go too far.  I have been getting notes like, “You could pull it back a little bit.”  (Laughs)  It’s pretty funny.

Courtesy/ABC

In the past, I have heard you say you’d rather go to work and feel unsettled about what you are asked to play.  Does that still hold true?

ROGER:  For sure!  I’d rather go to work and leave my job knowing that it was terrible and that I get to come back the next day and make it a little better.  The best thing about daytime is how much it will stretch you and pull you and ask as much of it as you are willing to put in.

Now speaking of Franco, what did you think about the wedding reception on the yacht with Elizabeth?  Did you think that was a nice payoff for Friz fans?

ROGER:  Yes, for sure.  I thought it was a really sweet culmination to a sweet story about these two people finding one another.  I’m glad they incorporated a large part of the cast.  It was a really good idea.

Photo: ABC

What did you think of how all of Elizabeth’s boys (Cameron, Aiden and Jake) performed a song for Franco and their mom at the reception, and how Franco relates to all of them?

ROGER:  I think it was a really important story point, and it was nice, and it was easy to play.  They’re really good kids, and they’re also terrific people.

Franco really stepped up as a stepdad to Aiden, who had been bullied at school.  I loved the cooking scene, where Franco was baking with Aiden.  What do you think about their relationship?  I love that Franco is being very understanding.

ROGER:  I think he’s trying to be understanding.  I don’t think he’s really great at it.   I think he’s a human being just trying to figure out how to make the best use of his time here, just like the rest of us.

Photo” ABC

General Hospital needed a big jolt with an umbrella story like this that turns the canvas a bit upside down.  How does it feel to be at the epicenter of it?

ROGER:   I really don’t think I’m the center of the story.  I’m not even kidding.  The story is that this piece of information is worn on the shoulders of Franco, but the people who are most effected by that piece of information are Kim and Elizabeth.

It will be interesting to see what the reaction is like from the GH audience.  You’re not on social media.  Will you check out what they are saying … or the feedback?

ROGER:  I’m not on social media.  But, I believe there is a guy whose job it is to track that initial criticism/support.  I think it is kind of cool that we will get real-time reviews, you know what I mean?  I actually thought about that because with the character of Franco, it took us a while to figure out who the guy was.  There was a lot of blonde hair and some missed cues, and we weren’t sure which relationship would be featured, whether it would be Franco and Ava (Maura West), or whether he would wind up in Carly’s (Laura Wright) arena again.  It took a while to figure out the best way to put that guy in the canvas, and I imagine that it will happen again.  I didn’t dye my hair for this, but I did cut it. (Laughs)

How was working with Billy Miller in this storyline twist?  Were you there on his last day on set?

ROGER:  Yes, I worked with Billy not on his last day, but on his last show.  He was remarkable with dignity and with class, and I wish him all the best.  He did a great job.  He is a good actor.  I’m sure he will find somewhere to go be an actor.

Throughout your soap career, has there been a story that you initially pooh-poohed, but when you did it, you thought, “Oh, this is great!”

ROGER:   There was a story when Carly and Franco were together, and they wrote a story where Franco gave Carly a gift that wound up being a camera…

Photo: ABC

The evil-eye necklace!

ROGER:  Yes, this small seeing rye.  I just thought, every time Franco would come in and say something like, “Oh, you’re wearing the necklace.  It’s so beautiful,” while we were doing it, I was like, “Wow.  The audience is really going to hate this.” (Laughs)  However, my real-time Twitter is the subway, and while it was airing, I got on the train and sat next to this really amazing fan, who just told me how much she loved that story, and I was honestly surprised and pleased.  I am often wrong, and it doesn’t surprise me now when I am wrong  … because I was really wrong then.

You mentioned Franco with Ava which was a potential pairing. I think you and Maura West have always had great chemistry together on screen.

ROGER:  Yes, she’s a pretty great actor.  She’s great with everybody.

She is.  You knew Maura’s work first when she was at As the World Turns, while you were there, also?

ROGER:  I didn’t know her well at As the World Turns, but I knew who she was.  She’s a hard worker, and Jack (Michael Park) and Carly always had a lot to do.  She was pretty focused when she was there, but I spoke to her.  I didn’t feel like I got to know her until I got to work with her on GH.

Photo: JPI

Last month on July 15th would have been the 51st anniversary of One Life to Live. I saw a lot of people commenting and remembering the show on social media that day. I put together four photos on a post I made about that show featuring some of the remarkable actors who were a part of it.  From there, I received hundreds of comments of how people were just missing the series, the characters, and actors they loved in it, including you.  When you look at the list of people from yourself to Judith Light, to Robin Strasser, Bob Woods, and of course Erika Slezak – it’s such an unbelievably talented group who spent time in Llanview.  Do you ever think about what an incredible experience that was, and how the fans still miss that show so much?

ROGER:  All the time.  I mean, I’m a lucky guy.  I think it really was a special building to work in, and the people who we are talking about: Erika (Viki), Bob (Bo), Robin (Dorian), and Phil Carey (Asa), and Clint Richie (Clint), and John Loprieno (Cord), the people who made it possible for me to work there set an environment and a tone that made it a really special place.  It was a really good cast, like you said, and there was a lot of opportunity for them to write a really cool story.  I wasn’t a part of the AIDS quilt storyline, but to realize that they told a story like that and incorporated that into our show was wonderful.

Photo: JPI

Such an amazing story and One Life was telling socially relevant and important issues of our time, always.

ROGER:  I can’t say for certain, but I do believe that the original concept of the Todd, Marty (Susan Haskell), and Powell (Sean Moynihan) storyline was kind of supposed to be initially an effort to bring awareness to a horrible, violent crime.  That was a long time before the #MeToo movement.  I think it was a show where the writers had a social conscious as well and really brought awareness to a lot of different things.  That’s a great legacy and something that show should be very proud of.

Once the character of  Todd Manning took off on One Life, and how they found ways to redeem him, and how it spoke to how much the network, the show, and the audience responded to your performances, did you ever feel you had a bit of a safety net as an actor, or were you like, “I’m going to be fired tomorrow?”

ROGER:  This is truth: I am so grateful to have a job, and I don’t take anything for granted.  I don’t think anybody is safe in this business.  I just don’t.  I just don’t think anybody gets to say that they’ve arrived.  I just did a roundtable, and I shared this with people who have a lot more clout and opportunity than I do – that actors are by nature, the good ones, are aware that every day that you get to go to work is a privilege, and don’t waste it.

Photo: JPI

In soaps, for the most part, when someone is stepping into someone else’s role as a recast, or actor who played one role is changing to another, there seems to be this reactionary period of adjustment, and then, there is acceptance from the audience over time … unless you really stink it up  … as you say. (Laughs)

ROGER:  Here’s the thing, and this is why I think this is such a great idea, it’s not about me playing this part, it’s about how Elizabeth, who has been on this show for twenty-something years gets to react to it, and giving her the ball.  It’s flashy that Franco is Drew, but it is really and Elizabeth/Kim story.  I may be the one overacting and stinking it up, but it’s theirs. Do you know what I mean?  It’s not my story.

Photo/ABC

What do you want to say to the fans about this new “role” you are taking on at General Hospital?

ROGER:  I want to say that I really do appreciate the fans.  Here is the thing, they’re down for everything.  I hope they’re down for this.  It’s a big ask, but I really hope that they like it.

So, what do you think of Roger as Andrew Cain thus far and how the storyline is beginning to take shape?  Are you excited to see how Franco becoming Drew (through the mind-mapping procedure) shakes up the canvas? Do you hope Drew returns to be Franco sooner than later? Share your thoughts and theories via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Franco Looks In The Mirror … And Believing He Is Drew Kisses Kim

This week on General Hospital, viewers have seen that when Franco (Roger Howarth) awoke from his mind-mapping implantation  (thanks to Shiloh and Dr Cabot) he woke up saying that he is “Drew Cain”.  Thus, as far we know, Franco now carries the life and memories of Drew from 2012 and back, and as of now, has no trace of Franco’s memories.

When Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) and Drew (Billy Miller) try to make Franco understand in his confusion what transpired,  Liz brings a mirror to Franco to see his face, which makes this all the more terrifying for him.  Liz insists to him that she is wife, but he tells her that he is sorry but he does not recognize her.  Franco insists he is going to leave town and Drew asks him to please stay put, as Liz promises that they can reverse what happened to him.  But can Liz really promise that?

Later, Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) fills Sam (Kelly Monaco) and Jason (Steve Burton) in on what happened and how Franco now was implanted with Drew’s memories, which leaves them stunned.  That means Franco, who is one of the people Jason loathes most in the world – now believes he is Jason’t twin brother.

Meanwhile, as Kim (Tamara Braun) and Julian (William deVry) prepare to leave Port Charles for Manhattan and start live anew, (so Kim can not be haunted by her life in Port Charles from the recent death of her son, Oscar) things are about to make a shocking turn … for her.

Back at GH, Liz is upset when Franco decides he must get out of his hospital room.  Liz is scared he will just skip town knowing he feels he has no ties there.  Drew reassures her that because he is a version of him, the pull will be way too strong for him to exit Port Charles.

Kim is now at the hospital getting ready to turn in her resignation letter and runs into Franco.  He recognizes her and calls her “Kim!” You can tell he is quite smitten with her.  Kim is not sure why Franco is acting that way.  She announces she is leaving Port Charles to which he says he is going to come with her. She sees he has a hospital ID bracelet on, so she thinks something has happened.  Just then, Franco tells her about the first time Drew Cain and her met up! This shocks Kim  … and the next thing you know … he moves in for a major kiss and lip-lock as Drew and Liz look on.

Constance Towers Returns To GH As Helena Cassadine … But Just How Does She Appear?

Now, any General Hospital fan knows that if there is skullduggery and evil going down, Helena Cassadine (whether dead or alive) is usually somehow involved when it comes to the lives of certain people in Port Charles.

And … some major storyline news from TV Line reveals that on next Monday’s August 19th episode of the ABC soap opera, Constance Towers reprises her role as the evil one herself … Helena!

Apparently, look for Helena to appear in a flashback with none other than Shiloh (Coby Ryan McLaughlin) and about Drew Cain’s time in Afghanistan.  That scene might hold a key to just what Shiloh wants now that he has implanted Drew’s memories into Franco (Roget Howath), thanks to Dr. Cabot’s work.  But could what is revealed also relate to the story that will see Billy Miller (Drew) exit the canvas later this month? Stay tuned.

Viewers last saw Helena alive in story until November of 2016, but then she was part of Jake’s hallucinations that were a part of the chimera storyline that climaxed at the Nurses’ Ball back in May of 2017.

So what do you think Helena’s presence in a flashback will reveal? And, who is ultimately having that flashback? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.
