OSCARS 2024: The Most Memorable Moments
The 96th annual Academy Awards aired on Sunday night on ABC and during the three and a half hour telecast hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, there were several emotional acceptances speeches, shocking moments, awkward moments, and standing ovations, all within in a broadcast that started one-hour earlier than usual, so everyone could stay up and catch it all the way to the end no matter what time zone you lived in within the USA.
In the end, it was as predicted, Oppenheimer was named Best Picture and won a total of 7 Academy Awards including for Director, Christopher Nolan, Best Actor Cillian Murphy and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr.
However, when it was time for the Best Picture to be announced, the telecast producers had Academy Award winner, Al Pacino walk out to present it. However, Pacino failed to mention all ten nominees before opening the envelope and kinda sorta revealing that the winner was Oppenheimer.

The Best Actress category created one of the most memorable moments of the night when Emma Stone won for her performance in Poor Things when many thought Lily Gladstone would ride the award wave to the podium for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon. A Gladstone win would have been the first for an indigenous actress. Coming in to the Oscars, Gladstone had won the Best Actress SAG Award. Stone was shocked her name was called by last year’s winner Michelle Yeoh, and as she took to the stage, the back of her dress broke, which was something she acknowledged to the audience, and in her acceptance speech.

As a nod to the 50 year anniversary of the streaker that took the stage at the Oscars Ceremony while David Niven was presenting, WWE superstar and motion picture actor, John Cena (who was also a Barbie merman) popped out covering his body when Kimmel tried to coax him on to the stage to present. The super-buff Cena eventually walked out seemingly wearing nothing, but covering his private parts with the envelope for the category he was presenting, ironically Best Costume Design! While the Costume Design nominee clip package rolled, Cena became cloaked/covered with what looked like a curtain. (see below, how it went down to the audience inside the Dolby Theatre).
Here’s how John Cena went from fully naked (!!!) to partially clothed while costume design nominees reel played. Jimmy Kimmel really did help. #Oscars pic.twitter.com/dZPA7qmbgf

One of the most highly-anticipated moments of the night was Ryan Gosling performing the nominated Best Song, “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie, and not only did it not disappoint, it once again showcased just how talented Gosling truly is. During the performance, Ryan brought the humor, the theatrics of ‘Ken” and is own self-awareness, through a massive dance number which featured the other Kens from Barbie dancing behind him.

Photo: ABC
One of those Kens was former One Life to Live star, Scott Evans (ex- Oliver Fish), who was on the Oscar stage! Eventually, Gosling made his way into the Dolby Theatre audience to stars such as Margot Robbie, Emma Stone and Barbie director, Greta Gerwig who sang along with him. However, none other than Slash also took to the stage and rocked out with Gosling on the guitar towards the finale of the number.
In a both political and humanitarian moment, Mstyslav Chernov, the director of the Best Documentary Feature, 20 Days in Mariupol from Ukraine, upon accepting the award noted that he wished there had never been a reason to make the film in the first place. This was the first Oscar for a film from Ukraine. 20 Days in Mariupol tells Chernov’s harrowing first-person journey of the time he spent in the besieged Ukrainian city immediately after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion back in February 2022.

Photo: ABC
Chernov’s speech included: “I wish to be able to exchange this (The Oscar) for Russia never attacking Ukraine, never occupying our cities. I wish to give all the recognition to Russia not killing tens of thousands of my fellow Ukrainians. I wish for them to release all the hostages, all the soldiers who are protecting the land, all the civilians who are now in their jails.” He added that cinema had the power to shape and inform, expressing, “We can make sure history record is set straight and that the truth will prevail … cinema forms memories, and memories form history.”

Early in the night, Da’Vine Joy Randolph accepted the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for the Holdovers, where she delivered an inspiring speech while her co-star Paul Giamatti was seen in the cutaway with a tear streaming down his face.

A noticeable disappointment was the In Memoriam segment where between the orchestra, the dancers, and the vocals of Andrea and Matteo Bocelli, those that passed away were barely noticeable because so much focus was taken away from their tribute and images.
