NY Post: Oprah's OWN Decision To Carry AMC & OLTL Is Low-Risk High-Yield!

Courtesy/TOLN

Courtesy/TOLN

Since Oprah Winfrey’s OWN cable network announced their “Summer Fling with the Soaps”, which means, starting Monday July 15th fans can see the  first 40 episodes of All My Children and One Life to Live produced by Prospect Park and TOLN, there has been a lot of talk as to why now would Oprah take on the soaps, when she wouldn’t before.

As fans of AMC and OLTL know, the first 40 episodes will be rebroadcast over the summer by OWN starting from episode number one of both shows.

The New York Post weighed-in on this summer acquisition by OWN stating in their headline that the decision to air the soaps both are low-risk and high-yield for Oprah’s network who has struggled at times to find an identity and a hit.  Now with the success of Tyler Perry’s nighttime soap airing on OWN, The Haves and the Have Nots, AMC and OLTL are poised to be a hit as well.

New York Post’s Michael Starr said this about the move to bring AMC and OLTL on for the summer:  ” OWN cable network’s deal to air repeats of online-only soaps All My Children and One Life to Live is a savvy business decision.    Not only will it return both soaps to “mainstream” TV — albeit cable, and only for a limited run — but it will likely draw more eyeballs to OWN, which has made some viewership strides of late but is still struggling to forge an identity in the crowded cable landscape. “

Starr also noted the demise of SOAPnet being an opportunity for OWN to strike and bring other soaps over to the fold: “It’s also interesting to note that Disney/ABC-owned SoapNet, which aired reruns of both AMC and OLTL when they aired on the corporate mothership, is struggling — and has lost carriage on many cable and satellite providers who’ve opted instead for Disney Junior as the once-powerful daytime soap genre continues to shrink (only four soaps remain on NBC, ABC and CBS).   Now OWN can tap into that niche, as well.”

NOTE:  The NY Post article is not clear on one thing:  Disney/ABC decided to drop SOAPNet and replace it with Disney Junior.   So the cable providers were offered that.   Many cable providers did not want to drop SOAPnet in the first place, which is one of the reasons some cable providers still continued to air SOAPnet.

So what do you think AMC and OLTL fans? Savvy business move on OWN’s part to bring All My Children and One Life to Live into their programming block? Do you want OWN to also acquisition General Hospital and Days of our Lives from SOAPnet too?  Will you be tuning into watch AMC and OLTL so we can show OWN that soap fans will drive up their networks ratings? Share your thoughts below!

Well I am excited that Oprah is doing this even if it is the 1st 40 episodes. I am caught up on both soaps so I won’t re-watch but my hope that if it does well then I can continue to watch it on her network going forward. I currently have huluplus and it would be nice not to pay the $7.99 month to watch my revived soaps. I am thinking that if it does well maybe Oprah will pick them up. So we all need to support this. Forget about what she said in the past and let’s move… Read more »

The only way these shows have any chance at all to get an extended run on OWN is if AMC & OLTL bring in really big numbers. That will NOT happen unless ALL fans tune in…whether or not you’ve seen it first run you really NEED to be watching when these shows air on OWN! This “Summer Fling” is probably a trial run and if they don’t get enough people watching you can rest assured that Ms. Winfrey will pull the plug and they will NEVER air permanently. PLEASE WATCH!

I agree – PLEASE WATCH!!! Even tho’ I watch OLTL online I’m going to tune in to OWN to convey my hopes that she’ll carry them in the future. Hope this helps her and so glad Disney is feeling unloved-lol!!! ABC/D sucks!

Agreed JoAnn. Just keep the TV on in the background on OWN at the right times, even if you don’t watch it.

I’ll watch on OWN in hopes ANOTHER cable channel outbids OWN for the permanent rights to show the soap re-runs. If ABC had any sense they’d run the soaps on.. wait for it.. SOAPNET!!!! But they are so busy trying to prove to the world the soap genre is dead, they aren’t going to do that. TVGN seems like they want to be a player with the recent acquisition of YR re-runs.

Don’t you think that Oprah would have a much better idea of how well soaps would do on her Own Network if she aired up to date soaps? All soap fans are caught up on soaps and will have no reason to watch the reruns. She will have no idea how powerful fans are.

I don’t want to watch repeats.. If she aired the new and up to date episodes then
you would get a lot more viewers.. That’s what I think,

She has no choice. PP is contractually obligated NOT to run them simultaeously on American TV until September (remember, they got all the unprecedented pay cuts and discounts with the actors and the crews based on the fact that they were a Web only series in America). This is likely a way to see if there is enough interest before Oprah decides if she wants to be first in the ring come September when PP has the ability to find a TV home in the U.S. That is, I assume, when their exclusive deal runs out with Hulu…who now has… Read more »

But all fans are NOT caught up. There are lots of people like my mom who do not have high speed internet access and some don’t have computers at all. My mother is thrilled at this opportunity to be able to watch OLTL on TV again.

You don’t need to pay $7.99 for Hulu+ unless you watch by phone or tablet. Simply enter the name of the show in the search and save it.
When you’re ready to watch:click on “More” and then “Shows You Watch”.
A list of favorite shows will appear. Click on a show(AMC,for example)
An “Episodes” tab will appear with a number in parenthesis indicating number of eps available(number varies online or by phone/tablet.) Hope that helps.

You don’t have to pay the $7.99 a month..You can watch them on regular Hulu for FREE! Huluplus is the one you have to pay but again not on the regular Hulu.. This is for Lisa M.

I was excited to see Oprah is now carrying these shows. However, trying to watch them is very difficult. They are showing them out of sequence and also have back to back episodes of the exact same show. In order for this to work they need to be show in the correct order.

I’m glad OWN is finally coming to their senses. I think that bringing on the soaps will be a good thing for them (like the fans said when they begged Oprah to take them on last year!) Not a fan of Oprah but I will watch while the shows are on even though I’ve already seen. I am in an area that has not had SoapNet in forever so if they brought other soaps on board I would watch too. Personally I think it can only help her network.

I just could not get use to watching Soaps on a computer, watched part of the first episode and shut it off. I am so happy Oprah decided to air AMC & OLTL, a very smart move on her part. I know there will be lots of very happy Soap fans. Thanks Oprah!!

won’t watch. I have no problem watching them on Hulu and I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction of adding to her billioin dollar plus empire. she could have aired these from the beginning and chose not to. The New York Post didn’t write anything that a lot of us already realized; she’s running them at low risk to her and with a potential of great risk to her ratings Therefore, she built the Oprah show on network TV because of her huge fan base…got incredibly rich off of it…abandoned the same fans when she wouldn’t revive the soaps…now is counting… Read more »

Hopefully at some point if that is the case they will air the shows at night. That is when I was able to catch the soaps. I work all day and am only able to catch them at night. Right now I am only watching OLTL on Hulu early in the morning (4:30am) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I know I can watch them anytime but those days worked well for me. This is an experiment. Oprah will have to see if AMC & OLTL do as well in the ratings like The Haves and the Have Nots. I think AMC & OLTL owe a debt of gratitude for the success of Tyler Perry on OWN. Also, let’s not forget that Oprah is a longtime AMC fan too! I am sure she was diappointed over the show’s cancellation on ABC. Her initial decision not to pick up AMC and OLTL was a business decision. Not that she see the possibility of success with it, she has remembered those shows and their respective… Read more »

I love the idea of available online first and then on OWN. I also think that OWN should acquire the broadcasting rights for Crystal Chappells online only shows. Her new series, Beacon Hill has 3 time Emmy winner Sarah Brown leading the cast.

I‘m sure there are many gay cable channels that would gladly acquire the rights to all of Crystal Chappell‘s gay-themed shows. I don‘t think that is a market Oprah is looking to tap into. Not exactly her core audience.

I use to like Oprah. I watched her show every day. As her success grew, so did her arrogance. I am not mad at her about the soaps because she just made a business decision. Whatever we say about Oprah, she is not stupid in business. Back when the shows were cancelled off ABC, people asked her to take them on. That would have been a HUGE, billion dollar investment to assume production of two entire shows that had just been cancelled. Her network was brand new then, and more than fledgling. It was too big of a risk. Now, when she has the chance to air pre-packaged, already produced shows that she has SEEN are getting high numbers elsewhere…she can swoop in and look like a soap saving hero. And she has….with her boisterous,… Read more »

Pride Month Celebrating LGBTQ+ Soap Supercouples: Nuke, Kish, Otalia & WilSon … Which Stands the Test of Time?

June is Pride Month, the time when across the U.S and the world there are celebrations and commemorations to recognize all who identify as LGBTQ and their allies.

Daytime soap operas have had a rocky road when it comes to the representation of same-sex couples.  The soaps have been at one time leaders in portraying key social issues of our time, as well as treading lightly on other subjects, as to its concerns to ‘turn-off’ its core audiences.

When you look back at the groundbreaking first same-sex weddings, and the first gay kiss, the soaps have come far in some ways in their representations of gay characters, but there is always work to be done to serve and to shed light on the under-represented.

As we reflect back to the then and the now, which LGBTQ soap supercouple remains your favorite and had made a lasting impact? Let’s take a look at four duos who captivated many viewers.

Nuke  – Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer – As the World Turns

Van Hansis (Luke) and Jake Silbermann (Noah) were a key part of the evolution of, and representation of LGBTQ character on the soaps.  ‘Nuke’, as they were known as, became the first gay male soap couple to share an on-screen kiss back in 2007.  ATWT also became known as the first soap to depict a fully realized romantic male couple as an integral part of the show.  There was plenty of backlash along the way for the long-awaited kiss to happen, but when it did, the show moved forward to tell their love story.

Otalia – Olivia Spencer and Natalia Rivera Aitoro – Guiding Light

When Crystal Chappell (Olivia) and Jessica Leccia (Natalia) began to play the love story of Otalia, they had to show their affection by a kiss on the head, or holding hands.  It took quite some time for GL to move forward to have two women, two moms, no less, share a lip lock. The complicated love story featured Natalia being conflicted to face her true romantic feelings for Olivia, because of her value system and religions upbringing, and that made this all the more riveting and frustrating at the same time.  In the end, the rabid fan base for this duo was so great that Chappell wound up creating her own series, Venice, to honor and serve them, remaining one of the LGBTQ communities greatest allies.

Kish – Kyle Lewis and Oliver Fish – One Life to Live

In 2009, One Life to Live’s Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell) was an out lab tech in Llanview, who back in college had a relationship with Officer Oliver Fish (Scott Evans).  It imploded when Oliver denied he was gay.  For years, Oliver remained in the closet, before finally coming out to himself and Kyle.

Kish had been a big success with the media and One Life’s gay audience. LGBTQ-advocacy groups honored the couple and the story.  However, Kish was cut short when the network felt that the data showed that the storyline was not resonating with the show’s core audience.

WilSon – Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis – Days of our Lives

Days of our Lives delivered daytime’s first-ever gay male wedding in 2014, between Will (then played by Guy Wilson) and Sonny (then played by Freddie Smith).

In an interview with EW, Days of our Lives executive producer, Ken Corday shared on the union, “Will and Sonny have been together for a while and it was the natural progression of their love story. We didn’t feel like there was anything we could or couldn’t do, we treated them like any other couple on the canvas and continued to grow their romance as such.”

In addition, the coming out story of Will Horton was critically praised and noteworthy for the performances of Chandler Massey, who won three Daytime Emmys for his work in the Outstanding Younger Actor category 2012, 2013 and 2014.  Freddie Smith also won in the same category in 2015.  Will has been played over the years by Chandler Massey and Guy Wilson, while Sonny has been portrayed by Freddie Smith and Zach Tinker.

There have been several other key LGBTQ couples throughout the course of daytime history including All My Children’s Bianca (Eden Riegel) and Reese (Tamara Braun). These two characters were involved in the first same-sex lesbian wedding on daytime. Problem was … Reese kissed Zach (Thorsten Kaye) before the wedding, making this infuriating for viewers at home.

Other notable LGBTQ couples through the years have included: Bianca and Maggie on All My Children, Mariah and Tessa of The Young and the Restless played bv Camryn Grimes and Cait Fairbanks, Maya and Rick on The Bold and the Beautiful, Lucas and Brad on General Hospital and others.
