One Life to Live Alum Scott Evans Talks Playing a ‘Ken’ in ‘Barbie’ Movie, and Being Accidentally Outed By Brother Chris Evans

When director Greta Gerwig’s highly-anticipated motion picture, Barbie, hits theatres on July 21st, not only does Ryan Gosling play the role of Barbie’s boyfriend and bestie, Ken, but so do a few other notable actors play ‘Kens”.

One of those actors is former One Life to Live star, Scott Evans, who played Officer Oliver Fish on the ABC soap opera, and was one-half of the same-sex love story with Brett Claywell (Kyle Lewis). The on-screen duo became known to their fans as “Kish”.

In a new cover story with Attitude, Evans discusses his career, his appearance in Barbie, being out in Hollywood and clears up how his brother, film star, Chris Evans accidentally outed him while he was on One Life to Live, during an interview.

Scott explained: “I remember reading that article. It was 2009 or something, and I was, like, 26 years old and I’d been out for a while. My brother called me when he saw the headline and he was just like, ‘Hey, I’m so sorry. Like, this is what — was I not supposed to?’ I had been on a soap opera at that point, and I was a very out person. I made that decision. Everyone always asked: ‘When did you decide you wanted to be an out actor?’ And I’m like: ‘That never even crossed my mind.’ I know a lot of people in the business that are still closeted, and I know a lot of people that don’t like to talk about it, because it does affect your jobs. And people say it’s better now. It’s not. It’s progressed, but it’s not better. But I cared more about my own mental health and my own personal wellbeing, and so I was out. The only reason it seemed like he outed me is because he is in the public eye. Everybody that knew me, knew. I have nothing to hide. If you met me in person, you know.”

As if being out has hindered his Hollywood career, Scott noted, “I’ve always been out, so I don’t think I will ever really know. They’re finally letting gay people play the gay roles, but now it’s like that’s all we’re playing. It’s called acting for a reason. And then all the gay roles that are winning Oscars go to straight men anyway. I think the industry itself has a long way to go. They think what we’re fighting for is that we should play our roles, and it’s not that, it’s that we should be able to tell our stories.”

The former soap star shares what happened when he got the call that he would be in the movie of this summer, Barbie: “It still doesn’t quite feel real. I remember when I submitted the audition band. Then, a couple weeks later, I got a call: ‘Greta (Gerwig) wants to have a meeting with you.’ I had the meeting and then a couple hours later, they were like, “You got the offer.” I cried very hard, like, I was hyperventilating, proudly crying. Then they were like, ‘We want you to leave in three days.’ Every day was a dream, getting to work with people like Greta and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.”

The story of Officer Fish and Kyle was told with the same dignity that was recently beautifully portrayed in the wedding of T.K. and Carlos on 911 Lonestar.

Both Scott and Brett Claywell were great as Fish and Kyle. Their love story was so sweet. I’m glad they got together to raise little Sierra Rose. I had no interest in seeing the Barbie movie. But, now that I know Scott is in it, count me in. I hope he has significant screen time.

100% agreed. Scott Evans will bring my eyes to the Barbie movie.

Kelly Monaco Celebrates 20 Years on GH and Sam’s Evolution: “All the Pieces Don’t Fit Perfectly Yet, But It’s Certainly Not Broken Anymore!”

Sunday, October 1st will mark the 20th anniversary of Kelly Monaco’s debut on General Hospital as Sam McCall.  And as the story goes, when Kelly finished her run on Port Charles as Livvie Locke (2000-2003), and the show had been canceled, the three major networks were all interested in her to join their soaps.

In the end, GH won out and fans of the ABC daytime drama series have been the lucky ones to have Monaco join the A-list cast of the iconic soap. Throughout Sam’s journey in Port Charles, viewers have seen quite the character growth. Sam started on the show as a con and hustler, and bloomed into a bonafide heroine and a private investigator.

Kelly shared with Soap Opera Digest in their latest issue, how she viewed the Sam of old, to the Sam of today: “Sam came on to the canvas only having herself and her brother, always taking care of someone, and never being taken care of.  I think the biggest evolution for her is starting from being a really lonely, scared woman and becoming a woman who is still really independent, but is protected by family and friends and love and relationships and loyalty, and she never had that before.”

In a very poetic way, Monaco added on her character’s development: “She came in bent and broken, and I feel like there’s a lot of her that’s still broken, but she’s constantly sort of putting the Rubik’s Cube together. All the pieces don’t fit perfectly, yet, but it’s certainly not broken anymore.”

Throughout Sam’s two decades in Port Charles she has been in love, suffered terrible lost, found family members, had children, and has been involved in some of the most dangerous and criminal cases involving many a villain as she tried to help bring them to justice.

Currently, Sam is involved in a romance with Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna).  Viewers wonder if Lulu ever wakes up out of her coma, would that spell trouble for their relationship, and in turn, give Kelly some great meaty story to work with?

Now, in the comment section below, share your congrats to Kelly for her 20-year-run on GH. Then let us know, what has been your favorite Sam story over the years?
