OLTL Co-Head Writer Thom Racina Video Message: "We Get To Do Things That Soap Operas Have Never Done Before!"

Courtesy/facebook

Courtesy/facebook

This afternoon a slightly self-admittedly tipsy, Thom Racina posted a brand new short video message to the fans of One Life to Live on his facebook page!

Sitting in the lobby of the Edison Hotel in New York City, the new co-head writer of Prospect Park’s One Life to Live reboot related a very compelling message that reveals what had been rumored, that the new One Life (and AMC) will be groundbreaking for soaps!

Racina said in his video message: “What’s so exciting about the new One Life to Live is it’s grand experiment. There are no barriers here.  We get to do things that Soap Operas have never done before.  We get to tell stories in new ways that we might have always wanted to do before, and never really had the freedom to do it.  We get to say words like I am going to say right now, “Oh shit!” (Laughs). It’s going to be, we hope, a great journey for everyone, and boy, we thank you all for sticking with us and bringing us some new people. Tell your friends. We need all the viewers we can get. And we hope we are not going to disappoint you, and you know what? We are really counting on the fact that we are not going to do that!”

After the jump, watch the complete “quickie” video message and then weigh-on on what you think just might be going on in Llanview in this new online format?  And, are you excited to see the freedom the writers will have in scripts and their storytelling?

I AGREE! I am so HAPPY Ron Carlivati has nothing to do with PP OLTL. I am sick and tired of Ron Carlivati and Frank Valenti plagiarizing and ripping off OLTL, its history, and characters. And now stealing Port Charles because they don’t know how to write for GH. IMO He ruined the last few years of OLTL. I hope the new writers can fix his mess and bring it back to how great it once was.

jim

If they didnt know how to write 4 GH, why did the ratings go up and save the show from cancellation. How did they rip off OLTL. They kept the show alive by bring OLTL characters to GH, and a lot of fans were happy to see them because there was still a chance OLTL might not have returned at all. And its not plagerizing when ABC is in charge of both GH and OLTL.

They were the owners of both shows b4 PP announced the OLTL reboot and had every right to use them i meant to say. I see nothing wrong how they were used, especially when PP announced last November that the reboot was off. Other characters went to other shows and stayed. Rae Cummings and Skye Chandler came to Port Charles and no one said that GH was ripping off the other soaps where they originated. I was happy to see John, Todd, Starr, Tea, Blair, added to GH when OLTL and many fans were happy too. That shouldnt change now… Read more »

Many of us don’t see it as “ripping off” the other shows. As a long time viewer I took it as a nod to those shows AND to us viewers.

I have no problems with PP, Frank or Ron.

It might sound ridiculous but I get annoyed with how PG soaps are. Just once I’d like to see Sami and Nicole in a fight and have Nicole tell Sami to F*** Off & I fully believe that if Connie (GH) was a real person she would swear like a sailor. And in the gay storyline on Days I want to hear Nick call Will or Sonny a fag to take his hatred to another level. I think the ability to push the envelope was what made soaps so intense in the first place when they talked about things in… Read more »

I know.. I hope now they can do storylines they weren’t able to do on soaps, like a gay storyline for a legacy characters, i hate how ABC was all afraid about Kish and also back in the 90s they told Malone they didn’t want Joey to be a gay character, so he created Billy instead.. I hope finally we get that story on OLTL I can think of two teens who can do the coming out stories and other great stories like drug and alcohol abuse, sex addiction, the possibilities are endless

Not every one wants to hear words they could not say on TV or see things they could not see on TV. I do not and will not watch if that is all they want to do. Watched OLTL since it’s very start…..watching longer than Erika Slezak but if I won’t sleeze I have Cinemax.

i don’t get it. so it doesn’t bother you that these characters sleep their way through entire families, never know who their father of their baby is because they always have several men on the go, but it bothers you that someone might say “shit”?

Hmmm well in the final couple years of OLTL we heard middle to upper class people call each other “bitch” and “whore”. I don’t mind swearing or “gutter talk” if it’s in character. I don’t think Vicki would say “shit” or “fuck” (or even call someone “bitch” and “whore”). However, someone like Stacey would call Kish “fags” (for an easy example). I don’t need my soaps to be true to life, but it helps when the characters are actually allowed to be ‘in character’. In fact, there’s certainly a level of drama to be had with a social disparate landscape… Read more »

I wanted to respond to Andrew but couldnt. Maybe Viki wouldnt say certain words but im sure the writers would bring out her alter Nicki Smith to spew some profanity. When the show was on ABC everyone was just fine with it, and i never read anywhere where someone commented that the problem with the show is lack of brief nudity in sex scenes and lack of usage of certain words. Spoken like a lady with class. If these shows become all about F-this and F-that they are going to lose a lot of loyal fans. There is a time and place for everything and, if they want to add curse words, then they should follow scripts of PG-13 movies and use that dreaded “F” word once and episode or less. I think you can be just as constructive using other words like basic cable does without degrading yourself to using that word all the time like some movies do. It really adds nothing to say the “F” word over and… Read more »

Well I have, Brian Tripp. 🙂 I remember DEADWOOD on HBO. An amazing show, but they used the word “cocksucker” at least 20 times per episode. Some shows use curse words to add dramatic effect and then there are some movies where that is all you get plus stupid penis jokes (the movie THE WATCH comes to mind). I stand by what I say, it shows immaturity if that is all you are going to do is say the F word. Furthermore, to the person that mentioned that children less than 10 years old are using the F word, then… Read more »

I agree Leslie!!! If they are going to be pushing the envelope that way then I will not watch. I like the genre the way that it is and OLTL is about traditional families at it’s core and we don’t need that. There is enough garbage on-line and on TV and we really don’t need more! I would hope that Erica would ask the writers to not write her that way. We have enough scripted reality shows already! I am not impressed with TR and his notion of pushing the envelope.

Ann, I agree with boes. I think by Mr. Racina saying “oh shit” proves to me that they are just doing a basic cable version of the show. With basic cable you get that word occasionally and you also get to see a little more of the human body like a bare butt, but not full nudity (at least the shows I watch 🙂 ).

I would hope that the writers/producers keep their new freedoms to a minimum so as not to offend.

I don’t think that the new shows are going to be filled with naked people cursing at each other. I doubt it will be that extreme. We’ll probably just get a profanity here and there and sexier love scenes. I think the stuff Thom is talking about is more story line based. Networks have a long history of interfering with story lines that they deemed too controversial for daytime. These shows will not longer have to deal with that. OLTL was far from Father Knows Best when it originally aired and we already knew it. We didnt mind much that they were changing the characters of Mathew and Destiny. Its just that some of us dont allow usuage of certain words in our home. I may take a peak at OLTL but if i feel there is too much graphic language i wont watch. Please keep the bar high with the writing. The swearing and gratuitousness of cable tv is not what this audience expects. You will be turning off many in the audience – and I would not want my teens to be watching the shows I grew up watching if the programs degenerated like that. Whether or not it reflects society, it is not necessary in order to tell a good story. Keep the soaps clean, save the explicit smut for cable.

I don’t think an occasional shit, hell, or damn will upset anyone, but I also don’t think there’s any need to get carried away with it just because. I could agree for myself personally, but just because I might be desensitized, I don’t think older folks appreciate it all and in fact are extremely offended by its usage. I’m on the fence about it – regarding the use of foul language – I mean, it wasn’t necessary before, and the points still came across. I can’t imagine Victoria Lord cursing but of course I can understand some of the lower class characters using stronger language in certain scenes. As for the love scenes, well, I can’t speak for others but I feel that less is better ~ in older movies, a good director and producer would allow the viewer to understand what is perhaps sexually implied, there didn’t seem to be the need to be totally explicit, we… Read more »

Not X-Rated, R-Rated. Plus many former soap stars have appeared in Indie flicks and have done racy and revealing love scenes. They did it on NYPD Blue as well.

Back in the 90’s, Y and R did a prime time special where Don Diamont (Brad) did a shower scene where he showed a little ass.

Recently Lulu and Dante’s love scene on GH, looked borderline.

On Nip/Tuck, Thad Luckinbill (JT on YR) showed his backside.

I doubt that the writers plan expletive filled dialogue to fill the half hour. But, I know there have been times I have watched shows – daytime or primetime – and rolled my eyes at a character saying things like Darn or Gosh or Heck when you know in real life some characters would not speak in that manner. And here we go. The dissension begins. As I’ve said previously, if fans are going to be tuning in to see the same shows and where they left off, they are going to be majorly disappointed. These are re-boots people. I hope fans at least give these new shows a chance before they start ripping them apart. And again, they need to get more eyeballs to view these show – and yes, they need to be younger eyeballs in order to make this happen.

Sounds like fun. I think OLTL has always been current, but perhaps just a little white washed… maybe now they can have more hot sex scenes!

I can’t believe there are so many comments about the use of profanity. I am not a fan of the use of a more grittier language, but I guess I would rather understand/discuss what kinds of story lines are going to be experimented with that they haven’t been able to do before. Soaps have been known for the absurd and crazy uncharted storylines in addition to more social current day stories. We have had gay, bullying, addiction, rape, stalking, vampires and a multitude of other issues. Why aren’t you discussing what you haven’t seen before and would like to see… Read more »

I’ll handle a certain degree of profanity if (1) it’s not constantly thrown in, gratuitously (and my sense is that that’s not what they’re going for here) and (2) it isn’t the ONLY way they’re being “groundbreaking”–it should be part of a truly groundbreaking approach to the way stories are told that includes some things that the networks have always been afraid of, such as true ethnic, racial, and sexual diversity, for example (just to pick one thing). Network soaps have been dying out for a lot of reasons, and one has been a very tired approach to storytelling. So… Read more »

thom mentioned that: “we get to do things that soap operas have never done before.” Yet there’s a lack of racial diversity on oltl. There are 2 Indian american chars and they are both recurring from what I have read. Storylines w/ racially diverse chars can rejuvenate oltl. But there’s never any significant racial diversity from hollywood projects w/ present day settings like oltl and period pieces like downton abbey w/c should cast Indian chars! There should be a Rajahs who are of equal class and stature w/ the nobility. There should be afro caribean chars who should be musicians… Read more »

1920’s England’s countrysides were very white. recently the show “Midsomer Murders” was accused of being “too white”, but if you were in England’s countrysides, you’d see that they are mostly white.

I don’t have a problem with the inclusion of such words if it’s appropriate to the situation and something a character would be likely to say. If Asa was alive in this version, such words would be a natural part of his casual conversation. Viki, with her Lady of the Manor style, would seem out of place tossing out F-bombs. (Though Niki Smith wouldn’t think twice about it.) TNT’s “Dallas” revival has used words that would never have made it on the original CBS version (which I’ve read actually had to limit Jim Davis on his habit of adding “damn”… Read more »

I agree Leslie – and Heidi – and so many others! I do not allow profanity in my house – not from the adults, not from the kids, and certainly not from my soap! I am concerned with a writer who is so excited he can now say “shit” on a show. Seriously? Are we all in Middle School now? How about great PLOT without the adolescent PROFANITY? This was always a great show and I am so excited to have it return! Please don’t trash it up just because you can…

I agree the last thing I want is someone to use the F word and Vicki to walk around with no clothes on, I hope they don’t trash my soap, I want things the way they were before ABC killed my OLTL.

The writer is not excited he can write an ”ohhh shit” he is excited that there be more leeway to write the stories, and that is what he said.. with a laugh over being able to say ”ohh shit” and not saying it would even be said only that it could be said.. ”“What’s so exciting about the new One Life to Live is it’s grand experiment. There are no barriers here. We get to do things that Soap Operas have never done before. We get to tell stories in new ways that we might have always wanted to do… Read more »

If I see anything THAT I don’t feel belongs on this try on the net I will not watch.
So I think it’s best to keep things as of Soap Opera and not over the top cursing, sex or other wise.
Lets not push me to not watch, bad idea, because I’m sure I’m not the only one.

OLTL Alum Tuc Watkins Opens Up On His Sobriety and the Importance of Camaraderie

He made his mark to soap opera fans as David Vickers on One Life to Live (1994-1996, 2001-2013) and as Bob on Desperate Housewives (2007-2012), since then Tuc Watkins has been featured and starred in numerous television, motion pictures and stage roles.

Most recently, Watkins starred opposite Neil Patrick Harris in the Netflix streaming series Uncoupled, the film and stage adaptation of Boys in the Band, and recently on stage in the AIDS-based drama, The Inheritance.

Tuc, who came out on The Marie Osmond Show back in 2013, is the father of twins via surrogacy, and is currently in a relationship with film, TV and stage actor, Andrew Rannells.  Earlier in his career, many warned Watkins that it could be detrimental to him, if he played gay roles.  However, in the years that have followed, Tuc has proved them wrong taking on some of the most prominent LGBTQ roles out there and earning critical praise for his performances.

A few months ago, in March, Tuc took to his Instagram account to share a before and after photo of him 4 years before he got sober, and 4 years after he got sober with a heartfelt and inspiring message.

Watkins expressed: “If your drinking is making you uncomfortable, tell a sober person. Any sober person. That’s what I did. I don’t remember what I said to him that day. And I don’t remember what he said to me. But I remember the way he made me feel. He made me feel like I was going to be okay. It was the last day I drank. October 28, 2018. I got sober because alcohol was ruining my life. I stay sober because my life got better. #sobriety #recovery”

In a new article on Watkins from Queerty, EastSiders creator and star, Kit Williamson delivered a statement to the LGBTQ outlet about his experience working with Tuc and his consistent support for other gay artists.

Kit shared: “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Tuc three times now. On the third season of EastSiders, my new series Unconventional, and the indie film Retake. Tuc is a star in the literal sense of the word, shining light on and lifting up the people around him, and he is as talented and funny as he is dashing and kind.  I was a fan of his before I became a friend, and I have seen firsthand how committed he is to supporting other queer artists and making art that matters.”

As pride month approaches in just a weeks time, Watkins shared on Queerty’s coverage on his Instagram: “Thank you @Queerty for elevating the LGBTQ+ community. 🏳️‍🌈 For highlighting the differences in our backgrounds, identities, and experiences, all through the lens of camaraderie.”

Kelly Clarkson Opens Up on Moving Her Talk Show to New York City: “It’s Either I’m Not Going to be Able to Continue the Show or I Gotta Go East Coast”

Kelly Clarkson told producers of her daytime talk show back in January that she has to head to the east coast starting in the fall, or there wouldn’t be any show to come back to.

In an interview promoting her upcoming new album Chemistry, Clarkson spoke to Nancy O’Dell for the TalkShopLive series.

During the conversation she shared a few more details on what led to this move.  Kelly shared how she spoke to the execs at her show and at NBC, relating, ‘Guys, I need you to know what’s happening. It’s either I’m not going to be able to continue the show or I gotta go East Coast.”

Elaborating further, the Grammy Award-winning singer shared: “Covid, pointed out (that) being isolated and so far from your family, that’s not good for anyone.  My family is East Coast, they’re North Carolina based. So, it was one of those things where I just had to … and also there was a lot of personal things going on, too.”  Those personal things include her recent divorce from Brandon Blackstock back in the summer of 2022, raising her kids and more.

Kelly went on to say that the move to the Big Apple was all her idea, citing, “It as 100 percent my idea and it was really cool that NBC backed me because I was like, ‘Y’all, I love doing this show. I really do. I didn’t even know I would but I gotta make a change for me and my family. Any chance we could do this? I know we can’t do this from my ranch so any chance we could do it in New York … it’s at least closer to my family … that was really the main reason.”

During the chat with O’Dell, Clarkson admitted she is not really into pursuing motion picture and TV roles in Los Angeles anyway, but she does enjoy the stage and when in New York she is closer to the theatre. The Daytime Emmy Award winner also noted that she is working on various other projects.  Might we see Kelly on Broadway in 2024 or 2025? Stay tuned.

Clarkson’s show recently came under fire earlier this month when former and current employees claimed that it fosters a toxic work environment, something Kelly pledges she will make sure in the future that people that work for her show won’t ever feel that way again.

The talk show host addressed the allegations a few weeks ago, and noted changes are coming behind the scenes.  Kelly expressed, “Part of that build will include leadership training for all of the senior staff, including myself. There is always room to grow and ensure we are all being/becoming the best versions of ourselves in any business, especially when it comes to leadership. To ensure that any notion of toxicity is eradicated.”

So, what do you think about Kelly’s move to New York to be closer to her family, Broadway and more? Will the show have a different feel to it next season? Comment below.
